South-Eastern Spain is a key locality of the Western Mediterranean to unravel the origin of post-collisional magmatism and its relationships with the multi-stage evolution of the upper mantle in complex geodynamic settings. This study is focused on the Plio-Pleistocene post-collisional intraplate-like alkali basalts cropping out in the Tallante area (South-Eastern Spain) that are erupted in a region previously characterised by subduction related calc-alkaline to ultrapotassic (i.e., lamproitic) volcanism. Tallante alkali basalts represent a volcanic episode similar to other contemporary small volume intraplate volcanic occurrences of Western-Central Europe and North Africa, which are believed to derive from a Common Mantle Reservoir characterising the entire Circum Mediterranean asthenosphere. We report new major, trace element, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data on Tallante alkali basalts, showing compositions broadly similar to the other mafic volcanic rocks derived from the Common Mantle Reservoir and thus suggesting an asthenospheric component similar to other European within plate volcanic rocks. On the other hand, specific trace element ratios, such as Ce/Pb, Nb/U, Th/Yb, along with delta207Pb/204Pb and 87Sr/86Sr, clearly indicate the involvement of an enriched, subduction-related component, with a lamproitic geochemical and isotopic flavour. The trace element ratios suggest that low melting degree magmas from the Common Mantle Reservoir infiltrated and triggered melting of the strongly metasomatised sub-continental lithospheric mantle, which produced the lamproitic magmas previously erupted in the same area. The proposed origin of Tallante alkali basalts, located along a large scale left-lateral strike-slip fault, is consistent with analytical, numerical and laboratory models indicating that narrow subduction zones such as the Gibraltar Arc are characterised by mantle inflow around the slab edges determining upwelling and adiabatic melting of the asthenospheric mantle through slab tears.

High-MgO lamproite and lamproite-like (i.e. lamprophyric) ultrapotassic rocks are recurrent in the Mediterranean and surrounding regions. They are associated in space and time with ultrapotassic shoshonites and high-K calc-alkaline rocks. This magmatism is linked with the geodynamic evolution of the westernmost sector of the Alpine-Himalayan collisional margin, which followed the closure of the Tethys Ocean. Subduction-related lamproites, lamprophyres, shoshonites and high-K calc-alkaline suites were emplaced in the Mediterranean region in the form of shallow level intrusions (e.g. plugs, dykes and laccoliths) and small volume lava flows, with very subordinate pyroclastic rocks, starting from the Oligocene, in the Western Alps (northern Italy), through the Late Miocene in Corsica (southern France) and in Murcia-Almeria (southeastern Spain), to the Plio-Pleistocene in Southern Tuscany and Northern Latium (central Italy), in the Balkan peninsula (Serbia and Macedonia) and in the Western Anatolia (Turkey). The ultrapotassic rocks are mostly lamprophyric, but olivine latitic lavas with a clear lamproitic affinity are also found, as well as dacitic to trachytic differentiated products. Lamproite-like rocks range from slightly silica under-saturated to silica over-saturated composition, have relatively low Al2O3, CaO and Na2O contents, resulting in plagioclase-free parageneses, and consist of abundant K-feldspar, phlogopite, diopsidic clinopyroxene and highly forsteritic olivine. Leucite is generally absent, and it is rarely found only in the groundmasses of Spanish lamproites. Mediterranean lamproites and associated rocks share an extreme enrichment in many incompatible trace elements and depletion in High Field Strength Elements and high, and positively correlated Th/La and Sm/La ratios. They have radiogenic Sr and unradiogenic Nd isotope compositions, high 207Pb over 206Pb and high time-integrated 232Th/238U. Their composition requires an originally depleted lithospheric mantle source metasomatized by at least two different agents: (1) a high Th/La and Sm/La (i.e. SALATHO) component deriving from lawsonite-bearing, ancient crustal domains likely hosted in mélanges formed during the diachronous collision of the northward drifting continental slivers from Gondwana; (2) a K-rich component derived from a recent subduction and recycling of siliciclastic sediments. These metasomatic melts produced a lithospheric mantle source characterized by network of felsic and phlogopite-rich veins, respectively. Geothermal readjustment during post-collisional events induced progressive melting of the different types of veins and the surrounding peridotite generating the entire compositional spectrum of the observed magmas. In this complex scenario, orogenic Mediterranean lamproites represent rocks that characterize areas that were affected by multiple Wilson cycles, as observed in the Alpine-Himalayan Realm.

We report laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements of the trace element contents of the two naturally occurring quasicrystalline minerals, Al63Cu24Fe13 icosahedrite and Al71Ni24Fe5 decagonite, from their type locality in the Khatyrka meteorite. The isolated quasicrystal fragments were mounted separately from any matrix and are larger than the laser beam diameter. When the elements are sorted in order of volatility, a systematic and unique pattern emerges in both bulk natural quasicrystal specimens. They are highly depleted compared to primitive solar system materials (chondritic meteorites) in moderately refractory elements (those with 50% condensation temperatures near 1350-1300 K; V, Co, Mg, Cr) and significantly enriched in moderately volatile elements (those with 50% condensation temperatures between 1250 and 500 K; Sb, B, Ag, Sn, Bi). We compare the chondrite-normalized trace element patterns and ratios of the quasicrystals to those of scoriaceous cosmic spherules and other meteoritic components. The nonmonotonic shapes of the chondrite-normalized trace element patterns in both icosahedrite and decagonite are incompatible with a single condensation process from the gas of the solar nebula. Previous transmission electron microscopy studies show that the natural quasicrystals contain 3-5 vol % of silicate and oxide nanoparticle inclusions, which we consider to be the main host of the measured trace elements. On this basis, we construct a three-stage model for the formation of the quasicrystals and their inclusions: a high-temperature condensation stage and a low-temperature vapor-fractionation stage to make nanoparticles, followed by a third stage that leads to the formation of quasicrystals incorporating the two different types of nanoparticles and their incorporation into the CV chondrite parent body of the Khatyrka meteorite.

In this paper we report an experimental study to assess the process of Sr-isotope uptake from the soil and its transfer to the grapevine and then to the wine made through micro-vinification. The experimental work has been carried out with a deep control of the boundary conditions (i.e., type of soil, geologic substratum, ground water supply, etc.) on 11 selected vine-plant sites over a period of four harvest years. Sr-isotopes have been determined on grape-bunches, grapevine sap, on the bioavailable fraction of the soil, on bulk soil, and on the rocks of the substratum. No significant Sr-isotope variability has been observed among micro-vinifications from different harvest years. A slight but significant Sr-isotope variability occurred among wines from rows embedded on different soil type. The Sr-isotope data on micro-vinifications well match those of grapevine sap and bioavailable fraction of soils, all of them falling well within the whole geological range of the bedrock, despite an evident decoupling between bioavailable fraction, whole soils and bedrocks does exist. This decoupling has been ascribed to differential geochemical behaviour of minerals in response to pedogenetic processes. The findings of our experiments indicate that the biological activity of the vine is not able to change the original 87Sr/86Sr composition up-taken from the bio-available fraction of the soil. Thus, the 87Sr/86Sr of the wine is an unadulterated feature of the terroir.

Most geobarometers use chemical compositions of minerals and their host melt to estimate crystallization pressures. Crystal structural parameters such as cell and site volumes are not usually considered despite their known sensitivity to pressure. Here, we compare two clinopyroxene geobarometers based upon electron microprobe analysis alone and coupled with single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The case study is the plumbing system of Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico), which consists of three distinct magma reservoirs in upper, middle and lower crustal depths, represented by three compositionally and texturally distinct clinopyroxene populations (T1, Mg# core 82, and low-Ca with a lower wollastonite component). These clinopyroxenes are augites of limited compositional variability, although yielding a significant increase in cell (V cell) and M1 site (V M1) volumes from low-Ca and T2 core clinopyroxenes to T1 (core and rim) and T2 (rim) clinopyroxenes. This variation is not due to chemical or temperature effects but is linked to their depth of crystallization. The application of the geobarometer based on chemical composition alone is unable to distinguish the three different reservoirs postulated on volcanological and petrological grounds. In contrast, the application of the geobarometer based on both structural parameters and chemical composition yields a remarkable correlation between the calculated cell volume and the estimated depth of crystallization of the different clinopyroxenes, including core to rim differences. These results have twofold implications. First, the determination of the structural parameters of clinopyroxenes is the only method to resolve the actual distribution of Mg, Fe2+, Fe3+ in the M1 and M2 structural sites and, given the sensitivity of cell and site volumes to pressure, permits to improve geobarometric estimates in volcanic plumbing systems. Second, the quantitative determination of the crystallization depth of the different clinopyroxenes has permitted to rescale the depth of the three different reservoirs in the plumbing system of the Popocatepetl Volcanic Complex located from ~30 km b.s.l. (low-Ca clinopyroxene) to ~18 km b.s.l. (T2 clinopyroxene core) and ~10-0 km b.s.l. (T1 clinopyroxene core and rim, T2 clinopyroxene rim) within the crustal structure of the Morelos platform. This provides further support to the complex plumbing system of the Popocatepetl Volcanic Complex consisting of polybaric storage layers of variable interconnected and interacting transient magma reservoirs.

An analytical protocol for high-precision, in situ microscale isotopic investigations is presented here, which combines the use of a high-performing mechanical microsampling device and high-precision TIMS measurements on micro-Sr samples, allowing for excellent results both in accuracy and precision. The present paper is a detailed methodological description of the whole analytical procedure from sampling to elemental purification and Sr-isotope measurements. The method offers the potential to attain isotope data at the microscale on a wide range of solid materials with the use of minimally invasive sampling. In addition, we present three significant case studies for geological and life sciences, as examples of the various applications of microscale 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios, concerning (i) the pre-eruptive mechanisms triggering recent eruptions at Nisyros volcano (Greece), (ii) the dynamics involved with the initial magma ascent during Eyjafjallajökull volcano’s (Iceland) 2010 eruption, which are usually related to the precursory signals of the eruption, and (iii) the environmental context of a MIS 3 cave bear, Ursus spelaeus. The studied cases show the robustness of the methods, which can be also be applied in other areas, such as cultural heritage, archaeology, petrology, and forensic sciences.

Steady-state volcanic activity implies equilibrium between the rate of magma replenishment and eruption of compositionally homogeneous magmas, lasting for tens to thousands of years in an open conduit system. The Present-day activity of Stromboli volcano (Aeolian Islands, Southern Italy) has long been recognised as typical of a steady-state volcano, with a shallow magmatic reservoir (highly porphyritic or hp-magma) continuously refilled by more mafic magma (with low phenocryst content or lp-magma) at a constant rate and accompanied by mixing, crystallisation and eruption. This study is based upon a stratigraphic and structural revision of a Middle Jurassic-Upper Cretaceous mostly continental succession exposed between Boumalne Dades and Tinghir (Southern Morocco), and aims at reconstructing the relation among sedimentary, tectonic and magmatic processes that affected a portion of the Central High Atlas domains. Basalts interbedded in the continental deposits have been sampled in the two studied sites for petrographic, geochemical and radiogenic isotope analyses. The results of this study provide: (1) a robust support to the local stratigraphic revision and to a regional lithostratigraphic correlation based on new 40Ar-39Ar ages (ca. 120 Ma) of the intervening basalts; (2) clues for reconstructing the relation between magma emplacement in a structural setting characterized by syn-depositional crustal shortening pre-dating the convergent tectonic inversion of the Atlasic rifted basins; (3) a new and intriguing scenario indicating that the Middle Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous basalts of the Central High Atlas could represent the first signal of the present-day Canary Islands mantle plume impinging, flattening, and delaminating the base of the Moroccan continental lithosphere since the Jurassic, and successively dragged passively by the Africa plate motion to NE. The tectono-sedimentary and magmatic events discussed in this paper are preliminarily extended from their local scale into a peculiar geodynamic setting of a continental plate margin flanked by the opening and spreading Central Atlantic and NW Tethys oceans. It is suggested that during the late Mesozoic this setting created an unprecedented condition of intraplate stress for concurrent crustal shortening, related mountain uplift, and thinning of continental lithosphere.

The active volcano of Ischia, the well-known island off-shore the city of Naples, has had a discontinuous volcanic activity characterised by caldera-forming paroxysmal eruptions, lava flows, and lava domes for >150 kyr. The overall geochemical composition of erupted magmas includes shoshonite, latite, and trachyte/trachyphonolite. In a complementary study, we demonstrated that the evolution of Ischia trachytes with Sr 10 wt.% outcrop a few kilometers apart at Procida island, and suggest that the evolved latites and trachytes at Ischia might have originated by crustal assimilation processes affecting Procida basalts. However, Energy Constrained Assimilation and Fractional Crystallisation modelling sets robust constraints against this hypothesis and provide geochemical arguments for a pristine mantle-derived radiogenic isotope signature for trachytes and latites, implying that they also evolved from parental basaltic magmas in a closed-system environment akin to trachytes with Sr

WWARN Artemisinin based Combination Therapy (ACT) Africa Baseline Study Group; International audience; Background: Artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum has emerged in the Greater Mekong sub-region and poses a major global public health threat. Slow parasite clearance is a key clinical manifestation of reduced susceptibility to artemisinin. This study was designed to establish the baseline values for clearance in patients from Sub-Saharan African countries with uncomplicated malaria treated with artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). Methods: A literature review in PubMed was conducted in March 2013 to identify all prospective clinical trials (uncontrolled trials, controlled trials and randomized controlled trials), including ACTs conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa, between 1960 and 2012. Individual patient data from these studies were shared with the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) and pooled using an a priori statistical analytical plan. Factors affecting early parasitological response were investigated using logistic regression with study sites fitted as a random effect. The risk of bias in included studies was evaluated based on study design, methodology and missing data. Results: In total, 29,493 patients from 84 clinical trials were included in the analysis, treated with artemether-lumefantrine (n = 13,664), artesunate-amodiaquine (n = 11,337) and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (n = 4,492). The overall parasite clearance rate was rapid. The parasite positivity rate (PPR) decreased from 59.7 % (95 % CI: 54.5–64.9) on day 1 to 6.7 % (95 % CI: 4.8–8.7) on day 2 and 0.9 % (95 % CI: 0.5–1.2) on day 3. The 95th percentile of observed day 3 PPR was 5.3 %. Independent risk factors predictive of day 3 positivity were: high baseline parasitaemia (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.16 (95 % CI: 1.08–1.25); per 2-fold increase in parasite density, P 37.5 °C) (AOR = 1.50 (95 % CI: 1.06–2.13), P = 0.022); severe anaemia (AOR = 2.04 (95 % CI: 1.21–3.44), P = 0.008); areas of low/moderate transmission setting (AOR = 2.71 (95 % CI: 1.38–5.36), P = 0.004); and treatment with the loose formulation of artesunate-amodiaquine (AOR = 2.27 (95 % CI: 1.14–4.51), P = 0.020, compared to dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine). Conclusions: The three ACTs assessed in this analysis continue to achieve rapid early parasitological clearance across the sites assessed in Sub-Saharan Africa. A threshold of 5 % day 3 parasite positivity from a minimum sample size of 50 patients provides a more sensitive benchmark in Sub-Saharan Africa compared to the current recommended threshold of 10 % to trigger further investigation of artemisinin susceptibility.

La ricostituzione della filiera produttiva e la tracciabilità dell’intero percorso degli alimenti dalla produzione alla vendita sono divenuti una parte essenziale della ricerca nel campo dell’agroalimentare, soprattutto per gli alimenti di pregio. Tra questi il vino è sicuramente il prodotto che è stato oggetto di maggiore attenzione, anche in considerazione del progressivo sviluppo dei marchi DOC e DOCG e dell’importanza economica assunta dal concetto di Terroir, che ne definisce l’inscindibile legame con il territorio come elemento determinante per la sua valorizzazione economica. La comunità scientifica e gli organismi internazionali hanno dedicato grande attenzione alla messa a punto di metodologie scientifiche e tecnologie idonee alla certificazione di qualità dei vini di pregio. Le analisi dei rapporti isotopici di elementi leggeri (idrogeno, carbonio e ossigeno) sono diffusamente utilizzate per il controllo dell’autenticità del vino e sono state inserite in regolamenti CEE e nazionali. Quest’analisi non è tuttavia risolutiva per il riconoscimento e la tracciabilità geografica del vino a causa della loro forte dipendenza da fattori climatici locali e dall’andamento atmosferico stagionale. Per questo motivo la ricerca si è indirizzata verso lo studio di elementi caratteristici del sistema substrato/suolo di provenienza con l’obiettivo di risalire dalla composizione chimico-fisica del prodotto vino al suo areale (territorio) d’origine. Infatti la composizione chimica e isotopica della matrice inorganica è legata alla natura del suolo di impianto della vigna, che eredita le proprie caratteristiche composizionali e qualitative direttamente dal substrato geologico e dunque può rappresentare la sua impronta digitale e fornire uno strumento efficace per la sua tracciabilità.
