1. CANGAROO-III Observations of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0$-$4622

Abstract

Sub-TeV gamma-ray emission from the North-West rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0$-$4622 was detected with the CANGAROO-II telescope and recently confirmed by the H.E.S.S. group. In addition, the H.E.S.S. data revealed a very wide (up to two degrees in diameter), shell-like profile of the gamma-ray emission. We have carried out CANGAROO-III observations in January and February 2005 with three telescopes and show here the results of three-fold coincidence data. We confirm the H.E.S.S. results about the morphology and the energy spectrum, and find the energy spectrum in the NW-rim is consistent with that of the whole remnant., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, to appear in ApJ

Abstract

A new scenario is presented for the cause of magnetospheric relativistic electron decreases (REDs) and potential effects in the atmosphere and on climate. High density solar wind heliospheric plasmasheet (HPS) events impinge onto the magnetosphere, compressing it along with remnant noon-sector outer-zone magnetospheric ~10-100 keV protons. The betatron accelerated protons generate coherent EMIC waves through a temperature anisotropy (T┴/T|| > 1) instability. The waves in turn interact with relativistic electrons and cause the rapid loss of these particles to a small region of the atmosphere. Abstract

We observed the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1804-216 with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes from May to July in 2006. We detected very high energy gamma rays above 600 GeV at the 10 sigma level in an effective exposure of 76 hr. We obtained a differential flux of (5.0+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.6_{sys})\times 10^{-12}(E/1 TeV)^{-\alpha} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index \alpha of 2.69 +/- 0.30_{stat} +/- 0.34_{sys}, which is consistent with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. We also confirm the extended morphology of the source. By combining our result with multi-wavelength observations, we discuss the possible counterparts of HESS J1804-216 and the radiation mechanism based on leptonic and hadronic processes for a supernova remnant and a pulsar wind nebula., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, Accepted in ApJ

Abstract

We have observed the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 (G320.4-1.2), which contains the gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58, using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array from April to June in 2006. We detected gamma rays above 810 GeV at the 7 sigma level during a total effective exposure of 48.4 hours. We obtained a differential gamma-ray flux at 2.35 TeV of (7.9+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.7_{sys}) \times 10^{-13} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index of 2.21+/-0.39_{stat}+/-0.40_{sys}, which is compatible with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. The morphology shows extended emission compared to our Point Spread Function. We consider the plausible origin of the high energy emission based on a multi-wavelength spectral analysis and energetics arguments.

Abstract

Optical images of SN 1987A show a triple ring structure. The inner (dust) ring has recently increased in brightness and in the number of hot spots suggesting that the supernova shock wave has collided with the dense pre-existing circumstellar medium, a scenario supported by radio and X-ray observations. Such a shocked environment is widely expected to result in the acceleration of charged particles, and the accompanying emission of very high energy gamma-rays. Here, we report the results of observations made in 2004 and 2006 which yield upper limits on the TeV gamma-ray flux, which are compared with a theoretical prediction. In addition, we set upper limits on the TeV flux for four high energy objects which are located within the same field of view of the observation: the super-bubble 30 Dor C, the Crab-like pulsar PSR B0540$-$69, the X-ray binary LMC X-1, and the supernova remnant N157B., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We have been developing a two-dimensional microstrip gas chamber for neutron scattering experiments such as reflectometer and small-angle neutron scattering for the intense pulsed neutron source at JSNS. Our detection system comprises a gas vessel that can operate up to 10 atm, four amplifier-shaper-discriminator boards that provide 128 × 128 individual readouts, an encoding system to determine neutron incident positions, and a data display device. The developed system digitally calculates the incident position of a neutron as the centroid of the “hit-channels” to ensure fast neutron counting and imaging. To examine the performance of the developed detector system, the total range of the secondary particles emitted by the nuclear reaction between neutrons and 3He nuclei was evaluated by irradiating a detection area of 5 × 5 cm 2 under the gas condition of 6.6-atm helium (partial pressure of helium-3 is 0.5-atm, the rest is helium-4) with 1.4-atm CF4. We confirmed that the measured hit-channel distribution agreed with the Monte Carlo-simulated results. The detector exhibited a spatial resolution of 1.5 mm in each axis direction, as measured using the collimated cold-neutron beam.

Abstract

CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observations at low elevation angles.

Abstract

We have studied inclusive muon events using all the data collected by the TOPAZ detector at sqrt(s)=58 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 273pb-1. From 1328 inclusive muon events, we measured the ratio R_qq of the cross section for qq-bar production to the total hadronic cross section and forward-backward asymmetry A^q_FB for b and c quarks. The obtained results are R_bb = 0.13+-0.02(stat)+-0.01(syst), R_cc = 0.36+-0.05(stat)+-0.05(syst), A^b_FB = -0.20+-0.16(stat)+-0.01(syst) and A^c_FB = -0.17+-0.14(stat)+-0.02(syst), in fair agreement with a prediction of the standard model., Comment: To be published in EPJ C. 24 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The shape of jets produced in (quasi-) real photon-photon collisions as well as in e^+e^- annihilation process has been studied with a cone jet finding algorithm, using the data taken with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e^+e^- collider at an average center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented in terms of the jet width as a function of the jet transverse energy(E^{jet}_T) as well as a scaled transverse jet energy, x_T(=2E^{jet}_T/root(s)). The jet width narrows as E^{jet}_T increases; however, at the same value of E^{jet}_T the jet width in gamma-gamma collisions at TRISTAN is significantly narrower than that in gamma p collisions at HERA. By comparing our results with the data in other reactions, it has been shown that the jet width in gamma-gamma, gamma p, p\bar{p} collisions as well as the e^+e^- annihilation process has an approximate scaling behavior as a function of x_T.

Abstract

The mechanism of baryon-anti-baryon pair production in e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been studied using the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e + e − collider at an average center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The distributions of various p p correlations were compared with two prominent models: the cluster-fragmentation model and the string-fragmentation model. We rejected the cluster-fragmentation model at the 90% C.L. Furthermore, in the context of the string-fragmentation model, we favor the “popcorn” model, rejecting the “diquark” model, where a diquark is considered to be a fundamental entity, at the 95% C.L.

Abstract

Gamma rays with energies greater than 7 TeV from the Crab pulsar/nebula have been observed at large zenith angles, using the Imaging Atmospheric Technique from Woomera, South Australia. CANGAROO data taken in 1992, 1993 and 1995 indicate that the energy spectrum extends up to at least 50 TeV, without a change of the index of the power law spectrum. The observed differential spectrum is \noindent $(2.01\pm 0.36)\times 10^{-13}(E/{7 TeV})^{-2.53 \pm 0.18} TeV^{-1}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ between 7 TeV and 50 TeV. There is no apparent cut-off. The spectrum for photon energies above $\sim$10 TeV allows the maximum particle acceleration energy to be inferred, and implies that this unpulsed emission does not originate near the light cylinder of the pulsar, but in the nebula where the magnetic field is not strong enough to allow pair creation from the TeV photons. The hard gamma-ray energy spectrum above 10 TeV also provides information about the varying role of seed photons for the inverse Compton process at these high energies, as well as a possible contribution of $\pi ^{\circ}$-gamma rays from proton collisions.

Abstract

Charged-particle multiplicity was studied in e+e− annihilation at s = 57.8 GeV using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The average multiplicity was 〈nch〉 = 17.64± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.41(syst.). It was found that the multiplicity depends on the thrust (T) of an event. From extrapolating this relation to T = 2 3 , the multiplicity for three-fold symmetric events was estimated to be 〈n ch 〉 T = 2 3 = 23.50 −1.45 +1.25 . From this, the multiplicity ratio between gluon- and quark-jet was estimated to be r g q = 1.46 −0.13 +0.09 without any possible bias from jet clustering.

Abstract

We report the first purely electroweak measurement of the strengthening of the electromagnetic coupling, {alpha}{sub QED} with increasing momentum transfer Q{sup 2}, by comparing the process e{sup +}e{sup -}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} with the process e{sup +}e{sup -}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup -}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}. The data were accumulated at an average center-of-mass energy {l_angle}{radical}(s){r_angle}=57.77GeV using the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. We measure {alpha}{sup -1}{sub QED}(Q{sup 2}) to change from its known value of {alpha}{sup -1}{sub QED}{congruent} 137.0 at Q{sup 2}=0to1 28.5{plus_minus}1.8(stat){plus_minus}0.7(syst) at Q{sup 2}=(57.77GeV/c){sup 2}. Abstract

In single photon emission CT one of the disadvantages of a data acquisition system is low efficiency. This is caused by the use of a collimator, which decreases the geometrical data collection efficiency to less than 0.001 of the photons emitted from a radionuclide. To overcome this problem an advanced Compton camera (ACC) was proposed by Tanimori. This camera detects the entering direction of a photon to the detector with the Compton scattering phenomenon, and the direction is analyzed with the information of the position of Compton scattering, moving direction of a recoiled electron and the energy deposited in the second detector where the whole energy of the scattered photon is released. We developed a reconstruction algorithm for the ACC and evaluated the quality of the reconstructed images in our previous work. In those studies we simplified the reconstruction model and did not consider interactions of emitted gamma rays with the object in which the radionuclide distributes. In this paper we investigated the effect of interactions between the object and primary photons emitted from the source.

Abstract

We report a study of single photon production in e+e− collisions at s =58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. From data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 213 pb−1, 5 single photon candidates remained after event selection, which can be compared with the expected 3.1 ν ν γ and 2.8 background events. These results exclude the selectron mass below 47.2 GeV at the 90% confidence level, if e L and e R are mass-degenerate and the photino is massless. When combined with results from other experiments, this limit improves to 75.0 GeV.

Abstract

We have carried out inclusive measurements of $\Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})$ production in two-photon processes at TRISTAN. The mean $\sqrt{s}$ was 58 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 265 pb$^{-1}$. Inclusive $\Lambda (\bar{\Lambda})$ samples were obtained under such conditions as no-electron, anti-electron, and remnant-jet tags. The data were compared with theoretical calculations. The measured cross sections are two-times larger than the leading-order theoretical predictions, suggesting the necessity of next-to-leading-order Monte-Carlo generator.

Abstract

The total hadronic cross section in e + e − annihilation was measured at s =5.77 GeV to be σ h = 143.6 ± 1.5 (stat) ± 3.5 (sys) pb with only the QED corrections. The measurement was based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 90.8 pb −1 accumulated by the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. Our data point put stringent constraints on the size of the γ - Z 0 interference and the Z 0 mass. Combining our data with the OPAL data at LEP, we obtained the coefficient of the interference and the Z 0 mass to be J had = 0.10 ± 0.26 and M z = 91.151 ± 0.008 GeV, respectively, in a model-independent analysis.

Abstract

Inclusive momentum spectra are measured for all charged particles and for each of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^0/\bar{K^0}$, and $p/\bar{p}$ in hadronic events produced via $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$=58GeV . The measured spectra are compared with QCD predictions based on the modified leading log approximation(MLLA). The MLLA model reproduces the measured spectra well. The energy dependence of the peak positions of the spectra is studied by comparing the measurements with those at other energies. The energy dependence is also well described by the MLLA model.

Abstract

We have carried out an inclusive measurement of $K^0(\bar{K^0})$ production in two-photon processes at TRISTAN. The mean $\sqrt{s}$ was 58 GeV and the integrated luminosity was 199 pb$^{-1}$. High-statistics $K_s$ samples were obtained under such conditions as no-, anti-electron, and remnant-jet tags. Abstract

We have measured, with electron tagging, the forward-backward asymmetries of charm- and bottom-quark pair productions at $ $=58.01GeV, based on 23,783 hadronic events selected from a data sample of 197pb$^{-1}$ taken with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The measured forward-backward asymmetries are $A_{FB}^c = -0.49 \pm 0.20(stat.) \pm 0.08 (sys.)$ and $A_{FB}^b = -0.64 \pm 0.35(stat.) \pm 0.13 (sys.)$, which are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Abstract

We have studied open charm production in $\gamma \gamma$ collisions with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. In this study, charm quarks were identified by electrons (and positrons) from semi-leptonic decays of charmed hadrons. The data corresponded to an integrated luminosity of 95.3 pb$^{-1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented as the cross sections of inclusive electron production in $\gamma \gamma$ collisions with an anti-tag condition, as well as the subprocess cross sections, which correspond to resolved-photon processes. The latter were measured by using a sub-sample with remnant jets. A comparison with various theoretical predictions based on direct and resolved-photon processes showed that our data prefer that with relatively large gluon contents in a photon at small $x (x \le 0.1)$, with the next-to-leading order correction, and with a charm-quark mass of 1.3 GeV.

Abstract

We have measured the photon structure function F2γ in the reaction e+e− → e+e− hadrons for average Q2 values from 5.1 to 338 GeV2 by using data collected by the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The data have been corrected for detector effects and are compared with theoretical expectations based on QCD. The structure function F2γ increases as ln Q2, as expected. A sample of events with one or two distinct jets has been identified in the final state. Although two-jet events can be explained solely by the point-like perturbative part, one-jet events require a significant hadron-like part in addition.

Abstract

We studied relations between the microstructure and core loss of Mn-Zn ferrites for power supplies. As the results, we found that the lowest core loss was achieved at 100 kHz and 200 mT condition when the average grain size were 15 to 17 /spl mu/m. Then, we examined the effect of the third element in addition to CaO-SiO/sub 2/ on their deposition behavior in the grain boundary and we found the some additives such as Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/, Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and ZrO/sub 2/ which reduce the core loss. Further more, by optimizing the sintering condition, we were able to obtain the extremely low loss Mn-Zn ferrite material for power applications.

Abstract

Kepler's supernova, discovered in October 1604, produced a remnant that has been well studied observationally in the radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray bands, and theoretically. Some models have predicted a TeV gamma-ray flux that is detectable with current Imaging Cherenkov Atmospheric Telescopes. We report on observations carried out in 2005 April with the CANGAROO-III telescope. Abstract

Very and Ultra high energy gamma rays from SN1987A are searched in New Zealand since the end of 1987. The new results measured in the both energy regions of very and ultra high energy gamma rays during 1988 are reported. In particular, the Cherenkov observation with large zenith angle provided the most restrict upper bound for ∼100 TeV region gamma rays flux from SN1987A. Also, It is planned to construct an imaging TeV telescope for improving the TeV observation in the Southern hemisphere at Woomera, Australia with the corporation of Adelaide University.

Abstract

The folded differential cross sections {ital d}{sigma}/{ital d}{Omega}({theta}{sup *})+d{sigma}/d{Omega}({pi}{minus}{theta}{sup *}), where {theta}{sup *} is the center-of-mass angle of the negatively charged outgoing particle, have been measured for the reactions {ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +} and {ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K}{sup +} at 15 incident beam momenta between 360 and 760 MeV/{ital c} with much better statistics than previous experiments. The total cross sections for these reactions, {sigma}{sub {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}} and {sigma}{sub {ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K}{sup +}}, have also been obtained by integrating the folded differential cross sections. The folded differential cross sections of both reactions show a similar behavior at all measured beam momenta, characterized by a prominent peak at {vert bar}cos{theta}{sup *}{vert bar}=1. The cross section {sigma}{sub {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}} shows a smooth but rapidly decreasing behavior as the beam momentum increases up to 550 MeV/{ital c}, whereas {sigma}{sub {ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K}{sup +}} shows a smooth and flat momentum dependence. These results are compared with some theoretical calculations based on nonrelativistic quark models. Although the shape of the folded differential cross section of the {ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +} reaction is rather well reproduced by these models, that of the {ital {bar p}p}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup {minus}}K{supmore » +} reaction, and, in particular, the prominent peak at {vert bar}cos{theta}{sup *}{vert bar}=1 cannot be explained at all. The information from other experiments indicates that this discrepancy is most pronounced at the backward angles. Moreover, the momentum dependence of both {sigma}{sub {pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}} and {sigma}{sub {ital K}{sup {minus}}{ital K}{sup +}} is not satisfactorily reproduced by these models.« less

Abstract

The observation of 8B solar Neutrinos in the Kamiokande-II detector is presented. Based on 450 days of data in the time period of January 1987 through May 1988, the measured flux obtained with Ee ≥ 9.3 MeV was 0.46 ± 0.13 (stat) ± 0.08 (sys) of the value predicted by the standard solar model. The detector and analysis methods were improved since June 1988 and the background level has been decreased by a factor of about three since then.

Abstract

We have used the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to observe the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (HBL) object PKS 2155-304 between 2006 July 28 (MJD 53944) and August 2, triggered by the H.E.S.S. report that the source was in a high state of TeV gamma-ray emission. A signal was detected at the 4.8 sigma level in an effective live time of 25.1 hours during the outburst period. The flux of Very High Energy gammarays from the CANGAROO-III observations shows the variability on the time scale of less than a few hours. The averaged integral flux above 660 GeV is (1.6 +/- 0.3_stat +/- 0.5_syst) x 10^-11 cm^-2 sec^-1 which corresponds to ~45% of the flux observed from the Crab nebula. Follow-up observations between August 17 (MJD 53964) and 25 indicate the source activity had decreased., 24 pages, 7 figures, to be published in ApJ

Abstract

We have observed the giant radio galaxy Centaurus A and the globular cluster $\omega$ Centauri in the TeV energy region using the CANGAROO-III stereoscopic system. The system has been in operation since 2004 withan array of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) with $\sim$100-m spacings. The observations were carried out in March and April 2004. In total, approximately 10 hours data were obtained for each target.No statistically significant gamma-ray signal has been found above 420 GeV over a wide angular region (a one-degree radius from thepointing center) and we derive flux upper limits using all of the field of view.Implications for the total energy of cosmic rays and the density of the cold dark matter are considered., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to appear in ApJ, emulateapj.cls

Abstract

A conventional Compton camera reconstructs initial gamma-rays direction as circle. A Compton gamma-ray camera which we have developed can detect electron tracks. So our camera can reconstruct the initial gamma-rays as arc. It makes getting the low noise of image. In this paper, we report the results of three version of electron tracking camera. One is 10 x 10 x 10 cm3 Time Projection Chamber (TPC) as a scatter detector and 15 x 15 cm2 GSO pixel scintillator array (PSA) as an absorber. Second is a 10 x 10 x 10 cm3 TPC and a 10 x 10 cm2 LaBr3 PSA. The energy resolution of LaBr3 scintillator is about 2 times better than GSO scintillator. Third is a 30 x 30 x 15 cm3 TPC and a 30 x 30 cm2 GSO pixel PSA. The efficiency of this system is better than 10 cm3 cube Compton gammra-ray camera.

Abstract

Sub-TeV gamma-ray emission from the North-West rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0$-$4622 was detected with the CANGAROO-II telescope and recently confirmed by the H.E.S.S. group. In addition, the H.E.S.S. data revealed a very wide (up to two degrees in diameter), shell-like profile of the gamma-ray emission. We have carried out CANGAROO-III observations in January and February 2005 with three telescopes and show here the results of three-fold coincidence data. We confirm the H.E.S.S. results about the morphology and the energy spectrum, and find the energy spectrum in the NW-rim is consistent with that of the whole remnant., 9 pages, 13 figures, to appear in ApJ

Abstract

We made stereoscopic observations of the Vela Pulsar region with two of the 10 m diameter CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in January and February, 2004, in a search for sub-TeV gamma-rays from the pulsar and surrounding regions. We describe the observations, provide a detailed account of the calibration methods, and introduce the improved and bias-free analysis techniques employed for CANGAROO-III data. No evidence of gamma-ray emission is found from either the pulsar position or the previously reported position offset by 0.13 degree, and the resulting upper limits are a factor of five less than the previously reported flux from observations with the CANGAROO-I 3.8 m telescope. Following the recent report by the H.E.S.S. group of TeV gamma-ray emission from the Pulsar Wind Nebula, which is $\sim$0.5 degree south of the pulsar position, we examined this region and found supporting evidence for emission extended over $\sim$0.6 degree., 13 pages, 26 figures, emulateapj.cls, to appear in ApJ

Abstract

The paper describes the design and implementation of a flexible, fine-grained protection mechanism for operating systems based on an object/thread model. The mechanism has the following features: (1) it provides fine-grained protection: each thread has a list of keys (capabilities) and inherits object's keys when it invokes an abject. (2) The mechanism is very flexible: a combination of multiple keys are used to represent various conditions for accessing objects. (3) It allows a group of keys to be defined as key group, which realizes hierarchical, integrated key processing and management. (4) Users can specify an SCL (subject control list), which defines a list of objects that a subject can invoke. This is used to restrict subjects; suspected subjects are only allowed to access the objects specified in the SCL. The proposed mechanism is being implemented in an object-based operating system which the authors are developing. Implementation techniques to improve efficiency are also described.

Abstract

We have observed highly virtual ($Q^2>1.05 GeV^2$) photon-photon collisions to hadronic final states at $\sqrt{s_{e^+e^-}}=58 GeV$. The integrated luminosity of the data sample was 241pb$^{-1}$. Both scattered beam-electrons and scattered beam-positrons were detected using low-angle calorimeters (i.e., both photons were highly virtual, "double-tag"); we obtained 115 hadronic events with an estimated background of $10.2\pm1.1$. The cross section obtained was $4.11\pm0.66$pb in the $22$ GeV region, while the lowest order quark-parton model predicted 3.00pb., Comment: 14 pages, latex (revtex), 2 figures, available at http://topsun1.kek.jp/~enomoto/dtag.ps

Abstract

The differential cross section of $d\sigma(e^+e^-\to e^+e^-D^{*\pm}X)/dP_T$ was measured using a soft-pion analysis of $D^{*\pm}\to \pi_s^\pm D^0(\bar{D^0})$ at TRISTAN. The average $\sqrt{s}$ was 58.1 GeV and the integrated luminosity used in this analysis was 198 pb$^{-1}$, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, Latex format, figures will be sent by 'figures' command

Abstract

High-energy neutrinos could be emitted from the center of the Sun as annihilation products of heavy galactic dark-matter particles. We analyze neutrino events observed by the Kamiokande detector to search for such neutrinos. The observed upper limits on solar high-energy neutrinos from these data set limits on the mass and density of certain galactic dark matter. The particles analyzed are heavy Dirac neutrinos ({nu}{sub {ital D}}), heavy Majorana neutrinos ({nu}{sub {ital M}}), Higgsinos ({ital {tilde h}}), neutrinos ({tilde {nu}}) with three flavors, and photinos ({tilde {gamma}}) as the lightest supersymmetric particles. Excluded mass regions are obtained for each dark-matter candidate: 3 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub {nu}{ital D}}{lt}100 GeV, 3 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub n{tilde u}}{ital e}{lt}90 GeV, 3 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub n}{tilde u}{mu}{lt}90 GeV, and 4 GeV{lt}{ital m}{sub n}{tilde u}{tau}{lt}90 GeV. No limits are obtained on the masses of {nu}{sub {ital M}}, {ital {tilde h}}, and {tilde {gamma}} yet.

Abstract

The active galaxy Centaurus A and the X-ray binary systems Vela X-1, Centaurus X-3, and Circinus X-1 were monitored for VHE gamma-ray emission above 1 TeV with the JANZOS Cerenkov facility during 1988 and 1989. No evidence was found for persistent or episodic emission from any of these objects. Subsequent upper limits on the integral fluxes of 2.2×10 −11 , 2.8×10 −11 , 4.0×10 −11 ,and 4.2×10 −11 cm −1 s −1 , respectively, were obtained for these objects. These limits are consistent with results of observations made by other groups
