Abstract Background The difficulty of accurately assessing LLIN use has led us to test electronic data logging motion detectors to provide quantitative data on household LLIN usage. Methods The main movements associated with an LLIN when appropriately used for malaria control were characterised under laboratory conditions. Data output from motion detectors attached to the LLINs associated with these specific movements were collated. In preliminary field studies in central Cote d’Ivoire, a pre-tested and validated questionnaire was used to identify the number of days householders claimed to have slept under LLINs. This information was compared to data downloaded from the motion detectors. Results Output data recording movement on the x, y, and z axes from the data loggers was consistently associated with the specific net movements. Recall of LLIN usage reported by questionnaires after a week was overestimated by 13.6%. This increased to 22.8% after 2 weeks and 38.7% after a month compared to information from the data loggers. Sorghum is important for its grain as food, animal feed, seeds and brewing local bear. Its stalks are used for shelter, animal feed and at times as source of sugar. This study was performed at Damazin Research Station, Damazin, (Latitude 11°47’34N, longitude 34°21’55 E) and approximately 343.01 meters above sea level (MSL) for two consecutive seasons of 2006/07 and 2007/08. There were three different types of seed beds used. namely, flat (control 1); normal ridged and tied ridged in a Striga infested field trial. The aim of this study to test for the incidence of witch weed (Striga spp.) and performance of sorghum under the different treatments. The procedures were carried out: two rates of urea fertilizers applied at 103.5 and 207.0 kg/ha; four leguminous plants namely, Bambara nuts, (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.; Groundnuts, (Arachis hypogoea L.); Clitoria, (Clitoria ternatea); and Desmodium spp.) were intercropped with sorghum, Sorghum bicolor L. Moench (cv. Wad Ahmed) and a sole sorghum without any treatment (control 2) were compared for their effect on Striga population at 8 and 12 weeks after sorghum emergence (WASE); Striga dry weight at harvest; sorghum height and sorghum grain and straw yield. The results showed that standard ridged seedbeds effectively reduced Striga population and dry weight. Clitoria spp., among the legumes intercropped with sorghum, reduced sorghum height significantly, and the application urea fertilizers regardless of the rates used, increased sorghum grain yield as well as Striga population.

In our previous microarray study we identified two subgroups of high-grade serous ovarian cancers with distinct gene expression and survival. Among differentially expressed genes was an Integrin beta-like 1 (ITGBL1), coding for a poorly characterized protein comprised of ten EGF-like repeats. Here, we have analyzed the influence of ITGBL1 on the phenotype of ovarian cancer (OC) cells. We analyzed expression of four putative ITGBL1 mRNA isoforms in five OC cell lines. OAW42 and SKOV3, having the lowest level of any ITGBL1 mRNA, were chosen to produce ITGBL1-overexpressing variants. In these cells, abundant ITGBL1 mRNA expression could be detected by RT-PCR. Immunodetection was successful only in the culture media, suggesting that ITGBL1 is efficiently secreted. We found that ITGBL1 overexpression affected cellular adhesion, migration and invasiveness, while it had no effect on proliferation rate and the cell cycle. ITGBL1-overexpressing cells were significantly more resistant to cisplatin and paclitaxel, major drugs used in OC treatment. Global gene expression analysis revealed that signaling pathways affected by ITGBL1 overexpression were mostly those related to extracellular matrix organization and function, integrin signaling, focal adhesion, cellular communication and motility, these results were consistent with the findings of our functional studies. Overall, our results indicate that higher expression of ITGBL1 in OC is associated with features that may worsen clinical course of the disease.

- Abstract
A relationship is expressed between the strength of concrete mixes and their cost, in terms of unit costs of the materials used in them. Expressions are then derived for the optimum dimensions of one-way slabs, two-way slabs, rectangular slabs, T-beams, and ribbed slabs, when subject to bending. Expressions are also derived for the cost of tied columns subjected to concentrated loads and· for beams subjected to shear force. The cost of forming and of nominal reinforcement (for example, temperature steel) is considered. Both the British Standard and the ACI Codes are used and, wherever appropriate, separate expressions are derived for each code of practice. The load factor methods of these codes are used when considering flexure and concentric thrust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: A poorly characterized protein called Integrin beta-like 1 (ITGBL1) may play an important role in ovarian cancer progression. Our previous studies have indicated that increased expression of the gene coding for ITGBL1 is related to poor prognosis for ovarian cancer patients. In the present study we investigated the role of ITGBL1 in ovarian cancer cells using several in-vitro assays and global gene expression analysis. We found that ITGBL1 overexpression affected cellular adhesion, motility and invasiveness. In addition, ITGBL1 caused cells to be more resistant to cisplatin and paclitaxel, major drugs used in ovarian cancer treatment. Our results indicate that higher expression of ITGBL1 in ovarian cancer is associated with the features that may worsen the clinical course of the disease. Further studies will show if ITGBL1 can be exploited as a cancer biomarker and/or molecular target for experimental biological therapy. - Abstract
The microgrid paradigm has gained much interest in the electricity industry due to the increased penetration of distributed resources. A grid-tied microgrid can be viewed as a single generating entity or a load depending on its power export and import at the grid supply point. Similar to conventional generators, grid-tied microgrids have the potential to be able to participate in the energy market in the future to achieve technical, financial and environmental benefits. Effective participation in the energy markets requires numerous planning tools and a comprehensive understanding of the full capability of the microgrid. This paper presents a systematic approach for developing a capability diagram for a grid-tied microgrid which represents the active and reactive power exchange capability of the microgrid with the main grid. Capability diagrams have been developed for two different microgrids and the impacts of different modelling aspects and network conditions have been analysed using several case studies. Effects of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, capacitor banks, and other storage devices on microgrid capability diagram have also been addressed in this paper. Furthermore, operating points of the capability diagram have been verified using time domain simulations.

- Abstract
Microgrids comprising multiple distributed energy resources are being increasingly integrated into electricity networks. Considering the multiplicity of the distributed energy resources, it is impractical to represent them as detailed models in power system simulations. Hence, it will be attractive for electricity utilities to employ simplified models of microgrids in dynamic studies. This paper proposes a method for representing grid-Tied microgrids as simplified models in such studies. The proposed aggregated modelling approach investigates the applicability of modal analysis as a tool for model aggregating of grid-Tied microgrids. A new step to automate the selection of dominant modes is introduced in the model aggregating procedure. Validity of the reduced order dynamic equivalents is tested under different operating conditions. The paper demonstrates that the enhanced modal analysis reduces the model order and enables the representation of a hybrid microgrid in terms of the states of the microgrid PCC, while preserving the important dynamics.

- Abstract
Microgrids comprising multiple distributed resources are being increasingly considered for integration into electricity networks. Considering the multiplicity of the distributed resources in a single location and distributed nature of such single entities, it is impractical to represent them as detailed models in power system simulations. Hence, it will be attractive for electricity utilities to employ simplified models of microgrids in dynamic studies. This paper proposes a method for representing grid-tied microgrids as simplified generator or load units in such studies. For this purpose, the paper takes an approach in investigating the applicability of modal analysis as a tool for model equivalencing of grid-tied microgrids with inverter and non-inverter interfaced distributed generators. Validity of the reduced order dynamic equivalents is tested under different operating conditions: power export and import modes, with different load types and fault conditions. Scalability of the model equivalencing approach is demonstrated using a case study developed based on the IEEE 13-Bus test feeder. Furthermore, the model equivalencing is applied on microgrids in a multi-microgrid environment to validate the methodology. The dynamic model equivalent of the microgrid can be represented as a current source at the point of common coupling while retaining all imperative dynamic characteristics. The proposed methodology is also applicable to distribution network clusters comprising distributed generators.

Increasing penetration of distributed resources have enabled the development of the microgrid concept. Similar to traditional generators, microgrids can participate in the energy market to achieve technical, economical and environmental benefits. In order to facilitate the participation in energy markets, microgrid operators need to be aware of the full capability of the microgrids. This paper presents a systematic approach for developing a capability chart for a grid-tied microgrid which represents the active and reactive power capability at the grid supply point. - Abstract
Tied Knowledge is a book designed to provide a practical conceptual framework for understanding the dynamics of higher education. Using examples primarily from Australia, Britain and the United States, it examines power structures both outside and inside academia and how they interact and shape knowledge. These structures include hierarchy, disciplines, patriarchy, the state, capitalism and professions. Academia as a system of power itself both resists and accommodates these other power systems. The key resource used by the academics to promote their interests is the power to create and legitimate knowledge. By its form and content, this knowledge is tied to both the interests of academics and to those of powerful groups in society. The book is neither pro nor anti-academia. Instead, it focusses on the structural factors shaping academic behaviour so that initiatives can strengthen and broaden the positive features of academia while trying to overcome the negative features. A key portion of the book is an examination and assessment of the main strategies that have been used to reform or challenge the nature and uses of academic power.

Homonuclear 55‐atom …︁ …︁ transition‐metal clusters of the 3d and 4d elements show a correlation between the cluster structure type (atomic symbol, bottom right corner) and the bulk lattice morphology (top left corner). This link is found by gas‐phase electron diffraction and DFT calculations. In their Communication on page 6102 ff., D. Schooss et al. also describe how the cluster structure types differ in maximum atomic coordination numbers in analogy to the coordination numbers in the bulk lattices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LARA SPENCER (ABC NEWS) (Off-camera) Not a whole lot. Couldn't look away from it. It was a dramatic game. Steph Curry ejected as King James led the Cavaliers to victory trouncing the Golden State Warriors tying the series 3-3. So no they are headed for the game seven showdown. Good news for ABC's T.J. Holmes, who's in Cleveland with more. T.J. how about you, any sleep? [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Background\ud \ud The difficulty of accurately assessing LLIN use has led us to test electronic data logging motion detectors to provide quantitative data on household LLIN usage.\ud \ud Methods\ud \ud The main movements associated with an LLIN when appropriately used for malaria control were characterised under laboratory conditions. Data output from motion detectors attached to the LLINs associated with these specific movements were collated. In preliminary field studies in central Cote d’Ivoire, a pre-tested and validated questionnaire was used to identify the number of days householders claimed to have slept under LLINs. This information was compared to data downloaded from the motion detectors.\ud \ud Results\ud \ud Output data recording movement on the x, y, and z axes from the data loggers was consistently associated with the specific net movements. Recall of LLIN usage reported by questionnaires after a week was overestimated by 13.6%. This increased to 22.8% after 2 weeks and 38.7% after a month compared to information from the data loggers. Rates of LLIN use were positively correlated with An.gambiae s.s biting density (LRT = 273.70; P
