BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is associated with adverse health outcomes among Asian Americans, who exhibit the least adherence to physical activity guidelines compared with other racial and ethnic groups. Mobile app-based interventions are a promising approach to promote healthy behaviors. However, there is a lack of app-based interventions focused on improving physical activity among Asian Americans whose primary language is not English. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a 5-week intervention using a culturally and linguistically adapted, evidence-based mobile phone app with an accelerometer program, to promote physical activity among Chinese-, Tagalog-, or Vietnamese-speaking Americans. METHODS: Participants were recruited through collaborations with community-based organizations. The intervention was adapted from a 12-month physical activity randomized controlled trial involving the app and accelerometer for English-speaking adults. Sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and physical measurements were collected at the baseline visit. A 7-day run-in period was conducted to screen for the participants who could wear a Fitbit One (Fitbit LLC) accelerometer and complete the apps daily step diary. During the 4-week intervention period, participants wore the accelerometer and reported their daily steps in the app. Participants also received daily messages to reinforce key contents taught during an in-person educational session, remind them to input steps, and provide tailored feedback. Feasibility measures were the percentage of eligible participants completing the run-in period and the percentage of participants who used the app diary for at least 5 out of 7 days during the intervention period. We conducted poststudy participant interviews to explore overall intervention acceptability. RESULTS: A total of 19 participants were enrolled at the beginning of the study with a mean age of 47 (SD 13.3; range 29-70) years, and 58% (n=11) of them were female. Of the participants, 26% (n=5) were Chinese, 32% (n=6) were Vietnamese, and 42% (n=8) were Filipino. All participants met the run-in criteria to proceed with the intervention. Adherence to the app diary ranged from 74% (n=14) in week 2 to 95% (n=18) in week 4. The daily average steps per week from accelerometers increased each week from 8451 (SD 3378) steps during the run-in period to 10,930 (SD 4213) steps in week 4. Participants reported positive experiences including an increased motivation to walk and the enjoyment of being able to monitor their physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first pilot study of a multicomponent intervention and evidence-based mobile phone app to promote physical activity among Asian Americans who use apps in traditional Chinese, Tagalog, or Vietnamese, which demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability. Future work focused on multilingual mobile apps to address disparities in physical inactivity among Asian Americans should be considered.

The current work presents unconventional but instructionally useful approaches to data analysis and modelling that allow for measurements of the acceleration due to gravity, g, using free-falling motion and the popular Tracker software. The two techniques detailed in this article illustrate the employability of the Pythagorean Theorem and the inverse tangent function in modelling free-falling motion that likewise, expectedly, permit for the determination of g. These two mathematical concepts are brought to relevance by strategically situating the origin of the coordinate system at an appropriate point. The models returned values of the gravitational acceleration that are comparable to that by the traditional technique, the one directly based on the vertical position-time data. Additionally, the unconventional free-fall data analyses presented in this paper suggest extra and insightful activities for the students, exercises on a notably less-automated nonlinear curve fitting on a spreadsheet (MS Excel) at most. Ultimately, by applying familiar mathematical concepts associated with a right triangle to nontraditional contexts like free-fall, this laboratory or lecture activity is perceived to spark greater interest of the students and enhance learning by unifying theory and experimental data. The welfare of donkeys remains a compelling subject for researchers, with limited literature available on the response of the donkey cardiovascular system during strenuous exercise. The study aimed to address two primary objectives. Firstly, to assess the reliability of wearable devices in detecting heart rate (HR) and ECG readings. Secondly, to determine HR, locomotor and cardiac troponin 1 (cTnI) levels in donkeys during exercise. A total of seven donkeys were outfitted with two systems for ECG measurements, namely Equimetre and the Standard base apex, to enable a comparison between the two. Additionally, fifteen apparently healthy donkeys equipped with Equimetre were divided into two groups: the race group (R), consisting of donkeys trained for racing, and the non-race group (NR), comprising donkeys used for regular riding. The results indicated a level of agreement between the two devices in intervals R-R (P = < 0.0001), S-T (P = 0.0002), Q-T(P = 0.0003), P-R (P = 0.0037), segment P-R (P = 0.0023) and HR (P = < 0.0001) at rest. This suggested that Equimetre can provide a level of accepted ECG reading in donkey. No significant difference in heart response and locomotor parameters between donkey groups, although this finding needs further studies to verify it and to understand the dynamics of donkey. Open-source video analysis and modeling program "Tracker" is a powerful tool in physics education and classroom teaching. The application of Tracker is demonstrated in this article with a simple and well-studied problem, the simple pendulum. The motion of the pendulum is videographed using a smartphone and analysed with Tracker for different amplitudes of oscillation. The period of oscillation and phase-space trajectory of the pendulum are determined using this application and compared with results from the standard textbook theory. A first-order anharmonic coupling factor is determined from the measured frequency shift, which is found reasonable with the analytical result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of activity trackers in mobile health studies to passively collect physical data has shown promise in lessening participation burden to provide actively contributed patient-reported outcome (PRO) information. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop machine learning models to classify and predict PRO scores using Fitbit data from a cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: Two different models were built to classify PRO scores: a random forest classifier model that treated each week of observations independently when making weekly predictions of PRO scores, and a hidden Markov model that additionally took correlations between successive weeks into account. Analyses compared model evaluation metrics for (1) a binary task of distinguishing a normal PRO score from a severe PRO score and (2) a multiclass task of classifying a PRO score state for a given week. Distance learning in the years 2020-2021 resulted in a much greater focus on the problem of shaping the ability to use digital tools by science teachers. In this context, interest in using video analysis tools in remote teaching science subjects such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, and others has increased significantly. The research problem undertaken in the work was defined as follows: is the analysis of video recordings an effective tool for remote teaching of physics at various levels of education? Tracker: Video Analysis and Modeling Tool provides physical data from moving and still image processing and mathematical modeling for descriptive and predictive lab exercises and educational experiments. The principles of creating educational films suitable for analysis in this digital environment have also been generalized. In the STEM laboratory of the National Center “Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine,” model video recordings of physical experiments were created, and the possibilities of their use in teaching were determined; a collection of video recordings with assigned tasks was created, and original methods of conducting educational physics experiments were developed. Video analysis is a unique technology that can not only enhance science and math lessons but also deepen students’ understanding of the scientific basis of observed phenomena and processes formalized in formulas, graphical and algebraic data. Teaching methods that use video analysis were used both in formal and informal education, in distance learning (caused, inter alia, by the COVID-19 pandemic), in the all-Ukrainian online tournament in natural sciences “Open Natural Shows,” in summer science schools for students, in teacher training, seminars, and educational conferences. It can be expected that video analysis in teaching physics will broaden the understanding of ways to acquire scientific knowledge and effectively shape the skills of using digital tools among all participants of the educational process.

Renewable energy is undergoing significant advancements through the utilization of new technologies. Among these technologies, fixed solar panels serve as a fundamental type of solar photovoltaic energy generator. Monitoring and optimizing the performance of these panels is achieved through the implementation of controller algorithms. However, there is a growing emphasis on axis tracking systems for solar panels, as that has the feasible to extract more power compared to fixed panels. In this context, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, deep learning, and cloud computing presents a contemporary solution for addressing various challenges associated with monitoring renewable solar energy systems. By employing sensors and actuators grouped within an IoT framework, real-time data can be extracted and stored in a cloud server, allowing remote access from anywhere. Furthermore, the use of meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, such as the Whale Optimization Algorithm, has become commonplace in solving engineering issues. In this proposed system, the performance of horizontal axis trackers is analyzed and compared with fixed panels using the WOA-based axis tracking analysis. Through the application of a control algorithm, optimal values can be obtained under typical weather conditions. The system's simulation and performance are thoroughly assessed and evaluated. The structure and operating principle of a four-stroke internal combustion engine are usually demonstrated using the cut-away model of an internal combustion engine or its computer animation. However, by observing the operation of the engine mechanism, the understanding of the main essence, which consists of the transformation of thermal energy from the combustion of gasoline into the mechanical energy of the piston movement is lost. This work describes the demonstration of the ignition and combustion of the fuel mixture and the transformation of thermal energy generated by the combustion of gasoline into the mechanical energy of the piston. A paper rocket is used instead of a piston for the spectacle of the experiment. This demonstration does not leave anyone from the audience indifferent. The use of teaching aids in learning can provide direct learning experiences to students so that learning becomes more meaningful. Students observe physics phenomena that occur and get physics data from these phenomena. The observed physics phenomena often happen very quickly, so it is impossible to record data manually. Therefore, a method is needed to facilitate data recording and analysis. One way to use a video-based laboratory (VBL) is by utilizing a tracker. This method allows for analyzing the objects contained in a video and displays the data in graphs and tables. This study aims to investigate the motion of objects using tracker video analysis on a mini-roller coaster tool. The video analyzed is a video of a solid ball-shaped object with a mass of 8.6 g moving along a roller-coaster trajectory. By tracking an object, physics data will be obtained to analyze acceleration and the law of conservation of mechanical energy. An analytical review of satellite navigation systems, devices for receiving and processing spatial information, in the context of their use in monitoring and extinguishing fires in the natural environment, is presented. Satellite navigation systems are considered both in terms of user devices and their global organization. Promising Russian and foreign developments in the field of satellite navigation and information transmission are discussed, which can significantly increase the efficiency of fire extinguishing and the safety of fighting fire in the natural environment. The most optimal option for controlling the forces and means of fire extinguishing has been determined, which provides for the construction of a system that combines the possibilities of using both radio and satellite communication channels. This approach will significantly improve the safety of monitoring and fighting wildfires, as well as organizing a modern reliable and independent decision support system, thereby significantly improving the quality and economic efficiency of forest fire fighting. The necessary changes are proposed that are appropriate to overcome the existing technological gap between Russia and the leading countries in the field of informatization of fighting fires in the natural environment.

To take the students attention in physics lectures is always a challenge. The projectile motion is not an exception. Then, study of popcorn motion can be a way to introduce and motivate the students in this subject. In this work, the popcorn flight, caused by the popping process was recorded by a cellular phone and analyzed frame by frame. Then, the drag coefficient (CD) of vertically moving popcorns is determined and its dependency with the vertical velocity (vy) and with the Reynolds number (Re) is explored. Our results show that CD increases exponentially when vy decreases. Also, CD shows higher uncertainties when the popcorn is close to its maximum vertical trajectory. The dependency of CD with Re shows that the popcorn flights are governed, mainly, by a laminar flow motion (Re ＜ 2000).

The pandemic of COVID-19 has triggered awareness of the significant role of distance learning systems. Implementing science experiments, involving observation and measurement, requires more complex steps when conducted remotely online. An innovative method that can be used to address this issue is the combination of experimental demonstrations and video analysis. This article reports a training activity for the design and implementation of physics experiments using the video analysis software, Tracker, to improve the competence of physics teachers in conducting experiments through distance learning systems. The training was conducted through tutorials, demonstrations, practice sessions, work instructions, and online discussions. The impact of the training was measured by evaluating pre- and post-training questionnaires. The results indicate that the training can enhance participants' insights and competencies. This training provides an alternative solution for conducting laboratory experiments during face-to-face learning activity restrictions.

This study focused on using video analysis to track the acceleration due to gravity and damping of a pendulum. The video tracker analysis software was proven effective in collecting data from several physics experiments. This study offered new insights on using a tracker and combining it with MS Excel to generate a damping graph. A pendulum was set in motion and recorded with a high-speed camera from the iPhone 13. The footage was then analyzed using tracker video analysis, modeling software, and Microsoft Excel to determine the amplitude and frequency of the pendulum's motion. At the same time, the other variables were measured using traditional tools (e.g., the length of the yarn using a meter ruler). The measured values were then used to calculate the acceleration due to gravity and the damping constant of the system. The results showed that the acceleration due to gravity was consistent with the average accepted value, while the damping constant accurately represented what was seen from the generated graph. Overall, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of video analysis in tracking the behavior of physical systems and its potential applications in various fields.

ABSTRAK Studi literatur menunjukkan bahwa terdapat konsep fisika dalam permainan tradisional yang dapat diintegrasikan ke dalam pembelajaran fisika. Konsep-konsep ini dieksplorasi melalui penelitian deskriptif dan eksperimental. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi dan menganalisis konsep-konsep fisika pada permainan rakyat Bengkulu berbantuan software Tracker khususnya pada permainan ‘Lompek Kodok’. Lompek Kodok adalah permainan yang dimainkan dengan cara melempar pecahan keramik kemudian melompat dengan satu kaki pada kotak yang telah digambar di tanah. Permainan ini mirip dengan permainan ‘Engklek’ di Pulau Jawa. Dibantu dengan software Tracker, dapat diketahui kecepatan minimal melempar agar pecahan keramik masuk ke setiap kotak. Permainan 'Lompek Kodok' dapat digunakan dalam pembelajaran fisika khususnya gerak parabola. These concepts are explored through descriptive and experimental research. This research will explore and analyze physics concepts in Bengkulu folk games assisted by video tracker software, especially in game ‘Lompek Kodok’. Lompek Kodok is a game played by throwing ceramic shards and then jumping with one foot on a square that has been drawn on the ground. This game is similar to game ‘Engklek’ in Java. Assisted by Tracker software, minimum throwing speed can be found out so that ceramic shards enter each square. The game 'Lompek Kodok' can be used in physics lessons, especially projectile motion. Teachers can design student worksheets by carrying out scientific investigation activities, recording these activities, and analyzing them using a video tracker software. Vehicular Ad-hoc NETwork (VANET) safety applications allow vehicles to exchange messages with surrounding vehicles periodically to improve the contextual awareness of the drivers about the driving environment which significantly enhances traffic safety. However, these messages usually contain sensitive information such as the Spatio-temporal information of each vehicle which might be exploited by malicious entities for various purposes (e.g. monitoring the vehicle for a long period and breaching the driver's privacy). Researchers have proposed different schemes to enhance the privacy level of drivers and their vehicles alike. However, most of the existing schemes have a negative impact on safety applications; they stop broadcasting messages for a period which increases the chance of accidents. In this paper, we propose a Safety-related Privacy Scheme (SRPS) that enhances both the privacy and safety of VANET safety applications by reducing silent periods without degrading the privacy level. While the vehicle continues monitoring neighbour vehicles if an accident is expected, it exits the silent period and starts sharing its location with its neighbour vehicles. The SRPS consists of two algorithms based on the status of the vehicle (i.e. silent vs. active). These algorithms use a multi-target tracking algorithm to search for an effective context to change pseudonyms and avoid potential accidents. Four simulators are used to implement SRPS. The latter has been compared with five pseudonym-changing schemes (PPC, RSP, CSP, SLOW, and CAPS). Several soiling mitigation solutions and cleaning techniques have been developed to maintain high efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panels. First of its kind, the investigation of the adaptability of the cleaning systems to solar trackers has been performed. The majority of these systems are dedicated to fixed installations whereas only few systems that can be adapted to solar trackers are presented in the updated cleaning systems background. For this reason, this paper presents an innovative approach which consists of combining trackers with an integrated cleaning system that has been designed. Based on the conducted experimental study, a maximum of 7% in soiling losses has been found for the PV generator of 4 kWp equipped with a dual-axis tracker installed in Rabat-Morocco over almost 1 year. Consequently, a reduced cleaning prototype has been realized and tested to evaluate the energy recovery based on the performed cleaning. The automatic cleaning has presented a similar efficiency with the manual cleaning with a slight difference of 0.95 pp and an increase of energy of 11.5% in the arid region. Through the economic analysis carried out taking into account the gain in energy production, the automatic cleaning cost was 0.14 USD/kWh. It has been found that the cleaning technique based on the telescopic arm would be more effective if the tracker is installed in an arid region where soiling is higher than Rabat. The main objective of this project is the construction of rehabilitation devices for upper limbs based on the physical analysis of the predetermined movements that are executed in a rehabilitation therapy. This development intends to apply three methods of trajectory generation which allow to obtain different solutions for each of the methods used. Solutions, which will be analyzed and tested in order to build a rehabilitation device that complies with established movements and trajectories to generate a total or partial rehabilitation. Three mechanical rehabilitation devices capable of exercising an optimal movement that will try to reduce the repetitive and continuous work performed by health professionals in rehabilitation therapies are obtained. To compensate for the lack of fossil fuel-based energy production systems, hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) would be a useful solution. Investigating different design conditions and components would help industry professionals, engineers, and policymakers in producing and designing optimal systems. In this article, different tracker systems, including vertical, horizontal, and two-axis trackers in an off-grid HRES that includes photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), diesel generator (Gen), and battery (Bat) are considered. The goal is to find the optimum (OP) combination of an HRES in seven locations (Loc) in Saudi Arabia. The proposed load demand is 988.97 kWh/day, and the peak load is 212.34 kW. The results of the cost of energies (COEs) range between 0.108 to 0.143 USD/kWh. Secondly, the optimum size of the PV panels with different trackers is calculated. The HRES uses 100 kW PV in combination with other components. Additionally, the size of the PVs where 100% PV panels are used to reach the load demand in the selected locations is found. Finally, two sensitivity analyses (Sens) on the proposed PV and tracker costs and solar GHIs are conducted. The main goal of the article is to find the most cost-effective tracker system under different conditions while considering environmental aspects such as the CO2 social penalty. The results show an increase of 35% in power production from PV (compared to not using a tracker) when using a two-axis tracker system. However, it is not always cost-effective. The increase in power production when using vertical and horizontal trackers (HT) is also significant. The findings show that introducing a specific tracker for all locations depends on renewable resources such as wind speed and solar GHI, as well as economic inputs. El objetivo principal de este proyecto es la construcción de dispositivos de rehabilitación para miembros superiores con base al análisis físico y morfológico de los movimientos predeterminados que se ejecutan en una terapia de rehabilitación. Para este desarrollo se aplicaron tres métodos de generación de trayectorias, analíticos y gráfico, los cuales permiten obtener diversas soluciones para cada uno de los métodos utilizados; soluciones que son analizadas y comprobadas con el fin de construir un dispositivo de rehabilitación que cumpla con movimientos y trayectorias establecidas para generar una rehabilitación total o parcial del paciente que lo requiera. Se obtienen tres dispositivos mecánicos de rehabilitación capaces de ejercer un movimiento optimo orientado a disminuir el trabajo repetitivo y continúo realizado por los profesionales de la salud en terapias de rehabilitación.

In order to maintain its outstanding performance under the challenging conditions brought by the high-luminosity LHC, the CMS collaboration is preparing the production of a new outer tracker detector. The upgraded detector modules will feature two silicon sensors and the ability of reading out correlated clusters, or stubs, compatible with high transverse momentum particles at the full 40 MHz collision rate. With the detector design being finalised and mass production planned to start during the second half of 2024, the scalability of the readout system and the study of the commissioning and characterisation of the detector in realistic conditions are ever-more pressing. In this context, a joint beam-test was organised in collaboration with the MUonE collaboration where twelve modules were placed in an asynchronous muon beam line reaching particle rates of about 50 MHz, with the full stub stream being recorded to disk triggerless. The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will achieve unparallelled instantaneous luminosity, leading to approximately 200 proton–proton interactions during a bunch crossing. The existing ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced by an entirely silicon-based system known as the Inner Tracker (ITk). The ITk's innermost section will incorporate a cutting-edge pixel detector with diverse silicon sensor technologies being used across the five barrel and end-cap layers. As initial modules have been assembled with the prototype ITkPix readout chip, a variety of aspects are under investigation. These range from production-related ones such as bump bonding, to assembly methods of dedicated wire-bond mechanical protection and layout-related aspects such as the distribution of data links amongst several chips and modules. Research utilizing the sub-micron three-dimensional spatial resolution of nuclear emulsion detectors has been expanding in various fields, triggered by the development of automated emulsion scanning technology. This paper describes a new production system capable of supplying several thousand square meters of nuclear emulsion film per year. The development and introduction of improved emulsion gel, knife coating, and drying equipment have enabled the mass production of double-side coated nuclear emulsion films with thick emulsion layers suitable for full-area scanning and analysis. BackgroundPersonalized healthcare technology has grown explosively through the use of portable and smart monitoring devices for diagnosis. The objective of this study was to determine the practicality and usability of the EquimetreTM fitness tracker on camels in comparison to the standard base-apex system in normal and clinical cases.MethodsFive apparently healthy adult camels, five clinical adult cases and two clinical calves were enrolled in this study. The camels were equipped with two monitoring systems: EquimetreTM and a standard base-apex electrocardiogarphy. Each tracing was evaluated for the normal ECG variable's measure, including heart rate beats per min, P-R, QRS, R-R, Q-T, S-T intervals, and P-R and S-T segments in seconds. The amplitudes for P, Q, R, S, and T-peaks were evaluated in millivolts.ResultsEquimetreTM showed stability on ECG tracing with less movement artifacts compared with the standard base-apex system. Different polarities were observed for the P-waves and T-waves between the standard base-apex system and EquimetreTM. Both devices showed perfect agreement for heart rate (ICC = 1.00, P ≥ 0.0001, 95% = 1.00–1.00) in healthy and clinical adults. A good correlation was observed for the R-R interval between the devices in healthy and clinical adults. A moderate correlation was observed between the devices for Q-peak in clinical adults, with no correlation in clinical calves.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated acceptable ECG measurements between the standard base-apex and EquimetreTM device. Formation of the skills of conducting an experiment and analyzing its results during laboratory work in natural science has always been an important didactic problem, which has significantly increased in the conditions of distance and mixed learning. The study of approaches to the effective use of software for the analysis of video recordings of observations of real physical processes and phenomena is one of the tasks of instrumental digital didactics. The affordable and regularly updated software Tracker: Video Analysis and Modeling Tool is a popular didactic tool for the analysis of physical quantities based on the processing of static and dynamic images followed by comparison with the corresponding mathematical model. The rules for creating educational videos suitable for analysis in a digital environment are summarized. On the examples of laboratory classes on many topics of physics (mechanics, hydrodynamics, molecular and atomic physics, and optics) and astronomy, the general features of creating video recordings, laboratory works, and problem tasks based on video analysis are shown. The STEM laboratory of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has created numerous reference videos about physical experiments and the rules for their use; a collection of video tasks was also created; innovative methods of educational physical experiments were developed. The methods of video analysis were tested during distance and mixed education in the conditions of threats, also in formal and informal education formats, such as the summer science school for students and the All-Ukrainian natural science online tournament "Open Natural Science Demonstration". Instrumental digital didactics is a component of training courses for teachers and is regularly discussed at seminars and conferences on science education. In this paper, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using digital technologies to study the behavior of rubber balloons. The experiment to study the behavior of balloons was presented in a new way using the Vernier measuring system, Logger Pro 3 software, Tracker and Google Sheets. Video analysis is carried out for one-dimensional motion and collision experiments using Tracker. Physical variables, i.e. displacement, time, and velocity, can be deducted from the analysis and allows one to connect them to the equation of motion and energy conservation. Corresponding equations of motions are given without neglecting the effect of friction and air resistance. Their solutions are used as models for data-fitting purposes. The fitting results allow one to find the surface friction coefficient and the air resistance parameter for the first experiment and friction for the second experiment. These experiments and analyses can be implemented for at least sophomore-level physics in a university. However, if simplified by removing all resistant parts, they can be used for high-school or first-year students in a university. The video files can be distributed to students for online courses that are prevalently ongoing worldwide due to the COVID pandemic. Students can observe the experiments and analyse data at home. In creating constructivist inquiry-based active classrooms, the teacher has to resort to new teaching methods. To make mechanics concepts more meaningful and visible, we propose using an open-source software—Tracker—which can be easily downloaded. Fundamental concepts of mechanics can be easily taught by visualizing and analyzing the motion of the objects in the Tracker software environment. This article discusses some mechanical problems and how they can be visualized and solved using Tracker software. This software can benefit high school students to college students in analyzing different motions. This method is also known as the video-based analysis (VBA) method. This method can widely be used across different problems of mechanics and can be helpful in the effective teaching-learning process. Background: Physical inactivity is a global issue for cancer survivors. Wearable activity trackers are promising to address physical inactivity by providing real-time feedback on physical activity and offering opportunities for self-monitoring and goal setting. Meta-analysis has reported the effects of interventions that incorporate wearable activity trackers on improved physical inactivity and related health outcomes (eg, BMI, anxiety and depression, and self-rated health status). However, wearable activity trackers were often used as an adjunct to physical activity interventions, and the effectiveness of wearable activity trackers alone is unknown., Objective: This study aims to determine the association of wearable activity trackers with physical activity and health outcomes in patients with cancer., Methods: Data from 957 cancer survivors from the Health Information National Trends Survey-Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (HINTS-SEER) were analyzed. The outcome variables examined were time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity, weekly frequency of strength training, BMI, anxiety and depression levels, and self-assessed health status. The primary independent variable was whether cancer survivors had used wearable activity trackers within the past 12 months. Design-based linear regression for continuous outcome variables and ordinal logistic regression for ordinal outcome variables were conducted to determine the associations after controlling for sociodemographic, cancer-related, and health-related factors. All data analyses accounted for the complex survey design and sample weights., Results: Only 29% of cancer survivors reported wearable activity tracker use. Bivariate analyses showed that younger age (P<.001), higher education (P=.04), higher income (P<.001), and an employed status (P<.001) were significantly associated with wearable activity tracker use. Wearable activity tracker use was significantly associated with higher time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity (adjusted =37.94, 95% CI 8.38-67.5; P=.01), more frequent strength training per week (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.50, 95% CI 1.09-2.06; P=.01), and better self-rated health status (adjusted OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.09-2.29; P=.01), but not with BMI or anxiety and depression., Conclusions: This study suggests that the uptake of wearable activity trackers is low and highlights the digital divide among patients with cancer.
