Abstract

The exchange coupling and stability of spin valves with antiferromagnetic (AF) PtMn films were investigated through the correlation between the magnetic properties and their microstructures. The exchange coupling field (Hex) decreases during iterative MR measurements and this decrease associates closely with the changes in the rotational hysteresis loss (Wr), exchange anisotropy energy (Ke) and blocking temperature (Tb) distribution. Ordering of PtMn films that is featured by antiphase configuration is found to play a significant role in determining the exchange coupling properties and stability of these spin valves. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the utility of helical CT in assessing the therapeutic effects of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL). Twenty-four patients with esophageal varices were examined. Helical scanning was initiated 60 s after intravenous injection (Iopamidol 300 mgI/ml, total 120 ml, 3 ml/s) was started. Esophageal varices were clearly depicted as high-density areas. Multiplanar reformation and 3D images demonstrated collateral circulation three-dimensionally. After EVL, mucosal high-density areas had diminished markedly, but collateral veins around the esophagus, and gastro- and/or spleno-renal shunts, were unchanged in all patients. Of 21 patients with collateral circulation, esophageal varices recurred endoscopically in 6 patients within 12 months. In 3 patients without collateral circulation, esophageal varices did not recur within 12 months. From these findings, we conclude that helical CT is a useful method for assessing the therapeutic effects of EVL.

44. Raman spectroscopy as a non-invasive technique for the quantification of melanins in feathers and hairs

Abstract

Summary: The quantification of melanins is a complex task due to the chemical heterogeneity of the pigments and the difficulty of their isolation. The best accepted procedure currently consists in the chemical cleavage of melanins and the subsequent detection of degradation products by HPLC, which implies the destruction of samples. Here, we show that Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive technique that can be used to quantify melanins. We made parallel analyses of the characteristics of pheomelanin and eumelanin Raman spectra as measured by confocal Raman microscopy and of degradation products of pheomelanin (4-amino-3-hydroxyphenylalanine, 4-AHP) and eumelanin (pyrrole-2,3,5-tricarboxylic acid, PTCA) as measured by HPLC in feathers of red-legged partridges and hairs of wild boars and humans. We found strong correlations between the spectral Raman characteristics and 4-AHP and PTCA levels, which indicates that the Raman spectra of melanins can be used to determine their content. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Abstract

To assess the image quality of multiple threshold display (MTD) as a new technique for generating three-dimensional (3D) pulmonary computed tomographic (CT) angiographic images.We used MTD, a type of shaded surface display (SSD) offering the selection of multiple thresholds and transparencies, to reconstruct 3D-CT angiograms from enhanced helical CT data sets in 33 patients with lung disease. In MTD, eight thresholds of CT values are selected, and transparency is assigned to each. The selected voxels, ranging from -600 to 1,000 Hounsfield Units, were divided into eight classes, and transparency ranging from 0 to 100% was assigned to each. The CT scanner employed was a Toshiba Xvigor. MTD and SSD images were generated by using an Xtension with a Sun SPARC station 20, and they were compared by two radiologists.The image quality of MTD images was superior to that of SSD images (p0.01), because the MTD images demonstrated clearly both the major and small vessels.MTD is a useful technique for 3D pulmonary CT angiography.

Abstract

To evaluate the usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) imaging of pulmonary nodules from helical scan CT images, 3D reconstructions were performed in 23 patients, using a CEMAX VIPstation. These cases included 15 lung cancers, six metastatic lung cancers, an aspergilloma and a tuberculoma. The equipment used was a Toshiba CT system, the X force. Helical scan CT data were acquired using up to 20 continuous 1.5 sec rotations with an X-ray beam width of 5 mm and a couchtop movement speed of 5 mm/1.5 sec, and during a single breath-hold. Axial images were reconstructed at a section interval of 2 mm. Helical scan CT permits axial images to be reconstructed at any desired position within the scanned area, and provides images without interslice gaps caused by respiratory movement. Therefore, high-quality 3D images can be obtained from these data. Concerning the optimum threshold range of CT number of 3D reconstruction, we clarified the lower and upper limits (lower/upper), as follows: 1) Solid pulmonary nodule: (-700-(-)400/-100 HU) 2) Tumor invaded to pleura or chest wall: (-700-(-)400/-200 HU) 3) Pulmonary nodule with cavity: (-700-(-)400/50 HU) 4) Small pulmonary nodule (10 mm): (-750-(-)600/-100 HU) In all cases, it was possible not only to demonstrate abnormal findings three-dimensionally, but also to grasp anatomical relationships among the pulmonary nodule, bronchi, vessels and chest wall. In conclusion, it was considered that 3D CT imaging provided additional anatomical information and was very useful.

Abstract

Meningitis, the inflammation of the meningeal tissues surrounding the brain, is often the result of bacterial infection. However, such inflammation may also arise from irritation of the meninges by drugs or by pathological conditions unrelated to infection. In such cases, it is called aseptic meningitis. Occasionally, meningitis may result from epidermoid or dermoid cysts. In these conditions, tumor-like cysts develop from cells that should have been skin cells, but have become displaced during embryonic development. Biochemical substances leaking from these fluid-filled cysts, which may contain oils and sweaty secretions, and even hair, are thought to be the cause of the meningitis in such cases. The authors report a case in which recurrent bouts of aseptic meningitis in a 36-year-old man were found to be related to the presence of a neuroepithelial cyst. In contrast with dermoid and epidermoid cysts, neuroepithelial cysts arise from ependymal cells, which line the fluid-filled ventricles of the brain, or from choroid plexus cells, which help secrete the cerebrospinal fluid. In the present case, CT scanning without enhancement revealed no abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging, weighted for T2 resonance with the magnetic field, demonstrated the presence of a cystic mass near the cerebellum and medulla oblongata. The mass was in the cerebellomedullary cistern, a large space underneath the meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The cyst was partially removed by surgery, and the fluid contained within the cyst was released. Microscopic examination of the cyst revealed its structure to be a thick layer of glial cells lined with cuboidal cells with tiny cilia, much like the normal ependymal lining of the ventricles. The authors suspect that the recurrent nature of the patient's aseptic meningitis was a result of cycles of increased fluid pressure within the cyst and subsequent leakage or rupture.
