We highlight the importance of magnetic reconnection at the heliopause, both as one of the key processes driving the interaction between solar and interstellar media, but also as an element of the definition of the heliopause itself. We highlight the main observations that have fed the current debates on the definition, location and shape of the heliopause. We explain that discriminating between the current interpretations of plasma and magnetic field structures near the heliopause necessitates appropriate measurements which are lacking on Voyager 1 and 2, and describe some of the ensuing requirements for thermal plasma measurements on a future Interstellar Probe. Single-crystal europium iron garnet (EuIG) thin films epitaxially strain-grown on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG)(100) substrates using off-axis sputtering have strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). By varying the sputtering conditions, we have tuned the europium/iron (Eu/Fe) composition ratios in the films to tailor the film strains. The films exhibited an extremely smooth, particle-free surface with roughness as low as 0.1 nm as observed using atomic force microscopy. High-resolution x-ray diffraction analysis and reciprocal space maps showed in-plane epitaxial film growth, very smooth film/substrate interface, excellent film crystallinity with a small full width at half maximum of 0.012$^{\circ}$ in the rocking curve scans, and an in-plane compressive strain without relaxation. In addition, spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy showed an atomically abrupt interface between the EuIG film and GGG. The measured squarish out-of-plane magnetization-field hysteresis loops by vibrating sample magnetometry in conjunction with the measurements from angle-dependent x-ray magnetic dichroism demonstrated the PMA in the films. We have tailored the magnetic properties of the EuIG thin films, including saturation magnetization ranging from 71.91 to 124.51 emu/c.c. (increase with the (Eu/Fe) ratios), coercive field from 27 to 157.64 Oe, and the strength of PMA field ($H_\bot$) increasing from 4.21 to 18.87 kOe with the in-plane compressive strain from -0.774 to -1.044%. We have also investigated spin transport in Pt/EuIG bi-layer structure and evaluated the real part of spin mixing conductance to be $3.48\times10^{14} {\Omega}^{-1}m^{-2}$. Based on the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) medium-resolution spectroscopic survey (MRS), we report the discovery of nine super Li-rich unevolved stars with A(Li) $>$ 3.8 dex. These objects show unusually high levels of lithium abundances up to three times higher than the meteoritic value of 3.3 dex, which indicates that they must have experienced a history of lithium enrichment. It is found that seven of our program stars are fast rotators with $vsini>9$ km\,s$^{-1}$, which suggests that the accretion of circumstellar matter may be the main contributor to the lithium enhancement of these unevolved stars, however, other sources cannot be excluded., 10 pages, 3 figures

Background Hypertension contributes to the main risk factor of the high incidence of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Successful control of blood pressure requires behavioral changes; therefore, it is of considerable importance to develop a web-based self-management program that assist patients to tailor their lifestyle and empower them manage their disease. Objective Our primary aims were to evaluate the effects of a web-based self-management program for improving blood pressure and blood lipids control in patients with primary hypertension. Our secondary aims were to evaluate the effects of the web-based self-management program on enhancing patients' lifestyle, medication adherence and self-efficacy. Methods This randomized controlled trial used permuted block randomization design and randomly divided the 222 patients into the intervention group (n=111) and control group (n=111). Patients in the intervention group received the web-based self-management program, and the control group received standard care. Lifestyle and medication adherence were assessed by using the Hypertension Self-Care Activity Level Effects Scale (H-SCALE). Self-efficacy was measured through using the Chinese version of the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale (SES6C). The data of blood pressure and serum lipids were collected through web-based self-report and chart review. We used the generalized estimating equations to evaluate the effects of the intervention. Results There were no statistically significant differences of the baseline demographic characteristics and antihypertensive dosages from both groups. The intervention group received the web-based self-management program and showed a decrease in systolic blood pressures (−19.82 mmHg vs 7.99 mmHg, p Conclusion The greatest benefit of this program was allowing participants to consult dietary issues with us immediately. Since lifestyles vary among different individuals, we considered the individuality of each participant when providing feedback and involving them in the devising of interventions to increase their confidence in hypertension self-care and ultimately achieve the optimal control of blood pressure and blood lipid levels. Simultaneous rotational and vibrational temperatures are measured in an N2 plasma with rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) resolved with a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA)-based spectrometer. A VIPA spectrally separates rotational transitions for each vibrational state, allowing vibrational populations to be directly measured. VIPA-CARS is shown to provide more accurate measurements of non-equilibrium temperatures than grating-resolved rotational CARS. The general characteristics, limitations, and potential uses of VIPA-CARS are discussed.

The development of inexpensive radiation-resistant glass is important for potential applications in displays, optics, and nuclear or space environments. This study considers the γ-ray and X-ray resistance of glasses relevant to low-cost float glass (i.e., SiO2–Na2O–CaO–MgO), modified with various concentrations (0 – 10 mol%) of Sb2O3. Various doses (0, 0.2, 2.0, and 5.0 MGy) of γ-rays from the decay of 60Co nuclei, and X-rays generated by an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer, have been applied to this series of Sb2O3-modified float-type glasses to study their resistance to radiation-induced damage. Irradiation leads to the formation of various defect centres (HC2, HC1, TE, E', and E− types). These radiation-induced defects cause photo-darkening of the glass, which reduces its visible-wavelength optical transparency. The addition of Sb2O3 to these glasses led to reductions in the formation of radiation-induced defect-centres, combined with forbidden bandgap narrowing which led to non-linear changes in visible-wavelength absorption as a function of Sb2O3 content such that the most transparent irradiated glasses were advantageously obtained at low (0.5 mol%) Sb2O3 content. The mechanisms of defect-formation involve the creation of Sb4+-ions which assists in mitigating the effects of irradiation on the visible-wavelength transparency of the glass. The 0.5 mol% of Sb2O3-modified float glass provided a maximized concentration of Sb4+-ions upon γ-ray irradiation. Combined with the smallest changes in the UV band gap narrowing, it enabled this glass to retain the highest visible-wavelength transparency at all doses of ionizing radiation studied (0.2, 2 and 5 MGy). This work confirms the substantially enhanced radiation resistance of Sb2O3-modified float-type glasses compared to standard float glass, which could potentially be further developed towards commercialization, for example as a low-cost solution for radiation resistant applications.

The Braun and Simpson’s (2004) study indicates that the Pause method is an effective teaching approach for auditing based on four sets of hypotheses in developing students’ oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. In addition, it is more beneficial to the learning process and more enjoyable than the lecture-only method. The extent of achieving both of these is dependent on the type of activity that is consistent with the student’s preferred Pause method activity. Students will achieve higher examination scores when following their preferred Pause activity. Our study replicates the Braun and Simpson’s study in Greater China using one university in Hong Kong and one in mainland China as students in these jurisdictions are more passive learners and their value of learning more extrinsic than intrinsic. The results are similar to the Braun and Simpson’s study, thus enhancing the universality of the “Pause” method.

SummaryBackground Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of liver-related mortality in people living with HIV, where co-infection with hepatotropic viruses accelerates the course of chronic liver disease. Aim To evaluate whether the albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade, a more accurate marker of liver dysfunction in HCC, might identify patients with progressive liver dysfunction in the context of HIV/hepatitis co-infection. Methods Using uni- and multi-variable analyses, we studied the albumin-bilirubin grade as a predictor of overall survival (OS) in a large, multi-center cohort of patients with HIV-associated HCC recruited from 44 centres in 9 countries within the Liver Cancer in HIV study group. Patients who underwent liver transplantation were excluded. Results A total of 387 patients, predominantly HCV co-infected (78%) with balanced representation of all Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages (A = 33%, B = 18%, C = 37%, D = 12%) were recruited. At HCC diagnosis, 84% had been on anti-retrovirals for a median duration of 8.8 years. With conventional lactation management, sows only conceive after weaning. However, intermittent suckling (IS) enables follicle growth and ovulation during lactation by reducing the suckling-induced inhibition of gonadotrophins. The current study evaluated IS regimes initiated at Day 21 or Day 28 post farrowing compared to conventional weaning on Day 28, in primiparous sows. Sows (Large White and Large White x Landrace) were randomly allocated to Control (C28; n = 44), IS21 (n = 29) and IS28 (n = 34) treatments at Day 20. Sows in IS21 and IS28 were subjected to intermittent suckling from Day 21 or Day 28 post farrowing. During IS, sows were separated from their piglets for 8 h daily, then weaned 7 d later at Day 28 and Day 35 respectively, whereas piglets in the C28 treatment had continuous access to sows until weaning at Day 28. Percentage of IS sows that showed oestrus during lactation was 59% (16/27) in IS21 and 72% (21/29) in IS28 (P > 0.05). Cumulatively over the lactation and 7 d post-weaning period, 93% of IS21, 85% of IS28 and 93% (31/33) of C28 sows showed oestrus (P > 0.05). Pregnancy rate at Day 30 post mating, for sows that were mated during lactation was 93% (15/16) in IS21 and 95% (20/21) in IS28, whereas C28 sows had a 96% (30/31) pregnancy rate (P > 0.05). No difference was found in the time of oestrus relative to weaning (C28) or onset of IS (IS21 and IS28) (P > 0.05). The IS sows that did not ovulate before weaning all showed oestrus within 7 days from weaning, and the weaning to oestrus interval was similar to control sows (P > 0.05). However, for all IS sows (across IS treatments) that showed lactational ovulation, LH secretion pattern at onset of IS was different (P < 0.05) from the sows that did not ovulate in lactation. Plasma progesterone concentration tended to be lower in the IS21 treatment (P < 0.10) compared to the C28 sows at 4 d after ovulation. The subsequent litter size was not affected by treatments although numerically lower for IS21 (P > 0.05). The present study showed that in modern primiparous sows, lactational oestrus can be induced and pregnancy can be maintained at a similar rate and producing comparable subsequent litter sizes to conventionally weaned sows when IS commenced at four weeks post farrowing. However, when IS commences at three weeks post farrowing, this may affect the percentage of sows showing oestrus in lactation and may potentially influence subsequent litter size.
