The Tricolored Bat is an imperiled species due to white-nose syndrome. There is limited information available on roosting and foraging area use of the species to support planning and management efforts to benefit recovery in the Southeastern United States. Female tricolored bats exit hibernation and allocate energy toward disease recovery, migration, and reproduction. Providing and managing for summer habitat is 1 strategy to promote recovery. We sought to: (1) determine local- and landscape-scale factors that influence female Tricolored Bat roost selection; (2) quantify land cover use in core and overall foraging areas; and (3) define foraging area size and distances traveled by female tricolored bats in Tennessee. Bats in this study roosted in trees of variable sizes, in multiple tree species with large canopy volumes, and almost always roosted in trees with dead leaf foliage suspended in the canopy. Forest plots used by bats had trees averaging 30 cm diameter at breast height, basal areas averaging 27 m2/ha, contained multiple tree species, and comprised around a 50:50 ratio of canopy and subcanopy trees. Bats did not roost in coniferous forest areas and were only located in deciduous and mixed forest areas. Bats foraged near and directly over water, in open areas, and along forest edges. This study increases our knowledge on habitat requirements of the species in a temperate region dominated by unfragmented forests and many large water bodies and serves a baseline for management and efforts to benefit survival, reproduction, and population recovery. As video game production is becoming increasingly data-driven, player surveillance shapes the everyday realities of users and developers. Remote online tracking and the resulting optimization and governance of in-game activity subscribe to the Big Data methodology as a way of accounting for entire player populations. By design, player surveillance serves the interests of developers and publishers, who have exclusive access to this proprietary data. Yet, discursively, these parties attempt to present surveillance as a mutually beneficial endeavor aimed at improving video games. A part of this strategy is the video game industry's selective information disclosure, which I explore empirically on the example of telemetry infographics. Based on a thematic analysis of 200 infographics from 127 games, I show how publicly disseminated infographics contribute to the normalization of player surveillance by presenting it as a source of harmless trivia to be collected and shared by fans and the specialized press. We tracked 48 young Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus) in south-central Florida from fledging through their first year and sought to define the post-fledging pre-dispersal period and the timing and drivers of permanent departure (PD) from the natal area. By examining Euclidean distances between telemetry locations and the nest for each tagged caracara, we defined the post-fledging dependency period as the first 2 mo after fledging, when fledglings remained mostly within 2.5 km of the nest and were dependent on their parents for food. Before PD, young caracaras explored areas as much as 11 km from their nest but returned to the natal area, resulting in areas used by fledglings up to 6 times the average home range size of an adult breeding pair. Some caracaras remained within their parents' home range for several months after fledging, even after becoming independent of their parents for food. A fledgling permanently departed its natal area when telemetry indicated it made an abrupt long-distance movement away from its natal area and did not return. We used generalized linear mixed models and a hierarchical modeling approach to test environmental and biological factors that may affect the timing of PD. The most supported model indicated that PD depended on parental reproductive strategy and on the timing of fledging relative to the length of the breeding season. Birds with parents that raised only one brood remained in the natal area for 11.6–21.0 wk longer than birds with parents that raised multiple broods in the same breeding season; fledglings from the first of two broods departed at a younger age, suggesting that the PD decision is partially triggered by the level of parental investment in the first and subsequent brood. Additionally, birds that fledged early in the breeding season departed the natal area 2.8–12.2 wk earlier than those that fledged later in the breeding season, and birds that were exposed to high heat during the nestling stage departed the natal area earlier than those exposed to less heat. The period between fledging and permanent departure from the natal area is important for the conservation of species with delayed dispersal. When developing a conservation strategy for Florida's caracara population, attention should be paid to protecting areas used by fledglings until PD rather than just focusing on a limited protection zone around the nest. American shad (Alosa sapidissima) are an anadromous fish species native to North America that have an extensive range, but their populations are declining. Acoustic telemetry can play a vital role in better understanding the behavior and survival of this sensitive species, but successfully handling and tagging juvenile American shad can be challenging. We conducted several experiments to determine the best methods for collecting, transporting, holding, and tagging juvenile shad. Minimizing out-of-water handling and the use of a saltwater treatment during collection increased 24 h survival from 78 to 99% after transport. Saltwater was also fundamental in keeping tagged shad alive overnight. Shad as small as 50 mm, were implanted with a dummy acoustic transmitter using a pectoral incision method with no suture. In a 60 d holding evaluation, the tagged fish survived at a rate comparable to their non-tagged counterparts (81.5% for tagged, 70% for untagged). Tagged and untagged shad also had similar survival when exposed to a tank of predators. Summary: Autonomy is becoming a prime requirement for satellite mission control operations. Data‐driven methods like Machine Learning models are playing a key role in bringing in autonomy. Health keeping data from satellite telemetry is a key ingredient in these data‐driven methods. In real‐world satellite operations, the health‐keeping telemetry data gradually drifts due to adverse space weather effects and wear and tear of electronic and mechanical components. The key question that arises is how to detect and quantify the data drift which is generally a gradual phenomenon. This paper discusses a novel statistical method for detecting data drift occurring in satellite telemetry. For the purpose of experimental work in this paper, an actual telemetry data set of the BUS CURRENT sensor which is part of the Electrical Power System of a Low Earth Orbit Satellite was considered. Data drift detection test was carried out using this sensor data using the developed novel statistical method and with Kolmogorov Smirnov test which is a probabilistic method. • The constellation control scheme based on inter-satellite constraints is proposed. • The continuous coverage constraint is reformulated to intersatellite constraints. • The semi-major axes adjustment strategy is proposed to keep continuous coverage. Mega constellations have larger number of satellites and higher distribution density compared with traditional constellations, that lead to huge tracking, telemetry and command (TT&C) requirement, heavy computation load for configuration design, and frequent configuration control due to low-Earth perturbations, collision avoidance emergencies, etc. This paper proposes a novel constellation control scheme for mega constellations with the same semi-major axis, that is based on the inter-satellite boundary constraints. Satellites do not follow the designed configuration, but keep bounded and stable flight with respect to adjacent satellites. The continuous coverage requirement is considered for priority. The inter-satellite continuous coverage constraint is formulated as right ascension of ascending node constraint and relative distance boundary constraint between every two adjacent coplanar satellites. To reduce control consumption, the boundary constraint is kept by adjusting the semi-major axes of coplanar satellites. To that end, the relationship between relative distance boundary and semi-major axis difference is studied. The semi-major axis adjustment strategy for a single satellite is proposed, and the control rules for coplanar satellites are determined. The proposed control method is verified in GW-2 sub-constellation, and is compared with relative station-keeping control method. Bioenergetics is informative for a range of fundamental and applied resource management questions, but findings are often constrained by a lack of ecological realism due to the challenges of remotely estimating key parameters such as metabolic rate. To enable field applications, we conducted a calibration study with smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu, 0.7–2 kg) surgically implanted with accelerometer transmitters and exposed to a ramp‐Ucrit swimming protocol in a swim tunnel respirometer across a range of water temperatures (6, 12, 18, and 24°C). There was an exponential increase in fish acceleration with swimming speed, and acceleration per speed was higher in smaller fish and female fish, and at colder temperatures. Mass‐specific fish metabolic rate (MO2; mg O2 kg−1 h−1) increased with swimming speed, acceleration, and temperature, and decreased with fish mass, which when combined were strong predictors of MO2. Maximum metabolic rate (MMR) was estimated to peak at 22°C, but maximum sustained swimming speed (Ucrit) remained high at c. 90–100 m s−1 above 20°C, based on second‐order polynomial functions. Aerobic scope (AS) estimates peaked at 20°C (>90% AS at 17–24°C; >50% AS at 11–28°C). Males exhibited marginally higher MMR, AS, and Ucrit than females at higher temperatures. Larger fish generally exhibited higher Ucrit, but smaller fish had a marginally broader performance range (AS, Ucrit) among temperatures, benefiting from higher MMR despite a steeper increase in resting metabolic rate with temperature. Ten state wildlife management agencies in the United States, including six within the Southeast, have delayed their spring wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) hunting seasons since 2017 by five or more days to address concerns related to the potential effects of hunting on wild turkey seasonal productivity. One hypothesis posits that if the spring hunting season is too early, there may be insufficient time for males to breed hens before being harvested, thus leading to reduced seasonal productivity. We conducted an experiment to determine whether delaying the wild turkey hunting season by 2 weeks in south‐middle Tennessee would affect various reproductive rates. In 2021 and 2022, the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission experimentally delayed the spring hunting season to open 14 days later than the traditional date (the Saturday closest to 1 April) in Giles, Lawrence, and Wayne counties. We monitored reproductive rates from 2017 to 2022 in these three counties as well as two adjacent counties, Bedford and Maury, that were not delayed. We used a Before‐After‐Control‐Impact design to analyze the proportion of hens nesting, clutch size, hatchability, nest success, poult survival and hen survival with linear mixed‐effect models and AIC model selection to detect relationships between the 14‐day delay and reproductive parameters. We detected no relationship (p >.05) between the 14‐day delay and any individual reproductive parameter. In addition, recruitment (hen poults per hen that survived until the next breeding season) was very low (<0.5) and did not increase because of the 14‐day delay. The traditional Tennessee start date had been in place since 1986 while the turkey harvest increased markedly until about 2006 and more recently stabilized. Our data indicate that moving the start of the hunting season from a period just prior to peak nest initiation to 2 weeks later, to coincide with a period just prior to peak nest incubation initiation, resulted in no change to productivity or populations in wild turkey flocks in south‐middle Tennessee. Individual‐level differences in animal spatial behavior can lead to differential exposure to risk. We assessed the risk‐exposure of a reintroduced population of kākā (Nestor meridionalis) in a fenced reserve in New Zealand by GPS tracking 10 individuals and comparing the proportion of each individual's home range beyond the reserve's fence in relation to age, sex, and fledging origin. To estimate dynamic space use, we used a sweeping window framework to estimate occurrence distributions (ODs) from temporally overlapping snapshots. For each OD, we calculated the proportion outside the reserve's fence to assess temporal risk exposure, and the area, centroid, and overlap to represent the behavioral pattern of space use. Home range area declined significantly and consistently with age, and the space use of juvenile kākā was more dynamic, particularly in relation to locational changes of space use. The wider‐ranging and more dynamic behavior of younger kākā resulted in more time spent outside the reserve, which aligned with a higher number of incidental mortality observations. Quantifying both home range and dynamic space use is an effective approach to assess risk exposure, which can provide guidance for management interventions. Drug-induced convulsions are a major challenge to drug development because of the lack of reliable biomarkers. Using machine learning, our previous research indicated the potential use of an index derived from heart rate variability (HRV) analysis in non-human primates as a biomarker for convulsions induced by GABAA receptor antagonists. The present study aimed to explore the application of this methodology to other convulsants and evaluate its specificity by testing non-convulsants that affect the autonomic nervous system. Telemetry-implanted males were administered various convulsants (4-aminopyridine, bupropion, kainic acid, and ranolazine) at different doses. Electrocardiogram data gathered during the pre-dose period were employed as training data, and the convulsive potential was evaluated using HRV and multivariate statistical process control. Our findings show that the Q-statistic-derived convulsive index for 4-aminopyridine increased at doses lower than that of the convulsive dose. Increases were also observed for kainic acid and ranolazine at convulsive doses, whereas bupropion did not change the index up to the highest dose (1/3 of the convulsive dose). When the same analysis was applied to nonconvulsants (atropine, atenolol, and clonidine), an increase in the index was noted. Thus, the index elevation appeared to correlate with or even predict alterations in autonomic nerve activity indices, implying that this method might be regarded as a sensitive index to fluctuations within the autonomic nervous system. Despite potential false positives, this methodology offers valuable insights into predicting druginduced convulsions when the pharmacological profile is used to carefully choose a compound. We tracked adult emperor penguins from Rothschild Island, west Antarctic Peninsula in 2015/2016 during a summer with extensive sea ice of long duration, contrasting with past years of reduced sea ice extent associated with the recent, rapid, warming trend across the region. We fitted ARGOS PTT devices to penguins of unknown breeding status. Of 33 penguins tracked, nine returned to the colony, presumably to provision offspring. Their foraging trips lasted 9.6 ± 3.7 days, with maximum distances of 75 ± 45 km from the colony within coastal waters. Also, 18 instruments transmitted until the initiation of the annual moult. Penguins travelled at ~ 2.3 km h−1 before slowing for moult. Post-moult, some devices continued to transmit, with speeds of ~ 0.8 km h−1, plausibly due to ice drift, which is rapid in this region. Penguins remained within the seasonal sea ice throughout, staying within 100 km of land, and generally within 5 to 10 km of features (open water, polynyas, leads, icebergs) that offered potential access to the ocean. Penguins were unlikely to have been constrained by the extensive sea ice habitat in 2015/2016. Similar habitats would also have been available in most years of the satellite record (since 1979); however, the moult locations in 2015/2016 would not have been available in many years, and penguins would have needed to find alternative moult locations during some years. Over the last three decades, the advent and the continuous sophistication of telemetry devices have revolutionized our understanding of how pelagic sharks move and exploit their three-dimensional underwater habitat, with implications for management and conservation. In this study, conventional (4,648) and electronic (18) tags were used to assess the horizontal and vertical movements of blue sharks, Prionace glauca, and their vertical overlap with shallow and deep-set longline fishing gears in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Results revealed prolonged permanence in the area, large-scale displacements, including trans-equatorial, trans-Atlantic and Indian–Atlantic movements, and high daily displacement rates. Blue sharks showed an extensive use of the water column and considerable variability among and within individuals in vertical behavior, involving normal and reverse diel vertical migrations, surface-oriented behavior, extended use of mesopelagic waters, and occasional extreme dives into bathypelagic waters. Depth distribution appeared unrelated to size or sex but was influenced by the time of day and temperature, with deeper and colder temperatures consistently found during the day. The moon cycle affected the vertical distribution of some sharks but not others. Temperature-depth recorders deployed on hooks, combined with depth distribution from electronic tags, provided insightful information on the species' vertical overlap with shallow- and deep-set longline configurations. Encounterability values were higher during nighttime and lower during daytime for both longline configurations, but were largely affected by the individuals' vertical behavior, highlighting the importance of accounting for environmental conditions besides fishing gear configuration and métiers. Small- to medium-sized shorebirds (< 200 g) can be particularly difficult to track with electronic devices due to their small size and long-distance migrations which place restrictions on device weight and size. A lack of comparative information on suitable tracking devices makes selecting the most appropriate technology time consuming and complex and can result in duplication of effort for each research project. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue by presenting a review of the scientific literature and commercially available devices to help inform device selection as well as options for attachment. The ideal device for tracking small to medium migratory shorebirds would be light weight (< 5% of a bird bodyweight), flat in profile, durable, have high battery longevity, remote data download, easy to attach from a bird welfare perspective, high spatiotemporal resolution and would be low in cost (so that a large enough sample size can be obtained). This ideal device does not yet exist due to the limitations on the weight of the power supply necessary to obtain frequent, high resolution location fixes over long time periods. As a result, the current choice of device depends on the purpose of the study. Platform Transmitter Terminal (PTT) doppler devices are suitable for tracking long distance movement due to their smaller size and lighter weight (around 2 g), but produce lower resolution location data and are expensive. For tracking smaller-scale movements (i.e., tens of kilometres), Global Positioning System (GPS) devices are more suitable, because they produce higher-resolution location data and are often more cost effective but tend to be heavier. Other device options for obtaining movement data include radio telemetry and light-level geolocators, which are generally lighter and cheaper than GPS or Doppler devices but require more effort to retrieve data and often produce lower resolution location data. Attachment methods and materials vary, but the most suitable is usually leg loop harnesses made with soft materials that are likely to degrade (e.g., elastic). Background: Acoustic telemetry is an important tool to study the movement of aquatic animals. However, studies have focussed on particular groups of easily tagged species. The development of effective tagging methods for ecologically important benthic species, such as sea stars, remains a challenge due to autotomy and their remarkable capacity to expel any foreign material. We tested three methods to surgically attach acoustic transmitters to the common sea star Asterias rubens; two methods attached the tag to the aboral side of the central body and the third attached the transmitter to the aboral side of an arm. Laboratory experiments evaluated each method in terms of survivability, tag retention, associated injuries, and changes in feeding behaviour and physical condition. Results: Laboratory results were highly variable; however, all tagging methods caused significant injury to the epidermis and deeper tissue around the attachment site over periods greater than 4 weeks. Attaching a tag by horizontally piercing the central body (method HPC) had minimal effects in the short-term (2–3 weeks) and this method was used for a pilot tagging study in the field, where 10 sea stars were tagged and placed within an existing acoustic telemetry array. Although, the interpretation of field data was challenging due to the characteristic slow movement of sea stars, movements of a similar magnitude to previous studies were identified during the 2–4 weeks after sea stars were tagged and released. However, this apparent period of tagging success was followed by a reduction in movement that, when viewed in conjunction with laboratory results, potentially indicated a deterioration in the sea stars' physical condition. Conclusions: While acoustic telemetry continues to provide novel insights into the ecology of a wide variety of marine species, species-specific effects of tagging should be evaluated before starting field studies. Males of species with promiscuous mating systems are commonly observed to use larger ranges during the mating season relative to non‐mating seasons, which is often attributed to a change in movements related to reproductive activities. However, few studies link seasonal range sizes to variation in daily space use patterns to provide insight into the behavioral mechanisms underlying mating season range expansion. We studied 20 GPS‐tagged male wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo), a large upland gamebird, during the mating and summer non‐mating seasons to test the hypothesis that larger mating season ranges resulted from male wild turkeys expanding the scale of daily movement activities to locate and court females. We delineated mating and non‐mating seasons based on intensity of gobbling, a vocalization tied to courtship behavior, recorded by autonomous recording units distributed across the study area. Mating season ranges were significantly larger than non‐mating season ranges. Daily ranges were larger in the mating season, as were distances between roost sites used on consecutive nights. Variance in daily range size was greater in the mating season, but low temporal autocorrelation suggested considerable daily variability in both seasons. We found no evidence that male wild turkeys changed how they distributed daily movements within seasonal ranges, or differences in habitat use, suggesting larger mating season ranges result from male wild turkeys increasing the scale of their daily movements, rather than a systematic shift to a nomadic movement strategy. Likely, the distribution of females is more dynamic and ephemeral compared to other resources, prompting males to traverse larger daily ranges during the mating season to locate and court females. Many organisms rely on migrations between habitats to maximize lifetime fitness, but these migrations can be risky due to a suite of factors. In anadromous salmonids, the smolt migration from fresh water to sea is a critical life stage, during which smolts can experience high mortality from multiple sources. This study investigated the migratory behavior and survival of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and anadromous brown trout (Salmo trutta) smolts during their seaward migration using acoustic telemetry between March and May 2021. Due to the extinction of wild salmon in the River Gudenaa after the construction of the Tange hydropower plant, this study used hatchery‐reared salmon originating from a nearby Danish river. A total of 75 hatchery‐reared salmon smolts, 75 hatchery‐reared trout smolts, and 75 wild trout smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters and released into River Gudenaa, Denmark. The downstream movements of tagged fish were monitored using acoustic receivers deployed in the river and fjord. Hatchery‐reared trout initiated migration first, followed by hatchery‐reared salmon, with wild trout being the last to migrate. There was no difference in riverine progression rates among the three smolt groups, but noticeable differences emerged once in the fjord: trout (wild and hatchery) slowed down, whereas hatchery‐reared salmon maintained their speed. Riverine migration was predominantly nocturnal for all smolts; however, daytime migration increased at the fjord arrays. Day‐of‐year significantly influenced diurnal patterns in the river and fjord, where daytime migration increased later in the year. Hatchery‐reared salmon and wild trout had reasonably good overall survival from river to sea entry (≥66%), whereas hatchery‐reared trout had poor survival (c.26%). The fjord was the major bottleneck for survival of hatchery‐reared trout. We found no strong evidence for differences in progression rate or diurnal patterns between wild and hatchery‐reared trout to explain the lower survival. This study demonstrates that salmon and trout differ in their life‐history strategy already in the post‐smolt phase, and that stocking is a sub‐optimal strategy to aid wild populations. Predation and habitat deterioration are the main reasons for the strong decline of ground‐nesting farmland birds such as the grey partridge Perdix perdix in Europe. Grey partridge nests and incubating females are especially vulnerable to predation. We have previously demonstrated that predator activity is much lower inside flower blocks (agri‐environment schemes sown with a flower seed mix) than at their edges and that predator activity in flower blocks depends on the surrounding landscape. Here, we investigate whether these differences in predator activity translate into differences in grey partridge nest predation and assess predation patterns relative to landscape and nest site characteristics. We recorded the success of 56 nests of radio‐tagged grey partridges between 2009 and 2017 in an agricultural landscape in Central Germany. We used Bayesian logistic regression to analyse the effects of nest site and landscape characteristics on nest predation on a subset of 46 nests (21 nests successful, 25 predated). Distance to the edge of the nesting habitat was the most important predictor, reducing predation probability from 66.8% at the edge to 18.5% at 85.5 m. Predation probability decreased with increasing length of habitat borders, habitat diversity and the area of permanent grasslands and fallows. Predation probability was higher further from settlements and increased with increasing woodland area in the agricultural matrix. When considering linear landscape structures, nest predation patterns matched the patterns of predator activity from our previous studies. Results suggest that the distance to the edge of the nesting habitat is most important and that nest predation may be reduced by providing sufficiently broad nesting habitats. Nest predation may further be minimized by increasing habitat diversity and coverage of extensive vegetation types and by establishing conservation measures for grey partridges further away from woodlands. Males of species with promiscuous mating systems are commonly observed to use larger ranges during the mating season relative to non‐mating seasons, which is often attributed to a change in movements related to reproductive activities. However, few studies link seasonal range sizes to variation in daily space use patterns to provide insight into the behavioral mechanisms underlying mating season range expansion. We studied 20 GPS‐tagged male wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo), a large upland gamebird, during the mating and summer non‐mating seasons to test the hypothesis that larger mating season ranges resulted from male wild turkeys expanding the scale of daily movement activities to locate and court females. We delineated mating and non‐mating seasons based on intensity of gobbling, a vocalization tied to courtship behavior, recorded by autonomous recording units distributed across the study area. Mating season ranges were significantly larger than non‐mating season ranges. Daily ranges were larger in the mating season, as were distances between roost sites used on consecutive nights. Variance in daily range size was greater in the mating season, but low temporal autocorrelation suggested considerable daily variability in both seasons. We found no evidence that male wild turkeys changed how they distributed daily movements within seasonal ranges, or differences in habitat use, suggesting larger mating season ranges result from male wild turkeys increasing the scale of their daily movements, rather than a systematic shift to a nomadic movement strategy. Likely, the distribution of females is more dynamic and ephemeral compared to other resources, prompting males to traverse larger daily ranges during the mating season to locate and court females. We developed a low-cost methane sensing node incorporating two metal oxide (MOx) sensors (Figaro Engineering TGS2611-E00 and TGS2600), humidity and temperature sensing, data storage, and telemetry. We deployed the prototype sensor alongside a reference methane analyzer at two sites: one outdoors and one indoors. We collected data at each site for several months across a range of environmental conditions (particularly temperature and humidity) and methane levels. We explored calibration models to investigate the performance of our system and its suitability for methane background monitoring and enhancement detection, first selecting a linear regression to fit a sensor baseline response and then fitting methane response by the sensor deviation from baseline. We achieved moderate accuracy in a 2 to 10 ppm methane range compared to data from the reference analyzer (RMSE < 0.6 ppm), but we found that the sensor response varied over time, possibly as a result of changes in non-targeted gas concentrations. We suggest that this cross sensitivity may be responsible for mixed results in previous studies. We discuss the implications of our results for the use of these and similar inexpensive MOx sensors for methane monitoring in the 2 to 10 ppm range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Cochlear implant (CI) activation usually takes place at ∼ 30 days postoperative (PO). In our service, CI surgery is performed with local anesthesia and sedation, so activation is possible with the patient's cooperation, immediately after the CI surgery, still in the operating room (OR). Objective The objective of the present study was to provide the patient with hearing experience with the CI and to assess auditory perception immediately after surgery while still in the OR, as well as to compare impedance telemetry (IT), neural response telemetry (NRT), and comfort (C) level at two moments: in the OR and at the definitive activation, ∼ 30 days PO. Methods Nine adult patients (12 ears) with acquired (postlingual) deafness were included. Auditory perception was evaluated through the Ling Six Sound Check, musical instruments, and clapping, presented in two different programming maps, elaborated using t-NRT, and comparing IT, NRT, and C level between the two moments. Results We observed that while still in the OR, the patient can already present auditory detection and recognition responses. The values of IT, NRT threshold (t-NRT), and C on both dates differed, with statistical significance. Conclusion We concluded that it is possible to provide the patient with an auditory experience with the CI immediately after surgery, and that the auditory experience and the values of electrode IT, NRT, and C vary significantly between the two moments. Drilling data communication mainly includes mud pulse telemetry and electromagnetic wave telemetry. These methods have the advantages of economy and convenience, but they also have the disadvantages of low data transmission rate and large signal attenuation. A data transmission system while drilling was designed based on the key technologies and basic principles of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM). The hardware of the system includes the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) motherboard and daughter board, power amplifier circuit and piezoelectric transducer. The software used in the system is C and Python. Compared with traditional methods, new methods using acoustic signals have many advantages. This new wireless transmission system was designed by combining down-hole data transmission with wireless communication. This method has advantages in oil exploration and development. Many Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations have experienced significant declines for decades throughout North America and Europe. Mortality due to marine mammal predation during their early marine life could be an important factor contributing to these declines and limiting their population recoveries. However, quantifying predation events, and particularly the extent of marine mammal predation on Atlantic salmon, remains a challenge. In this study, we estimated the contribution of mesothermic and endothermic species predation to the mortality of Atlantic salmon post-smolts during their early marine life using acoustic telemetry. Predation events were inferred from changes in temperatures and depths experienced by acoustically tagged hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon smolts. No salmon were consumed by mesothermic predators, with most endothermic predation events being classified as marine mammals. Post-smolt mortality during the study period was low overall in both years (13.1%–16.7%), with endothermic predation accounting for 33.1%–42.9% of all marine mortality events (5.2%–5.6% mortality). Our results suggest that the current low return of adult Atlantic salmon observed in this area in recent years was not heavily influenced by endothermic predation on post-smolts in the first weeks at sea. Fish that undertake juvenile migration pass through habitats that vary in mortality risk. The ability to identify regions of persistently low survival would improve fishery management. We conducted a field study combined with predictive modeling of survival in downstream migrating juvenile sea lamprey using a new micro-acoustic telemetry tag designed for implantation into small, slender-bodied fishes. Detection data were collected from eight receivers placed across a coastal riverine–wetland–lake complex. Juvenile sea lamprey initiated downstream movement near nautical twilight, stopped frequently, and were more likely to move during high river discharge. Estimated survival was highest in the riverine reach, declined through the river–wetland complex, and dropped precipitously in the drowned rivermouth lake. However, the high transmission rate and resulting short battery life of the microtransmitters (as configured) likely resulted in missed detections in the lower reaches. Simulation analyses suggested survival estimation could be improved by increasing the number of tagged lamprey and staggering release locations. In the premigration period, weather plays a role in the ability of animals to accumulate energy stores before the onset of migration, affecting survival. In the context of rapidly changing climate, our goal was to study the effect of short-term weather conditions on the Common Crane (Grus grus) movement in the premigration period. We analyzed the daily distances and the maximum displacements using GPS telemetry data. We studied the relationship between weather conditions (average daily temperature, daily precipitation, and wind speed), age, the presence of offspring, and crane daily movements. The study was conducted at premigration staging areas in the European part of Russia. We found no differences in daily movement distance between adults with and without chicks and subadult individuals. A positive relationship between daily distances and maximum displacements and wind speed, and a negative relationship with average daily temperature and precipitation was observed. Like terrestrial animals, wild fish exhibit individual differences in daily activity patterns, known as chronotypes. However, monitoring free-living fish has posed challenges in studying chronotypes and their plasticity in response to the environment. To address this issue, we utilized high-throughput telemetry to measure daily activity in a large group of free-living pearly razorfish, Xyrichtys novacula , while also monitoring fine-scale environmental variables. Using hidden Markov models for behavioural segmentation, we quantified four circadian-related traits (awakening time, rest onset, activity duration relative to the daytime and rest midpoint relative to middle of the night) during two biological contexts (prespawning and spawning). We then used linear mixed-effects models to decompose the variation of these traits into individual, ecological (contextual environment) and population components. Our findings revealed the presence of chronotypes in both sexes, with greater between-individual variation in behaviour during spawning. Males exhibited longer activity duration due to an earlier awakening time than females, and temperature, waves and light significantly influenced daily activity behaviours. However, there was considerable individual variation in response to environmental changes, indicating the emergence of behavioural reaction norms (i.e. plasticity), with females showing greater plasticity in rest onset and relative rest midpoint. Our study also identified significant correlations among traits, suggesting that the activity duration continuum defines the pearly razorfish chronotype. Overall, our work represents the most comprehensive description of individual and ecological contextual variation in chronotypes within a wild marine fish population. There is limited knowledge of how philopatry influences the spatial ecology of iteroparous anadromous species during their spawning migrations, but this knowledge is important in understanding population responses to interventions such as river reconnection. Here, acoustic telemetry was applied to twaite shad Alosa fallax and hybrids (n = 184) during their freshwater spawning migration, enabling quantification of philopatry across spawning migrations and assessment of the factors affecting space use. Tagged fish moved a median of 7 km day−1. Their migration routes were tortuous (median ratio of total distance moved/upstream extent = 2.8), and included multiple upstream/downstream direction changes (median = 27) over a median freshwater movement distance of 247 km. Females occupied larger core areas than males, but previous spawning experience, body length, tagging status, and introgression with A. alosa did not predict core area size. Seventy-one fish returned a year after tagging, with a median freshwater residency of 33 days. Between years, intra-individual similarity in space use was significantly greater than inter-individual similarity, providing strong evidence of philopatry. These results provide insights into how spawning philopatry and phenotype influence riverine space use in a threatened anadromous species, and have implications for river reconnection efforts. Acoustic tags fitted with predation sensors, which trigger following ingestion by piscivorous predators, were used to compare direct predation rates during downstream migration (out‐migration) of potamodromous (freshwater) brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) parr from their natal river into a large freshwater lake system during spring and autumn. Thirty‐eight spring migrants were tagged across two study years (2021 and 2022) of which 13 individuals (34%) were predated. By contrast 40 autumn migrants were tagged (2020 and 2021) of which three individuals (7.5%) experienced predation. The overall predation loss rate for spring migrants was 0.342% day−1 and was 0.075% day−1 for autumn migrants. Most predation events during spring (77%) occurred within the lower river before tagged fish entered the lake, whilst no predation events were recorded within the river in the autumn. Predation events were significantly linked to tagging season (spring or autumn), with the probability of tags remaining untriggered (as a proxy for survival) being higher 93% (95% confidence interval [CI] [87%, 100%]) in autumn than in spring 66% (95% CI [53%, 83%]). The spring migration periods showed significantly lower river discharge (0.321 m3/s mean daily discharge, April 1 to May 31) to those measured during autumn (1.056 m3/s mean daily discharge, October 1 to November 30) (Mann–Whitney U‐test, U = 1149, p < 0.001). The European bison (Bison bonasus L.) is a species that has been successfully reintroduced in several European countries and requires ongoing monitoring to protect and restore its biodiversity. This study examines the population dynamics of free-ranging European bison in the Vânători Neam? Natural Park in Romania, taking into account various local biotic and abiotic factors. Data collected from the collars of several European bison from 2014 to 2019, as well as vector maps of the study area, was used for the analysis. Furthermore, the study identifies the influence of slope and altitude on the distribution patterns of the European bison throughout the seasons. While a confluence of biotic and abiotic factors shapes exploration behavior, the study underscores that food supply and land use exert the most pronounced impact on the sustainability and growth of the European bison population. Despite an exhaustive analysis of correlations between various biotic and abiotic factors with recorded temperatures, no significant results reflecting discernible trends or linkages induced by temperature were obtained. The analysis of GPS collar data revealed that, in the research area, the European bison inhabited areas with forest vegetation for about 74% of their time and places without it for 26%. Over 80% of the localization patterns were found in wooded areas, with fewer than 20% found in non-forest areas, year after year. The age class distribution research shows that the European bisons have a significant preference (more than 55%) for old-growth forests that are older than 100 years. This preference is present in all seasons except winter, when the preference for these types of forests decreases. On the other hand, forests that are younger and less than 60 years old are preferred in the summer and spring, which offers important information on the diverse habitat preferences of the European bison population. Changes in lighting accompany modern urbanization trends and can lead to various pathologies based on circadian disturbances. In this study, we assessed the changes in the circadian rhythm of core body temperature (Tcore) and locomotor activity of Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) following exposure to different lighting conditions: extended light phase of the day (16 h–8 h, 20 h–4 h, 24 h–0 h), light pollution, monochromatic light, and bright light therapy. The telemetry data was collected after experimental lighting conditions during periods with standard lighting (12 h of light and 12 h of darkness) and was processed using linear and cosinor analysis. The daily rhythms of rats' parameters persisted in accordance with the standard lighting regime. Tcore changes were observed in both groups compared to the initial period: in WKY, a decrease in Tcore during the darkness and an increase during the light; in SHR, the opposite trend, with Tcore increased during the darkness and decreased during the light phase of the day. A relationship between Tcore and activity was observed with weak correlation. WKY exhibited more pronounced signs of adaptive variation and desynchronization compared to SHR, which could be associated with a wider range of functional capabilities of the organism without cardiovascular pathology. The success of translocation as a management tool is based on reversing the factors that led to a population becoming threatened or locally extinct. We assessed whether translocating a jaguar Panthera onca into the surroundings of a protected area in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest with a resident jaguar population was effective. We captured a male jaguar in an urban area where there were no substantiated previous records of jaguars. In the capture area only one predation event had been recorded, when the jaguar killed several chickens a few days before capture. After capture we translocated the jaguar to a forested area 240 km from the capture site, adjacent to the Rio Doce State Park. To investigate whether the potential geographical origin of the individual was any nearby fragment of the Atlantic Forest or nearby fragments of the Cerrado ecoregion, we genotyped it for 12 microsatellite loci and compared the results to a database developed previously. We fitted the jaguar with a GPS/VHF collar from which we recovered 2.5 months of data. Post-release monitoring with camera traps indicated the jaguar established residence within the region of the Park and we recorded no events of predation on livestock. The genetic analysis indicated that the jaguar resembled individuals from the Inner Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Amazon. Translocation was an important tool for avoiding potentially negative interactions between the jaguar and local people, and may have benefitted the jaguar population at the release site. Reversing the negative impacts that anthropogenic habitat fragmentation has on animal movement is a key goal in the management of landscapes and conservation of species globally. Accurate assessment of measures to remediate habitat fragmentation, such as fish passage solutions in rivers, are imperative but are particularly challenging for territorial species, which are less likely to leave their existing home range, or populations composed of both migratory and resident individuals (i.e., partial migration). This investigation quantified the movements of translocated (captured upstream of the impediment and released downstream) and non‐translocated (captured and released downstream of the impediment) riverine brown trout (Salmo trutta L.), a species known to perform a homing movement, through a fish pass using passive integrated transponder (PIT) telemetry. A significantly higher proportion of translocated fish approached, entered, and passed (on a wider range of flows) compared to non‐translocated fish, consistent with the theory that motivation is a key driver in fish pass use. Translocated fish that entered the pass were significantly larger than those that approached but did not enter, presumably due to physiological capability. Translocated fish were a more reliable indicator of the fish passage solution effectiveness than non‐translocated fish. Our findings hence imply that many fish passage solutions globally, and potentially measures to remediate habitat fragmentation for other taxa, may have been mistakenly assessed for unmotivated animals. The escalating advancement in Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) necessitates a formidable strategy for firmware updates, where traditional methods often fall short of guaranteeing absolute integrity. Although decentralization has been explored in studies for firmware integrity verification using blockchain technology, it lacks comprehensive validation in the context of automotive over-the-air (OTA) updates. By recognizing the limitations of current practices and the partial validation of decentralized approaches, such as blockchain, in the automotive sector, our study introduces a novel mechanism for firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates. This mechanism is grounded in the widely adopted message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol, integral to the Internet of Things (IoT) domain, and leverages Merkle tree-based blockchain verification to fortify the fidelity and efficiency of firmware updates. Our proposed solution not only prioritizes the stability crucial to automotive OTA updates but also ensures that performance is not compromised. The role of erythropoietin (EPO) has extended beyond hematopoiesis to include cytoprotection, inotropy, and neurogenesis. Extra-renal EPO has been reported for multiple tissue/cell types, but the physiological relevance remains unknown. Although the EPO receptor is expressed by multiple cardiac cell types and human recombinant EPO increases contractility and confers cytoprotection against injury, whether the heart produces physiologically meaningful amounts of EPO in vivo is unclear. We show a distinct circadian rhythm of cardiac EPO mRNA expression in adult mice and increased mRNA expression during embryogenesis, suggesting physiological relevance to cardiac EPO production throughout life. We then generated constitutive, cardiomyocyte-specific EPO knockout mice driven by the Mlc2v promoter (EPOfl/fl:Mlc2v-cre+/−; EPOΔ/Δ-CM). During cardiogenesis, cardiac EPO mRNA expression and cellular proliferation were reduced in EPOΔ/Δ-CM hearts. However, in adult EPOΔ/Δ- CM mice, total heart weight was preserved through increased cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area, indicating the reduced cellular proliferation was compensated for by cellular hypertrophy. Echocardiography revealed no changes in cardiac dimensions, with modest reductions in ejection fraction, stroke volume, and tachycardia, whereas invasive hemodynamics showed increased cardiac contractility and lusitropy. Paradoxically, EPO mRNA expression in the heart was elevated in adult EPOΔ/Δ-CM, along with increased serum EPO protein content and hematocrit. Using RNA fluorescent in situ hybridization, we found that Epo RNA colocalized with endothelial cells in the hearts of adult EPOΔ/Δ-CM mice, identifying the endothelial cells as a cell responsible for the EPO hyper-expression. Collectively, these data identify the first physiological roles for cardiomyocyte-derived EPO. We have established cardiac EPO mRNA expression is a complex interplay of multiple cell types, where loss of embryonic cardiomyocyte EPO production results in hyper-expression from other cells within the adult heart. We investigated movement dynamics and habitat selection of Suwannee bass (Micropterus notius) in one of few river systems known to house this endemic species of the Southeastern United States. The home range of Suwannee bass ranged from a minimum of 0.15 ha to 142.97 ha (mean = 30.61 ± 7.11 ha). Thirty-four percent of tagged individuals made substantial movements in relatively short amounts of time, with the maximum distance recorded at 28.53 km. Movement from these fish were erratic and unrelated to sex, length, weight, or time of year. The remaining 66% of tagged fish moved little across the study period. Suwannee bass exhibited positive selection preferences for limestone and boulder substrates and a negative selection preference for sandy substrate, indicating that coarse substrates likely play a key role in the life history of the species. The observed variability in movement, the potential for long-distance movements to influence population dynamics, and preference for coarse habitat are important attributes that should be considered for future conservation or management efforts. The design and experimental verification of a deeply implanted conformal printed antenna is presented. The hip implant acts as the ground plane for a coaxial-cable-fed trapezoidal radiator designed to transmit biological signals collected within the body by proper biosensors. The arrangement, consisting of a metallic (or equivalent) hip implant, bio-compatible gypsum-based dielectric, and conformal radiator, was tested when the hosting 3D-printed plastic bone was immersed in tissue-like liquid contained in a plastic bucket. The dimensions of the set-up are similar to a human leg. Matching and radiation characteristics are presented in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) frequency band (2.4–2.5 GHz), showing the feasibility of the proposed arrangement. We describe efforts to reintroduce the extinct-in-the-wild Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii) within its historical range in eastern Brazil. Twenty captive-reared Spix's Macaws were released, along with 15 Blue-Winged Macaws (Primolius maracana), as heterospecific flocks in two events during the dry and rainy seasons of 2022. We monitored the release groups through daily observation and telemetry tracking from early June 2022 to early June 2023. We documented an overall first-year survival of 58.3% (CI: 37.8–78.7%), with 65% of Spix's Macaws establishing a stable area of activity within 5 km of the release site, excluding any temporary long-distance forays. Eighty-five percent of released Spix's Macaws exhibited flock cohesion, including interactions with and integration into wild Blue-Winged Macaw groups at the release site. Several released Spix's Macaws formed pair-bonds with conspecifics and engaged in nest cavity exploration, breeding behavior, and territorial defense of nest sites, with three females also laying and incubating eggs. One nesting pair successfully hatched and reared chicks in an artificial nest cavity. These releases employed a novel reintroduction strategy using a surrogate species model, the sympatric Blue-Winged Macaw, to "mentor" and facilitate post-release adaptation by the target species and increase the total number of individuals in the release cohort. Lastly, participatory monitoring by local citizens is considered a way to engage and involve local communities in species and habitat conservation and potentially create new employment opportunities in the region. Combine harvesters (CHs) use large amounts of diesel fuel and they contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollutants. A reduction in fuel consumption of agricultural machines has immediate economic benefits but can also results in longer term environmental benefits. Savickas et al. This paper follows on from that research and discusses the need for an IT tool for the management of economic and environmental indicators of a CH. The innovative tool allows the comparison of the data of specific agricultural machines with the multi-year telematics data stored in the database. It offers opportunities to reduce environmental impact and evaluate the results of field trials, presenting them in terms of environmental impact, expressed as CO2 equivalents. This article presents the dual approach method that includes a detailed analysis of telematics data and field trials to identify the potential sustainable use of CHs. This article shows field studies aimed at determining the exhaust gas composition and the effect of fuel consumption on global warming potential (GWP), when harvesting different cereals. It was determined that the feed rate to the CH and the engine load significantly impacted the share of GWP per ton of harvested crop. The results confirmed the benefits of maximum engine load (within the permissible limits of grain losses) in an economic and environmental context. During the tests, the maximum engine load ranged from 67.7 to 97.7%. Analysis of the telematics database of 215 CHs working in Lithuania and Latvia for 6 years showed that the average fuel consumption rate during harvesting, the total amount of fuel used and the impact on GWP were 56.7 ± 0.9 l h−1, 10 481.1 ± 396.2 l year−1, and 27 920.3 ± 1019.8 kg year−1, respectively. Snow modelling is often hampered by the availability of input and calibration data, which can affect the choice of models, their complexity, and transferability. To address the trade-off between model parsimony and transferability, we present the Generalizable Empirical Model of Snow Accumulation and Melt (GEMS), a machine-learning-based model, which requires only daily precipitation, temperature or its daily diurnal cycle, and basic topographic features to simulate snow water equivalent (SWE). The model embeds a support vector regression pretrained on a large dataset of daily observations from a diverse set of the SNOwpack TELemetry Network (SNOTEL) stations in the United States. GEMS does not require any user calibration, except for the option to adjust the temperature threshold for rain–snow partitioning, though the model achieves robust simulation results with the default value. We validated the model with long-term daily observations from numerous independent SNOTEL stations not included in the training and with data from reference stations of the Earth System Model–Snow Model Intercomparison Project. We demonstrate how the model advances large-scale SWE modelling in regions with complex terrain that lack in situ snow mass observations for calibration, such as the Pamir and Andes mountains, by assessing the model's ability to reproduce daily snow cover dynamics. Future model improvements should consider the effects of vegetation, improve simulation accuracy for shallow snow in warm locations at lower elevations, and possibly address wind-induced snow redistribution. Overall, GEMS provides a new approach for snow modelling that can be useful for hydroclimatic research and operational monitoring in regions where in situ snow observations are scarce. Background: The use of biologging tags to answer questions in animal movement ecology has increased in recent decades. Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) are often used for migratory studies on large fish taxa. For PSATs, movements are normally reconstructed from variable amounts of transmitted data (unless tags are recovered, and full data archives accessed) by coupling geolocation methods with a state-space modelling (SSM) approach. Between 2018 and 2019, we deployed Wildlife Computers PSATs (MiniPATs) from which data recovery varied considerably. This led us to examine the effect of PSAT data volume on SSM performance (i.e., variation in reconstructed locations and their uncertainty). We did this by comparing movements reconstructed using partial (< 100%) and complete (100%) geolocation data sets from PSATs and investigated the variation in Global Position Estimator 3 (GPE3; Wildlife Computers' proprietary light-based geolocation SSM) reconstructed locations and their certainty in relation to data volume and movement type (maximum dispersal distance). Results: In this analysis, PSATs (n = 29) deployed on Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnusthynnus) transmitted data after detaching from study animals for between 0.3 and 10.8 days (mean 4.2 ± 3 days), yielding between 2 and 82% (mean 27% ± 22%) of total geolocation data. The volume of geolocation data received was positively related to the amount of time a tag transmitted for and showed a weak negative relationship to the length of the tag deployment. For 12 recovered PSATs (i.e., 100% of geolocation data; mean ± 1 S.D. = 301 ± 90 days of data per fish), (i) if ABT travelled short-distances (< 1000 km), movements reconstructed from partial data sets were more similar to their complete data set counterpart than fish that travelled over longer distances (> 1000 km); (ii) for fish that travelled long distances, mean distance of locations from corresponding complete data set locations were inversely correlated with the volume of data received; (iii) if only 5% of data was used for geolocation, reconstructed locations for long-distance fish differed by 2213 ± 647 km from the locations derived from complete data sets; and, (iv) track reconstructions omitted migrations into the Mediterranean Sea if less than 30% of data was used for geolocation. Conclusions: For Wildlife Computers MiniPATs in our specific application, movements reconstructed with as little as 30% of the total geolocation data results in plausible outputs from the GPE3. Below this data volume, however, significant differences of more than 2000 km can occur. Whilst for a single species and manufacturer, this highlights the importance of careful study planning and the value of conducting study-specific sensitivity analysis prior to inclusion of modelled locations in research outputs. Based on our findings, we suggest general steps and refinements to maximise the value of light geolocation data from PSATs deployed on aquatic animals and highlight the importance of conducting data sensitivity analyses. We developed a low-cost methane sensing node incorporating two metal oxide (MOx) sensors, humidity and 10 temperature sensing, data storage, and telemetry. We deployed the prototype sensor alongside a reference methane analyzer in two sites - one outdoors, one indoors - for several months each of data collection across a range of environmental conditions and methane levels. We explored calibration models to investigate the performance of our system and its suitability for background monitoring and enhancement detection. We achieved moderate performance in the 2 to 10 ppm range, but found that the sensor response varied over time, possibly as the result of changes in non-targeted gas concentrations. We suggest that this cross sensitivity may be responsible for mixed results in previous similar studies. We discuss the implications of our results for the use of these and similar inexpensive MOx sensors for near-background methane monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Internet of Things (IoT) is spreading rapidly around the world, and Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is one of the main protocols used to explore device-to-device (D2D) communication. The industry typically requires communication systems that can transmit data continuously while optimizing both bandwidth and transmission time. Due to the vast amount of data that can be lost, companies often find that even short periods of network downtime lead to significant costs. In this paper, we propose a retransmission mechanism to allow sensor nodes to relay missing data via MQTT to a local server when it reconnects after an unexpected disconnection. To assess its performance, several tests in a digital healthcare use case scenario have been designed. Since the procedure involves transferring a considerable amount of data, our main goal is to determine the maximum payload of each message to restore the missing information, while minimizing the retransmission time without information loss. This article discusses the challenges faced by the food sector, such as overexploitation of resources, climate change, and pollution, which have led to poverty and hunger in many parts of the world. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call for responsible production and consumption, as well as zero hunger, to be achieved within 15 years. One solution to achieve these goals is aquaponics, a system that integrates aquaculture and hydroponics, which has several advantages such as pesticide-free products, efficient use of water, decreased pollution and eutrophication, and higher vegetable production per m2. The article focuses on the dynamics of nutrients in the aquaponic system, specifically how nutrients are consumed, metabolized, and released into the system, and how they are processed by bacteria and assimilated by plants. The article also discusses how technological solutions such as telemetry and the Internet of Things (IoT) can be used to improve the efficiency of aquaponic systems. Cochlear implantation has become a standard of care for a child diagnosed with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss with a structured surgical standard operating procedure. A 3-year-old boy with bilateral profound prelingual sensorineural deafness underwent a Med-EL Sonata Ti100 implant. We faced a peculiar situation intraoperatively after inserting the electrodes and closing the wound. The impedance recording indicated high ground path impedance with short-circuiting of few electrodes. As a bionic implant, its electronic components may at times malfunction both intraoperatively and/or postoperatively; therefore, neural response telemetry (NRT) was invented to check it. By using NRT and a few milliliters of normal saline, we were able to diagnose as well as rectify the malfunctioning of the implant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecosystem functions and services are severely threatened by unprecedented global loss in biodiversity. To counteract these trends, it is essential to develop systems to monitor changes in biodiversity for planning, evaluating, and implementing conservation and mitigation actions. However, the implementation of monitoring systems suffers from a trade‐off between grain (i.e., the level of detail), extent (i.e., the number of study sites), and temporal repetition. Here, we present an applied and realized networked sensor system for integrated biodiversity monitoring in the Nature 4.0 project as a solution to these challenges, which considers plants and animals not only as targets of investigation, but also as parts of the modular sensor network by carrying sensors. Our networked sensor system consists of three main closely interlinked components with a modular structure: sensors, data transmission, and data storage, which are integrated into pipelines for automated biodiversity monitoring. We present our own real‐world examples of applications, share our experiences in operating them, and provide our collected open data. Our flexible, low‐cost, and open‐source solutions can be applied for monitoring individual and multiple terrestrial plants and animals as well as their interactions. Ultimately, our system can also be applied to area‐wide ecosystem mapping tasks, thereby providing an exemplary cost‐efficient and powerful solution for biodiversity monitoring. Building upon our experiences in the Nature 4.0 project, we identified ten key challenges that need to be addressed to better understand and counteract the ongoing loss of biodiversity using networked sensor systems. To tackle these challenges, interdisciplinary collaboration, additional research, and practical solutions are necessary to enhance the capability and applicability of networked sensor systems for researchers and practitioners, ultimately further helping to ensure the sustainable management of ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services. The freshwater phase of the first seaward migration of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is relatively well understood when compared with our understanding of the marine phase of their migration. In 2021, 1008 wild and 60 ranched Atlantic salmon smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters in 12 rivers in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Large marine receiver arrays were deployed in the Irish Sea at two locations: at the transition of the Irish Sea into the North Atlantic between Ireland and Scotland, and between southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, to examine the early phase of the marine migration of Atlantic salmon smolts. After leaving their natal rivers' post‐smolt migration through the Irish Sea was rapid with minimum speeds ranging from 14.03 to 38.56 km.day−1 for Atlantic salmon smolts that entered the Irish Sea directly from their natal river, to 9.69–39.94 km.day−1 for Atlantic salmon smolts that entered the Irish Sea directly from their natal estuary. Population minimum migration success through the study area was strongly correlated with the distance of travel, populations further away from the point of entry to the open North Atlantic exhibited lower migration success. Post‐smolts from different populations experienced different water temperatures on entering the North Atlantic. This was largely driven by the timing of their migration and may have significant consequences for feeding and ultimately survivorship. The influence of water currents on post‐smolt movement was investigated using data from previously constructed numerical hydrodynamic models. Modeled water current data in the northern Irish Sea showed that post‐smolts had a strong preference for migrating when the current direction was at around 283° (west‐north‐west) but did not migrate when exposed to strong currents in other directions. This is the most favorable direction for onward passage from the Irish Sea to the continental shelf edge current, a known accumulation point for migrating post‐smolts. These results strongly indicate that post‐smolts migrating through the coastal marine environment are: (1) not simply migrating by current following (2) engage in active directional swimming (3) have an intrinsic sense of their migration direction and (4) can use cues other than water current direction to orientate during this part of their migration. The ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii Smuts 1832) is vulnerable to extinction due to poaching and trafficking. Recovery of pangolins from the trade and subsequent rehabilitation and release form a core component of pangolin conservation. Post-release monitoring of rehabilitated pangolins through the attachment of very high frequency (VHF) transmitters and satellite devices is carried out to determine the efficacy of release protocols. We report on 14 confirmed and 19 potential incidents of device removal by predators during non-fatal attacks, which occurred over a 6 year period. During this time, 78 devices were deployed 109 times attached to 36 rehabilitated pangolins. These incidents should be considered during the design of future post-release monitoring protocols. Increased body weight (BW) induces inappropriate renin–angiotensin system (RAS) activation. The activation of the intrarenal RAS is associated with increased urinary angiotensinogen (uAGT), blood pressure (BP), and kidney damage. Here, we examined uAGT excretion levels in young non-diabetic human subjects with overweight (OW) and non-diabetic mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced OW. Human subjects (women and men; 20–28 years old) included two groups: (a) overweight (OW, n = 17, BMI ≥ 25); and (b) controls (normal weight (NW; n = 26, BMI ≤ 25). In these subjects, we measured BP, albuminuria, and protein levels of uAGT by ELISA adjusted by urinary creatinine (expressed by uAGT/uCrea). Mice (female and male C57BL/6J mice, 8 ± 2 weeks of age) also included two groups: HFD or normal fat diet (NFD) fed for 8 weeks. We measured BW, fasting blood glucose (FBG), BP by telemetry, albuminuria, and uAGT by ELISA. In humans: (i) no significant changes were observed in BP, albuminuria, and FBG when comparing NW and OW subjects; (ii) multivariate logistic regression analysis of independent predictors related to uAGT/uCrea levels demonstrated a strong association between uAGT and overweight; (iii) urinary reactive oxygen species (ROS) were augmented in men and women with OW; (iv) the uAGT/uCrea ratio was higher in men with OW. However, the uAGT/uCrea values were lower in women even with OW. In mice: (i) males fed an HFD for 8 weeks became OW while females did not; (ii) no changes were observed either in FBG, BP, or albuminuria; (iii) kidney ROS were augmented in OW male mice after 28 weeks but not in females; (iv) OW male mice showed augmented excretion of uAGT but this was undetectable in females fed either NFD or HFD. In humans and mice who are OW, the urinary excretion of AGT differs between males and females and overcomes overt albuminuria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fish movement patterns are an essential consideration for the design of effective freshwater protected areas. The Rideau waterway system (Ontario, Canada) is home to some of the oldest single-resource freshwater protected areas (FPAs) in Ontario (> 70 years active). Initially, these FPAs were intended to provide holistic protection to the heavily exploited largemouth bass, but since their establishment, little is known regarding their protective capacity. Using a passive acoustic telemetry network, we measured how site fidelity varied with body size and across seasons in largemouth bass within one Rideau waterway FPA. Collectively, 50 bass were tracked for an average of 227 days, with some individuals tracked upwards of 744 days. Tagged fish spent on average 55% of their time at liberty within the FPA, with occupancy rates exceeding 85% for some individuals. Most of the tagged fish displayed cyclical movement behaviour between the FPA and non-protected areas, largely corresponding with known life-history stages. Largemouth bass occupancy was highest in the spring–summer seasons (i.e. reproductive period), with a sharp decline during the autumn that sustained through the winter. FPA occupancy varied with body size, with large fish (> 430 mm) using the FPA more extensively. Our findings show that this Rideau waterway FPA provides temporal protection from exploitation to a highly targeted sportfish, especially during their reproductive period, likely providing major conservation benefits.
