Abstract

A theoretical investigation of electron-D2 resonant collisions - via the low lying and the Rydberg states of D2- - is presented for vibrational excitation, dissociative electron attachment and dissociative excitation processes by using the local-complex-potential approach. Full sets of vibrationally resolved cross sections, involving the ground electronic state - X 1{\Sigma}+g - and the first two electronic excited states - b 3{\Sigma}+u and B 1{\Sigma}+ u - of the D2 molecule, are given for fusion plasma applications in their technologically relevant partially dissociated, detached divertor regimes. In particular, transitions between electronic excited states are also considered. Comparisons are made with cross sections present in the literature, where available

Abstract

This perspective paper deals with an overview of particle-in-cell / Monte Carlo collision models applied to different plasma-propulsion configurations and scenarios, from electrostatic (E x B and pulsed arc) devices to electromagnetic (RF inductive, helicon, electron cyclotron resonance) thrusters, with an emphasis on plasma plumes and their interaction with the satellite. The most important elements related to the modeling of plasma-wall interaction are also presented. Finally, the paper reports new progress in the particle-in-cell computational methodology, in particular regarding accelerating computational techniques for multi-dimensional simulations and plasma chemistry Monte Carlo modules for molecular and alternative propellant

Abstract

ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities. A Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated to developing and characterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accelerator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full performances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign. Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER NBI featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of in-vessel components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants are already under final testing and commissioning. Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. The integrated test to confirm 1MV output by combining invertor systems, DC generators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed. Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion.

In order to enable such development, a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, called SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated developing and characterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accelerator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full performances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign, in particular events/issues occurred during operation, which led to the identification of improvement opportunities/necessities (e.g. RF discharges, local burns, water leaks, other damages, configuration/design upgrades to maximize chances/margin to quest target parameters). Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of the beam source, accelerator and the beam line components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants, already installed, are under final testing and commissioning. Abstract

The Particle-in-Cell (PIC) method was used to study two different ion thruster concepts - Stationary Plasma Thrusters (SPT) and High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thrusters (HEMP-T), in particular the plasma properties in the discharge chamber due to the different magnetic field configurations. Special attention was paid to the simulation of plasma particle fluxes on the thrusters channel surfaces. In both cases, PIC proved itself as a powerful tool, delivering important insight into the basic physics of the different thruster concepts. The simulations demonstrated that the new HEMP thruster concept allows for a high thermal efficiency due to both minimal energy dissipation and high acceleration efficiency. In the HEMP thruster the plasma contact to the wall is limited only to very small areas of the magnetic field cusps, which results in much smaller ion energy flux to the thruster channel surface as compared to SPT. The erosion yields for dielectric discharge channel walls of SPT and HEMP thrusters were calculated with the binary collision code SDTrimSP. For SPT, an erosion rate on the level of 1 mm of sputtered material per hour was observed. Abstract

To reach fusion conditions and control the plasma configuration in ITER, the next step in tokamak fusion research, two neutral beam injectors (NBIs) will supply 16.5 MW each, by neutralizing accelerated negative hydrogen or deuterium ions. The requirements of ITER NBIs (40A/1 MeV D- ions for ≤1 h, 46A/870 keV H- ions for ≤1000 s) have never been simultaneously attained. So in the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF, Consorzio RFX, Italy) the operation of the full-scale ITER NBI prototype (MITICA) will be tested and optimised up to full performances, focussing on accelerator (including voltage holding), beam optics, neutralisation, residual ion removal. The NBTF includes also the full-scale prototype of the ITER NBI source with 100 keV particle energy (SPIDER), for early investigation of: negative ion production and extraction, source uniformity, negative ion current density and beam optics. This paper will describe the main results of the first two years of SPIDER operation, devoted to characterizing plasma and beam parameters, including investigation of RF-plasma coupling efficiency and magnetic filter field effectiveness in reducing co-extracted electrons. SPIDER is progressing towards the first caesium injection, which aims at increasing the negative ion density. A major shutdown, planned for 2021, to solve the issues identified during the operation and to carry out programmed modifications, will be outlined. The installation of each MITICA power supply and auxiliary system is completed; in-vessel mechanical components are under procurement by Fusion for Energy (F4E). Integration, commissioning and test of the power supplies, procured by F4E and QST, as the Japanese Domestic Agency (JADA), will be presented. Abstract

Observation of a transient, in Cs-free regime and long term NIO1 operation, led to the development of stabilization techniques, including conditioning (with oxygen or other gases, as argon, nitrogen, and xenon), interleaved with days of use of H2 as a process gas. Stabilization of transients gave more H- current and less plasma luminosity. After installation of a cesium oven, some additional increase (up to a factor of 2 reaching an average about 50 A/m2) of current was observed, but effect saturates at a moderate oven reservoir temperature. Obtained beam optics will be compared with theoretical expectation and old results in the Cs-free regime in similar conditions (as source voltage, often set to 11 kV). In both regimes, central beamlet apparent density is larger, possibly because a bias plate BP mask reduces side ones. Further improvements including long term conditioning of oven, modification of BP mask and of Cs pipe nozzle (with supporting simulations) are discussed.

Abstract

The characterization of the plasma generated by a Hall Effect thruster operating in Nitrogen and Hydrogen is presented. Measurements of the spatial profiles of the electron temperature and density of the plume have been obtained by scanning the region outside the exit plane of the thruster through a Langmuir probe. The measurements are aimed to determine the best position of a caesiated target in order to maximize the surface production of negative Hydrogen ions. The thruster has been designed as a tunable plasma source for a novel concept of a negative ion source, which could in principle benefit from some positive features of the Hall Effect thrtister; like the possibility of tuning the ion energy and the good uniformity of particle density at the channel exit, thanks to the axisymmetric magnetic field.

Abstract

In multi-beamlet negative ion accelerators for neutral beam injectors, the transverse magnetic field necessary for suppressing the co-extracted electrons induces a deflection of the negative ion beamlets that must be corrected. For the design, particle-tracing simulation codes are used to compute ion trajectories and optical properties of the beamlets in the acceleration stage. In these codes, uniform boundary conditions are normally assumed for the ion current density distribution at the surface (called meniscus), where negative ions are extracted from the plasma and form beamlets, which are accelerated across the apertures of the accelerator grids. Recently, experimental campaigns dedicated to the accurate measurement of the beamlet deflection in the acceleration phase revealed higher deflection than foreseen by simulations. In this work, we demonstrate that an agreement with the experimental data can be obtained by incorporating in the numerical simulations a non-radially symmetric distribution of the ion current density extracted across the meniscus surface. In the first part, the asymmetry of the ion current density at the meniscus is studied in an empirical way, by analysing and fitting the experimental results obtained with different operating parameters. In the second part, we show that the ion current asymmetry estimated by this procedure is well consistent with the flow pattern of H− ions calculated in the meniscus zone using a detailed particle in cell (PIC) model of the ion source in the presence of transverse magnetic field.

Abstract

There are a number of pressing problems mankind is facing today that could, at least in part, be resolved by space systems. These include capabilities for fast and far-reaching telecommunication, surveying of resources and climate, and sustaining global information networks, to name but a few. Not surprisingly, increasing efforts are now devoted to building a strong near-Earth satellite infrastructure, with plans to extend the sphere of active life to orbital space and, later, to the Moon and Mars if not further. The realization of these aspirations demands novel and more efficient means of propulsion. At present, it is not only the heavy launch systems that are fully reliant on thermodynamic principles for propulsion. Satellites and spacecraft still widely use gas-based thrusters or chemical engines as their primary means of propulsion. Nonetheless, similar to other transportation systems where the use of electrical platforms has expanded rapidly, space propulsion technologies are also experiencing a shift toward electric thrusters that do not feature the many limitations intrinsic to the thermodynamic systems. Most importantly, electric and plasma thrusters have a theoretical capacity to deliver virtually any impulse, the latter being ultimately limited by the speed of light. Rapid progress in the field driven by consolidated efforts from industry and academia has brought all-electric space systems closer to reality, yet there are still obstacles that need addressing before we can take full advantage of this promising family of propulsion technologies. In this paper, we briefly outline the most recent successes in the development of plasma-based space propulsion systems and present our view of future trends, opportunities, and challenges in this rapidly growing field.

Abstract

In view of the long term operation of neutral beam injectors (NBI) used for stellaratorand tokamak heating and current drive, the negative ion source must be carefully optimized,especially because not only plasma but also surface wall conditions are involved in H- or D-production. The NIO1 (negative ion optimization phase 1) installation was developed and isoperated since 2014 (in close collaboration between Consorzio RFX and INFN), as a convenientbenchmark to study innovative solutions and to address physical questions. The comparativelysmaller size of NIO1 (a relatively compact and modular 9 beamlet H- source) is of evidentadvantage for detailed modeling. The apparent plasma impedance is well in agreement withnegligible rf reflection at plasma on, and reflections with plasma off (about 25 %) are well withinlimits tolerable by rf amplifier; transition between E and H modes of rf coupling can be controlledby increasing rf power or by decreasing gas pressure. The filter field intensity, Bx, has beenextended to span the [-12, 5] mT range, and as a trend, source performances improve with |Bx|.Status and results of a first NIO1 cesium oven are reported. Installation of the Cavity Ring DownSpectrometer (CRDS) and recent years progress of beam diagnostics and of the quality of thevolume-produced H- beam are briefly discussed, together with the status of the NIO1 full power"end calorimeter/beam imaging attenuator", to be placed at the end flange with auxiliary flangesfor infrared observation. Conceptual tests of energy recovery system, perhaps using this fullpower calorimeter are also summarized.

Abstract

Negative ion sources are a critical component of neutral beam injectors NBI (used for stellarator and tokamak heating and current drive), due to the stringent requirement current density, beam divergence and operational stability. In support to the NBI development, a relatively compact 9 beamlet H- source (named NIO1, for negative ion optimization phase 1) was developed in close collaboration between Consorzio RFX and INFN, and is operated since 2014, for studying the influence of magnetic field configuration and other conditions on extracted beam. A robust rf system (amplifier can tolerate the load mismatch at plasma onset) and strong water cooling of the ion source and accelerator allow CW operation of the beam, well over the one hour pulse length required by ITER. A dedicated Cs oven (including a hot closure valve) was verified in separated test stand, where final calibrations are in progress, for installation in NIO1. Effects of several magnetic field configurations were studied in NIO1 in pure volume production conditions, which in principle should guarantee long term stability of extracted beam; spontaneous and unexpected fluctuations of plasma regime (with time scale in the order of minutes, or tens of minutes) were sometimes observed, and partly related to several changes in operational procedures (history of pressure changes). As a general trend, the typical source perfomances improve with strength of the magnetic field filter (with collected data spanning from 1 to 12 mT), which also helps to reduce the coextracted electron current. Evolution of diagnostic and simulation development is also summarized in this contribution: the beam images taken by two orthogonal cameras and the beam optics simulation are in fair agreement. Some development of energy recovery system and related full power beam calorimeter are also noted. More detailed modelling of source plasma will benefit from data of Cavity Ring Down Spectrometer whose installation, nearly finished, is also described.

Abstract

In this paper we propose a representative simulation test-case of E × B discharges accounting for plasma wall interactions with the presence of both the electron cyclotron drift instability and the modified-two-stream-instability. Seven independently developed particle-in-cell (PIC) codes have simulated this benchmark case, with the same specified conditions. The characteristics of the different codes and computing times are given. Results show that both instabilities were captured in a similar fashion and good agreement between the different PIC codes is reported as main plasma parameters were closely related within a 5% interval. The number of macroparticles per cell was also varied and statistical convergence was reached. Abstract

Negative ion sources are a key component of neutral beam Injection systems, which are used in fusion experiments to raise the plasma parameters close to start ignition. A novel concept for a negative ion source based on existing well tested Hall thrusters (HT) is presented. The thruster scheme is modified in order to maximize the hydrogen dissociation so as to produce an atom flux at an energy optimized to maximize the yield of negative ions when impinging on a low work function surface. The novel concept can in principle offer several advantages among which a limited amount of co-extracted electrons, a more uniform generation of negative ions and a lower rate of destruction of negative ions. In this contribution the numerical simulations aimed to identify the optimum geometry, magnetic field map and operational parameters of the source are presented discussing the effect of the HT working point on the dissociation rate.

Abstract

The development of the NBI system at the unprecedented parameters (40 A of negative ion current accelerated up to 1 MV for 1 hour ) for ITER has fostered an intense worldwide R&D effort on negative ion sources. The above mentioned parameters joint to the request of stable and reliable operation has required the realization of a full scale prototype, to be tested and optimized at the Test Facility under completion at the CNR Research Area in Padova (Italy). The key component of the system is the beam source whose performance is strictly dependent on a deep understanding of the mechanisms behind the generation and acceleration of negative ions. Tackling and solving the key issues emerging from the R&D requires competences coming from plasma physics, chemistry and accelerator physics and technology and shows the potential of establishing new ( and sometime unexpected) bridges towards other disciplines This contribution will present the status and the perspectives of the beam source R&D focusing on two aspects : a) the key role of the status of the surfaces for the negative ions generation and for the high voltage holding and b) the emerging complex network of mechanisms underlying the negative ion generation and extractions which has been found suited to interconnections to astrophysics and modern approach to the controllability of complex systems . Finally an alternative innovative concept for a new generation of negative ion sources will be mentioned as an example of how well-established technology from other fields, in this case from space propulsion, can be applied to improve efficiency and reduce complexity of the source.
