We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and $\rm ^3He$ analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient $C_{y,y}$ for $p$-$\rm ^3He$ elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with $\Delta$-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the $\rm ^3 He$ binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the $NN$ potentials and rather small $\Delta$-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that $p$-$\rm ^3He$ scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We performed the experiment of p–^{3}3He scattering at 65 MeV by using polarized proton beams and the newly constructed polarized ^{3}3He target. The proton analyzing power A_{y}Ay, the ^{3}3He analyzing power A_{y}^{T}AyT, and the spin correlation coefficient C_{yy}Cyy were measured. In the conference, the experimental data were compared with the rigorous numerical calculations based on various nuclear potentials. Large discrepancies between the experimental data and the calculations were found in the A_{y}^{T}AyT and the {C_{yy}}Cyy at the backward angles.

To increase the beam intensity of cyclotrons used for producing radionuclides, beam loss during extraction must be reduced. Extraction efficiency is limited by the beam parameters in front of the deflector, especially angular distribution. Computer simulation of the second harmonic mode for 18 MeV protons, which is frequently used, has been carried out to understand beam behavior in a cyclotron. The extraction efficiency is determined by the width of the angular distribution of particles in the phase space plot at the deflector. An effective method to reduce the width is to shorten the bunch at injection. The simulation shows that the bunch phase length at injection must be ⩽30° to realize a 30 μA extraction beam current and satisfy the deflector heat limit of 200 W.

We performed the measurement of the cross section and the proton analyzing power \(A_y\) for p–\(^3\)He elastic scattering with a 65 MeV polarized proton beam at Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. The proton analyzing power \(A_y\) data are compared with the theoretical calculations based on the nucleon–nucleon potential (INOY04).

The \(^3\)He analyzing powers for \(p{-}^3\)He elastic scattering with the polarized \(^3\)He target have been measured at \(70~\mathrm {MeV}\). \(^3\)He polarization which was calibrated by the electron paramagnetic resonance method was achieved to \(50\%\). In the conference the data were compared with the theoretical calculations based on the modern nucleon–nucleon potentials. Large discrepancies between the theoretical calculations and the experimental data were found at the angles where the \(^3\)He analyzing power takes minimum and maximum.

A singly charged ion source (SCIS) has been designed using a newly developed three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) code. The SCIS is to be used in an isotope separation on-line (ISOL) system that provides 11C ions for heavy-ion cancer therapy with simultaneous verification of the dose distribution using positron emission tomography. The SCIS uses low-energy electron beams to produce singly charged carbon ions efficiently and maintain a high vacuum in the ISOL system. Because the SCIS has to realize a production efficiency of 1% if its carbon ions are to be used in the ISOL system, a suitable design for the SCIS was investigated by using the developed PIC code to study the beam trajectories of the electrons and extracted ions. The simulation results show that hollow electron beams are produced in the designed SCIS resulting in a high effective electron current. The results also predict that the designed SCIS would realize ion-production efficiencies (IPEs) of eSCIS ≃ 6.7% for CO2+ production from CO2 gas and eSCIS ≃ 0.1% for C+ production from CH4 gas. Moreover, to examine the validity of the developed code and confirm that the SCIS was able to be designed appropriately, the space-charge-limited current of the electron gun and the total IPE obtained by adding the IPEs of each ion were compared between the experiment and the simulation.

International audience; Differential cross sections of p–6He elastic scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an incident energy of 200 A MeV, covering the high momentum transfer region of 1.7–2.7 fm−1. The sensitivity of the elastic scattering at low and high momentum transfers to the density distribution was investigated quantitatively using relativistic impulse approximation calculations. In the high momentum transfer region, where the present data were taken, the differential cross section has an order of magnitude higher sensitivity to the inner part of the 6He density relative to the peripheral part (15:1). This feature makes the obtained data valuable for the deduction of the inner part of the 6He density. The data were compared to a set of calculations assuming different proton and neutron density profiles of 6He. The data are well reproduced by the calculation assuming almost the same profiles of proton and neutron densities around the center of 6He, and a proton profile reproducing the known point-proton radius of 1.94 fm. This finding is consistent with the assumption that the 6He nucleus consists of a rigid α-like core with a two-neutron halo.

The National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST) manages various types of ion sources for research and development in the fields of life sciences, medical and industrial applications, and fusion energy science. The QST is currently developing on electron cyclotron resonance ion sources, negative ion sources (ion sources for fusion and for tandem accelerators), ion sources for radioactive beams, laser ion sources, and miscellaneous ion sources. Its intra- and inter-institutional collaborations make QST a promising platform for future ion source technologies.

The ion-production efficiency of a newly developed singly charged ion source (SCIS) has been investigated to discuss the possibility of it being used in an isotope separation on-line system that provides 11C ions for heavy-ion cancer therapy with simultaneous verification of the irradiation field using positron emission tomography. The SCIS uses a low-energy hollow electron beam to produce singly charged carbon ions efficiently. To deliver sufficient 11C ions to the treatment room from a limited amount of 11C molecules, which are produced from a boron compound target and proton-beam irradiation via the 11B(p,n)11C reaction, the SCIS must have high ion-production efficiency. To realize this high efficiency, the SCIS was designed using a three-dimensional particle-in-cell code in previous work. With the fabricated SCIS, we performed experiments to measure the efficiency of producing CO2+ ions from nonradioactive 12CO2 molecules and C+ ions from nonradioactive 12CH4 molecules. We found that the SCIS achieved efficiencies of eC+=4×10−3 (0.4%) for C+ production and eCO2+=0.107 (10.7%) for CO2+ production.

A new singly charged ion source using electron impact ionization has been developed to realize an isotope separation on-line system for simultaneous positron emission tomography imaging and heavy-ion cancer therapy using radioactive (11)C ion beams. Low-energy electron beams are used in the electron impact ion source to produce singly charged ions. Ionization efficiency was calculated in order to decide the geometric parameters of the ion source and to determine the required electron emission current for obtaining high ionization efficiency. Based on these considerations, the singly charged ion source was designed and fabricated. In testing, the fabricated ion source was found to have favorable performance as a singly charged ion source.

We report on a new in situ laser spectroscopy technique using superfluid helium and a highly energetic ion beam. In taking advantage of superfluid helium as a host matrix for laser spectroscopy, we were able to develop an extremely low background detection system. The first demonstration using 85Rb31+ ion beam (66 MeV/nucleon) accelerated at the RIKEN accelerator facility shows improvement of detection limit by two orders of magnitude. A quantitative evaluation of Rb atoms in the observation region enables an analysis of their optical absorption cross-section in superfluid helium from the fluorescence intensity dependence on ion-beam intensity and applied laser power.

A (11)C molecular production/separation system (CMPS) has been developed as part of an isotope separation on line system for simultaneous positron emission tomography imaging and heavy-ion cancer therapy using radioactive (11)C ion beams. In the ISOL system, (11)CH4 molecules will be produced by proton irradiation and separated from residual air impurities and impurities produced during the irradiation. The CMPS includes two cryogenic traps to separate specific molecules selectively from impurities by using vapor pressure differences among the molecular species. To investigate the fundamental performance of the CMPS, we performed separation experiments with non-radioactive (12)CH4 gases, which can simulate the chemical characteristics of (11)CH4 gases. We investigated the separation of CH4 molecules from impurities, which will be present as residual gases and are expected to be difficult to separate because the vapor pressure of air molecules is close to that of CH4. We determined the collection/separation efficiencies of the CMPS for various amounts of air impurities and found desirable operating conditions for the CMPS to be used as a molecular separation device in our ISOL system.

SUMMARYIn May 2011, an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producingEscherichia coli(STEC) O157 was reported from Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Investigations, including a case-control study, revealed that the outbreak was linked to two varieties of rice cakes produced by a local manufacturer between 2 and 7 May. Active and passive surveillance identified 136 suspected cases, 142 confirmed cases, 26 asymptomatic cases, and 25 secondary cases. While no environmental samples taken from the manufacturing premises tested positive for STEC, other than a stool sample taken from one employee, on-site and epidemiological investigations indicated that STEC was introduced during the manufacturing process of rice cakes rather than through contamination of raw materials. This was the first reported outbreak of STEC associated with cakes and confectionery in Japan, which indicates that contamination and outbreaks of STEC can occur in any food unless proper precautions are taken.

A fragment separator at heavy ion accelerator facilities is a versatile instrument to provide wide variety of radioactive isotope (RI) beams. However, more than 99.99% of precious Rl-ions are simply dumped in the slits or elsewhere in the fragment separator. A novel concept to restore such Rl-ions for parasitic slow Rl-beams is proposed. Installation of a laser ionization gas catcher in the vicinity of the first or second focal point of the fragment separator enables to collect dead isotopes in the slits. Compressive creep tests have been performed on separated, free-standing, air plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings (zirconia doped with 7-8 wt% yttria) under constant load in the temperature range RT-1150°C. A small creep effect was observed in the temperature range RT-950°C and an increasingly larger effect in the range 950°C-1150°C. At 1150°C a permanent strain of 2.8% occurred after 10 h at 80 MPa. The macroscopic apparent elastic modulus of the TBC (stiffness) increased during that specific deformation from 25 to 120 GPa. The effect of mechanical loading on stiffness at high temperature is much more pronounced than densification by sintering during isothermal heat treatment. Microstructural changes related to deformation and creep were studied by in situ observation in the SEM as well as by comparing the SEM images before and after deformation using an image correlation program.

This paper deals with the characterization of mechanical properties of impacted morsellized cancellous allograft (IMCA) produced by dynamic compaction of allograft femoral heads ground by commercially available bone mills, i.e. rotating rasp and reciprocating type bone mills. Various ranges and profiles of particle size in the graft aggregates were obtained using these bone mills, and the effect of number of compaction as well as the distribution of particle sizes on the mechanical properties of IMCA under quasistatic compression and shear loading conditions was discussed. The morsellized cancellous allograft prepared by the reciprocating type bone mill showed a broad distribution of particle sizes, and gave IMCA superior mechanical properties to the graft with a more uniform size distribution, or prepared by the rotating rasp type bone mills. The increase of number of compaction also improved the mechanical properties of IMCA in compression.

Radio-isotope (RI) beam experiments have extended the horizon of nuclear physics to nuclei far from the stability line. Nuclear reactions such as (p,p), (p,d), (p,pp), (p,pn) etc. with spin degrees of freedom are expected to provide rich information on nuclear structure of unstable nuclei. However, the RI beam experiment utilizes the inverse kinematics and therefore it involves detection of low energy proton or deuteron which is emitted to angles nearly 90° in the lab. system. A conventional polarized proton target system is inconvenient for such experiments since it requires a high magnetic field (≥ 2.5T) as well as a very low temperature (≤ 1K). We are developing a new spin polarized solid proton target (SPSPT) system [1] which can be operated in a low magnetic field (~ 0.3T) at a high temperature (77K).

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze clinical impact factors on the survival rate, and to acquire basic clinical data for the diagnosis of oral cancer, for a determination of the treatment plan with long-term survival in oral cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Through a retrospective review of the medical records, the factors for long-term survival rate were analyzed. Thirty-seven patients, among patient database with oral cancer treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Pusan National University Hospital within a period from March 1998 to March 2008, were selected within the study criteria and were followed-up for more than 5 years. The analyzed factors were gender, age, drinking, smoking, primary tumor site, type of cancer, TNM stage, recurrence of affected region, and metastasis of cervical lymph node. The 5-year survival rate on the impact factors was calculated statistically using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: By classification of clinical TNM at the 1st visit, therewere 11 (29.7%) cases for stage I, 11 (29.7%) cases for stage II, 3 (8.1%) cases for stage III, and 12 (32.5%) cases for stage IV. The5-year survival rate of total oral cancer patients after the operation were 75.7%, pathological TNM stage related 5-year survival rate were as follows: stage I 90.0%, stage II 81.8%, stage III 100% and stage IV 45.5%; in which the survival rate difference by each stage was significantly observed. The recurrence of cervical lymph node was the significant impact factor for the survival rate, because only 30.0% the survival rate in recurrent cases existed. During the follow-up, there were 15 (40.5%) patients with confirmed recurrence, and the 5-year survival rate of these patients was decreased as 46.7%. Conclusion: The classification of clinical and pathological TNM stage, local recurrence after surgery, and metastasis of cervical lymph node after surgery were analyzed as the 3 most significant factors.
