Rapid organic synthesis in reduced steps achieves cost-effectiveness by decreasing both the time and amount of material used to complete a reaction. This study explored the use of microwaves as an alternate energy source to drive the synthesis of thiols from their corresponding halides using potassium thioacetate as an inexpensive thiol source. Departing from previous synthetic routes, which require multiple steps and intermediate product isolation, the reported one-pot synthesis allows for direct conversion of the halide starting material to the corresponding thiol. This method works for alkyl halides, including straight chain, branched, or cyclic. This improved methodology was 6 to 24 times faster than previously reported synthetic methodologies and produced isolated yields of > 90%, a 1.25-fold improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
