1. The puzzle of suppression of nuclear level density in N ≈ Z Zn isotopes compared to N > Z

Abstract

A systematic investigation of isospin dependence of nuclear level density (NLD) is performed for the Zn isotopes. Experimental level densities of 67Zn and 61Zn have been determined by analyzing the spectra of evaporated neutrons emitted from the excited 68Zn and 62Zn nuclei populated via 4He + 64Ni and 4He + 58Ni reactions, respectively. At the low excitation energies, the neutron spectra are predominantly contributed by the first-chance decay, leading to 67Zn and 61Zn as daughters for the two cases. A comparison of the present experimental data along with previously measured NLDs of 66Zn, 64Zn, and 60Zn is performed with state-of-the-art microscopic calculations. While the experimental NLDs of stable isotopes (i.e., 67Zn, 66Zn, and 64Zn) align excellently with theoretical predictions, a compelling contrast emerges for the unstable isotopes 61Zn and 60Zn, exhibiting NLDs an order of magnitude lower than predicted. The possible origins of the observed suppression of NLDs for the N ≈ Z isotopes are discussed. A significant reduction of level density for nuclei situated away from the stability line could have critical implications for the calculation of astrophysical reaction rates pertinent to heavy-element nucleosynthesis.

Abstract

Nuclear level density and the level density parameter of 115,119,127Te isotopes are experimentally determined by analyzing the backward angle neutron energy spectra from 4He+112,116,124Sn reactions. Measurements are done in the compound nuclear excitation energy range of 25-42 MeV. Statistical model analysis is performed to test different phenomenological prescriptions of the level density parameter. Our data efficiently scan the explicit dependences of level density on three key factors: nuclear deformation, neutron-proton asymmetry, and the separation from the most stable isobar. It is observed that the experimental data are best described when deviation in atomic number from the corresponding β-stable isobar is explicitly taken into account. Further, nuclear level densities determined from the measured spectra show a reduction for 115,127Te in comparison to that of 119Te, which lies closer to the β-stability line.

3. Search for coherent bremsstrahlung from spontaneous fission at 555 meter deep underground laboratory

Abstract

The spectrum of high-energy γ rays accompanying spontaneous fission of 252Cf has been measured in γ-γ coincidence mode to search for the nucleus-nucleus coherent bremsstrahlung. The experiment was performed at the underground laboratory (555 meter depth) which provides a natural attenuation of the cosmic muon flux by a factor of 2 x 104. A total of 2.5 x 1010 fission events were recorded but high-energy γ rays > 25 MeV were not observed at the level as reported in the previous experiments at surface level. The measurement provides a new upper limit at 95% confidence level of 5 x 10−11 photons/(fission x MeV) for γ-ray emission from the nucleus-nucleus coherent bremsstrahlung in 25-180 MeV energy region, which is two orders of magnitude lower than the previous value. The result has been compared with the existing theoretical models. The fully quantum approach and potential barrier included Coulomb acceleration calculation predict two orders of magnitude and one order of magnitude higher emission probability, respectively, in 25-60 MeV energy range compared to the new upper limit indicating towards the modification of the theories.

Abstract

Precise estimation of the rare direct 3α decay of the Hoyle state of 12C has been made to unveil its unusual α-cluster configurations ranging from linear 3α chain structure to diffuse Bose gas as well as Bose Einstein condensate. The present new high precision, nearly zero background experimental study with 1.6×105 Hoyle events has converged on the upper limit for direct decay at ∼0.019% with 95% confidence limit, which is more than a factor of 2 lower than the limit obtained in the previous studies. Abstract

Efficiency corrected single ratios of neutron and proton spectra in central Sn112+112Sn and Sn124+124Sn collisions at 120 MeV/u are combined with double ratios to provide constraints on the density and momentum dependencies of the isovector mean-field potential. Bayesian analyses of these data reveal that the isoscalar and isovector nucleon effective masses, ms⁎−mv⁎ are strongly correlated. The linear correlation observed in ms⁎−mv⁎ yields a nearly independent constraint on the effective mass splitting Δmnp⁎=(mn⁎−mp⁎)/mN=−0.05−0.09+0.09δ. The correlated constraint on the standard symmetry energy, S0 and the slope, L at saturation density yields the values of symmetry energy S(ρs)=16.8−1.2+1.2 MeV at a sensitive density of ρs/ρ0=0.43−0.05+0.05. Abstract

The High-spin states in 195Tl, populated through the 185,187Re(13C, xn) fusion evaporation reaction at the beam energy of 75 MeV, were studied using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA). More than 50 new γ transitions have been placed in the proposed level scheme which is extended up to the excitation energy of ≈ 5.6 MeV and spin=22.5ħ. Two pairs of degenerate bands based on two different quasi-particle configurations have been identified in this nucleus indicating the first observation of such bands in an odd-A nucleus in A∼190 region and signify the first evidence of multiple chiral bands in a nucleus in this region. The total Routhian surface calculations predict triaxial shapes for both the configurations and thereby, support the experimental observation. The importance of multiple neutron holes in the i13/2 orbital and the stability of shapes for these two configurations have been discussed. Abstract

The phenomenon of collective enhancement in nuclear level density and its fadeout has been probed using neutron evaporation study of two strongly deformed (173Lu, 185Re), and one spherical (201Tl) compound nuclei over the excitation energy (E⁎) range of ∼22–56 MeV. Clear signature of the fadeout of collective enhancement in nuclear level density was observed for the first time in both the deformed evaporation residues 172Lu and 184Re at an excitation energy range ∼14–21 MeV. Calculations based on finite temperature density functional theory, as well as macroscopic–microscopic shape transition model, have strongly established a close correlation between the observed fadeout of collective enhancement and a deformed to spherical nuclear shape transition in these nuclei occurring in the same excitation energy zone. Interestingly, a weak signature of fadeout has also been observed for the spherical residue 200Tl. This is due to a similar shape transition of the deformed excited state configuration of 200Tl.

9. Effects of dietary chromium supplementation on glucose tolerance and primary antibody response against peste des petits ruminants in dwarf Bengal goats (Capra hircus)

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to exploit the immune-modulation effect of trivalent chromium (Cr) for augmenting immunity against peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in dwarf black Bengal goats (Capra hircus). The goats (n = 6 per treatment group) either received a basal diet devoid of supplemental Cr (control) or were supplemented with 0.5 mg Cr as chromic chloride (+Cr) for 60 days. Live weight gain and feed conversion efficiency improved (P < 0.05) in the +Cr dietary group. Supplemental Cr did not affect the total number of monocytes, eosinophils and basophils (P > 0.1) although total leukocytes increased (P < 0.05) and the ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes narrowed down (P < 0.05) in the +Cr dietary group. The effect of Cr supplementation on variables of the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was inconclusive. Compared to the control group, the basal concentration of glucose (P < 0.05) and insulin (P < 0.001) was higher, clearance rate was slower (P < 0.05) and serum half-life was greater (P < 0.05) in the +Cr dietary group during the IVGTT. Over the duration of the experiment, serum concentration of insulin increased (P < 0.001) and that of cortisol decreased (P < 0.01) in the +Cr group, which also showed a relatively higher primary antibody (Ab) response against PPR on days 10 (P < 0.01) and 20 (P < 0.05) post-vaccination. In conclusion, the experiment indicated that supplementation of Cr as CrCl3, in the diet of non-stressed goats, may improve primary Ab response against PPR and help confer an augmented immunity to the disease besides promoting growth and feed conversion.

Adult goats (no. = 18) were supplemented with chromium (Cr, 0.5 mg/kg concentrate) for 120 days as Cr chloride and Cr yeast complex and their responses in terms of glucose tolerance and serum profiles of metabolites and hormones were measured. The goats were fed 200 g/day of the concentrate and reared under a semi-intensive regimen. Cr supplementation significantly reduced serum glucose ( P = 0.049) and cholesterol ( P = 0.0001) levels compared with the same in the control group (calculated as % change between days 0 and 120). Abstract

Resistive heating and mechanical rolling methods have been employed to prepare isotopically enriched thin target foils of 116Sn (~380 \mu g/cm2), 124Sn(~400 \mu g/cm2) and thicker foils of 112Sn (1.7 mg/cm2),120Sn (1.6 mg/cm2),respectively. Preparation of enriched targets with small amount of material, selection of releasing agent for thin targets and separation of deposited material insolvent were among the several challenges while fabrication of the thin targets. Uniformity of the targets has been measured using 241Am {\alpha}-source. NaCl has been used as releasing agent in preparation of the thin targets. These targets have been successfully used in nuclear physics experiments at VECC.

Abstract

The present paper deals with the impact of various sublethal levels of temperature (26, 31, 33, 36, 39, 42 and 45o C) on growth and heat shock protein (Hsp) expression in freshwater green alga Chlorella vulgaris. Impact of select levels of temperature on growth rate (based on optical density), population count, chlorophyll-a and biomass, of the alga was evaluated in artificial growth medium for a period of 15 days. To determine the induction of Hsp in the alga, it was exposed to select temperature levels for 3 hrs. and further kept for 6 hrs at culturing conditions at 26o C. Induction of Hsp was confirmed by immuno detection followed by SDSPolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The select growth parameters of the alga were reduced drastically at 39, 42 & 45o C. Temperatures below 39o C may be considered as the limit of safe exposure for thermal stress of the alga. The Hsp 70 expression was also observed only at 39o C.

Abstract

The upcoming 50 kt magnetized iron calorimeter (ICAL) detector at the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is designed to study the atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos separately over a wide range of energies and path lengths. The primary focus of this experiment is to explore the Earth matter effects by observing the energy and zenith angle dependence of the atmospheric neutrinos in the multi-GeV range. This study will be crucial to address some of the outstanding issues in neutrino oscillation physics, including the fundamental issue of neutrino mass hierarchy. In this document, we present the physics potential of the detector as obtained from realistic detector simulations. We describe the simulation framework, the neutrino interactions in the detector, and the expected response of the detector to particles traversing it. The ICAL detector can determine the energy and direction of the muons to a high precision, and in addition, its sensitivity to multi-GeV hadrons increases its physics reach substantially. Its charge identification capability, and hence its ability to distinguish neutrinos from antineutrinos, makes it an efficient detector for determining the neutrino mass hierarchy. In this report, we outline the analyses carried out for the determination of neutrino mass hierarchy and precision measurements of atmospheric neutrino mixing parameters at ICAL, and give the expected physics reach of the detector with 10 years of runtime. We also explore the potential of ICAL for probing new physics scenarios like CPT violation and the presence of magnetic monopoles.

Abstract

A traveling wave tube (TWT) operating in the frequency band 5-18GHz with output power 150W is presently under development at e2v. The design of the tube has been carried out using an existing mini-TWT as a baseline. To start with, a number of codes available commercially and developed internally have been validated experimentally to establish their suitability in using them for design purpose. These codes have been used to design the TWT and sensitivity analysis of each component to set the dimensional tolerances. This paper presents experimental validation of codes, design methodology and experimental results of the TWT.

17. Mini-TWT in gain and phase matched applications

Abstract

A gain and phase matched traveling wave tube (TWT) e2v-GPMT operating over a band of 7.5-18GHz with a minimum output power of 60W is presently under production at e2v. The present design is based on an existing mini-TWT that incorporates a focus electrode switching gun, a phase velocity tapered helix slow wave structure, a single stage depressed collector, an SMA input and a TNC output connector. During development and pre-production stages a number of tubes were manufactured and their performances were matched. In this paper we have described gain and phase matching techniques of such devices. Experimental results of a number of matched devices have been collated that show a gain match within ±3dB and phase match within ±15°.

Abstract

The present study deals with a simple mathematical solution for sharing of discharges at a bifurcation considering simple hydraulic equations like equation of continuity, Chezy’s equation, conservation of momentum, etc. Finally, theoretical models for prediction of discharges through the bifurcated channels as a function of radius of curvature, slope, bifurcation angle, velocity of flow, etc. have been developed. A series of physical model studies simulating a typical bifurcation on river Kasai in West Midnapur district in West Bengal have also been conducted on a movable bed model at River Research Institute, Haringhata, West Bengal, India. The theoretical model was found to compare well with recently observed prototype data and physical model test results.

Abstract

High-resolution reconstruction of reaction dynamics in nuclear-physics experiments with radioactive beams requires accurate knowledge of the beam-particle trajectories and the precise alignment of detectors with respect to the reaction target. In many cases, sub-millimeter position measurements of fragile beam-tracking and particle–detector systems are essential. We have constructed a laser-based alignment system (LBAS) which is a non-contact, high-precision alignment tool designed for applications where excellent spatial positioning must be achieved. The working principles and performance of the laser-based alignment system are presented.

Abstract

The electric field inside a Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) is likely to be influenced by the non-uniform inner surfaces of the RPC electrodes. We have studied the effect of this field perturbation on the performance of the RPC by a Monte Carlo method, which simulates the generation of signal from the detector. For the present study, we have analyzed the effect of the field variation on the time resolution and efficiency of a 0.3 mm single-gap timing RPC. Finally the results obtained from the Monte Carlo study are compared with an analytical calculation.

Abstract

Charged particles and photons have been measured in central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV in a common (eta-phi)-phase space region in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The measured distributions have been analyzed to quantify the frequency with which phase space regions of varying sizes have either small or large neutral pion fraction. The measured results are compared with VENUS model simulated events and with mixed events. Events with both large and small charged-neutral fluctuations are observed to occur more frequently than expected statistically, as deduced from mixed events, or as predicted by model simulations, with the difference becoming more prominent with decreasing size of the A Delta eta-Delta phi region. Abstract

To improve the performance of a broadband traveling-wave tube (TWT), a helix pitch profile incorporating a section with reduced phase velocity followed by a positive phase-velocity taper is used. A simple technique to design a pitch profile of this kind is elaborated upon and later applied to an existing 6-18-GHz uniform pitch mini-TWT to improve its interaction efficiency. By using the newly designed helix, a TWT is developed, which shows increases in electronic efficiency and output power up to 8.75% points and 2.6 dB (75 W), respectively. Further application of this method to another uniform pitch baseline tube results in similar improvements.

Abstract

The effectiveness of positive phase velocity tapering to improve the performance of a broadband helix traveling-wave tube (TWT) has been investigated. A large-signal model of an existing 4.5-18 GHz two-section mini-TWT with uniform pitch has been validated against the experimental results, and used as a starting point to design and develop a number of TWTs with different taper lengths. Comparisons between the experimental results of uniform pitch TWT and positively tapered TWTs show significant improvements in output power, electronic efficiency, and second harmonic content throughout the operating frequency band for the positively tapered TWTs. Increases in electronic efficiency and output power up to 5.2% points and 50 W (1.7 dB), respectively, have been achieved.

Abstract

Characteristic features of neutron detection properties of the loaded liquid scintillators, i.e., capture time distribution, pulse shape discrimination, and time resolution have been studied for two Gd-loaded liquid scintillators, BC521 and BC525. A new technique to measure the capture time distribution with a small size neutron detector (capacity 7.3 l) in combination with BaF 2 γ-ray detectors has been demonstrated. The measured capture time distributions were in good agreement with the results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation using the computer code DENIS.

Abstract

Random walk and genetic algorithm techniques have been implemented in a 3-D collector simulation code to automate the design optimization of multistage depressed collectors. An axisymmetric four-stage collector and an asymmetric two-stage collector have been optimized following both approaches. Procedures for the implementation of these methods in any suitable code and simulated performance of the collectors are demonstrated. The results show significant improvement in the collector performances due to optimization. A comparison between the optimum collector performances that were obtained using these methods has also been carried out.

Abstract

A simple and accurate method has been developed to optimize the performance of coaxial couplers for traveling-wave tubes using a 3-D electromagnetic field simulation code. The new technique, which is a combination of numerical and analytical procedures, is presented with a comparison with conventional practice. By using this method, a number of couplers with Sub- Miniature A, Threaded Neill-Concelman, and waveguide output for different tubes were modeled, validated by the experimental cold test data, and optimized. The use of this technique can reduce the optimization time by up to 90% in comparison with the conventional numerical only approach.

Abstract

Diethyl phthalate (DEP) enter into aquatic environment from industries manufacturing cosmetics, plastic and many commercial products and can pose potential fish and human health hazard. This experiment evaluated effects of DEP in adult male (89 g) common carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) by exposing them to fractions of LC 50 (1/500–1/2.5) doses with every change of water for 28 days. Vitellogenin induction metabolic enzymes, somatic indices and bioaccumulation were studied on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day. The 96th hour LC 50 of DEP in fingerlings was found to be 48 mg/L. Compared to control, except increase ( P P P P P C. carpio to DEP dose that is as low as 1/500th fraction of LC 50 .

Abstract

Of the huge annual worldwide production (500,000 MT in 1997) of alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEs) that are widely used as nonionic surfactants and anti-oxidants in variety of products, 60% ends up in water bodies. They undergo biodegradation to form octyl-, butyl-, and nonyl-phenols. This experiment evaluated effects of 4-tert-butyl phenol (4-TBP) in Cyprinus carpio, a projected candidate species in sewage fed fisheries. The 96th h LC50 of 4-TBP was found to be 6.9 mg/L. Fishes were treated with 1/10th (0.69 mg/L), 1/5th (1.38 mg/L), and 1/3rd (2.3 mg/L) dose of LC50. Whereas there was significant (P < 0.01) decrease in alkaline phosphatase [EC 3.1.3.1] and aspartate aminotransferase [EC 2.6.1.1] activity; alanine aminotranferase [EC 2.6.1.2] and acid phosphatase [3.1.3.2] (except decrease at 1/10th dose of LC50) activity, vitellogenin production in muscle and hepatic- and reno-somatic indices were increased compared to control. With all the dose levels tested, testicular-somatic index (testis size) was reduced (P < 0.01) and histo-architectural changes in testicular and liver tissue were found even in group given 1/3rd dose of LC50.

Abstract

Two different placer samples from the Navaladi and Surungudi area of Teri,Tamilnadu, in southern India, were collected and characterized in terms of their heavy mineral content. Mineralogical analysis on both the samples revealed the presence of high amounts of garnet and ilmenite. The alteration characteristics of ilmenite from these deposits were investigated by optical and electron probe microanalysis. Optical microscopic studies revealed that the alteration of ilmenite was seen to proceed along grain boundaries and/or fractures resulting in an amorphous to crypto- or microcrystalline mass resembling leucoxene. The alteration is in the nascent stage. Mineral chemistry by electron probe micro-analysis revealed the enrichment of TiO2, MgO, Al2O3, Cr2O3, SiO2, V2O5 and Na2O in the altered products and loss of iron oxide and manganese oxide from the ilmenite grains during weathering leading to the formation of leucoxene. Similarly EPMA studies on garnet indicated that it is of the almandine variety. This study reveals that the alteration of ilmenite by weathering leads to unstable phases, with complex elemental distribution patterns. The physico-chemical characteristics of the mineral and, in turn, the down-stream metallurgical processing are affected by such alteration processes. Abstract

Directed and elliptic flow of pi(0) - decay photons in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions has been studied near midrapidity in an analysis of data obtained with the photon spectrometer LEDA of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. Preliminary results on the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow have been obtained for various centrality classes for p(T) > 0.2 GeV/c and 2.3 < y < 2.9. The results are compared with the pion flow.

A helix traveling wave tube N20265, operating over a frequency band of 2 to 7 GHz has been developed and its performances have been evaluated experimentally. Simulated data of the tube has been compared with hot and cold test results which are in good agreement.

Abstract

The Delta(++)-resonance production in central 158 A GeV Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at the CERN SPS has been studied. The Delta(++) production was estimated from the invariant mass spectrum of p pi(+)-pairs by subtracting a mixed event background. The measured Delta(++) abundance is compared with the results from other experiments at lower energies, and with a model calculation assuming thermal and chemical equilibrium. Abstract

An event-by-event analysis of the azimuthal angular correlation with respect to the reaction plane has been carried out for K+ and pi(+) emission near mid-rapidity in 158 A . GeV Pb + Pb collisions. In semi-central collisions, K+ mesons are found to be preferentially emitted out of the reaction plane, while pi(+) mesons are emitted in the reaction plane. The results suggest that the kaon emission is influenced by in-medium potential effects in addition to collective flow effects. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Spectroscopic constants for the ground and low-lying excited electronic states of the Ga 2 molecule have been studied using MRSDCI and MRCPA methods with an extensive basis set of Gaussian-type functions. In this study, we are going to present spectroscopic constants and potential energy curves for the ground 3 Π u and the excited 3 Σ g − , 1 Σ g + , 1 Π u , 1 Δ g , (2) 1 Σ g + and 3 Σ u − states, in which electron correlation between semi-valence (3d) and valence (4s,4p) and among valence electrons is taken into account. Our calculated vibrational frequency for the ground state, 3 Π u , is 175 cm −1 by CISD with Davidson's correction and 170 cm −1 by MRCPA, which are in good agreement with the experimental value of 180 cm −1 . The dissociation energy for the ground state, reported to be 1.28 eV, compares well with the experimental value of 1.4 eV. Avoided crossing between the two lowest 1 Σ g + states was properly described by MRCPA.

Abstract

We present recent results obtained with the WA98 experiment at CERN SPS. The experiment consists of large acceptance hadron and photon spectrometers which allow to study many aspects of heavy ion collisions. We use event-by-event measurements of charged and neutral particle multiplicity to establish the limit on the prodution of Disoriented Chiral Condensates. We use the Plastic Ball detector together with a set of tracking chambers to study collective flow. The tracking chambers together with the excellent particle identification allow us to study the production of Δ ++ . The high resolution photon calorimeter array allows us to study inclusive photon and π 0 spectra and search for excess direct photons.

Abstract

The restoration of chiral symmetry and its subsequent breaking through a phase transition has been predicted to create regions of Disoriented Chiral Condensates (DCC). This phenomenon has been predicted to cause anomalous fluctuations in the relative production of charged and neutral pions in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions. The WA98 experiment has been used to measure charged and photon multiplicities in the central region of 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. In a sample of 212646 events, no clear DCC signal can be distinguished. Abstract

A triangular outlier of coal-bearing lower Gondwana rocks comprises a tectonic window within the Precambrian metamorphic terrain of the Rangit Valley, in the eastern Himalays of India. Due to a series of tectonic events which took place during the Mesozoic and Tertiary the succession has become reversed and the coal has undergone severe physical, chemical, microstructural and optical changes. Studies reveal that (1) the rank of the coal prior to tectonism was low, (2) the coal underwent oxidation in the peat forming stage and during subsequent orogenic stages but effect of oxidation on the properties of coal was insignificant, (3) the coal reached its present abnormally high rank mainly due to heating under tectonic pressure and (4) the heat which was generated due to tectonic pressure, affected all the coal seams of this belt.

Abstract

Azimuthal correlations of photons produced at mid-rapidity in 200 A GeV S + Au collisions have been studied using a preshower photon multiplicity detector in the WA93 experiment. The Fourier expansion method has been employed to estimate the event plane via the anisotropy of the event as a function of centrality. The event plane correlation technique has been used to determine the true event anisotropy, beyond the anisotropy which arises due to finite multiplicity. The VENUS event generator with rescattering and proper simulation of the detector response can explain only a portion of the observed anisotropy. The residual anisotropy is found to be of the order of 5% for semi-central collisions. This suggests that directed collective flow of the produced particles is present at SPS energies. The nuSTORM facility has been designed to deliver beams of electron neutrinos and muon neutrinos (and their anti-particles) from the decay of a stored muon beam with a central momentum of 3.8 GeV/c and a momentum acceptance of 10%. The facility is unique in that it will: 1. Allow searches for sterile neutrinos of exquisite sensitivity to be carried out; 2. Serve future long- and short-baseline neutrino-oscillation programs by providing definitive measurements of electron neutrino and muon neutrino scattering cross sections off nuclei with percent-level precision; and 3. Constitutes the crucial first step in the development of muon accelerators as a powerful new technique for particle physics. The document describes the facility in detail and demonstrates its physics capabilities. This document was submitted to the Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee in consideration for Stage I approval. Abstract

The paper describes the application of the "equivalent charge distribution method" for designing the geometry of a special type of dipole antenna used for the faithful reproduction of electromagnetic pulse type waveforms. Using this method, the design equation of the surfaces of an asymptotic conical dipole antenna (ACD) has been derived. The surface of the asymptotic conical dipole antenna, obtained by this method, is compared with those computed by the method of Baum (1969). The response of an ACD antenna, fabricated using design data computed from the design equations derived in the paper, is measured and presented. >

A number of helix mini traveling wave tubes (TWTs) operating over a multi-octave frequency band have been designed and developed during last ten years. In this paper, the critical areas of design and development of these devices are elaborated and supported by experimental results. Abstract

Experiments were conducted on 18 Black Bengal goats consisting of six does, six castrated males and six bucks each under grazing and stallfed conditions, in order to determine body composition and energy utilization in three different seasons. Body weight of all goats was maintained throughout the season on para ( Brachiara mutica ) pasture. There were no detectable differences between sex, treatment and seasons in gross energy intake. Average metabolisable energy (kcal/kg W 0.75 /day) intake throughout the seasons was 109.00 and 115.66 in stallfed and grazing goats, respectively, which provided sufficient energy for maintaining body weight throughout the seasons. Prediction of body composition from antipyrine space gave confirmation of maintenance requirement in stallfed and grazing goats at that level. Grazing Black Bengal goats have the ability to maintain nutritional needs from low pastures by conserving energy expenditures.

Abstract

Fabric deformation in the roll-making operation and the resulting state of stress in the fabric roll are analyzed through a discrete continuum model. The fabric elastic properties are assumed to be linear and anisotropic. Only the static case is considered, wherein dynamic effects in roll making are neglected. Effects of fabric Young's modulus in the warp and thickness directions, tube elastic modulus, fabric Poisson's ratios, and fabric weight per unit area on the state of stress inside the roll are parametrically investigated. Numerical results are obtained and discussed for each parameter. Theo retical results show that when a constant in-plane tension is applied for winding, the fabric may actually come under in-plane compression inside the roll. This observation is believed to be important, since it may reveal one of the causes of possible buckling and unevenness inside the roll. The theoretical model and the numercial solution procedures developed can easily be modified to incorporate nonlinear load-deformation behavior of fabrics.
