Objective: The study aims to determine the vaccination status of children and evaluate the relationship between vaccination rates, vaccine attitudes, and some parental health practices. Design and Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted with 674 mothers. Data were collected using a survey evaluating vaccine characteristics, some infant health practices, and The Public Attitude Toward Vaccination Scale—Health Belief Model. Chi‐square test, independent samples t‐test, and logistic regression analysis were used. Results: 80.2% of children were fully vaccinated. The rate of non or under‐vaccination was higher in the group that did not regularly undergo follow‐up for 0–2‐year‐old children, did not fully have health screenings, did not use vitamin D and iron supplements, and used alternative medicine. Moreover, the duration of breast milk feeding, the transition to supplementary food, and the duration of vitamin D use in the non‐fully vaccinated group were lower than in the fully vaccinated group (p <.05). The increase in maternal education period and severity and benefit attitude scores of vaccine attitude were the factors that decreased the rate of non‐fully vaccination. The increase in barrier scores toward vaccines increased the rate of non or under‐vaccination. Background: Preeclampsia is a life-threatening multisystem disorder of pregnancy which has been observed in 2%–10% of pregnancies. The prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency ranges from 15% to 80%. Deficiency of Vitamin D is associated with the development of preeclampsia. This study was done to find out the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency among preeclamptic/eclamptic and normal pregnant females, to establish Vitamin D deficiency as a causal factor of preeclampsia, and to elucidate the relation between 25 (OH) Vitamin D status and the severe preeclampsia. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were collected from 50 normotensives (controls) and 50 hypertensive pregnant females with preeclampsia/eclampsia (cases), and 25 (OH) Vitamin D level was measured by chemiluminescence Immunoassay. Results: Among the preeclamptic/eclamptic group, 32 (64%) were noted with Vitamin D deficiency and 18 (36%) with Vitamin D insufficiency. In the control group, 30 (60%) pregnant women showed Vitamin D deficiency, 19 (38%) with Vitamin D insufficiency, and a sufficient level of Vitamin D was observed in one woman (2%). Conclusion: Although it is difficult to demonstrate the correlation between Vitamin D levels and preeclampsia, there is a widespread global prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy. Background: Dietary supplement (DS) use is common and increasing among older adults, though much data available on use frequencies are from surveys and performed cross-sectionally. This paper sought to assess the frequency and pattern of dietary supplement use among older adults over time. Methods: A secondary analysis of data from the AAA LongROAD study, a longitudinal prospective cohort study of older adult drivers, using data from baseline and the first two years of follow up included a total of 2990 drivers aged 65–79 years recruited at five study sites across the US from July 2015 to March 2017. Participants underwent baseline and annual evaluations, which included a "brown bag" medication review. DS were identified and categorized according to type and key components. Prevalence and pattern of DS use over time and relationship to demographics were measured with frequency and Chi squared analyses. Results: 84% of participants took at least one dietary supplement during the 2-year study period, and 55% of participants continually reported use. DS accounted for approximately 30% of the total pharmacologic-pill burden in all years. Participants who were White non-Hispanic, female, 75–79 years of age at baseline, and on more non-supplement medications took significantly more dietary supplements (P < 0.05). Vitamin D, multivitamins, calcium, and omega-3 formulations were the most common supplements, with stable use over time. Use of individual herbal supplements and cannabis products was uncommon (< 1% participants per year). Conclusions: DS use among older adults is common and relatively stable over time and contributes to polypharmacy. In clinical settings, providers should consider the influence of DS formulations on polypharmacy, and the associated cost, risk of medication interactions, and effect on medication compliance. Background: Regional evidence on the role of vitamin D in the prevention of COVID-19 and its sequalae remains inconclusive and sparse. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of COVID-19 status and severity with vitamin D among adults in Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Methods: A sex-matched case–control study was conducted among 104 RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients recruited from two major hospitals designated as COVID-19 treating centres and 104 RT-PCR negative adults recruited from the catchment area of the two hospitals. Non-fasting blood samples obtained from cases upon hospital admission and from controls upon release from 14-day quarantine period were analysed for serum 25(OH)D using chemiluminescence assay. Serum level < 50.0 nmol/L was identified as vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Results: Cases were older while the controls had fewer persons with co-morbidities. Cases (median = 30.0; IQR = 21.2 nmol/L) had significantly lower 25(OH)D compared to controls (median = 35.9; IQR = 28.3 nmol/L) (p = 0.02), which persisted after adjustments (p = 0.026), along with Sinhalese ethnicity (p < 0.001). VDD was significantly more prevalent in cases (83.7% vs. 71.2%; crude odds ratio (OR) = 2.1; 95% CI 1.1, 4.1); but was not an independent predictor of COVID-19 status (adjusted OR = 1.9; 95% CI 0.6, 5.7). A lower 25(OH)D level was observed in moderate/severe cases (median = 28.0; IQR = 20.4 nmol/L) vs. mild (median = 39.8; IQR = 19.0 nmol/L), however, neither low serum concentrations nor deficiency showed an independent relationship with severity (p > 0.05). Diabetes was the sole predictor of COVID-19 severity (p = 0.022). Conclusions: Vitamin D has potential as a primary preventive strategy in preventing COVID-19 like infections, but not as a secondary preventive strategy to reduce its severity. This study aimed to examine the clinical impact of vitamin D supplementation combined with exercise during pregnancy among patients with gestational diabetes mellitus. Pregnant women (n = 120) were divided into a control group and an exercise group, with 60 patients in each group. Participants in both groups received 400 IU of oral vitamin D drops daily between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation. Before delivery, the pregnant women in the control group did not receive exercise intervention, while those in the exercise group received physical exercise intervention. Fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance levels, and proinflammatory factor levels among pregnant women in the exercise group were lower than those among pregnant women in the control group. At birth, the neonatal weight and head circumference in exercise group were lower than control group. No statistical significance was observed in neonatal age (weeks) between both groups. Vitamin D intervention combined with physical exercise during pregnancy can elevate vitamin D levels in women with gestational diabetes mellitus and reduce newborn weight, effectively reversing the effects of gestational diabetes mellitus on newborns. This research utilized a network meta-analysis to conduct a comparative analysis of the efficacy of six prevalent nutraceuticals purported to ameliorate sleep disorders. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted utilizing PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database to uncover the efficacy of vitamin D, traditional Chinese medicine containing Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) and saffron as the main ingredients, L-theanine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, melatonin, and precursors of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide for mitigating sleep disorders which is evaluated by The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Through the literature selection process, 16 studies, involving a sample size of 1,038, are utilized in our network meta-analysis, conducted by using R software. The results reveal that, compared to placebo, vitamin D and traditional Chinese medicine demonstrate a significantly superior efficacy in reducing the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. On the other hand, no significant difference in efficacy is observed from the treatment with L-theanine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, melatonin, and precursors of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. Therefore, this study advocates that treatment with vitamin D or traditional Chinese medicine may be more efficient in ameliorating sleep disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Inflammation is the hallmark of critical illness and triggers the neuro-endocrine stress response and an oxidative stress. Acute inflammation is initially essential for patient's survival. However, ongoing or exaggerated inflammation, due to persistent organ dysfunction, immune dysfunction or poor inflammation resolution, is associated to subsequent hypermetabolism and hypercatabolism that severely impact short and long-term functional status, autonomy, as well as health-related costs. Modulation of inflammation is thus tempting, with the goal to improve the short- and long-term outcomes of critically ill patients. Findings: Inflammation can be modulated by nutritional strategies (including the timing of enteral nutrition initiation, the provision of some specific macronutrients or micronutrients, the use of probiotics) and metabolic treatments. The most interesting strategies seem to be n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamin D, antioxidant micronutrients and propranolol, given their safety, their accessibility for clinical use, and their benefits in clinical studies in the specific context of critical care. However, the optimal doses, timing and route of administration are still unknown for most of them. Furthermore, their use in the recovery phase is not well studied and defined. Conclusion: The rationale to use strategies of inflammation modulation is obvious, based on critical illness pathophysiology and based on the increasingly described effects of some nutritional and pharmacological strategies. Regretfully, there isn't always substantial proof from clinical research regarding the positive impacts directly brought about by inflammation modulation. Some arguments come from studies performed in severe burn patients, but such results should be transposed to non-burn patients with caution. Vitamin D is important for musculoskeletal health. Concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the most commonly measured metabolite, vary markedly around the world and are influenced by many factors including sun exposure, skin pigmentation, covering, season and supplement use. Whilst overt vitamin D deficiency with biochemical consequences presents an increased risk of severe sequelae such as rickets, osteomalacia or cardiomyopathy and usually warrants prompt replacement treatment, the role of vitamin D supplementation in the population presents a different set of considerations. Here the issue is to keep, on average, the population at a level whereby the risk of adverse health outcomes in the population is minimised. This position paper, which complements recently published work from the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, addresses key considerations regarding vitamin D assessment and intervention from the population perspective. Summary: This position paper, on behalf of the International Osteoporosis Foundation Vitamin D Working Group, summarises the burden and possible amelioration of vitamin D deficiency in global populations. Summary: Our review of 52 RCTs from 5 databases suggests a tendency for notable improvement in BMD when combining herbal medicine with supplements (calcium and vitamin D variants) compared to supplement monotherapy in primary osteoporosis. However, caution is needed in interpreting results due to substantial heterogeneity among included studies. Purpose: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether herbal medicine (HM) plus supplements such as calcium (Ca) or vitamin D (Vit.D) improves bone mineral density (BMD) compared to supplements alone in primary osteoporosis (OP) patients. Methods: We searched 5 databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using HMs with supplements (Ca or Vit.D variants) as interventions for primary OP patients published until August 31, 2022. Meta-analysis using BMD score as the primary outcome was performed using RevMan 5.4 version. Risk of bias in the included studies was assessed useing RoB 2.0 tool. Results: In total, 52 RCTs involving 4,889 participants (1,408 men, 3,481 women) were included, with average BMD scores of 0.690 ± 0.095 g/cm2 (lumbar) and 0.625 ± 0.090 g/cm2 (femoral neck). As a result of performing meta-analysis using BMD scores for all 52 RCTs included in this review, combination of HMs with Ca and Vit.D variants improved the BMD score by 0.08 g/cm2 (lumbar, 38 RCTs, 95% CI: 0.06–0.10, p < 0.001, I2 = 97%) and 0.06 g/cm2 (femoral neck, 19 RCTs, 95% CI: 0.04–0.08, p < 0.001, I2 = 92%)compared to controls. However, statistical significance of the lumbar BMD improvement disappeared after adjusting for potential publication bias. Conclusion: Our data suggest that combining of HM and supplements tends to be more effective in improving BMD in primary OP than supplements alone. However, caution is needed in interpretation due to the reporting bias and high heterogeneity among studies, and well-designed RCTs are required in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Vertebral fragility fractures (VFFs) commonly result from low bone mass and microarchitecture deterioration of bone tissue. spinal orthoses are common non-pharmacological options for managing vertebral fracture pain. However, the effects of spinal orthoses on pain, physical functioning, and quality of life (QoL) are still debated. OBJECTIVE: This survey aimed to investigate the patients-reported outcomes of a dynamic spinal orthosis prescribed in the routine clinical practice of VFFs management. METHODS: This multi-center national-wide prospective cohort study assessed older patients (aged > 60 years) diagnosed with acute VFFs and prescribed with a dynamic spinal orthosis (Spinfast®). A survey questionnaire was realized and included sections on patient characterization, osteoporosis characterization, spinal orthosis, clinical outcomes, pain medications, and osteoporosis medications. The questionnaire was administered at baseline and after three months. A total of 68 patients completed the questionnaire at three months. Most patients had one or two VFFs and were treated with pain medications and osteoporosis medications. Compliance and tolerability of the spinal orthosis were assessed, and clinical outcomes such as pain intensity, physical functioning, and QoL were measured. RESULTS: The results showed no significant differences in outcomes between age subgroups. Italian physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians were commonly involved in the management of VFFs patients. Sixty-six patients completed the questionnaire. The results showed that pain intensity, physical functioning and QoL improved after three months of spinal orthosis wearing (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: The correct management of VFFs is mandatory to improve pain and reduce disability, and our findings suggested a positive role of dynamic spinal orthosis to improve the comprehensive management of VFFs patients. Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer among women globally. Vitamin D has been considered a protective factor; however, its relationship with any aspect of the disease remains controversial. Methods: A cross-sectional, single-center clinical study was conducted between 2015 and 2018, including 141 women diagnosed with BC and 239 women in the control group, with mean ages of 43.1 and 41.7 years, respectively (p = 0.103). Serum levels of vitamin D and lipid profile were measured. Clinical and nutritional data were obtained through interviews and medical records. Results: The vitamin D dosage presented an average value of 25.5 ng/mL and 31.0 ng/mL in the case and control groups, respectively (p < 0.001). The vitamin D cut-off point for discriminating the presence of BC was 27.45 ng/mL. Additionally, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were higher in the case group (121.4 mg/dL) compared to the control group (110.7 mg/dL) (p = 0.002), whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower in the case group (47.6 mg/dL) compared to the control group (53.3 mg/dL) (p = 0.001). Alcohol consumption was significantly higher in the case group than in the control group (2.7 vs. 5.3 doses/day; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The results indicate a significant association between lower vitamin D levels and BC, persisting after multivariate analysis (p < 0.001). Longitudinal bone growth is mediated through several mechanisms including macro- and micronutrients, and endocrine and paracrine hormones. These mechanisms can be affected by childhood obesity as excess adiposity may affect signaling pathways, place undue stress on the body, and affect normal physiology. This review describes the physiology of the epiphyseal growth plate, its regulation under healthy weight and obesity parameters, and bone pathology following obesity. A literature review was performed utilizing PubMed, PMC, NIH, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews pertinent to hormonal and nutritional effects on bone development, child obesity, and pathologic bone development related to weight. The review indicates a complex network of nutrients, hormones, and multi-system interactions mediates long bone growth. As growth of long bones occurs during childhood and the pubertal growth spurt, pediatric bones require adequate levels of minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and a base caloric supply for energy. Recommendations should focus on a nutrient-dense dietary approach rather than restrictive caloric diets to maintain optimal health. In conclusion, childhood obesity has profound multifaceted effects on the developing musculoskeletal system, ultimately causing poor nutritional status during development. Background and Aim: Evidence suggests a beneficial effect of sun exposure on type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). However, little is known about the characteristics of sun exposure among DM patients or individuals at risk of developing DM. The aim of this study was to analyze the sun exposure behaviors of individuals diagnosed with DM and those susceptible to developing DM within a semi-urban community in North India. Materials and Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in northern India with 494 participants aged 25-60, with or without DM. The participants' sun exposure characteristics were assessed through a sunlight exposure questionnaire, and total sun exposure in a day was computed using the veritable sun exposure (VSE) index. Fasting blood sugar, anthropometric measurements, and demographic details were also collected. Results: The study had 56.5% female participants, and 9.1% of the participants had DM. The VSE of the study participants ranged from 0.01 to 0.81, with a mean of 0.15 (±0.14) and a median of 0.10, indicating that more than half of the study samples had less than 10% h/day of sunlight exposure. The use of sunscreen, gender, and disease status all influenced VSE. Our data suggest that the characteristics of sun exposure among Indians significantly deviate from standard recommendations. Conclusion: Our results propose a need for evidence-based guidelines and policies that promote awareness about sun exposure among DM patients as well as those at risk of developing DM. Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem chronic autoimmune disease characterized by recurrent and relapsing attacks that may affect the locomotor system as well as the liver and kidneys. Vitamin D deficiency is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of SLE. Therefore, the primary aim of this literature review is to determine the role of vitamin D deficiency on SLE symptoms. The secondary aim is to explain the benefits of exercise on SLE-related comorbidities. Methods: A comprehensive literature search on SLE symptoms, biochemistry, and pathophysiology was conducted via Google Scholar. The impact of exercise on comorbidities associated with SLE was examined. Results: The precise etiology of the disease remains elusive, although there is mounting evidence that vitamin D deficiency is associated with symptoms of SLE. In addition to pharmacological treatment for the involvement of the locomotor system in SLE patients, physiotherapy applications are also included. This review presents evidence of the positive effects of exercise on pain, fatigue, and sleep problems caused by disease-related or side effects of pharmacological applications used in the treatment of SLE patients. Conclusions: It is not possible to correct the symptoms of SLE associated with vitamin D deficiency by means of vitamin D supplementation alone. At this juncture, it is hypothesized that exercise may offer potential benefits in correcting vitamin D deficiency. Consequently, exercise exerts a beneficial influence on the comorbidities associated with SLE. Future studies should be planned to establish an appropriate exercise prescription for SLE. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of vitamin D and/or calcium supplementation on sleep quality in individuals with prediabetes. Methods: A 24-week randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in a 212 Chinese population with prediabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to four groups: vitamin D + calcium group (1600 IU/day + 500 mg/day, n = 53), vitamin D group (1600 IU/day, n = 54), calcium group (500 mg/day, n = 51), and control group (placebo, n = 54). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used as the primary outcome to assess sleep quality. Questionnaires and fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and post-intervention for demographic assessment and correlation index analysis. Results: After a 24-week intervention, a significant difference was observed in serum 25(OH)D concentration among the four groups (P < 0.05), and the total PSQI score in vitamin D + calcium group was lower compared to the preintervention levels. Subgroup analyses revealed improved sleep quality with calcium supplementation (P < 0.05) for specific groups, including women, individuals with a low baseline 25(OH)D level (< 30 ng/mL), and individuals in menopause. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between the extent of change in sleep efficiency scores before and after the calcium intervention and the degree of change in insulin efficiency scores (r = − 0.264, P = 0.007), as well as the magnitude of change in islet beta cell function (r = − 0.304, P = 0.002). Conclusions: The combined intervention of vitamin D and calcium, as well as calcium interventions alone, exhibits substantial potential for improving sleep quality in individuals with prediabetes. Objective: In the 5.3‐year randomized, 2 × 2 factorial, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled Vitamin D and Omega‐3 Trial (VITAL), vitamin D supplementation reduced autoimmune disease (AD) incidence (hazard ratio [HR] 0.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.61–0.99). Omega‐3 (n‐3) fatty acid supplementation showed a statistically nonsignificant reduction (HR 0.85, 95% CI 0.67–1.08). We aimed to confirm further AD cases arising during and after randomization and assess sustained effects with two years of postintervention observation. Methods: Of the 12,786 men aged ≥50 and 13,085 women aged ≥55 initially randomized, we observed surviving and willing participants for two more years. We continued to confirm annual participant‐reported new AD by medical record review. Cox models calculated HRs for all confirmed incident AD, (and secondary endpoints, including probable cases, and individual ADs), during the observational and randomized periods. Results: A total of 21,592 participants (83.5%) were observed for two more years; 514 participants developed incident confirmed AD (236 since prior report), of whom 255 had been randomized to vitamin D versus 259 to vitamin D placebo (HR 0.98 [95% CI 0.83–1.17] at 7 years). AD was confirmed in 234 participants initially randomized to n‐3 fatty acids versus 280 randomized to its placebo (HR 0.83 [95% CI 0.70–0.99] at 7 years). Of newly confirmed cases, 65 had onset during randomization; their inclusion changed randomized results as follows: HR 0.85 (95% CI 0.70–1.04) for vitamin D and HR 0.87 (95% CI 0.71–1.06) for n‐3 fatty acids. Conclusion: Two years after trial termination, the protective effects of 2000 IU/day of vitamin D dissipated, but 1,000 mg/day of n‐3 fatty acids had a sustained effect in reducing AD incidence. Thyroidectomy is a frequent surgical procedure to treat both malignant and some benign forms of thyroid disease. Hypocalcemia is a prevalent complication in individuals who underwent thyroidectomy, which is typically treated with intravenous or oral calcium treatment. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the efficacy of preoperative vitamin D (VD) or calcium supplementation in preventing hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy. Relevant studies were identified through a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library databases. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to evaluate study quality. The pooled data from relevant studies were analyzed using Review Manager 4.1 and Stata 14.0. All dichotomous variables were subjected to the calculation of 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and odds ratios (ORs). In total, this meta-analysis included 8 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) encompassing 930 patients (740 women, 190 men) who had thyroidectomy alone or in conjunction with additional neck surgery procedures. Significant decreases in hypocalcemia incidence were observed when patients underwent preoperative calcium or vitamin D supplementation (OR 0.59 (95% CI, 0.44–0.81); P = 0.0009), although such preoperative supplementation had no impact on the length of hospitalization due to hypocalcemia as compared to the absence of any prophylactic treatment (OR −0.02 (95% CI, −0.32–0.29); P = 0.91). Preoperative calcium or vitamin D supplementation decreased overall hypocalcemia rates in patients who underwent thyroidectomy. The combination of vitamin D and calcium intake was superior to vitamin D alone in preventing postoperative hypocalcemia. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is standard, first-line therapy for many aspects of prostate cancer treatment. Although ADT can be an effective treatment to inhibit androgen-fueled cell growth in prostate cancer, suppression has significant side effects, including the development or exacerbation of underlying osteoporosis. Patients may be unaware of the adverse effects on bone health and muscle strength commonly associated with ADT. Practice standards require consistent screening of all patients with prostate cancer before ADT initiation to facilitate optimal baseline and subsequent osteoporosis management. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, China Biomedical Literature Database and other databases from inception to June 2023. The included studies were randomised controlled trials (RCT). The studies were screened by four authors, divided into two independent pairs. A total of eighteen studies were included, including 1362 patients, involving twelve intervention measures. The different nutrients had a significant effect on improving blood glucose, reducing inflammation levels and reducing oxidative stress compared with placebo (P < 0.05). Cumulative probability ranking showed that vitamin A + vitamin D + vitamin E ranked first in lowering fasting blood glucose (standardised mean difference (SMD) = 41.30, 95 % CI (2.07, 825.60)) and postprandial 2-h blood glucose (SMD = 15.19, 95 % CI (4.16, 55.53)). In terms of insulin resistance index, the first highest probability ranking is vitamin D (SMD = 5.12, 95 % CI (0.76, 34.54)). In terms of reducing the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level, the first in probability ranking is VE (SMD = 2.58, 95 % CI (1.87,3.55)). The results of cumulative probability ranking showed that Mg + Zn + Ca + VD ranked first in reducing TNF-α (SMD = 1.90, 95% CI (0.40, 9.08)) and IL-6 (SMD = 1.83, 95 % CI (0.37, 9.12)). In terms of reducing malondialdehyde levels, the first ranked probability is VB1 (SMD = 4.99, 95 % CI (1.85, 13.46)). Cumulative probability ranking results showed that Ca + VD ranked first in reducing total antioxidant capacity (SMD = 0.66,95 % CI (0.38, 1.15)) and glutathione (SMD = 1.39, 95 % CI (0.43, 4.56)). In conclusion, nutritional interventions have significant effects on improving blood glucose, inflammatory levels and oxidative stress in patients with gestational diabetes. Due to the high uncertainty in the results and differences in the number and quality of studies included, the reliability of the conclusions still needs to be validated by conducting large-sample, high-quality RCT studies. Context Vitamin D plays an important role in immune function, and the deficiency thereof has been associated with several infections, most notably respiratory tract infections. However, data from intervention studies investigating the effect of high-dose vitamin D supplementation on infections have been inconclusive. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of evidence regarding the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation above the standard dose (400 IU) in preventing infections in apparently healthy children < 5 years of age. Data Sources PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and MEDLINE electronic databases were searched between August 2022 and November 2022. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Data Extraction Meta-analyses of outcomes in more than one study were performed using Review Manager software. Heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 statistic. Randomized controlled trials in which vitamin D was supplemented at > 400 IU compared with placebo, no treatment, or standard dose were included. Data Analysis Seven trials that enrolled a total of 5748 children were included. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95%CIs were calculated using random- and fixed-effects models. There was no significant effect of high-dose vitamin D supplementation on the incidence of upper respiratory tract infection (OR, 0.83; 95%CI, 0.62–1.10). There was a 57% (95%CI, 0.30–0.61), 56% (95%CI, 0.27–0.07), and 59% (95%CI, 0.26–0.65) reduction in the odds of influenza/cold, cough, and fever incidence, respectively, with daily supplementation of vitamin D > 1000 IU. No effect was found on bronchitis, otitis media, diarrhea/gastroenteritis, primary care visits for infections, hospitalizations, or mortality. Conclusion High-dose vitamin D supplementation provided no benefit in preventing upper respiratory tract infections (moderate certainty of evidence) but reduced the incidence influenza/cold (moderate certainty of evidence), cough, and fever (low certainty of evidence). Context There is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and impaired cognitive function in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Objective To critically and systematically review the literature on the association between vitamin D status and cognitive performance in people with type 2 diabetes. Data Sources This review was conducted according to PRISMA recommendations. MEDLINE, SCOPUS, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched using the terms "Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2", "Cognitive Function", and "Vitamin D". Data Extraction Eight observational and 1 randomized study were included, containing data of 14 648 adult and elderly individuals (19–74 y). All extracted data were compiled, compared, and critically analyzed. Data Analysis There is no strong evidence that lower serum concentrations of vitamin D and vitamin D–binding protein are associated with worsening cognitive function in individuals with T2DM. Vitamin D supplementation (12 wk) improved the scores of some executive functioning tests, although there was no difference between low doses (5000 IU/wk) and high doses (50 000 IU/wk). Conclusions There is no high-quality evidence demonstrating an association between vitamin D status and cognitive function, or clinical benefits on cognition from vitamin D supplementation in individuals with T2DM. Summary: With the analysis of nationwide health claim data, treatment with the composite agent of SERMs and vitamin D reduces the risk of osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture better compared to SERMs treatment in women with osteoporosis aged ≥ 50 years. Purpose: This study compared the potential of the composite agent of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and vitamin D (SERM + VitD) with that of SERMs-only for fracture prevention and mortality reduction in women aged ≥ 50 years. Methods: The incidence of osteoporotic fracture (fractures of the vertebrae, hip, wrist, or humerus) and all-cause death after treatment with SERM + VitD and SERMs were characterized using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database 2017–2019. The participants were divided into two groups (SERM + VitD vs SERMs). After exclusion and propensity score matching, 2,885 patients from each group were included in the analysis. Fracture incidence was compared between groups. Kaplan–Meier curves were used to compare mortality. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to compare the risks of fracture occurrence and mortality between the groups. Results: The incidence rate (138.6/10,000 vs. 192.4/10,000 person-years), and risk of osteoporotic fractures (hazard ratio [HR], 0.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61–0.97; p = 0.024) were lower in the SERM + VitD group than in the SERMs group. Analysis for specific fractures showed a lower hazard of hip fracture in the SERM + VitD group (HR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.09–0.71; p = 0.009). No difference was observed between the groups regarding mortality. Conclusion: The risk of osteoporotic fractures, especially hip fractures, was lower in the SERM + VitD group than in the SERMs group. Context Chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to alterations in fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and the renal-bone axis. This may be partly driven by altered inflammation and iron status. Vitamin D supplementation may reduce inflammation. Objective and methods Older adults with early CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 30–60 ml/min/1.73 m2; CKDG3a/b; n  = 35) or normal renal function (eGFR >90 ml/min/1.73 m2; CKDG1; n  = 35) received 12,000, 24,000 or 48,000 IU D3/month for 1 year. Markers of the renal-bone axis, inflammation and iron status were investigated pre- and post-supplementation. Predictors of c-terminal and intact FGF23 (cFGF23; iFGF23) were identified by univariate and multivariate regression. Results Pre-supplementation, comparing CKDG3a/b to CKDG1, plasma cFGF23, iFGF23, PTH, sclerostin and TNFα were significantly higher and Klotho, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and iron were lower. Post-supplementation, only cFGF23, 25(OH)D and IL6 differed between groups. The response to supplementation differed between eGFR groups. Only in the CKDG1 group, phosphate decreased, cFGF23, iFGF23 and procollagen type I N-propeptide increased. In the CKDG3a/b group, TNFα significantly decreased, and iron increased. Plasma 25(OH)D and IL10 increased, and carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks decreased in both groups. In univariate models cFGF23 and iFGF23 were predicted by eGFR and regulators of calcium and phosphate metabolism at both time points; IL6 predicted cFGF23 (post-supplementation) and iFGF23 (pre-supplementation) in univariate models. Hepcidin predicted post-supplementation cFGF23 in multivariate models with eGFR. Conclusion Alterations in regulators of the renal-bone axis, inflammation and iron status were found in early CKD. Deprescribing opportunities may differ across health care systems, nursing home settings, and prescribing cultures. The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of STOPPFrail medications according to frailty status among residents of nursing homes in Australia, China, Japan, and Spain. Secondary cross-sectional analyses of data from 4 cohort studies. A total of 1142 residents in 31 nursing homes. Medication data were extracted from resident records. Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL-NH scale (non-frail 0–2; frail 3–6; most-frail 7–14). Chi-square tests and prevalence ratios (PRs) were used to compare STOPPFrail medication use across cohorts. In total, 84.7% of non-frail, 95.6% of frail, and 90.6% of most-frail residents received ≥1 STOPPFrail medication. Overall, the most prevalent STOPPFrail medications were antihypertensives (53.0% in China to 73.3% in Australia, P <.001), vitamin D (nil in China to 52.7% in Australia, P <.001), lipid-lowering therapies (11.1% in Japan to 38.9% in Australia, P <.001), aspirin (13.5% in Japan to 26.2% in China, P <.001), proton pump inhibitors (2.1% in Japan to 32.0% in Australia, P <.001), and antidiabetic medications (12.3% in Japan to 23.5% in China, P =.010). Overall use of antihypertensives (PR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.06–1.25), lipid-lowering therapies (PR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.45–2.18), aspirin (PR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.04–1.64), and antidiabetic medications (PR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.00–1.72) were more prevalent among non-frail and frail residents compared with most-frail residents. Antihypertensive use was more prevalent with increasing frailty in China and Japan, but less prevalent with increasing frailty in Australia. Antidiabetic medication use was less prevalent with increasing frailty in China and Spain but was consistent across frailty groups in Australia and Japan. There were overall and frailty-specific variations in prevalence of different STOPPFrail medications across cohorts. This may reflect differences in prescribing cultures, application of clinical practice guidelines in the nursing home setting, and clinician or resident attitudes toward deprescribing. Aims: To assess the dietary supplement use in adult individuals with type 1 diabetes, and to study the association between vitamin D supplementation and glycaemic control in an observational cross‐sectional study. Methods: The study subjects were participants of the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy Study. Data were included from all individuals with type 1 diabetes with estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2, who had completed a diet questionnaire. In the questionnaire, the participants reported dietary supplement use for the past 30 days. A thorough investigation with an assessment of the blood panel was conducted at the study visit. Results: Data were available from 1181 individuals (43% men, mean ± SD age 45 ± 13 years). Altogether 62% of the sample reported supplement use; 56% reported some vitamin or mineral and 27% reported non‐vitamin and non‐mineral supplement use. Supplement use was more frequent among women and those supplementing had better overall health. In the study sample, of the vitamins and minerals, vitamin D (45%) and magnesium (31%), respectively, were the most frequently reported. In the multivariable models, vitamin D supplementation was associated with better glycaemic control. Starting from a daily dose of ≥30 μg, there was evidence of improving glycaemic control with higher doses of supplemental vitamin D (e.g., for 30 μg: B [Wald Confidence Internal], p‐value, −2.76 [−5.03 to −0.49], 0.017). Conclusions: Supplement use was frequent in this sample of adult individuals with type 1 diabetes. Due to potential drug–supplement interactions, the attending physicians should be aware of their patients' supplement use. (1) Background: This study aimed to determine whether standard-dose vitamin D supplementation could provide adequate levels in exclusively breastfed infants born with different cord 25(OH)D levels and to evaluate related neonatal morbidities. (2) Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was designed in term infants. Three groups were formed based on cord 25(OH)D levels; Group1 Deficiency:25(OH)D < 12 ng/mL, Group2 Insufficiency:25(OH)D = 12–19 ng/mL, and Group3 Optimum:25(OH)D = 20–100 ng/mL. Cord and 1st month 25(OH)D levels, after receiving standard-dose vitamin D prophylaxis, neonatal outcomes and anthropometric measurements were compared. (3) Results: The study involved 86 infants. Group1 Deficiency had also significantly lower 25(OH)D levels at 1st month compared to the others (p < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between cord and 1st month 25(OH)D levels (r = 0.78, p < 0.001). Despite the fact that the mother's age and clothing style were similar, Group1 Deficiency mothers had higher parity numbers and used less vitamin D during pregnancy (p = 0.03, p = 0.04). Neonatal outcomes analysis revealed that newborns in Group1 Deficiency experienced more respiratory distress, transient tachypnea, and early-onset sepsis, as well as more and longer hospital stays in the first-month of life (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: Infants with low cord 25(OH)D levels had also lower 25(OH)D values in the 1st month of life and experienced higher rates of neonatal morbidities. Given its numerous biological activities and impact on neonatal morbidities, determining an individualized dose of vitamin D supplementation may be more accurate than using the standard approach. Purpose: Cement usage in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly common. However, osteoporosis-related fracture risk in cemented vs uncemented THA patients is poorly characterized. We aim to analyze the usage of metabolic bone care and osteoporosis fracture risk in cemented vs uncemented THA patients using FRAX and radiographic bone measurements. Methods: Chart review on 250 THA patients was performed retrospectively. Demographics, FRAX scores, hip radiograph measurements, osteoporosis diagnosis, treatment and screening were compared between cemented and uncemented THA patients. Logistic regression model was used to analyze factors influencing cement usage. Results: Cemented THA patients have significantly higher osteoporosis-related fracture risk as measured by FRAX major (20% vs 13%) and FRAX hip (8% vs 5%). There is no significant difference in osteoporosis treatment, vitamin D / calcium supplementation, or metabolic bone disease screening based on patients' cement status. Female sex and rheumatoid arthritis status significantly predict cement usage, but FRAX scores do not predict cement usage. Additionally, 50% (10/20) of patients with Dorr C classification were uncemented. Conclusion: Although some patients undergoing THA with high osteoporosis-related fracture risk were identified and cemented, some risk factors including poor proximal femur shape (by Dorr classification) and poor bone quality (as measured by FRAX score) were potentially overlooked. Introduction: Although the vaccine has many individual and social benefits, 'Vaccine Hesitancy' has led to an increase in the number of vaccine-preventable diseases. The aim of our study is to determine the effect of ideas that cause vaccine hesitancy to comply with traditional medicine practices and drugs and to determine the ratio of parents' preference for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on the parents who refused vaccination in their children under the age of 8 between the years 2017-2022. Parents of the vaccinated children who were matched for age and gender were determined as the control group. Demographic characteristics of families, education levels, compliance ratios for well-child follow-up and pregnancy follow-up, preference ratios for traditional medicine and/or CAM applications were compared. Results: A total of 123 families, 61 of whom were vaccine refusal and 62 of the control group, were included in the study. It was determined that the ratio of parents who refuse vaccination have increased in the last five years. The education level was found to be higher in the study group (p=0.019). The most common reasons for vaccine refusal were distrust of the vaccine content (72.1%) and noncompliance with religious beliefs (49.1%). It was also found that the ratios of prophylactic vitamin use and tetanus vaccination of mothers during pregnancy were lower in the study group (p<0.01). While the rate of compliance with vitamin D and iron prophylaxis for infants was lower in the vaccine refusal group (p<0.01), the ratio of preference for CAM was higher (p<0.01). Conclusion: Vaccine hesitancy is a complex issue that affects public health, in which many individual, religious, political and sociological factors play a role. As with recent studies, this research shows that the most important reason for vaccine rejection is "lack of trust". The higher education level in the vaccine refusal group may also be a sign of this distrust. Not only the rejection of the vaccine, but also the lack of use of vitamin drugs seems to be related to lack of trust. This may also cause CAM methods to be preferred more. Impaired vitamin D status is highly prevalent among women with UFs. The objective of this first-ever systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the size of uterine fibroids (UFs). We performed a comprehensive literature search for published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to September 2022. Five trials including 511 participants (256 cases and 255 controls) were included. Pooling results from five trials, which compared size of UFs between experimental and placebo groups, revealed that vitamin D supplementation could significantly decrease the size of UFs (standardized mean difference [SMD]: −0.48, 95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.66, −0.31) and cause improvement in serum level of vitamin D compared to placebo group (SMD: 3.1, 95% CI: 0.66, 5.55). A significant effect was observed in the subset of trials administering vitamin D supplementation for >8 wk (SMD: −0.62, 95% CI: −0.88, −0.37). In conclusion, vitamin D supplementation significantly increases serum levels of vitamin D and reduces the size of UFs. There is currently no consensus on the guidelines for vitamin D prophylaxis in healthy children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prescribing behaviour of vitamin D prophylaxis among Belgian paediatricians. Between June and September 2022, a questionnaire was distributed by email to all Belgian paediatricians who are a member of at least one of three scientific or professional organisations, as well as to the heads of every Belgian paediatric or neonatal hospital ward. We analysed 426 completed questionnaires. All regions, age categories and subspecialties were represented. Vitamin D prophylaxis is always or frequently recommended by 98% of paediatricians. Fifty-eight per cent of paediatricians advise vitamin D prophylaxis up to the age of six years and 66% of paediatricians advise a daily dose of 400 IU. In nearly every hospital in Belgium (96%), there is a specific protocol for vitamin D prophylaxis for newborns; but not for the paediatric unit (only 30%). Nearly all Belgian paediatricians prescribe vitamin D prophylaxis to infants. Although not recommended by guidelines, 25(OH)D is frequently measured by paediatricians. Introduction: The relationship between depression and inflammation and the resulting vascular/neuronal damage have been demonstrated in recent studies. In this study we aimed to investigate inflammation and the possible degeneration that can be caused by depression and accompanying vitamin D deficiency using a non-invasive imaging method of optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods: Twenty-four healthy controls and 42 drug free major depressive patients matched for age, sex and eye measurements were compared in terms of vitamin D, C Reactive Protein (CRP) and OCT parameters. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), The Clinical Global Impressions Scale (CGI) and Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF) were used to assess disease severity. Results: CRP level and choroidal thickness in the major depression group were significantly higher than the healthy controls. Vitamin D level and the ganglion cell layer (GCL) volume was significantly lower in the major depression group compared to healthy controls. Positive correlation was found between HAM-D and CRP in major depressive patients; a negative correlation was found between current attack duration and GCL volume. CGI was positively correlated with CRP and HAM-D. GAS was negatively correlated with CRP and HAM-D. Conclusion: It has been shown that major depression might be an inflammatory disorder with possible degenerative processes observed with OCT and CRP measurements. Statins are the leading lipid-lowering drugs, reducing blood cholesterol by controlling its synthesis. Side effects are linked to the use of statins, in particular statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). Some data suggest that vitamin D supplementation could reduce SAMS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in a randomized controlled trial. Men (n = 23) and women (n = 15) (50.5 ± 7.7 years [mean ± SD]) in primary cardiovascular prevention, self-reporting or not SAMS, were recruited. Following 2 months of statin withdrawal, patients were randomized to supplementation (vitamin D or placebo). After 1 month of supplementation, statins were reintroduced. Before and 2 months after drug reintroduction, muscle damage (creatine kinase and myoglobin) was measured. Force (F), endurance (E) and power (P) of the leg extensors (ext) and flexors (fle) and handgrip strength (FHG) were also measured with isokinetic and handheld dynamometers, respectively. The Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire and a visual analog scale (VAS) were administrated to assess participants' self-reported health-related quality of life and SAMS intensity, respectively. Repeated-measures analysis was used to investigate the effects of time, supplementation, and their interaction, according to the presence of SAMS. Despite no change for objective measures, subjective measures worsened after reintroduction of statins, independent of supplementation (VAS, SF-36 mental component score, all p < 0.05). However, no interaction between time and supplementation according to the presence of SAMS was observed for any variables. Vitamin D supplementation does not appear to mitigate SAMS. Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder found in women of reproductive age in India. It has multigenic etiology, including genetic, lifestyle, stress, diet, exercise, and obesity. Methods: We have searched various databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar including the relevant literature on "PCOS." Results: Some of the most common clinical features observed are oligomenorrhea/amenorrhea, hyperandrogenemia, hyperinsulinemia, polycystic ovaries in ultrasonography, hirsutism, alopecia, acne, and acanthosis nigricans. Several studies have shown an association between PCOS and heart disease because of varied causes, including altered lipid/glucose metabolism, hypertension, systemic inflammatory conditions, vascular injuries, obesity, and hyperandrogenism. PCOS and hyperprolactinemia are the two most common etiologies of anovulation in women, although evidence linking them suggests independent origins of these conditions. Hence, PCOS influences the quality of life as its clinical manifestations may lead to fear of sexual unattractiveness, poor self-esteem, discontent with one's physical appearance, social anxiety, emotional changes, and mood swings, causing huge psychological distress. Conclusion: It is essential to focus on managing the patients' primary needs and reducing the impact of long-term risk factors when treating a patient with PCOS. Background Vitamin D plays an essential role in promoting skeletal muscle metabolism. Several studies show that vitamin D may help the elderly prevent sarcopenia. Nevertheless, the outcome remains debatable. Our meta-analysis aimed to summarize the effect of vitamin D supplementation on sarcopenia-related parameters. Methods We searched PubMed, Cochrane, Springer, SAGE Journals, and Scopus abstracts on 10th December 2021 for relevant studies. We included articles that studied the effect of vitamin D on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. The aim was to measure the muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance both at baseline and at the end of the intervention. Results A total of 6,628 participants from 35 studies were included. Most of the studies used oral vitamin D, whereas only one study used intramuscular injection. The effect of vitamin D supplementation showed no effect on appendicular skeletal muscle mass (SMD = .05 [95% CI, .33 - .44], p = .79). Regarding muscle strength, vitamin D supplementation did not have a significant effect on muscle strength which is handgrip strength (p = .26). Respecting physical performance, vitamin D supplementation did not affect TUG (Timed Up and Go) (p = .45). Conclusions Vitamin D supplementation had minimal effect on sarcopenia-related parameters. Background: Vitamin D supplementation for infectious diseases has been discussed, but its role in COVID-19 is unclear. Therefore, this study examined the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 pneumonia patients who received vitamin D supplementation. Methods: This prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial was conducted in a university hospital between July 2020 and March 2022. The inclusion criteria were patients aged ≥ 18 years with COVID-19 pneumonia patients. The patients were randomized into two groups: an intervention group receiving vitamin D supplementation (alfacalcidol, two mcg orally daily) until discharge and a control group. The clinical outcomes were pneumonia treatment duration, length of hospital stay, and change in pneumonia severity index between enrollment and discharge. Subgroup analysis was conducted for supplemental oxygen use, high-dose corticosteroid administration, evidence of lymphopenia, C-reactive protein concentration, and total serum vitamin D concentration. Adverse events were monitored. Results: Two hundred ninety-four patients were recruited (147 per group). The two groups did not differ in pneumonia treatment duration to discharge (p = 0.788) or length of hospital stay (p = 0.614). The reduction in the pneumonia severity index between enrollment and discharge was more significant in the intervention group (p = 0.007); a significant decrease was also observed among patients who had C-reactive protein > 30 mg/L (p < 0.001). No adverse reactions were recorded. Conclusions: Adding active vitamin D to standard treatment may benefit COVID-19 pneumonia patients who require supplemental oxygen or high-dose corticosteroid therapy or who have high C-reactive protein concentrations (> 30 mg/L) upon treatment initiation. Introduction: Nutrition plays a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitating middle to old-aged patients with neurological diseases including movement disorders (MDs). Despite the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in many patients with MDs, data supporting supplementation's effectiveness and safety is sparse and conflicting, therefore, our explicit objective was to provide an all-encompassing review of the subject. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and other scientific databases was conducted up to November 1 2023. The searches included RCTs in all languages with human participants aged 35 and above and not meeting these requirements led to exclusion. Results: Four studies on Parkinson's disease (PD) and one on restless legs syndrome (RLS) including 369 MD patients, however, none in a rehabilitation context, were found. Although three of the four PD studies showed better outcomes, such as decreasing levodopa-induced dyskinesia or enhancing physical performance in some or all domains, the RLS study did not identify symptom improvement. The one serious adverse effect observed, cerebral infarction, aroused safety concerns, however its relationship to vitamin D consumption is questionable. Structurally the studies can be characterized by large variations in patient populations, in primary outcomes, and disease severity, but typically a relatively short duration of therapy in most cases. With other limitations such as the small number of studies, major trial design heterogeneity, limited sample sizes, and a greatly variable Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) evaluation, only a qualitative synthesis was feasible. Discussion: Two main implications can be inferred from these results, which we interpret as cautiously promising but overall insufficient for firm recommendations. First, there is an urgent need for more research on the role of vitamin D in MDs in the middle- to older-aged population, particularly during rehabilitation. Purpose: Despite the presence of guidelines on vitamin D supplementation in infants and young children, little is known about parental adherence to their recommendations. This review aims to summarise the evidence from observational studies investigating adherence to vitamin D supplementation guidelines in children under five years of age. Methods: Databases of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched from January 2000 until July 2022. Qualitative data synthesis was used to summarise evidence on supplementation adherence. The adherence rate was categorised as low, moderate, and high if it was ≤ 50%, between 50 and 70%, and ≥ 70%, respectively. Results: Eleven studies investigating adherence to eight different vitamin D supplementation guidelines from European countries, USA and Canada were included. The majority of studies were cross-sectional and conducted among infants. Overall, the adherence rate ranged between 14.29% and 95.6%. Low, moderate, and high adherence to supplementation guidelines were reported in six, three, and two studies, respectively. Conclusion: There is generally poor adherence to vitamin D supplementation guidelines in children under five years of age. Nevertheless, the evidence comes from a limited number of studies, mainly conducted in infants, with high methodological heterogeneity in terms of the vitamin D supplementation guideline assessed and the definition of supplementation adherence in the study population. Further research is warranted to identify effective health promotion interventions to increase supplementation adherence and reduce the risk of vitamin D deficiency at this critical life stage. Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of muscle strength and muscle mass occurring with aging, and is associated with a number of poorer health outcomes (such as falls, injuries, reduced overall survival, cognitive decline, and metabolic disorders). Physical inactivity and poor nutrition are important risk factors in the development of sarcopenia, and this review highlights the evidence for exercise (one of the most important and effective strategies in combatting age-related muscle loss) as well as nutrition in sarcopenia. Targeted supplementation with fatty acids (including omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids), silkworm pupae extract, probiotics, and curcumin are also reviewed. Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that affects approximately 11% of people worldwide. The exact mechanisms underlying IBS remain unclear, but evidence suggests that low-grade inflammation is involved in its pathophysiology. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a key cytokine that mediates inflammatory responses in the intestinal mucosa and has been linked to the development of IBS. Our study aimed to provide an overview of the current knowledge on the role of IL-6 in IBS. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted based on a search on the PubMed database, where only 26 articles investigated the role of IL-6 in irritable bowel syndrome were found. Results: Our review revealed that patients with IBS had higher levels of IL-6 in their serum/plasma. Furthermore, increased expression of IL-6 mediated by cholinergic signalling was associated with increased abdominal pain/discomfort and bloating. More recently, an interaction between IL-6 and corticotrophin-releasing factor was shown to provide more insight into the mechanisms underlying IBS symptoms during stressful periods, which are experienced by almost two-thirds of patients with IBS. Elevated levels of IL-6 were also correlated with increased fatigue and intestinal inflammation. Targeting IL-6 expression or IL-6 signalling pathway using probiotics, vitamin D3 or a replacement diet may offer a novel therapeutic strategy to improve IBS symptoms, abdominal pain, bloating and fatigue after consumption of ancient wheat products. Conclusion: Further studies are needed to elucidate the causal relationship between IL-6 and IBS, as well as the molecular pathways and cellular targets of IL-6 in the gut. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bone lytic lesions are a possible complication of pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1B, in undertreated adult patients. Whole body [18F] F-fluorocholine PET/CT is a useful imaging tool to assess brown tumor progression in this context. We describe the case of a 33-year-old woman, referred for the diagnostic evaluation of lytic bone lesions of the lower limbs, in the context of asymptomatic pseudohypoparathyroidism. She had been treated with alfacalcidol and calcium during her childhood. Treatment was discontinued at the age of 18 years old because of the lack of symptoms. A femur biopsy revealed a lesion rich in giant cells, without malignancy, consistent with a brown tumor. Laboratory tests showed a parathyroid level at 1387 pg/ml (14–50). Whole-body Fluorocholine PET/CT revealed hypermetabolism of bone lesions. The final diagnosis was brown tumors related to hyperparathyroidism complicating an untreated pseudohypoparathyroidism. Genetic testing confirmed PHP type 1B. Pseudohypoparathyroidism with radiographic evidence of hyperparathyroid bone disease, is a very rare condition due to parathyroid hormone resistance in target organs, i.e., kidney resistance, but with conserved bone cell sensitivity. It has been reported in only a few cases of pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ib. Long-term vitamin D treatment was required to correct bone hyperparathyroidism. With this rationale, the patient was treated with calcium, alfacalcidol, and cholecalciferol. One-year follow-up showed complete resolution of pain, improvement in serum calcium, and regression of bone lesions on [18F]F-fluorocholine PET/CT. This case illustrates the usefulness of [18F]F-fluorocholine PET/CT for the imaging of brown tumors in pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1B, and emphasizes the importance of calcium and vitamin D treatment in adult patients, to avoid the deleterious effects of high parathyroid hormone on skeletal integrity. Aim: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is mainly listed in the etiology of late-onset hypocalcemia in the neonatal period, as a probable cause of hypocalcemia in the early period, figured out in our study. We compared the vitamin D status and biochemical characteristics of refugee newborns with those of native newborns with early-onset hypocalcemia. Methods: One hundred and forty newborns enrolled in our comparative cross-sectional study were admitted with calcium <8 mg/dL in term or <7 mg/dL in preterm infants detected at the maternity ward within 72 h postnatal age during a 3-month period from June to August in 2020. Serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, and parathormone levels were measured on the initial day. Vitamin D and calcium levels in newborns before discharge. Results: The serum calcium levels in refugees were 7.12 mg/dL and 7.23 mg/dL in native newborns. The median vitamin D level was 8.57 gg/L in refugees and 7.99 gg/L in native newborns. Vitamin D deficiency was found in every eight in ten newborns with early- onset hypocalcemia. There was no difference in the prevalence of VDD between the refugee and native neonates. Maternal vitamin D supplementation was 12.8% in the refugee group and 13.3% in the native group. The hospital stay was similar in both groups. Conclusion: Adequate access to preventive health services, routine screening of pregnant women for VDD, and supplementation during pregnancy and lactation should be provided to mothers from underdeveloped or developing countries because the prevalence of VDD is higher among this group. Introduction Vitamin D plays a vital role in the proper functioning of various systems of the human body. Conventionally, it is known that its deficiency can impair, among other factors, calcium homeostasis, bone metabolism, and immune system regulation. Besides having anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic properties, 25(OH)D also acts in maintaining the integrity of the human retina, favoring the idea of it being a protective factor for certain ocular diseases. Objective Therefore, the purpose of this review was to collect data from the literature which support the importance of vitamin D for ocular health. Methods Through the Scientific Electronic Library Online and the National Library of Medicine databases, a compendium was created on the subject. Results In total, 31 articles in English published between 2016 and 2020 were found. These articles were reviewed and categorized by diseases in order to study each disorder thoroughly. It is noticed that 25(OH) D is, in fact, a potential protective factor against such diseases, including diseases that affect both the surface of the cornea and the ocular tissues that have vitamin D receptors. Conclusion Vitamin D is a protective hormone in the eye, and its deficiency is related to a variety of ocular diseases. Therefore, the supplementation of 25(OH)D can be considered as a complementary treatment for patients with these diseases, since it brings relevant benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chloasma, which is distinguished by irregularities in the pigmentation of skin, poses substantial challenge in the field of dermatology. The regulatory influence of vitamin D on the functions of skin cells implies that it may have the capacity to effectively treat chloasma and promote wound healing. To assess the efficacy of vitamin D in chloasma treatment and its impact on the function of skin barrier during the process of wound healing. The research spanned from April 2022 to September 2023, in Shanghai, China, examined 480 individuals who had been diagnosed with chloasma. A double‐blind, placebo‐controlled clinical trial was utilized to evaluate effectiveness of topical vitamin D3 in treatment of chloasma. Concurrently, randomized control trial investigated the effects of ingested vitamin D3 supplements on the process of wound healing. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), chloasma severity score changes, wound size reduction and skin hydration levels were critical performance indicators. Statistically, the severity scores of chloasma decreased significantly in the vitamin D treatment group at 3 and 6 months compared with the placebo (p < 0.05). The Vitamin D group exhibited superior wound healing outcomes, including more substantial reduction in lesion size and enhanced skin barrier function, as evidenced by increased skin hydration and decreased TEWL (p < 0.05). Vitamin D substantially mitigated the severity of chloasma and has beneficial effect on wound healing and integrity of the skin barrier. Based on the results obtained, vitamin D exhibited promise as a therapeutic intervention in the field of dermatology, specifically in treatment of chloasma and promotion of wound recovery. The aim of the present study was to investigate in-depth the dietary intake of vitamin D of subjects with different BMI in relation to serum vitamin D status. The survey covered 264 individuals, aged 19 to 60 years. Vitamin D deficiency was found in 33.3% of the participants and 40.2% showed evidence of insufficient vitamin D intake. It was established that the daily average dietary intake of vitamin D among the whole group of subjects was 6.6 μg/day (women - 5.6 μg/day, men - 10.4 μg/day). We found significant correlations between daily average dietary intake of vitamin D and weight, % body fat, fat mass, visceral fat (in women), muscle and fat-free mass, and height-adjusted indices: fat mass index and fat-free mass index, total body water and some metabolic variables (basal insulin and high sensitivity C-reactive protein).
