Abstract

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has not only become ubiquitous in daily life but has also emerged as a pivotal technology across various sectors, including smart factories and smart cities. Consequently, there is a pressing need to ensure the consistent and uninterrupted delivery of IoT services. Conformance testing has thus become an integral aspect of IoT technologies. However, traditional methods of IoT conformance testing fall short of addressing the evolving requirements put forth by both industry and academia. Historically, IoT testing has necessitated a visit to a testing laboratory, implying that both the testing systems and testers must be co-located. Furthermore, there is a notable absence of a comprehensive method for testing an array of IoT standards, especially given their inherent heterogeneity. With a surge in the development of diverse IoT standards, crafting an appropriate testing environment poses challenges. To address these concerns, this article introduces a method for remote IoT conformance testing, underpinned by a novel conceptual architecture termed CLOCIS. This architecture encompasses an extensible approach tailored for a myriad of IoT standards. Moreover, we elucidate the methods and procedures integral to testing IoT devices. CLOCIS, predicated on this conceptual framework, is actualized, and to attest to its viability, we undertake IoT conformance testing and present the results. When leveraging CLOCIS, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entities in the throes of IoT service development stand to benefit from a reduced time to market and cost-efficient testing procedures. 5. Framework for automated functional tests within value-added service environments

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed that standard telecommunication services evolved more and more to next generation value-added services. This fact is accompanied by a change of service characteristics as new services are designed to fulfil the customer’s demands instead of just focussing on technologies and protocols. These demands can be very specific and, therefore, diverse potential service functionalities have to be considered by the service providers. To make matters worse for service providers, a fast transition from concept to market product and low price of a new service is required due to the increasing competition in the telecommunication industry. Therefore, effective test solutions need to be developed that can be integrated in current value-added service development life-cycles. Besides, these solutions should support the involvement of all participating stakeholders such as the service provider, the test developers as well as the service developers, and, in order to consider an agile approach, also the service customer. This thesis proposes a novel framework for functional testing that is based on a new sort of description language for value-added services (Service Test Description). Based on instances of the Service Test Description, sets of reusable test components described by means of an applied Statecharts notation are automatically selected and composed to so-called behaviour models. From the behaviour models, abstract test cases can be automatically generated which are then transformed to TTCN-3 test cases and then assembled to an Executable Test Suite. Within a TTCN-3 test system, the Executable Test Suite can be executed against the corresponding value-added service referred to as System Under Test. One benefit of the proposed framework is its application within standard development life-cycles. Therefore, the thesis presents a methodology that considers both service development and test development as parallel tasks and foresees procedures to synchronise the tasks and to allow an agile approach with customer involvement. The novel framework is validated through a proof-of-concept working prototype. Example value-added services have been chosen to illustrate the whole process from compiling instances of the Service Test Description until the execution of automated tests. Overall, this thesis presents a novel solution for service providers to improve the quality of their provided value-added services through automated functional testing procedures. It enables the early involvement of the customers into the service development life-cycle and also helps test developers and service developers to collaborate.

The system observed is used in the industry as a test tool for complex telecommunication systems, itself consisting of more than one million lines of source code. This study evaluates how different changes during the development have changed the number of observed Code Smells in the test system. We have monitored the development of the test scripts and measured the code quality characteristics over a five years period.

Abstract

Testing embedded systems software has become a costly activity as these systems become more complex to fulfill rising needs. Testing processes should be both effective and affordable. An ideal testing process should begin with validated requirements and begin as early as possible so that requirements defects can be fixed before they propagate and become more difficult to address. Furthermore, the testing process should facilitate test procedures creation and automate their execution. We propose a novel methodology for testing functional requirements. The methodology activities include standard notations, such as UCM for modeling scenarios derived from requirements, TDL for describing test cases and TTCN-3 for executing test procedures; other test scripting languages can also be used with our methodology. Furthermore, the automation of the methodology generates test artifacts through model transformation. The main goals of this test methodology are to leverage requirements represented as scenarios, to replace the natural language test case descriptions with test scenarios in TDL, and to generate executable test procedures. Demonstration of the feasibility of the proposed approach is based on a public case study. An empirical evaluation of our approach is given using a case study from the avionics domain. Abstract

This paper rejuvenates the notion of conformance testing in order to assess the security of networks. It leverages the Testing and Test Control Notation Version 3 (TTCN-3) by applying it to a redefined notion of System under Test (SUT). Instead of testing, as it is classically done, a software/firmware/ hardware element, an intangible object, namely the network, is tested in order to infer some of its security properties. After a brief introduction of TTCN-3 and Titan, its compilation and execution environment, a couple of use cases are provided to illustrate the feasibility of the approach. The pros and cons of using TTCN-3 to implement a scalable and flexible network testing environment are discussed.

Usage-based testing focuses quality assurance on highly used parts of the software. The basis for this are usage profiles based on which test cases are generated. There are two fundamental approaches in usage-based testing for deriving usage profiles: either the system under test (SUT) is observed during its operation and from the obtained usage data a usage profile is automatically inferred, or a usage profile is modeled by hand within a model-based testing (MBT) approach. In this article, we propose a third and combined approach, where we automatically infer a usage profile and create a test data repository from usage data. Then, we create representations of the generated tests and test data in the test model from an MBT approach. The test model enables us to generate executable Testing and Test Control Notation version 3 (TTCN-3) and thereby allows us to automate the test execution. Together with industrial partners, we adopted this approach in two pilot studies. Our findings show that usage-based testing can be applied in practice and greatly helps with the automation of tests. Abstract

The quality of Web services is an important factor for businesses that advertise or sell their services in the Internet. Failures can directly lead to fewer costumers or security problems. However, the testing of complex Web services that are organized in service-oriented architectures is a difficult and complex problem. Model-based testing (MBT) is one solution to deal with the complexity of the testing. With MBT, testers do not define the tests directly, but rather specify the structure and behavior of the System Under Test using models. Then, a test strategy is used to derive test cases automatically from the models. However, MBT yields a large amount of tests for complex systems which require lots of resources for their execution, thereby limiting its potential. Within this article, we discuss how cloud computing can be used to provide the required resources for scaling up test campaigns with large amounts of test cases derived using MBT. Abstract

This paper examines how ISO/IEC 9126-1 and ISO/IEC 25010 quality models can be applied to software testing products in industrial environment. We present a set of code smells for test systems written in TTCN-3 and their categorization according to quality model standards. We demonstrate our measurements on industrial and ETSI projects, and provide a method for estimating their effects on product risks in current projects.

Abstract

In order to verify the protocol conformance of radio resource management（RRM）cell reselection in TD-LTE system，a new testing method was designed by implementing testing and test control notation version 3 （TTCN-3）abstract test suit.Furthermore，the test suit was operated on the TTworkbench developed by German Testing Tech.The graphical presentation format（GFT）and test report to check the protocol conformance of cell reselection were generated.The scheme has been successfully applied in the project development of TTCN extended testing set instrument（RRM part）in TD-LTE system.
