The development of an oral care path focuses on the identification of the early indicators of disease. Once the risks have been identified and diagnosed, the proper therapies can be selected and prescribed. The experienced practitioner must meld clinical experience and observation with evidence-based scientific dentistry and information on the treatment and prevention of continued disease for the prosthodontic patient after restorations have been completed. The incorporation of dental implants has not allowed for complications of caries and periodontal disease on teeth and implants. Osseoseparation is necessary for justification of continued maintenance.

The threat of climate change and global warming is now recognised worldwide and some alarming manifestations of change have occurred. The Asian continent, because of its size and diversity, may be affected significantly by the consequences of climate change, and its new status as a 'hub' of livestock production gives it an important role in mitigating possible impacts of climate variability on animal health. Animal health may be affected by climate change in four ways: heat-related diseases and stress, extreme weather events, adaptation of animal production systems to new environments, and emergence or re-emergence of infectious diseases, especially vector-borne diseases critically dependent on environmental and climatic conditions. To face these new menaces, the need for strong and efficient Veterinary Services is irrefutable, combined with good coordination of public health services, as many emerging human diseases are zoonoses. Asian developing countries have acute weaknesses in their Veterinary Services, which jeopardises the global surveillance network essential for early detection of hazards. Indeed, international cooperation within and outside Asia is vital to mitigating the risks of climate change to animal health in Asia.

Sulfation of inorganic chlorides (KCl, CaCl2 and NaCl) of mean particles size 75–125 μm was done in a lab-scale tubular reactor. The reactor was supplied with a mixed gas consisting of SO2:0.3–1.3 vol%, O2:2.5–15 vol% and H2O:5–20 vol% in the temperature range 623–1123 K. The rates of HCl emission from the particles samples were measured and compared. It was found that at 1023 K, an HCl of about 8000 ppm was emitted from CaCl2 and this emission concentration was more than 3 times as high as those from NaCl and KCl. The reaction kinetic parameters such as rate constants and reaction orders with respect to SO2, O2 and H2O partial pressures were determined for the sulfation of NaCl, KCl and CaCl2. The rate of HCl emission from KCl, CaCl2 and NaCl became increasingly high when the temperature was raised above 923 K and depend on SO2, O2, and H2O partial pressures. It was considered that an increase in the rate of HCl emission from the inorganic chlorides at temperatures above 923 K was caused by a change in the reaction mode from a gas–solid to a gas–liquid and/or a gas phase reaction, owing to a partial melting and/or volatilization of the inorganic chlorides.

The cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor, flavopiridol, was tested as a potential new cancer therapeutic agent to treat canine lymphoma by examining its effect on cell growth of canine lymphoma cell lines in vitro. Flavopiridol induced profound cell death in all eight lymphoma cell lines at 400 nM, and in all cases cell death was due to apoptosis. Apoptosis was inhibited by caspase inhibitor, despite the variable sensitivities between cell lines. Analysis of the mechanism of flavopiridol-induced apoptosis showed that Rb phosphorylation was inhibited, possibly due to CDK4 or CDK6 inhibition. There was also decreased expression of Rb protein and anti-apoptotic proteins, Mcl-1 and XIAP, possibly through transcriptional regulation by inhibition of CDK7 or CDK9 activation. Canine lymphoma cell line-xenotransplanted mice were then treated with flavopiridol and profound tumour shrinkage was observed. This study describes a new therapeutic approach using flavopiridol for canine lymphoma treatment.

A position and speed sensorless control using the counter electromotive force of a permanent-magnet motor (PM) debases the control performance at a low speed. We propose a controllable system at full speed, including a zero speed using saliency. At low speed, the sensorless control is made by observing a current ripple at a time when alternating voltage has been applied to a salient-pole motor. Also, for discriminating the S and N poles of the magnet, magnetic saturation is used. A device has been applied to the motor rotor to allow the magnetic saturation to come about easily. Furthermore, at a time of high speed, drive at a full-speed range has been accomplished by switching smoothly over to a sensorless driving system making use of counter electromotive force. All algorithms are implemented by software, and this system can operate successively from starting to high-speed operation. The paper discusses the operational principles at a low speed, analysis and experimental results, the control scheme, how to changeover the control mode at high speed, and the experimental results.

We study molecular beam epitaxy growth, morphology, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of Co nanoislands on CaF${}_{2}$/Si(111) surface. In order to have a full appreciation of complex growth kinetics at different stages, a comprehensive study of Co growth on CaF${}_{2}$ is carried out by atomic force, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopies in the direct space, as well as by x-ray and electron diffraction in the reciprocal space. These experimental data are complemented by theoretical modeling. Magnetic properties are characterized by magneto-optical Kerr effect and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometries. Key effects influencing the Co growth on fluorite are addressed, including the sticking probability, the preferential nucleation sites, the size and shape time evolution, the dependence of Co morphology on temperature and Co exposure, and the coalescence mechanism. The two-stage deposition technique is developed, whereby the low-temperature seeding stage is used to facilitate Co nucleation, and the follow-up high-temperature deposition yields Co particles with high crystalline quality. Our results enable precise control over the resulting morphology, spatial ordering, and crystal structure affecting the magnetic properties. In particular, it is demonstrated that the transformation from dense to isolated Co nanoparticles leads to the change of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and also the sign of polar and longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effects.

Forty-one complete mandibular subperiosteal implant-supported and retained dentures were consecutively inserted between 1952 and 1971, and patients were monitored through 1992. After variables and methods of follow-up were described, the implants were divided into three categories: 14 (34%) nonfunctional implants, 9 (22%) functioning implants, and 18 (44%) functional implants prematurely terminated by death or cause unrelated to implant condition. Five percent of the implants failed by 5 years, 22% failed by 10 years, 34% failed by 20 years, and none failed after 20 years. Nine implants were still functioning 21 to 36 years after insertion, of which five were functioning for more than 30 years. The implants that were developed later were notably superior to earlier implants. The results of this review could be interpreted to suggest consideration of mandibular subperiosteal implants for selected patients, particularly those with resorbed mandibles.

Toxic shock syndrome caused by group A streptococci (GAS) is rare around the time of delivery, but it may predispose pregnant women to a life-threatening condition.A 32-year-old primigravida at 21 weeks of gestation was taken to our hospital with acute severe abdominal pain following fever. On admission the fetus was found to be dead, and intrauterine fetal demise due to placental abruption was suspected. An emergency cesarean section found no sign of placental abruption. Soon after the surgery, the patient went into shock but was successfully treated with intensive care. Although repeated blood cultures failed to detect microorganisms, the patient was positive for streptococcal pyrogenic toxin A, which is a superantigen of GAS.Once GAS infection is suspected, regardless of negative blood cultures, supportive care in the intensive care unit is mandatory.

The effect of rice-cooking water to the daily arsenic intake of Bangladeshi people was investigated. At the first field survey, uncooked rice and cooked rice of 29 families were collected. Their arsenic concentrations were 0.22±0.11 and 0.26±0.15 mg/kg dry wt, respectively. In 15 families, arsenic concentration in rice increased after cooking. Good correlation (R2=0.89) was observed between arsenic in rice-cooking water and the difference of arsenic concentration in rice by cooking. In the second survey, we collected one-day duplicated food of 18 families. As a result, we estimated that six of 18 families likely used the arsenic contaminated water for cooking rice even they drank less arsenic-contaminated water for drinking purpose. We also conducted rice-cooking experiments in the laboratory, changing arsenic concentration in rice-cooking water. Clear linear relationships were obtained between the arsenic in rice-cooking water and the difference of arsenic concentration in rice by cooking. Factors that affect arsenic concentration in cooked rice are suggested as follows: (1) arsenic concentration in uncooked rice, (2) that in rice-cooking water, (3) difference in water content of rice before and after cooking, and (4) types of rice, especially, the difference between parboiled and non-parboiled rice.

Summary The paper deals with a newly developed method for electrochemical dressing of metal bonded superabrasive wheels. In this method, alternating current derived from a wall outlet via an inexpensive transformer is supplied to a wheel through twin electrodes, hence a troublesome brush and an expensive DC power source are unnecessary. The preprocess dressing of a wheel (d 3 = 200 mm) was accomplished within a few minutes. Inprocess dressing of a wheel resulted in lower grinding force, longer wheel life and higher grinding efficiency in grinding of ceramic materials and hard metals.

Anonymous credit card systems are ones, in which credit card holders can conceal individual transactions from card companies, while enabling card companies to calculate total expenditures of individual cardholders. Although an already proposed mechanism enables card companies also to detect dishonest transaction records, some of them are detected at the end of service periods, and losses caused by this detection delay may grow large to tolerate. To minimize risks caused by dishonest transactions, this paper proposes a mechanism to detect every dishonest transaction record at its occurrence time, and to limit total expenditures of individual cardholders while maintaining anonymity of their transactions.

Planar type of liquid crystal (LC) cell is prepared using a coplanar waveguide (CPW) and ITO glass substrate for electronically tunable phase shifter in the ultrahigh frequency region. Since the sandwich cell structure of this device is almost the same with the conventional LC cell such as LC displays, it is easy to adopt the conventional LCD technology for the device fabrication. LC molecules in the device can be driven by only applying the voltage on the CPW electrode due to the ITO film as a floating electrode. Their transmission properties up to 65GHz are measured and also transmission change by applying the voltage is investigated for various LC materials.

With distribution automation system (DAS), switches of the distribution network are remotely monitored and controlled by computers installed at the control center in sales offices. Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO) has completed the installation of DAS to all of its sale offices in order to operate the distribution network most effectively. However, the configuration of DAS computer system was composed of a fixed set of one main computer and one console for the operator at its introduction stage with limited flexibility and expansibility. Therefore, TEPCO has developed its own DAS software operating on generally used hardware. The Advanced DAS acquires the information of the distribution network such as current, voltage, I/sub 0/ and V/sub 0/ by the newly developed sensor built-in switches and transmits the data to the computer system of the control center by advanced remote terminal unit in order to implement more reliable quality management of power supply.

The use of systematic terminology for implant prostheses can simplify communication within the scientific community. However, a review of the current literature demonstrates the lack of uniformity in this field. It is the purpose of this manuscript to suggest uniform terminology based on conventional prosthodontic terms that will simplify communication in the profession.

In this series of articles, the faculty of the University of Southern California New Odontic Seminar have taken the 25 years of documented treatment of sample patient "A.K." and used it as a foundation on which to base discussion of the concepts and technology that have developed in prosthodontic treatment planning. Each of the contributing authors was asked, "What are your thoughts retrospectively if you were to treat the patient A.K. in your practice today?" And, since all dentists are challenged with evidence-based treatment planning, each author was also asked "On what evidence in the literature do you base your treatment planning for patients who need prosthetic therapy?" Dentistry's experience with long-term success of endodontics, periodontics, and implant dentistry is expressed in the presentations discussing when an implant may be better suited for a prosthetic abutment than a restored tooth.

The design of a resonant DC link inverter without a clamp circuit has been a long standing problem; namely, when the inverter input current decreases due to the voltage vector change, a high peak voltage is generated in the DC link, and the peak current which flows in the freewheel diode of the inverter increases. In this paper, a novel control method which enables the resonant DC link inverter to suppress the high peak voltage is proposed. Experiments and simulations show that these methods can suppress the high peak voltage generation associated with induction motor drives. >

We have developed a high performance drive system which has satisfied high efficiency, small size and high productivity. The traction motor is a simple structure with a cylindrical magnet using a silicone glue. For the field weakening control, the optimal armature reactance Xd is realized. To minimize a current, the torque control method without the voltage margin is adopted. The PWM control method which uses the voltage of a battery effectively is also adopted. In this paper, details of the optimal design of a surface permanent magnet motor and control techniques are explained, and specifications of the system and testing results are described.

The viruses were isolated from the blood of sentinel cattle and Culicoides biting midges in the Kyushu district, southwestern Japan, in 1999 and identified by neutralization tests as Peaton (PEA) viruses. Before this study, PEA virus had been isolated in Australia only. The nucleotide identity of the nucleocapsid (N) protein encoded by the S segment ranged from 91.1 to 91.6% between the Australian and Japanese strains. A phylogenetic analysis of the N protein sequence revealed that the PEA virus strains are closely related to Aino (AIN) virus and suggested reassortment events for PEA and AIN viruses.

Acute allograft glomerulopathy (AAG) characterized by hypercellularity, enlargement of endothelial cells, infiltration of glomeruli by mononuclear cells and webs of PAS-positive material has been reported as an unusual but distinct form of acute rejection in kidney transplant recipients. We present a case of persistent AAG proven by serial biopsies. The patient was 53 years old when she received kidney transplantation from her mother. The immunosuppressants were methylprednisolone, azathioprine and FK506. She developed several acute rejections and received antirejection therapy. The patient transferred to our hospital 15 months after transplantation. Serum creatinine was 2.11 mg/dL. The level of serum creatinine was gradually elevated from 2.11 mg/dL to 3.09 mg/dL. Graft biopsy, performed 16.5 months after transplantation, represented prominent intraglomerular infiltration of mononuclear cells, segmental thickening of glomerular basement membrane (GBM) with double contour, grade 1 tubulitis, marked accumulation of mononuclear cells in peritubular capillaries and margination of mononuclear cells in a small artery. It was diagnosed as acute allograft glomerulopathy (AAG). Intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy, discontinuation of FK506 and administration of cyclosporin (CYA) resulted in decrease of serum creatinine. To evaluate histological evolution of AAG we performed two subsequent biopsies over 3 yr. Severe glomerulitis persisted as a prominent feature 8 months later and still existed 53.4 months after transplantation with decreased severity. The extent of GBM reduplication also decreased, but the percentage of glomerular sclerosis increased gradually. Multi-layering of basement membrane of peritubular capillary and interstitial fibrosis also increased. The prominence of infiltration of mononuclear cells in peritubular capillary was unchanged. At the last follow-up, i.e. 71 months after transplantation, her serum creatinine was 1.34 mg/dL. Neither proteinuria nor haematuria was observed. We consider that our immunosuppressive treatment has been successful so far, because the patient is still maintaining stable graft function since the transplantation over 6 yr ago. It is thus suggested that AAG per se probably has no influence on acute aggravation of graft function, but AAG and capillaritis in peritubular capillaries may cause an evolution of chronic allograft nephropathy, resulting in a slowly progressive deterioration of graft function.

The genomic DNA of four Autographa californica multinucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) variants isolated from Galleria mellonella, Spodoptera exigua, Spodoptera litura and Xestia c-nigrum was analyzed in comparison with the AcMNPV E2 strain. Restriction endonuclease analysis revealed a deletion and an insertion in collinear regions of the four variants. Polymerase chain reaction analysis indicated that, in the four variants, the deletion occurred in the region corresponding to AcMNPV C6 ORF86 (pnk/pnl). Also the insertion, with a length of approximately 1.1 kb, was commonly identified in the fragments corresponding to the PstI-J fragment (18.5 m.u.-21.2 m.u.) of AcMNPV E2. Sequencing analysis of the variant from S. litura showed that the insertion contains an additional open reading frame encoding 322 amino acids between homologues of AcMNPV ORF30 and ORF31 (the superoxide dismutase gene). This ORF has 82.8% amino acid identity to Bombyx mori NPV T3 ORF 22 (bro-a, one of the baculovirus repeated ORFs) and thus, it was named Splt-bro-a. Southern blot hybridization study indicated that the other three variants also contain Splt-bro-a homologue. In addition, the labeled Splt-bro-a gene weakly hybridized to the PstI-D fragment (99.0 m.u.-8.0 m.u.) of AcMNPV E2. This fragment contains AcMNPV ORF2, a member of bro family. The signal was also observed on the corresponding fragment of the four variants. This result suggested that two bro genes are present in the four variants, although AcMNPV E2 and C6 are known to contain a single bro gene.

We present a case of fever of unknown origin and life-threatening stomatitis developed about 60 months after renal transplantation. He was 15 yr old at the transplantation. Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections were not evident. Fever and stomatitis were resistant to acyclovir and to any anti-bacterial or anti-fungal treatment. Graft biopsy revealed a small focus of acute vascular rejection, but the findings were not severe enough to be an etiology of the fever in this case. The administration of cyclosporine (CYA) was stopped 19 d before graftectomy, but the clinical picture was unchanged. Fever and stomatitis was resolved immediately after graftectomy and the discontinuation of immunosuppressants such as mizoribine (MZ) and prednisolone. Pathological changes of the graft included chronic transplant glomerulopathy, acute glomerulitis, and lymphocyte infiltration in peritubular capillaries. Thus we suppose that immunosuppressants were the cause of both fever and stomatitis in this case. We speculate that a fever in this case might be due to the immunosuppressant itself, i.e., CYA or MZ, or viral infection probably herpes-simplex virus infection. It is probably the immunosuppressive state per se that may cause the resistance of his muco-cutaneous lesion to anti-viral agent.

A case of late onset hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) associated with cyclosporine (CYA) is described in this report. A 50-yr-old man with end-stage renal failure due to immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy received a renal transplant from his wife. Human leucocyte antigen was completely unmatched. Immunosuppressant was a combination of prednisolone, azathioprine, and CYA. He was discharged 1 month after transplantation, with no episode of acute rejection. Twenty-one months after transplantation, his platelet count and hematocrit began to decrease and lactate dehydrogenase began to increase. Graft biopsy showed thrombotic microangiopathy and recurrent IgA nephropathy. Graft function was rapidly deteriorated and methylprednisolone pulse therapy was not effective. Twenty-five months after transplantation, he returned to a regular hemodialysis. Hemolysis was immediately improved after a reduction of the dose of CYA to 50 mg/d. The trough level of CYA was less than 200 ng/mL in most periods of his clinical course. Blood pressure was high throughout the clinical course. Although acute vascular rejection or malignant hypertension could also cause a thrombotic microangiopathy, CYA was most likely a cause of HUS in the present case because of the following reasons: neither anti-acute rejection therapy nor an adequate control of his blood pressure was effective in improving clinical features of HUS; hemolysis and thrombocytopenia disappeared immediately after the reduction of the dose of CYA to 50 mg/d. It has been reported that HUS carried poor prognosis only when occurring shortly after transplantation in cadaver kidney recipients. The present transplant was from a living donor and HUS occurred 21 months after transplantation and was severe enough to result in graft loss. High blood pressure might be one of the predisposing factors of HUS associated with CYA in the present case. CYA should be stopped and other alternative immunosuppressants should be given in cases of acute graft deterioration with hemolysis and thrombocytopenia, irrespective of the interval from transplantation, CYA dose, or CYA trough level.

To clarify the contribution of the inhibin-like immunoreactivity (inhibin-LI) produced by adrenal glands to the total circulating levels of inhibin-LI, we measured serum inhibin-LI in normal and hypogonadal subjects under ACTH-loading or dexamethasone-loading condition. The mean basal concentration of inhibin-LI in the peripheral serum of the hypogonadal cases was 3.6 +/- 1.3 IU/ml (mean +/- SD, n = 5), which corresponded to 19.5 +/- 5.8% of that of normal controls matched for age and sex. The low levels of inhibin-LI in hypogonadal subjects (n = 7) rose significantly (3.6 +/- 1.1 vs 8.1 +/- 1.7 IU/ml, p0.001) after the administration of synthetic 1-24ACTH (40 units/day intramuscular injection) for 2 days, while the levels of serum inhibin-LI were not increased in two cases of Addison's disease with hypogonadism after the administration of ACTH. After the oral administration of a low dose of dexamethasone (1 mg) the serum inhibin-LI level in normal subjects (eight males and eight females) decreased significantly (male, 16.2 +/- 3.3 vs 14.5 +/- 4.1 IU/ml; female, 12.9 +/- 6.3 vs 10.8 +/- 5.6 IU/ml; p0.01 each) without significant change in the levels of serum gonadotropin (LH and FSH) and those of gonadal steroid (testosterone or estradiol). These results indicate that a small; but significant amount of inhibin-LI is secreted from the adrenal gland and circulating in vivo, and that the proportion of adrenal-derived inhibin-LI is much higher in patients with hypogonadism.

A reverse-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), in which an antibody is sandwiched by antigens, was established for the titration of antibodies to verocytotoxins (VT) in human and animal sera. This assay has two advantages over a conventional indirect ELISA: (i) higher specificity and sensitivity and (ii) the ability to comparably titrate antibodies from different species. The VT1 (Shiga-like toxin 1) antibody-positive rates were 5% in 202 normal adult humans and 99% in 93 normal cattle at a dairy farm. This ELISA is most suitable for seroepidemiologic studies of infections with VT-producing Escherichia coli in humans and various animal species.

The Spodoptera exigua multinucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) was inoculated to eight lepidopteran cell lines derived from Spodoptera exigua (Se301), Spodoptera frugiperda (SF21AEII), Spodoptera littoralis (CLS-79), Spodoptera litura (SpLi-221), Pseudaletia separata (LeSe-11), Trichoplusia ni (hi-5), Plutella xylostella (PXL/C) and Bombyx mori (BmN4). The productive infection of SeMNPV was observed only in Se301 cells. However, a dot-blot hybridization analysis revealed that SeMNPV DNA replicated in five non-permissive cell lines: SF21AEII, CLS-79, SpLi-221, hi-5 and BmN4. In addition, the virus-infected hi-5 and BmN4 cells displayed morphological changes. In contrast, CLS-79 cells inoculated with SeMNPV showed membrane blebbing at 20 hrs post inoculation (p.i.) and fragmentation of genomic DNA. All that indicated that the infected CLS-79 cells underwent apoptosis. These findings indicate that the SeMNPV replication was restricted at various points in dependence upon each cell line.

The Autographa californica multinucleocapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) has a broad host range among Lepidoptera. In contrast, the Spodoptera exigua MNPV (SeMNPV) can replicate efficiently only in S. exigua larvae or S. exigua-derived cell lines. In this study, we examined the coinfection of S. exigua Se301 and Spodoptera frugiperda IPLB-SF21AEII (Sf21) cell lines with SeMNPV and AcMNPV recombinant (Ac360-501beta-gal) which was constructed for expression of beta-galactosidase under control of the polyhedrin promoter. Coinfection led to the restriction as the level of late gene expression, nonoccluded virus production, and DNA replication of Ac360-501beta-gal in both Se301 and Sf21 cell lines. In contrast, Ac360-501beta-gal supported the SeMNPV replication in Sf21 cells. Occurrence of recombinants, between Ac360-501beta-gal and SeMNPV, with expanded host range was not observed in coinfected Sf21 cells. This suggests that Ac360-501beta-gal supports the SeMNPV replication through trans-activation.
