Context: Over the past decade, the adoption of Microservice Architecture (MSA) has led to the identification of various patterns and anti-patterns, such as Nano/Mega/Hub services. Detecting these anti-patterns often involves modeling the system as a Service Dependency Graph (SDG) and applying graph-theoretic approaches. Aim: While previous research has explored software metrics (SMs) such as size, complexity, and quality for assessing MSAs, the potential of graph-specific metrics like network centrality remains largely unexplored. This study investigates whether centrality metrics (CMs) can provide new insights into MSA quality and facilitate the detection of architectural anti-patterns, complementing or extending traditional SMs. Method: We analyzed 24 open-source MSA projects, reconstructing their architectures to study 53 microservices. We measured SMs and CMs for each microservice and tested their correlation to determine the relationship between these metric types. Results and Conclusion: Among 902 computed metric correlations, we found weak to moderate correlation in 282 cases. These findings suggest that centrality metrics offer a novel perspective for understanding MSA properties. Specifically, ratio-based centrality metrics show promise for detecting specific anti-patterns, while subgraph centrality needs further investigation for its applicability in architectural assessments.

Context. The security of critical infrastructure has been a pressing concern since the advent of computers and has become even more critical in today's era of cyber warfare. Protecting mission-critical systems (MCSs), essential for national security, requires swift and robust governance, yet recent events reveal the increasing difficulty of meeting these challenges. Aim. Building on prior research showcasing the potential of Generative AI (GAI), such as Large Language Models, in enhancing risk analysis, we aim to explore practitioners' views on integrating GAI into the governance of IT MCSs. Our goal is to provide actionable insights and recommendations for stakeholders, including researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Method. We designed a survey to collect practical experiences, concerns, and expectations of practitioners who develop and implement security solutions in the context of MCSs. Conclusions and Future Works. Our findings highlight that the safe use of LLMs in MCS governance requires interdisciplinary collaboration. Researchers should focus on designing regulation-oriented models and focus on accountability; practitioners emphasize data protection and transparency, while policymakers must establish a unified AI framework with global benchmarks to ensure ethical and secure LLMs-based MCS governance.

Architecture recovery tools help software engineers obtain an overview of the structure of their software systems during all phases of the software development life cycle. This is especially important for microservice applications because they consist of multiple interacting microservices, which makes it more challenging to oversee the architecture. Various tools and techniques for architecture recovery (also called architecture reconstruction) have been presented in academic and gray literature sources, but no overview and comparison of their accuracy exists. This paper presents the results of a multivocal literature review with the goal of identifying architecture recovery tools for microservice applications and a comparison of the identified tools' architectural recovery accuracy. We focused on static tools since they can be integrated into fast-paced CI/CD pipelines. 13 such tools were identified from the literature and nine of them could be executed and compared on their capability of detecting different system characteristics. The best-performing tool exhibited an overall F1-score of 0.86. Additionally, the possibility of combining multiple tools to increase the recovery correctness was investigated, yielding a combination of four individual tools that achieves an F1-score of 0.91. The widespread use of social media has highlighted potential negative impacts on society and individuals, largely driven by recommendation algorithms that shape user behavior and social dynamics. Understanding these algorithms is essential but challenging due to the complex, distributed nature of social media networks as well as limited access to real-world data. This study proposes to use academic social networks as a proxy for investigating recommendation systems in social media. By employing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), we develop a model that separates the prediction of academic infosphere from behavior prediction, allowing us to simulate recommender-generated infospheres and assess the model's performance in predicting future co-authorships. Our approach aims to improve our understanding of recommendation systems' roles and social networks modeling. Code Technical Debt prediction has become a popular research niche in recent software engineering literature. Technical Debt is an important metric in software projects as it measures professionals' effort to clean the code. Therefore, predicting its future behavior becomes a crucial task. However, no well-defined and consistent approach can completely capture the features that impact the evolution of Code Technical Debt. The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of considering time-dependent techniques as well as seasonal effects in temporal data in the prediction performance within the context of Code Technical Debt. The study adopts existing, yet not extensively adopted, time-dependent prediction techniques and compares their prediction performance to commonly used Machine Learning models. Further, the study strengthens the evaluation of time-dependent methods by extending the analysis to capture the impact of seasonality in Code Technical Debt data. We trained 11 prediction models using the commit history of 31 open-source projects developed with Java. We predicted the future observations of the SQALE index to evaluate their predictive performance. Our study confirms the positive impact of considering time-dependent techniques. The adopted multivariate time series analysis model ARIMAX overcame the rest of the adopted models. Incorporating seasonal effects led to an enhancement in the predictive performance of the adopted time-dependent techniques. However, the impact of this effect was found to be relatively modest. The findings of this study corroborate our position in favor of implementing techniques that capture the existing time dependence within historical data of software metrics, specifically in the context of this study, namely, Code Technical Debt. This necessitates the utilization of techniques that can effectively address this evidence.

Efficient emergency response systems are crucial for smart cities. But their implementation is highly challenging, particularly in regions like Chad where infrastructural constraints are prevalent. The urgency for optimized response times and resource allocation in emergency scenarios is magnified in these contexts, yet existing solutions often assume robust infrastructure and uninterrupted connectivity, which is not always available. Most of the time, they are based on system architectures pre-designed for other purposes. This paper addresses these critical challenges by proposing a comprehensive system architecture that integrates Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), Dijkstra's algorithm, and Edge Computing. The objective is to enhance emergency response through accelerated route planning and resource allocation, addressing gaps left by traditional cloud-based systems. Methodologically, key characteristics of the desired system are identified, then its components are described and their integration is explained; the system leverages FPGA-based computations and a distributed implementation of Dijkstra's algorithm to compute the shortest paths rapidly, while Edge Computing ensures decentralized and resilient processing. A theoretical analysis highlights promising improvements in response times and resource management. The proposed system architecture not only enhances emergency response efficiency but is also adaptable to infrastructural constraints of Chadian-like environments.

The accelerated adoption of AI-based software demands precise development guidelines to guarantee reliability, scalability, and ethical compliance. MLOps (Machine Learning and Operations) guidelines have emerged as the principal reference in this field, paving the way for the development of high-level automated tools and applications. Despite the introduction of MLOps guidelines, there is still a degree of skepticism surrounding their implementation, with a gradual adoption rate across many companies. In certain instances, a lack of awareness about MLOps has resulted in organizations adopting similar approaches unintentionally, frequently without a comprehensive understanding of the associated best practices and principles. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the actual adoption of MLOps (or comparable) guidelines in different business contexts. To this end, we surveyed practitioners representing a range of business environments to understand how MLOps is adopted and perceived in their companies. The results of this survey also shed light on other pertinent aspects related to the advantages and challenges of these guidelines, the learning curve associated with them, and the future trends that can be derived from this information. This study aims to provide deeper insight into MLOps and its impact on the next phase of innovation in machine learning. By doing so, we aim to lay the foundation for more efficient, reliable, and creative AI applications in the future.

Context. In less than a year practitioners and researchers witnessed a rapid and wide implementation of Generative Artificial Intelligence. The daily availability of new models proposed by practitioners and researchers has enabled quick adoption. Textual GAIs capabilities enable researchers worldwide to explore new generative scenarios simplifying and hastening all timeconsuming text generation and analysis tasks. Motivation. The exponentially growing number of publications in our field with the increased accessibility to information due to digital libraries makes conducting systematic literature reviews and mapping studies an effort and timeinsensitive task Stemmed from this challenge we investigated and envisioned the role of GAIs in evidencebased software engineering. Future Directions. Based on our current investigation we will follow up the vision with the creation and empirical validation of a comprehensive suite of models to effectively support EBSE researchers

[Context] The adoption of micro-frontends architectures has gained traction as a promising approach to enhance modularity, scalability, and maintainability of web applications. [Goal] The primary aim of this research is to investigate the benefits and limitations of migrating a real-world application to a micro-frontends architecture from the perspective of the developers. [Method] Based on the action research approach, after diagnosis and planning, we applied an intervention of migrating the target web application to a micro-frontends architecture. Thereafter, the migration was evaluated in a workshop involving the remaining developers responsible for maintaining the application. During the workshop, these developers were presented with the migrated architecture, conducted a simple maintenance task, discussed benefits and limitations in a focus group to gather insights, and answered a questionnaire on the acceptance of the technology. [Results] Developers' perceptions gathered during the focus group reinforce the benefits and limitations reported in the literature. Key benefits included enhanced flexibility in technology choices, scalability of development teams, and gradual migration of technologies. However, the increased complexity of the architecture raised concerns among developers, particularly in dependency and environment management, debugging, and integration testing. [Conclusions] While micro-frontends represent a promising technology, unresolved issues still limit their broader applicability. Developers generally perceived the architecture as useful and moderately easy to use but hesitated to adopt it.

In the era of 6G, developing and managing software requires cutting-edge software engineering (SE) theories and practices tailored for such complexity across a vast number of connected edge devices. Our project aims to lead the development of sustainable methods and energy-efficient orchestration models specifically for edge environments, enhancing architectural support driven by AI for contemporary edge-to-cloud continuum computing. This initiative seeks to position Finland at the forefront of the 6G landscape, focusing on sophisticated edge orchestration and robust software architectures to optimize the performance and scalability of edge networks. Collaborating with leading Finnish universities and companies, the project emphasizes deep industry-academia collaboration and international expertise to address critical challenges in edge orchestration and software architecture, aiming to drive significant advancements in software productivity and market impact.

Examining the community structures within intricate networks is crucial for comprehending their intrinsic dynamics and functionality. The paper presents the Fast Local Move Iterated Greedy (FLMIG) algorithm, a novel method designed to effectively identify community structures in intricate networks. The FLMIG algorithm improves the modularity optimization process by including a rapid local move heuristic and an iterated greedy mechanism that switches between destructive and constructive phases to strengthen the community partitions. The main innovation is the integration of random neighbor moves with an enhanced Prune Louvain algorithm, which guarantees fast convergence while maintaining the connection of the identified communities. The results of our comprehensive studies, conducted on both synthetic and and real-world networks, clearly show that FLMIG surpasses existing cutting-edge techniques in terms of both accuracy and computing efficiency. This algorithm not only provides a strong tool for identifying communities, but also makes a valuable contribution to the broader field of network analysis by offering a method that can effectively handle large-scale and dynamically evolving networks.

Context. Risk analysis assesses potential risks in specific scenarios. Risk analysis principles are context-less; the same methodology can be applied to a risk connected to health and information technology security. Risk analysis requires a vast knowledge of national and international regulations and standards and is time and effort-intensive. A large language model can quickly summarize information in less time than a human and can be fine-tuned to specific tasks. Aim. Our empirical study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Retrieval-Augmented Generation and fine-tuned LLM in risk analysis. To our knowledge, no prior study has explored its capabilities in risk analysis. Method. We manually curated 193 unique scenarios leading to 1283 representative samples from over 50 mission-critical analyses archived by the industrial context team in the last five years. We compared the base GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models versus their Retrieval-Augmented Generation and fine-tuned counterparts. We employ two human experts as competitors of the models and three other human experts to review the models and the former human experts' analysis. The reviewers analyzed 5,000 scenario analyses. Results and Conclusions. Human experts demonstrated higher accuracy, but LLMs are quicker and more actionable. Moreover, our findings show that RAG-assisted LLMs have the lowest hallucination rates, effectively uncovering hidden risks and complementing human expertise. Thus, the choice of model depends on specific needs, with FTMs for accuracy, RAG for hidden risks discovery, and base models for comprehensiveness and actionability. Therefore, experts can leverage LLMs as an effective complementing companion in risk analysis within a condensed timeframe. They can also save costs by averting unnecessary expenses associated with implementing unwarranted countermeasures.

Quantum computing, albeit readily available as hardware or emulated on the cloud, is still far from being available in general regarding complex programming paradigms and learning curves. This vision paper introduces $Classi|Q\rangle$, a translation framework idea to bridge Classical and Quantum Computing by translating high-level programming languages, e.g., Python or C++, into a low-level language, e.g., Quantum Assembly. Our idea paper serves as a blueprint for ongoing efforts in quantum software engineering, offering a roadmap for further $Classi|Q\rangle$ development to meet the diverse needs of researchers and practitioners. $Classi|Q\rangle$ is designed to empower researchers and practitioners with no prior quantum experience to harness the potential of hybrid quantum computation. We also discuss future enhancements to $Classi|Q\rangle$, including support for additional quantum languages, improved optimization strategies, and integration with emerging quantum computing platforms.

The galaxy system around NGC4490 was recently highlighted to display a flattened, kinematically correlated structure reminiscent of satellite galaxy planes around other hosts. Since known satellite planes are in tension with $\Lambda$CDM expectations from cosmological simulations, we quantitatively assess for the first time the tension posed by the NGC4490 system. We measure the on-sky flattening as the major-to-minor axis ratio b/a of the satellite distribution and their line-of-sight kinematic correlation. Analogs are selected in the IllustrisTNG-50 simulation and their flattening and correlation are similarly measured. We confirm the strong kinematic coherence of all 12 observed objects with available line-of-sight velocities (of 14 in total): the northern ones approach and the southern ones recede relative to the host. The spatial distribution of all 14 objects is substantially flattened with b/a=0.38 (0.26 considering only the 12 objects with velocities). Such extreme arrangements are rare in the simulation at 0.21-0.35%. This would drop further if at least one of the two satellite objects without velocities is confirmed to follow the kinematic trend, and would become zero if both are rejected as non-members. We also identify a likely galaxy pair in the observed system, and find a similar pair in the best-matching simulated analog. Our findings establish NGC4490 as another strong example of a satellite plane in the Local Volume. This emphasizes that planes of satellites are a more general issue faced by $\Lambda$CDM also beyond the Local Group. The tension with typical systems in simulations suggests that the observed one requires a specific formation scenario, potentially connected to the larger-scale galaxy alignment in its vicinity. 6G will revolutionize the software world allowing faster cellular communications and a massive number of connected devices. 6G will enable a shift towards a continuous edge-to-cloud architecture. Current cloud solutions, where all the data is transferred and computed in the cloud, are not sustainable in such a large network of devices. Current technologies, including development methods, software architectures, and orchestration and offloading systems, still need to be prepared to cope with such requirements. In this paper, we conduct a Systematic Mapping Study to investigate the current research status of 6G Software Engineering. Results show that 18 research papers have been proposed in software process, software architecture, orchestration and offloading methods. Of these, software architecture and software-defined networks are respectively areas and topics that have received the most attention in 6G Software Engineering. In addition, the main types of results of these papers are methods, architectures, platforms, frameworks and algorithms. For the five tools/frameworks proposed, they are new and not currently studied by other researchers. The authors of these findings are mainly from China, India and Saudi Arabia. The results will enable researchers and practitioners to further research and extend for 6G Software Engineering.

Context. Within $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) simulations, Milky Way-like galaxies accrete some of their satellite galaxies in groups of 3-5 members rather than individually. It was also suggested that this might be the reason behind the origin of satellite planes. Objects accreted in groups are expected to share similar specific total energy and angular momentum, and also identical orbital planes and directions. Aims. Looking at observations of Milky Way satellites, the dwarf galaxies Leo II, IV, V, Crater II, and the star cluster Crater 1 were proposed to be a vestige of group infall. The suggested "Crater-Leo group" shows a coherent distance gradient and all these objects align along a great circle on the sky. We use proper motion data to investigate whether the phase-space distribution of the members of the proposed group are indeed consistent with group infall. Methods. To further investigate this possibility, we use Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) and new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) proper motions, $(\mu_{\alpha*}, \mu_\delta) = (-0.1921 \pm 0.0514, -0.0686 \pm 0.0523)$ mas yr$^{-1}$ for Leo IV and $(\mu_{\alpha*}, \mu_\delta) = (0.1186 \pm 0.1943, -0.1183 \pm 0.1704)$ mas yr$^{-1}$ for Leo V, to derive accurate orbital properties for the proposed group objects. In addition, we explore other possible members of this putative association. Results. Leo II, Leo IV, and Crater 1 show orbital properties consistent with those we predict from assuming group infall. However, our results suggest that Crater II was not accreted with the rest of the objects. If confirmed with increasingly accurate proper motions in the future, the Crater-Leo objects appear to constitute the first identified case of a cosmologically expected, typical group infall event, as opposed to the highly hierarchical Magellanic Cloud system., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on 23-04-2024. 20 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables

This paper introduces a vision for Quantum Software Development lifecycle, proposing a hybrid full-stack iterative model that integrates quantum and classical computing. Addressing the current challenges in Quantum Computing (QC) such as the need for integrating diverse programming languages and managing the complexities of quantum-classical systems, this model is rooted in the principles of DevOps and continuous software engineering. It presents a comprehensive lifecycle for quantum software development, encompassing quantum-agnostic coding, testing, deployment, cloud computing services, orchestration, translation, execution, and interpretation phases. Each phase is designed to accommodate the unique demands of QC, enabling traditional software developers to engage with QC environments without needing in-depth QC expertise. The paper presents a detailed implementation roadmap, utilizing a range of existing tools and frameworks, thereby making quantum software development more accessible and efficient. The proposed model not only addresses current challenges in quantum software development but also makes a substantial contribution to the field of Quantum Software Engineering (QSE). By proposing a structured and accessible model, it sets the stage for further advancements and research in QSE, enhancing its practicality and relevance in a wide range of applications.

Quantum Computing (QC) is transitioning from theoretical frameworks to an indispensable powerhouse of computational capability, resulting in extensive adoption across both industrial and academic domains. QC presents exceptional advantages, including unparalleled processing speed and the potential to solve complex problems beyond the capabilities of classical computers. Nevertheless, academic researchers and industry practitioners encounter various challenges in harnessing the benefits of this technology. The limited accessibility of QC resources for classical developers, and a general lack of domain knowledge and expertise, represent insurmountable barrier, hence to address these challenges, we introduce a framework- Quantum Computing as a Service for Hybrid Classical-Quantum Software Development (QCSHQD), which leverages service-oriented strategies. Our framework comprises three principal components: an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for user interaction, an abstraction layer dedicated to orchestrating quantum services, and a service provider responsible for executing services on quantum computer. This study presents a blueprint for QCSHQD, designed to democratize access to QC resources for classical developers who want to seamless harness QC power. The vision of QCSHQD paves the way for groundbreaking innovations by addressing key challenges of hybridization between classical and quantum computers.

The kinematics and chemical composition of stellar populations of different ages provide crucial information about the evolution of a galaxy. We aim to provide such information for IC 1613, an isolated, gas-rich, star-forming dwarf galaxy in the Local Group. We present here the results of a new spectroscopic study performed with MUSE, an integral-field spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. We extracted from the data cubes more than 2000 sources from which we separated stellar objects for further spectroscopic analysis. The quality of the data set allowed us to obtain accurate classifications and line-of-sight velocities for about 800 stars. Our sample includes not only Red Giant Branch (RGB) and Main Sequence (MS) stars, but also a number of probable Be and C stars. We also obtained reliable metallicities for about 300 RGB stars. The kinematic analysis revealed for the first time the presence of stellar rotation with high significance. We found general agreement with the rotation velocity of the neutral gas component. Examining the kinematics of stars as a function of broad age ranges, we find that the velocity dispersion increases as a function of age, with the behaviour being very clear in the outermost pointings, while the rotation-to-velocity dispersion support decreases. On timescales shorter than a Gyr, the stellar kinematics still follow very closely that of the neutral gas, while the two components decouple on longer timescales. The chemical analysis of the RGB stars revealed average properties comparable to other Local Group dwarf galaxies. We also provide a new estimation of the inclination angle using only independent stellar tracers. Our work provides the largest spectroscopic sample of an isolated LG dwarf galaxy. The results obtained seem to support the scenario in which the stars of a dwarf galaxy are born from a less turbulent gas over time., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. It has been observed that several Milky Way (MW) satellite dwarf galaxies are distributed along a coherent planar distribution known as the Vast Polar Structure (VPOS). Here we investigate whether MW satellites located on the VPOS have different physical and orbital properties from those not associated with it. Using the proper motion measurements of the MW satellites from the \textit{Gaia} mission and literature values for their observational parameters, we first discriminate between systems that may or may not be associated with the VPOS, and then compare their chemical and dynamical properties. Comparing the luminosity distributions of the on-plane and off-plane samples, we find an excess of bright satellites observed on the VPOS. Despite this luminosity gap, we do not observe a significant preference for on-plane and off-plane systems to follow different scaling relations. The on-plane systems also show a striking pattern in their radial velocities and orbital phases: co-orbiting satellites are almost all approaching their pericenters, while both counter-orbiting satellites are leaving their last pericenters. This contrasts with the more random distribution of the off-plane sample. The on-plane systems also tend to have the lowest orbital energies for a given value of angular momentum. These results are robust to the assumed MW potential, even in the case of a potential perturbed by the arrival of a massive LMC. Considering them a significant property of the VPOS, we explore several scenarios, all related to the late accretion of satellite systems, which interpret the VPOS as a young structure. We hypothesise that the VPOS formed as a result of the accretion of a group of dwarf galaxies. Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits these Service Interface Function (SIF) images of crowded fields (CFs), making use of the availability of the full two-dimensional (2D) information. This new pipeline produced half a million additional Gaia sources in the region of the omega Centauri ($\omega$ Cen) cluster, which are published with this Focused Product Release. We discuss the dedicated SIF CF data reduction pipeline, validate its data products, and introduce their Gaia archive table. Our aim is to improve the completeness of the {\it Gaia} source inventory in a very dense region in the sky, $\omega$ Cen. An adapted version of {\it Gaia}'s Source Detection and Image Parameter Determination software located sources in the 2D SIF CF images. We validated the results by comparing them to the public {\it Gaia} DR3 catalogue and external Hubble Space Telescope data. With this Focused Product Release, 526\,587 new sources have been added to the {\it Gaia} catalogue in $\omega$ Cen. Apart from positions and brightnesses, the additional catalogue contains parallaxes and proper motions, but no meaningful colour information. While SIF CF source parameters generally have a lower precision than nominal {\it Gaia} sources, in the cluster centre they increase the depth of the combined catalogue by three magnitudes and improve the source density by a factor of ten. This first SIF CF data publication already adds great value to the {\it Gaia} catalogue. It demonstrates what to expect for the fourth {\it Gaia} catalogue, which will contain additional sources for all nine SIF CF regions.

Context. Strongly lensed quasars are fundamental sources for cosmology. The Gaia space mission covers the entire sky with the unprecedented resolution of $0.18$" in the optical, making it an ideal instrument to search for gravitational lenses down to the limiting magnitude of 21. Nevertheless, the previous Gaia Data Releases are known to be incomplete for small angular separations such as those expected for most lenses. Aims. We present the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium GravLens pipeline, which was built to analyse all Gaia detections around quasars and to cluster them into sources, thus producing a catalogue of secondary sources around each quasar. We analysed the resulting catalogue to produce scores that indicate source configurations that are compatible with strongly lensed quasars. Methods. GravLens uses the DBSCAN unsupervised clustering algorithm to detect sources around quasars. The resulting catalogue of multiplets is then analysed with several methods to identify potential gravitational lenses. We developed and applied an outlier scoring method, a comparison between the average BP and RP spectra of the components, and we also used an extremely randomised tree algorithm. These methods produce scores to identify the most probable configurations and to establish a list of lens candidates. Results. We analysed the environment of 3 760 032 quasars. A total of 4 760 920 sources, including the quasars, were found within 6" of the quasar positions. This list is given in the Gaia archive. In 87\% of cases, the quasar remains a single source, and in 501 385 cases neighbouring sources were detected. We propose a list of 381 lensed candidates, of which we identified 49 as the most promising. The third Gaia Data Release (DR3) provided photometric time series of more than 2 million long-period variable (LPV) candidates. Anticipating the publication of full radial-velocity (RV) in DR4, this Focused Product Release (FPR) provides RV time series for a selection of LPVs with high-quality observations. We describe the production and content of the Gaia catalog of LPV RV time series, and the methods used to compute variability parameters published in the Gaia FPR. Starting from the DR3 LPVs catalog, we applied filters to construct a sample of sources with high-quality RV measurements. We modeled their RV and photometric time series to derive their periods and amplitudes, and further refined the sample by requiring compatibility between the RV period and at least one of the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, or $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric periods. The catalog includes RV time series and variability parameters for 9\,614 sources in the magnitude range $6\lesssim G/{\rm mag}\lesssim 14$, including a flagged top-quality subsample of 6\,093 stars whose RV periods are fully compatible with the values derived from the $G$, $G_{\rm BP}$, and $G_{\rm RP}$ photometric time series. The RV time series contain a mean of 24 measurements per source taken unevenly over a duration of about three years. We identify the great most sources (88%) as genuine LPVs, with about half of them showing a pulsation period and the other half displaying a long secondary period. The remaining 12% consists of candidate ellipsoidal binaries. Quality checks against RVs available in the literature show excellent agreement. We provide illustrative examples and cautionary remarks. The publication of RV time series for almost 10\,000 LPVs constitutes, by far, the largest such database available to date in the literature. For traditional modular software systems, "high cohesion, low coupling" is a recommended setting while it remains so for microservice architectures. However, coupling phenomena commonly exist therein which are caused by cross-service calls and dependencies. In addition, it is noticeable that teams for microservice projects can also suffer from high coupling issues in terms of their cross-service contribution, which can inevitably result in technical debt and high managerial costs. Such organizational coupling needs to be detected and mitigated in time to prevent future losses. Recently the trend of companies switching from microservice back to monolith has increased, leading to intense debate in the industry. We conduct a multivocal literature review, to investigate reasons for the phenomenon and key aspects to pay attention to during the switching back and analyze the opinions of other practitioners. The results pave the way for further research and provide guidance for industrial companies switching from microservice back to monolith.

Microservice architecture gains momentum by fueling systems with cloud-native benefits, scalability, and decentralized evolution. However, new challenges emerge for end-to-end (E2E) testing. Testers who see the decentralized system through the user interface might assume their tests are comprehensive, covering all middleware endpoints scattered across microservices. However, they do not have instruments to verify such assumptions. This paper introduces test coverage metrics for evaluating the extent of E2E test suite coverage for microservice endpoints. Next, it presents an automated approach to compute these metrics to provide feedback on the completeness of E2E test suites. Furthermore, a visual perspective is provided to highlight test coverage across the system's microservices to guide on gaps in test suites. When developing and managing microservice systems, practitioners suggest that each microservice should be owned by a particular team. In effect, there is only one team with the responsibility to manage a given service. Consequently, one developer should belong to only one team. This practice of "one-microservice-per-developer" is especially prevalent in large projects with an extensive development team. Based on the bazaar-style software development model of Open Source Projects, in which different programmers, like vendors at a bazaar, offer to help out developing different parts of the system, this article investigates whether we can observe the "one-microservice-per-developer" behavior, a strategy we assume anticipated within microservice based Open Source Projects. We conducted an empirical study among 38 microservice-based OS projects. Our findings indicate that the strategy is rarely respected by open-source developers except for projects that have dedicated DevOps teams.

Artificial intelligence's (AI) progress holds great promise in tackling pressing societal concerns such as health and climate. Large Language Models (LLM) and the derived chatbots, like ChatGPT, have highly improved the natural language processing capabilities of AI systems allowing them to process an unprecedented amount of unstructured data. However, the ensuing excitement has led to negative sentiments, even as AI methods demonstrate remarkable contributions (e.g. in health and genetics). A key factor contributing to this sentiment is the misleading perception that LLMs can effortlessly provide solutions across domains, ignoring their limitations such as hallucinations and reasoning constraints. Acknowledging AI fallibility is crucial to address the impact of dogmatic overconfidence in possibly erroneous suggestions generated by LLMs. At the same time, it can reduce fear and other negative attitudes toward AI. This necessitates comprehensive AI literacy interventions that educate the public about LLM constraints and effective usage techniques, i.e prompting strategies. With this aim, a pilot educational intervention was performed in a high school with 21 students. It involved presenting high-level concepts about intelligence, AI, and LLMs, followed by practical exercises involving ChatGPT in creating natural educational conversations and applying established prompting strategies. Encouraging preliminary results emerged, including high appreciation of the activity, improved interaction quality with the LLM, reduced negative AI sentiments, and a better grasp of limitations, specifically unreliability, limited understanding of commands leading to unsatisfactory responses, and limited presentation flexibility. This paper Various studies cited in the literature deal with the classic problem of obstacle coverage, where the deployment environment, sensor nodes, and base stations have characteristics that are considered perfect but suffer from various flaws in the real world. This paper presents other barrier coverage types ranked in a new classification based on linear and nonlinear barrier coverage according to deterministic and insecure environments, and enumerates some of the different current and future challenges of these coverage types and connectivity in WSNs.

Testing microservice systems involves a large amount of planning and problem-solving. The difficulty of testing microservice systems increases as the size and structure of such systems become more complex. To help the microservice community and simplify experiments with testing and traffic simulation, we created a test benchmark containing full functional testing coverage for two well-established open-source microservice systems. Through our benchmark design, we aimed to demonstrate ways to overcome certain challenges and find effective strategies when testing microservices. In addition, to demonstrate our benchmark use, we conducted a case study to identify the best approaches to take to validate a full coverage of tests using service-dependency graph discovery and business process discovery using tracing., Comment: 7 pages

[Context] Coupling is a widely discussed metric by software engineers while developing complex software systems, often referred to as a crucial factor and symptom of a poor or good design. Nevertheless, measuring the logical coupling among microservices and analyzing the interactions between services is non-trivial because it demands runtime information in the form of log files, which are not always accessible. [Objective and Method] In this work, we propose the design of a study aimed at empirically validating the Microservice Logical Coupling (MLC) metric presented in our previous study. In particular, we plan to empirically study Open Source Systems (OSS) built using a microservice architecture. [Results] The result of this work aims at corroborating the effectiveness and validity of the MLC metric. Thus, we will gather empirical evidence and develop a methodology to analyze and support the claims regarding the MLC metric. Furthermore, we establish its usefulness in evaluating and understanding the logical coupling among microservices.

[Context] Microservices enable the decomposition of applications into small and independent services connected together. The independence between services could positively affect the development velocity of a project, which is considered an important metric measuring the time taken to implement features and fix bugs. However, no studies have investigated the connection between microservices and development velocity. [Objective and Method] The goal of this study plan is to investigate the effect microservices have on development velocity. The study compares GitHub projects adopting microservices from the beginning and similar projects using monolithic architectures. We designed this study using a cohort study method, to enable obtaining a high level of evidence. [Results] The result of this work enables the confirmation of the effective improvement of the development velocity of microservices. Moreover, this study will contribute to the body of knowledge of empirical methods being among the first works adopting the cohort study methodology.

Edge-to-cloud computing is an emerging paradigm for distributing computational tasks between edge devices and cloud resources. Different approaches for orchestration, offloading, and many more purposes have been introduced in research. However, it is still not clear what has been implemented in the industry. This work aims to merge this gap by mapping the existing knowledge on edge-to-cloud tools by providing an overview of the current state of research in this area and identifying research gaps and challenges. For this purpose, we conducted a Multivocal Literature Review (MLR) by analyzing 40 tools from 1073 primary studies (220 PS from the white literature and 853 PS from the gray literature). We categorized the tools based on their characteristics and targeted environments. Overall, this systematic mapping study provides a comprehensive overview of edge-to-cloud tools and highlights several opportunities for researchers and practitioners for future research in this area.

The use of AI in microservices (MSs) is an emerging field as indicated by a substantial number of surveys. However these surveys focus on a specific problem using specific AI techniques, therefore not fully capturing the growth of research and the rise and disappearance of trends. In our systematic mapping study, we take an exhaustive approach to reveal all possible connections between the use of AI techniques for improving any quality attribute (QA) of MSs during the DevOps phases. Our results include 16 research themes that connect to the intersection of particular QAs, AI domains and DevOps phases. The broad development and usage of edge devices has highlighted the importance of creating resilient and computationally advanced environments. When working with edge devices these desiderata are usually achieved through replication and offloading. This paper reports on the design and implementation of Workrs, a fault tolerant service that enables the offloading of jobs from devices with limited computational power. We propose a solution that allows users to upload jobs through a web service, which will be executed on edge nodes within the system. The solution is designed to be fault tolerant and scalable, with no single point of failure as well as the ability to accommodate growth, if the service is expanded. The use of Docker checkpointing on the worker machines ensures that jobs can be resumed in the event of a fault. We provide a mathematical approach to optimize the number of checkpoints that are created along a computation, given that we can forecast the time needed to execute a job. We present experiments that indicate in which scenarios checkpointing benefits job execution. The results achieved are based on a working prototype which shows clear benefits of using checkpointing and restore when the completion jobs' time rises compared with the forecast fault rate. Developers interrupting their participation in a project might slowly forget critical information about the code, such as its intended purpose, structure, the impact of external dependencies, and the approach used for implementation. Forgetting the implementation details can have detrimental effects on software maintenance, comprehension, knowledge sharing, and developer productivity, resulting in bugs, and other issues that can negatively influence the software development process. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that developers have a clear understanding of the codebase and can work efficiently and effectively even after long interruptions. This registered report proposes an empirical study aimed at investigating the impact of the developer's activity breaks duration and different code quality properties. In particular, we aim at understanding if the amount of activity in a project impact the code quality, and if developers with different activity profiles show different impacts on code quality. The results might be useful to understand if it is beneficial to promote the practice of developing multiple projects in parallel, or if it is more beneficial to reduce the number of projects each developer contributes.

MLOps tools enable continuous development of machine learning, following the DevOps process. Different MLOps tools have been presented on the market, however, such a number of tools often create confusion on the most appropriate tool to be used in each DevOps phase. To overcome this issue, we conducted a multivocal literature review mapping 84 MLOps tools identified from 254 Primary Studies, on the DevOps phases, highlighting their purpose, and possible incompatibilities. The result of this work will be helpful to both practitioners and researchers, as a starting point for future investigations on MLOps tools, pipelines, and processes.

The continuous software engineering paradigm is gaining popularity in modern development practices, where the interleaving of design and runtime activities is induced by the continuous evolution of software systems. In this context, performance assessment is not easy, but recent studies have shown that architectural models evolving with the software can support this goal. In this paper, we present a mapping study aimed at classifying existing scientific contributions that deal with the architectural support for performance-targeted continuous software engineering. We have applied the systematic mapping methodology to an initial set of 215 potentially relevant papers and selected 66 primary studies that we have analyzed to characterize and classify the current state of research. This classification helps to focus on the main aspects that are being considered in this domain and, mostly, on the emerging findings and implications for future research

Microservice-based systems are often complex to understand, especially when their sizes grow. Abstracted views help practitioners with the system understanding from a certain perspective. Recent advancement in interactive data visualization begs the question of whether established software engineering models to visualize system design remain the most suited approach for the service-oriented design of microservices. Our recent work proposed presenting a 3D visualization for microservices in augmented reality. This paper analyzes whether such an approach brings any benefits to practitioners when dealing with selected architectural questions related to system design quality. For this purpose, we conducted a controlled experiment involving 20 participants investigating their performance in identifying service dependency, service cardinality, and bottlenecks. Results show that the 3D enables novices to perform as well as experts in the detection of service dependencies, especially in large systems, while no differences are reported for the identification of service cardinality and bottlenecks. We recommend industry and researchers to further investigate AR for microservice architectural analysis, especially to ease the onboarding of new developers in microservice~projects., Comment: The paper (10 pages) is accepted in ICPC 2023

Differentiation of breast tissues is challenging in X-ray imaging because tissues might share similar or even the same linear attenuation coefficients $\mu$. Spectral computed tomography (CT) allows for more quantitative characterization in terms of tissue density and effective atomic number by exploiting the energy dependence of $\mu$. In this work, 5 mastectomy samples and a phantom with inserts mimicking breast soft tissues were evaluated in a retrospective study. The samples were imaged at three monochromatic energy levels in the range of 24 - 38 keV at 5 mGy per scan using a propagation-based phase-contrast setup at SYRMEP beamline at the Italian national synchrotron Elettra. A custom-made algorithm incorporating CT reconstructions of an arbitrary number of spectral energy channels was developed to extract the density and effective atomic number of adipose, fibro-glandular, pure glandular, tumor, and skin from regions selected by a radiologist. Preliminary results suggest that, via spectral CT, it is possible to enhance tissue differentiation. It was found that adipose, fibro-glandular and tumorous tissues have average effective atomic numbers (5.94 $\pm$ 0.09, 7.03 $\pm$ 0.012, and 7.40 $\pm$ 0.10) and densities (0.90 $\pm$ 0.02, 0.96 $\pm$ 0.02, and 1.07 $\pm$ 0.03 g/cm$^{3}$) and can be better distinguished if both quantitative values are observed together., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physics in Medicine and Biology

Context: Gaia DR3 time series data may contain spurious signals related to the time-dependent scan angle. Aims: We aim to explain the origin of scan-angle dependent signals and how they can lead to spurious periods, provide statistics to identify them in the data, and suggest how to deal with them in Gaia DR3 data and in future releases. Methods: Using real Gaia data, alongside numerical and analytical models, we visualise and explain the features observed in the data. Results: We demonstrated with Gaia data that source structure (multiplicity or extendedness) or pollution from close-by bright objects can cause biases in the image parameter determination from which photometric, astrometric and (indirectly) radial velocity time series are derived. These biases are a function of the time-dependent scan direction of the instrument and thus can introduce scan-angle dependent signals, which in turn can result in specific spurious periodic signals. Numerical simulations qualitatively reproduce the general structure observed in the spurious period and spatial distribution of photometry and astrometry. A variety of statistics allows for identification of affected sources. Conclusions: The origin of the scan-angle dependent signals and subsequent spurious periods is well-understood and is in majority caused by fixed-orientation optical pairs with separation <0.5" (amongst which binaries with P>>5y) and (cores of) distant galaxies. Though the majority of sources with affected derived parameters have been filtered out from the Gaia archive, there remain Gaia DR3 data that should be treated with care (e.g. gaia_source was untouched). Gaia DR3 contains 1.8 billion sources with G-band photometry, 1.5 billion of which with BP and RP photometry, complemented by positions on the sky, parallax, and proper motion. The median number of field-of-view transits in the three photometric bands is between 40 and 44 measurements per source and covers 34 months of data collection. We pursue a classification of Galactic and extra-galactic objects that are detected as variable by Gaia across the whole sky. Supervised machine learning (eXtreme Gradient Boosting and Random Forest) was employed to generate multi-class, binary, and meta-classifiers that classified variable objects with photometric time series in the G, BP, and RP bands. Classification results comprise 12.4 million sources (selected from a much larger set of potential variable objects) and include about 9 million variable stars classified into 22 variability types in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies such as the Magellanic Clouds and Andromeda, plus thousands of supernova explosions in distant galaxies, 1 million active galactic nuclei, and almost 2.5 million galaxies. The identification of galaxies was made possible by the artificial variability of extended objects as detected by Gaia, so they were published in the galaxy_candidates table of the Gaia DR3 archive, separate from the classifications of genuine variability (in the vari_classifier_result table). The latter contains 24 variability classes or class groups of periodic and non-periodic variables (pulsating, eclipsing, rotating, eruptive, cataclysmic, stochastic, and microlensing), with amplitudes from a few milli-magnitudes to several magnitudes., Comment: 106 pages, 513 figure panels, 4 tables. We present the first Gaia catalogue of eclipsing binary candidates released in Gaia DR3, describe its content, provide tips for its usage, estimate its quality, and show illustrative samples. The catalogue contains 2,184,477 sources with G magnitudes up to 20 mag. Candidate selection is based on the results of variable object classification performed within the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, further filtered using eclipsing binary-tailored criteria based on the G light curves. To find the orbital period, a large ensemble of trial periods is first acquired using three distinct period search methods applied to the cleaned G light curve. The G light curve is then modelled with up-to two Gaussians and a cosine for each trial period. The best combination of orbital period and geometric model is finally selected using Bayesian model comparison based on the BIC. A global ranking metric is provided to rank the quality of the chosen model between sources. The catalogue is restricted to orbital periods larger than 0.2 days. About 530,000 of the candidates are classified as eclipsing binaries in the literature as well, out of ~600,000 available crossmatches, and 93% of them have published periods compatible with the Gaia periods. Catalogue completeness is estimated to be between 25% and 50%, depending on the sky region, relative to the OGLE4 catalogues of eclipsing binaries towards the Galactic Bulge and the Magellanic Clouds. The analysis of an illustrative sample of ~400,000 candidates with significant parallaxes shows properties in the observational HR diagram as expected for eclipsing binaries. The subsequent analysis of a sub-sample of detached bright candidates provides further hints for the exploitation of the catalogue. A theorem of Nomizu and van Est computes the cohomology of a compact nilmanifold, or equivalently the group cohomology of an arithmetic subgroup of a unipotent linear algebraic group over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove a similar result for the cohomology of a compact open subgroup of a unipotent linear algebraic group over $\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}$ with coefficients in a complex of continuous $\ell$-adic representations. We work with the triangulated categories defined by Ekedahl which play the role of ``derived categories of continuous $\ell$-adic representations''. This is motivated by Pink's formula computing the derived direct image of an $\ell$-adic local system on a Shimura variety in its minimal compactification, and its application to automorphic perverse sheaves on Shimura varieties.
