A recent study published in Conservation Letters suggests a surprising solution to the problem of invasive cane toads in Australia. The introduction of these toads in the 1930s has had devastating effects on the country's ecosystems, particularly on the yellow-spotted monitor lizard population. However, researchers have found that by releasing young cane toads in areas where monitors are present before the adult toads invade, the lizards have a chance to learn to avoid the more toxic adults. This strategy has shown promising results in preserving monitor populations and is being adopted by Indigenous groups and wildlife management agencies. While this approach is encouraging, further research is needed to develop effective methods for protecting other animals and ecosystems from invasive species. [Extracted from the article]
