Abstract

Since the first report of a novel disease caused by tilapia lake virus (TiLV) in 2014, the disease (TiLVD) has gained considerable attention as one of the most devastating viral diseases in tilapia aquaculture globally. The virus is both highly virulent and transmissible and has been detected in many countries worldwide. It poses a severe threat to the global tilapia aquaculture industry, food security and many people's livelihoods in low and middle‐income countries. The absence of effective treatment strategies and inadequate biosecurity measures means the virus's rapid spread is likely to continue. Vaccination has proven to be an effective approach to preventing and controlling disease in finfish aquaculture. The vaccine's efficacy and the delivery system's suitability are essential for evoking an appropriate immune response against the pathogen. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the strategies being used to develop vaccines for TiLVD. Nanovaccines, which offer a new approach to prevent TiLVD in farmed tilapia, are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The contribution of seafood to global food security is being increasingly highlighted in policy. However, the extent to which such claims are supported in the current food security literature is unclear. This review assesses the extent to which seafood is represented in the recent food security literature, both individually and from a food systems perspective, in combination with terrestrially-based production systems. The results demonstrate that seafood remains under-researched compared to the role of terrestrial animal and plant production in food security. Furthermore, seafood and terrestrial production remain siloed, with very few papers addressing the combined contribution or relations between terrestrial and aquatic systems. We conclude that far more attention is needed to the specific and relative role of seafood in global food security and call for the integration of seafood in a wider interdisciplinary approach to global food system research.

Abstract

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) is the causative agent of a highly infectious and notifiable disease of Cyprinus carpio L. Serology has the potential to identify koi or carp that have been previously exposed to KHV and which may be possible carriers of the virus. In the present study, sera (n = 162) from groups of farmed koi carp, previously screened for KHV using a variety of molecular methods as part of a surveillance program in Asia from 2008 to 2010, were subsequently tested here individually by ELISA using plates coated with purified virus (American isolate KHV-I, H361). Only 31% of koi from PCR-positive KHV fish groups or populations associated with KHV disease (n = 59/162) were seropositive when screened in the ELISA at a serum dilution of 1/200, in contrast to 52.9% of seropositive koi that were KHV-negative by PCR (n = 103/162). Furthermore >34% of those seropositive/PCR negative fish had titres of >1/400 (moderate-strong responders). This field data highlights the concerns related to carp populations that have been screened for KHV using molecular methods alone and supports the need for serology to accompany molecular testing in carp for this notifiable virus.

Abstract

Various emerging and re‐emerging diseases, such as streptococcosis, tilapia lake virus disease and infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus disease, have had a significant economic impact on the tilapia industry over the last decade. These diseases have resulted in high levels of morbidity and mortality, production losses and trade restrictions. In the absence of effective husbandry management, disease prevention strategies and appropriate biosecurity measures, infectious diseases will continue to challenge the sustainability of global tilapia aquaculture. Strategies used to reduce the impact of disease include feeding probiotic and prebiotic supplements to enhance tilapia health and to modulate the fish's gut microbiota to improve gut health. Herbal medicines and immunostimulants are also used to enhance immunity to disease, while vaccines are available, or are under development, for a number of economically important pathogens affecting tilapia culture. This review provides an overview of the benefits of enhancing the immune response of tilapia to improve their health, and in turn reduce the levels of pathogens within tilapia farming systems. 49. Proteomic characterisation of serum proteins from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) from an outbreak with Cardiomyopathy Syndrome:Serum proteomics of salmon infected with CMS

Abstract

Cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS), caused by piscine myocarditis virus (PMCV), is a serious challenge to Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) aquaculture. Regrettably, husbandry techniques are the only tool to manage CMS outbreaks, and no prophylactic measures are available at present. Early diagnosis of CMS is therefore desirable, preferably with non-lethal diagnostic methods, such as serum biomarkers. To identify candidate biomarkers for CMS, the protein content of pools of sera (4 fish/pool) from salmon a CMS outbreak (3 pools) and from clinically healthy salmon (3 pools) were compared using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). Overall, seven proteins were uniquely identified in the sera of clinically healthy fish, while twenty seven proteins were unique to the sera of CMS fish. Of the latter, 24 have been associated with cardiac disease in humans. These were grouped as leakage enzymes (creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, glycogen phosphorylase and carbonic anhydrase); host reaction proteins (acute phase response proteins - haptoglobin, fibrinogen, α2-macroglobulin, ceruloplasmin; and complement-related proteins); and regeneration/remodelling proteins (fibronectin, lumican and retinol). Clinical evaluation of the suitability of these proteins as biomarkers of CMS, either individually or as part of a panel, is a logical next step for the development of early diagnostic tools for CMS.
