The article describes how to identify the typewriter ribbon used to write a letter, and present the findings in court. It dwells on a case study that employs new techniques to this end. In some respects the uniqueness of the case helped to bring about the need for and the opportunity to make this kind of examination and demonstration in court. Two letters were actually in dispute, and the technique described established comparable data for both. One was dated July 12, 1957 and the second September 3, 1957. Only the September letter is considered in detail. This technique employed for examining the used typewriter ribbon and relating the impressions to a specific document enabled the examiner to show conclusively that the document had been typewritten on the machine at hand with the ribbon before him. The conclusions were demonstrated photographically. Further, with coordinated field investigation it was possible to establish when the document had been prepared. This combination of evidence brought about the rejection of the disputed document and with other evidence in the case lead to a decision against the entire fraudulent claim.

This article presents abstracts of several research studies on political science. The article A Model Forgery, by D. K. S. Puri characterizes forgery by slow, drawn movements, contains retouchings, pen pauses, pen-lifts, blunt terminals, right down slant, and concave alignment. The Means of Interrogation, by G. H. Hatherill gives a general discussion with suggestions on the proper conduct of an interrogation. Moreover, in the article Procedures for the Systematic Identification of Peaks in Gas-Liquid Chromatographic Analysis by R. C. Crippen and C. E. Smith, in order to determine the exact identity of a compound, suitable derivatives may be prepared and chromatographed. Auxiliary detection systems may also be used. The isolated sample may be collected and examined. In the article Criminal Road Conduct, those persons persons committing serious traffic offences need to be given greater attention. Hazardous driving may be performed by an unusually anti-social group. It is suggested that judges examine non-motoring criminal records at the time of sentencing. The article A Scientific Look at Typewriter Ribbon Inks discusses that thin layer chromatography is recommended for analysis and identification of typewriter ribbon inks.

A scheme is presented which allows for the individual identification of a typewriter ribbon by applying color tests to a few fibers pulled from the surface of typed material. The tests were performed on a very small scale so that the document was not visibly altered. A study made on 10 ribbons showed that each could be identified by the use of two reagents, acetone and ethylene chlorohydrin. Chromatographic and electrophoretic procedures are presented which are useful when actual ribbon is available for study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores all methods of dating typewritten documents. Frequently, it is possible to date a typewritten document through a study of the typewriting; a study combining the typewriting and the physical properties of the document upon which the typewritten material appears; or a study of properties wholly outside the typewriting itself. In rare instances relatively definite dates may be fixed, but in most cases a date will be a rough approximation and most frequently the principal evidence to be derived from such studies is a conclusion that a document was not typewritten until after its purported date. The evidence is negative. Nothing is proven by revelation that a document dated two decades previously was executed on a typewriting machine which existed then, but much is proven by revelation that a document of such date was executed on a typewriting machine which did not exist until a year or so previous to the examination. Though this is true, it is possible in many cases to establish that an older document executed on a typewriting machine which actually existed on its date, could not, in fact, have been written then. It is considered that there could be a few isolated instances where fabric ribbon condition might assist in the solution of a dating problem.
