In the era of Industry 4.0, the demand fluctuation has become fiercer due to the characteristics of diversification, customisation, and uncertainty. Reconfigurability of manufacturing systems has been proven to be a useful and necessary feature when it comes to handling demand uncertainty. This feature can be achieved through the implementation of reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) and delayed reconfigurable manufacturing system (D-RMS). D-RMS is a subclass of RMS that focuses primarily on improving the convertibility of the manufacturing system. The two main phases involved in implementing D-RMS are part family formation and configuration design. Therefore, we proposed a multi-objective joint optimisation method of part family formation and configuration design according to the philosophy of D-RMS. Firstly, we develop a multi-objective joint optimisation model that takes into account investment cost, reconfiguration cost, similarity coefficient, and delayed reconfiguration to optimise the part family and configuration of D-RMS simultaneously. Three types of machine tools namely dedicated machine tools, flexible machine tools, and reconfigurable machine tools are considered in the optimisation model. Secondly, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III (NSGA-III) is adopted to solve the proposed multi-objective integer programming problem. This paper shows that Spinoza went through a drastic change in his view on divine teleology, and that this change is worth paying attention to. In the Short Treatise (KV), Spinoza endorsed a version of divine teleology. As is widely recognized, however, he explicitly rejects divine teleology in the Ethics. I argue that this marks a significant change in his view. To illustrate the significance, I argue that Spinoza consistently maintains the following two premises in both the KV and the Ethics: (1) human beings act on account of some end; (2) human actions are actions of God. While the endorsement of divine teleology is consistent with these two, the rejection of divine teleology results in a trilemma. The trilemma, to be sure, can be resolved by introducing referential opacity to divine action contexts. I argue, however, that it is worth asking why Spinoza revised his view in this way. In Marx's posthumously published manuscripts from 1857–1863, we find a systematic exposition of his concept of subsumption. Though much has been written about it, significant interpretative gaps persist. In this article, I begin filling these gaps by examining the emergence of Marx's concept of subsumption. I will argue that in the Grundrisse Marx brings together distinct but complementary elements from Hegel's theories of judgment and teleology to coin two new and well delineated concepts of subsumption that prefigure his later concepts of formal and real subsumption. These two concepts may be defined as: (a) the process of acquiring the social relational property of being a means to an end; (b) the process by which changes in non-relational properties occur in something due to this acquisition – and occur to better suit said end. There is a tension at the heart of Aristotle's understanding of organic activities, created by his appeals to the productive activities of craftsmen and his use of normative language to characterize the goals of such activities. In this paper I discuss two ways of interpreting Aristotle's teleology aimed at resolving this tension, and discuss a closely analogous tension at the heart of a number of contemporary defenses of teleological reasoning in biology. The study of teleology is challenging in many ways, but there is a particular challenge that makes matters worse, distorting the conceptual space that has set the terms of debate. And that is the tendency to think about teleology in terms of certain long‐established dichotomies. In this paper, we examine four such dichotomies prevalent in the literature on teleology, the notions that: 1) Teleological explanations are opposed to mechanistic explanations; 2) teleology must arise from processes operating either internal to an organism or external to it; 3) systems are either alive and teleological, or nonliving and not teleological; 4) humans are teleological, on account of our ability to intend, seek, prefer, etc., while other systems without these capacities are not. Here, we use our own view of goal directedness, field theory, to show for each dichotomy that there is an alternative, a view of teleology that either violates these dichotomies or demands revision of them. According to the standard formulation, natural selection requires variation, differential fitness, and heritability. I argue that this formulation is inadequate because it fails to distinguish natural selection from artificial selection, intelligent design, forward-looking orthogenetic selection, and adaptation via the selection of nonrandom variation. I suggest adding a no teleology condition. The no teleology condition says that the evolutionary process is not guided toward an endpoint represented in the mind of an agent, variation is produced randomly with respect to adaptation, and selection pressures are not forward looking. To naturalize the concept of teleological causality in biology it is not enough to avoid assuming backward causation or positing the existence of an inscrutable teleological essence like the élan vital. We must also specify how the causality of organisms is distinct from the causality of designed artifacts like thermostats or asymmetrically oriented processes like the ubiquitous increase of entropy. Historically, the concept of teleological causality in biology has been based on an analogy to the familiar experience of purposeful action. This is experienced by us as a disposition to achieve a general type of end that is represented in advance, and which regulates the selection of efficient means to achieve it. Inspired by this analogy, to bridge the gap between biology and human agency we describe a simple molecular process called autogenesis that shows how two linked complementary self-organizing processes can give rise to higher-order relations that resemble purposeful dispositions, though expressed in terms of constraints on molecular processes. Because the autogenic model is described in sufficient detail to be empirically realizable, it provides a proof of principle demonstrating a simple form of teleological causality. The aim of this paper is to compare the theory of Gestalt qualities, introduced by the Austrian philosopher Christian von Ehrenfels (1859–1932), with the concept of Umwelt, proposed by Jakob von Uexküll (1864–1944). The primary basis for the comparison will be the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908–1961), who extensively discusses the two concepts in his work. In the Uexküll–Ehrenfelsian context, we focus on analysing the similarities and differences of their argumentation and model approaches to understanding the living and non-living natural entities, their mutual communication, development, and ontological grounding. We also consider the role of individual experience with the environment: in that context, the metaphysical frameworks within which the two thinkers operate in their efforts to explain natural phenomena are central to our comparative reflections. The significance of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood’s bond in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility has been well acknowledged by critics. In the midst of lackluster suitors, malicious relations, and brazen gossips, Elinor and Marianne’s relationship seems the only one that really matters in the end. Yet despite the centrality of Elinor and Marianne’s intimacy, the novel concludes with their respective marriages to Edward Ferrars and Colonel Brandon. Turning our attention toward the phenomenology of hands and touch in Sense and Sensibility, however, changes the way we approach narrative by undermining the teleology of the marriage plot. In contrast to the hollow acts and mediating objects of affection offered by potential suitors, Willoughby and Edward Ferrars, Elinor and Marianne’s handholding constitutes deeply affective and unmediated moments of physical contact that attest to the primacy of touch underlying the most passionate attachments. In this light, the concluding marriages do not recant the rest of the novel but rather serve a strategic choice motivated by what these marriages make possible. Far from enforcing heterosexual closure, Elinor and Marianne’s marriages fulfill a different agenda: preserving the sisters’ lasting haptic contact with one another. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that it is time to set aside traditional teleological narratives about late medieval English standardization in favor of a different approach that accepts the distinctive functions—as well as forms—of the language during the period. It identifies a series of correlations between spelling systems, text types, and script choices found in late Middle English manuscripts and aligns the resulting groupings with particular discourse communities and communities of practice. Texts covered include important manuscripts of the works of Chaucer, Gower, and Langland. The paper includes a plea for an integration—or perhaps more correctly reintegration—of paleography and linguistic study, as part of a broader reimagining of the philological endeavor: a reimagining that aligns with recent trends in the exciting interdisciplinary paradigm known as historical pragmatics. Investment casting process is a well-recognized manufacturing process to produce industrial castings with tight, narrow tolerances, good surface finish, as well as higher complexity for many diversified sectors. However, complexity of investment castings is mostly represented by qualitative manner, and quantitative representation of complexity is not fully explored. In this work, efforts have been put to identify distinguished attributes contributing complexity involved in manufacturing investment castings and in quantifying it. In total, different 52 attributes that further characterize 212 meta-attributes were identified through rigorous survey conducted in one of the largest investment casting clusters representing nearly 25% of total investment casting foundries in India. These 52 attributes represent 19 elements that further signify 3 factors (geometry, features and manufacturability) contributing in overall complexity index. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been adopted for computing relative weight for factors, elements, attributes as well as meta-attributes that further used in computation of complexity index. Developed complexity index was tested with several industrial castings and found it very useful. This will really help the designer to assist in the selection of the investment casting process for manufacturing industrial castings, and will contribute to the philosophy of design for manufacturing, and in turn, to design for investment casting (DFIC). Introduction: Kidney diseases frequently complicate cancer and its treatment, contributing to both morbidity and mortality. Malignancies can give rise to various kidney issues, such as glomerulonephritis and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This association operates bidirectionally, with patients experiencing the development of renal diseases due to cancer, and CKD predisposing to cancer. Furthermore, nephrotoxicity induced by chemotherapy can result in Acute Tubular Injury (ATI) and necrosis, imposing limitations on its application. Aim: To evaluate the spectrum of renal pathology in autopsies of malignancies. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective crosssectional study of complete autopsies of all cases of malignancies performed in the Department of Pathology, Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The study was carried out over a 5-year period from January 2015 to December 2019. Analysis of cases with respect to demographics, type of primary malignancy, gross and microscopic features, and the final cause of death was conducted. These findings were meticulously tabulated, with frequencies and percentages calculated for each category. Results: A total of 4392 autopsies were conducted throughout the study period, with 120 of them revealing the presence of malignancies. A total of 38 (31.6%) malignancies were diagnosed for the first time at autopsy. The commonest renal findings on gross were scars (superficial and deep) seen in 40 (33.33%), followed by cortical cysts in 25 (20.83%), granular contracted kidney in 15 (12.50%), mass lesions in 7 (5.83%), abscesses in 7 (5.83%), and swollen, oedematous kidneys in 6 (5%) autopsies. The most frequent renal pathology on microscopy were infective lesions seen in 43 (35.83%), Acute Tubular Necrosis (ATN) in 32 (26.66%), ATI in 30 (25%), followed by malignancies- primary and secondary in 11 (9.16%), tubular casts in 6 (5%), etc. Rare findings included membranous glomerulonephritis and Tumour Lysis Syndrome (TLS) (Acute urate nephropathy) in 1 (0.83%) each. The TLS case had classic histomorphological features of TLS, apart from laboratory parameters. Extensive deposits of uric acid crystals were seen obstructing the tubules as well as some of the glomeruli on microscopy. Conclusion: In one-third of the cases, the malignancy was exclusively discovered during the autopsy. The study revealed a diverse array of lesions, encompassing pyelonephritis, ATN, primary and metastatic renal tumours, cast nephropathy, membranous glomerulonephritis, and TLS. One-fifth of the cases had end-stage renal disease (advanced renal disease). A significant number of the cases exhibited tumour masses within the kidneys. One-fifth of the cases had renal pathology contributing to the final cause of death, further highlighting the association between malignancies and renal pathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to endeavor to shed light on the underlying causal mechanisms behind the failure of startups by examining the failure process in such organizations. To achieve this goal, the study conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on the definition of failure and its various dimensions, resulting in the compilation of a comprehensive list of causes of startup failure. Subsequently, the failure process was analyzed using a behavioral strategy approach that encompasses rationality, plasticity and shaping, as well as the growth approach of startups based on dialectic, teleology and evolution theories. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed research methodology was a case study using process tracing, with the sample being a failed platform in the ride-hailing technology sector. The causal mechanism was further explicated through the combined application of the behavioral strategy approach and interpretive structural modeling analysis. Findings: The findings of the study suggest that the failure of startups is a result of interlinked causes and effects, and growth in these organizations is driven by dialectic, teleology and evolution theories. Originality/value: The outcomes of the research can assist startups in formulating an effective strategy to deliver the right value proposition to the market, thereby reducing the chances of failure. Steel-fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) has been increasingly used in the field of engineering structures in recent years. Hence, the accurate monitoring of the fracturing process of in-service SFRC has considerable significance in terms of structural safety. This paper investigates the acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) features characterising the damage behaviour of SFRC samples in compression. For all the tests, cumulated AE, b-value, βt coefficient, average frequency, and rise angle are considered to describe the actual SFRC failure mechanisms. The results show that SFRC exhibits enhanced toughness compared to normal concrete (NC), with an indicated transition from a brittle to a ductile structural behaviour. This improved behaviour can be attributed to the bridging effect of steel fibres, which also drives the progressive tensile-to-shear crack transition, thus being the main cause of the final SFRC failure. As the loading rate increases, there is a corresponding increase in the number of shear cracks, leading to a decrease in the overall ductility and toughness of SFRC. Moreover, since the number of shear cracks notably increases right before SFRC fracture, this can serve as a safety warning of the impending failure. Furthermore, the cumulated AE curve displays a strong discontinuity in the occurrence of an unstable fracturing process in SFRC, which can also be forecasted by the AE time-scaling coefficient βt. The AE and DIC features can be used as failure precursors in the field of structural surveying, offering an accurate technical support for engineering failure warnings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A built-in wave energy converter (BI-WEC) is a type of WEC that is fully encapsulated within a floating body that is easy to integrate and promotes reliability. Significant advantages in integration and reliability make BI-WECs a promising pathway to achieve an in situ power supply for massive distributed marine equipment (such as ships, buoys, or USVs). A comprehensive review of the recent advances in built-in wave energy converters can help address the most relevant issues in BI-WEC development. This study enumerates recent progress on BI-WECs (energy capture, power take-off, and control) and summarizes the characteristics of various designs. Different design philosophies and technical pathways can be better understood through the classification and analysis offered by this study. This review helps to form a basic understanding of BI-WEC development to achieve in situ power sustainability for a large amount of distributed marine equipment in long-term sustained marine operations. Research suggests that entrepreneurs persuade stakeholders to engage in risky projects in an uncertain future through visions, compelling narratives of the future. A unique challenge for entrepreneurs, however, is how entrepreneurs can construct a narrative that unites stakeholders with different perceptions of the degree of risk or uncertainty posed by the future. We address this question with a diegetic narrative model of stakeholder enrollment. Our primary argument is that, to reduce variation in how potential stakeholders view the future, a story must embed a vision of the future in a coherent and collectively held narrative of the past. We introduce rhetorical history as the primary construct through which this occurs. We demonstrate how successful visions employ historical tropes at the intradiegetic level to appeal to individual perceptions of risk or uncertainty and how those historical tropes are combined into meta-narratives or myths drawn from the collective memory of a community to create broad, extradiegetic appeal to broader categories of potential stakeholders with heterogeneous temporal orientations. Finally, we describe three categories of historical reasoning—teleology, presentism, and retro-futurism—that act as bridging mechanisms between past, present, and future that provides stakeholders with an enhance sense of agency in the future. The article is dedicated to the comparative analysis of the phenomenon of secularism in the works of the Russian philosopher and theologian Fr. Sergius Bulgakov and the English theologian John Milbank. The specifics of the concept of “secularism”, its relation to the tradition of russian religious philosophy are revealed. The multidimensional nature of this relationship is emphasized: Russian thought is described both as a reaction to modern secularism and as its direct continuation. Although at the moment researchers have not reached consensus on determining the nature of the connection between Russian religious philosophy and secularism, the very fact of this connection seems to be beyond doubt. Resorting to Milbank’s theory, the author reveals the internal contradictions of secular reason: on the one hand, it is assumed to be autonomous and having the possibilities of real political action, on the other hand, it is described as constructed and derived. It is noted that this contradiction is due to the genealogy of secularism, which roots lie in the nominalist theology focused on univocal concepts. This aspect plays a crucial role in the construction of the paradigm of “autonomy of political reason”, which determines the course of development of the modern era. Bulgakov’s thought confirms Milbank’s thesis: secularized sciences, such as sociology and economics, always have a hidden theological and metaphysical basis underlying the unity of their construction. Further analysis focuses on the criticism of economic theory carried out by Milbank and Bulgakov: it is revealed that Hegel, being involved in the genealogy of the “autonomy of political reason”, determined the course of development of such modern ideologies as liberalism and Marxism. Based on the results obtained, the author, referring to the theses of Bulgakov and Milbank, suggests the possibility of developing an alternative model of modernity based on analogical, teleological and sophiological approaches.

Over 160 years after Darwin and 70 years after the discovery of DNA, two fundamental questions of biology remain unanswered: What differentiates the living from the nonliving? How can mechanistic and finalistic or holistic biology be unified? Niels Bohr introduced a concept of complementarity in quantum physics and based on the paradox of light as a simultaneous wave and particle, conjectured that a similar concept might exist in biology that would solve the paradox of life originating from the nonliving. Bohr proposed that two mutually exclusive-independent observations may be necessary to explain a phenomenon and provided support to Immanuel Kant's idea that the "purposive" behaviour of organisms could only be explained in teleological terms and that mechanical and teleological approaches were necessary and complementary to explain biology. We present a concept of complementarity whereby biochemical pathways or cellular channels for the flow of information are simultaneously complex and redundant and complexity and redundancy complement each other. The postulates of biological complementarity are that (1) it was an essential condition in the origin of life; (2) it provided physiological flexibility that allowed organisms to mount self-protection response and complexity to evolve in the face of deleterious mutations before the evolution of bi-parental sex; (3) it laid the foundation for the evolution of a choice of response when confronted with threat; and (4) it applies to all levels of biological organizations and, thus, can serve as a basis for the unification of mechanistic and holistic biology. It is proposed that teleology is simultaneously constitutive and heuristic: constitutive because organisms' "purposive" behaviours are adaptive and are grounded in mechanism (complexity and redundancy), and heuristic because with our finite cognition and our goal-oriented (humans alone are aware of "tomorrow") and anthropomorphic pre-disposition, teleology will remain useful as a guide to our making sense of the world, even how to ask a meaningful question. In recent years, narrative accounts of the self have gained increasing attention. It is widely accepted that humans are storytelling creatures, that stories shape our self‐conception, and that we fail to be agents without a narrative framework. While there is less agreement on what constitutes a narrative, it is generally understood to be more than a chronological listing of life events; it is also an account of the explanatory relationships among these events—a story of how events lead to other events. However, specifying the nature of this explanatory relationship has proven difficult. As critics have pointed out, narrativists often resort to simplistic notions of narrative when faced with criticism. The concept of narrative explanation needs to be elaborated in a way that is both substantive enough to exclude trivial behaviours from being considered narratives and nonrestrictive enough to accommodate ordinary lives that may not be particularly story‐like. In this paper, I review existing accounts of narrative explanation and propose a teleological account, according to which narratives consist of goal‐directed explanations of a sequence of events. I argue that a teleological account of narrative explanation can be a fruitful way to clarify the concept of "narrative" in the context of the narrative self by addressing the most common objections. Based on a reading of Carl Schmitt proposed by Jacques Derrida, this article examines the modern conceptual architecture that organizes the notions of « power », « State », « politics » and « law » into a system. In his Politics of Friendship, Derrida develops the thesis that an important Western intellectual tradition, whose apex is the work of Schmitt, tried to isolate the meaning of politics through a teleology of enmity. He demonstrates, then, that this teleology is permeated by insurmountable contradictions, and the project of a phenomenology of the political is doomed to failure. We will add another layer to this critique. By reading the texts that revolve around Schmitt's magnum opus The nomos of the Earth, we explore the modern division between two levels of violence. The first, organised by European public law, is the one that has seen the political realm centred on the State and its people. The second, marked by unlimited violence, is the one whose aim is the complete appropriation of the lands and bodies discovered in the New World. One of the main subjects of the science of Kalam (Islamic theology) is the issue of the existence and oneness of Almighty Allah. He is a being that is both transcendent with His essence and immanent with His attributes. Allah has created beings to manifest His essence and has created His art to manifest His attributes. Humans can attain knowledge of His existence by reflecting upon creation. Among the most important topics in the science of Kalam is the section on "divinity" (ulūhiyya). A relationship is established between divinity and the universe. This relationship is pursued through the evidence of Allah’s existence. Among the classical proofs, there is the argument from purposiveness and order in existence. The content of the argument from purposiveness and order encompasses the issue of beauty, which is the most important topic of the science of aesthetics. The aesthetic proof holds a significant place in recognizing the existence of Allah. In attaining the existence of Allah, we draw upon both the material beauty in existence and the moral beauty found among human behaviors. Therefore, at the core of this subject lies the concept of "beauty." "Beauty" is a universal reality. The highest expression of beauty is manifested in art. The greatest aim of Islamic art is to establish the connection of tawhid (oneness) between religion and art. This is achieved through the concept of beauty in existence. In this context, all the beauties we observe in the universe are reflections of Divine art. The concept of beauty in existence is too vast to be confined to matter alone. In this context, beauty has both material and spiritual dimensions. In Islamic belief, the essential aim is not just to know what is purely beautiful, but to seek the absolute truth through beauty. This paper investigates conceptions of explanation, teleology, and analogy in the works of Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) and Georges Cuvier (1769–1832). Richards (2000, 2002) and Zammito (2006, 2012, 2018) have argued that Kant's philosophy provided an obstacle for the project of establishing biology as a proper science around 1800. By contrast, Russell (1916), Outram (1986), and Huneman (2006, 2008) have argued, similar to suggestions from Lenoir (1989), that Kant's philosophy influenced the influential naturalist Georges Cuvier. In this article, I wish to expand on and further the work of Russell, Outram, and Huneman by adopting a novel perspective on Cuvier and considering (a) the similar conceptions of proper science and explanation of Kant and Cuvier, and (b) the similar conceptions of the role of teleology and analogy in the works of Kant and Cuvier. The similarities between Kant and Cuvier show, contrary to the interpretation of Richards and Zammito, that some of Kant's philosophical ideas, whether they derived from him or not, were fruitfully applied by some life scientists who wished to transform life sciences into proper sciences around 1800. The fourteenth-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight shows how an idiosyncratic literary text can open new ways of thinking about that unruly topic, time. Through close readings of the poem and its sole surviving manuscript, I demonstrate how Gawain elaborates its own vision of dynamic, social time in its descriptions of time and characters. Through its evasion of teleologies, the poem offers a critique of discourses of inevitability. Gawain complicates an already complex picture of medieval time-schemes, demonstrating how literary works can add nuance to our understanding of how medieval time worked. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to some of the past half-century's most influential critics of liberalism, John Locke is the pivotal subverter of the pre-modern ethical tradition. Locke's view of nature and of human nature, the story goes, divorced ethics from natural teleology and so set off an inevitable spiral downward into moral dissolution. This story about Locke remains influential even though the last fifty years of Locke scholarship have brought a cascade of studies treating Locke as operating within the tradition of Reformed natural law. These studies, in part because they embrace a distorted view of Locke's conception of the person, have failed to address satisfactorily the crux of the story told by the critics of liberalism. This article corrects that distortion and demonstrates how natural teleology operates within Locke's ethics. I show how Locke sought to identify the teleological ordering of human beings to the supreme good by developing a relational conception of the person, analysing the human being as embedded in and defined by a web of relationships including neighbour and God. The result is a Locke far more in continuity with pre-modern ethical approaches than has hitherto been realized, one who sought to preserve natural teleology for the modern world. Coregonus populations across their Holarctic range have often undergone unexplained collapses. Here, we document causes of collapse for two of the largest Coregonus populations in the world, cisco (C. artedi) in Green Bay, Lake Michigan, and Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, during the 1950s. We used simulation models, rank‐order correlations, and historical literature to evaluate effects of overfishing, interactions with introduced rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), and overwinter bottom hypoxia on both cisco populations. Fully selected exploitation rates for cisco were alarmingly high (0.82–0.84), correlations and anecdotal evidence suggested negative interactions with rainbow smelt, and extensive areas of hypoxia coincident with cisco declines suggested incubation of cisco embryos was impaired regionally. Our findings suggested that negative effects of rainbow smelt were mainly responsible for the cisco population collapse in Green Bay and that overfishing and hypoxia had suppressed the Saginaw Bay cisco population before rainbow smelt caused its final collapse. Throughout history, most genuinely good ideas have been the same ideas, albeit presented differently by philosophers and theorists or presented only in part by different schools of thought. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Alfred Adler compiled good ideas and presented an elegant framework for understanding the human condition. A hundred years have passed, and nothing has suggested that Adler got it wrong or missed any critical factor. But as with any model, followers and theoretical visitors pick and choose their favorite elements of the theory and fail to understand the model's core elements. Without a holistic understanding, the elegance and potential usefulness of the model can be lost. This article distinguishes the core theoretical components from more tangential aspects to provide a theoretical overview and useful model of the human condition, which should make the more tangential aspects of this model and other approaches more understandable and sensibly applied. In this paper, we discuss with some contemporary Thomists the possibility of re-actualizing Thomas's fifth way to God in the science–theology dialogue. We start with a reference to Spinoza's critique of teleology in light of some recent Spinoza studies, and after summarizing several Thomistic defenses of Aquinas's teleological argument, we interpret that critique as targeting the fifth way as well. We then focus on Darwin's impact on biological design arguments. We argue that his naturalistic explanation of biological teleology also affects the fifth way. The distinction between internal-Aristotelian and external-Platonic conceptions of teleology does not seem to be able to protect the teleological argument from a Darwinian critique. We conclude by stressing the importance and fruitfulness of Thomas's thought for contemporary interdisciplinary dialogue, provided that Darwin's impact on the biological version of the fifth way is taken into due account. Drum patterns are fundamental to popular music's soundscape. But the majority of music-theoretical scholarship about drum patterns focuses on their rhythmic and metric features, and there is no widely adopted method for analyzing how drum patterns help express form across complete songs. Grounded in a corpus study from the Billboard Year-End Pop Airplay Songs charts from 2012-2021, this article introduces an analytical method that succinctly depicts the main characteristics of post-millennial pop drum patterns in order to highlight the significant and specific ways they help express formal boundaries, teleological functions, and formal motion. Drum patterns in this repertoire are typically a variation of a standard rock or f our-on-the-floor pattern, and my context-based analytical system frames drum patterns as different realizations of three parameters: number of layers, rhythm, and instrumentation. A song's multiple drum patterns can be analyzed and compared according to these characteristics, and these characteristics can also be used to classify drum pattern changes. In the second half of the article, I present analyses that, in addition to showcasing the system's utility, emphasize two broad points: that drum patterns can be a primary expresser of teleological functions within individual sections, across formal cycles, and throughout complete songs; and that drum patterns can help express post-millennial pop's conventional layouts and more novel formal designs. Has the renewal of interest in the ostensible agency of living beings signaled an advance from a merely heuristic Kantian sense of purposiveness to an unequivocally, empirically grounded research program or are there as yet hidden tensions or contradictions in, for example, the organizational autonomy approach to natural agency? Can normativity be found to be immanent in nature but only beginning with the living cell or must a thoroughgoing naturalism find the seeds of normativity immanent throughout abiotic as well as biotic nature? Beginning with a brief exposition of Kant´s influential treatment and recommendation for how to methodologically combine what he took to be the inevitable epistemological limit to explaining the origins of ostensible biotic purposefulness with the legitimate intentions of scientific research and explanation, this essay will critically engage with three recent essays that attempt to grapple with the preceding questions. Having putatively raised questions about the consistency and adequacy of each of the individual positions, the essay will attempt to move synthetically, drawing upon aspects of all three contributions, in the direction of a "cooperativity theoretic" approach to incipient natural normativity and agency. The production of lithium‐ion batteries consists of a long and complex process chain. The individual process steps influence each other, resulting in unknown cause‐and‐effect interactions. As a result, production fluctuations cause variations in the final battery cell properties, which, coupled with high material costs, lead to costly scrap. Sensor and machine data provide important information during production about the manufacturing and condition of intermediate products. However, a challenge exists, in that these valuable production data cannot be precisely assigned to the corresponding intermediate products, and consequently, the cause of the production fluctuation cannot be explained. In this article, a method for tracking and tracing single‐electrode sections from coating to formation is described. Using the example of areal mass loading, it shows that all production data for the electrode production can be assigned automatically to the individual electrode sheets. In addition, all production data for cell assembly and cell finalization can be assigned to each cell stack and thus to the electrodes used. The monitored electrode areal mass loading of individual electrode sheets enables the identification of deviating electrode sections and a cell‐specific calculation of the final capacity from manufactured battery cells. In this paper I raise three questions regarding the status and function of Absolute Knowing in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. First, can Hegel’s Absolute Knowing be understood as an epiphany? Secondly, how does epiphany make sense of the teleological elements that activate and mobilise the movement towards Absolute Knowing? And thirdly, how does such an interpretation shift the focus from a closed reading of Hegel’s text – that views Absolute Knowing as consummately realised – to an open reading that keeps the Absolute within its purview, but also seeks to foreground its aporias? I pursue these questions through an examination of the key constituents of knowledge: the subject of knowledge, its object, and the process through which knowledge is attained. The argument from design used to prove the existence of God is one of the arguments to which David Hume has devoted the most attention. On the one hand, this analogical reasoning is based on observational evidence. For that reason, it could be considered a particularly attractive type of argument for an empiricist philosopher. In fact, Hume uses this a posteriori argument in several of his works. On the other hand, Hume's position on this type of reasoning is not entirely clear. The philosopher defends this argument on several occasions and criticizes it on others. This paper aims to investigate Hume's analysis of the argument from design. In particular, we will highlight the peculiarities of the philosopher's remarks in the Dialogues on natural religion. We will analyze the significance of Hume's position in the Dialogues regarding the so-called "Philon's conversion". We will show that "Philo's conversion" at the end of the work could represent the positive scope that Hume attributes to this type of arguments in his theoretical philosophy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to examine Takada Shinji's (1893–1975) view of the 'Mandate of Heaven (天命 tenmei)'. Takada understood the 'Imperial Way (皇道 kōdō)' as one of two axes, the 'Mandate of Heaven' and the 'Rectification of Names (正名 seimei)', together they made possible a theoretical systematization of the 'Imperial Way' discourse as well as its concrete political embodiment. It is undeniable that the ideas of the 'Imperial Way' received heavy criticism after WWII. Because it was used as a problematic ideology in Imperial Japan. Nonetheless, it is necessary to grasp its original meaning as understood by its theoretical founder and innovators. This paper thus turns to examine Takada's unique understanding of the 'Mandate of Heaven' from the belief that such an examination should precede before starting a more systematic and comprehensive discussion of the 'Imperial Way' discourse. Calls for an ethically aligned technology design have led companies to publish lists of value principles that their engineers should adhere to. However, it is questionable whether such lists can grasp a technology's wide-ranging ethical implications. The bottom-up elicitation of values from the specific technology context avoids problems that predefined lists of values have but has been criticized for lacking an ethical foundation. In this empirical study, we explore how three grand ethical theories of Western philosophy—utilitarianism, virtue ethics, and deontology—can support the discovery of values. Based on three technologies, our results show that ethical perspectives can support IT professionals in identifying values that are not only context-specific but also cater to higher ethical principles (i.e., intrinsic values) and a broad spectrum of sustainability goals (e.g., economic, technical, individual). Each theory of ethics served a unique role in the identification of ethical issues and value potentials of a technology. However, results also suggest a focus on mainstream values and individual values while environmental issues were neglected. We conclude that theories of ethics encourage different perspectives on a specific technology and thus argue for a pluralist ethical basis for values in technology design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses Moses Maimonides' account of the AfterDeath and, more specifically, of olam ha-ba' (lit.: the world to come), the state of ultimate human happiness and perfection (in contrast to this world). Maimonides is unequivocal about what olam ha-ba' is not. Contrary to a competing medieval Jewish tradition, it is utterly incorporeal and, contrary to rabbinic tradition, it is not a motivational reward nor compensation for undeserved suffering in a theodicy. Instead, Maimonides gives two positive accounts of the metaphysics of olam ha-ba'. The first is an intellectualist account on which the denizens of olam ha-ba' are perfected intellects engaged in intellectual apprehension of the deity. The second is sceptical: it denies that humans have any understanding or knowledge ('ilm , episteme) of olam ha-ba' and claims that all language used to describe it is purely equivocal or homonymous, although it allows that some immutable thing, whatever it is, survives death. Instead of being a motivational reward or compensation, olam ha-ba' is the end, that is, final cause or telos, of the best possible human life in this world at which one aims and which one attempts to approximate even if one cannot actually realize it. In this study, the viscous polymer processing (VPP) technique is implemented to optimize the characteristics of bulk (1- x)BaTiO 3 - x Bi(Mg 0·5 Ti 0.5)O 3 (BT- x BMT) lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics, with a focus on enhancing the recoverable energy storage density (W rec), improving breakdown strength resistance (E b), and increasing storage efficiency (η). The influence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) inclusion in the VPP process on the resulting dielectric ceramics is thoroughly investigated, covering rheological, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties. The results reveal that a gradual increase in PVA quantity during the VPP process effectively improves the density of ceramic blanks. However, an excess of PVA leads to void formation in the ceramic blanks post-debinding, hindering the achievement of a dense structure in the final ceramics and causing performance degradation. The resulting BT-0.405BMT-40 wt% PVA ceramic showed excellent storage performance, with W rec , η , and E b of 6.55 J/cm3 81.45 %, and 480 kV/cm, respectively. In comparison to bulk BT-0.405BMT ceramics, there is a notable 2.47-fold increase in W rec and a 1.92-fold increase in E b , accompanied by a substantial improvement in η. Moreover, the BT-BMT-40 wt% PVA ceramic exhibits favorable temperature stability (30–150 °C), frequency stability (1–50 Hz), and commendable charge/discharge performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a coherent and comprehensive proposal of a renewed contemporary Aristotelian–Thomistic approach to the evolutionary view of reality and the position of theistic evolution. Beginning with a proposal of a hylomorphically–grounded essentialist definition of species—framed within a broader revival of biological essentialism—a constructive model of the Aristotelian–Thomistic metaphysics of evolution is being offered, together with a reflection on the alleged violation of the principle of proportionate causation in evolutionary transitions and the role of teleology and chance in evolution. The theological part of the article addresses a number of questions concerning the Thomistic school of theology in its encounter with the evolutionary worldview, including the question of whether God creates through evolution, the query concerning the concurrence of divine and created causes in evolutionary transitions, and the question regarding evolutionary and theological notions of anthropogenesis. A list of ten postulates grounding a contemporary Thomistic version of theistic evolution is offered as a conclusion to the research presented in the text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conventional approaches to causation in the social sciences draw on approaches in the Philosophy of Science in which a causal force acts on cases and generates change in the form of events. This relies on just one of the Aristotelian conceptions of cause – efficient cause – what brings the effect in to being. We should also pay attention to Final Cause – purpose and Formal cause, what makes something what it is and no other.The somethings are complex far from equilbric socio-ecological systems in which human agency has causal powers. This resonates with the understanding of the nature of effect in the complexity frame of reference as the state of the system both in relation to stability and transformation of kind. Effects are systems states. The argument draws on Hegel's and Dewey's understandings of cause / effect relationships as not separable but intimately interwoven. Effects have continuing reciprocal impacts on causes themselves as in positive feedback in systems. This way of thinking about causation allows us to engage with macro social change. Intuitive conceptions based on cognitive biases (teleology, anthropomorphism, and essentialism) often prove helpful in everyday life while simultaneously being problematic in scientific contexts. Nonetheless, students often have intuitive conceptions of scientific topics such as evolution. As potential approaches to enable students to selfregulate their conceptions in the context of evolution, we investigated the effectiveness of two instructional approaches that are based on metacognition and selfregulated learning: (a) a formative criteria-referenced self-assessment of one's conceptions and (b) instruction on conditional metaconceptual knowledge (metacognitive knowledge about why and in which contexts specific conceptions are appropriate or not). We conducted an experimental intervention study using a 2 x 2 factorial (plus an additional control group), pre-post-follow-up-test design in German upper secondary level biology classes (N = 730). The groups that received one or both interventions had higher conceptual knowledge (i.e., used less intuitive conceptions and/or more scientific conceptions) afterward than those whose conceptions were not addressed: The self-assessment resulted in higher use of scientific conceptions; the instruction on conditional metaconceptual knowledge additionally resulted in lower use of intuitive conceptions based on cognitive biases, more reported thought processes relating to inhibition of cognitive biases, and a better ability to identify inappropriate phrasing based on cognitive biases. No effects were found on students' self-reported metaconceptual awareness and regulation. However, the fact that students inhibited their intuitive conceptions in the post-test indicates that they were indeed metaconceptually aware of and self-regulated their conceptions. The results suggest that students can be taught to become aware of the differences between intuitive and scientific conceptions and to regulate the use of their intuitive conceptions in a scientific context. Standard narratives about physical teleology say its death was a fait accompli of the Scientific Revolution, but the principle of least action (PLA) has been taken to instantiate teleology's survival into Enlightenment physics. Other scholars claim this PLA-based teleological metaphysics fell to general philosophical attacks on final causes. None of these narratives fully captures the philosophical interest of its demise. It illustrates a metaphysics being refuted because it could not be coherently modeled in mathematics, hence directly through mathematization and not by philosophical argument or empirical test. I argue that despite the merits of Jefferson's account of a brain disorder, which are many, the notion of function she deploys is unsuitable to the overall goals of that account. In particular, Jefferson accepts Cummins' causal role theory of function and dysfunction. As the causal role view, in its standard elaborations, is wedded to human interests, goals, and values, it cannot serve as a value-neutral anchor for her hybrid "harm-dysfunction" account of disorder. The understanding of artifacts and biological phenomena has often influenced each other. This work argues that at the core of these epistemic bridges there are shared teleological notions and explanations manifested in analogies between artifacts and biological phenomena. To this end, I first propose a focus on the logical structure of minimal teleological explanations, which renders said epistemic bridges more evident than an ontological or metaphysical approach to teleology, and which can be used to describe scientific practices in different areas by virtue of formal generality and minimalism (section 2). Second, I show how this approach highlights some epistemic features shared by the understanding of artifacts and biological phenomena, like a specific kind of epistemic circularity, and how functional analogies between artifacts and biological phenomena translate such epistemic circularity from one domain to the other (section 3). Third, I conduct a case study on the scientific practice around the brain's "compass", showing how the understanding of artifacts influences purpose ascription and measurement, and frames mechanisms in biology, especially in areas where purpose ascription is most difficult, like cognitive neuroscience (sections 4 and 5).
