- Abstract
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to present the Asia-Pacific consensus on long-term and sequential therapy for osteoporosis, offering evidence-based recommendations for the effective management of this chronic condition. The primary focus is on achieving optimal fracture prevention through a comprehensive, individualized approach. METHODS: A panel of experts convened to develop consensus statements by synthesizing the current literature and leveraging clinical expertise. The review encompassed long-term anti-osteoporosis medication goals, first-line treatments for individuals at very high fracture risk, and the strategic integration of anabolic and antiresorptive agents in sequential therapy approaches. RESULTS: The panelists reached a consensus on 12 statements. Key recommendations included advocating for anabolic agents as the first-line treatment for individuals at very high fracture risk and transitioning to antiresorptive agents following the completion of anabolic therapy. Anabolic therapy remains an option for individuals experiencing new fractures or persistent high fracture risk despite antiresorptive treatment. In cases of inadequate response, the consensus recommended considering a switch to more potent medications. The consensus also addressed the management of medication-related complications, proposing alternatives instead of discontinuation of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This consensus provides a comprehensive, cost-effective strategy for fracture prevention with an emphasis on shared decision-making and the incorporation of country-specific case management systems, such as fracture liaison services. It serves as a valuable guide for healthcare professionals in the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to the ongoing evolution of osteoporosis management.

In this work, the geometry and material constraint effects on creep crack growth (CCG) and behavior in welded joints were investigated. The CCG paths and rates of two kinds of specimen geometry (C(T) and M(T)) with initial cracks located at soft HAZ (heat-affected zone with lower creep strength) and different material mismatches were simulated. The effect of constraint on creep crack initiation (CCI) time was discussed. The results show that there exists interaction between geometry and material constraints in terms of their effects on CCG rate and CCI time of welded joints. Under the condition of low geometry constraint, the effect of material constraint on CCG rate and CCI time becomes more obvious. Higher material constraint can promote CCG due to the formation of higher stress triaxiality around crack tip. Higher geometry constraint can increase CCG rate and reduce CCI time of welded joints. Both geometry and material constraints should be considered in creep life assessment and design for high-temperature welded components.

- Abstract
Selective noncatalytic reduction (SNCR) systems have been widely used for denitrification in small capacity boilers, such as biomass- and waste-fueled boilers. However, these systems cannot meet the requirements of ultralow emission regulations, i.e., 50 mg m−3. This work proposes a new solution that combines SNCR and activated carbon (AC). To solve the problem caused by the wettability of AC, which can significantly reduce the quantity of NOx that can be adsorbed and block active cites, hydrophobic modification was employed to amend the properties of AC. The influences of the key operating parameters on the denitrification of AC, including the reaction temperature, O2 concentration, feed gas flow rate, and contents of SO2 and CO2, have been investigated experimentally. A novel solution that combines AC and SNCR was proposed for industrial applications, and the economic feasibility has been verified. The results have demonstrated that this hybrid solution can achieve a low levelized cost of denitrification, which is 59.8% and 33.7% lower than those of SCR and hybrid SNCR/SCR.

- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Trends on glycemic control and diabetes complications are known for high-income countries, but comprehensive data from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are lacking. METHODS: This is an expert opinion based on two retrospective studies. Here we examine the recent subset analysis of relevant data from the IDMPS Wave 7 (International Diabetes Management-Practices Study, 2015-2016) and the GOAL study conducted in multiple LMICs. RESULTS: Wave 7 sub-analysis was performed in 6113 people with type 2 diabetes from 24 LMIC. Poorly controlled diabetes (hemogloblin A1c [HbA1c] ≥ 7%) was found in 58.6, 73.0 and 78.3% of participants with diabetes duration of < 5, 5-12 and > 12 years, respectively (in association with a high prevalence of macro- and microvascular complications). Moreover, 37.7% of participants with diabetes duration of 5-12 years were treated only with oral antihyperglycemic drugs. The GOAL study investigated the efficacy of insulin in 2704 poorly controlled participants (mean HbA1c 9.7%; diabetes duration 10.1 ± 6.7 years; 10 LMIC). A significant 2% reduction in mean HbA1c levels was observed after 12 months of treatment. Only 7.2% of participants experienced a symptomatic episode of hypoglycemia (nocturnal or severe hypoglycemia events were infrequent). CONCLUSION: The rate of well-controlled participants (HbA1c < 7.0%) in the Wave 7 sub-analysis was lower than that observed in the USA (NHANES survey) or in European countries (GUIDANCE study), and the incidence of microvascular complications was higher. The GOAL study showed that insulin treatment improves glycemic control and reduces this gap. The Expert Panel recommends intensifying diabetes treatment as soon as possible, as well as patients' education and other preventive measures, initiatives which require modest costs compared to hospitalization and treatment of diabetes complications.

- Abstract
Current technologies for capturing carbon from flue gas are plagued by high capital, energy and chemical costs, etc. Here, we report a composite supported liquid membrane containing mimic enzyme that may provide a possible solution to these issues. This composite membrane has two highly permeable silicone layers which immobilize the mimic enzyme (Zn-cyclen complex) solution in the pores of a cellulose acetate nanofiltration membrane. The schematic is showed in Fig.1. The membrane couples the selectivity of liquid sorbents and energy-efficiency of membrane separation without absorbent regeneration unit. The prepared Zn-cyclen complex was characterized by1HNMR and dissociation constant (pKa). The contact angles of the cellulose acetate support membrane and the prepared composite membrane were tested. CO2 separation performances of the membranes were studied in a plate-and-frame membrane module system. The membrane system presents a CO2/N2 selectivity of 94 and a CO2 permeance of 1.33 [m3 (STP)/(m2 bar h)] with a very small amount of 0.0052 M mimic enzyme. This composite supported liquid membrane shows the advantages of low cost, simple production procedure and high CO2 separation performance.

- Abstract
In this study, experiments on pretreating one species of microalgae (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) using one kind of ionic liquid (IL) of [BMIM]Cl were conducted. The aim of this work is to evaluate the recycling efficacy of expensive IL solvent for effective cell disruption. It was indicated that the molecular structure of IL was stable during the recycling test. Five times antisolvent precipitation of microalgae debris after lipid extraction using methanol recovered 99.8% IL with the energy consumption of 4.46 MJ per kg dry Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The chromatography was used to separate IL and hydrolysates, resulting in the IL loss below 1.97 g per kg dry Chlorella pyrenoidosa. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

- Abstract
Chlorella vulgais, a kind of micro-alagae, is an attracting feedstock for bioenergy production, such as biodiesel and biogas. But its tough cell wall structure is the main obstacle to efficiently extracting lipids and other biomass. Ionic liquid (IL) can be used to hydrolyze its cell-wall. However, due to its high cost and toxicity, it is important to recover IL as much as possible. Therefore, a method that can accurately measure the content of ILs, is urgently needed. In this work, two common methods that are used to measure the content of ILs: equimolar titration method and ultraviolet absorbance spectra were compared. The results show that equimolar titration method is not available for trace quantity analysis of ionic liquids as the endpoint of titration is hard to be identified at low IL content (<10 mg/L); while UV absorbance spectra method can be used at low IL contents, whereas, it may result in big deviations. To further improve the accuracy of UV absorbance spectra method, concentrating the sample could be a potential solution.

Pipe lines -- Welding ,Welded joints -- Research ,Materials at high temperatures -- Research ,Engineering and manufacturing industries - Abstract
The conventional way to define the weldment creep strength reduction factor is usually based on uniaxial creep data of weld metals and parent metals. In order to take the multiaxial effect into consideration, this paper has defined a structural transfer function which can be evaluated from general creep stress analysis. An analytical model is then proposed in the light of the function. Two numerical examples of typical weld properties show that the transfer function has a load-independent feature, which allows one to obtain multiaxial stress components in a weldment through minimal computation effort. Fairly good estimation of the stress level in the weld metal is achieved. On the basis of the present semi-analytical procedure, the weldment creep strength reduction factors are evaluated. For a 0.5Cr0.5Mo0.25V butt-welded tube under internal pressure, which has a higher weld metal creep-rupture strength, and lower weld metal creep strain rate, the reduction factors range from 0.9 to 0.95. For the AISI 316 butt-welded tube of cold-worked parent metal and creep soft weld metal, lower strength reduction factors are found, but they may still be nonconservative due to stress enhancement in the heat-affected zone.

- Abstract
Background: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists differ in chemical structure, duration of action, and in their effects on clinical outcomes. The cardiovascular effects of once-weekly albiglutide in type 2 diabetes are unknown. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of albiglutide in preventing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Methods: We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 610 sites across 28 countries. We randomly assigned patients aged 40 years and older with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (at a 1:1 ratio) to groups that either received a subcutaneous injection of albiglutide (30–50 mg, based on glycaemic response and tolerability) or of a matched volume of placebo once a week, in addition to their standard care. Investigators used an interactive voice or web response system to obtain treatment assignment, and patients and all study investigators were masked to their treatment allocation. We hypothesised that albiglutide would be non-inferior to placebo for the primary outcome of the first occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. If non-inferiority was confirmed by an upper limit of the 95% CI for a hazard ratio of less than 1·30, closed testing for superiority was prespecified. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02465515. Findings: Patients were screened between July 1, 2015, and Nov 24, 2016. 10 793 patients were screened and 9463 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to groups: 4731 patients were assigned to receive albiglutide and 4732 patients to receive placebo. On Nov 8, 2017, it was determined that 611 primary endpoints and a median follow-up of at least 1·5 years had accrued, and participants returned for a final visit and discontinuation from study treatment; the last patient visit was on March 12, 2018. These 9463 patients, the intention-to-treat population, were

Deflection test has been widely used to estimate residual stresses within an oxide layer during isothermal oxidation of one surface of an alloy or metal. Deflection models so far developed have considered elastic, plastic, and creep model to predict stresses produced from curvature of the metal/oxide interface. However, none of the models have considered growth stress. During oxidation, when new oxide forms along grain boundaries lying perpendicular to the interface, it will generate a lateral growth strain. When this strain is constrained by the underlying metal, it will generate growth stress in the oxide. This lateral growth strain combined with creep strain of the both oxide and metal will then provide the realistic approach to deal with stresses in oxide/metal composite. Considering these situations an analytical model has been developed to determine residual stresses for the metal/oxide composite of the deflection test. The stress value in both metal and oxide is calculated for notional mechanical properties. Moreover, the effects of oxide thickness, oxidation time, lateral growth constant, and the creep constants on stresses are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple cracking of brittle films deposited on the relatively soft substrate was commonly used in different applications. In the present paper, multiple film cracking in the film/substrate systems was analyzed. The system was subjected to the combination of the residual stresses due to the mismatch strain between the film and substrate and the applied stress due to the unidirectional strain on the substrate. First, a simply analytical model was developed to derive the closed-form solutions for the residual stress distribution and redistribution due to the edge effects in the film segment. Second, the energy and strength criteria were adopted to perform the analysis on the multiple film cracking on the basis of the knowledge on the residual stress distributions. Third, the case of SiO
x film/polyethylene terephthalate substrate system was used to illustrate the implementation of this model. The relationship between the fracture energy as well as the film strength and the film thickness was obtained. The predicted crack density against the applied strain was compared with the existing experimental measurements. The effect of the mismatch strain on the crack density of the film was also discussed. The multiple cracks might be initiated in the film on a substrate due to the presence of residual stress. In this paper, the multiple film cracking in the film/substrate systems with residual stress was analyzed. First, a relatively simplified model with the closed solutions considering the edge effect was developed to predict the residual stress within the film segment. Some obvious relationships between the material properties and the dimensions of the film and substrate and the stress distribution in the film could be reflected by using this model. By comparing the analytical results with those from the existing analytical models, finite element analysis, and the existing experimental measurements, it could be concluded that the present analytical model was very rigorous. Then, the energy criterion was adopted to perform the analysis on multiple film cracking on the basis of the knowledge on the residual stress distributions. The closed-form solution for the critical misfit strain for the crack initiation is obtained. When the misfit strain is higher than critical misfit strain, the effects of the thickness and elastic modulus of the film on the crack density in the film and the crack initiation strain were investigated. - Abstract
Room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) have recently been proposed as a potential candidate for CO2 capture. In this study, experiments were conducted in an absorption-desorption loop system to investigate the effects of SO2 and O2 on CO2 capture using an aqueous amine solution mixed with IL. The gas mixture containing CO2, O2, SO2 and N2 in the composition range of flue gas from a coal-fired power plant after flue gas desulfurization was selected as the feed gas. It was found that the addition of hydrophilic IL of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]) to a monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous solution reduced the losses of MEA and water by lowering the saturated vapour pressure of the mixed absorbent. For hydrophobic IL of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([hmim][Tf2N]), the MEA loss for 30 wt% MEA + 70 wt% [hmim][Tf2N] increased dramatically with the system running because carbonate, which was formed by MEA reacting with CO2, was insoluble in [hmim][Tf2N] at the absorber operation temperature of 323 K. The effects of O2 and SO2 were relatively insignificant for the MEA and water losses. The aqueous amine solution mixed with [bmim][BF4] showed good performances with a CO2 removal efficiency of above 90% and the SO2 concentration at the absorber outlet below 20 ppb. No obvious IL loss was detected. For the absorbent of 30 wt% MEA + 50 wt% [bmim][BF4] + 20 wt% H2O, the thermal energy consumption for absorbent regeneration is 33.8% lower than that of the aqueous MEA solution., QC 20170609

- Abstract
The recent advances in waste heat recovery technologies have provided great opportunities for energy conversion efficiency improvement. This paper proposed a metal foam filled thermoelectric generator (TEG) for the utilization of liquid waste heat resource. A prototype was designed and constructed to study the performance enhancement due to metal foam inserts. High-temperature oil based experiment was conducted to investigate the TEG performance in higher liquid temperature. The influences of hot oil inlet temperature and cold water flow rate were proved to be key operating parameters for the TEG performance. Specially, net power output and net power enhancement ratio were presented to assess the overall net power output performance. The metal foam filled TEG was demonstrated to outperform the unfilled TEG both in power generation efficiency and net power performance. In the experiments, the maximum power generation efficiency and net power enhancement ratio of metal foam inserted TEG were 2.49% and 1.33, respectively., QC 20170629
