ABSTRACT Purpose Methods Findings Conclusion This study explored the experiences of rural caregivers who require temporary housing during hospital treatment when healthcare is not available in their home communities. Understanding these experiences can identify challenges and inform solutions for improving rural access to healthcare.We conducted a community‐engaged qualitative study using semi‐structured interviews with caregivers who stayed at a healthcare hospitality house in Charlotte, NC. Data were collected through virtual interviews in the fall of 2023 and analyzed by three independent reviewers using thematic analysis.Caregivers faced significant financial, logistical, and emotional challenges associated with accessing healthcare far from home. Financial burdens were notable, with substantial out‐of‐pocket expenses despite reduced costs from the hospitality house. Proximity to hospitals was crucial, with participants favoring hospitality houses over hotels for their convenience and security. Emotional support from peers provided meaningful social bonds and alleviated feelings of isolation. Practical amenities, such as laundry facilities and kitchens, eased the daily living obligations. Participants also highlighted the need for advocacy and coordination in navigating care logistics.Our findings highlight key themes showcasing the challenges faced by rural caregivers experiencing a health crisis and who must travel to access healthcare outside their home communities. Medical housing can serve multifaceted social needs during a health crisis and support the interconnectedness of financial, emotional, and practical aspects of healthcare access. Future research should explore broader and more diverse samples and continue to consider community‐engaged approaches to deepen the understanding of health‐related social needs needed to access healthcare. Flex-housing is a form of (social) rental housing where the dwelling unit, the building location or the inhabitation period are temporary. Flex-housing developed as a potential stop-gap solution in Dutch housing policy, to temper the acute housing shortages in the country and provide accommodation to a set of vulnerable groups of residents. This policy review traces the emergence of flex-housing as a 'housing hack' in the Dutch housing policy milieu and outlines the legal changes that enabled its development, including short-term contracts since 2015, a stimulus package aimed at the building sector in 2019, and its promotion to a full-fledged solution in the coalition agreement of 2021. The review further follows the parallel efforts to define the target group for this type of housing, which pieced together 'demanding and resourceful tenants' over time under the umbrella of 'spoedzoeker' (people in urgent need of housing) and discusses the perpetuating inequity and precarity of flex-housing residents. Based on an interview-driven ethnographic study of the Swedish digital BDSM, fetish and kink platform Darkside, this article explores digital kink expressions at a moment when kink communities are both marginalized and seemingly mainstream, navigating a tricky balance between visibility and invisibility, intelligibility and unintelligibility. Across queer, postcolonial, and digital media theorizing, "opacity" provides a way of rethinking these tensions, challenging the idea of public visibility and identification as that which legitimizes sexual otherness. Building on this work, I suggest the term "kink obscurity" as a way of conceptualizing a set of tactics for sexually marginalized groups to exist, resist, and transgress without becoming fully visible or graspable. To these ends, I foreground a "closet positive" analysis of Darkside, not primarily of shame, secrecy, and isolation, but of shared spaces of vulnerability and intensity, a temporary safe house which partly protects against normative regulation. Although the platform activist ethos speaks to the value of openness and outness for the sake of sexual justice, the users are quite invested in anonymous and pseudonymous online presence and sexual expression. Opacity implies a lack of clarity; something opaque may be both difficult to see clearly as well as to understand. Drawing on Édouard Glissant's idea of opacity as a form resistance to surveillance and imperial domination, a digital sexual politics of obscurity could help provide recognition without a demand to fully understand sexual otherness, opening up for new modes of obscure and pleasurable sexual expressions and transgressions. It features a small segment of an interview with Ajarn Manat, the abbot of a modest temple in southern Thailand that had served as temporary housing for tsunami refugees following the devastating wave in December 2004. Post-disaster reconstruction (PDR) is a complex and unpredictable process, especially concerning the construction sector, where understanding associated risks is increasingly vital. This study investigates and evaluates the present condition of post-disaster reconstruction risk (RoPDR) and discerns research trends and deficiencies in the domain via a systematic literature review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis. The Web of Science (WoS) was preferred for its extensive repository of pivotal research publications and its integrated analytical capabilities for producing representative data. This study performed a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 204 peer-reviewed journal articles regarding the risks associated with post-disaster reconstruction from 1993 to 2024, utilizing the R statistical programming package RStudio Bibliometrix R version 4.3.1 to map the research landscape, identify literature gaps, and analyze rising trends. As a result of the analyses, the risks of post-disaster reconstruction were classified into four main clusters. Despite numerous studies exploring post-disaster reconstruction through diverse perspectives and methodologies, the associated risks of these projects remain inadequately analyzed. This inaugural bibliometric study in the realm of RoPDR utilizes novel techniques, such as the h-index, thematic mapping, and trend topic analysis, to attain a comprehensive understanding. Background: Roughly 24–36% of people who are incarcerated in the U.S. are formally diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD). Once released, individuals involved with the criminal legal system (CLS) face increased risks of return to use and fatality and are 129 times more likely to die from an overdose within the first two weeks of release compared to those without CLS involvement. People who are CLS-involved and who are seeking a recovery living environment can access temporary stable housing through recovery homes. However, entering a recovery home can be difficult due to fragmentation among recovery housing organizations and their non-uniform application and screening procedures. A navigation pilot program was implemented to provide clients with recovery home placement advice, pre-screening, and referrals in Cook County, IL. Existing research on recovery homes has rarely examined the importance of recovery housing navigation for enhancing service engagement among CLS-involved individuals receiving medications for OUD. Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 22 clients and three recovery housing navigators as part of a program evaluation of the navigation program pilot. Qualitative software was used to organize and qualitatively analyze transcripts through several rounds of coding producing emergent themes, which were then triangulated, and expanded using navigator data. Results: Clients seeking recovery home services reported multiple prior challenges securing safe and supportive recovery living environments. Despite low initial expectations, clients described their interactions with housing navigators in favorable terms and felt navigators worked with them effectively to identify and meet their housing and substance use needs in a timely manner. Clients also commented on their partnerships with the navigator throughout the process. Interactions with navigators also calmed fears of rejection many clients had previously experienced and still harbored about the process, which bolstered client-navigator relationships and client motivation to engage with additional services. Conclusion: Evidence from this study suggests recovery home navigation can improve the speed and efficiency with which clients are connected to appropriate services that are tailored to their specific needs as well as increase client motivation to engage with a myriad of recovery services. Over the last two decades, natural disasters have led to economic losses exceeding $2.97 trillion, causing 1.23 million deaths and affecting over 4 billion people through injuries, housing loss, displacement, and requiring emergency aid. Data have shown that physical, social, and economic inequities significantly contribute to the vulnerability of communities, especially after disasters. Therefore, low-income communities not only endure more severe and long-lasting infrastructure damage but also face over four times as many deaths per disaster. Natural disasters cause prolonged and widespread homelessness, leading to an inevitable temporary housing crisis, further exacerbated by delayed disaster recovery. This study proposes an innovative short-term Origami temporary emergency housing (TEH) solution, providing an equitable and affordable option to swiftly shelter potential victims postdisasters by considering material, construction, and transportation costs. This research aimed to address postdisaster homelessness challenges by: (1) understanding the timeframe for disaster recovery and TEH implementation following a natural disaster; (2) identifying the main challenges, vulnerabilities, and crucial needs faced by low-income communities postdisaster; (3) recognizing the key characteristics for TEH to be an adequate solution postdisaster; and (4) proposing Origami shelter as a solution for the housing crisis that arises postdisaster and validating its feasibility and applicability through surveying engineering, architecture, and construction (EAC) experts from Peru and Puerto Rico, given the frequent exposure and high vulnerability of these regions to natural disasters. The results underscore the need to implement TEH that can be quickly assembled, enabling victims to reside safely and resume normal activities while infrastructure systems and homes are being repaired or rebuilt. The purpose of this study is to determine the post-earthquake trauma levels of individuals who experienced the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, in Türkiye. 2034 individuals who experienced the earthquake were reached through cross-sectional design and convenience sampling methods within the scope of this study. "Socio-demographic information form" and the "Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Determining Scale" were used as data collection tools. An Independent Sample T Test, One-Way ANOVA test and Pearson Correlation Analysis were performed through IBM SPSS Statistics 20. Results of the research reveal that the trauma levels of the participants are influenced by the following factors: being young, female, and single; low income level; having been diagnosed with a mental illness before the earthquake; being trapped under the rubble; injury and/or death of a family member; witnessing the collapse of buildings and witnessing someone being seriously injured; destruction or damage to the house; staying in temporary housing after the earthquake; losing a large amount of property/money; and, migrating to another city. Praying and seeking support from family and social networks were the most commonly used coping methods. The research results are anticipated to contribute to the utilization of trauma-related information in post-earthquake social services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: We investigated Quality of Life (QOL) in a sample of individuals (n = 341) who experienced different consequences in terms of displacement from their house after earthquake. Methods: Three groups were studied: those who had been displaced but are no longer so, those still displaced, and those who were never displaced. QOL for four time points was assessed: pre-earthquake, during displacement, at the time of the survey, and in ten years. Results: Different trajectories of QOL were observed in the three groups: not displaced individuals showed no significant variation, those who were displaced had a significant decline in QOL after the earthquake but a significant recovery after the displacement experience, and those who were still displaced at the time of the survey reported lowest QOL both after the earthquake and in the future, with no recovery. Predictors of perceived QOL decline were quality and type of temporary accommodation, place attachment, and perceived health impairment. Subsequent QOL perceived improvement was predicted by quality and type of temporary accommodation, risk awareness, and emotional well-being. Discussion: Our findings highlight the importance of minimizing the duration of temporary displacement and providing high-quality temporary accommodations, considering individual needs in the local contexts and communities.

This article explores the experiences of young people navigating an evolving system of housing and homelessness services in Vancouver, Canada. Despite recent shifts toward Housing First policies and calls for prevention-oriented initiatives, many young people continue to rely on temporary emergency accommodations. Amid a surge in youth homelessness and unstable housing in Vancouver, our study examines young people’s “homing” strategies across time and place and temporary and more permanent living environments. We draw from an ongoing ethnographic study that began in 2021 and has involved over 70 interviews and 100 h of fieldwork with 54 young people aged 19 to 29. Our findings emphasize that feeling at home extends beyond having a roof over one’s head for an extended period of time. A focus on homing strategies—that is, the day-to-day practices, routines, and forms of sociality that generate a sense of stability and care even in un-homelike places—highlights how young people can be better supported in making themselves at home in the places where they live, potentially preventing returns to street-based homelessness. This study contributes insights to youth homelessness prevention policies, urging a strengths-based approach that aligns with young people’s needs, priorities, and desires for homemaking.

ontainer settlements (CS) have been widely used as emergency and temporary dwellings in Europe due to the advantages of rapid deployment, cost-efficiency and relatively good living standards. Nevertheless, many authors emphasize the risks of disturbing the spatial order and stigmatization of residents that can lead to deepening the feeling of unrooting and generate substantial social problems. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the main architectural characteristics of CS built in Ukraine to address internal migration caused by war. Multiple comparative case study includes 18 settlements built for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in three distinctive phases. The research focuses on the features critical to human comfort and life quality: settlement size, program, building typology, spatial arrangement, circulation, unit layout, degree of privacy. Results show that developments from 2015 and 2022 have similarities including basic program, size of dwelling units and density, but there are important differences related to the time allocated to designing and construction as well as expected period of operation. Basic recommendations for improving existing and planned developments are increasing the privacy by creating collective-private space outside and inside, developing a rich program, use existing greenery and new landscaping, providing good transit to the urban centres, using all-year weatherproof typologies and technical solutions suitable for long-term use. This fact must be considered in the process of designing new CS for IDPs and refugees, that are being planned and constructed in Ukraine and Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper is part of the work on a scientific project on the topic: A System of Prefabricated Modules for Temporary Accommodation in Disasters and Crises – Working Project. The classifications of the different types of temporary accommodation intended for post-disaster and emergency housing, defined by the authors in previous research on the subject, are further developed and elaborated. A final systematization according to various criteria is presented. The possibilities for their development in an urban planning aspect have been examined, depending on the factors – natural or anthropogenic – that have imposed the need for this type of accommodation, as the focus is on planning, design and construction of micro-modular units or residential structures. The article examines the mechanisms of ensuring the rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons (IDPs) by local self-government bodies in Ukraine. As a result of the armed conflict in the east of the country and the annexation of Crimea, the number of IDPs has increased significantly, which creates serious challenges for the state and society. The author analyzes the legal framework that regulates the rights of IDPs, including the Constitution of Ukraine, the Laws "On Ensuring the Rights and Freedoms of Internally Displaced Persons" and "On Local Self-Government in Ukraine", as well as international regulations. Practical mechanisms for ensuring the rights of IDPs are considered, including the provision of housing, medical care, access to education and employment. Various forms of temporary and permanent housing provided to IDPs are described, including rental of state and municipal housing, construction of housing complexes for displaced persons, and subsidized mortgage lending programs. Ways to provide IDPs with access to medical services, including primary medical care, specialized medical services and psychosocial support, are analyzed. Programs for the integration of IDP children into local schools and kindergartens, as well as support for immigrant students in higher education institutions, are being considered. Measures to promote the employment of IDPs, including programs for retraining, vocational training and support for small businesses, are being studied. Particular attention is paid to the problems and obstacles faced by IDPs and local self-government bodies. The main challenges were identified, including: the lack of necessary funds at the local level for the implementation of IDP support programs, complex assistance procedures that complicate IDPs' access to necessary resources, and problems of IDPs' integration into local communities, including social tension and discrimination. The author offers recommendations for overcoming these problems, emphasizing the need for active cooperation between state bodies, public organizations and international partners. The importance of developing comprehensive support programs, including financial assistance, simplification of administrative procedures, as well as measures to promote the social integration of IDPs into local communities, is emphasized. Attention is focused on the need to strengthen the legal protection of IDPs and develop long-term strategies to ensure their rights and freedoms. Thus, a comprehensive analysis and practical recommendations are offered aimed at improving the mechanisms for protecting the rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons in Ukraine, which is extremely relevant in modern conditions. Prefabricated temporary buildings are a promising solution for post-disaster scenarios for their modularity, sustainability and transportation advantages. However, their low thermal mass building envelope shows a fast response to heat flux excitations. This leads to the risk of not meeting the occupant comfort and HVAC energy-saving requirements. The literature shows different measures implementable in opaque surfaces, like vacuum insulation panels (VIPs), phase change materials (PCMs) and switchable coatings, and in transparent surfaces (switchable glazing) to mitigate thermal issues, like overheating, while preserving the limited available internal space. This paper investigates the energy and overheating performance of the mentioned interventions by using building performance simulation tools to assess their effectiveness. The optimization also looks at the transportation flexibility of each intervention to better support the decision maker for manufacturing innovative temporary units. The most energy-efficient measures turn to be VIPs as a better energy solution for winter and PCMs as a better thermal comfort solution for summer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On arrival in a host country, asylum‐seeking children face uncertainty and stress that may compound past traumatic experiences of war and violence. This article is based on a participatory action research project, Welcome Haven, that aims to promote the wellbeing and mental health of asylum‐seeking families in Montreal, Canada, through psychosocial workshops. Since 2023, our interdisciplinary team has conducted arts‐based workshops to support asylum‐seeking children lodged in hotels that function as temporary accommodations, funded by the federal government. This study examines the drawings and narratives of participating children (ages 5–17) to understand how children communicate and make sense of their experiences through artmaking. Following a participatory action research framework using arts‐based approaches, we use narrative and thematic analysis to analyze our (a) ethnographic field notes, (b) notes from our intervention team meetings, which functioned as peer supervision for facilitators, and (c) photographs of children’s artwork. Our findings suggest that children use drawings to share and externalize their personal stories and to express fears and hopes for the future. Importantly, children’s expression happened not only on the page and through stories, but in the space between facilitators and children, and in their manner of sharing or protecting their art. The challenges of conducting research and creating therapeutic alliances in these spaces are explored. This research has important implications for understanding children affected by war and those in humanitarian crisis settings, including reception centers and shelters in high‐income countries.

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted on December 4, 2021, which resulted in dozens of residents in Lumajang Regency dying and thousands of residents fleeing. The government is programming the rehabilitation of infrastructure and facilities, including reconstructing temporary and permanent housing for refugees. The research location is in the refugee relocation area in Sumbermujur Village, Candipuro District. In post-disaster reconstruction programs, permanent housings are built after temporary housings have been occupied for several months. However, in Lumajang Regency, the government accelerated the construction of permanent housing so that the developer completed the permanent housing earlier than the temporary housing. Two types of residential units were built simultaneously on a plot of site by different developers, so problems arose in combining the different housing types. After conducting literature studies and general observations, the researcher selected five cases for further observation. The criteria and technical specifications for temporary units are stated in Lumajang Regent Regulation Number 1 of 2022. The construction of permanent units uses RISHA technology. The two types of housing are planned to be directly connected in integration. This paper aims to explain the implementation of the construction of temporary and permanent housing and identify problems in combining the two types of housing in one plot. Researchers found four categories of issues, namely: differences in floor height at the connection between two building units, door and window openings that do not function because they meet the wall, two areas of the roof that are not connected properly, and there are gaps in the connection between units.

The design of transitional housing for humanitarian emergencies is an important line of research in current architecture in the world. The response to an emergency, whether due to natural causes or irregular migratory movements, begins with provisory solutions, but as it continues over time, it is necessary to design temporary solutions that can house those affected until their definitive relocation is found. These homes must be able to be implemented in a short period of time, so the most appropriate solutions are prefabricated, light and transportable homes that require minimal work on site. In this sense, a type of modular and transportable housing will be analysed, made up of elements that can be stored compactly, assembled in the factory and transported complete to the place where they are needed. At your location they can be installed quickly and with the fewest possible number of operations. Finally, at the end of their period of use, they can be transferred back to the factory to be disassembled and stored while waiting to be reused again. The article develops a housing model with these characteristics. As part of a company-university collaboration agreement, the Emsamble company has built an experimental module similar to the one proposed, which has been subjected to various tests by the authors. The risk of natural hazards, particularly earthquakes, is a highly significant concern in urban environments. In this research, the initial phase entails estimating the vulnerability map of the building blocks in Kermanshah metropolis, as well as determining the number of individuals at risk during an earthquake. Subsequently, the research identifies and introduces safe zones or suitable locations for accommodating the vulnerable population during such seismic events. For the first part, the vulnerability map was obtained using maps of distance from faults, the structural integrity of the buildings, the strength of the building blocks, and the size of the infrastructure. A fuzzy inference system was utilized. Thus, the high-risk blocks were determined, and their population was estimated. In the second part of the research, distance maps derived from rivers, faults, high-voltage power lines, electric substations, fuel stations, roads, hospitals, fire stations, and police stations were used. These generated maps have then undergone fuzzification, and the weight of the criteria employed has been assessed using the fuzzy hierarchical analysis process (FAHP). Subsequently, by applying the weight associated with each criterion to the corresponding map and merging the resultant maps, maps depicting the suitability for temporal settlement of the vulnerable population during an earthquake were obtained. Finally, the most optimal inner-city and outer-city sites for individuals' lodging amid an earthquake have been chosen. Moreover, certain locations inside the suggested sites and their capacity were assessed. In industrial clusters that are affected by earthquakes and tsunamis, advance countermeasures are necessary to ensure the continuity of business operations of companies. This article presents the results of a questionnaire survey of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, to determine the current status of disaster countermeasures, and a questionnaire survey of residents' awareness of risks and their current countermeasures. The need for shelter after disasters is a common issue, and its planning should occur during the risk management phase, not in the post-disaster process. Following the initial few weeks of emergency aid, the rehabilitation phase comes into play, encompassing the period spent in tem- porary housing units until a transition to permanent housing is achieved. Like the emergency aid phase, this phase cannot be sustained solely by emergency shelter tents due to its extended duration, which is shorter than the time required to construct permanent housing. Specific de- signs suited to the rehabilitation phase are necessary. However, many post-disaster temporary housing implementations have failed to meet the requirements. The study aims to establish a decision-making model for assessing temporary housing alternatives in the aftermath of a disaster. The experts must initially identify the criteria and assign their respective weights to build this model. They contend that the significance of criteria should differ depending on the particular attributes of diverse locales. To accomplish this, a methodology for determining cri- teria weights and an evaluation model is suggested, considering discrepancies in urban density, household size, urban accessibility, and climatic conditions based on regional dissimilarities.

Vulnerable group-oriented temporary space design considers the unique needs and challenges specified groups face during emergencies and aims to create a supportive environment that promotes safety, comfort, and accessibility both physically and psychologically. In this study, the vulnerable group was addressed to women, and a literature study was conducted covering the design of temporary spaces in emergencies and the requirements of the identified group. Alternative temporary space designs were analyzed according to criteria determined from the literature study, and examples were examined with the space syntax method via Depthmap software. As a result, it was suggested that the role of architecture is a significant factor in improving the living conditions and welfare of vulnerable groups, especially women in post-disaster environments, considering different socio-demographic structures and many problems can be corrected with the determined design criteria.

The article discusses London's post-war prefabs, highlighting the Prefab Museum as an online resource dedicated to Britain's post-war prefabs. These prefabricated bungalows were erected between 1945 and 1948 to rehouse ex-servicemen, families affected by bombings, and key workers. Many young people are diagnosed with long-term health conditions requiring additional medical care throughout their lives. Additionally, many young people are also faced with challenges brought about by living in temporary or unstable housing or accommodation. The current paper will explore three exemplar case studies to demonstrate the cross-sectionality of how living in temporary or unstable accommodation can impact upon the health engagement of young people with respect to concepts such as medication adherence and appointment attendance. Cases presented in this paper exemplify significant disruptions to young people's medication adherence, health care engagement, hospital attendance and emotional wellbeing. Future research is warranted to investigate this link, especially given the current socio-economic climate in terms of the cost of living crisis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Periods of forced migration to and in Europe have been common in the past decade and show no expectation of stalling due to ongoing armed conflicts, global inequalities and the adverse effects of climate change. Nevertheless, the provision of accommodation for asylum seekers and refugees continues to depend on temporary, ad hoc solutions. In the context of housing financialisation and shortage of affordable housing across European cities, this decreases opportunities for integration and securing other needs, such as jobs, language acquisition and childcare, but increases the risk of refugee homelessness and social exclusion. Based on cross-national Urban Living Labs exchanges in Leipzig, Riga, Lund, Helsingborg and Vienna, this commentary argues for a European agenda for long-term housing solutions for forced migrants in the arrival and settling phases that tackle issues from discrimination to access, to belonging. The relocation program established to prepare new areas for refugees to prevent them from returning to vulnerable areas is the new area of APG Semeru. This area is referred to as temporary housing (Huntara) for victims of the Semeru eruption. The implementation process is considered highly mature as it involves many parties, including Non-Governmental Organizations such as Banser Bagana, Pramuka Peduli, and even the Indonesian Architects Association. Such synergy is crucial as it is assumed to support innovations in the new area to make it more suitable. The modeling referred to is a series of important stages carried out in disaster relocation policy management. As mentioned earlier, there are several important aspects to be examined in the effectiveness of relocation programs, namely target perceptions, collaboration, and forms of policies implemented. The research uses qualitative research model. The results of this study are: First, dynamics occur from the communication, planning, implementation to development stages. In the communication stage, differences in rationalism and empiricism regarding disasters occur. In planning, actual participation is involved, while in the implementation to development stages, it is always related to unmet needs. Second, to succeed in relocation, there are several forms of policies that must be formulated, such as emergency response policies, mitigation team formation, relocation policies, cooperation and collaboration, post-relocation, and budget policies. The initial policies implemented are related to disaster conditions, while others follow the analysis results of emergency conditions, recovery, or have entered the development stage. All policies are tailored to real-time needs analysis. Additionally, they are all formulated with policy formation, collaboration, and budget stages. Third, the policy implementation model for relocation appears to develop previous theoretical ideas or findings. Several stages such as Jitu Pasna, land clearance, infrastructure and service access, economic and social development need to be implemented with additional policy principles or elements. This study sought to explore if and how shelters and other temporary housing providers receive library services from their local public libraries and to measure their satisfaction with these services. E-mails including a link to an online survey were sent to 1,000 temporary housing providers obtained through publicly available data. Seventy-six providers responded, with two-thirds indicating some type of relationship with the public library. Overall, providers were satisfied with these services, but comments revealed several instances where patrons in temporary housing felt unwelcome in the local library, indicating the need for more inclusive and welcoming library services for people who are in temporary housing. Objectives: I examine housing instability among individuals with a felony conviction but no incarceration history relative to formerly incarcerated individuals as a means of separating the effect of felon status from that of incarceration per se—a distinction often neglected in prior research. I consider mechanisms and whether this relationship varies based on gender, race/ethnicity, time since conviction, and type of offense. Methods: I use National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 data and restricted comparison group, individual fixed effects, and sibling fixed effects models to examine residential mobility and temporary housing residence during early adulthood. Results: I find robust evidence that never-incarcerated individuals with felony convictions experience elevated risk of housing instability and residential mobility, even after adjusting for important mediators like financial resources and relationships. The evidence that incarceration has an additional, independent effect on housing instability is weaker, however, suggesting that the association between incarceration and housing instability found in prior studies may largely be driven by conviction status. Conclusions: These findings reveal that conviction, independent of incarceration, introduces instability into the lives of the 12 million Americans who have been convicted of a felony but never imprisoned. Thus, research that attempts to identify an incarceration effect by comparing outcomes to convicted individuals who receive non-custodial sentences may obscure the important independent effect of conviction. Moreover, these findings highlight that the socioeconomic effects of criminal justice contact are broader than incarceration-focused research suggests. Consequently, reform efforts promoting the use of community corrections over incarceration may do less to reduce the harm of criminal justice contact than expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various trauma healing methods implemented in the Pronojiwo District of Lumajang Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. This region has been selected due to the recurring eruptions of Mount Semeru over the past three years, starting in 2020. While the government has focused on evacuation strategies, shelter location, and infrastructure-related activities, this study concentrates on initiatives aimed at enhancing the mental health of evacuees housed in temporary shelters. Various trauma-healing techniques were employed, including motivational talks, games, educational activities, and singing. The research involved 2,489 refugees displaced by the Semeru eruption in December 2022, and a quantitative method was adopted with a sample of 215 respondents, comprising 105 children and 110 adults. The findings indicated that the respondents held diverse perspectives on the traumahealing methods provided. The specific adversities each respondent faced following the disaster significantly influenced their perceptions. Among children up to adolescence, activities such as games, singing, and cooperative learning were generally well-received. However, methods involving talks, storytelling, motivation, and profound communication were found to potentially exert a positive impact on adult to elderly respondents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, pose inevitable global challenges. Events such as COVID-19, earthquakes, extreme climatic conditions, and conflicts underscore the urgent demand for effective temporary housing solutions. These temporary housing units (THUs) serve as an aid in assisting displaced people to rebuild their lives as the recovery process unfolds. However, numerous temporary housing units present environmental, economic, and social issues that hinder their sustainability. This paper investigates the underlying causes of these issues, defines the essential requirements that temporary housing units must meet, and proposes an initial design to fulfill these requirements. The methodology comprises three key phases: case study analysis, requirement identification, and the integration of these requirements into the design process. The main findings highlight that the construction of sustainable temporary housing units necessitates a meticulous consideration of various parameters to achieve a balanced equilibrium between economic, social, and environmental impacts. Possible future research directions are emphasized, including the use of digital tools and BIM models to promote the adoption of circular economy practices and the validation of the design solution through value analysis. Building information modeling (BIM) is a process for managing the construction information model. The possibility of managing very complex construction orders using information processes has made the work of designers both easier and more productive. In this research, a new process of "assisted design" was implemented for self-assembling temporary houses with high environmental sustainability. The developed procedure allows for the supporting of a nonexpert user in the configuration of housing modules, using the base elements, and assisting them until the energy verification process based on the place of installation. Furthermore, a lifecycle assessment of emissions is made available. This is the result of the interoperability of software enabled by using BIM logic. The proposed work contributes to enriching the range of technical solutions developed to meet the demand for temporary buildings, providing a valid support tool in the design phase, especially when it needs to be completed within a short timeframe. This study introduces a smart configuration procedure that combines aspects of project automation and flexibility with energy efficiency and environmental sustainability needs required for the green transition of building stock. Living with family and friends is a common strategy to prevent or exit homelessness, but little is known about structural barriers that impede family and friends' ability to provide temporary or permanent housing for older homeless adults. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 46 homeless participants from the HOPE HOME study, a cohort of 350 community-recruited homeless adults age 50 or older in Oakland, CA, who reported staying with housed family/friends for 1 or more nights in the prior 6 months. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 hosts of homeless participants and 11 stakeholders in housing and homelessness. We found that homeless older adults and hosts perceived these stays as a form of temporary housing rather than as a permanent exit to homelessness. Structural barriers to family and friends providing housing for temporary stays or permanent exits from homelessness included housing regulations restricting visitors and changing rent obligations; decreased eligibility and priority for shelter and permanent housing; geographic and transportation challenges; and environments inconducive to older adults. We suggest four areas for policy reform: providing subsidies to hosts and homeless individuals, removing disincentives for homeless older adults to stay with family, changing lease regulations, and expanding the supply of affordable housing. Increasingly, post-earthquake cordons (PECs) have been used to support response and recovery activities around the world. However, thus far, the empirical analysis of cordons has not considered the overarching feasibility of their use. This research aims to fill this gap through a case study of Kathmandu Valley following the 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal. It draws on a broader study that has investigated various aspects of cordons in New Zealand and Italy. In total, 13 interviews were conducted in the Nepali language with relevant experts of varying backgrounds and expertise such as academics, disaster management officers, policymakers, municipality representatives, and practitioners (INGO). The interviews were semi-structured and conducted through purposive and snowball sampling. The data was translated, transcribed, and then coded into NVivo software which was then analyzed inductively through an iterative thematic process. The findings of this research demonstrate the importance of context in understanding PECs and their implications on disaster response and recovery. For cordons to be feasible, many factors such as resource challenges (physical, economic, and human) and provisions for temporary housing, welfare, access to essential services, security, and availability of alternative transportation routes are essential. In addition, legislative frameworks, trust in government institutions, and cultural nuances need to be taken into consideration if PECs are to be feasible as a disaster response and recovery strategy. This paper illustrates the application of a multi- methodological approach based on the sequential application of three different techniques for assessing the multidimensional impacts generated by the realization of the Ma.Ri. House temporary housing, located in the city of Turin. The applied methodologies are (1) SWOT analysis for the preliminary examination of the project context, to highlight its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, which are fundamental elements to be considered for the definition of the project strategy, (2) Stakeholder Analysis to identify the multiplicity of stakeholder involved and affected by the Ma.Ri. House project, highlighting their different interests, (3) Community Impact Evaluation (CIE) for the assessment of the nature and intensity of the possible multidimensional impacts derived from the project implementation that could affect the stakeholder involved. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate local housing policy, which is a complex, multi-actorial and social relevance issue. The proposed methodological framework aims to support decision-makers in identifying a strategy that considers the different interests and maximizes the positive impacts for the different stakeholder involved. Specifically, the proposed methodological approach has been applied to evaluate the preliminary stage of the implementation of the temporary housing Ma.Ri. House. Questo articolo illustra l’applicazione di un approccio multi-metodologico basato sull’applicazione sequenziale di tre diverse tecniche per la valutazione degli impatti generati dalla realizzazione della residenza temporanea Ma.Ri. House, localizzata nella città di Torino. Le metodologie applicate sono: (1) l’analisi SWOT per l’analisi preliminare del contesto progettuale, per evidenziarne i punti di forza, le debolezze, le opportunità e le minacce; tutti elementi da considerare nella definizione della strategia progettuale, (2) l’analisi degli Stakeholders per identificare la molteplicità dei soggetti interessati dal progetto in esame, evidenziandone i differenti interessi, (3) la Community Impact Evaluation (CIE) per la valutazione della natura e intensità dei possibili impatti multi- dimensionali derivati dalla realizzazione del progetto che potrebbero interessare gli stakeholders coinvolti. Pertanto, il presente contributo si propone di indagare il tema di grande rilevanza sociale, quale l’abitare contemporaneo nella sua complessità e multi-attorialità. Infatti, il framework metodologico si pone come obiettivo quello di supportare i decisori nell’individuazione della strategia che consideri i diversi interessi in gioco e massimizzi gli impatti positivi per i diversi stakeholders coinvolti.
