Stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering of laser radiation in a plasma corona are outstanding issues for the inertial confinement fusion. Stimulated Raman scattering may produce absorption of a significant fraction of laser energy near the plasma quarter critical density associated with plasma cavitation and generation of hot electrons. By contrast, stimulated Brillouin scattering operates in a lower density plasma and prevents the laser light access to the absorption region. In the present paper, we report the results of analysis of competition of these two parametric instabilities with a series of one-dimensional kinetic simulations of laser-plasma interactions. By controlling the Brillouin backscattering through variation such plasma parameters as ion acoustic wave damping, divergence of the plasma expansion velocity or the laser bandwidth, we demonstrate the possibility of controlling the level of nonlinear laser absorption and scattering in a hot, weakly collisional plasma., Comment: 24 pages

Electron dynamics in the bulk of large band gap dielectric crystals induced by intense femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm is studied. With laser intensities under the ablation threshold (a few 10 TW/cm\textsuperscript{2}), electrons with unexpected energies in excess of 40-50 eV are observed by using the photoemission spectroscopy. A theoretical approach based on the Boltzmann kinetic equation including state-of-the-art modeling for various particles interactions is developed to interpret these experimental observations. A direct comparison shows that both electron heating in the bulk and a further laser field acceleration after ejection from the material contribute equivalently to the final electron energy gain. The electron heating in the bulk is shown to be significantly driven by a non-collisional process, i.e. direct multiphoton transitions between sub-bands of the conduction band. This work also sheds light on the contribution of the standard electron excitation/relaxation collisional processes, providing a new baseline to study the electron dynamics in dielectric materials and associated applications as laser material structuring., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The structure of Langmuir plasma waves carrying a finite angular orbital momentum is revised in the paraxial optics approximation. It is shown that the kinetic effects related to higher-order momenta of the electron distribution function lead to coupling of Laguerre-Gaussian modes and result in modification of the wave dispersion and damping. The theoretical analysis is compared to the three-dimensional particle-in-cell numerical simulations for a mode with orbital momentum l = 2. It is demonstrated that propagation of such a plasma wave is accompanied with generation of quasi-static axial and azimuthal magnetic fields which are consequence of the longitudinal and orbital momentum transported with the wave.

We analytically and numerically investigate the propagation of ultrashort tightly focused laser pulses in vacuum, with particular emphasis on Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We revisit the Lax series approach for forward-propagating linearly-polarized laser pulses, in order to obtain Maxwell-consistent and symmetry-preserving analytical solutions for the propagation of all field components beyond the paraxial approximation in four-dimensional geometry (space and time). We demonstrate that our solution conserves the energy, which is set by the paraxial-level term of the series. The full solution of the wave equation towards which our series converges is calculated in the Fourier space. Three-dimensional numerical simulations of ultrashort tightly-focused pulses validate our analytical development.

Powerful laser-plasma processes are explored to generate discharge currents of a few $100\,$kA in coil targets, yielding magnetostatic fields (B-fields) in excess of $0.5\,$kT. The quasi-static currents are provided from hot electron ejection from the laser-irradiated surface. According to our model, describing qualitatively the evolution of the discharge current, the major control parameter is the laser irradiance $I_{\mathrm{las}}\lambda_{\mathrm{las}}^2$. The space-time evolution of the B-fields is experimentally characterized by high-frequency bandwidth B-dot probes and by proton-deflectometry measurements. The magnetic pulses, of ns-scale, are long enough to magnetize secondary targets through resistive diffusion. We applied it in experiments of laser-generated relativistic electron transport into solid dielectric targets, yielding an unprecedented 5-fold enhancement of the energy-density flux at $60 \,\mathrm{\mu m}$ depth, compared to unmagnetized transport conditions. Interaction of a high intensity short laser pulse with near-critical plasmas allows to achieve extremely high coupling efficiency and transfer laser energy to energetic ions. One dimensional Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations are considered to detail the processes involved in the energy transfer. A confrontation of the numerical results with the theory highlights a key role played by the process of stimulated Raman scattering in the relativistic regime. The interaction of a 1 ps laser pulse (I $\sim$ 6.10$^{18}$ W.cm$^2$) with an under-critical (0.5 $n_c$) homogeneous plasma leads to a very high plasma absorption reaching 68 % of the laser pulse energy. This permits a homogeneous electron heating all along the plasma and an efficient ion acceleration at the plasma edges and in cavities., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

High-energy-density flows through dense matter are needed for effective progress in the production of laser-driven intense sources of energetic particles and radiation, in driving matter to extreme temperatures creating state regimes relevant for planetary or stellar science as yet inaccessible at the laboratory scale, or in achieving high-gain laser-driven thermonuclear fusion. When interacting at the surface of dense (opaque) targets, intense lasers accelerate relativistic electron beams which transport a significant fraction of the laser energy into the target depth. However, the overall laser-to-target coupling efficiency is impaired by the large divergence of the electron beam, intrinsic to the laser-plasma interaction. By imposing a longitudinal 600T laser-driven magnetic-field, our experimental results show guided >10MA-current of MeV-electrons in solid matter. Due to the applied magnetic field, the transported energy-density and the peak background electron temperature at the 60micron-thick targets rear surface rise by factors 5, resulting from unprecedentedly efficient guiding of relativistic electron currents., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Direct production of electron--positron pairs in two photon collisions, the Breit--Wheeler process, is one of the basic processes in the Universe. However, it has never been observed in laboratory because of absence of the intense gamma-ray sources. Laser induced synchrotron sources emission may open for the first time a way to observe this process. A feasibility of an experimental set--up using a MeV photon source is studied in this paper. We compare several $\gamma$--ray sources, estimate the expected number of electron--positron pairs and competing processes by using numerical simulations including quantum electrodynamic effects.

Quasi-static magnetic-fields up to $800\,$T are generated in the interaction of intense laser pulses ($500\,$J, $1\,$ns, $10^{17}\,$W/cm$^2$) with capacitor-coil targets of different materials. The reproducible magnetic-field peak and rise-time, consistent with the laser pulse duration, were accurately inferred from measurements with GHz-bandwidth inductor pickup coils (B-dot probes). Results from Faraday rotation of polarized optical laser light and deflectometry of energetic proton beams are consistent with the B-dot probe measurements at the early stages of the target charging, up to $t\approx 0.35\,$ns, and then are disturbed by radiation and plasma effects. The field has a dipole-like distribution over a characteristic volume of $1\,$mm$^3$, which is coherent with theoretical expectations. These results demonstrate a very efficient conversion of the laser energy into magnetic fields, thus establishing a robust laser-driven platform for reproducible, well characterized, generation of quasi-static magnetic fields at the kT-level, as well as for magnetization and accurate probing of high-energy-density samples driven by secondary powerful laser or particle beams., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

The scheme of the XUV/X-ray free electron laser based on the optical undulator created by two overlapped transverse laser beams is analyzed. A kinetic theoretical description and an ad hoc numerical model are developed to account for the finite energy spread, angular divergence and the spectral properties of the electron beam in the optical lattice. The effective increase of the critical density associated with the interaction of relativistically intense laser pulses with overcritical plasmas, known as self-induced transparency, is revisited for the case of circular polarization. A comparison of particle-in-cell simulations to the predictions of a relativistic cold-fluid model for the transparency threshold demonstrates that kinetic effects, such as electron heating, can lead to a substantial increase of the effective critical density compared to cold-fluid theory. These results are interpreted by a study of separatrices in the single-electron phase space corresponding to dynamics in the stationary fields predicted by the cold-fluid model. It is shown that perturbations due to electron heating exceeding a certain finite threshold can force electrons to escape into the vacuum, leading to laser pulse propagation. We address the problem of energy dispersion of radiation pressure accelerated (RPA) ion beams emerging from a thin (solid) target. Two different acceleration schemes, namely phase-stable acceleration and multi-stage acceleration, are considered by means of analytical modelling and one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Our investigations offer a deeper understanding of RPA and allow us to derive some guidelines for generating monoenergetic ion beams., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

Electrostatic (E) fields associated with the interaction of a well-controlled, high-power, nanosecond laser pulse with an underdense plasma are diagnosed by proton radiography. Using a current 3D wave propagation code equipped with nonlinear and nonlocal hydrodynamics, we can model the measured E-fields that are driven by the laser ponderomotive force in the region where the laser undergoes filamentation. However, strong fields of up to 110 MV/m measured in the first millimeter of propagation cannot be reproduced in the simulations. This could point to the presence of unexpected strong thermal electron pressure gradients possibly linked to ion acoustic turbulence, thus emphasizing the need for the development of full kinetic collisional simulations in order to properly model laser-plasma interaction in these strongly nonlinear conditions., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physics of Plasmas

This paper describes the first experimental demonstration of the guiding of a relativistic electron beam in a solid target using two co-linear, relativistically intense, picosecond laser pulses. The first pulse creates a magnetic field which guides the higher current fast electron beam generated by the second pulse. The effects of intensity ratio, delay, total energy and intrinsic pre-pulse are examined. Thermal and K{\alpha} imaging showed reduced emission size, increased peak emission and increased total emission at delays of 4 - 6 ps, an intensity ratio of 10 : 1 (second:first) and a total energy of 186 J. In comparison to a single, high contrast shot, the inferred fast electron divergence is reduced by 2.7 times, while the fast electron current density is increased by a factor of 1.8. The enhancements are reproduced with modelling and are shown to be due to the self-generation of magnetic fields. Such a scheme could be of considerable benefit to fast ignition inertial fusion.

Recently achieved high intensities of short laser pulses open new prospects in their application to hole boring in inhomogeneous overdense plasmas and for ignition in precompressed DT fusion targets. A simple analytical model and numerical simulations demonstrate that pulses with intensities exceeding 1022 W/cm2 may penetrate deeply into the plasma as a result of efficient ponderomotive acceleration of ions in the forward direction. The penetration depth as big as hundreds of microns depends on the laser fluence, which has to exceed a few tens of GJ/cm2. The fast ions, accelerated at the bottom of the channel with an efficiency of more than 20%, show a high directionality and may heat the precompressed target core to fusion conditions., Comment: 4 pages

A statistical model for forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (FSBS) is developed for a spatially incoherent, monochromatic, laser beam propagating in a plasma. A threshold for the average power in a speckle is found, well below the self-focusing one, above which the laser beam spatial incoherence can not prevent the coherent growth of FSBS. Three-dimensional simulations confirm its existence and reveal the onset of beam spray above it. From these results, we propose a new figure of merit for the control of the propagation through a plasma of a spatially incoherent laser beam., Comment: submitted to PRL

Test particle studies of electron scattering on ions, in an oscillatory electromagnetic field have shown that standard theoretical assumptions of small angle collisions and phase independent orbits are incorrect for electron trajectories with drift velocities smaller than quiver velocity amplitude. This leads to significant enhancement of the electron energy gain and the inverse bremsstrahlung heating rate in strong laser fields. Nonlinear processes such as Coulomb focusing and correlated collisions of electrons being brought back to the same ion by the oscillatory field are responsible for large angle, head-on scattering processes. The statistical importance of these trajectories has been examined for mono-energetic beam-like, Maxwellian and highly anisotropic electron distribution functions. The mechanism of ablation of solids by intense femtosecond laser pulses is described in an explicit analytical form. It is shown that at high intensities when the ionization of the target material is complete before the end of the pulse, the ablation mechanism is the same for both metals and dielectrics. The physics of this new ablation regime involves ion acceleration in the electrostatic field caused by charge separation created by energetic electrons escaping from the target. The formulae for ablation thresholds and ablation rates for metals and dielectrics, combining the laser and target parameters, are derived and compared to experimental data.
