First-ever measurements of the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate in the northeastern Strait of Magellan (Segunda Angostura region) taken in March 2019 are reported here. At the time of microstructure measurements, the magnitude of the reversing tidal current ranged between 0.8 and 1.2 ms−1. The probability distribution of the TKE dissipation rate in the water interior above the bottom boundary layer was lognormal with a high median value ε med MS = 1.2 × 10 - 6 Wkg−1. Strong vertical shear, 1 - 2 × 10 - 2 s−1, in the weakly stratified water interior ensued a sub-critical gradient Richardson number R i < 10 - 1 - 10 - 2 . In the bottom boundary layer (BBL), the vertical shear and the TKE dissipation rate both decreased exponentially with the distance from the seafloor ξ , leading to a turbulent regime with an eddy viscosity K M ∼ 10 - 3 m2/s, which varied with time and location, while being independent of the vertical coordinate in the upper part of BBL (for ξ > ∼ 2 meters above the bottom). Compound clinoforms are well‐recognized in modern large muddy deltas and in some ancient deltas, but there is still a lack of understanding regarding their lithology variations and the process by which sand from the shoreline clinothem reaches the subaqueous clinothem foresets that are sometimes 100 km away. Net‐to‐gross, thickness and facies association evaluation show overall coarsening‐upward through a 191 m thick exposure of the late Pliocene Orinoco, Lower Morne L'Enfer Formation, with a distinct tripartite lithology distribution. The subaqueous clinothem records a lower, relatively muddy coarsening‐upward interval, 112 m thick, with net‐to‐gross increasing from zero to 60%. On the lower delta front, zero net sand units show graded beds of silt and mud with occasional spring–neap rhythmites, strongly suggesting gravity flows influenced by tidal currents. These foreset beds are overlain by structureless very fine sand, interbedded with deformed wavy to lenticular, grey fluid mud layers that rapidly accumulated near the subaqueous clinoform rollover point. The tidally dominated subaqueous platform (subaqueous delta topset), 1 to 4 m thick, shows zero net sand units with anomalously high mud content, >70%, due to the high near‐bed suspended sediment concentration of externally derived fluid mud that migrated littorally alongshore from the Amazon Delta. The interaction of freshwater river flood discharge with fluid‐mud banks gave rise to density stratification with fine sand hypopycnally dispersing as a turbulent layer above the denser fluid‐mud carpet. The shoreline clinothem (<8 m thick) has high net‐to‐gross, >85%, attributed to winnowing of sediment by waves and tides. Utilizing net‐to‐gross trends and facies changes provide useful criteria to identify compound clinoforms in the rock record. The Orinoco Delta deposits, however, are unusual, since fluid mud hinders sand deposition on the platform, allowing for easy identification of platform facies and a clear distinction between the subaqueous and shoreline clinothem in outcrop. With three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations we show that the size of the decretion disc and the structure of the accretion flow on to the neutron star in a Be/X-ray binary strongly depends upon the disc aspect ratio, H / R. We simulate a Be star disc that is coplanar to the orbit of a circularly or moderately eccentric neutron star companion, thereby maximizing the effects of tidal truncation. For low-disc aspect ratio, H / R ≲ 0.1, the disc is efficiently tidally truncated by the neutron star. Most material that escapes the Roche lobe of the Be star is accreted by the neutron star through tidal streams. For larger disc aspect ratio, the outflow rate through the Be star disc is higher, tidal truncation becomes inefficient, the disc fills the Roche lobe and extends to the orbit of the companion. Some material escapes the binary as a gas stream that begins near the L2 point. While the accretion rate on to the neutron star is higher, the fraction of the outflow that is accreted by the neutron star is smaller. Low-density Be star discs are expected to be approximately isothermal, such that H / R increases with radius. In this paper, we propose a new 3D model for vertical-axis tidal turbines (VATTs) embedded in the shallow-water code SHYFEM. The turbine model is based on the Blade-Element∖Momentum (BEM) theory and, therefore, is able to predict turbine performance based on the local flow conditions and the geometric characteristics of the turbine. It is particularly suitable for studying turbine arrays, as it can capture the interactions between the turbines. For this reason, the model is used to test a tidal farm of 21 devices with fluid dynamic simulations. In particular, we deploy the farm at Portland Bill, which is a marine site characterised by a wide spread in the direction of the tidal currents during a flood-ebb tide cycle. We optimised the lateral and longitudinal spacing of the turbines in a fence using computational fluid dynamics simulations and then performed a sensitivity analysis by changing the distance between the fences. The results show that the greater the distance between the fences, the higher the power output. The increase in power generation is around 16%, but this implies a huge increase in the horizontal extent of the farm. Further assessments should be carried out, as the expansion of a marine area dedicated to energy exploitation may conflict with other stakeholder interests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a need for increased renewable energy to meet net-zero targets and decarbonise the economy. Harnessing the predictable power of the tides with tidal stream turbines can contribute to this. Tidal energy is a nascent technology with higher costs at present. However, cost reductions have been observed with an increased deployment in other renewable energy technologies that have received financial support, and it is postulated that similar will happen with tidal energy. The first tidal stream projects have been awarded market support in the UK through the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, with almost 100 MW expected to be commissioned by 2028. This work uses learning rates to investigate how much investment in ongoing market support might be needed to achieve cost reductions through subsidised deployment alongside research and innovation. Using a range of informed 'what if?' scenarios, it shows sensitivity to key inputs. The results show that the support needed is most sensitive to the learning rate, reducing it from 15% to 12.5% or 10% doubles or more than quadruples the investment required, respectively. The support is also highly dependent on the starting cost from which learning occurs, taken as the CfD Strike Price in 2025. Varying this between 156 and 220 GBP/MWh results in total investment of GBP 6.7 and 22.3 bn, respectively. Commercial scale tidal stream turbines (TST) are expected to be deployed in shallow water where the depth varies from 1.5 to 3 turbine diameters. In this study, numerical simulation is conducted at realistic hydrodynamic conditions of potential tidal sites using the stationary actuator disc method at ambient turbulence varying from 5% to 20%, a range of rotor realistic rotor thrust coefficient from 0.64 to 0.98 and a rotor-diameter-to-depth ratio of 20% to 60%. The result shows that the TST wake is affected by the rotor-diameter-to-depth ratio, ambient turbulence, and thrust coefficient. The new empirical model is in accordance with the numerical simulation of a full-scale turbine and is validated with the TST experiment at different rotor-diameter-to-depth ratios with reasonable results in the far wake. Multi-satellite altimetry has been employed in tidal modelling as its accuracy has been proven acceptable in constructing good-quality models. However, the modelling process often fails to consider the varying temporal resolution and observation periods among satellites, which can affect the accuracy of the model due to aliasing and Rayleigh effects. In Indonesia, we investigate and propose a satellite selection procedure for tidal modelling utilizing the response method, validated with along-track data obtained from both older and newer generations of ERM (Exact Repeat Mission)-type altimetry satellites, including the TOPEX/Jason series (TOPEX, Jason-1, Jason-2, Jason-3, and SENTINEL-6A), ENVISAT, ERS-2, GFO, SENTINEL-3B, and SENTINEL3A. The most optimal satellite combination identified is the TOPEX/Jason series, GFO, and ENVISAT, as they contribute significantly less error compared to ERS-2, SENTINEL-3A, and SENTINEL-3B, with errors exceeding 50%, primarily due to aliasing and Rayleigh effects. This combination of three satellites with tide gauge stations achieves higher precision (11.31 cm) than the current global tidal model. This study provides empirical evidence that the accuracy of tidal models is not solely dependent on the number of altimetry satellites utilized, but implementing effective satellite selection procedures is also crucial to enhance the precision of a model. The internal waves in the South China Sea are highly correlated with the tidal currents in the Luzon Strait, which makes it possible to establish an internal wave prediction model based on internal wave kinematics. However, the kinematic model requires the input of the exact location and time of the initial internal wave for which the generation mechanism of internal waves in the northern South China Sea must be well understood. By analyzing the internal wave field in the northern South China Sea (SCS) simulated using the MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm) and observations from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and mooring temperature–salinity–depth (TSD) chains, the source regions and propagation initiation times of internal waves are identified for three typical tidal phases, i.e., the diurnal-tide-dominated phase (DTP), transition tide phase (TTP), and semidiurnal-tide-dominated phase (STP). The generation procedures of Type A and Type B internal waves are discussed in detail with those data. The present study reveals that Type A and Type B waves are generated at the eastern and western ridges, respectively, and both commence their westward propagation at the peak of the eastward tidal flow. The dynamics of lee waves and the resonance effect with double ridges constitute the generation mechanisms of internal waves in the northern SCS. Combined with varying configurations of tidal conditions, topography, and stratification, the generation procedures of Type A and Type B waves in the DTP, TTP, and STP are elucidated with the generation mechanism in a unified and self-consistent way. In short, during DTP, weaker A waves alternate with weaker B waves each day; during TTP, strong A waves and strong B waves appear alternately every day; and there are two weak A waves per day during the STP. The generation mechanism can help in developing future empirical models for generating internal waves using tidal currents, topography, and stratification without requiring complex fluid dynamics calculations. Thanks to the precise astrometric measurements of proper motions by the Gaia mission, a new tidal stellar stream has been discovered in the northern hemisphere. The distribution of star count shows that the stream is approximately 80° long and 1.°70 wide. Observations of 21 member stars, including 14 RR Lyrae stars, indicate that the stream has an eccentric and retrograde orbit with e = 0.58. The low metallicity, high total energy, and large angular momentum suggest that it is associated with the merging event Sequoia. A dataset of 85 Lagrangian surface drifter trajectories covering the central North Sea area and the Skagerrak from 2017–2021 of 17 deployments is presented. The data have been quality-controlled, uniformly structured, and assimilated in a standard NetCDF format (10.1594/PANGAEA.963166, Meyerjürgens et al., 2023a). Using appropriate methods presented in detail here, surface currents were calculated from the drifter position data. Based on a drifter deployment in the Skagerrak, it is demonstrated that the Lagrangian measurements can be converted into an Eulerian representation by calculating mean current velocities. Tidal energy spectra were analyzed separately for the southern and northern areas of the North Sea, and tidal ellipses were calculated to determine the tidal impact on surface currents. Significant differences between the shallow shelf and the deeper areas of the North Sea are evident. While the shallow nearshore areas are dominated by tidal currents, deeper areas such as the Skagerrak record a high mean residual circulation driven by high-density gradients. Measurements using Eulerian approaches and remote sensing methods are restricted in temporal and spatial coverage, in particular, to capture fine-scale dynamics. For this reason, Lagrangian measurements, to a large extent, provide new insights into the complex submesoscale dynamics of the North Sea. Exemplarily, the Skagerrak region is used to demonstrate that high-resolution drifter observations capture both mesoscale and small-scale current patterns. This unique dataset, covering the entire southeastern North Sea and the Skagerrak, offers further analysis possibilities and can be used for the investigation of various hydrodynamic and environmental issues, e.g., the analysis of submesoscale current dynamics at ocean fronts, the determination of the kinetic eddy energy, and the propagation of pollutants in the North Sea. An advanced coupling between a three-dimensional ocean circulation model (CROCO) and a spectral wave model (WAVEWATCH-III) is presented to better represent the interactions of macro-tidal currents with winds and waves. In the previous implementation of the coupled interface between these two models, some of the wave-induced terms in the ocean dynamic equations were computed from their monochromatic approximations (e.g. Stokes drift, Bernoulli head, near-bottom wave orbital velocity, wave-to-ocean energy flux). In the present study, the exchanges of these fields computed from the spectral wave model are implemented and evaluated. A set of numerical experiments for a coastal configuration of the macro-tidal circulation off the Bay of Somme (France) is designed. The impact of the spectral versus monochromatic computation of wave-induced terms has a notable effect on the macro-tidal hydrodynamics, particularly in scenarios involving storm waves and opposing winds to tidal flows. This effect manifests as a reduction in the wave-induced deceleration of the vertical profile of tidal currents. The new implementation provides current magnitudes closer to measurements than those predicted using monochromatic formulations, particularly at the free surface. The spectral-surface Stokes drift and the near-bottom wave orbital velocity are found to be the spectral fields with the most impact, respectively increasing advection towards the free surface and shifting the profile close to the seabed. In the particular case of the Bay of Somme, the approximation of these spectral terms with their monochromatic counterparts ultimately results in an underestimation of ocean surface currents. Our model developments thus provide a better description of the competing effects of tides, winds, and waves on the circulation off macro-tidal bays, with implications for the study of air–sea interactions and sediment transport processes. Scouring around the fixed foundations of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) remains a pressing concern within the offshore wind industry, significantly jeopardizing OWT safety. Despite previous efforts, the current understanding of this phenomenon remains incomplete, as various factors related to offshore wind farms and OWT operations can exert intricate influences. To further explore this matter, this paper undertakes a new study to further understand the interplay between monopile vibrations, tidal currents, and sea waves, elucidating their combined impact on scour surrounding an OWT's foundation. It was found that, besides pile vibration amplitude and frequency, the pile vibration direction can also notably influence the scour around the monopile. Specifically, the most pronounced scour mostly transpires when the monopile undergoes vibrations along the 135° direction relative to the inflow direction. The mildest scour mostly occurs when the pile vibrates along the 90° direction. Additionally, this study reveals that different types of waves, indicated by the ratio of water depth, H, to wavelength, L, also engender varying scour around the monopile. The influence of waves on scour increases with the decrease in the H/L ratio, implying that OWT foundations are more threatened by shallow water waves than by deep water waves. Sea level and its horizontal gradient are an expression of oceanic volume, heat content, and currents. Large‐scale currents have historically been viewed as mostly "baroclinic," and tides as "barotropic," respectively, in the loose sense of being strongly related to the oceanic density distribution or not. In particular, the evolution of the barotropic velocity is influenced by a horizontal pressure‐gradient force that depends on the gradient of a particular depth‐weighting of the density field as well as on the gradient of the sea‐surface elevation ζ; hence, even the tides must be viewed as a product of the coupled interaction of barotropic and baroclinic fields. The purpose of this note is to give dynamical precision to the distinction between barotropic and baroclinic contributions to ζ and the surface pressure‐gradient force −g∇ζ, and, in the particular case of the tides, demonstrate their combined barotropic‐baroclinic interactions with a realistically forced, high‐resolution simulation of the Pacific Ocean circulation. While the different tidal sea‐level contributions manifest a horizontal scale separation (e.g., more barotropic at larger scales; more baroclinic surface pressure‐gradient force at smaller scales), there are cross‐mode corrections in both at the level of tens of percent. The proposed barotropic‐baroclinic decomposition is generally relevant to the sea‐level expression of oceanic currents. Plain Language Summary: Sea‐level variations at tidal frequencies occur because of the "astronomical" gravitational force acting nearly uniformly over the oceanic depth. Thus, they are commonly associated with the depth‐averaged velocity, that is, the barotropic current. However, due to oceanic density stratification and variable bathymetry, the resulting barotropic currents also generate vertically varying (baroclinic) tidal currents that also have an expression in the sea level and surface pressure‐gradient force. A prescription is given for how to decompose sea level and its gradient into its barotropic and baroclinic parts for both tides and currents, and the answers are illustrated using a tide‐resolving simulation of the Pacific Ocean. Slow rotator galaxies are distinct amongst galaxy populations, with simulations suggesting that a mix of minor and major mergers are responsible for their formation. A promising path to resolve outstanding questions on the type of merger responsible, is by investigating deep imaging of massive galaxies for signs of potential merger remnants. We utilize deep imaging from the Subaru-Hyper Suprime Cam Wide data to search for tidal features in massive [log10(M */M⊙) > 10] early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We perform a visual check for tidal features on images where the galaxy has been subtracted using a Multi-Gauss Expansion (MGE) model. We find that 31 |$^{+2}_{-2}$|  per cent of our sample show tidal features. When comparing galaxies with and without features, we find that the distributions in stellar mass, light-weighted mean stellar population age, and H |${\alpha}$| equivalent width are significantly different, whereas spin (⁠|$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$|⁠), ellipticity, and bulge-to-total ratio have similar distributions. When splitting our sample in age, we find that galaxies below the median age (10.8 Gyr) show a correlation between the presence of shells and lower |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$|⁠ , as expected from simulations. We also find these younger galaxies which are classified as having 'strong' shells have lower |$\lambda _{R_{\rm {e}}}$|⁠. However, simulations suggest that merger features become undetectable within ∼2–4 Gyr post-merger. This implies that the relationship between tidal features and merger history disappears for galaxies with older stellar ages, i.e. those that are more likely to have merged long ago. The purpose of this study is to determine current conditions in open water close to narrow strait waters, as well as canal estuaries. Current data is the result of measurements that have been carried out using ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) mini type ADP-SONTEK equipment on May 16, 2018, while tidal data refers to the recording results of the Makassar BIG tidal station. The results showed that the total surface current speed ranged from 0.017 - 0.375 m/sec with a dominant direction to the west or to open water both at high tide and at low tide. Numerical experiments have been carried out to model hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes to explain the nature of the spatial distribution of Zostera marina (eelgrass) in the inner bays of Posyet Bay. Hydrodynamic modeling has been performed using the Delft3D flow model. The Simulating WAves Near shore (SWAN) spectral wave model has been used to simulate wind wave parameters (direction of propagation, wave length and height, and near-bottom orbital velocities). The restructuring of the bottom topography under the influence of wind waves and the hydrodynamic influence of tidal and wind currents has been calculated with the Delft3D software package. The results of numerical experiments showed that the dynamics of the coastal bottom topography is determined by the nature of sediment motion in the coastal zone under the combined influence of waves and currents. A comparison of the modeling results with data on the distribution of Zostera showed a high correlation with model simulations of erosion and accumulation in the coastal zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tidal stream turbines (TST) are a promising option for electricity generation to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy. The actuator disk (AD) method is often employed to represent a TST, to evaluate the TST operating in a tidal flow. While this method can effectively reduce the computational cost and provide accurate prediction of far-wake flow conditions, it falls short of fully characterising critical hydrodynamics elements. To address this limitation, a hybrid method is implemented by coupling AD with the blade element momentum (BEM) theory, using detailed performance data, such as thrust, to enhance the prediction of the wake effects. This work focuses on the development of a hybrid BEM–AD method using Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models within computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Two variations and a hybrid modification of an AD model are presented in this paper. The first modified variation is a velocity variation that takes into account velocity profile inflow into the disk's configuration. The second modified variation is a radial variation that integrates the blade element theory into the disk's configuration. The hybrid modified model combines both the velocity profiles influenced and blade element theory in the design and analysis of the actuator disk. Several key investigations on some of the pre-solver parameters are also investigated in this research such as the effect of changing velocity and radial distance on the porosity and loss coefficient of the actuator disk performance. Importantly, this work provides an improved method to evaluate the key wake effects from a TST array which is crucial to determine the power performance of the TST array. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study proposes a method for estimating river plume length from water levels and river discharge rates. A numerical model for coastal ocean dynamics was refined by comparing thermohaline fields calculated using the model with those measured off the mouth of the Sakawa River in Sagami Bay, Japan. The model successfully captured the reduction in salinity within the surface 1.0-m layer caused by riverine water transport. The simulated surface salinity maps revealed that the dynamic motions of the river plumes were primarily driven by one of the two diurnal occurrences of tidal current intensification. Regression analyses of the simulated results demonstrated that the river plume lengths were closely correlated with the water levels and river discharge rates, and that they could be accurately estimated from preceding river discharge rates under weak wind condition. This study presents the initial findings from analyzing the ocean surface current observations during 2018 from the recently installed high-frequency (HF) radars in the Gulf of Khambhat in the northeastern Arabian Sea, India. The research is structured into two main sections: firstly, the extraction of the major (M2, S2, N2, K1, and O1) and shallow-water (M4, MS4, M6, and M8) tidal currents in the gulf, and secondly, understanding the impact of seasonal riverine freshwater influxes on the M2 tidal currents. The HF radars accurately captured strongest currents of ~2.0 m/s within the gulf. Additionally, the circulation pattern in the western gulf is mostly characterized by zonal currents, in contrast to the eastern gulf, where meridional currents prevail. Based on the findings of the higher harmonic analysis, it is apparent that the M2 tidal currents exhibit the highest magnitude, followed by other semi-daily constituents such as S2 and N2, as well as diurnal tidal constituents including K1 and O1. The M4 tidal currents, which are one of the shallow-water tidal components, exhibit strengths that span from 3.15 to 16.50 cm/s. The enhancement of tidal currents in the nearshore areas (within approximately 50 m) can be attributed to their interaction with the bottom bathymetry and the general coastline geometry of the gulf. Notably, higher values of Richardson number ( R i ) and Brunt-Väisälä frequency ( N 2 ) indicated the presence of highly stratified upper layers, particularly during September. Background: The risk management program will run well with commitment and good management. This study aims to describe the experience of nurse managers in implementing risk management in hospitals. Research methodology: this study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection technique used Focus Group Interviews with 12 nurse managers consisting of 1 Head of Sub Installation, 7 Head nurses, and 4 Team Leaders. Interviews were carried out three times, and each implementation consisted of four participants. Analysis using thematic content and consolidation for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) was used as a guide to research reporting. The research found three inhibiting factors in implementing risk management: 1) Busyness, 2) Lack of knowledge, and 3) Lack of structured monitoring and evaluation. Conclusion: The active participation of nurse managers in implementing risk management is very influential in the successful implementation of risk management in hospitals. Good time management, increasing the level of knowledge, and supported by a systematic risk management monitoring-evaluation system means that risk management will be carried out well. We have investigated the properties (e.g., age, metallicity) of the stellar populations of a ringlike tidal stellar stream (or streams) around the edge-on galaxy SPRC047 (z = 0.031) using spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to integrated broadband aperture flux densities. We used visual images in six different bands and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 μ m data. We have attempted to derive best-fit stellar population parameters (metallicity, age) in three noncontiguous segments of the stream. Due to the very low surface brightness of the stream, we have performed a deconvolution with a Richardson–Lucy–type algorithm of the low spatial resolution 3.6 μ m IRAC image, thereby reducing the effect of the point-spread function aliased emission from the bright edge-on central galaxy at the locations of our three stream segments. Our SED fits that used several different star formation (SF) history priors, from an exponentially decaying SF burst to continuous SF, indicate that the age–metallicity–dust degeneracy is not resolved, most likely because of inadequate wavelength coverage and low signal-to-noise ratios of the low surface brightness features. We also discuss how future deep visual–near-infrared observations, combined with absolute flux calibration uncertainties at or below the 1% level, complemented by equally well absolute flux-calibrated observations in ultraviolet and mid-infrared bands, would improve the accuracy of broadband SED fitting results for low surface brightness targets, such as stellar streams around nearby galaxies that are not resolved into stars. The processes of ocean dynamics are complex near the Pearl River Estuary and are not clear due to a lack of abundant observations. The spatial characteristics of the spring sea surface currents in the adjacent waters of the Pearl River Estuary were analyzed using the current data observed by a three-station high-frequency surface wave radar system (HFSWRS). Compared with the two-station HFSWRS, the deviation of current velocity and direction observed by the three-station HFSWRS from the underway measurements decreased by 42.86% and 38.30%, respectively. The analyzed results show that the M2 tidal current is the dominant current among all the tidal constituents, followed by K1, with angles of inclination ranging from 130° to 150°. The tidal flow is dominated by northwest–southeast back-and-forth flow. In the southern part of the observed area, which is far from the coastline, the tidal current ellipses exhibit a circular pattern. The prevalent tidal current type in this region is irregularly semi-diurnal, and the shallow water constituents also have a significant effect. The tidal energy in the adjacent waters of the Pearl River Estuary is affected by potential energy flux and kinetic energy flux. As the water depth and currents velocity increase in the southeast direction, the tidal energy flux increases. In the nearshore zone, the direction of tidal energy flux varies along the coastline. The changes in the residual current within the observed area are correlated with the sea surface wind field. Based on the high-precision sea surface current observed by the three-station HFSWRS, the characteristics of the ocean dynamic processes near the Pearl River Estuary are analyzed comprehensively, which provides important reference and confidence for the application of the developing new radar observing network with about 10 radar stations near the Pearl River Estuary. Kuphus is a genus of teredinid bivalves whose modern counterpart, K. polythalamius, colonises oxygen-poor and restricted marine environments enriched in plant remains. In the Oligocene, Kuphus colonies are quite abundant worldwide, but their depositional setting has never been studied in detail. We describe the first report of Oligocene Kuphus beds from the Iberian Peninsula, cropping out in platform deposits of the Prebetic (Southeastern Spain). By means of anterior endings and taphonomic characters as orientation of Kuphus tubes, fragmentation, packing and mixing with other fauna, four skeletal concentrations were distinguished: SkC A represents in situ colonies with anterior endings well preserved and with local dolomitisation around the tubes and was recorded in the inner lagoon; SkC B, with parallel and horizontally reoriented tubes, was formed by tidal currents; SkC C records high-energy events breaking down the tubes and resedimenting them close to the source area; SkC D is characterised by fragmented tubes mixed with other bioclasts, deposited by storms in the outer platform. The recorded skeletal concentrations are consistent with the environmental setting of K. polythalamius, but the morphological differences and the absence of data on the presence of plant remains could possibly reflect adaptations to higher variety of palaeoenvironments. A field campaign was carried out at a sheltered sandy beach with the aim of gaining new insights into the driving processes behind sheltered beach morphodynamics. Detailed measurements of the local hydrodynamics, bed-level changes and sediment composition were collected at a man-made beach on the leeside of the barrier island Texel, bordering the Marsdiep basin that is part of the Dutch Wadden Sea. The dataset consists of (1) current, wave and turbidity measurements from a dense cross-shore array and a 3 km alongshore array; (2) sediment composition data from beach surface samples; (3) high-temporal-resolution RTK-GNSS beach profile measurements; (4) a pre-campaign spatially covering topobathy map; and (5) meteorological data. This paper outlines how these measurements were set up and how the data have been processed, stored and can be accessed. The novelty of this dataset lies in the detailed approach to resolve forcing conditions on a sheltered beach, where morphological evolution is governed by a subtle interplay between tidal and wind-driven currents, waves and bed composition, primarily due to the low-energy (near-threshold) forcing. The style of the underwater images varies according to the region of the sea. However, Tidal Stream Turbine (TST) rotor images captured in the laboratory environment cannot reflect the real underwater environment in image style, resulting in poor generalization of image signal-based fault detection algorithms. Due to the fixed capture position of the camera, the TST rotor image dataset has a high semantic similarity between images, resulting in content loss in conventional image-to-image translation networks. Meanwhile, the one-to-one translation feature in other works cannot meet our requirements. In this work, a Domain Variable Prior-based Multi-style Transfer Network (DVP-MSTN) is proposed to achieve TST rotor image style augmentation. First, the backbone network is trained using a public paired dataset to acquire prior knowledge of domain variable (Knowledge Acquiring, KA). Next, a Multi-domain Transfer Unit (MDT unit) is introduced to enable the conversion of style representations in low-dimensional space. Finally, the prior knowledge is shared to train the MDT unit by fixing the parameters of the backbone network optimized from the KA process (Knowledge Sharing, KS). In addition, an algorithm based on the dark channel of the image is proposed to improve the transfer of low-contrast features. Specifically, a discriminator is used to discriminate the image dark channel to guide the MDT unit to generate low-contrast style representation conditionally. Meanwhile, color loss is employed to preserve the color feature of the image. By controlling the weights of the style code, this method enables control over the image style transfer process, thereby expanding the variety of image styles in the dataset for the purpose of data augmentation. Tidal energy is considered as one of the most promising forms of renewable energy generation due to its environmental friendliness and predictability. The goal of this work is to conduct a thorough literature review on various approaches for optimizing tidal energy output in Indonesia. Tidal current research published between 2014 and 2022 were chosen for further investigation based on literature criteria. The selected primary papers revealed that contemporary tidal energy research focuses on four subjects and trends: resources, numerical modeling, geographic information systems (GIS), and experimental studies. Tidal streams and stellar shells are naturally formed in galaxy interactions and mergers. The Giant Stellar Stream (GSS), the North-East (NE), and Western (W) stellar shelves observed in Andromeda Galaxy (M31) are examples of these structures and were formed through the merger of M31 and a satellite galaxy. Recent observational papers have provided strong evidence that the shells and GSS originate from a single progenitor. In this paper, we investigate the formation of these two stellar shelves and the detailed nature of their relationship to the GSS. We present numerical simulations of tidal disruption of a satellite galaxy assuming that it is a progenitor of the GSS and the shell system. We represent the progenitor as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with the stellar mass of 109 M⊙ and evolve its merger with M31 for 3 Gyr to reproduce the chemodynamical properties of the NE and W shelves. We find that an initial metallicity of the progenitor with a negative radial gradient of ΔFeH  = −0.3 ± 0.2 successfully reproduces observed metallicities of the NE, W shelves, and the GSS, showing that all these structures can originate from the same merger event. The shapes of galaxies, their outer regions in particular, are important guideposts to their formation and evolution. In this work, we report on the discovery of strongly box-shaped morphologies of the otherwise well-studied elliptical and lenticular galaxies NGC 720 and NGC 2768 from deep imaging. The boxiness is strongly manifested in the parameter shape A4/a of −0.04 in both objects, and significant center shifts of the isophotes of ∼2–4 kpc are also seen. One reason for such asymmetries commonly stated in the literature is a merger origin, although the number of such cases is still sparse, and the exact properties of the individual boxy objects are highly diverse. Indeed, for NGC 2768, we identify a progenitor candidate (dubbed "Pelops") in the residual images, which appears to be a dwarf satellite that is currently merging with NGC 2768. At its absolute magnitude of Mr of −12.2 mag, the corresponding Sersic radius of 2.4 kpc is more extended than those of typical dwarf galaxies from the literature. However, systematically larger radii are known to occur in systems that are in tidal disruption. This finding is bolstered by the presence of a tentative tidal stream feature on archival GALEX data. The current limited efficiency and reliability of tidal current turbines (TCTs) have posed significant challenges in effectively harnessing tidal stream energy. To address this issue, this paper undertakes both numerical and experimental studies to explore the advantages of swept blades over conventional straight blades in terms of energy capture efficiency and cavitation resistance. It is found that both the sweep length and sweep angle of the blade can influence the power generation efficiency of the TCT. For the particular swept blade investigated in this study, the highest power coefficient is achieved when the sweep length is 0.544 m and the sweep angle is 28.88°. The research also demonstrated that the swept-blade TCT shows a higher power generation efficiency than the straight-blade TCT across a broad range of rotor speeds. To be precise, with the swept blades, the power coefficient of the TCT can be improved by 5–17%, depending on the tip speed ratio. Additionally, swept blades exhibit a superior cavitation resistance. Reliable descriptions of erosion events are foundational to effective frameworks relevant to the fate of tidal landscape evolution. Besides the rhythmic, predictable action of tidal currents, erosion in shallow tidal environments is strongly influenced by the stochastic wave-induced bottom shear stress (BSS), mainly responsible for sediment resuspension on tidal flats. However, the absence of sufficiently long, measured time series of BSS prevents a direct analysis of the combined tide- and wave-driven erosion dynamics and its proper representation in long-term morphodynamic models. Here we test the hypothesis of describing erosion dynamics in shallow tidal environments as a Poisson process by analysing, with the peak-over-threshold theory, the BSS time series computed using a fully coupled, bi-dimensional numerical model. We perform this analysis on the Venice Lagoon, Italy, taking advantage of several historical surveys done in the last 4 centuries, which allow us to investigate the effects of morphological modifications on spatial and temporal erosion patterns. Our analysis suggests that erosion events on intertidal flats can effectively be modelled as a marked Poisson process in different morphological configurations because the interarrival times, durations, and intensities of the over-threshold exceedances are always well described by exponentially distributed random variables. The resulting statistical characterization allows a straightforward computation of morphological indicators, such as the erosion work, and paves the way for a novel synthetic, yet reliable, approach for the long-term morphodynamic modelling of tidal environments. Idealized numerical simulations of the Kuroshio western boundary current flowing over the Hirase seamount were conducted to examine the mechanisms of phenomena observed by shipboard and mooring measurements. Along the Kuroshio, enhanced mixing [vertical diffusivity, Kρ = O(10−2) m2 s−1] was observed in a low-stratification layer between high-shear layers around low tide, and a V-shaped band of the negative vertical component of relative vorticity (ζz) was also observed. Those features were reproduced in simulations of the Kuroshio that included the D2 tide. In the simulation, a streak of negative ζz detached from the Hirase turned into vertically tilted 10-km-scale vortices. The buoyancy frequency squared (N2) budget at the mooring position showed that the low stratification was caused by vertical and horizontal advection and horizontal tilting. The Kρ tended to increase when the Ertel potential vorticity (PV) < 0, as expected given the inertial instability. However, the magnitude of Kρ also depended on the tidal phase near Hirase, and Kρ was increased in the high vertical shear zones at the periphery of vortices where a strain motion is large. These results indicate that not only inertial instability but also tidal and vertical shear effects are important for driving turbulent mixing. Significance Statement: A basin-scale distribution of wind stress drives a strong surface-intensified current in the western part of each ocean basin, such as the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio. This western boundary current is regarded as a place where the kinetic energy and vorticity generated by winds are dissipated, allowing the basin-scale circulation to keep a steady state, but its dissipation mechanisms are not well understood. To understand the mechanisms, we conducted idealized numerical simulations that isolate the interactions between a seamount and the current as well as tidal currents, and compared results with observations. Tidal bores form in distinct funnel-shaped estuaries and bays initially and cause unique flow and turbulence dynamics when passing through meandering channels, such as in the Qiantang Estuary, Amazon River Estuary, and Seine River Estuary. To understand the lateral currents and turbulence processes of tidal bores in curved channels, velocity profiles and free-surface elevations are sampled for four semidiurnal tidal cycles in a curved channel located upstream of the Qiantang Estuary. During flood tides, the evolution of lateral currents experiences three distinct phases: first, there are inner-bank-toward lateral currents at the front of tidal bores, followed by two-layer helical currents in the middle of the flood tides, and finally, outer-bank-pointing lateral currents at the end of flood tides. Tidal bore breaking creates outbursts of turbulent kinetic energy. The enhanced turbulence emerges above the middle layers and persists for more than 10 minutes after the breaking front. The lateral momentum balance indicates that the decreasing lateral barotropic pressure gradient (LBTPG) and the increasing summation of centrifugal and Coriolis acceleration give rise to the variation in lateral currents. The phase lead of bores near the outer bank induced by shoal-channel topography generates an inner-bank-pointing LBTPG at the bore front and then gradually weakens it. Significant turbulence following bore breaking may be induced via the wave-induced turbulence mechanism by violent secondary waves. This research shows that complicated lateral currents are an important component of tidal bores flowing through meandering channels and that secondary waves after bore breaking can continually feed turbulence. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to discern and explain the variation in lateral flows and turbulence when tidal bores rush through a curved estuarine channel. Lateral currents and turbulence play important roles in momentum exchange, scalar dispersion, and transverse topography evolution. Moreover, the discussion on lateral flows is necessary to extend the understanding of tidal bore hydrodynamics from the x–z dimension to the x–y–z dimension. In situ observations reveal that a complicated but regular pattern of lateral currents occurred in every tidal cycle and that there was significant turbulence at the tidal bore front. Our findings show that the lateral difference in tidal bore propagation speed caused by shoal-channel topography in the curved bend is an essential reason for the generation of lateral currents and that the secondary waves simulated by bore breaking can continuously feed tidal bore turbulence. Accurate estimates of extreme waves are central for maritime activities, and stochastic wave models are the best option available for practical applications. However, the way currents influence the statistics of space–time extremes in spectral wave models has not been properly assessed. Here we demonstrate impacts of the wave modulation caused by one of the world's strongest open ocean tidal currents, which reaches speeds of at least 3 m s−1. For a bimodal swell and wind sea state, we find that most intense interactions occur when the wind sea opposes the tidal current, with an increase in significant wave height and spectral steepness up to 45% and 167%, respectively. The steepness modulation strengthens the second-order Stokes contribution for the normalized extreme crests, which increases between 5% and 14% during opposing wind sea and current. The normalized extreme wave heights have a strong dependence on the narrow-bandedness parameter, which is sensitive to the variance distribution in the bimodal spectrum, and we find an increase up to 12% with currents opposing the wind sea. In another case of swell opposing a tidal jet, we find the spectral steepness to exceed the increase predicted by a simplified modulation model. We find support in single-point observations that using tidal currents as forcing in wave models improves the representation of the expected maximum waves, but that action must be taken to close the gap of measurements in strong currents. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to investigate how a very strong tidal current affects the surface wave field, and how it changes the stochastic extreme waves formulated for a space–time domain. Our results suggest that the expected maximum waves become more realistic when tidal currents are added as forcing in wave models. Here, the expected extremes exceed traditional model estimates, i.e., without current forcing, by more than 10%. These differences have implications for maritime operations, both in terms of planning of marine structures and for navigational purposes. The Eocene Pinghu Formation in the Xihu Depression of the East China Sea Shelf preserves mixed‐process deltaic deposits and contains a large number of thin coal seams. This study improves the prediction of coal seam occurrences based on facies distribution and stratigraphic architecture models of deltaic deposits, using core and wireline log datasets. Sedimentological analysis reveals four facies associations, which represent delta plain (including distributary channels and interdistributary bays), delta front, prodelta and tidal flat. These facies associations reflect and preserve the interaction of fluvial and marine processes. Delta‐plain and delta‐front deposits record progressively greater tidal influences when traced southward. Well‐log correlations show that coal‐forming mires on the tide‐influenced lower delta plain were relatively favourable for peat accumulation because the stability of the tidal channels led to a stable platform for peat accumulation on the lower delta plain. The temporal and spatial distribution of coal seams is a function of both autogenic and allogenic responses to forcing. Increased probability of frequent changes in subsidence rates and sea‐level in an active tectonic setting and erosion by channels resulted in thin single‐layer coal seams (mostly 0.5 to 1.0 m). Autogenic processes (for example, delta growth and delta lobe switching) played a significant role in the areal distribution, lateral variation in thickness (ranging from 3 to 71 m) and large cumulative thicknesses (up to 71 m) of coal seams. A general vertical decrease in coal seam thickness likely records a cooling palaeoclimate during deposition of the Pinghu Formation. By comparing delta plain processes to favourable environments of peat accumulation in modern systems with favourable mineralogical, chemical and physical conditions, it can be concluded that: (i) relatively few and discontinuous coal seams developed on the tide‐dominated delta plain generated; (ii) laterally discontinuous and ribbon‐shaped coal seams developed in tide‐influenced deltas; whereas (iii) coal seams formed in river‐dominated deltaic environments have better lateral continuity. The Eastern Shore Islands (ESI) archipelago on the Scotian Shelf supports a rich variety of biogenic habitats and associated diversity of coastal species. The unique and complex geometry of the ESI coastline has a significant impact on circulation and, correspondingly, influences the dispersal of nearshore organisms. For many coastal areas, the ability to accurately resolve the dispersal processes is contingent on the availability of oceanographic models that can resolve fine-scale coastal boundary conditions, including coastlines and bathymetric features. We applied a high-resolution ocean circulation model and Lagrangian particle tracking in the ESI to simulate dispersal of nearshore organisms. Our results revealed predominant southwest–northeast transport that was associated with a nearshore reversal flow. While transport among different zones of the study region is mainly determined by residual currents over the long term, tidal currents dominate patterns of particle dispersal over shorter time scales. An analysis of Lagrangian coherent structures found that they were consistently associated with the mouths of bays, demonstrating that the islands and associated oceanographic processes promote self-retention. These results highlight how complex coastlines and associated oceanographic processes promote retention and underline the need to resolve these fine-scale physical and oceanographic features when estimating biophysical dispersal in the coastal environment. Coastal zones supporting diurnal shelf waves near the South Kuril Islands were determined based on the analysis of small-scale amplitude and phase variations of diurnal O1 and K1 tidal waves estimated from along-track TOPEX/Poseidon altimetry data. The amplitudes and phases of these waves were revealed not only along the original tracks (1992–2002), but also along those shifted by half the intertrack distance (2002–2005). This made it possible to more accurately determine the zone supporting diurnal shelf waves. It was found that diurnal shelf waves in the form of baroclinic coastal trapped modes strongly influence tidal motions on the oceanic shelf of Urup and Iturup islands. Two wavelengths fit in this section of the shelf (one pair of quasi-stationary eddies is localized on the shelf of Urup Island and a second one on the shelf of Iturup Island). This is an unexpected result, as barotropic shelf modes usually form one pair of eddies (for example, on the northeastern shelf of Sakhalin Island, on the northern shelf of Hokkaido Island and on the oceanic shelf of the North Kuril Islands). We found that the zone of K1 and O1 tidal waves start from Chirpoi Island, which means that shelf waves are generated as a result of the diffraction of a large-scale Kelvin tidal wave in the deep Bussol Strait. The existence of the lower frequency O1 tidal shelf wave was found not only on the shelf of Urup and Iturup islands, but also on the shelf of Shikotan Island, which is consistent with the earlier results of Yefimov and Rabinovich (1980). Diurnal shelf waves cause significant increases in the O1 and K1 amplitudes on the coast of Iturup Island (especially at its southern part) and on Urup Island in comparison with the open ocean, and produce strong instrumentally-observed diurnal tidal currents in these regions. Baroclinic diurnal shelf (coastal trapped) waves also contribute to vertical movements, forcing water temperature variations at sufficiently great depths, which can have a significant impact on the living conditions of benthic communities. Thin, condensed coarse-grained shallow marine successions can be difficult to describe and interpret, especially in the subsurface since the recognition of finer-grained intervals, typically associated with sequence stratigraphic surfaces, is challenging. This lack of mudstones and siltstones means that they also typically make excellent reservoir intervals. The Oxfordian to Volgian intra-Draupne Formation sandstones in the Johan Sverdrup Field, southern Utsira High, represent such a system. This study presents a new sequence stratigraphic model for the Johan Sverdrup Field that unravels the detailed depositional history of the succession and places its formation within a regional Late Jurassic tectonostratigraphic framework. The intra-Draupne Formation sandstones comprise four parasequences deposited following a regional Kimmeridgian marine flooding event. Sediments were mainly supplied through West-derived fan deltas from the Haugaland High and NW-SE-directed tidal currents reworking the Augvald Graben and the Avaldsnes High at the East. The oldest parasequence shows a distinctive suite of facies consisting of fine-grained and mud-rich bioturbated sandstones deposited in a semi-restricted lagoon. Subsequent parasequences lack fine-grained sediments and are dominated by bidirectional cross-stratified, very coarse-to coarse-grained sandstones and gravels deposited in a tidal strait. A progressive reduction of fault-related subsidence in the Middle Volgian along with Late Volgian-Ryazanian sea-level rise and inversion of pre-existing structures promoted backstepping of the feeder systems, sediment starvation and the progressive deposition of the black and green-red shales of the Draupne and Asgard formations. The results of this study account for features previously unidentified in the Johan Sverdrup Field and which have implications for understanding the deposition of coarse-grained shallow marine successions around the Utsira High and other transgressed basement highs. Catches from the small-scale trap fishery in Bandon Bay, Suratthani, Thailand, were monitored from 14 sites around the Bay, then disturbance to aquatic communities and catch assemblage were examined. At the same time, the hydrographical features of the bay were surveyed. The study was conducted throughout 2019 except in December, when a tropical cyclone made sampling impossible. In total, 17,373 animals from 118 species or species groups of aquatic animals were collected. The main target of the fishery, blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus, contributed about 10% of the total catch in terms of number; meanwhile, another crab, Charybdis affinis, was the most dominant species (41% of total). W-statistics of Abundance-Biomass Comparison curves ranged between -0.025 and 0.031, indicating light disturbance to the communities in this fishing ground. The catch assemblage, based on number in catch composition, were divided into three main clusters and six sub-clusters by using the self-organizing map (SOM) technique. The SOM results showed that the catch assemblages differed based largely on temporal variation. The hydrographic features of Bandon Bay at times exhibited a layered structure and had strong spatial variation. The bay's current system was governed by motion of tidal currents; meanwhile, the circulation was governed by monsoonal wind and freshwater discharges. Tidal current was strong and ranged between approximately 0.6 m to 2.2 m. Water within the bay was always warmer than the outer sea. High water temperature was observed two times during the year: during monsoon transition 1 (April to May) and transition 2 (October). Salinity showed great spatial and temporal variation, differing by more than 5–10 ppt horizontally. Acoustic telemetry provides valuable insights into behavioural patterns of aquatic animals such as downstream migrating European eels (Anguilla anguilla), so called silver eels. The behaviour of silver eels during the migration is known to be influenced by environmental factors, yet so is the performance of acoustic telemetry networks. This study quantifies the impact of these environmental factors on both, migration behaviour and receiver performance to determine possible limiting conditions for detecting tagged eels in tidal areas. A dominance analysis of the selected models describing migration speed, activity and receiver performance was conducted following 234 silver eels that were tagged with acoustic transmitters and observed by a receiver network in the Ems River during two subsequent migration seasons. The results suggest a passive locomotion of silver eels during their downstream migration by taking advantage of selective tidal stream transport (STST). It is further shown that water temperature, salinity, turbidity, precipitation, and especially current velocity were major parameters influencing migration activity and speed. At the same time, analyses of the detection probability of tagged eels under varying environmental conditions indicated a decreased receiver performance during increased current velocities, meaning that high migration activity and -speed coincides with reduced detection probability. Consequently, there is a risk that particularly during phases of increased activity, migration activity may be underestimated due to reduced acoustic telemetry performance. We present multi-sensor measurements from satellites, unmanned aerial vehicle, marine radar, thermal profilers, and repeated conductivity–temperature–depth casts made in the Kara Gates strait connecting the Barents and the Kara Seas during spring tide in August 2021. Analysis of the field data during an 18-h period from four stations provides evidence that a complex sill in the Kara Gates is the site of regular production of intense large-amplitude nonlinear internal waves. Satellite data show a presence of a relatively warm northeastward surface current from the Barents Sea toward the Kara Sea attaining 0.8–0.9 m/s. Triangle-shaped measurements using three thermal profilers revealed pronounced vertical thermocline oscillations up to 40 m associated with propagation of short-period nonlinear internal waves of depression generated by stratified flow passing a system of shallow sills in the strait. The most intense waves were recorded during the ebb tide slackening and reversal when the background flow was predominantly supercritical. Observed internal waves had wavelengths of ~100 m and traveled northeastward with phase speeds of 0.8–0.9 m/s. The total internal wave energy per unit crest length for the largest waves was estimated to be equal to 1.0–1.8 MJ/m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High spatial and temporal resolution hydrographic data collected by Southern Elephant Seals (Mirounga leonina, SESs) and satellite remote sensing data allow a detailed oceanographic description of the Argentine Continental Shelf (ACS). In-situ data were obtained from the CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth), accelerometer, and hydrophone sensors attached to five SESs that crossed the ACS between the 17th and 31st of October 2019. The analysis of the temperature (T) and salinity (S) along the trajectories allowed us to identify two different regions: north and south of 42°S. Satellite Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data suggests that north of 42°S, warm waters are coming from the San Matias Gulf (SMG). The high spatio-temporal resolution of the in-situ data shows regions with intense gradients along the T and S sections that were associated with a seasonal front that develops north of Península Valdés in winter due to the entrance of cold and fresh water to the SMG. The speed of the SESs is correlated with tidal currents in the coastal portion of the northern region, which is in good agreement with the macrotidal regime observed. A large number of Prey Catch Attempts (PCA), a measure obtained from the accelerometer sensor, indicates that SESs also feed in this region, contradicting suggestions from previous works. The analysis of wind intensity estimated from acoustic sensors allowed us to rule out the local wind as the cause of fast thermocline breakups observed along the SESs trajectories. The rapid sediment deposition induced by storm and reclamation has both positive and negative effects on the mangrove. In this study, the rapid sediment deposition is found to cause the mangrove mortality in the Tieshan Harbor of Guangxi Beibu Gulf (GBG). Based on modeling and observational results, the reduced tidal current velocity caused by the wharf construction is not the main reason for the mangrove mortality. The sediment generated from the reclamation overflow, accompanied by the effect of entrance avenue, jointly lead to the rapid sediment deposition in the mangrove region and then contribute to the mangrove mortality. Gale process and drainage outlet also make a subsidiary contribution to the rapid sediment deposition. When the entrance avenue was excavated and the reclamation overflow port was moved as well as the drainage outlets were closed, the biomass and perched density of intertidal animals in the mangrove region obviously increased from January to July 2021, corresponding to the decrease of sediment deposition rate during the period. In this study, the Delft3D-Flow hydrodynamic model was used to determine the characteristics of the main tidal waves and currents in Penzhina Bay (Sea of Okhotsk, Russia). The initial and boundary conditions are set according to the TPXO9 model data, and the salinity and water temperature for each model layer are set based on reanalysis data of the HYCOM ocean general circulation model, with a time step of 3 h. The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-5 reanalysis was used as meteoforcing. Modeling was performed for the ice-free period from May to September 2005. Maps of cotidal lines, tidal ellipses, and reversibility coefficients for the main tidal waves were constructed: semidiurnal wave M2 and diurnal wave K1. The model was verified by comparing the published and calculated harmonic components for nine sea level monitoring points located in Penzhina Bay. Conformance evaluation generally shows a high degree of consistency between the model and reference data. The values of the determination coefficient R2 between the series formed by the model and published harmonic components range from 0.96 to 0.99. According to the magnitude of relative errors, the modeling results are divided into two consistency categories: high (1.48–2.14%) and satisfactory (2.93–4.27%). Spatial distribution patterns for the values of relative errors were not found. A certain inconsistency in the results is presumably due to the time discretization of the observation time support and the short sea level monitoring data series used to calculate the published harmonic components for Penzhina Bay. Energetic tidal currents in the Arctic play an important role in local mixing processes, but they are primarily confined to the shelves and continental slopes due to topographic trapping north of their critical latitude. Recent studies employing idealized models have suggested that the emergence of higher harmonic tidal waves along these slopes could serve as a conduit for tidal energy transmission into the Arctic Basin. Here we provide observational support from an analysis of yearlong observations from three densely-instrumented oceanographic moorings spanning 30 km across the continental slope north of Svalbard (∼ 81.3 ∘ N). Full-depth current records show strong barotropic diurnal tidal currents, dominated by the K 1 constituent. These sub-inertial currents vary sub-seasonally and are strongest at the 700-m isobath due to the topographic trapping. Coinciding with the diurnal tide peak in summer 2019, we observe strong baroclinic semidiurnal currents exceeding 10 cm s - 1 between 500 m and 1000 m depth about 10 km further offshore at the outer mooring. In this semidiurnal band, we identify super-inertial K 2 waves, and present evidence that their frequency, timing, polarization, propagation direction and depths are consistent with the generation as higher harmonics of the topographically trapped K 1 tide at the continental slope. Marine renewable energy (MRE) development will be crucial to achieve worldwide energy decarbonization. In Europe, 1 GW and 40 GW of ocean energy are set to be developed by 2030 and 2050, respectively. Support is essential if wave and tidal stream arrays are to become more economically viable than they currently are. Four recently developed open-access software tools are used in this study to investigate the critical and expensive elements of potential demonstration and commercial scale tidal projects. The tools have been designed and built to assist users with array configurations, foundation and mooring (F&M) design, operation and maintenance (O&M) strategies, and techno-economic analysis. Demonstration of their use is performed in this study to model scenarios for 2 MW, 10 MW, 40 MW, and 100 MW tidal energy projects employing typical 500 kW fixed and 2 MW floating turbines at the West Anglesey Tidal Demonstration Zone in the Irish Sea. The following metrics are examined: the power output and wake losses of staggered and line configurations; the design and costs of simple gravity-based foundations, gravity-based anchors and the four-chain catenary mooring system of a single turbine; the mean O&M costs and farm availability over the project life; and the breakdown of levelized cost of energy (LCoE) for all eight scenarios to ultimately reveal minimum values of 173 EUR/MWh and 147 EUR/MWh for fixed and floating tidal energy technologies, respectively. The thorough analysis facilitated within these four tools to forecast realistic situations in a specific location can help users design a tidal energy project for an area with considerable potential for commercial scale projects, and thus assist the ocean energy community in promoting and nurturing the sector in the years and decades ahead. Research on coastal ocean circulation patterns over long time periods is significant for various marine endeavors: environmental protection, coastal engineering construction, and marine renewable energy extraction. Based on sea surface current data remotely observed using a shore-based high frequency radar (HFR) system for one year (2016), spatiotemporal characteristics of surface flow fields of sea surface flow fields along the west coast of Ireland are studied using harmonic analysis, rotary spectral analysis and representative flow fields over different seasons and the whole year. Coastal surface currents in the study area are strongly affected by tidal dynamics of the M2 constituent, showing significant characteristics of regular semidiurnal tide, such as M2 and S2. The energy spectrum distribution indicates that the tidal constituents M2 and S2 are the dominant periodic energy constituents in a counterclockwise spectrum, which mainly presents rotating flow; the representative diurnal tidal constituents is the constituent K1, and its energy spectrum distribution is mainly clockwise. A comparison between probable maximum current velocity (PMCV) and measured maximum current velocity (MMCV) is presented. It shows that although tidal current characteristics in the study area are significant, the main driving force of the currents at the time of the maximum currents is wind energy. Offshore wind farms (OWFs), built extensively in recent years, induce changes in the surrounding water environment. The changes in the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-aC) induced by an OWF in the Yangtze River Estuary were analyzed based on Chinese Gaofen (GF) satellite data. The results show the following: (1) The flow near the wind turbines makes the bottom water surge, driving the sediment to "re-suspend" and be lost, deepening the scour pit around the bottom of the wind turbines, which is known as "self-digging". The interaction between the pillar of a wind turbine and tidal currents makes hydrodynamic factors more complicated. Blocking by wind turbines promoting the scour of the bottom seabed of the OWF results in speeding up the circulation rate of sediment loss and "re-suspension", which contributes to the change in the SSC and Chl-aC. This kind of change in sediment transport in estuarine areas due to human construction affects the balance of the ecological environment. Long-term sediment loss around wind turbines also influences the safety of wind turbines. (2) The SSC and Chl-aC are mainly in the range of 200–600 mg/L and 3–7 μg/L, respectively, in the OWF area, higher than the values obtained in surrounding waters. The SSC and Chl-aC downstream of the OWF are higher than those upstream, with differences of 100–300 mg/L and 0.5–2 μg/L. High SSC and Chl-aC "tails" appear downstream of wind turbines, consistent with the direction of local tidal currents, with lengths in the range of 2–4 km. In addition, the water environment in the vicinity of a wind turbine array, with a roughly 2–5 km scope (within 4 km during flooding and around 2.5 km during ebbing approximately) downstream of the wind turbine array, is impacted by the OWF. (3) In order to solve the problem of "self-digging" induced by OWFs, it is suggested that the distance between two wind turbines should be controlled within 2–3.5 km in the main flow direction, promising that the second row of wind turbines will be placed on the suspended sediment deposition belt induced by the first row. In this way, the problems of ecosystem imbalance and tidal current structure change caused by sediment loss because of local scouring can be reduced. Wetland shorelines around the world are susceptible to wave erosion. Previous work has suggested that the lateral erosion rate of their cliff-like edges can be predicted as a function of intercepting waves, and yet numerous field studies have shown that other factors, for example, tidal currents or masswasting of differing soil types, induce a wide range of variability. Our objective was to isolate the unique effects of wave heights, wavelengths, and water depths on lateral erosion rates and then synthesize a mechanistic understanding that can be applied globally. We found a potentially universal relationship, where the lateral erosion rates increase exponentially as waves increase in height but decrease exponentially as waves become longer in length. These findings suggest that wetlands and other sheltered coastlines likely experience outsized quantities of erosion, as compared to oceanic-facing coastlines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China's Bohai Bay has experienced large-scale land reclamation since 2000. These reclamation projects create a nearshore ecological imbalance and shift sediment transport by changing the tidal current. However, these tidal current changes are not comprehensively understood. In this paper, the coastline changes in Bohai Bay due to reclamation are investigated and the responses of the tidal current are calculated through numerical methods. The results show that the coastline length of the bay increases by more than 500 km from 2000 to 2015 with the largest reclamation rate of 150.9 km2/a. Consequently, the current velocity changes with an uneven distribution near the reclamation due to construction masking and dike protrusion. The tidal symmetry also changes in most nearshore areas, with opposite variations in the current velocity at peak flood and ebb tide. In addition, the tide direction deflects to bypass the reclamation and is usually consistent with the coastline. Harmonic analysis of the dominant M2 tidal constituent shows that the range of the reciprocating current is widely extended. The total influence of the reclamation can reach the -8-m isobaths in Bohai Bay. Changes in the tidal current are the main causes of water environment deterioration.
