A new type of T1 transmission systems equipment and services will allow customer premises equipment (CPE) users to leverage the capabilities of their existing data transmission systems. Integrated T1 access is the umbrella term for this new technology, which operates by using a single channel line to connect a number of applications to multiple service options. This innovation reduces costs of network access by using only one high capacity line. It also allows a user to respond rapidly in selecting the lowest service cost carrier.

Recent technological developments have made it possible for local exchange carriers toprovide fractional T1 (FT1) services. FT1 services have been traditionally provided by interexchange users by utilizing existing digital cross-current switches. The development of the FT131A gave local exchange carriers with technical capabilities to provide FT1 services at prices within the reach of smaller end users.

The use of smart network equipment could enhance the performance and reliability of copper-based transmission lines used for data-transmission systems. Smart network refers to an array of remotely addressable repeaters, performance-monitoring network interface units and T1 network interface maintenance switches. Suppliers can now answer regional Bell operating companies' requests for fast and affordable repeaterless T1 circuits on copper pairs with the development of high-bit-rate digital subscriber (HDSL) technology. Among the advantages of HDSL are fast and easy installation, performance comparable to fiber's bit error rate and reduced capital expenditures, facility engineering and maintainance costs. It can also provide T1 service without repeaters up to 12,000 ft on 24-gauge copper and up to 9,000ft on 26-gauge.

Remote T1 monitoring equipment is used by GTE Telephone Operations - South Area, Tampa, FL to speed up the location and prevention of faults. The portable equipment monitors lines on a 24 hour basis and allows technicians to dial into a line to monitor activity and problems. T-BERD 121 long-term monitors are used to check lines and to identify faults rapidly. Remote testing assists the technicians when dealing with increasingly complex equipment and enables the company to meet customer expectations.

Chesapeke and Potomac Telephone Co of Virginia evaluated T1 test equipment for use by its central office technicians. Part of a plan to reduce service outages, the evaluation involved both paper studies and practical field tests. Full size and hand held equipment was assessed but hand held devices proved better value for money with as many features as larger equipment. The factors influencing the final choice were; ease of use, screen size, indicator lights, display and propagation delay. The SunSet T1, made by Sunrise Telecom (San Jose CA) and costing $3865 was chosen.
