Abstract

We present a new measurement of the Λ4H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight K− + 4He → Λ4H + π0 reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the γ-ray energy decayed from π0. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from (K−, π−) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the Λ4H lifetime, τ(HΛ4)=206±8(stat.)±12(syst.)ps, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton (Λ3H) using the same setup in the near future.

Abstract

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34 GHz to 448 GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89–224 GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166–448 GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5 K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100 mK. We provide an overview of the concept design and the remaining specific challenges that we have to face in order to achieve the scientific goals of LiteBIRD.

Abstract

Abstract Background Long-term evolution of sex chromosomes is a dynamic process shaped by gene gain and gene loss. Sex chromosome gene traffic has been studied in XY and ZW systems but no detailed analyses have been carried out for haploid phase UV sex chromosomes. Here, we explore sex-specific sequences of seven brown algal species to understand the dynamics of the sex-determining region (SDR) gene content across 100 million years of evolution. Results A core set of sex-linked genes is conserved across all the species investigated, but we also identify modifications of both the U and the V SDRs that occurred in a lineage-specific fashion. These modifications involve gene loss, gene gain and relocation of genes from the SDR to autosomes. Evolutionary analyses suggest that the SDR genes are evolving rapidly and that this is due to relaxed purifying selection. Expression analysis indicates that genes that were acquired from the autosomes have been retained in the SDR because they confer a sex-specific role in reproduction. By examining retroposed genes in Saccharina japonica, we demonstrate that UV sex chromosomes have generated a disproportionate number of functional orphan retrogenes compared with autosomes. Movement of genes out of the UV sex chromosome could be a means to compensate for gene loss from the non-recombining region, as has been suggested for Y-derived retrogenes in XY sexual systems. Conclusion This study provides the first analysis of gene traffic in a haploid UV system and identifies several features of general relevance to the evolution of sex chromosomes.

Abstract

In the last decade, heavy-ion based experiments (HypHI, STAR and ALICEi ) announced surprisingly short lifetime for 3 ΛH mesonic weak decay (MWD), which is difficult to interpret given the fact that 3 ΛH is a very loosely bound system. It will be very interesting to study this issue with a different experimental approach. We propose a direct measurement for 3 ΛH hypernucleus MWD lifetime with ∼10% precision as J-PARC E73 experiment; 4 ΛH hypernucleus lifetime will also be measured as a feasibility test for our experimental approach. In this proceeding, we will introduce the experimental method and the current status of E73 experiment.

Abstract

et al., Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature., This work is supported by NASA under grant no. 80NSSC18K0132.

10. Eic1 links Mis18 with the CCAN/Mis6/Ctf19 complex to promote CENP-A assembly

Abstract

CENP-A chromatin forms the foundation for kinetochore assembly. Replication-independent incorporation of CENP-A at centromeres depends on its chaperone HJURPScm3, and Mis18 in vertebrates and fission yeast. The recruitment of Mis18 and HJURPScm3 to centromeres is cell cycle regulated. Vertebrate Mis18 associates with Mis18BP1KNL2, which is critical for the recruitment of Mis18 and HJURPScm3. We identify two novel fission yeast Mis18-interacting proteins (Eic1 and Eic2), components of the Mis18 complex. Eic1 is essential to maintain Cnp1CENP-A at centromeres and is crucial for kinetochore integrity; Eic2 is dispensable. Eic1 also associates with Fta7CENP-Q/Okp1, Cnl2Nkp2 and Mal2CENP-O/Mcm21, components of the constitutive CCAN/Mis6/Ctf19 complex. No Mis18BP1KNL2 orthologue has been identified in fission yeast, consequently it remains unknown how the key Cnp1CENP-A loading factor Mis18 is recruited. Our findings suggest that Eic1 serves a function analogous to that of Mis18BP1KNL2, thus representing the functional counterpart of Mis18BP1KNL2 in fission yeast that connects with a module within the CCAN/Mis6/Ctf19 complex to allow the temporally regulated recruitment of the Mis18/Scm3HJURP Cnp1CENP-A loading factors. The novel interactions identified between CENP-A loading factors and the CCAN/Mis6/Ctf19 complex are likely to also contribute to CENP-A maintenance in other organisms.

11. Mechanical strength and millimeter-wave transmission spectrum of stacked sapphire plates bonded by sodium silicate solution

Abstract

A polarization modulator unit for a low-frequency telescope in LiteBIRD employs an achromatic half-wave plate (AHWP). It consists of five-layer a-cut sapphire plates, which are stacked based on a Pancharatnam recipe. In this way, the retardance of the AHWP is a half-wave over the bandwidth of 34 - 161 GHz. The diameter of a single sapphire plate is about 500mm and the thickness is about 5 mm. When a large diameter AHWP is used for a space mission, it is important for the AHWP to survive launch vibration. A preliminary study indicates that the five-layer-stacked HWP has a risk of breakage at the launch unless the 5 layers are glued together and mechanically treated as one disk. In this paper, we report our investigation using a sodium silicate solution which can bond between sapphire plates. This technique has been previously investigated as a candidate cryogenic glue for a mirror material, including sapphire, of the gravitational wave detector, LIGO and KAGRA. We experimentally studied the mechanical strength of the bonded interface for two different surface conditions, polished and unpolished. We demonstrated the tensile and shear strength of above 20MPa for samples with a polished surface, respectively. We also identified that samples glued on a polished surface show higher strength than unpolished ones by a factor of 2 for tensile and 18 for shear strength. We searched for any optical effects, e.g. extra gap or absorption by the bonding interface, by measuring the millimeter-wave transmission spectra in 90-140 GHz. We did not find any optical effect caused by the bonded interface within 2% error in transmittance that is originated from the measurement system.

Abstract

LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. Abstract

Background:Symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are potentially influenced by exercise load and meteorological change, and often vary from day to day, especially in unstable condition of RA. Patients with RA not infrequently experience worsening of joint symptoms when the load on the joint, such as walking and doing housework, exceeds a moderate range. However, the worsening of joint symptoms is often not observed in the midst of the loading of the joint, but often becomes apparent after a few hours or days.Objectives:To elucidate the relationship between smartphone- and smartwatch-acquired daily objective data (barometric pressures, steps, and activity) and daily subjective patient reported outcomes of RA.Methods:A smartphone (iPhone 8) and a wristband-type smartwatch (Fitbit Versa 2) were lent to each patient for free. A mobile app was developed and installed into the smartphones to collect patients’ daily subjective RA symptoms including Pt-P-VAS (patient-pain-visual analogue scale), Pt-G-VAS (pt-general-VAS), PtTJCount(68)(patient self-determined tender joint count among 68 joints), PtTJCount(28), PtSJCount(66)(patient self-determined swollen joint count among 66 joints), PtSJCount(28). Also, the smartwatch data and physicians’ assessment were collected from the same subject. Physicians’ and patients’ assessment of TJC, SJC, and G-VAS was independently performed without seeing each other’s assessment.We conducted a simple linear regression analysis with outcome variables of Pt-P-VAS, Pt-G-VAS, PtTJCount(68), PtTJCount(28), PtSJCount(66), and PtSJCount(28). The independent variables included smartphone-acquired daily steps and barometric pressure of the reported day and the previous day, and smartwatch-acquired minutes of “lightly active (1-3 METs equivalent)”, “fairly active(3-6 METs equivalent)”, and “very active(>6 METs equivalent)” of the reported day and previous day. We defined low barometric pressure as below 1000 hPa. The level of activity was measured by the smartwatch. Patients were blinded to daily barometric pressure data and their daily active time when the patients answered daily symptom questions on the smartphones.Results:A total of five patients were enrolled. At baseline, mean (± standard deviation (SD)) age was 50.8±14.8 years; all patients were females; mean disease duration was 6.6±4.9 years; mean SDAI was 18.6±25.5; mean DAS28-CRP was 3.23±1.85; mean morning stiffness was 134±116 min; mean HAQ-DI was 0.7±0.9. Mean observation period was 77.8 days. Low barometric pressure was associated with bad health conditions (high Pt-G-VAS, Pt-P-VAS, and SJCount). Moreover, longer very active time in the previous day (“veryactive_1” in the Figure 1) was associated with bad health condition (high SJCount). Many steps were associated with good health conditions (low Pt-G-VAS, Pt-P-VAS, and SJCount).Figure 1.Conclusion:High barometric pressure was associated with good health conditions, and longer very active time in the previous day was associated with bad health condition. Barometric pressure data and physical activity data acquired by mobile digital devices may predict the change in RA symptoms. Abstract

Despite the conserved essential function of centromeres, centromeric DNA itself is not conserved1–4. The histone-H3 variant, CENP-A, is the epigenetic mark that specifies centromere identity5–8. Paradoxically, CENP-A normally assembles on particular sequences at specific genomic locations. To gain insight into the specification of complex centromeres we took an evolutionary approach, fully assembling genomes and centromeres of related fission yeasts. Centromere domain organization, but not sequence, is conserved betweenSchizosaccharomyces pombe, S. octosporusandS. cryophiluswith a central CENP-ACnp1domain flanked by heterochromatic outer-repeat regions. Conserved syntenic clusters of tRNA genes and 5S rRNA genes occur across the centromeres ofS. octosporusandS. cryophilus, suggesting conserved function. Remarkably, non-homologous centromere central-core sequences fromS. octosporusare recognized inS. pombe, resulting in cross-species establishment of CENP-ACnp1chromatin and functional kinetochores. Therefore, despite the lack of sequence conservation,Schizosaccharomycescentromere DNA possesses intrinsic conserved properties that promote assembly of CENP-A chromatin. Thus, centromere DNA can be recognized and function over unprecedented evolutionary timescales.

Abstract

We here described the antioxidant effects of carnitine supplementation on 14-3-3 protein isoforms in the aged rat hippocampus detected using the fully automated two-dimensional chip gel electrophoresis system (Auto2D). This system was easy and convenient to use, and the resolution obtained was more sensitive and higher than that of conventional two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). We separated and identified five isoforms of the 14-3-3 protein (beta/alpha, gamma, epsilon, zeta/delta, and eta) using the Auto2D system. We then examined the antioxidant effects of carnitine supplementation on the protein profiles of the cytosolic fraction in the aged rat hippocampus, demonstrating that carnitine supplementation suppressed the oxidation of methionine residues in these isoforms. Since methionine residues are easily oxidized to methionine sulfoxide, the convenient and high-resolution 2-D PAGE system can be available to analyze methionine oxidation avoiding artifactual oxidation. We showed here that the Auto2D system was a very useful tool for studying antioxidant effects through proteomic analysis of protein oxidation.

Abstract

A new species of Leptostraca, Nebalia terazakii sp. n. is described and figured. The species was sampled from the coral reefs of Pulau Payar Marine Park, Langkawi, Malaysia. There are 32 existing species of Nebalia but Nebalia terazakii sp. n. can be distinguished from the other known species of Nebalia by the following combination of characters: the rostrum is 1.89 times as long as wide and the eyes have no dorsal papilla or lobes. Article 4 of the antennular peduncle has one short thick distal spine. The proximal article of the endopod of maxilla 2 is shorter than the distal, a feature peculiar to Nebalia terazakii sp. n., the exopod of maxilla 2 is longer than article 1 of the endopod, the posterior dorsal borders of the pleonites 6 to 7 are provided with distally sharp denticles, anal plate with prominent lateral shoulder and finally, the terminal seta of the caudal rami is 1.17 times the length of the entire rami.

Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the protective effects of oral administration of milk fermented with a Lactococcus strain against influenza virus (IFV) infection in a mouse model. Methods and Results: Milk fermented with exopolysaccharide-producing Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris (L. cremoris) FC was orally administered to BALB/c mice for 12 days. Mice were intranasally infected with IFV A/New Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1) on day 8, and survival was determined for 14 days after IFV infection. Survival rate and body weight loss after IFV infection in the L. cremoris FC fermented milk-administered group were significantly improved compared with those in the control group. In the unfermented milk-administered group, survival rate was not improved, whereas body weight loss was slightly improved compared with that in the control group. The mean virus titre in the lung of the L. cremoris FC fermented milk-administered group 3 days after infection was significantly decreased compared with that in the control group. Conclusions: These results suggest that oral administration of milk fermented with L. cremoris FC protects mice against IFV infection. Significance and Impact of the Study: These results demonstrate that oral administration of milk fermented with exopolysaccharide-producing Lactococcus strains might protect host animals against IFV infection.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out Spinocerebellar Ataxias (SCA) by genetic analysis from those patients presenting with Parkinsonism in the Neurology department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. A sample of about 5ml blood was collected by venipuncture in EDTA tube after having informed consent from each patients and healthy individual, with due Institutional Ethical committee approval for genetic study of 7 healthy people and 9 patients. The neurological disorder along with a complete physical and/or psychological, as well as family history and demographic data was recorded with a prescribed questionnaire by the neurologists of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Extraction of genomic DNA from the venous blood using Flexi Gene DNA kit (Qiagen, Japan) was performed in Faculty of Veterinary Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The extracted DNA was stored, accumulated and then were sent to Division of Clinical Genetics, Department of Medical Genetics, Osaka University Medical School, Suita, Osaka 565 0871, Japan for PCR and further analysis. PCR amplification of the CAG repeat was performed for the SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, SCA6 loci using primers SCA1N-F1 and SCA1N-R1, SCA2-F1 and SCA2-R1, MJDF1 and MJDR1, SCA6-F1 and SCA6-R1, respectively. SCA1 PCR of both healthy individual and suspected Parkinsons Disease (PD) patients DNA was found 250 bp (no. of CAG repeats=36). SCA2 PCR products reveal the DNA products of about 150 bp (no. of CAG repeats=23) except one patient that was suspected and it was sequenced and revealed 175bp (no. of CAG repeats=30). SCA3 PCR product size of both healthy individual and patient DNA was within 250 (no. of CAG repeats=11) to 300 bp (no. of CAG repeats=28) except one patient which was about 320 bp and its CAG repeats was about 34. SCA6 PCR product size of both healthy individual and patient DNA was about 150 bp (no. of CAG repeats=16).

Abstract

We investigated the growth of GaAs 1− x Sb x ( x =1.0, 0.82, 0.69, 0.44, 0.0) layers on Si (0 0 1) substrates using AlSb as a buffer layer. Epilayers were grown as a function of As beam equivalent pressure (BEP) under a constant Sb BEP, and they were then characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro-Raman scattering analysis. We confirmed that GaAs 1− x Sb x layers have been successfully grown on Si substrates by introducing AlSb layers.

Abstract

Using a fluorescence-based PCR-SSCP (single-strand conformation polymorphism), we verified imperfectibility in the paternal inheritance of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) in Chamaecyparis obtusa (Cupressaceae) controlled crosses. An intraspecific sequence polymorphism of the intergenic spacer region between the trnD and trnY genes was utilized as a molecular marker. Of 361 progenies, in which the cpDNA haplotypes of their female and male parents were different, 352 (97.5%) possessed the same haplotypes as their male parents, and nine (2.5%) the same haplotypes as their female parents. The parentage of the nine progenies with female parental types was diagnosed using DNA fingerprinting based on fluorescence-based RAPD profiles. Their parentage showed convincing evidence of the low frequency of maternal inheritance. Moreover, heteroplasmy was observed in the open-pollinated seeds collected in a seed orchard. The confirmation of maternal plastid transmission in the full-sib families and the observation of heteroplasmy in seeds reveal that the paternal inheritance of cpDNA is not an exclusive phenomenon and that the mode of its inheritance is biparental in C. obtusa.

Abstract

The accumulation of non-enzymatic modifications on both DNA and protein molecules under the attack of reactive oxygen species (ROS), is one of the most possible factors responsible for the functional deterioration in aged cells. Direct protein modifications as well as DNA damages may be detectable, in part, by proteome analysis if the gene expression is affected by the damages on DNA. The novel term “proteome”, which is a compound of “protein” and “genome”, means a whole set of proteins expressed in a tissue or a cell strain to be investigated. Proteomics is a methodology for analyzing proteomes. In proteomics, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis is performed primarily to separate constitutive proteins, followed by mass spectrometry to identify each protein of interest and to determine a possible post-translational modification. Proteomics has offered us an innovative tool for investigating the molecular mechanisms of cellular aging.

Abstract

The sensitivity of cancers to radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be influenced by susceptibility to apoptosis. We evaluated whether expression of three proteins regulating apoptosis, p53, bcl-2, and bax, could predict the effect of radiotherapy in esophageal cancers. We used immunohistochemical staining for these protein regulators of apoptosis to study biopsy specimens obtained from 25 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma before they underwent preoperative radiotherapy. Effectiveness of radiotherapy was assessed by barium esophagography, esophagoscopy, and computed tomography. Radiotherapy was effective in 12 patients and ineffective in 13 patients. Biopsy specimens from the 25 patients showed expression of p53, bcl-2, and bax to be 48.0%, 32.0%, and 76.0% respectively. Effectiveness of radiotherapy was correlated with p53 expression (p = 0.047), but bcl-2 and bax expression showed no relationship to effectiveness of radiotherapy. Expression of p53 protein in biopsy specimens may predict effectiveness of preoperative radiotherapy in esophageal cancers.

Abstract

Using polarized oxygen K edge spectroscopy, the first unoccupied orbital of LaSrMnO 4 was investigated. The lowest unoccupied orbital is of minority spin d x z , d y z character instead of the majority spin d x 2 - y 2 character. The d x 2 - y 2 orbital would be expected based on Hund's rule and the strong exchange interaction of the one-electron addition d 5 system. The explanation is a strong ligand field splitting caused by the strong local site distortion of the Mn site which raises the energy of the majority spin d x 2 - y 2 orbital and lowers the energy of the d x z , d y z orbitals. At the same time the two-electron integrals, which are responsible for the exchange interaction, are screened because of covalency.

Abstract

A 500-mW monolithic-microwave integrated-circuit (MMIC) amplifier using a 0.6-/spl mu/m Si MOSFET for 900-MHz-band use has been developed. The input matching network, which consists of a spiral inductor and an MOS capacitor, was integrated onto the chip using a low-cost mass-production large-scale-integration process. A new spiral-inductor model, taking into account the dielectric loss and skin effect of the Si substrate, was introduced. We analyzed the stability and gain dependence on the gate structure of the MOSFET and optimized the gate finger length and the loss of the matching network to achieve high gain and stability. The fabricated MMIC amplifier achieved a linear gain of 15.2 dB and an output power of 27.1 dBm with a PAE of 60% under a supply voltage of 4.8 V.

Abstract

The phenomenon of diffraction anomalous fine structure (DAFS) has been examined in relation to structural symmetry and is discussed for PbZrO 3 in the space group Pbam. It is found that DAFS appears on the superlattice reflection, even if the intensity of the reflection is free from the anomalous dispersion of heavy atoms at the relevant absorption edges. For reflections that are forbidden by the glide symmetry, DAFS oscillation can be observed, unaffected by the influence of absorption and of X-ray absorption fine structure oscillation; the amplitude of DAFS oscillation depends on the polarization of incident X-rays. The role of DAFS signals in superstructure investigation is discussed with respect to highly absorbing crystals of finite size.

A novel stereoselective synthesis of 3-hydroxyazetidines starting from 2,3-epoxyamines is described. Regioselectivity of the intramolecular cyclization of 2,3-epoxyamines is controlled by the use of magnesium bromide. The cyclization proceeds with retention of the stereochemistry, caused by double inversion of two sequential S N 2 reactions of the epoxyamines.

Abstract

The intestinal microbiota composition of 92 volunteers living in Japan was identified following the consumption of ‘identical meals’ (1,879 kcal/day) for 3 days. When faecal samples were analysed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism with several primer-restriction enzyme systems and then clustered, the patterns could be divided into 2 clusters. Contribution tests and partition modelling showed that OTU211 of the 35f-MspI system and OTU237 of the 35f-AluI system were key factors in the distribution of these groups. However, significant differences among these groups in terms of body mass index and age were not observed.

Abstract

Two-dimensional electrophoresis is a powerful technique for demonstrating cellular changes in protein synthesis and post-translational modification. The method of computer-aided two-dimensional densitometry was developed to facilitate the comparison of gels. However, powerful minicomputers were required to execute the sophisticated programs in the early stages of development. Recent advances in workstations have given rise to commercially available desktop systems on which the full functions of two-dimensional densitometry including spot matching and database construction are available. Thus two-dimensional gel protein databases of various cell types have been accumulating, and some of them are accessible through ExPASy server on the Internet computer network.

Abstract

To evaluate the protective effects of oral administration of milk fermented with a Lactococcus strain against influenza virus (IFV) infection in a mouse model.Milk fermented with exopolysaccharide-producing Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris (L. cremoris) FC was orally administered to BALB/c mice for 12 days. Mice were intranasally infected with IFV A/New Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1) on day 8, and survival was determined for 14 days after IFV infection. Survival rate and body weight loss after IFV infection in the L. cremoris FC fermented milk-administered group were significantly improved compared with those in the control group. In the unfermented milk-administered group, survival rate was not improved, whereas body weight loss was slightly improved compared with that in the control group. The mean virus titre in the lung of the L. cremoris FC fermented milk-administered group 3 days after infection was significantly decreased compared with that in the control group.These results suggest that oral administration of milk fermented with L. cremoris FC protects mice against IFV infection.These results demonstrate that oral administration of milk fermented with exopolysaccharide-producing Lactococcus strains might protect host animals against IFV infection.

Abstract

Diabetic metabolic change and response to aldose reductase inhibition in the Wistar rat lens were examined with phosphorus-31 (31P) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. To avoid artifacts in sample preparation, we used freshly excised lenses and acquired NMR data for 20 min immediately after lens extraction. The results showed a diabetes-induced time-dependent loss of ATP and phosphorylcholine (PC), an increase in alpha-glycerophosphate (alpha-GP) and inorganic phosphate and the appearance of sorbitol-3-phosphate (S-3-P) and fructose-3-phosphate (F-3-P). Oral but not topical dosing of an aldose reductase inhibitor, 5-(3-ethoxy-4-pentyloxyphenyl)-2,4- thiazolidinedione, resulted in a positive dose-response correlation characterized by a restoration of PC, S-3-P and F-3-P to the prediabetic level; however, alpha-GP and ATP were only partially normalized. The significance of the 31P change was further discussed.

Various five-membered heterocyclic compounds were synthesized by the reactions of N-substituted-2-aminomethyloxiranes with several different heterocumulenes in good yields.
