This essay examines the rhetoricity of mid-twentieth-century American time capsules. Through an examination of the objects included within the Westinghouse time capsules prepared for the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs and the Crypt of Civilization at Oglethorpe University, this essay argues that time capsules are rhetorical objects predicated on haunting. The capsules' objects of common use, reproductions of the body, and sound recordings evoke the ghosts of their original era and provide new means of understanding attempts at cross-temporal communication. 2020 saw a perfect storm of events. It began with the COVID-19 pandemic that swept across the globe, followed by waves of racial unrest, economic distress, and political turbulence even as wildfires, hurricanes and tropical storms tore across our region. It was clear to all of us that we were living through sweeping historical change compressed into a short space of time. This article describes the creation of Beyond 2020: Living History, a public history project at the University of Texas at Austin that aimed to respond to the events of the year. It charts the development of the project and how it came to diverge from its original design in productive ways underpinned not by an attempt to impose order or build hierarchy, the traditional tools of historical analysis, but rather by a willingness to relinquish control to create a shared space for our university community. To create context, the study first recounts, in a nutshell, the emigration history of Hungarian Americans and the main features of their American integration. In addition to discussing the specific fieldwork goals and experiences, the article seeks to present the theoretical background of the fieldwork concept of the research. The author began his research in the United States in 2006, where he has been regularly returning to conduct ethnographic fieldwork ever since. From the great emigration wave that began at the end of the nineteenth century up until today, he examines the history, institutional networks, and socio-ethnographic aspects of Hungarian communities on the East Coast and in the Midwest, including acculturation, identity change, and contacts with the homeland. When developing his fieldwork concept, for his guiding principle he chose to combine the individual identity construction model with capsule theory. Hungarian American emigrants who have been forced to switch cultures have been living their lives in a “time and mentality capsule”. The part brought from the old country resides inside the capsule, while everything outside is part of the new environment. This duality can be complemented by the potential role of the local community, which directly surrounds the individual in the alien new country. Examination of this particular capsule is only possible in the field. In the course of fieldwork, the main question becomes: to what extent do the adopted patterns of behavior, the desire to meet American social expectations, and the efforts that are internally controlled and realized, allow a look into these capsules? Such fieldwork is characterized by a duality of scheduled appointments pre-arranged with prospective informants, and spontaneous field situations. In the Hungarian communities of industrial towns, fieldwork consisted predominantly (almost exclusively) of the “appointment” type of data collection, while in the case of former mining settlements on the brink of extinction, spontaneously developing ethnographic data collection was more typical. Participation in events linked to dates and venues, data collecting at these occasions, and getting acquainted with event participants for later interviewing is the third option besides the fieldwork situations mentioned above. Finally, the paper attempts to demonstrate through several examples of the ways in which fieldwork can enrich the information gained from documents with additional data, tangible memorabilia, and the memories related to them. Recent advances in data storage technologies, such as optical storage and DNA storage, allow data storage for timescales of millions to billions of years. Alongside these developments, initiatives such as Lunar Mission One, the Long Now Foundation and the Human Document Project have promoted the long-term storage of data in order to foster public engagement and to preserve important data for future generations. However, proper concepts for long-term data storage in space are currently missing which match to the needs of stakeholders via the newly available technology. This paper explores the rationales for data storage over millions to billions of years in space and develops three ‘time capsule’ concepts addressing specific stakeholder needs. First, existing stakeholders are identified and categorized with respect to their motivation. Stakeholder needs are interpreted from statements of motivation. As key motivations, “encouraging global public engagement”, “moving humanity toward becoming a dual-planet species”, “embracing and constraining the information age”, and “allowing storage of information for a very long time” are identified. These needs are then arranged hierarchically for each stakeholder and the most prevalent needs are selected. Metrics are then assigned to each need. One or more storage technologies and storage locations are recommended for each case study. A key technology for storage durations of millions to billions of years seems to be digital DNA storage. Future work aims at developing more detailed storage concepts along with the interactions with the space system into which it is going to be integrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review paper is intended to be a guideline to novices on how to conduct research on silicate melt inclusions in volcanic environments, which analytical techniques are more suitable to gather the desired data and the major pitfalls scientist may encounter. Silicate melt inclusions (SMIs) are small quantities of silicate melt that are trapped in minerals during their growth or crystallization. They contain liquids formed in equilibrium with their host minerals and therefore record the liquid line of descent of magmatic systems. Upon trapping, SMIs become ideally closed to the surrounding environment, and behave as time capsules, giving important information about processes that originated magmas and the nature of their mantle source. A melt inclusions investigation is composed of several steps: (1) a detailed petrographic study to characterize and select representative SMIs, with the aim of identifying Melt Inclusions Assemblages (MIA), the only reliable tool to assess that SMIs obey Roedder's rules and have not re-equilibrated following entrapment; (2) a careful preparation of samples for re-heating experiments and microanalysis; (3) high temperature studies in order to homogenize the SMIs and be able to perform chemical analysis; (4) interpretation of SMIs data, which should always be compared with bulk rock composition and relevant experimentally derived liquid compositions. We suggest that the search for good SMI candidates for study will be achieved by good petrographic analysis of SMIs and detailed petrographic information (size, shape, appearance, position relative to the host and other SMI within the same host). If the goal of a SMIs study is to determine volatile concentrations, assessing the relative time of trapping among SMIs is of paramount importance, as it allows understanding if the variation in volatile concentrations is consistent with a certain magmatic physical–chemical process. Researchers that choose to work with SMIs face several challenges. SMIs are not always hosted in all samples or they can be difficult to recognize (mostly due to their small size). Additionally, due several processes, such as post-entrapment crystallization, boundary layer and sampling melt heterogeneity at the micron scale, they may not be representative of the original trapped melt composition. Non-destructive analytical techniques are becoming increasingly important for the study of objects of cultural heritage interest. This study applied two techniques: X-ray fluorescence and neutron radiography, for the investigation of a capped, tubular metal object recovered from an urban construction site in Gore Park, Hamilton, Canada. The site is an urban park containing a World War I commemorative monument that underwent renovation and relocation. Historical documentation suggested that the object buried underneath the monument was a time capsule containing a paper document listing the names of 1800 Canadians who died during WWI. The purpose of this study was to assess the condition of the object, and to verify if it was what the historical records purported. XRF analysis was used to characterize the elemental composition of the metal artifact, while neutron radiography revealed that its contents were congruent with historical records and remained intact after being interred for 91 years. Results of this study demonstrate the value of non-destructive techniques for the analysis and preservation of cultural heritage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An essay on the musical time capsule of American songs by mathematics teacher David Eli Rosengard. Topics mentioned include the examine of his father's legacy not from the postmodernist historian standpoint, the sheet music versions of the songs "Tin Pan Alley" or American vernacular songs, and the collection of sheet-music on popular songs from 1920-1940. It also mentioned his parents belief on education and equality of opportunity to everyone.

The stable isotope composition of O 2 , O 3 , and H 2 O in the geological past conveys rich information on history of the Earth system. However, few compounds are known to record O 2 or O 3 isotope signals directly and reliably. Sulfate (SO 4 2 − ), a non-labile oxyanion capable of forming weakly soluble minerals, plays important roles in global sulfur, carbon, and oxygen cycles. Here I review publications on the triple oxygen isotope composition of sulfate which has been recently expanded, demonstrating that in addition to H 2 O isotope signals, sulfate can carry isotope signatures from O 2 and O 3 . I argue that sulfate, to this point, is the only compound from which direct atmospheric O 2 and O 3 signals from the distant past can be retrieved. If the current understanding of the Earth's surface oxygenation history holds, we expect to observe little to no measurable deviation from a “normal” triple oxygen isotope composition for sulfate throughout the Archean, but both positive and negative deviations since the early Proterozoic. The full potential of this unique proxy can be achieved by further study on isotope kinetics of sulfur redox cycling and by filling gaps in geological records. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In response to scholars’ recent preoccupation with the circulation of photographs, this article advocates greater attention to instances in which they have been withdrawn from circulation or reserved for future use. The focus here is on the most extreme of these closed collections, namely the time capsule, which was conceived in Philadelphia in 1876. The article shows how photography played a crucial role in the earliest time capsules – not just as their principal content, but also as a medium associated with fantasies of time travel, conceptions of posterity, and practices of storage. It then recovers the complex and contradictory political meanings of these photographic collections, thereby challenging the rhetoric of altruism and neutrality that has accompanied so many efforts to preserve photographs for future viewers and historians. Although documenting everyday activities may seem trivial, four studies reveal that creating records of the present generates unexpected benefits by allowing future rediscoveries. In Study 1, we used a time-capsule paradigm to show that individuals underestimate the extent to which rediscovering experiences from the past will be curiosity provoking and interesting in the future. In Studies 2 and 3, we found that people are particularly likely to underestimate the pleasure of rediscovering ordinary, mundane experiences, as opposed to extraordinary experiences. Finally, Study 4 demonstrates that underestimating the pleasure of rediscovery leads to time-inconsistent choices: Individuals forgo opportunities to document the present but then prefer rediscovering those moments in the future to engaging in an alternative fun activity. Underestimating the value of rediscovery is linked to people’s erroneous faith in their memory of everyday events. By documenting the present, people provide themselves with the opportunity to rediscover mundane moments that may otherwise have been forgotten. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Septarian carbonate concretions contain carbonate precipitated during progressive growth of the concretion and subsequent fracture-filling. As such, they have been used to track variations in δ 13C and δ 18O of pore waters during diagenesis and to define diagenetic zones in clastic rocks. However, the δ 18O value of the carbonate is dependent on precipitation temperature and the δ 18O value of the pore fluid from which it precipitated. Interpretations must assume one of these parameters, both of which are highly variable through time in diagenetic settings. Carbonate clumped isotopes of the cement can provide independent estimates of temperature of precipitation, allowing the pore-water δ 18O to be back-calculated. Here, we use this technique on carbonate concretions and fracture fills of the Upper Cretaceous Prairie Canyon Member, Mancos Shale, Colorado. We sampled concretions from two permeable horizons separated by a 5 m shale layer, with one permeable horizon containing concretions with septarian fractures. We show cores precipitated at cooler temperatures (31 °C, ∼660 m burial depth) than the rims (68 °C (∼1980 m burial depth) and relate that to the δ 13Ccarbonate values to suggest the concretion core precipitated in the methanogenic zone, with increasing input from thermogenically produced CO2. The two concretion-bearing horizons have different back-calculated δ 18Oporewater values (mean and 1.13‰ VSMOW) for cements formed at the same temperature and similar δ 13C values, suggesting the shale layer present between the two horizons acted as a barrier to fluid mixing. Additionally, the δ 18Ocarbonate of the septarian fractures ( VPBD) are due to precipitation at high temperatures (102 to 115 °C) from a fluid with a mean δ 18Oporewater of 0.32‰ (VSMOW). Therefore, we can tie in the cementation history of the formation to temporal and spatial variations in δ 18Oporewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a brief article, the author discusses the launch of the EchoStar XVI communications satellite on November 20, 2012. More specifically, the author notes that attached to the satellite is a gold-plated disc onto which are etched 100 images designed to be atomically stable and archival for billions of years. A list of the 100 images is presented.

The article discusses how Florida Department of State Division of Library and Information Services honors Viva Florida with a time capsule project for each county and municipal library. It highlights how some libraries honor five centuries of Florida such as Lee County Library System that created a display to promote Viva 500. Although the term was coined at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, time capsules date back to the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, when autographs, photographs, and other artifacts were sealed in various cities as tributes to the bourgeois elite. These memorial safes and chests, while related to cornerstone deposits, were inspired by new concerns about the proliferation and decay of paper records, the inadequacy of monuments, and the specter of class apocalypse. But amid mounting labor unrest, they proved contentious, provoking widespread criticism and inspiring fictional reappropriations by authors including Mark Twain and the socialist George Allan England. The article presents an overview of a workshop demonstrated at the 7th "Gestalt Journal of Australia and New Zealand" International Conference in Queenstown, New Zealand. The workshop invited participants at the conference to play with the elasticity of time to make links between how people are currently and how will they be by 2020. The workshop aims to make a time capsule that represent the current spirit of Gestalt therapy practice.
