This research studies the impact of articles appearing in the top four journals for consumer research— JCR , JMR , JM , and JCP— by examining factors that influence scholarly, public, and practical impact. This conceptually distinguishes between "incongruent novelty" (novelty arising from incongruity between an article and other existing articles) and "recombinant novelty" (novelty based on drawing from more disparate references). Incongruent novelty is decomposed into two components: (1) topic incongruity—incongruity between an article's topic and other existing topics at the time and (2) article incongruity—incongruity between an article and other existing articles on the same primary topic. By integrating topic modeling and word embedding to measure these constructs, we demonstrate varying impacts of types of novelty on three types of impact. Overall, our findings illustrate that topic and article incongruity have effects above and beyond recombinant novelty. For both scholarly and public impact, our results suggest that moderately high topic incongruity has the largest influence, suggesting that researchers should address novel topics. Additionally, scholarly citations are positively affected by lower and higher (vs. moderate) levels of article incongruity, suggesting that researchers either engage in programmatic research or add a new approach to the existing research on a topic. Only a minority of Americans adequately engage in activities experts recommend to curb preventable diseases, such as the consumption of healthful foods and regular physical exercise. This poses a challenge for policy makers and social marketers alike, given the substantial impact descriptive norms have on behaviors in the health domain. The authors propose a new way to address this challenge by identifying what they call the "uptrend effect." This effect encourages descriptively nonnormative, healthy behaviors through uptrend messaging that makes salient actual increased engagement in those behaviors over time without referencing an objective descriptive norm. Across seven experimental studies, including studies conducted in the field and measuring real behaviors, this research demonstrates that uptrend messaging leads recipients to infer greater descriptive normativity for the target behavior, which subsequently improves engagement. The authors identify theoretically and practically relevant boundary conditions, showing that the uptrend effect is attenuated when the growth in a behavior is driven by a dissimilar group or when the message explicitly states a descriptive norm. They also demonstrate that uptrend messaging outperforms other norm-based approaches. The theory and findings of this research inform scholars, policy makers, and marketers by providing actionable and easy-to-implement techniques to encourage behaviors that improve consumer quality of life. BACKGROUND: Primary thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis is one of the most common conditions encountered by hand surgeons. Of the vast number of operations that have been proposed, none have demonstrated results significantly superior to trapeziectomy alone. AIM: The purpose of our study was to determine why surgeons opt for their technique in treating CMC arthritis. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of active members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand was conducted to evaluate the reasons behind their preferred technique in the treatment of isolated thumb CMC arthritis. Surgeons were contacted by e-mail once and provided with a link to a de-identified survey consisting of 5 treatment questions and 5 demographic questions. RESULTS: Of 950 responses were received. 40.5% of surgeons preferred trapeziectomy + ligament reconstruction tendon interposition (LRTI), followed by trapeziectomy + suspensionplasty (28.2%), suture button suspension (5.9 %), trapeziectomy alone (4.6%), prosthetic arthroplasty (3.2%), arthrodesis (1.1%), and other (6.6%). Proponents of trapeziectomy + LRTI cited familiarity (73.2%), exposure during fellowship (48.8%) and less proximal migration (60%) to be the main reasons affecting their decision. Surgeons who preferred trapeziectomy + suspensionplasty most reported simplicity (74.9%), fewer complications (45.3%), less proximal migration (43.8%), and avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest (42.7%). Advocates of suture button suspension cited avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest (80.4%), shorter immobilization (76.8%), and quicker recovery (73.2%) with their technique. Advocates of trapeziectomy alone cited simplicity (97.7%), fewer complications (86.4%), and avoidance of autogenous tissue harvest (59.1%). In their comments, 45% of surgeons choosing trapeziectomy alone cited evidence as an additional rationale. Advocates of prosthetic arthroplasty cited improved pinch strength (83.3%) and improved range of motion (63.3%), while those preferring arthrodesis cited better pinch strength (90%) and frequently in their comments, durability. Of the surgeons who preferred a technique other than LRTI, 41.8% reported they had tried LRTI in the past, citing complexity of the procedure, flexor carpi radialis harvest, and longer operative time as reasons for moving on. CONCLUSION: Our study provides an update on current treatment trends and offers new insight into the reasons behind surgeons decision making in the management of thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. Despite strong Level 1 evidence supporting the use of trapeziectomy alone, our findings demonstrate that most surgeons continue to supplement trapeziectomy with other techniques such as LRTI or suspensionplasty. Several factors including familiarity, personal experience (Level 4 evidence), and comfort may be more influential than Level 1 evidence in determining the techniques in a surgeons armamentarium. Further prospective studies are needed to determine the optimal technique for surgical management of Eaton stages II-IV CMC arthritis and how these studies will affect surgeons choice.

BACKGROUND: With the growing opioid epidemic across the US, in-hospital utilization of opioids has garnered increasing attention. Using a national cohort, this study sought to characterize trends, outcomes, and factors associated with in-hospital opioid overdose (OD) following major elective operations. METHODS: We identified all adult (≥18 years) hospitalizations entailing select elective procedures in the 2016-2020 National Inpatient Sample. Patients who experienced in-hospital opioid overdose were characterized as OD (others: Non-OD). The primary outcome of interest was in-hospital OD. Multivariable logistic and linear regression models were developed to evaluate the association between in-hospital OD and mortality, length of stay (LOS), hospitalization costs, and non-home discharge. INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can lead to cardiovascular complications. We aimed to understand the trends in admission for COVID-19 and the incidence of various cardiovascular events. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 2020 and 2021 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) was studied for cases of COVID-19 between April 2020 and December 2021 in the United States. Linear-by-linear association helped us understand the trends of various events. RESULTS: The number of cases of COVID-19 was highest in January 2021 (261,469 patients). The incidence of acute pulmonary embolism rose from 2.08% in April 2020 to 4.82% in November 2021, while deep vein thrombosis cases rose from 1.74% in April 2020 to 2.63% in December 2021. The incidence of cardiac arrest varied, with a maximum of 3.00% in August 2021. Similarly, acute ischemic stroke cases experienced their highest incidence in January 2021 (0.91%). The incidence of myocarditis was highest in April and May 2020 (0.42% each). Peak takotsubo cases were seen between October and December 2021. The highest overall all-cause mortality among COVID-19 cases was seen in April 2020 (16.74%). CONCLUSIONS: Throughout the 21 months of our analysis, various trends in COVID-19 cases and incidence of cardiac events were noticed. This could relate to the different variants of COVID-19, their direct and indirect impact on coagulation pathways and the myocardial tissues, and the protective roles of the vaccines.

Extreme rainfall events (EREs) caused by convection are a major prediction challenge and can lead to deadly flash flooding. This study investigates EREs from 2003 to 2023 over the central and eastern United States using high‐resolution (4‐km) Stage IV precipitation analyses. EREs were defined where 12‐hr accumulations exceeded the 10‐year average recurrence interval thresholds. Summertime (June–August) EREs exhibited pronounced interannual variability, but with statistically significant increasing trends in annual frequency, particularly among those caused by mesoscale convective systems. Significant relationships were also found between summertime convective EREs over the central United States and enhanced poleward moisture transport, consistent with a westward expansion of the climatological North Atlantic Subtropical High. This relationship may aid in medium‐ and long‐range forecasting. However, the spatial scale of EREs often included localized or narrow bands of extreme accumulations, revealing significant challenges in the accurate representation of EREs in weather and climate models. Plain Language Summary: Extreme rainfall events often result from slow‐moving thunderstorms that drop heavy rain over the same area for several hours, which can cause deadly flash flooding. This study defines an extreme rainfall event where the 12‐hr accumulation would only exceed that amount once every 10 years on average, with a focus on the summer months over the central and eastern United States from 2003 to 2023. Our results show a significant increasing trend in the number of extreme events, especially those caused by larger, longer‐duration storms. Our use of a high‐resolution rainfall data set also revealed that extreme rainfall often occurs due to nighttime thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall over highly localized areas or narrow (20–40 km wide) swaths. These characteristics present a challenge for global weather and climate models. The frequency of these summertime extreme events also significantly varied from year to year. Summers with more extreme events were associated with a greater northward transport of moist air around the western edge of an area of high pressure that extends westward from the Atlantic Ocean. The relationship between this flow pattern and extreme rainfall suggests a possible path for improving forecasts of extreme rainfall. Observed precipitation changes in the Southeast United States (SEUS) are spatially heterogeneous. Most of the inland SEUS and eastern Gulf Coast become drier, and the East Coast north of Charleston, South Carolina, and southern Florida become wetter from the old 30-yr period of 1961–90 to the recent period of 1991–2020. The observed climate change is examined from the perspective of daily weather types (WTs). A k-means clustering analysis has been conducted using daily 850-hPa circulation for 1948–2021. The obtained 10 WTs peak in different seasons, respectively. The frequencies and precipitation intensity of the WTs have been analyzed. A winter WT characterized by a western Appalachian trough (WAT) and a summer WT featuring North Atlantic subtropical high (NASH) have a rising trend of annual frequency from 1948 to 2021. An Appalachian high in the autumn has a decreasing frequency but becomes drier and stronger. Some precipitation intensity change and small location shift have also been observed. The drying up on the eastern Gulf Coast and the inland area of the SEUS is mainly caused by the weakened southwesterly low-level jet (LLJ) on the western flank of the NASH that reduces rain in the spring, the less frequent but stronger and drier Appalachian high in the summer and autumn, and the weaker and more western located Plains trough (PT) in the winter, spring, and autumn. The precipitation increase in the East Coast and southern Florida is majorly due to more frequent, stronger, and rainier troughs along the western Appalachian as well as the East Coast. Aims Method Results Conclusion Anal cancer, despite its rarity, is a matter of serious concern in the United States, with an uptrend in recent years and marked racial disparities in mortality rates. The aim of this work was to investigate anal cancer mortality trends and sex race disparities in the United States from 1999 to 2020.This is a retrospective study using data from the CDC WONDER database (1999–2020). We investigated deaths attributed to anal cancer, identified by the ICD‐10 code C21.1, and excluded individuals aged 14 years and under. The Mann–Kendall trend test was used to investigate temporal trends and a t‐test was used to compare continuous variables.Both male and female age‐adjusted mortality attributed to anal cancer increased significantly during the study period across all subgroups, including race (Black and White), US Census region (Northeast, Midwest, South and West) and age (15–64 and ≥65 years) (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). For each subgroup, women demonstrated significantly higher rates of mortality than men, except in the Black population, where Black men had higher rates than Black women (0.40 vs. 0.29, p < 0.001). Additionally, Black men had significantly higher mean mortality rates than White men (0.40 vs. 0.27, p < 0.001). The highest rates of anal cancer mortality were among geriatric individuals, especially women aged ≥65 years, at 1.18 per 100 000.The rise in anal cancer mortality and racial and sex disparities present a significant challenge for healthcare providers and policy makers. Elevation‐dependent warming (EDW) has been a topic of intense debate due to limited observed data in global highland areas. This study aims to fill this gap by utilizing CRU and ERA5 datasets from 1981 to 2021 to explore the trends of climate change and its elevation dependency. The anomalies of temperature indicators (Tmean, Tmax, and Tmin) in both ERA5 and CRU showed significant warming trends over global highlands. Moreover, the response of temperature indicators to elevation across global highlands is not spatially uniform. The linear regression model based on the elevation showed significant warming signals for the temperature indicators at various elevations over the global highlands. On a regional scale, Tmean and Tmax predominantly showed linear EDW over EU highlands, while Tmean in Asian highlands exhibited EDW signals at 4–5 km. Tmin showed EDW at 2.5–5.5 km with ERA5 and 3–5 km with CRU. In the Andes, EDW was prominent at 2.5–4 km. Overall, EDW signals are evident in all studied regions but vary across them. While assessing the driving factors, the results of this study indicate that total column water vapour (TCWV), snow depth (SD), snow albedo, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) correlated positively with the temperature indicators. These findings emphasize the significance of elevation‐specific interactions between environmental factors and temperature in forecasting temperature changes in mountainous areas. Additionally, temperature exhibited coherence with teleconnection indices from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Asian and European (EU) highlands exhibited interzonal coherence with the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, while North American (NA) highlands showed coherence, followed by South American (SA) highlands. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of EDW and its implications for highland regions globally, including the potential for more severe depletion of snow/ice resources in a warmer future. AbstractAimMethodsResultsConclusionsGuillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune neurological disorder, with an estimated 6.4% increase in cases worldwide from 1990 to 2019. We aim to identify the GBS-related mortality trends in the US stratified by age, sex, race, and region.We used data from the CDC-WONDER database to calculate crude (CMR) and age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 1,000,000 people. We examined the temporal trends through annual percent change (APC) and the average annual percent change (AAPC) in rates using Joinpoint regression.From 1999 to 2020, a total of 10,097 GBS-related deaths occurred in the US. The AAMR decreased till 2014 (APC: −1.91) but increased back to initial levels by 2020 (APC: 3.77). AAMR was higher in males (1.7) than females (1.1), decreasing till 2015 for females and 2014 for males, but increasing thereafter only for females. Non-Hispanic (NH) American Indians or Alaska Natives displayed the highest AAMR (1.8) while NH Asians or Pacific Islanders displayed the lowest (0.6). AAMRs also varied by region (West: 1.5; South: 1.5; Midwest: 1.4; Northeast: 1.1). Rural regions exhibited a higher AAMR (1.7) than urban regions (1.3). Most deaths occurred in medical facilities (60.99%). The adults aged ≥85 years exhibited an alarmingly high CMR (14.0).While the mortality rates for GBS initially declined till 2014, they climbed back up afterwards. Highest mortality was exhibited by males and NH American Indians or Alaska Natives, residents of rural regions, and adults ≥85 years. Introduction Methods Results Conclusions Bipolar disorder (BD) hospitalization rates in children and adolescents vary greatly across place and over time. There are no population‐based studies on youth BD hospitalizations in Spain.We identified all patients aged 10–19 hospitalized due to BD in Spain between 2000 and 2021, examined their demographic and clinical characteristics, and assessed temporal trends in hospitalizations – overall and stratified by age and presence of additional psychiatric comorbidity. We used Joinpoint regressions to identify inflection points and quantify whole‐period and annual percentage changes (APCs) in trends.Of 4770 BD hospitalizations in 10–19‐year‐olds between 2000 and 2021 (average annual rate: 4.8 per 100,000), over half indicated an additional psychiatric comorbidity, most frequently substance abuse (62.2%), mostly due to cannabis (72.4%). During the study period, admissions increased twofold with an inflection point: Rates increased annually only between 2000 and 2008, for APCs 34.0% (95% confidence interval: 20.0%, 71.1%) among 10–14‐year‐olds, 10.3% (6.4%, 14.3%) among 15–19‐year‐olds, and 15.5% (11.5%, 22.7%) among patients with additional psychiatric comorbidity. Between 2009 and 2021, rates decreased moderately among 10–14‐year‐olds – APC: −8.3% (−14.1%, −4.4%) and slightly among 15–19‐year‐olds without additional psychiatric comorbidity – APC: −2.6(−5.7, −1.0), remaining largely stable among 15–19‐year‐olds overall.Recent trends in hospitalization due to BD in 10–19‐year‐olds in Spain indicate salient increases in the early 2000s – especially among (i) patients aged 10–14 (decreasing moderately after 2009 among 10–14‐year‐olds and plateauing among 15–19‐year‐olds) and (ii) patients with additional psychiatric comorbidity (i.e., cannabis use disorder). Objectives: The aim of this research is to discuss the research status, hotspots, frontiers, and development trends in the field of small bowel adenocarcinoma based on bibliometrics and visual analysis by CiteSpace software. Methods: The relevant research articles on SBA from 1923 to 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. CiteSpace software was used to form a visual knowledge map and conduct analysis for the countries/regions, journals, authors, keywords, clusters, research hotspots and frontiers of the included articles. Results: There were 921 articles included, and the number of articles published during 1923-2023 is increasing. The country with the highest number of articles published was the United States (443, 38.76%), followed by Japan (84, 9.12%) and France (72, 7.82%). The author with the highest number of publications is Ansell, Overman MJ (33, 3.58%), and the author with the highest co-citation frequency is Overman MJ (218). Journal of Clinical Oncology is the journal with the highest publication frequency. The top five cluster groups were "chemotherapy", "inflammatory bowel disease", "celiac disease", "tumor" and "small intestine". The related disease, chemotherapy drugs, and treatment regimens of SBA form the main research fields, and prognosis and diagnosis are the research hotspots and trends. Conclusion: The global research field in SBA has expanded in the past 100 years. The prognosis and new diagnosis of SBA are hotspots in this field and require further study in the future. Introduction: Between 2006 and 2017, antenatal care (ANC) coverage in Benin declined, potentially exacerbating inequalities and substantiating the need for health inequality monitoring. This study examines inequalities in ANC attendance in Benin, disaggregated by women's age, educational level, economic status, place of residence, region of residence, and the extent to which they have changed over time. Methods: Three rounds of the Benin Demographic and Health Surveys (2006, 2011–12, and 2017–18) were analyzed to examine inequalities in ANC coverage. An exploratory descriptive approach was adopted for the analysis. Simple [difference (D) and ratio (R)] and complex [population attributable risk (PAR) and population attributable fraction (PAF)] measures of inequalities were computed using the World Health Organization's Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (WHO's HEAT) online platform. The measures were computed separately for each of the three surveys, and their estimates were compared. Results: The findings revealed an 8.4% decline in at least four ANC visits between 2006 and 2017–18. The decline occurred irrespective of age, educational status, economic status, place of residence, and region. Region-related inequalities were the largest and increased slightly between 2006 (D = 54.6; R = 2.6; PAF = 47.8, PAR = 29.0) and 2017–18 (D = 55.8; R = 3.1; PAF = 57.2, PAR = 29.8). Education (2006: D = 31.3, R = 1.6, PAF = 40.5, PAR = 24.5; 2017–18: D = 25.2, R = 1.6, PAF = 34.9, PAR = 18.1) and rural-urban (2006: D = 16.8, R = 1.3, PAF = 17.8, PAR = 10.8; 2017–18: D = 11.2, R = 1.2, PAF = 13.1, PAR = 6.8) inequalities reduced while economic status inequalities did not improve (2006: D = 48, R = 2.2, PAF = 44.5, PAR = 26.9; 2017–18: D = 43.9, R = 2.4, PAF = 45.0, PAR = 23.4). Age inequalities were very minimal. Conclusion: ANC inequalities remain deeply ingrained in Benin. We measured age, period and birth cohort trends in HED in Canada by sex/gender and socioeconomic position.Design and setting.We analyzed repeat cross‐sectional data from the 10 provinces in the Canadian Community Health Surveys from 2000 to 2021 using hierarchical cross‐classified random effects logistic regression.1 167 831 respondents aged 12+ .HED was defined as 4+ standard drinks for women or 5+ for men at least monthly in the past 12 months. Socioeconomic position was measured using household income and education.We observed steeper HED decreases in young adult men (aged 18–29) than women (by 14.4% and 8.7%, respectively, from 2015 to 2021) and HED increases in middle adult women (ages 50–64) (by 8.0% from 2000 to 2014). Sex/gender‐specific age‐period‐cohort models revealed strong age and birth cohort effects. In women and men, respectively, HED peaked in young adulthood (18.2% and 33.8%) and decreased with age, and HED was greatest in the 1980–1989 cohort (20.7% and 35.8%) and decreased in the most recent cohort born in 1990–2009 (15.6% and 19.8%), particularly in men. Higher household incomes had greater HED across age, periods and cohorts, while trends varied by education. Compared with lower education groups, people with a bachelor's degree or above had the lowest HED in middle adulthood. People with a bachelor's degree or above had low HED in earlier cohorts, which converged with other education groups in recent cohorts due to a pronounced HED increase, particularly in women.The sex/gender gap in heavy episodic drinking (HED) appears to be converging in Canada: current young adult men are reducing HED, while high‐risk cohorts of women are aging into middle adulthood with greater HED. Agriculture in Ethiopia is highly dictated by spatial patterns and temporal distributions of climate variables. The analysis of these climate variables is crucial for understanding the impacts on agricultural productivity. This study aimed to analyze spatiotemporal variability and trends of intra-seasonal rainfall and temperature using site-specific daily data from the Ethiopian Meteorology Institute (1992–2021). Standardized methods explore variability, while Mann–Kendall tests identify trends, using the Modified version for data with autocorrelation. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was employed for spatial analysis of rainfall, length of growing season, and temperature. The findings identified that Kiremt dominated the mono-modal rainfall pattern, contributing 72%-86% of total annual rainfall. The study found that the season typically begins early on June 13 in Adiszemen, and July 6 in Arbgebiya and ends between October 6 and October 26. The duration of the season varied across locations, averaging 95 days at Ebenat and 148 days at Adiszemen. The seasonal rainfall anomaly index shows identical patterns between ENSO episodes and seasonal rainfall. These findings inform decision-making and adaptation strategies for ENSO-driven rainfall variability. Temperatures showed predictable seasonal patterns, but have significantly increased over time, with maximum and minimum temperatures rising 0.014 °C to 0.421 °C and 0.027 °C to 0.485 °C per year respectively. This warming trend is negatively impacting water, crops, and livestock, requiring adaptation measures to build regional resilience. This study underscores the critical impact of climate variability on agriculture in the study area. Introduction : This study presents a comprehensive analysis of wrong-way driving (WWD) fatal crashes on divided highways in the United States over a 17-year period, from 2004 to 2020. The study aims to uncover trends, distribution patterns, and factors contributing to these fatal crashes. Data were extracted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) database. Methods : Descriptive statistical analysis was used to reveal general crash characteristics, while trends were updated through an examination of the annual occurrence of WWD fatal crashes. The study further employed binomial logistic regression to compute odds ratios, identifying significant contributing factors. These factors encompassed temporal variables, crash characteristics, and driver characteristics. The odds ratios shed light on the relationship between WWD fatal crashes and other fatal crashes, allowing for the identification of key elements that drive WWD incidents. Results : On average, 302 WWD fatal crashes occurred annually, resulting in 6,953 fatalities during the study period. The frequency of WWD fatal crashes remained relatively stable, with a slight increase over time. According to the model, variables include day of week, time of day, month, lighting conditions, weather conditions, roadway profile, collision type, passenger presence, driver age, gender, license status, and driver injury severity were found to significantly impact the occurrence of WWD fatal crashes. One significant finding is that road profiles like sag curves or hillcrests can increase the likelihood of WWD fatal crashes. Practical Application : The findings of this study contribute to an improved understanding of WWD fatal crashes on divided highways, thereby aiding in the development of strategies for prevention and mitigation. Background: India is a vast and diverse country with existing variations in the frequency and distribution of cancers across its various parts. In regions lacking population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) in a vast country like India, hospital-based cancer registry (HBCR) data become an important source of information on the trends and patterns of a region. To determine the numerical trends of cases of the top ten cancer sites reporting to HBCR of a tertiary care cancer center in Bihar from 2014 to 2021. Materials and Methods: The details of all histopathologically confirmed cancer cases registered in the HBCR department of radiation oncology, State Cancer Institute, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna, India between January 2014 and December 2021 were included in this retrospective observational study. All these cases were grouped site-wise and listed in descending order of the total number of cases reported in each group. Cross-tabulation with age and sex distribution was done. The frequency distribution of the top ten leading cancers for every consecutive calendar year was plotted in line diagrams for time trend analysis. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). was used for analysis. Annual percent change (APC) was determined for the number of cases of all ten cancer sites using joinpoint regression analysis (Joinpoint Regression Software, Version 4.0.4--May 2013; Statistical Methodology and Applications Branch, Surveillance Research Program of the US National Cancer Institute; Bethesda, MD, USA). Results: Out of 32,057 total cancer cases registered between Jan 2014 and Dec 2021, 21,848 patients (68.2%) cases constituted the top ten cancers. The top ten cancers among both sexes were cancer gallbladder (n = 4204, 13.1%), head and neck (n = 3395, 10.6%), breast (n = 3392, 10.6%), lung (n = 2069, 6.5%), cervix (n = 2039, 6.4%), hematolymphoid (n = 1930, 6.0%), liver (n = 1572, 4.9%), stomach (n = 1116, 3.5%), ovary (n = 1103, 3.4%), and colon-rectum (n = 1028, 3.2%). Except for cervical and hematolymphoid cancers, the rest all showed a rising trend over consecutive years. Conclusion: Cancer of the gallbladder continues to be among the most common cancers in the region. Focused research in all aspects of this deadly disease is needed. Strengthening of prevention and screening programs for common cancers and upliftment of the existing infrastructure for diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the region are necessitated. This study aimed to assess the burden of early-onset gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in China over three decades. A comprehensive analysis was performed using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Data on early-onset GI cancers in 2020 and from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from GLOBOCAN 2020 database and GBD 2019, respectively. The average annual percent change (AAPC) was calculated to analyze the temporal trends using the Joinpoint Regression Program. The Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model was used to predict future trends up to 2030. In China, there were 185,980 incident cases and 119,116 deaths of early-onset GI cancer in 2020, with the highest incidence and mortality observed in liver cancer (new cases: 71,662; deaths: 62,412). The spectrum of early-onset GI cancers in China has transitioned over the last 30 years. The age-standardized rates of incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years for colorectal and pancreatic cancers exhibited rapid increases (AAPC >0, P ≤ 0.001). The fastest-growing incidence rate was found in colorectal cancer (AAPC: 3.06, P < 0.001). Despite the decreases in liver, gastric, and esophageal cancers, these trends have been reversed or flattened in recent years. High body mass index was found to be the fastest-growing risk factor for early-onset GI cancers (estimated annual percentage change: 2.75–4.19, P < 0.05). Projection analyses showed an increasing trend in age-standardized incidence rates for almost all early-onset GI cancers during 2020–2030. Objective: The aim is to evaluate the global, regional, and national trends in the burden of children and adolescents under 14 from 1990 to 2019, as well as future trend predictions. Methods: In Global Burden of Disease (GBD), we reported the incidence, prevalence rate and the years lived with disability (YLDs), the incidence per 100,000 people, and the average annual percentage change (AAPC). We further analyzed these global trends by age, gender, and social development index (SDI). We use joinpoint regression analysis to determine the year with the largest global trend change. Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) was used for predictions. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the incidence rate, prevalence and YLDs of AD under 14 years old showed a downward trend. The incidence rate of AD among people under 5 years old has the largest decline [AAPC: -0.13 (95% CI: -0.15 to -0.11), P < 0.001]. The incidence rate, prevalence and YLDs of AD in women were higher than those in men regardless of age group. Regional, Asia has the highest AD incidence rate in 2019. National, Mongolia has the highest AD incidence rate in 2019. The largest drop in AD incidence rate, prevalence and YLDs between 1990 and 2019 was in the United States. Conclusion: From 1990 to 2019, the global incidence rate of children and adolescents under 14 declined. With the emergence of therapeutic drugs, the prevalence and YLDs rate declined significantly. Despite comprising almost half of all patients undergoing valvular repair, data on transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients with bicuspid aortic stenosis (BAS) are limited. We aimed to evaluate whether there are any sex differences in trends and outcomes of TAVR in this population. We utilized the National Inpatient Sample from 2012 to 2020 to identify admissions with BAS who underwent TAVR and analyzed trends and outcomes. Our primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and secondary outcomes were in-hospital complications. We used two models to adjust for demographics (A) and interventions (B). Between 2012 to 2020, there were 76,540 hospitalizations for BAS patients who underwent AVR, among which 6,010 (7.9 %) underwent TAVR. There was an overall increasing trend in number of TAVR cases with a decreasing trend in mortality (2013: 8.7 %, 2020: 1.3 %). TAVR was performed more in males (61.1% vs 38.9 %). Despite the worse baseline characteristics in males, in-hospital mortality (2.4% vs. 1.5 %; OR: 1.584; 95 % CI: 0.621–4.038; p = 0.335) and secondary outcomes were similar across both sexes, even after adjusting for demographics and interventions. TAVR in BAS has grown rapidly in the last decade. Males comprised the majority and had more comorbidities, but mortality and complications were similar in both sexes. Despite the increasing number of cases, a decreasing trend in mortality was observed for both sexes ultimately approaching that of SAVR, suggesting that TAVR may be a safe alternative among eligible males and females with bicuspid AS. Purpose: To understand national trends and costs associated with the utilization of anti-osteoporotic medication and DEXA screening within the year following a sentinel/primary distal radius fracture. Methods: The 2008-2015Q1 Humana Administrative Claims database was queried to identify patients aged ≥50 years, with a "sentinel" occurrence of a primary closed distal radius fracture. Linear regression models were used to report and assess for significant trends in utilization of anti-osteoporotic medication and DEXA screenings within the year following the fracture. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess for factors associated with receiving or not receiving anti-osteoporotic medication. Results: A total of 14 526 sentinel distal radius fractures were included in the study. Only 7.2% (n = 1046) of patients received anti-osteoporosis medication in the year following the distal radius fracture. Treatment with medication for osteoporosis declined from 8.2% in 2008 to 5.9% in 2015, whereas the rate of DEXA screening increased from 14.8% in 2008 to 23.6% in 2015. The most common prescribed treatment was alendronate sodium (n = 835; 79.8%—$49/patient). Factors associated with increased odds of receiving anti-osteoporotic medication were age 70 to 79 years (odds ratio [OR], 1.45; P =.014), age 80 to 89 years (OR, 1.66; P =.001), Asian (OR, 2.95; P =.002) or Hispanic (OR, 1.77; P =.006) ethnicity, belonging to South (OR, 1.19; P =.029) or West (OR, 1.37; P =.010), and having an Elixhauser Comorbidity Index score of 3 (OR, 2.14; P =.024) or > 3 (OR, 2.05; P =.022). Conclusions: Despite a rising utilization of DEXA screening following "sentinel" distal radius fractures, the proportion of individuals who receive anti-osteoporotic treatment is decreasing over time. This paper introduces moral argument analytics, a technology that provides insights into the use of moral arguments in discourse. We analyse five socio-political corpora of argument annotated data from offline and online discussions, totalling 240k words with 9k arguments, with an average annotation accuracy of 78%. Using a lexicon-based method, we automatically annotate these arguments with moral foundations, achieving an estimated accuracy of 83%. Quantitative analysis allows us to observe statistical patterns and trends in the use of moral arguments, whereas qualitative analysis enables us to understand and explain the communication strategies in the use of moral arguments in different settings. For instance, supporting arguments often rely on Loyalty and Authority, while attacking arguments use Care. We find that online discussions exhibit a greater diversity of moral foundations and a higher negative valence of moral arguments. Online arguers often rely more on Harm rather than Care, Degradation rather than Sanctity. These insights have significant implications for AI applications, particularly in understanding and predicting human and machine moral behaviours. Hydrological drought is a pervasive and reoccurring challenge in managing water resources. Reservoirs are critical for lessening the impacts of drought on water available for many uses. We use a novel and generalized approach to identify periods of unusually low reservoir storage—via comparisons to operational rule curves and historical patterns—to investigate how droughts affect storage in 250 reservoirs across the conterminous U.S. (CONUS). We find that the maximum amount of water stored in reservoirs is decreasing, and that periods of unusually low storage are becoming longer, more severe, and more variable in (a) western and central CONUS reservoirs, and (b) reservoirs with primarily over‐year storage. Results suggest that reservoir storage has become less reliable and more vulnerable to larger deviations from desired storage patterns. These changes have coincided with ongoing shifts to the hydroclimate of CONUS, and with sedimentation further reducing available reservoir storage. Plain Language Summary: Drought in water systems is a major challenge in managing water resources. Reservoirs are important as they can lessen the impacts of drought on water availability for many users. However, they are impacted by drought as well. Background: Animal movement arises from complex interactions between animals and their heterogeneous environment. To better understand the movement process, it can be divided into behavioural, temporal and spatial components. Although methods exist to address those various components, it remains challenging to integrate them in a single movement analysis. Methods: We present an analytic workflow that integrates the behavioural, temporal and spatial components of the movement process and their interactions, which also allows for the assessment of the relative importance of those components. We construct a daily cyclic covariate to represent temporally cyclic movement patterns, such as diel variation in activity, and combine the three components in a multi-modal Hidden Markov Model framework using existing methods and R functions. We compare the trends and statistical fits of models that include or exclude any of the behavioural, spatial and temporal components, and perform variance partitioning on the model predictions that included all components to assess their relative importance to the movement process, both in isolation and in interaction. Results: We apply our workflow to a case study on the movements of plains zebra, blue wildebeest and eland antelope in a South African reserve. Behavioural modes impacted movement the most, followed by diel rhythms and then the spatial environment (viz. tree cover and terrain slope). Interactions between the components often explained more of the movement variation than the marginal effect of the spatial environment did on its own. Omitting components from the analysis led either to the inability to detect relationships between input and response variables, resulting in overgeneralisations when drawing conclusions about the movement process, or to detections of questionable relationships that appeared to be spurious. Conclusions: Our analytic workflow can be used to integrate the behavioural, temporal and spatial components of the movement process and quantify their relative contributions, thereby preventing incomplete or overly generic ecological interpretations. We demonstrate that understanding the drivers of animal movement, and ultimately the ecological phenomena that emerge from it, critically depends on considering the various components of the movement process, and especially the interactions between them. Objectives Methods Results Conclusion The objective of this study is to assess the trends in treatment selection for patients with de novo metastatic castration‐sensitive prostate cancer in the era of upfront combination therapy.This multicenter retrospective study included 595 patients treated with either upfront combination therapy (upfront novel hormonal therapies and taxane‐based chemotherapy) or vintage therapy (androgen deprivation therapy with or without bicalutamide) between 2016 and 2021. High tumor burden metastatic disease was defined when a patient met the CHAARTED or LATITUDE criteria. We evaluated trends in treatment selection and reasons for selecting vintage therapy.Of the 595, 123 and 472 patients were classified as having low and high tumor‐burden disease, respectively. The Use of upfront combination therapy was found to be rapidly increasing with utilization rates of 72% and 54% in 2021 for high and low tumor‐burden disease, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis found older age, poor performance status, and nonacademic center were significantly associated with the selection of vintage therapy. Of the 163 patients who received vintage hormone therapy after approval of upfront therapy, 74.2% had a specific reason for avoiding upfront therapy. The reasons for selecting vintage therapy included refusal (39.8%), older age (67.6%), frailty (56.3%), and comorbidity (40.8%). Furthermore, 16.9% of patients declined upfront combination therapy due to cost concerns.Upfront combination therapy use has 72% and 54% prevalence among patients with high and low tumor burden diseases, respectively, in this current practice. Snow is particularly impacted by climate change and therefore there is an urgent need to understand the temporal and spatial variability of depth of snowfall (HN) trends. However, the analysis of historical HN observations on large‐scale areas is often impeded by lack of continuous long‐term time series availability. This study investigates HN trends using observed time series spanning the period 1920–2020 from 46 sites in the Alps at different elevations. To discern patterns and variations in HN over the years, our analysis focuses also on key parameters such as precipitation (P), mean air temperature (TMEAN), and large‐scale synoptic descriptors, that is, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) indices. Our findings reveal that in the last 100 years and below 2000 m a.s.l., despite a slight increase in winter precipitation, there was a decrease in HN over the Alps, especially for southern and low‐elevation sites. The South‐West and South‐East regions experienced an average loss of 4.9 and 3.8%/decade, respectively. A smaller relative loss was found in the Northern region (2.3%/decade). The negative HN trends can be mainly explained by an increase of TMEAN by 0.15°C/decade. Most of the decrease in HN occurred mainly between 1980 and 2020, as a result of a more pronounced increase in TMEAN. This is also confirmed by the change of the running correlation between HN and TMEAN, NAO, AO over time, which until 1980 were not correlated at all, while the correlation increased in later years. This suggests that in more recent years favourable combinations of temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric pattern have become more crucial for snowfall to occur. Background: Continuous vital sign monitoring via wearable technology, combined with algorithm-based notifications, has been utilized for early detection of patient deterioration. In this retrospective observational study, we summarize a large-scale implementation of a continuous monitoring system in medical–surgical units of two hospitals over the course of fifteen (15) months. Methods: An FDA-cleared wireless monitoring device (BioButton®, BioIntelliSense Inc., Golden, CO, USA), was placed on each patient upon admission. The wearable device measures heart rate and respiratory rate at rest, skin temperature, and patient activity levels. High-frequency data (up to 1440 measurements per day) are transmitted to display in exception management software (BioDashboard™, version 2.9, BioIntelliSense Inc.). Algorithmic and rules-based notifications are triggered based on clinical and statistical trending criteria. We present (i) agreement of device readings with bedside charted measurements, (ii) the frequency of notifications, (iii) the occurrence of notifications prior to clinical deterioration events, and (iv) impact on clinical management, including early data on length of stay (LOS). Results: In total, 11,977 patient encounters were monitored at two sites. Bias ±95% limits of agreement were 1.8 ± 12.5 for HR and 0.4 ± 8.0 for RR. The rates of notifications were 0.97 and 0.65 per patient-day at Sites 1 and 2, respectively. Among clinical deteriorations, 73% (66%) had at least one notification within 24 h prior at Site 1 (Site 2). At Site 1, there were 114 cases for which a notification led to a new or changed physician's order. LOS in the first unit monitored by the system exhibited a decreasing trend from 3.07 days to 2.75 days over 12 months. Background/Objectives: Acetabular fractures, traditionally linked to high-impact trauma in younger adults, are increasingly observed in the elderly due to falls and poor bone quality. This demographic shift necessitates updated treatment approaches. This study analyzes demographic trends and treatment evolution over a decade using the German pelvic fracture registry. Methods: Data on acetabular fractures were analyzed from the German pelvic fracture registry of the German Trauma Society. Parameters included classification, demographics, treatment methods, and surgical details. Trends were assessed by grouping patients based on treatment intervals and age, comparing treatment methods, surgical approaches, and reduction quality across these groups, considering fracture types and treatment volume. Results: The study included 2853 unilateral acetabular fractures with a mean patient age of 61.5 years, showing an increasing age trend. A shift from simple to complex fractures involving the anterior acetabular column was observed. Operative treatment was performed in 62.5% of cases, more common in non-geriatric patients and those with posterior column involvement. The use of anterior intrapelvic approaches increased over time, replacing the Ilioinguinal extrapelvic approach. Anatomical reduction was achieved in 47.4% of cases, with 31.7% having imperfect reductions and 20.9% poor reductions. High-volume centers had significantly better reduction outcomes, particularly for simple fractures. Geriatric patients exhibited worse reduction quality compared to younger patients. In-hospital mortality was stable at 3.3%. Conclusions: The study highlights a demographic shift towards an older patient population, leading to more complex fracture patterns. Despite advancements in surgical techniques and new implant technologies, these demographic changes have resulted in lower reduction quality for complex fractures. In sub‐Saharan Africa, colorectal cancer (CRC) has historically been considered a rare disease, although some previous studies have suggested that the incidence is increasing. We examine time trends in the incidence of CRC using data from 12 population‐based cancer registries in 11 countries of sub‐Saharan Africa that were able to provide time series data for periods of 12 or more years, or with earlier data with which recent rates may be compared. Age‐standardized incidence rates were highest in the higher‐income countries, and were increasing in all of the populations studied, and these increases were statistically significant in all but three. Current evidence has suggested a link between the increased adoption of western lifestyle habits with colorectal cancer, and along with increasing urbanization of African populations, there is an increase in body weight, as well as evidence of increasing consumption of meat, sugars, and alcohol. The purpose of this study was to investigate research trends in artificial intelligence studies related to education that were published in the Web of Science database. This review conducted a bibliometric analysis of 4673 articles published between 1975 and 2023 and explored trends in several areas, including the annual distribution of publications, frequently studied topics, top authors, top countries, top universities/departments, top journals and publishers, and top funders. The findings highlighted that the number of studies increased exponentially after 2010. The most often used terms in artificial intelligence research in education were machine learning, deep learning, and data mining. Studies in higher education have been more prevalent than studies in elementary and secondary education. The USA, mainland China, and Australia were the three most productive nations. Most productive authors were connected to academic institutions in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or mainland China. Furthermore, there was little cooperation among the most productive authors andcountries. In addition to the abundance of journals on educational technology, it is crucial to emphasize the dearth of publications on education across different disciplines. Background: Working mothers are in a situation where they have to manage both their job and maternal roles simultaneously. We aim to show the relationship between mothers' breastfeeding behavior and working status, as well as the effect of their working conditions on the continuation of breastfeeding. Methods: This study examined 3557 (weighted 3490) child-mother pairs from Turkey's Demographic Health Survey data in 2008, 2013, and 2018 with a complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis to explore the relationship between breastfeeding and maternal employment. Results: In our study, 35.5% of the mothers had never worked, 18.6% were still working, and 45.9% had worked in the past but were not currently working. When breastfeeding percentages were examined based on maternal working status, mothers who worked in 2008 had significantly lower breastfeeding percentages than those who had never worked or had worked previously but not currently. In both 2013 and 2018, after legal regulations, maternal employment didn't affect breastfeeding. After adjusting for confounding factors, maternal employment in the industry sector had lower breastfeeding percentages [AOR:0.06 (95% CI: 0.01–0.48)] than those working in agriculture. Conclusion: It seems that adhering to legal regulations such as paid maternity leave and lactation leave can promote breastfeeding. However, less is known regarding the mortality burden from pneumonia in the United States and how this burden has changed over time.Death rates from causes related to pneumonia were determined using the CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) data from 1999-2019. Pneumonia deaths were calculated for the overall population as well as for sociodemographic subgroups. We also analysed changes in death rates over time.Overall, 2.1% of total US deaths during the period between 1999 and 2019 were due to pneumonia (2.6% in 1999 and 1.5% in 2019). Mortality declined over time for both men and women, and across most age cohorts, as well as all racial, urbanisation, and regional categories. Rates of pneumonia deaths were higher among males as compared to females (age-adjusted mortality rate ratio (AAMRR) = 1.35; 95% CI: 1.34-1.35). Compared to White Americans, Black Americans had the highest pneumonia-related mortality rates of any racial group (AAMRR = 1.11; 95% CI: 1.10-1.11).Rates of pneumonia-related death have decreased in the United States in recent decades. Objective: This study aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the global burden of esophageal cancer (EC) and determine the temporal trends and factors influencing changes in the global burden. Methods: The latest incidence and mortality data for EC worldwide were obtained from GLOBALCAN 2022. The mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) rates for EC from 1990--2019 were sourced from the 2019 Global Burden of Diseases. Trends in EC mortality and DALYs attributable to 11 risk factors or clusters of risk were analyzed using the joinpoint regression model. The trends in age-related EC burden were assessed using a decomposition approach. Results: An estimated 511,054 new cases of EC were diagnosed in 2022 with 445,391 deaths worldwide. Approximately 75% of cases and deaths occurred in Asia. Nearly 50% of global EC deaths and DALYs were attributed to tobacco use in men in 2019, while 20% were attributed to high body mass index (BMI) in women. From 1990--2019, EC deaths and DALYs attributable to almost all risk factors had declining trends, while EC deaths and DALYs attributed to high BMI in men had upward trends. The age-related EC burden exhibited an upward trend driven by population growth and aging, which contributed to 307.4 thousand deaths and 7.2 million DALYs due to EC. Conclusions: The EC burden remains substantial worldwide. Effective tobacco and obesity control measures are critical for addressing the risk-attributable burden of EC. Pornography has evolved into new alternative forms such as netporn, altporn and ethical porn. These are innovative approaches by the porn industry, not only in an attempt to portray sexual practices as realistically as possible, but also to provide more equal and pleasurable conditions for the actors involved. Amateur pornography, which is filmed by the actors themselves and posted on the Internet, is also growing in popularity due to its greater authenticity compared to 'classic pornography'. Background High-speed global travel, increased trade, world population growth, migration, urbanization and climate change have favoured the emergence and spread of pathogens. We aimed to analyse the evolution of imported infections in Spain during 2012–2022 and the potential impact of some of the abovementioned factors on differential morbidity patterns. Methods In this retrospective study (January 2012 to December 2022), we analysed data collected by the +Redivi network across 25 health centres. The network's standardised database records new cases of imported infections, including patient demographics, travel history, pre-travel advice and diagnostic information. To assess outcome rates over time and potential interactions, we constructed penalized weighted models to reduce the bias related to a low event rate and used weighted logistic regression for morbidity outcomes. Results We recorded 25 632 episodes, comprising 13 913 migrants, 4047 visiting friends and relatives (VFR) immigrants, 392 VFR travellers and 7280 travellers. Most immigrants came from South America (48.3%), Sub-Saharan Africa (28.5%), North Africa (6.6%), South Central Asia (5.4%) and Central America/Caribbean (5.3%). The most common regions visited by travellers were Sub-Saharan Africa (33.5%), South America (24.5%), Central America/Caribbean (13.5%), Southeast Asia (12%) and South Central Asia (10%). The proportion of diagnoses of malaria, strongyloidiasis and unspecified self-limiting febrile syndrome < 3 weeks remained unchanged during the study period. An increased frequency of diagnosis was reported for schistosomiasis, blastocystosis, giardiasis, dengue, diarrhoea, new cases of HIV, latent and pulmonary tuberculosis, whereas a decrease was reported for syphilis, chikungunya fever, Chagas disease and eosinophilia. We detected interactions between time and sex or type of participant across the different diagnoses. Conclusions Our study underscores the importance of epidemiological data in understanding infectious diseases dynamics among travellers and migrants, emphasizing how demographic shifts, migration trends and healthcare policies affect disease profiles. This study aimed to assess the burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Latin America. An ecological study design was applied. The data on T2DM (i.e. incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years [DALYs], years lived with disability [YLDs] and years of life lost [YLLs]) were extracted from the Global Burden Disease 2019 study. To assess the trends, the average annual percentage change was computed using the joinpoint regression analysis. Approximately 2.3 million new cases of T2DM were diagnosed in Latin America in 2019, with about 214,000 deaths. The age-standardised rates of T2DM burden in 2019 were highest in Central Latin America. Incidence of T2DM has increased in both males and females in Latin America over the last three decades, while mortality has increased only in males. Of particular concern are the significant increasing trends in the incidence of T2DM among individuals in the young age and middle age groups (15–64 years) in both men and in women. Increasing trends in the burden of T2DM were observed in almost all countries of Andean Latin America, the Caribbean and Central Latin America (in particular, in Guatemala, where T2DM incidence increased by 2.4% per year, mortality by 3.7%, DALYs by 3.4%, YLDs by 2.7% and YLLs by 3.8%). T2DM is an important health issue in Latin America due to the high mortality and disability burdens and the impact on life expectancy and quality of life of the population. Surface ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) measured at the rural station in Belsk (51.83° N, 20.79° E), Poland, over the period of 1995–2023, were examined for long-term variability of O3 and its relationship to changes in the air temperature and NOx. Negative and positive trends were found for the 95th and 5th percentile, respectively, in the O3 data. A weak positive correlation (statistically significant) of 0.33 was calculated between O3 and the temperature averaged from sunrise to sunset during the photoactive part of the year (April–September). Recently, O3 maxima have become less sensitive to temperature changes, reducing the incidence of photochemical smog. The ozone–climate penalty factor decreased from 4.4 µg/m3/°C in the 1995–2004 period to 3.9 µg/m3/°C in the 2015–2023 period. The relationship between Ox (O3 + NO2) and NOx concentrations averaged from sunrise to sunset determined the local and regional contribution to Ox variability. The seasonal local and regional contributions remained unchanged in the period of 1995–2023, stabilizing the average O3 level at Belsk. "NOx-limited" and "VOC-limited" photochemical regimes prevailed in the summer and autumn, respectively. For many winter and spring seasons between 1995 and 2023, the type of photochemical regime could not be accurately determined, making it difficult to build an effective O3 mitigation policy. Background: Recent data reveal a marked rise in the detection and mortality rates of Desmoplastic Malignant Melanoma (DMM). This trend underscores the imperative for an in-depth analysis of DMM’s epidemiology, which is crucial for the formulation of precise medical and public health strategies. This investigation seeks to elucidate the variations in the incidence and mortality of DMM over a 15-year period (2005–2019). Methods: Data on DMM patients was sourced from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Both incidence and incidence-based mortality rates (IBM) were directly extracted from the SEER database. Joinpoint regression was used to analyze and calculate the average annual percent change (AAPC) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Between 2005 and 2019, 3,384 DMM cases were identified, boasting an age-adjusted incidence rate of 36.3 cases per 1000,000 person-years (95% CI 3.51–3.76) and an IBM of 1.65cases per 1000,000 person-years (95% CI 1.57–1.74). Of these, 2,353 were males (69.53%) and 1,031 were females (30.47%). There were 1894 patients (55.97%) who were over 70 years old. Predominantly, DMM lesions manifested in exposed areas: Limbs (955, 28.22%), Face (906, 26.77%), and Scalp and Neck (865, 25.56%). The incidence of DMM increased significantly at a rate of APC = 0.9% during 2005–2019, while the incidence-based mortality showed a significant upward trend (APC = 7%) during 2005–2012, and slowly increasing trend (APC = 0.6%) during 2012–2019. In contrast to the modest upward trajectory in female incidence and mortality, male incidence initially surged, later declining, while male mortality peaked and stabilized post-2012. The primary sites for incidence and mortality were chronically sun-exposed areas: Face, Scalp and Neck, and Limbs. Conclusions: In recent years, the incidence and incidence-based mortality of DMM have significantly increased. This work investigates the spatio-temporal variability of planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) characteristics by leveraging multi-decadal (1980–2019) data from India's first high-resolution regional atmospheric reanalysis–IMDAA, in conjunction with ERA5 and MERRA-2. The spatial variability in the seasonal and annual climatological mean PBLH obtained from IMDAA agrees well with ERA5 and MERRA-2, albeit with some differences. The IMDAA and ERA5 PBLH exhibit a high correlation (> 0.6) over the entire India and also show a significant positive (negative) correlation with MERRA-2 over northwest and central (southern and eastern) Indian regions. However, IMDAA tends to overestimate ERA5 PBLH (~ < 500 m) and underestimate MERRA-2 PBLH (~ > 500 m) during all seasons. Despite these discrepancies, IMDAA successfully captures the diurnal changes in PBLH similar to ERA5 and MERRA-2. Furthermore, the evaluation of IMDAA PBLH in conjunction with other meteorological factors suggests that PBLH exhibits a negative correlation with relative humidity (RH), indicating a decrease in PBLH as RH increases. On the other hand, PBLH shows positive correlations with surface temperature and surface zonal winds. Surface sensible and latent heat flux exhibit positive and negative correlations with PBLH, respectively, over Indian sub-regions throughout all seasons. Moreover, IMDAA realistically represents the declining trend of PBLH (-1.1 to -76.2 m decade− 1) compared to ERA5 in India during all seasons. The results from IMDAA, in concurrence with other reanalyses, demonstrate that the decreasing trend in PBLH over India is associated with rising surface temperatures and weakening surface zonal winds. This trend is also attributed to increasing latent heat flux and decreasing sensible heat flux. The changes in surface fluxes over India are attributed to the intensification of Indian monsoon rainfall in the last three decades. Moreover, El Niño appears to be an important control on PBLH variability over India during different seasons, which is realistically represented by IMDAA as in ERA5 and MERRA-2. Across high-income countries, adolescent emotional concerns have been increasing in prevalence over the past two decades and it is unclear why this is occurring, including whether and how substance use relates to these changing trends. On the other hand, substance use has been generally declining, and little is known about the role of emotional concerns in these trends. Several studies have explored the changes in co-occurring substance use and emotional concerns among adolescents over time, with mixed results and inconsistent messaging about the implications of the findings. In response, we developed a theoretical framework for exploring the intersection between trends in substance use and emotional concerns (InterSECT Framework). This framework includes a discussion and related examples for 3 core hypotheses: (1) strengthening of co-occurrence, or the "hardening" hypothesis; (2) co-occurrence staying the same, or the "consistency" hypothesis; and (3) weakening of co-occurrence, or the "decoupling" hypothesis. This framework seeks to guide the conceptualization, evaluation, and understanding of changes in the co-occurrence of substance use and emotional concerns over time, including outlining a research agenda informed by pre-existing research and youth perspectives. Background: Lung cancer (LC) is currently the number one malignancy death rate disease in China, and its disease burden is serious. The study aimed to analyze trends of LC and its risk factor attributable disease in China from 1990 to 2019 and predict the next 41 years. Methods: The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was used to analyze the trend of LC and its risk factor attributable incidence, deaths, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) rate in China from 1990 to 2019, collected in the Global Burden of Disease 2019. Cochran–Armitage trends examine trends in lung cancer disease burden by sex, age, and attributable risk factor groups in China from 1990 to 2019. In addition, based on data on death and DALYs rate due to LC and its risk factors between 1990 and 2019, an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model was developed to predict the change in the trend of burden of disease due to LC and its risk factors over the next 41 years, and the model was evaluated using the model parameters root mean square error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the incidence, mortality and DALYs of LC were all increased. Among the eight risk factors associated with lung cancer, the DALYs rate and mortality rate of lung cancer risk factors for Chinese residents increased from 1990 to 2019, except for household air pollution from solid fuels and diet low in fruit, which showed a decrease; among them, the DALYs rate and mortality rate due to ambient particulate matter pollution showed the greatest increase with AAPC values of 2.880 and 3.310, respectively, while DALYs and mortality rates due to household air pollution from solid fuels showed the largest decreases, with AAPC values of −4.755 and −4.348, respectively. The results of the ARIMA model predictions show that both the mortality rate and the rate of DALYs for lung cancer are increasing yearly, and it is predicted that the rate of DALYs for lung cancer by 2060 will reach 740.095/100 000 and the mortality rate will reach 35.151/100 000. It is expected that by 2060, the top four risk factors for lung cancer in China will be, in order of DALYs rate and mortality rate, smoking, ambient particulate matter pollution, high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG), and secondhand smoke, with HFPG showing the greatest increase. Conclusions: The LC burden increased from 1990 to 2019 in China, the LC burden that could be attributed to HFPG will continue to increase in the next 40 years, and will be the third most factor by 2060. Purpose: This nationwide study aims to delineate the incidence and trends of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (rRD) in Germany across 17 years (2005–2021). Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the German Federal Statistics Office and the Institute for the Hospital Remuneration System (InEK). The dataset includes approximately 19 million annual inpatient admissions annually. Retinal detachment was identified through ICD-10 code H33.0. Adjusted incidence rates were estimated after excluding reoperation cases. We used R Statistical Software to calculate estimates to 2021, and Tableau for visualisation. Results: From 2005 to 2021, Germany reported 332,650 rRD cases, with males consistently more affected. Adjusted incidence rose from 15.6 per 100,000 in 2005 to 24.8 in 2021. Variable annual percentage changes in incidence were noted, averaging 4.0% for males and 2.6% for females. The annual mean age of affected individuals ranged from 60.2 to 62 years, with a median age between 62 and 63, suggesting increasing diagnoses at younger ages. Hospital stays declined from 6 to 3.3 days, and higher management rates were observed in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatine. Conclusion: The study confirms an increasing incidence of rRD in Germany from 2005 to 2021, particularly among males. These findings call for further research to investigate the underlying causes. The aim of this work is to analyze the changes in streamflow drought and flood distribution in Polish rivers through data decomposition and trend analysis. The study dataset constituted daily streamflow at 250 gauges located across Poland (eastern Europe) from January 1, 1965, to December 31, 2020. Hydrological extremes were identified by the means of the objective threshold method, and basic parameters such as occurrence frequency, duration times, and event volumes were calculated along with minimal and maximal flow information, aggregated on monthly and annual scales. The seasonal trend decomposition using Loess (STL) method was used to decompose long-term changes from raw datasets. Results indicated that the application of the STL decomposition significantly improved the ability to detect changes in the streamflow time series, which is crucial for further research on climate-induced changes in different parts of the world. The identified trends indicate a decrease in flooding and an increase in streamflow drought magnitudes across Poland, except for mountainous areas in southeastern Poland, where drought magnitudes increase during summer and decrease in winter, while flooding increases in late spring and early autumn.
