The study was carried out to verify if there are differences in foraging frequency and behavior of Apis mellifera in two melon hybrids (10:00 – ‘Yellow melon’ and Sancho -‘Piel de Sapo’) in the municipality of Juazeiro, state of Bahia, Brazil. Arrojadoa rhodantha is a widely distributed species in the Caatinga. Due to deforestation, however, their populations have suffered considerable reduction both in terms of distribution and abundance. We study the reproductive phenology, floral biology and pollination mechanism of A. rhodantha to provide information about the pollination ecology of this species. The study was conducted between August 2010 and July 2011, in a caatinga area, municipality of Petrolina, Permanbuco State, Brazil, with 15 individuals of A. rhodantha and a sampling effort of 35 h observing floral visitors. Stages of flowering and fruiting occurred throughout the year, with greater production of flowers and fruits in the rainy season. The flowers are magenta, opening at around 4:00 a.m. and closing at 11:00 p.m. They were visited by hummingbirds (3 species), bees (3), flies (1) and butterflies (1). Trigona spinipes, Friseomelitta doederleini and a Halictidae were the most common floral visitors (93.16% of total visits). The hummingbirds are considered potential pollinators of this cactus, but accounted for only 6.18% of total visits, and Eupetomena macroura was the most frequent species. Bees, flies and the butterflies Phoebis philea were classified as nectar/pollen thieves or pollen robbers. Arrojadoa rhodantha produced fruits only in natural conditions (55%) and by xenogamy (35.3%). Because of the continuous flowering and fruiting, this species can be considered as an important source of food for the fauna from the Caatinga, where there is seasonality in the availability of food sources.

Ipomoea longistaminea se destaca entre as espécies do gênero por ser considerada como endêmica da Caatinga e de distribuição restrita nos Estados de Pernambuco e da Bahia. Neste trabalho, foi estudada a biologia da e produtiva e os visitantes florais dessa espécie em área de Caatinga, na Fazenda São Luiz, em Juazeiro-BA. As atividades foram desenvolvidas nos anos de 2009 a 2012, no período de maio a agosto, entre 05h00 e 18h00, com 20 indivíduos de I. longistaminea. Para o estudo da biologia floral, flores foram marcadas e acompanhadas, sendo anotadas a antese e os visitantes florais. Experimentos de polinização foram feitos para determinar a estratégia reprodutiva. Ipomoea longistaminea é uma liana anual, como floração observada de maio a julho, caracterizada como do tipo cornucópia. As inflorescências são do tipo cimeira apresentando, em média, 10,6 ± 2,88 botões. As flores são infundibuliformes, com corola de cor vermelha e comprimento médio de 40,9 ± 3,68mm. O androceu é composto por cinco estames que, juntamente com estilete e estigma, fica exposto fora da corola. A antese é diurna, ocorrendo por volta das 05h00 e, nesta fase, o estigma está receptivo, o pólen está viável (93,4%) e disponível e o néctar é produzido em pequena quantidade (7,1 ± 2,1μL). Por volta das 15h00, as flores encontram-se com as pétalas desidratadas, fechando a fauce da corola. Ao longo da floração, foram registradas visitas de cinco espécies de beija-flores e três espécies de abelhas. Ipomoea longistaminea é uma espécie autocompatível e que apresenta atributos florais característicos da síndrome de ornitofilia, sendo Chlorostilbon sp., Eupetomena macroura e o beija-flor não identificado seus polinizadores potenciais no local do presente estudo. To increase the productivity of melon, new hybrids have been released. The aim of this study was to c ompare the differences in morphology and floral biology of two yellow melon hibrids and these could influence the attractiveness of the pollinators. The study was conducted in June 2010, at Embrapa Semiárido (Petrolina-PE), with hybrids BRS Araguaia and Tropical. To evaluate the morphology and anthesis ten flowers were selected of each floral type: hermaphrodite (H) and male (M). The floral visitors were observed simultaneously in the two hybrids, from 5h00a.m until 6h00p.m, in three non-consecutive days. In the morphology, it was found that the Tropical flowers have diameter of corolla higher in two floral types (M: x = 3.82±0.55cm, H: x = 4.74±0.52cm) compared to BRS Araguaia (M: x = 3.46±0.46cm, H: x = 3.77±0.45cm), although the differences were significant only for the hermaphrodites.
