This proposition paper introduces a novel curriculum designed to explore the trends of normalization and integration transforming the Middle East. The curriculum includes a comprehensive textbook and an accessible digital archive for scholars, students, and individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of this subject. The study investigates how academic politicization, biased content, and limited accessibility have contributed to a significant gap in comprehending Israel’s integration in the Middle East, particularly within US Middle East Studies. Our methodology involves a comparative analysis of the academic approaches of the Edward Said and Bernard Lewis “camps,” representing contrasting perspectives within US academia. Additionally, we assess the divergence between academic and state-led approaches to Middle Eastern integration in the United States. By identifying and analyzing six critical factors – impact on the field of Middle East Studies, impact on academic freedom, impact on religious tolerance, impact on regional stability, fresh research on the US Peace to Prosperity Plan and Arab Peace Initiative, and Israeli-Palestinian peace – this research underscores the necessity for the proposed curriculum and its resources. This curriculum aims to bridge the existing knowledge gap and provide a more balanced and comprehensive understanding of Middle Eastern dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to analyze the assessment of Arabic language skills and linguistic elements in the book published by the Minister of Religion in 2020 for mapping assessments based on HOTS, MOTS, or LOTS. The research method used is descriptive qualitative based on content analysis techniques on assessment items listed in class X Madrasah Aliyah textbooks. Data was obtained through written sources, namely textbooks, as many as 392 assessment items, and other secondary sources, such as papers, articles, and books. The results of this study show that the percentage of assessments in the class X Arabic textbooks issued by the Decree of the Minister of Religion (KMA) of the Republic of Indonesia in 2020 leads to the following competencies: as much as 35% of the assessment items fall into the C2 category (understanding); 54% in category C3 (apply); and 9% fall into category C4 (analyze). The research findings identify that the form of assessment in the Arabic language textbook for class X KMA 2020 leads to the middle-order thinking skills level (MOTS), which is more dominant at the C3 (applying) level. The researchers recommend further research to develop Arabic teaching materials that lead to higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) through Bloom's Taxonomy framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose: Assessing whether a book is relevant or suitable for use in teaching materials is not an easy and haphazard matter, various methods and theories have been offered by researchers in studying this matter. Taking a study of the context of textbooks, researchers found the urgency that textbooks are a foundation for education, socialization and transmission of knowledge and its construction. Researchers offer another approach, namely by using praxeology as a study tool so that the goals of the textbooks previously intended are fulfilled. Design/methodology/approach: The researcher uses a qualitative approach through grounded theory. Grounded theory procedures are designed to develop a well-integrated set of concepts that provide a thorough theoretical explanation of the social phenomena under study. A grounded theory must explain as well as describe. It may also implicitly provide some degree of predictability, but only with respect to certain conditions (Corbin and Strauss, 1990). Document analysis in conducting this research study. Document analysis itself examines systematic procedures for reviewing or evaluating documents, both printed and electronic materials. Findings: Two issues regarding gender acquisition have been investigated in L2 Arabic acquisition studies; the order in which L2 Arabic learners acquire certain grammatical features of the gender system and the effect of L1 on the acquisition of some grammatical features from L2 grammatical gender. Arabic has a two-gender system that classifies all nouns, animate and inanimate, as masculine or feminine. Verbs, nouns, adjectives, personal, demonstrative and relative pronouns related to nouns in the syntactic structure of sentences show gender agreement. Research limitations/implications: In practice, as a book intended for non-speakers, the book is presented using a general view of linguistic theory. In relation to the gender agreement, the presentation of the book begins and is inserted with the concepts of nouns and verbs. Returning to the praxeology context, First, The Know How (Praxis) explains practice (i.e. the tasks performed and the techniques used). Second, To Know Why or Knowledge (logos) which explains and justifies practice from a technological and theoretical point of view. Answering the first concept, the exercise presented in the book is a concept with three clusters explained at the beginning of the discussion. And the second concept, explained with a task design approach which includes word categorization by separating masculine and feminine word forms. Practical implications: Practically, this research obtains perspectives studied from a textbook, namely the Arabic gender agreement is presented with various examples of noun contexts; textbook authors present book concepts in a particular way with regard to curriculum features and this task design affects student performance, and which approach is more effective for developing student understanding. Empirically, the material is in line with the formulation of competency standards for non-Arabic speakers in Indonesia. Originality/value: With this computational search, the researcher found a novelty that was considered accurate by taking the praxeology context as a review in the analysis of non-speaking Arabic textbooks, especially in the year 2022 (last data collection in September) there has been no study on this context. So then, the researcher finds other interests in that praxeology can examine more broadly parts of the task of the contents of the book with the approach of relevant linguistic theories. LANGUAGE teachers , *ENGLISH teachers , *TEACHER development , *MASTER teachers , *ENGLISH as a foreign language - Abstract
Addressing an underappreciated research area, this study reports on how two English language teachers in a Turkish tertiary education context use a global coursebook. At the beginning of the study, a metaphor elicitation task and pre-study interviews were employed to detect the teachers' coursebook conceptualizations. Then, a total of 12 lessons were video-recorded and adaptations were identified using a research-informed framework developed for this study. The participants examined and evaluated their own practices in stimulated recall sessions, reflective conversations and journal writing. The study was concluded with post-study interviews. Data revealed that the teachers' instructional practice was driven by the coursebook to a large extent as they stuck to minor adaptations and followed the guidance given by the coursebook. Along with the institutional constraints, the teachers' practices were influenced by their own personal preferences, attempts to make coursebook tasks accessible to learners, lack of planning and the highly structured delivery of tasks in the coursebook. However, pedagogic considerations were not foregrounded by the teachers. The results of the study call for professional teacher development on coursebook utilization, coursebook-based instead of coursebook-led program planning alongside redesign of coursebooks as resources rather than instructions. Critical analysis (CA) skills are crucial in higher education and should be incorporated into the curriculum at that level. The unique characteristics of abstract biology materials and the involvement of prospective Biology teachers (PBTs) in scientific investigation activities make them highly relevant for teaching CA skills. Inquiry activities require teaching materials or textbooks that explicitly engage science teacher trainees in science process skills (SPS) activities. For effective inquiry-based learning (IBL), appropriate textbooks are essential. Therefore, in this study, a Plant Anatomy and Development textbook based on SPS was utilized as a tool to develop CA skills. The main objective of the study was to assess the impact of SPS-based PADT on PBTs' CA skills in the Plant Anatomy and Development (PAD) course. To achieve the research objectives, a quasi-experimental research design with a pretest-posttest control group was implemented. The research sample consisted of fifty-five prospective teachers who were selected through purposive sampling. They were divided into two groups: the experimental group (n=28) and the control group (n=27). To analyze the students' critical analysis skills, twelve valid and reliable essay items were utilized. The research findings indicated that the experimental group exhibited a significantly greater cognitive gain (>0.70) compared to the control group (0.30 < n-gain < 0.70) (p < 0.05). Introduction. A phrasebook as a type of text is aimed at providing the basics of communication in situations when the knowledge of a foreign language is absent. It can not be classified as a type of a dictionary, textbook or manual for the development of speaking skills. The article examines the problem of determining the status of a phrasebook in the typology of text types. The study is aimed at a diachronic analysis of the texts and structure of phrasebooks to identify features that unite a phrasebook with a textbook, as well as to determine the properties inherent only to a phrasebook, allowing it to be distinguished as an independent type of text. The lack of works that consider the problem of determining the status of a phrasebook determines the relevance of the study.Methodology and sources. The research material – the texts of German-Russian and Russian-German phrasebooks of the XVIII–XXI centuries, covering the time period from 1795 to 2011, which were created both for teaching the German or Russian language, and for practical use during travel. The general (educational and tourist) phrasebooks were chosen because of the fact that they reflect different aspects of interaction between representatives of language communities in predetermined situations. Results and discussion. The comparison has shown that a phrasebook is an independent type of text, at different stages of its historical development having more or less similar features with a textbook, dictionary and a manual for the development of oral speech skills, but differing significantly from them. In the course of its historical development, the cohesive connections between the linguistic units of the phrasebook weaken: from a book containing coherent and logical dialogues on various topics (XVIII–XIX centuries), the phrasebook turns into a manual with a set of thematically organized template phrases and lists of words (late XX–XXI centuries).Conclusion. The phrasebook, thus, is a type of text that is closely related to the era of creation, which is reflected not only in the theme and structure, but also in the strength of the cohesive connections of the linguistic units that make up the phrasebook.

revised bloom’s taxonomy ,turkish as a foreign language (tfl) ,textbook ,textbook evaluation ,cognitive skills ,Education - Abstract
Revised Bloom's Taxonomy is a framework that classifies cognitive skills into six hierarchical levels, ranging from lower-order thinking skills to higher-order cognitive abilities. This taxonomy was revised in 2001 to align with modern educational practices, emphasising active learning, critical thinking, and creativity. This study explores the rationale for incorporating Revised Bloom's Taxonomy in school textbooks. By integrating this taxonomy into educational materials, educators can promote higher-order thinking, depth of understanding, and the development of essential skills needed for real-world challenges. Additionally, it facilitates personalised learning, supports effective assessment, encourages active learning, and aligns with global educational standards. In an era marked by rapid change and information abundance, including Revised Bloom's Taxonomy in textbooks serves as a valuable tool to enhance the quality of education and better prepare students for the demands of the 21st century. Hence, the current research seeks to determine the degree to which Revised Bloom's Taxonomy is incorporated into a Turkish as a Foreign Language (TFL) textbook. The study's results revealed an absence of advanced cognitive abilities in the examined textbook. Corresponding implications were postulated within the related context.

The Meiji Restoration (1868) ended the Tokugawa Shogunate regime (1603–1867) and proclaimed the emperor as the supreme power of Japan. The Meiji emperor's reign began abruptly, requiring restoration leaders to construct an emperor-centred ideology of whole cloth. This ideology posited an eternal imperial Japan: a unique, tight-knit community of loyal subjects. To disseminate this ideology, the Meiji government introduced shūshin (moral teaching) into the elementary school curriculum, aiming to transform all Japanese children into imperial subjects. Drawing upon Louis Althusser's theory of interpellation via Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs), this study reads textbook stories as an interpellation practice and shows how the government portrayed characters in the stories as "Unique and Absolute Subjects" of the ideology to persuade children to willingly subjugate themselves to national ideals. This study conducts direct textual and contextual analyses of kokutei shūshin-sho (government-produced moral training textbooks) produced between 1903 and 1942, with a special focus on the teaching unit of the kokka (state). Two themes – loyalty and the imperial family – dominate this unit. The analysis reveals that the stories created "targeted truth" by pruning away details of characters' real lives, putting a beautiful mask on them, and sometimes even re-inventing or mythologising them. - Abstract
Textbook outcome (TO) has been proposed as a tool to evaluate surgical quality. Textbook oncological outcome (TOO) adds chemotherapeutic compliance to TO. This study was conducted to analyze the TO and TOO of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery at our center. Data from a prospective database of patients operated on for gastric adenocarcinoma between September 2018 and September 2022 were analyzed. Postoperative management followed Enhanced Recovery After Surgery guidelines. The Dutch Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Audit group defined TO as a multidimensional measure (10 items). TOO also considers guideline-accordant chemotherapeutic compliance. Three hundred patients underwent surgery during the study period (167 men, 133 women). One hundred seventy-six (58.7%) reached TO. Achieving TO was influenced by patients' comorbidities, calculated via the Charlson Comorbidity Score (3 vs. 4; p = 0.002) and surgery type (subtotal gastrectomy; p < 0.001), but not by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score (p = 0.057) or surgical approach (laparoscopic vs. open; p = 0.208). The analysis of TOO included 213 patients. Of these, 71 (33%) underwent complete adequate systemic treatment. Compared with the non-TOO group, patients who achieved TOO had a lower median age (64 vs. 73 years; p < 0.001) and lower ASA score (p < 0.001) and more frequently underwent preoperative chemotherapy (p < 0.001). Our results represent the experience of a single team at a high-volume Western institute. Patients' comorbidities and surgery type influenced whether TO was achieved. Conversely, younger age, lower ASA score and preoperative chemotherapy were associated with TOO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental education should be sustainable. For a peaceful and happy world, each country is expected to see the environment as common heritage and to bring this sensitivity to the students in the education processes. Social Studies course is a course that aims to educate students to be effective, sensitive to living together, and have a perception of common heritage within the framework of global citizenship. For the environmental sensitivity to be more effective, the education process is bound to carry out very important tasks. Students can be supported to gain awareness of environment through educational programs, textbooks, teaching strategies, methods, and techniques from an early age on and throughout their education. The aim of this study is to investigate what kind of educational process the students in Turkey, which has an important geopolitical position in the world, go through in the social studies course, which bears the responsibility of conveying universal principles. In our study, the mixed method was used and it was investigated whether the environmental issues are discussed in social studies textbooks in accordance with the developmental levels of the students. In the research process, teachers' opinions as well as the textbooks were examined. As a result of the research, it has been understood that social studies textbooks do not primarily handle the environmental issues efficiently and that children are not trained well enough to gain environmental sensitivity. - Abstract
The article is devoted to the issue of artistic communication as an integral and essential factor in arts education and artistic understanding in general. The aim of the article is to outline specific methods of artistic communication using the example of mastering the educational content of the integrated course "Art". The key definition of "artistic communication" is clarified as a multi-directional dialogue that includes communication between subjects and works of art, communication with the author mediated by the work, communication around art, and self-reflective communication. The article explores the potential for using content from the educational media space in both virtual and direct communication between subjects, mainly through using an electronic application. Core principles for establishing artistic communication and educational content are revealed, including a worldview approach, a value-based approach, the dialogic nature of art appreciation; "going beyond" the art itself; and Ukrainocentrism. The analysis of artistic communication methods is conducted using the material from the integrated course textbook "Art" for the 7th grade (authored by a team that includes the article's author). The conceptual idea of the model curriculum, on which the textbook is based, is outlined: the individual who perceives the world of art and life through the lens of art. The thematic educational content of the textbook is revealed, organized within dynamic thematic clusters. Examples of the application of artistic communication in thematic clusters are provided for optimal mastery by students during music and visual arts lessons. The type of thematic integration chosen by the textbook authors is emphasized. It is noted that the organization of artistic communication discussed requires further analysis of the methodological components of the educational process (the dynamics of practical and creative tasks, the methodology for organizing exploratory activities in the aspect of communication, the connection between artistic communication and the formation of students' competency spheres, etc.). What makes a useful textbook, and can the use of textbooks boost active learning and student satisfaction in political science higher education? Drawing on the author's own experience of writing a textbook and a student survey, this article articulates some propositions on effective textbook-assisted teaching practice. In seeking to develop a theory of effective textbook use, the article explores the features of textbooks and textbook-supported teaching that work to promote student engagement and the achievement of course-specific learning outcomes. A three-dimensional theory of effective textbook-supported teaching in political science is outlined, contributing to the wider literature on higher education pedagogy. The article shows why textbooks are valuable for teaching and learning, elucidating how they can be used effectively to support student learning. The article concludes that common perceptions of textbooks as "dumbing down" or "lowest common denominator" teaching are misplaced. Rather, textbooks can work as useful primers that leverage student learning and facilitate learners' access into advanced, specialist scholarship in the field of political science. Books are a significant source of mathematics learning for children with intellectual disabilities. A book's design and content must describe the learning requirements. This study seeks to discover how thematic books, specifically, are used in the learning of mathematics for students with intellectual disabilities. This study uses quantitative and qualitative methodologies with an explanatory sequential design. The content study of ten textbooks for high school students with intellectual impairments provides an overview of the applicability of the competencies contained in the curriculum. The number of pages in the textbooks ranges from four to 23, with practice questions dominating the majority of learning material about natural numbers with mixed computational kinds, and the majority of problems are short entries. The findings of this study show that teachers only use books occasionally, which is valuable data that opens up opportunities to design specific textbooks for mathematics learning. Their use is through adaptation and modification processes, but teachers use other sources for learning (e.g., designing their own and searching the internet), and computing material and the use of money are mostly taught to students through short answer questions. The conclusions of this study provide significant information for designers of future mathematics learning books. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates how L2 learners of Korean in foreign language-learning environments manifest the target knowledge as a function of various factors surrounding the learners (e.g., L2 textbook input, language-specific properties, general language-use experience in class), specifically concerning the learners' written production of the postposition–verb pair in a locative postposition–verb construction. For this purpose, we analyze two textbook types and learner writing from two L1 groups, focusing on postposition/verb use, Type–Token Ratio, and keyness. We find some meaningful relationships, but also inconsistencies, between L2 textbook input and L2 written production regarding this construction. We discuss implications of the findings with respect to how L2 knowledge is shaped at the interface of L2-textbook characteristics, language-specific properties involving the target knowledge, learners' L1, and general language-use experience in class. Based on the results, we also discuss pedagogical implications, with emphasis on (methods and technologies of) utilizing the existing corpora for instructional purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIGITAL literacy , *GRADE levels , *TEXTBOOKS , *QUALITATIVE research , *MIDDLE schools - Abstract
This study aims to compare the different types of literacy found in Turkish textbooks used in middle schools. The study used a document analysis, which is a qualitative research method. Four Turkish textbooks from grades 5-8, used in the academic year 2023-2024, were analyzed using the content analysis technique with MAXQDA 20.4.1 software. The study found that all middle school Turkish textbooks included four types of literacy (information, visual, graphic, and digital). However, these literacies were not evenly distributed among the grade levels. The study also found that the textbooks did not relate the different types of literacy or language skills to each other. Additionally, the activities to develop these literacies were limited to specific competencies. The study suggests that textbook authors emphasize digital literacy skills in Turkish textbooks at all grade levels by including different competencies. The concept of multiple literacies should also be emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cognitive Domains are important in the instructions and questions for learning tasks in the textbook, especially for helping students improve their thinking skills. The aim of this study was to analyze the cognitive process and knowledge dimension of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy represented in the writing tasks provided in the "English for Nusantara" for seventh-grade students. This research was content analysis. This study used a checklist instrument. The research revealed that writing tasks in the textbook covered five of six categories of the cognitive process of revised Bloom's Taxonomy. The most used level of cognitive process was the remembering level. In terms of Knowledge Dimension, all Knowledge Dimensions existed in the writing tasks of the textbook. Writing tasks belong involving factual knowledge were most dominant. In other words, the writing task of the textbook put more emphasis on LOTS rather than HOTS and they were not evenly distributed in every chapter. This indicated that the writing task in the textbook is not appropriate with achievements of junior high school English learning in the Merdeka curriculum. Therefore, the textbook needs to be evaluated to be consistent with the achievements of junior high school English learning in the Merdeka curriculum. Teachers can also modify learning or use other supporting textbooks which are consistent with the Merdeka curriculum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzed the tasks associated with measures of central tendency proposed to Chilean students from 5
th to 8th year of basic education. For this purpose, the activities involving mean, median, and/or mode were identified through the revision of two series of textbooks (16). The units of analysis were (1) type of measure, (2) task, (3) context, (4) support, and (5) cognitive skill. The main findings allowed us to indicate that the texts are aligned with the curricular guidelines, with tasks mostly associated with mean and mode, prioritizing calculation. Additionally, the tasks lack a context that gives meaning to the data. The support in which the data is presented is written and tabular. Finally, regarding the type of cognitive skills with the greatest presence in the textbooks, these are at a basic level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The largest part of the contemporary foreign language textbooks are composed of teaching units consisting of a text, thematic dictionary, grammar part, lexical exercises and grammar exercises. Each of these parts should be synchronized with all other parts, i.e. the text should contain as much as possible grammar occurrences explained in the grammar part of the given unit, the thematic dictionary and the text of the unit should regard the same or closely related topic, the lexical exercises should as well cover that topic and the grammar exercises should confirm the knowledge acquired from the grammar information of the given unit. Thus, we said that the text, as a starting component of the teaching unit, should have horizontal connection to the rest of the teaching unit. That horizontal connection is a characteristic or a tendency in all contemporary textbooks, including those used form teaching Macedonian language as a foreign language to foreigners. Another important characteristics of the texts from textbooks as well as all texts for reading for students is the interesting content. It is very common to disregard the importance of these criteria: students to learn new words and not to be amused. However, the memorization of new words and learning grammar structures as well as the whole progress in language learning and the (not) giving up factor depend on the emotions that students develop to the education. There are several ways to achieve interesting text content. One of them is to construct vertical connection of the text: each following text of the next teaching unit to be a new episode of the series, i.e. the life of the characters to be described throughout the whole textbook. In this paper we demonstrate that on two selected textbooks. The first one is the textbook Польська мова за 4 тижні (textbook for Polish language for Ukraine students) and the second one is the textbook Вивчаємо македонську – Учиме македонски (textbook for Macedonian language for Ukraine students). The vertical connection of the texts is actually a challenge for the author of the textbook. In this way, the author must pay attention to the horizontal connection of the material, but he has an additional obligation which is not easily achievable and requires for him to possess a talent of a writer and dramaturge. However, in theory, in the learning of foreign languages, the psychological feelings of calmness and satisfaction could contribute to better memorization of the vocabulary. Hence, if the textbook has vertical connection of the texts, the student will learn each following lesson what more is happening to the characters, that he feels he knows already, as watching a new episode of a TV show. This makes the learning funnier and more productive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIGHER education ,EDUCATIONAL resources ,TEXTBOOKS ,LANGUAGE & languages - Abstract
The US Department of Education posits that higher education students' expenditures on course materials and supplies, including texts for language learning classes, were between $1,265 and $1,471 for the 2017–2018 academic year. For many students, the cost of these materials can jeopardize their studies. One potential solution to this issue is to use free educational materials like open educational resources (OERs). However, not all OERs are of the same quality or useful for language learning. Therefore, to explore the affordances of OERs for language learners, this study compares the traditional textbook and the OER web book in terms of the quality and task engagement (TE) at a university in the US Pacific Northwest. The outcomes shed some light on the possible influences of learners' perceived quality of the OER and its relationship with TE and language learning. The Challenge: Research has shown that open educational resources (OERs) might be a good alternative to the traditional textbook. A low‐cost or free OER can help students save money, but will students be able to engage and be successful in their language learning? Should teachers consider using OERs to teach foreign languages? The selection of new characters for Chinese textbooks is essential for primary school literacy teaching. This research used content and comparative analyses to study the selection of new characters for Chinese textbooks used in primary schools in mainland China and the Taiwan region. The results showed that there were more new characters in the Chinese primary school textbooks used in mainland China than in those used in the Taiwan region. The distribution of new characters in the textbooks used in each region also differed, and their presentation varied significantly depending on whether they were compiled in mainland China or the Taiwan region. Furthermore, few characters were common to the textbooks used in mainland China and the Taiwan region. These findings provide important references for the study of new characters in textbooks and ultimately for literacy teaching in primary schools.

This research aims to understand the following matters: 1) How to develop the prescribed book for teaching Arabic using the Audiolingual to enhance language skills, 2) The evaluation of linguistic and material experts regarding this book, 3) The experimental results of this book in enhancing language skills. The research methodology follows the pattern outlined by Sugiono in his book on scientific research. The researcher used testing, observation sheets, documents, and interviews to collect data. The research is conducted through the following steps: reviewing potential resources and identifying problems in the research field, collecting information about the product, designing the product according to theory, evaluating by experts, revising the product based on expert suggestions, testing the product in both the control and experimental classes and correcting the product (error correction based on some experimental feedback). For data analysis, to infer the comparison between two classes or pre- and post-teaching, statistical tests such as the paired t-test can be used. The t-test estimates the true difference between the means of two groups by comparing the difference in group means to the combined standard error of the groups. The research results indicate that the book was designed according to the theory explained by Ahmad Fouad in his book. After evaluation by both material and media experts, the book was deemed suitable for experimentation, with an 80% success rate in the trial phase. Following the experiment, the control class showed lower results than the experimental class, demonstrating that the Audiolingualis more effective and better for teaching Arabic. The success rate using this method was 88%.
