Abstract Background Childhood family structure is considered to play a role in person’s health and welfare. This study investigated the relationships between the longitudinal changes of adult health behaviours and childhood family structure. Methods From Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 questionnaires, we collected data on childhood family structure at the age of 14 (‘two-parent family’, ‘one parent not living at home/no information on father’, and ‘father or mother deceased’), and on health behaviours (smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity status) at the ages of 31 and 46. We used the multinomial logistic regression model to estimate the unadjusted and adjusted associations between childhood family structures and the longitudinal changes between 31 and 46 years of health behaviours (four-category variables). Results Of the study sample (n = 5431; 55.5% females), 7.1% of the offspring were represented in the ‘One parent not living at home/no information on father’ subgroup, 6.3% in the ‘Father or mother deceased’ subgroup and 86.6% in the ‘Two-parent family’. ‘One parent not living at home/no information on father’ offspring were approximately twice as likely to smoke (adjusted OR 2.19, 95% CI 1.70–2.81) and heavily consume alcohol (adjusted OR 1.99, 95% CI 1.25–3.16) at both times in adulthood, relative to not smoking or not heavily consume alcohol, and compared with ‘two-parent family’ offspring. We found no statistically significant associations between childhood family structure and physical activity status changes in adulthood. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the offspring of single-parent families in particular should be supported in early life to diminish their risk of unhealthy behaviours in adulthood.

Abstract Background Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects many children, adolescents, and adults and is associated with a number of impairments. Poor academic performance is related to ADHD in clinical samples. However, it is unclear to what extent core ADHD symptoms and scholastic impairment are related in non-referred school-aged children. Methods Data come from three population-based cohorts from Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, which are part of the Nordic Network on ADHD. The combined sample size was 13,087 children who were studied at ages 7–8 or 10–12 years. Teachers rated children on inattention and hyperactivity symptoms and reported children's scholastic performance on basic skills. Results There was a significant association in all cohorts between core ADHD symptoms and scholastic impairment in reading, writing, and mathematics. Particularly, inattention was related to a two to tenfold increase in scholastic impairment. Prevalence of hyperactivity symptoms was similar across the three cohorts, but inattention was lowest among children from the Finnish cohort, after stratification on living conditions. Conclusion These results extend previous reports of scholastic impairment among children with clinically diagnosed ADHD to non-referred population samples from three European countries. Surveillance policies should be implemented in school systems to catch children in need of behavioral or scholastic support early.

The Oppenheimer-Snyder model, which describes the gravitational collapse of a ball of dust, can be used to model thermalization of strongly coupled systems using the AdS/CFT-duality. It can be used as an alternative to the previously widely used thin-shell model in the context of holographic thermalization. We solve the dynamics of the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse in asymptotically AdS space-times and compute the two-point function of a boundary spectator field in the geodesic approximation. As a comparison we perform the same computation in the thin-shell model and discover oscillatory solutions of the thin-shell model for certain equations of state.

We study the dynamics of gravitationally collapsing massive shells in AdS spacetime, and show in detail how one can determine extremal surfaces traversing them. The results are used to solve the time evolution of the holographic entanglement entropy in strongly coupled dual conformal gauge theory, which is is seen to exhibit a regime of linear growth independent of the shape of the boundary entangling region and the equation of state of the shell. Our exact results are finally compared to those of two commonly used approximation schemes, the Vaidya metric and the quasistatic limit, whose respective regions of validity are quantitatively determined., Comment: 22 pages + Appendices, 4 figures

Tutkimuksen tulokset kuvataan Knud Illeriksen oppimisen teorian ulottuvuuksia hyödyntäen. Tietosuoja- ja tietoturvaosaamisen merkitys vankiterveydenhuollossa korostuu, sillä vankiterveydenhuollossa potilas- ja henkilötietojen käsittelyä ohjaavat terveydenhuollon lainsäädännön lisäksi laki vankiterveydenhuollon yksiköstä, joka määrittää poikkeavuudet potilaan tietojenluovutukseen. We consider the time evolution of two entropy-like quantities, the holographic entanglement entropy and causal holographic information, in a model of holographic thermalization dual to the gravitational collapse of a thin planar shell. Unlike earlier calculations valid in different limits, we perform a full treatment of the dynamics of the system, varying both the shell's equation of state and initial position. In all cases considered, we find that between an early period related to the acceleration of the shell and a late epoch of saturation towards the thermal limit, the entanglement entropy exhibits universal linear growth in time in accordance with the prediction of Liu and Suh. As intermediate steps of our analysis, we explicitly construct a coordinate system continuous at the location of an infinitely thin shell and derive matching conditions for geodesics and extremal surfaces traversing this region., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures; v2: References added and typos corrected

We present an analytical solution of a massless scalar field collapsing in a three dimensional space-time with a negative cosmological constant, i.e. asymptotically AdS_3. The Einstein and scalar field equations are formulated using double null Poincare coordinates. Trapping horizons form when a critical parameter is p > 1. There are indications that the horizon radius r_AH scales like r_AH ~ (p-1)^(1/4) and the black hole mass as M ~ r_AH^2 ~ (p-1)^(1/2), i.e. with a critical mass exponent of 1/2.

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
CP violation in the standard model originates from the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix. Upon integrating all fermions out of the theory, its effects are captured by a series of effective nonrenormalizable operators for the bosonic gauge and Higgs fields. We compute the CP-violating part of the effective action to the leading nontrivial, sixth order in the covariant gradient expansion as a function of temperature. In the limit of zero temperature, our result addresses the discrepancy between two independent calculations existing in the literature [1,2]. We find that CP violation in the standard model is strongly suppressed at high temperature, but that at T<1GeV it may be relevant for certain scenarios of baryogenesis. We also identify a selected class of operators at the next, eighth order and discuss the convergence of the covariant gradient expansion., Comment: 34 pages, 5 eps figures, jheppub style; v2: minor corrections, published version

We study the production of prompt photons in strongly coupled out-of-equilibrium Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our goal is to determine the photon emission spectrum at different stages of a thermalization process, which is modeled via the gravitational collapse of a thin spherical shell in AdS$_5$ space. Particular emphasis is placed on the limit of large frequencies, which we are able to treat analytically., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, v3: Minor mistake corrected in the calculations, figures and discussion adapted accordingly

We investigate the stochastic behaviour of long wavelength modes of light spectator scalar fields during inflation. When starting from a classical field value, the probability distribution for the spectator both spreads out and moves towards an equilibrium distribution. We study the timescales for a mixed quadratic and quartic potential. The timescale of equilibration depends on the parameters of the model, and can be surprisingly large, even much more than thousands of e-folds. These results imply that the initial conditions for spectator fields are not automatically erased during inflation. Applying the results to the curvaton model, we calculate the probability distribution of the curvature perturbation and discuss 'typical' Universes., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We determine the out-of-equilibrium production rate of dileptons at rest in strongly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Thermalization is achieved via the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of matter in AdS_5 space and the subsequent formation of a black hole, which we describe in a quasistatic approximation. Prior to thermalization, the dilepton spectral function is observed to oscillate as a function of frequency, but the amplitude of the oscillations decreases when thermal equilibrium is approached. At the same time, we follow the flow of the quasinormal spectrum of the corresponding U(1) vector field towards its equilibrium limit., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. v2: Version accepted for publication in JHEP; minor modifications, added references

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology ,High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We analyze the temperature dependence of CP violation effects in the Standard Model by determining the effective action of its bosonic fields, obtained after integrating out the fermions from the theory and performing a covariant gradient expansion. We find non-vanishing CP violating terms starting at the sixth order of the expansion, albeit only in the C odd/P even sector, with coefficients that depend on quark masses, CKM matrix elements, temperature and the magnitude of the Higgs field. The CP violating effects are observed to decrease rapidly with temperature, which has important implications for the generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early Universe. Our results suggest that the cold electroweak baryogenesis scenario may be viable within the Standard Model, provided the electroweak transition temperature is at most of order 1 GeV., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Additional non-trivial cancellations lead to vanishing of P-odd sector also at finite temperature. Minor additional modifications and clarifications, conclusions otherwise unchanged. In an inflationary cosmology, the observed primoridal density perturbation could come from the quantum fluctuations of another light 'curvaton' field, rather than the inflaton. In this case, it is essential that the curvaton decays, converting its perturbation to an adiabatic perturbation. For the first time, we consistently account for this decay in the simplest curvaton model V(\sigma) = (m^2\sigma^2)/2 and point out that it gives rise to an important logarithmic correction to the potential. Moreover, the potential will also receive a correction from the thermal bath. As a consequence, the dynamics of the curvaton are substantially altered compared to the original model in the majority of the parameter space. It will therefore be necessary to re-calculate all the predictions of the original model., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Figures and discussion updated and clarified

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
There are observations of 15 high-redshift massive galaxy clusters, which have an extremely small probability with a purely Gaussian initial curvature perturbation. Here we revisit the estimation of the contribution of non-Gaussianities to the cluster mass function and point out serious problems that have resulted in the application of the mass function out of the range of its validity. We remedy the situation and show that the values of f_NL previously claimed to completely reconcile (i.e. at ~100% confidence) the existence of the clusters with LambdaCDM are unphysically small. However, for WMAP cosmology and at 95% confidence, we arrive at the limit f_NL>411, which is similar to previous estimates. We also explore the possibility of a large g_NL as the reason for the observed excess of the massive galaxy clusters. This scenario, g_NL>2*10^6, appears to be in more agreement with CMB and LSS limits for the non-Gaussianity parameters and could also provide an explanation for the overabundance of large voids in the early universe., Comment: Matches version published back in April. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We consider the constraints for a curvaton with mass m ~ 1 TeV and show that they are not consistent with a purely quadratic potential. Even if the curvaton self-interactions were very weak, they must be accounted for as they affect the dynamical evolution of the curvature perturbation. We show that the only TeV-mass curvaton interaction potential that yields the correct perturbation amplitude, decays before the dark matter freeze-out, and does not give rise to non-Gaussian perturbations that are in conflict with the present limits, is given by V_int= sigma^8/M^4. The decay width of the curvaton should be in the range Gamma= 10^-15...10^-17 GeV. The model typically predicts large non-linearity parameters f_NL and g_NL that should be observable by the Planck satellite. We also discuss various physical possibilities to obtain the required small curvaton decay rate.

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We investigate non-Gaussianities in self-interacting curvaton models treating both renormalizable and non-renormalizable polynomial interactions. We scan the parameter space systematically and compute numerically the non-linearity parameters f_NL and g_NL. We find that even in the interaction dominated regime there are large regions consistent with current observable bounds. Whenever the interactions dominate, we discover significant deviations from the relations f_NL ~ 1/r_decay and g_NL ~ 1/r_decay valid for quadratic curvaton potentials, where r_decay measures the curvaton contribution to the total energy density at the time of its decay. Even if r_decay << 1, there always exists regions with f_NL ~ 0 since the sign of f_NL oscillates as a function of the parameters. While g_NL can also change sign, typically g_NL is non-zero in the low-f_NL regions. Hence, for some parameters the non-Gaussian statistics is dominated by g_NL rather than by f_NL. Due to self-interactions, both the relative signs of f_NL and g_NL and the functional relation between them is typically modified from the quadratic case, offering a possible experimental test of the curvaton interactions., Comment: Acknowledgments of financial support added, no further changes

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We present a systematic study of the amplitude of the primordial perturbation in curvaton models with self-interactions, treating both renormalizable and non-renormalizable interactions. In particular, we consider the possibility that the curvaton energy density is subdominant at the time of the curvaton decay. We find that large regions in the parameter space give rise to the observed amplitude of primordial perturbation even for non-renormalizable curvaton potentials, for which the curvaton energy density dilutes fast. At the time of its decay, the curvaton energy density may typically be subdominant by a relative factor of 10^-3 and still produce the observed perturbation. Field dynamics turns out to be highly non-trivial, and for non-renormalizable potentials and certain regions of the parameter space we observe a non-monotonous relation between the final curvature perturbation and the initial curvaton value. In those cases, the time evolution of the primordial perturbation also displays an oscillatory behaviour before the curvaton decay., Comment: Acknowledgments of financial support added, no further changes

Purpose If a person experiences both loneliness and mental ill health, it may have severe effects on a person’s wellbeing and functioning. This study explored the ways in which loneliness may be entangled with mental ill health and the factors that contribute to the development of such entanglements. Methods The study participants were women from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 study, who, in 2001–2002, responded to the survey about being very lonely at the age of 15–16. Women (n = 17) were interviewed again at age 27–28 with semi-structured interviews. Data was analysed with thematic analysis. Results Loneliness and mental ill health formed four types of entanglements: Entanglement 1 (E1): “Loneliness periodically evoked depressive feelings”; E2: “Loneliness and depressive feelings formed an ongoing spiral”; E3: “Loneliness and diagnosed depression/serious emotional disturbance formed periodic spirals;” and E4: “Serious emotional disturbance/mental illness and loneliness formed an ongoing, difficult spiral.” Social adversities like unsafe family environment, lack of close friends, and school violence contributed to the development of Entanglements 1–3. In Entanglement 4, serious mental health disorder caused loneliness. Conclusions Loneliness was centrally linked to mental health issues in the present study and should be taken into consideration when providing mental health prevention and treatment.

- Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to explore whether active participation in a longitudinal birth cohort study is associated with study participants’ health behaviour and well-being. Methods: The subjects of this study were part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. The follow-up data were collected through clinical examinations and questionnaires when the cohort members were 1, 14, 31 and 46 years old. In this study, cohort participation activity was divided into three categories: active, semiactive and least active. Results: The total number of study participants who participated in the 46-year follow-up on both the survey and clinical trials was 6392, of which 66.5% (n=4268) participated actively in the cohort study. A total of 67.6% were female (p<0.001). Of the participants, 23.7% (n=1519) were semiactive and 9.5% (n=605) were the least active. Women who participated least actively experienced statistically significantly more depressive symptoms and poorer health, were more dissatisfied with their lives and had more addiction problems. In men, there was not a statistically significant association between participation activity and these well-being variables other than addiction problems and mental health. Conclusions: The findings indicate that participation activity is associated with better self-reported health and well-being, especially among women. With this knowledge, people can be encouraged to participate in longitudinal health research and, at the same time, may improve their own health and quality of life.

- Abstract
There are strong reasons to assume that early onset of puberty accelerates coital debut among adolescent girls. Although many studies support this assumption, evidence regarding the putative causal processes is limited and inconclusive. In this research, longitudinal data from the 1986 Northern Finland Birth Cohort Study (N = 2,596) were used to address three theoretical explanations: (a) a "direct" effect premised on biological processes, (b) a "mediated" path based on social psychological processes, and (c) a "spurious" effect derived from the evolutionary theory of socialization. In support of the social psychological pathway, the negative association between age at menarche and coital status at age 15 was almost fully mediated by differential "social exposure"--an empirical construct measuring involvement in high-risk social contexts.

Ammattikorkeakouluopintojen opinnäytetöiden aiempi tutkimus on kohdistunut opiskelijan ammatilliseen kasvuun, opinnäytetyön ohjaukseen, arviointiin ja valmistumiseen. Artikkelin uusi näkökulma on opinnäytetyön koetussa hyödyssä ammattikorkeakoulusta valmistuneiden alumnien arvioimana. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin alumnikyselyssä, joka tutkittavassa ammattikorkeakoulussa toteutettiin keväällä 2020. Kysely kohdistettiin alumneille, joiden tutkinnon suorittamisesta oli kaksi vuotta. Artikkeli perustuu 644 alumnin vastauksiin ja osa-aineistona kyseisen ammattikorkeakoulun kolmessa suurimmassa koulutusohjelmassa tutkintonsa suorittaneiden alumnien vastauksiin (n=296), koska niiden vastaajamäärät mahdollistivat tilastollisen vertailun. Aineisto analysoitiin kuvailevilla tilastollisilla menetelmillä. Lisäksi testattiin muuttujien välisiä yhteyksiä. Avoimien kysymysten vastaukset analysoitiin temaattisella sisällön analyysilla. Jatkossa tulisi pohtia, miten korkeakoulun, työelämän ja opiskelijan intressit saadaan kohtaamaan siten, että opiskelijat voivat kokea opinnäytetyön hyödylliseksi työn ja oppimisen integroinnissa., The research of theses in higher education have focused on student’s professional growth, supervision, evaluation and completion of thesis work. This article examines the experiences of higher education graduates, alumni, about thesis and its benefits. The data was collected via alumni survey, which was done in spring 2020. The target group had graduated from the University of Applied Sciences two years earlier. This article is based on data of 644 alumni and, as sub-data, on the responses of graduates of the three largest degree programmes (n=296). The data were analysed by descriptive statistical methods and, in addition, the associations between the variables were tested. The open-ended questions were analysed by thematic content analysis. According to the results, the form of thesis (research, functional or diary) was related to the perceived benefits. Thesis was most beneficial to development of expertise. In the thesis process following competencies were emphasised: scientific writing, systematic information processing, information retrieval and justification of activities.

Objective: Comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and quality of work disabilities and unmet needs for health care and rehabilitation to support return to work (RTW) among jobseekers. Design: Community-level, cross-sectional analysis with multidimensional clinical work ability assessments. Setting: Paltamo, Finland. Participants: Unemployed citizens either participating in the Full-Employment Project or long-term unemployed (n = 230, 81%). Main outcome measures: Based on data from theme interviews, patient records, supervisors’ observations of work performance and clinical examinations, a physician concluded the individual’s work ability, categorised into four groups: good work ability, good work ability expected after RTW support, able to transitional work only or unable to work. These groups were cross tabulated with primary diagnoses, types of plans to support RTW, as well as categories of social functioning and motivation, for which sensitivity and specificity scores in detecting work disability were calculated. Results: Only about half of the jobseekers had good work ability, 27% were found unable to work in the open labour market and 15% even eligible for a disability pension. For 20%, care or rehabilitation was seen necessary to enable RTW. Poor supervisor- and self-rated performance at work or poor social functioning appeared as sensitive measures in detecting work disability. Conclusions: Work disabilities and unmet needs for health care and rehabilitation are highly prevalent among jobseekers, as depicted using a multidimensional work ability assessment procedure inspired by the International Classification of Functioning (ICF). Further development of work ability assessment practices is clearly needed.KEY POINTS Although the association of unemployment with poor health is well known, evidence on the work ability of the unemployed remains scarce. Work disabilities are common among the unemployed. Multidimensional work ability assessment among the unemployed reveals unmet needs for care and rehabilitation to support return to work. Context sensitivity may add to the accuracy of the doctor’s conclusions on work ability.

- Abstract
Data from the 1986 Northern Finland Birth Cohort Study (n = 4,645) were used to examine the influence of mid-adolescent (age 15) school outcomes on late-adolescent (ages 17-19) risk of criminal conviction. Consistent with social-developmental theories of offending, we found that poor academic performance and reduced school attachment increase the risk of criminal conviction independently of pre-existing differences in antisocial propensity and other confounding factors identified in prior research. Moreover, in support of an integrated model, our research suggests that academic performance and school attachment mediate the effects of childhood antisociality and learning difficulties on late-adolescent risk of criminal conviction. The implications of findings for policy and future research are discussed.

Aims: Rates of parental separation have increased dramatically in recent decades. We evaluated the association of individuals’ childhood family structure with their somatic health over 46 years of follow-up. Methods: Data were drawn from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort, an ongoing project in which 12,058 participants born in 1966 have been followed from their 24th gestational week. Based on information supplied at age 14 years, family structure was categorised as ‘single-parent family’ and ‘two-parent family’. The anthropometric information, data from blood samples and medical history were collected from postal questionnaires and clinical examinations routinely performed at the ages of 31 and 46 years. Results: The study population comprised a total of 10,895 individuals; 85% ( n=9253) were offspring of two-parent families and 15% ( n=1642) of single-parent families. Type 2 diabetes ( P=0.032) or prediabetes ( P=0.007), psychoactive drug problems ( P

- Abstract
This study examined whether physical activity, mental health and socio-economic position were associated with the overall academic performance and future educational plans of adolescents aged 15-16 years. We used a sample of 7002 boys and girls from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986. Data were collected by a postal enquiry in 2001-02. Multivariable logistic regression models were estimated and adjusted for family structure and all variables in the models. In the fully adjusted models, higher levels of physical activity and high parental socio-economic position were associated with higher overall academic performance and future plans for higher education. High scoring on behavioural problems was related to lower overall academic performance and poorer future academic plans. In summary, a higher level of physical activity, fewer behavioural problems and higher socio-economic position were independently associated with high self-perceived overall academic performance and plans for higher education among adolescents. The interrelations of these factors and the positive relationship between physical activity, mental health and school outcomes provide a context of critical importance for future research, intervention programming and policy directed at improving the educational attainment of adolescents.

46. Is Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Related to Inattention and Hyperactivity Symptoms in Children? Disentangling the Effects of Social Adversity

- Abstract
Background: Studies concerning whether exposure to low levels of maternal alcohol consumption during fetal development is related to child inattention and hyperactivity symptoms have shown conflicting results. We examine the contribution of covariates related to social adversity to resolve some inconsistencies in the extant research by conducting parallel analyses of three cohorts with varying alcohol consumption and attitudes towards alcohol use. Methods: We compare three population-based pregnancy--offspring cohorts within the Nordic Network on ADHD from Denmark and Finland. Prenatal data were gathered via self-report during pregnancy and birth outcomes were abstracted from medical charts. A total of 21,678 reports concerning inattention and hyperactivity symptoms in children were available from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire or the Rutter Scale completed by parents and/or teachers. Results: Drinking patterns differed cross-nationally. Women who had at least some social adversity (young, low education, or being single) were more likely to drink than those better off in the Finnish cohort, but the opposite was true for the Danish cohorts. Prenatal alcohol exposure was not related to risk for a high inattention-hyperactivity symptom score in children across cohorts after adjustment for covariates. In contrast, maternal smoking and social adversity during pregnancy were independently and consistently associated with an increase in risk of child symptoms. Conclusions: Low doses of alcohol consumption during pregnancy were not related to child inattention/hyperactivity symptoms once social adversity and smoking were taken into account.

- Abstract
A study aims to analyze whether behaviors of attention-deficit, hyperactivity among adolescents in Northern Finland reflect distinct subtypes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The results conclude that the majority of the Cohort falls into low-scoring groups of unaffecteds while a high-scoring minority group reflects an ADHD group.
