1. Tropospheric ozone precursors: global and regional distributions, trends, and variability

Abstract

Tropospheric ozone results from in situ chemical formation and stratosphere–troposphere exchange (STE), with the latter being more important in the middle and upper troposphere than in the lower troposphere. Ozone photochemical formation is nonlinear and results from the oxidation of methane and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) in the presence of nitrogen oxide (NOx=NO+NO2). Previous studies showed that O3 short- and long-term trends are nonlinearly controlled by near-surface anthropogenic emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen oxides, which may also be impacted by the long-range transport (LRT) of O3 and its precursors. In addition, several studies have demonstrated the important role of STE in enhancing ozone levels, especially in the midlatitudes. In this article, we investigate tropospheric ozone spatial variability and trends from 2005 to 2019 and relate those to ozone precursors on global and regional scales. We also investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics of the ozone formation regime in relation to ozone chemical sources and sinks. Our analysis is based on remote sensing products of the tropospheric column of ozone (TrC-O3) and its precursors, nitrogen dioxide (TrC-NO2), formaldehyde (TrC-HCHO), and total column CO (TC-CO), as well as ozonesonde data and model simulations. Our results indicate a complex relationship between tropospheric ozone column levels, surface ozone levels, and ozone precursors. While the increasing trends of near-surface ozone concentrations can largely be explained by variations in VOC and NOx concentration under different regimes, TrC-O3 may also be affected by other variables such as tropopause height and STE as well as LRT. Decreasing or increasing trends in TrC-NO2 have varying effects on TrC-O3, which is related to the different local chemistry in each region. We also shed light on the contribution of NOx lightning and soil NO and nitrous acid (HONO) emissions to trends of tropospheric ozone on regional and global scales.

2. Evaluation of modelled versus observed non-methane volatile organic compounds at European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme sites in Europe

Abstract

Atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) constitute a wide range of species, acting as precursors to ozone and aerosol formation. Atmospheric chemistry and transport models (CTMs) are crucial to understanding the emissions, distribution, and impacts of VOCs. Given the uncertainties in VOC emissions, lack of evaluation studies, and recent changes in emissions, this work adapts the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – West (EMEP MSC-W) CTM to evaluate emission inventories in Europe. Here we undertake the first intensive model–measurement comparison of VOCs in 2 decades. The modelled surface concentrations are evaluated both spatially and temporally, using measurements from the regular EMEP monitoring network in 2018 and 2019, as well as a 2022 campaign. To achieve this, we utilised the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory to derive explicit emission profiles for individual species and employed a tracer method to produce pure concentrations that are directly comparable to observations. The degree to which the modelled and measured VOCs agree varies depending on the specific species. The model successfully captures the overall spatial and temporal variations of major alkanes (e.g. ethane, n-butane) and unsaturated species (e.g. ethene, benzene) but less so for propane, i-butane, and ethyne. This discrepancy underscores potential issues in the boundary conditions for the latter species and in their primary emissions from, in particular, the solvent and road transport sectors. Specifically, potential missing propane emissions and issues with its boundary conditions are highlighted by large model underestimations and smaller propane-to-ethane ratios compared to the measurement. Meanwhile, both the model and measurements show strong linear correlations among butane isomers and among pentane isomers, indicating common sources for these pairs of isomers. However, modelled ratios of i-butane to n-butane and i-pentane to n-pentane are approximately one-third of the measured ratios, which is largely driven by significant emissions of n-butane and n-pentane from the solvent sector. This suggests issues with the speciation profile of the solvent sector, underrepresented contributions from transport and fuel evaporation sectors in current inventories, or both. Furthermore, the modelled ethene-to-ethyne and benzene-to-ethyne ratios differ significantly from measured ratios. The different model performance strongly points to shortcomings in the spatial and temporal patterns and magnitudes of ethyne emissions, especially during winter. For OVOCs, the modelled and measured concentrations of methanal and methylglyoxal show a good agreement, despite a moderate underestimation by the model in summer. This discrepancy could be attributed to an underestimation of contributions from biogenic sources or possibly a model overestimation of their photolytic loss in summer. However, the insufficiency of suitable measurements limits the evaluation of other OVOCs. Finally, model simulations employing the CAMS inventory show slightly better agreements with measurements than those using the Centre on Emission Inventories and Projections (CEIP) inventory. This enhancement is likely due to the CAMS inventory's detailed segmentation of the road transport sector, including its associated sub-sector-specific emission profiles. Given this improvement, alongside the previously mentioned concerns about the model's biased estimations of various VOC ratios, future efforts should focus on a more detailed breakdown of dominant emission sectors (e.g. solvents) and the refinement of their speciation profiles to improve model accuracy.

3. Measurements of atmospheric C10–C15 biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) with sorbent tubes

Abstract

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs; e.g. terpenes) are highly reactive compounds typically present at sub-parts-per-billion mole fractions in the air. Due to this, their measurements are challenging and they may suffer losses during sampling, storage and analyses. Even though online measurements of BVOCs are becoming more common, the use of sorbent tubes is expected to continue because they offer greater spatial coverage compared to online measurements, and no infrastructure (e.g. electricity, housing/shelter with stable temperature and humidity, sampling lines) is required for sampling. In this study, the performance of an offline technique for the measurement of BVOCs based on sorbent tube sampling was evaluated. Tested compounds included eight monoterpenes, five sesquiterpenes and five oxygenated BVOCs, which are generally either directly emitted (1,8-cineol, linalool, bornyl acetate) or oxidation products (nopinone and 4-acetyl-1-methylcyclohexene). Two sorbent materials (Tenax TA and Carbopack B) and four tube materials (stainless steel (SS), SilcoNert 1000, glass and glass-coated SS) were used. The laboratory evaluations determined the storage stability, breakthrough volumes, suitable tube materials, recovery from ozone scrubbers and particulate filters, and sampling efficiency. In addition, an intercomparison between two laboratories was conducted. No multibed configurations were tested. Of the sorbent materials Tenax TA showed acceptable results for these BVOCs, while with Carbopack B losses and increases in some compounds were detected. Studied compounds were found to be stable in Tenax TA tubes for at least 1 month at −20 and at +20 ∘C. Breakthrough tests indicated that α- and β-pinene have clearly lower breakthrough volumes in the Tenax TA tubes used (4–7 and 8–26 L, respectively) than other terpenes (> 160 L). SS, SilcoNert 1000 and glass were all shown to be suitable tube materials. Results from Tenax TA sorbent tube sampling agreed with online sampling for most compounds. Heated SS tubes, sodium thiosulfate filters and KI/Cu traps were found to be suitable ozone scrubbers for the studied BVOCs. Tested particle filters had a greater impact on limonene (relative difference < +7 %) than on α- and β-pinene (relative difference ±2 %). The laboratory intercomparison of α- and β-pinene measurements showed that in general, measured values by the two laboratories were in good agreement with Tenax TA.

Abstract

An original time series of about 300 atmospheric measurements of a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was obtained at a remote Mediterranean station on the northern tip of Corsica (Ersa, France) over 25 months from June 2012 to June 2014. This study presents the seasonal variabilities of 35 selected VOCs and their various associated sources. The VOC abundance was largely dominated by oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) along with primary anthropogenic VOCs with a long lifetime in the atmosphere. VOC temporal variations were then examined. Primarily of local origin, biogenic VOCs exhibited notable seasonal and interannual variations, related to temperature and solar radiation. Anthropogenic compounds showed increased concentrations in winter (JFM months) followed by a decrease in spring/summer (AMJ/JAS months) and higher winter concentration levels in 2013 than in 2014 by up to 0.3 µg m−3 in the cases of propane, acetylene and benzene. OVOC concentrations were generally high in summertime, mainly due to secondary anthropogenic/biogenic and primary biogenic sources, whereas their lower concentrations during autumn and winter were potentially more influenced by primary/secondary anthropogenic sources. Moreover, an apportionment factorial analysis was applied to a database comprising a selection of 14 individual or grouped VOCs by means of the positive matrix factorization (PMF) technique. A PMF five-factor solution was taken on. It includes an anthropogenic factor (which contributed 39 % to the total concentration of the VOCs selected in the PMF analysis) connected to the regional background pollution, three other anthropogenic factors (namely short-lived anthropogenic sources, evaporative sources, and long-lived combustion sources, which together accounted for 57 %) originating from either nearby or more distant emission areas (such as Italy and south of France), and a local biogenic source (4 %). Variations in these main sources impacting VOC concentrations observed at the Ersa station were also investigated at seasonal and interannual scales. In spring and summer, VOC concentrations observed at Ersa were the lowest in the 2-year period, despite higher biogenic source contributions. During these seasons, anthropogenic sources advected to Ersa were largely influenced by chemical transformations and vertical dispersion phenomena and were mainly of regional origins. During autumn and winter, anthropogenic sources showed higher contributions when European air masses were advected to Ersa and could be associated with potential emission areas located in Italy and possibly more distant ones in central Europe. Higher VOC winter concentrations in 2013 than in 2014 could be related to contribution variations in anthropogenic sources probably governed by their emission strength with external parameters, i.e. weaker dispersion phenomena and the pollutant depletion. High-frequency observations collected during several intensive field campaigns conducted at Ersa during the three summers 2012–2014 confirmed findings drawn from bi-weekly samples of the 2-year period in terms of summer concentration levels and source apportionment. However, they also suggested that higher sampling frequency and temporal resolution, in particular to observe VOC concentration variations during the daily cycle, would have been necessary to confirm the deconvolution of the different anthropogenic sources identified following the PMF approach. Finally, comparisons of the 25 months of Ersa observations with VOC measurements conducted at 17 other European monitoring stations highlighted the representativeness of the Ersa station for monitoring seasonal variations in VOC regional pollution impacting continental Europe. Nevertheless, VOC winter concentration levels can significantly vary between sites, pointing out spatial variations in anthropogenic source contributions. As a result, Ersa concentration variations in winter were more representative of VOC regional pollution impacting central Europe. Moreover, interannual and spatial variations in VOC winter concentration levels were significantly impacted by synoptic phenomena influencing meteorological conditions observed in continental Europe, suggesting that short observation periods may reflect the variability of the identified parameters under the specific meteorological conditions of the study period.

5. Composition and variability of gaseous organic pollution in the port megacity of Istanbul: source attribution, emission ratios, and inventory evaluation

Abstract

In the framework of the TRANSport Emissions and Mitigation in the East Mediterranean (TRANSEMED/ChArMEx) program, volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements were performed for the first time in Istanbul (Turkey) at an urban site in September 2014. One commercial gas chromatograph coupled to a flame ionization detector (GC–FID) and one proton transfer mass spectrometer (PTR-MS) were deployed. In addition, sorbent tubes and canisters were implemented within the megacity close to major emission sources. More than 70 species including non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs), and organic compounds of intermediate volatility (IVOCs) have been quantified. Among these compounds, 23 anthropogenic and biogenic species were continuously collected at the urban site. VOC concentrations show a great variability with maxima exceeding 10 ppb (i.e., n-butane, toluene, methanol, and acetaldehyde) and mean values between 0.1 (methacrolein + methyl vinyl ketone) and 4.9 ppb (methanol). OVOCs represent 43.9 % of the total VOC concentrations followed by alkanes (26.3 %), aromatic compounds (20.7 %), alkenes (4.8 %), terpenes (3.4 %), and acetonitrile (0.8 %). Five factors have been extracted from the Positive Matrix Factorization model (EPA PMF 5.0) and have been compared to source profiles established by near-field measurements and other external variables (meteorological parameters, NOx, CO, SO2, etc.). Surprisingly, road transport is not the dominant source, only explaining 15.8 % of measured VOC concentrations contrary to the local emission inventory. Other factors are toluene from solvent use (14.2 %), biogenic terpenes (7.8 %), natural gas evaporation (25.9 %) composed of butanes, and a last factor characterized by mixed regional emissions and composed of most of the species (36.3 %). The PMF model results point out the influence of industrial emissions while there is no clear evidence of the impact of ship emissions on the measured VOC distribution. For the latter additional measurements of organic compounds of lower volatility like IVOC would be helpful. The sensitivity of PMF results to input data (time resolution, meteorological period, peak episode, interpolation method) was tested. While some PMF runs do not perform as well statistically as the reference run, sensitivity tests show that the same factors (number and type) are found with slightly different factor contributions (up to 16 % of change). Finally, the emission ratios (ERs) of VOCs relative to carbon monoxide (CO) were established. These ratios are usually higher than the ones of other cities worldwide but in the same range of magnitude. These ERs and the road transport factor from PMF were used to estimate VOC emissions and to evaluate three downscaled global emissions inventories (EDGAR, ACCMIP, and MACCity). It was found that the total annual VOC anthropogenic emissions by global inventories were either within the same range by a factor of 2 to 3 for alkanes and aromatics or underestimated by an order of magnitude, especially for oxygenated VOCs.

6. Optimization of a gas chromatographic unit for measuring biogenic volatile organic compounds in ambient air

A new online gas chromatographic method dedicated to biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) analysis was developed for the measurement of a 20 BVOC gaseous mixture (isoprene; β-pinene; α-pinene; limonene; ocimene; myrcene; sabinene; Δ3-carene; camphene; 1,8 cineole; terpinolene; linalool; α-phellandrene; nopinone; citral; α-terpinene; β-caryophyllene; p-cymene; γ-terpinene; and 2-carene) at a time resolution of 90 min. The optimized method includes an online Peltier-cooled thermodesorption system sample trap made of Carbopack B coupled to a gas chromatographic system equipped with a 60 m, 0.25 mm internal diameter (i.d.) BPX5 column. Eluent was analysed using flame ionization detection (FID). Potassium iodide was identified as the best ozone scrubber for the 20 BVOC mixture. In order to obtain an accurate quantification of BVOC concentrations, the development of a reliable standard mixture was also required. Quantification of BVOCs was reported with a detection limit ranging from 4 ppt for α-pinene to 19 ppt for sabinene. The main source of uncertainty was the calibration step, stressing the need for certified gaseous standards for a wider panel of BVOCs. This new method was applied for the first time to measure BVOCs in a pine forest during the LANDEX episode 1 field campaign (summer 2017). All target BVOCs were detected at least once during the campaign. The two major monoterpenes observed were β-pinene and α-pinene, representing 60 % of the measured terpenoid concentration on average, while isoprene represented only 17 %. The uncertainties determined were always below 13 % for the six major terpenes.

Abstract

More than 7000 atmospheric measurements of over 60 C2 − C16 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were conducted at a background site in Cyprus during a 1-month intensive field campaign held in March 2015. This exhaustive dataset consisted of primary anthropogenic and biogenic VOCs, including a wide range of source-specific tracers, and oxygenated VOCs (with various origins) that were measured online by flame ionization detection–gas chromatography and proton transfer mass spectrometry. Online submicron aerosol chemical composition was performed in parallel using an aerosol mass spectrometer. This study presents the high temporal variability in VOCs and their associated sources. A preliminary analysis of their time series was performed on the basis of independent tracers (NO, CO, black carbon), meteorological data and the clustering of air mass trajectories. Biogenic compounds were mainly attributed to a local origin and showed compound-specific diurnal cycles such as a daily maximum for isoprene and a nighttime maximum for monoterpenes. Anthropogenic VOCs as well as oxygenated VOCs displayed higher mixing ratios under the influence of continental air masses (i.e., western Asia), indicating that long-range transport significantly contributed to the VOC levels in the area. Source apportionment was then conducted on a database of 20 VOCs (or grouped VOCs) using a source receptor model. The positive matrix factorization and concentration field analyses were hence conducted to identify and characterize covariation factors of VOCs that were representative of primary emissions as well as chemical transformation processes. A six-factor PMF solution was selected, namely two primary biogenic factors (relative contribution of 43 % to the total mass of VOCs) for different types of emitting vegetation; three anthropogenic factors (short-lived combustion source, evaporative sources, industrial and evaporative sources; 21 % all together), identified as being either of local origin or from more distant emission zones (i.e., the south coast of Turkey); and a last factor (36 %) associated with regional background pollution (air masses transported both from the Western and Eastern Mediterranean regions). One of the two biogenic and the regional background factors were found to be the largest contributors to the VOC concentrations observed at our sampling site. Finally, a combined analysis of VOC PMF factors with source-apportioned organic aerosols (OAs) helped to better distinguish between anthropogenic and biogenic influences on the aerosol and gas phase compositions. The highest OA concentrations were observed when the site was influenced by air masses rich in semi-volatile OA (less oxidized aerosols) originating from the southwest of Asia, in contrast with OA factor contributions associated with the remaining source regions. A reinforcement of secondary OA formation also occurred due to the intense oxidation of biogenic precursors.

8. Composition of gaseous organic carbon during ECOCEM in Beirut, Lebanon: new observational constraints for VOC anthropogenic emission evaluation in the Middle East

Abstract

The relative importance of eastern Mediterranean emissions is suspected to be largely underestimated compared to other regions worldwide. Here we use detailed speciated measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to evaluate the spatial heterogeneity of VOC urban emission composition and the consistency of regional and global emission inventories downscaled to Lebanon (European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme, EMEP; Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Model Intercomparison Project, ACCMIP; and MACCity, Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate and megaCITY Zoom for the Environment). The assessment was conducted through the comparison of the emission ratios (ERs) extracted from the emission inventories to the ones obtained from the hourly observations collected at a suburban site in Beirut, Lebanon, during summer and winter ECOCEM (Emissions and Chemistry of Organic Carbon in the Eastern Mediterranean) campaigns. The observed ERs were calculated using two independent methods. ER values from both methods agree very well and are comparable to the ones of the road transport sector from near-field measurements for more than 80 % of the species. There is no significant seasonality in ER for more than 90 % of the species, unlike the seasonality usually observed in other cities worldwide. Regardless of the season, ERs agree within a factor of 2 between Beirut and other representative cities worldwide, except for the unburned fuel fraction and ethane. ERs of aromatics (except benzene) are higher in Beirut compared to northern post-industrialized countries and even the Middle Eastern city Mecca. The comparison of the observed ER to the ones extracted from the ACCMIP and MACCity global emission inventories suggests that the overall speciation of anthropogenic sources for major hydrocarbons that act as ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors in ACCMIP is better represented than other species. The comparison of the specific road transport ERs, relative to acetylene derived from near-field measurements, to ERs from ACCMIP and EMEP emission inventories for the road transport sector showed that ERs of more reactive species are usually consistent within a factor of 2 with EMEP, while xylenes and toluene are underestimated by over a factor of 2 by ACCMIP. The observed heterogeneity of anthropogenic VOC emission composition between Middle Eastern cities can be significant for reactive VOCs but is not depicted by global emission inventories. This suggests that systematic and detailed measurements are needed in the eastern Mediterranean Basin in order to better constrain emission inventory.

9. Spatial and temporal variability of BTEX in Paris megacity: Two-wheelers as a major driver

Abstract

Besides their impacts on health, BTEX play an important role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols and ozone for which limit values are regularly exceeded in Paris megacity and Ile de France region. An enrichment by a factor of 3 in the C7C9 aromatic fraction in the Paris atmosphere compared to other northern mid-latitude cities was shown in 2013. Here, we combined different approaches to investigate the role of transport-related sources in such enrichment (gasoline composition and vehicle fleet composition): a statistical analysis of a large BTEX dataset including multi-year and multi-site measurements (traffic, background, tunnel) and a coupled experimental and modelling analysis of liquid and headspace composition of representative fuels distributed in Ile de France region (SP95, SP95 E10, and SP98). For the latter the experimental set-up was designed to analyze the composition of 87 VOCs from C2 to C17 in both liquid and headspace phases. The model is able to predict the headspace composition at ± 15% and with an R2 > 0.9. First a strong positive spatial gradient in BTEX composition at traffic stations is observed, with higher TEX-to-benzene ratio in Paris center compared to the suburbs and outskirts up to a factor of 2. This gradient reflects differences in fleet composition especially gasoline powered vehicles in Paris with a larger proportion of two-wheelers (15% in 2012). This gradient is also consistent with the inter-annual increase of TEX-to-benzene ratios along with the doubling of two-wheelers use and the decrease in the number of passenger cars. The gasoline evaporation model cannot solely explain the observed spatial variability. Finally, we investigated the potential contribution of two-wheelers to the aromatic enrichment in IdF region by introducing an additional unburned gasoline term to the model. The results support the suggestion that two-wheelers are a potential contributor to this enrichment. Considering the high use of two-wheelers in other European cities such as London or Barcelona if Europe is to decrease transport-related air pollution and inner city traffic, policy makers should consider finding alternatives to the conventionally-powered two-wheelers and supporting electric two-wheelers for example. Abstract

We applied the positive matrix factorization model to two large data sets collected during two intensive measurement campaigns (summer 2011 and winter 2012) at a sub-urban site in Beirut, Lebanon, in order to identify NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbons) sources and quantify their contribution to ambient levels. Six factors were identified in winter and five factors in summer. PMF-resolved source profiles were consistent with source profiles established by near-field measurements. The major sources were traffic-related emissions (combustion and gasoline evaporation) in winter and in summer accounting for 51 and 74 wt %, respectively, in agreement with the national emission inventory. The gasoline evaporation related to traffic source had a significant contribution regardless of the season (22 wt % in winter and 30 wt % in summer). The NMHC emissions from road transport are estimated from observations and PMF results, and compared to local and global emission inventories. The PMF analysis finds reasonable differences on emission rates, of 20–39 % higher than the national road transport inventory. However, global inventories (ACCMIP, EDGAR, MACCity) underestimate the emissions up to a factor of 10 for the transportation sector. When combining emission inventory to our results, there is strong evidence that control measures in Lebanon should be targeted on mitigating the NMHC emissions from the traffic-related sources. From a global perspective, an assessment of VOC (volatile organic compounds) anthropogenic emission inventories for the Middle East region as a whole seems necessary as these emissions could be much higher than expected at least from the road transport sector.

11. Aerosol distribution over the western Mediterranean basin during a Tramontane/Mistral event

Abstract

This paper investigates experimentally and numerically the time evolution of the spatial distribution of aerosols over the Western Mediterranean basin during the 24 March 1998 Mistral event documented during the FETCH experiment. Mistral and Tramontane are very frequently northerly wind storms (5–15 days per month) accelerated along the Rh\^one and Aude valleys (France) that can transport natural and anthropogenic aerosols offshore as far as a few hundred kilometers, which can, in turn, have an impact on the radiation budget over the Mediterranean Sea and on precipitation. The spatial distribution of aerosols was documented by means of the airborne lidar LEANDRE-2 and space-borne radiometer SeaWIFS, and a validated mesoscale chemical simulation using the chemistry-transport model CHIMERE with an aerosol module, forced by the non-hydrostatic model MM5. This study shows that: (1) the Mistral and Tramontane contribute to the offshore exportation of a large amount of aerosols originally emitted over continental Europe (in particular, ammonium nitrate in the particulate phase and sulfates) and along the shore from the industrialized and urban areas of Fos-Berre/Marseille. The amount of aerosol loading solely due to the Mistral and Tramontane is as large as 3–4 times the background aerosol amount and the contribution of sea-salt particles to the total aerosol loading and optical depth ranges from 1 to 10% even in such stormy conditions; (2) the aerosol concentration pattern is very unsteady as a result of the time evolution of the two winds (or Genoa cyclone position): The Tramontane wind prevails in the morning hours of 24 March, leaving room for the Mistral wind and an unusually strong Ligurian outflow in the afternoon. The Genoa surface low contributes to advect the aerosols along a cyclonic trajectory that skirts the North African coast and reaches Italy. The wakes trailing downstream the Massif Central and the Alps prevent any horizontal diffusion of the aerosols and can, at times, contribute to aerosol stagnation.

Abstract

Introduction During the cancer treatment path, cancer patients use numerous drugs, including anticancer, supportive, and other prescribed medications, along with herbs and certain products. This puts them at risk of significant drug interactions (DIs). This study describes DIs in cancer patients and their prevalence and predictors. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used to achieve the study objectives. The study was carried out in two centers in the northern West Bank, Palestine. The Lexicomp® Drug Interactions tool (Lexi-Comp, Hudson OH, USA) was applied to check the potential DIs. In addition, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to show the results and find the associations. Results The final analysis included 327 patients. Most of the participants were older than 50 years (61.2%), female (68.5%), and had a solid tumor (74.6%). The total number of potential DIs was 1753, including 1510 drug-drug interactions (DDIs), 24 drug-herb interactions, and 219 drug-food interactions. Importantly, the prevalence of DDIs was 88.1%. In multivariate analysis, the number of potential DDIs significantly decreased with the duration of treatment (p = 0.007), while it increased with the number of comorbidities (p p Conclusions We found a high prevalence of DIs among cancer patients. This required health care providers to develop a comprehensive protocol to monitor and evaluate DIs by improving doctor-pharmacist communication and supporting the role of clinical pharmacists.

Abstract

Physical review / D 88(4), 042004 (2013). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.88.042004, We report on the measurement of the all-particle cosmic ray energy spectrum with the IceTop air shower array in the energy range from 1.58 PeV to 1.26 EeV. The IceTop air shower array is the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographical South Pole. The analysis was performed using only information from IceTop. The data used in this work were taken from June 1, 2010 to May 13, 2011. During that period the IceTop array consisted of 73 stations, compared to 81 in its final configuration. The measured spectrum exhibits a clear deviation from a single power law above the knee around 4 PeV and below 1 EeV. We observe spectral hardening around 18 PeV and steepening around 130 PeV., Published by Soc., [S.l.]

Abstract

Electricity production via renewable energies is considered to be a suitable solution in the short and long term, since fossil fuels are doomed to exhaustion. The aim of this study is to conduct energy, economic and environmental (3E) analysis for an autonomous hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) composed of a wind and solar photovoltaic systems. In this article, HOMER Pro software is adopted for economic evaluation and optimization. The simulations were carried out for a total of 24 selected cities distributed in different climatic regions for a comprehensive assessment approach. The meteorological data for these cites was generated by the NASA platform. The daily energy load of 319.35 kWh/day was used for a typical village in the Fez-Meknes region with a peak power of 30.89 kW. The examined levelized cost of energy ranged between 0.32 $/kWh and 0.171 $/kWh. The lowest levelized cost of energy was predicted for Eddakhla city. The energy shares in this site were to be 25.6% and 74.4%, respectively for the wind turbine system and the PV field. The HRES saves 128.21 tonnes of CO2 release in the city of Eddakhala. This type of projects will enable Morocco to increase its energy independence and supports its national strategy. Furthermore, these projects can promote the socioeconomic development in remote and isolated sites and can be widespread in the African continent, especially with the decreasing costs of renewable energy equipment.

Abstract

Besides their impacts on health, BTEX play an important role in the formation of secondary organic aerosols and ozone for which limit values are regularly exceeded in Paris megacity and Ile de France region. An enrichment by a factor of 3 in the C7C9 aromatic fraction in the Paris atmosphere compared to other northern mid-latitude cities was shown in 2013. Here, we combined different approaches to investigate the role of transport-related sources in such enrichment (gasoline composition and vehicle fleet composition): a statistical analysis of a large BTEX dataset including multi-year and multi-site measurements (traffic, background, tunnel) and a coupled experimental and modelling analysis of liquid and headspace composition of representative fuels distributed in Ile de France region (SP95, SP95 E10, and SP98). For the latter the experimental set-up was designed to analyze the composition of 87 VOCs from C2 to C17 in both liquid and headspace phases. The model is able to predict the headspace composition at ± 15% and with an R2 > 0.9. First a strong positive spatial gradient in BTEX composition at traffic stations is observed, with higher TEX-to-benzene ratio in Paris center compared to the suburbs and outskirts up to a factor of 2. This gradient reflects differences in fleet composition especially gasoline powered vehicles in Paris with a larger proportion of two-wheelers (15% in 2012). This gradient is also consistent with the inter-annual increase of TEX-to-benzene ratios along with the doubling of two-wheelers use and the decrease in the number of passenger cars. The gasoline evaporation model cannot solely explain the observed spatial variability. Finally, we investigated the potential contribution of two-wheelers to the aromatic enrichment in IdF region by introducing an additional unburned gasoline term to the model. The results support the suggestion that two-wheelers are a potential contributor to this enrichment. Considering the high use of two-wheelers in other European cities such as London or Barcelona if Europe is to decrease transport-related air pollution and inner city traffic, policy makers should consider finding alternatives to the conventionally-powered two-wheelers and supporting electric two-wheelers for example. Abstract

Accurate and rapid determination of near-surface wind fields in a complex area (orography, inhomogeneous surface properties) is a challenge for applications like the evaluation of wind energy production, the prediction of pollution transport and hazardous conditions for aeronautics and ship navigation, or the estimation of damage to farm plantations, among others. This paper presents a statistical downscaling approach based on generalized additive models that provides accurate, rapid and relatively transparent simulations of local-scale near-surface wind field based on a method calibrated on both large-scale upper air and surface atmospheric fields. Our statistical method is used to downscale near-surface wind components to weather surface stations in southern France from ERA-40 reanalyses between 1991 and 2001. The region of interest is characterized by the presence of major mountain ranges which play a major role in redirecting large-scale circulations making difficult the prediction of local wind. This study compares the performance of our statistical approach with different sets of explanatory variables, to explain the near-surface wind field variability. The performances are interpreted by evaluating the contribution of the explanatory variables in the equations of motion. This approach generates accurate depictions of the local surface wind field, and allows to go one step further in statistical wind speed downscaling. Indeed, it is adapted to explain wind components and not only wind speed and energy in contrast to past studies and it is suited for complex terrain and robust to time averaging in this region.

Abstract

Experimental tests were performed to study the effects of shading for different string inside the photovoltaic (PV) panels, power equipped with different number of diodes from the same manufacturer as of solar panel. The IV curve for all cases were recorded to see how the bypass diodes will reduce the effects of shading .The case for 3 by pass diode show the best performance of solar PV module under shading phenomena.

Abstract

We report on the observation of a significant deficit of cosmic rays from the direction of the Moon with the IceCube detector. The study of this "Moon shadow" is used to characterize the angular resolution and absolute pointing capabilities of the detector. The detection is based on data taken in two periods before the completion of the detector: between April 2008 and May 2009, when IceCube operated in a partial configuration with 40 detector strings deployed in the South Pole ice, and between May 2009 and May 2010 when the detector operated with 59 strings. Using two independent analysis methods, the Moon shadow has been observed to high significance (> 6 sigma) in both detector configurations. The observed location of the shadow center is within 0.2 degrees of its expected position when geomagnetic deflection effects are taken into account. This measurement validates the directional reconstruction capabilities of IceCube., Submitted to Physical Review D

Abstract

The IceCube project has transformed one cubic kilometer of deep natural Antarctic ice into a Cherenkov detector. Muon neutrinos are detected and their direction inferred by mapping the light produced by the secondary muon track inside the volume instrumented with photomultipliers. Reconstructing the muon track from the observed light is challenging due to noise, light scattering in the ice medium, and the possibility of simultaneously having multiple muons inside the detector, resulting from the large flux of cosmic ray muons. This manuscript describes work on two problems: (1) the track reconstruction problem, in which, given a set of observations, the goal is to recover the track of a muon; and (2) the coincident event problem, which is to determine how many muons are active in the detector during a time window. Rather than solving these problems by developing more complex physical models that are applied at later stages of the analysis, our approach is to augment the detectors early reconstruction with data filters and robust statistical techniques. These can be implemented at the level of on-line reconstruction and, therefore, improve all subsequent reconstructions. Using the metric of median angular resolution, a standard metric for track reconstruction, we improve the accuracy in the initial reconstruction direction by 13%. Abstract

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric electron neutrino flux in the energy range between approximately 80 GeV and 6 TeV, using data recorded during the first year of operation of IceCube's DeepCore low energy extension. Techniques to identify neutrinos interacting within the DeepCore volume and veto muons originating outside the detector are demonstrated. A sample of 1029 events is observed in 281 days of data, of which 496 $\pm$ 66(stat.) $\pm$ 88(syst.) are estimated to be cascade events, including both electron neutrino and neutral current events. The rest of the sample includes residual backgrounds due to atmospheric muons and charged current interactions of atmospheric muon neutrinos. The flux of the atmospheric electron neutrinos is consistent with models of atmospheric neutrinos in this energy range. This constitutes the first observation of electron neutrinos and neutral current interactions in a very large volume neutrino telescope optimized for the TeV energy range., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (accepted by PRL)

Abstract

We have performed a search for muon neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the center of the Sun with the 79-string configuration of the IceCube neutrino telescope. For the first time, the DeepCore sub-array is included in the analysis, lowering the energy threshold and extending the search to the austral summer. The 317 days of data collected between June 2010 and May 2011 are consistent with the expected background from atmospheric muons and neutrinos. Upper limits are therefore set on the dark matter annihilation rate, with conversions to limits on spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-proton cross-sections for WIMP masses in the range 20 - 5000 GeV. These are the most stringent spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross-sections limits to date above 35 GeV., 7 pages, 3 figues

Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, approximately 1 km^3 in size, is now complete with 86 strings deployed in the Antarctic ice. IceCube detects the Cherenkov radiation emitted by charged particles passing through or created in the ice. To realize the full potential of the detector, the properties of light propagation in the ice in and around the detector must be well understood. This report presents a new method of fitting the model of light propagation in the ice to a data set of in-situ light source events collected with IceCube. The resulting set of derived parameters, namely the measured values of scattering and absorption coefficients vs. depth, is presented and a comparison of IceCube data with simulations based on the new model is shown. Abstract

We report on the observation of two neutrino-induced events which have an estimated deposited energy in the IceCube detector of 1.04 $\pm$ 0.16 and 1.14 $\pm$ 0.17 PeV, respectively, the highest neutrino energies observed so far. These events are consistent with fully contained particle showers induced by neutral-current $\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$ ($\bar\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$) or charged-current $\nu_{e}$ ($\bar\nu_{e}$) interactions within the IceCube detector. The events were discovered in a search for ultra-high energy neutrinos using data corresponding to 615.9 days effective livetime. The expected number of atmospheric background is $0.082 \pm 0.004 \text{(stat)}^{+0.041}_{-0.057} \text{(syst)}$. The probability to observe two or more candidate events under the atmospheric background-only hypothesis is $2.9\times10^{-3}$ ($2.8\sigma$) taking into account the uncertainty on the expected number of background events. These two events could be a first indication of an astrophysical neutrino flux, the moderate significance, however, does not permit a definitive conclusion at this time., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We present the first results in the search for relativistic magnetic monopoles with the IceCube detector, a subsurface neutrino telescope located in the South Polar ice cap containing a volume of 1 km$^{3}$. This analysis searches data taken on the partially completed detector during 2007 when roughly 0.2 km$^{3}$ of ice was instrumented. The lack of candidate events leads to an upper limit on the flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles of $\Phi_{\mathrm{90%C.L.}}\sim 3\e{-18}\fluxunits$ for $\beta\geq0.8$. This is a factor of 4 improvement over the previous best experimental flux limits up to a Lorentz boost $\gamma$ below $10^{7}$. Abstract

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory and its prototype, AMANDA, were built in South Pole ice, using powerful hot-water drills to cleanly bore>100 holes to depths up to 2500 m. The construction of these particle physics detectors provided a unique opportunity to examine the deep ice sheet using a variety of novel techniques. We made high-resolution particulate profiles with a laser dust logger in eight of the boreholes during detector commissioning between 2004 and 2010. The South Pole laser logs are among the most clearly resolved measurements of Antarctic dust strata during the last glacial period and can be used to reconstruct paleoclimate records in exceptional detail. Here we use manual and algorithmic matching to synthesize our South Pole measurements with ice-core and logging data from Dome C, East Antarctica. We derive impurity concentration, precision chronology, annual-layer thickness, local spatial variability, and identify several widespread volcanic ash depositions useful for dating. We also examine the interval around ∼74 ka recently isolated with radiometric dating to bracket the Toba (Sumatra) supereruption.

Abstract

Gamma-ray induced air showers are notable for their lack of muons, compared to hadronic showers. Hence, air shower arrays with large underground muon detectors can select a sample greatly enriched in photon showers by rejecting showers containing muons. IceCube is sensitive to muons with energies above ~500 GeV at the surface, which provides an efficient veto system for hadronic air showers with energies above 1 PeV. One year of data from the 40-string IceCube configuration was used to perform a search for point sources and a Galactic diffuse signal. No sources were found, resulting in a 90% C.L. upper limit on the ratio of gamma rays to cosmic rays of 1.2 x 10^(-3)for the flux coming from the Galactic Plane region (-80 deg < l < -30 deg; -10 deg < b < 5 deg) in the energy range 1.2 - 6.0 PeV. In the same energy range, point source fluxes with E^(-2) spectra have been excluded at a level of (E/TeV)^2 d��/dE ~ 10^(-12)-10^(-11) cm^2/s/TeV depending on source declination. The complete IceCube detector will have a better sensitivity, due to the larger detector size, improved reconstruction and vetoing techniques. Preliminary data from the nearly-final IceCube detector configuration has been used to estimate the 5 year sensitivity of the full detector. Abstract

International audience; We present a statistical method to reconstruct continuous atmospheric fields on various pressure levels, given a constraint at the surface. The method is based on analogues of circulation and taking into consideration the time sequence of the analogues. The method is tested on the 2001-2011 period, with an emphasis on the year 2010. We base the atmospheric reconstruction on reanalysis data from 1948 to 2000, and use a constraint of sea-level pressure for 2001-2011. The pattern correlation scores appear to be significant most of the time, although score flaws are occasionally detected. Those flaws are mainly due to the time continuity constraint that is imposed on the reconstruction, which lowers the possibility of finding matching analogues. This method offers an ensemble of atmospheric reconstructions, and presents a computationally cheap alternative to data assimilation for a climate model, although with lower scores. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, is an air shower array with an area of 1 km2. The detector allows a detailed exploration of the mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range from about 100 TeV to 1 EeV by exploiting the correlation between the shower energy measured in IceTop and the energy deposited by muons in the deep ice. In this paper we report on the technical design, construction and installation, the trigger and data acquisition systems as well as the software framework for calibration, reconstruction and simulation. Abstract

Astroparticle physics 42, 15 - 32 (2013). doi:10.1016/j.astropartphys.2012.11.003, The mass composition of high energy cosmic rays depends on their production, acceleration, and propagation. The study of cosmic ray composition can therefore reveal hints of the origin of these particles. At the South Pole, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory is capable of measuring two components of cosmic ray air showers in coincidence: the electromagnetic component at high altitude (2835 m) using the IceTop surface array, and the muonic component above ∼1 TeV using the IceCube array. This unique detector arrangement provides an opportunity for precision measurements of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition in the region of the knee and beyond. Abstract

International audience; In this article, we propose a new stochastic downscaling method: provided a numerical prediction of wind at large scale, we aim to improve the approximation at small scales thanks to a local stochastic model. We first recall the framework of a Lagrangian stochastic model borrowed from S.B. Pope. Then, we adapt it to our meteorological framework, both from the theoretical and numerical viewpoints. Finally, we present some promising numerical results corresponding to the simulation of wind over the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract

International audience; A Lagrangian stochastic model is introduced in order to describe the local behavior of the wind. Based on some MM5 data, and thanks to particles driven by stochastic differential equations, we propose a numerical method allowing to improve the MM5 simulations at small scales, without requiring too much additional computational cost.

Abstract

Abstract Cancer patients experience psychological symptoms such as depression during the cancer treatment period, which increases the burden of symptoms. Depression severity can be assessed using the beck depression inventory (BDI II). The purpose of the study was to use BDI-II scores to measure depression symptoms in cancer patients at a large tertiary hospital in Palestine. A convenience sample of 271 cancer patients was used for a cross-sectional survey. There are descriptions of demographic, clinical, and lifestyle aspects. In addition, the BDI-II is a tool for determining the severity of depression. Two hundred seventy-one patients participated in the survey, for a 95% response rate. Patients ranged in age from 18 to 84 years, with an average age of 47 years. The male-to-female ratio was approximately 1:1, and 59.4% of the patients were outpatients, 153 (56.5%) of whom had hematologic malignancies. Most cancer patients (n = 104, 38.4%) had minimal depression, while 22.5%, 22.1%, and 17.0% had mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. Education level, economic status, smoking status, and age were significantly associated with depression. The BDI-II is a useful instrument for monitoring depressive symptoms. The findings support the practice of routinely testing cancer patients for depressive symptoms as part of standard care and referring patients who are at a higher risk of developing psychological morbidity to specialists for treatment as needed.

Abstract

Abstract Background Nutritional impact symptoms (NISs) are proposed to be a key indicator of decreased dietary intake in patients with solid cancer. Cancer patients frequently experience NIS from the disease itself and from disease treatment side effects that impact oral and gastrointestinal health. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between NIS and dietary intake among cancer patients in the Nablus district, one of the largest districts in Palestine. This study also sought to identify the types of treatment and other factors related to dietary intake for solid cancer patients. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted between October 15, 2021, and October 15, 2022. The convenience sampling technique was used to recruit participants from two primary hospital campuses for cancer treatment in the entire region of Nablus Governorate in northern Palestine. To assess the patients, structured questionnaires completed by interviewers during face-to-face interviews with patients were used. The NIS was assessed using a checklist developed based on a literature review and clinical experience. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the correlations between sociodemographic variables and clinical variables and between the NIS and dietary intake. Multiple binary logistic regression analyses were also performed to determine the most influential variables, sociodemographic, clinical, and NIS, on dietary intake. Results Data were collected from 290 patients with solid malignancies. The mean age of the participants was 55.04 ± 12.76 years. Abstract

We present the first statistically significant detection of neutrino oscillations in the high-energy regime ($>$ 20 GeV) from an analysis of IceCube Neutrino Observatory data collected in 2010-2011. This measurement is made possible by the low energy threshold of the DeepCore detector ($\sim 20$ GeV) and benefits from the use of the IceCube detector as a veto against cosmic ray-induced muon background. The oscillation signal was detected within a low-energy muon neutrino sample (20 -- 100 GeV) extracted from data collected by DeepCore. A high-energy muon neutrino sample (100 GeV -- 10 TeV) was extracted from IceCube data to constrain systematic uncertainties. Disappearance of low-energy upward-going muon neutrinos was observed, and the non-oscillation hypothesis is rejected with more than $5\sigma$ significance. In a two-neutrino flavor formalism, our data are best described by the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters $\Delta m^2_{23}= (2.3^{+0.6}_{-0.5})\cdot 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2(2 \theta_{23})>0.93$, and maximum mixing is favored., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract

Physical review / D 88(12), 122001 (2013). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.88.122001, We present the results of a first search for self-annihilating dark matter in nearby galaxies and galaxy clusters using a sample of high-energy neutrinos acquired in 339.8 days of live time during 2009/10 with the IceCube neutrino observatory in its 59-string configuration. The targets of interest include the Virgo and Coma galaxy clusters, the Andromeda galaxy, and several dwarf galaxies. We obtain upper limits on the cross section as a function of the weakly interacting massive particle mass between 300 GeV and 100 TeV for the annihilation into bb¯, W+W−, τ+τ−, μ+μ−, and νν¯. Abstract

Abstract Background Pseudomonas infections are among the most common infections encountered in hospitalized patients, especially those with chronic illnesses or an immunocompromised state. Management of these infections has become challenging due to increased antibiotic resistance. Therefore, this study examines the antibiotic resistance profiles of Pseudomonas spp. and the associated factors among patients admitted to a large tertiary hospital in a developing country. Methods This retrospective observational chart review study assessed patients admitted to a large tertiary hospital in a developing country with a positive culture growth of Pseudomonas from anybody site. Antibiotic susceptibility of the isolated Pseudomonas and patient characteristics were studied from the start of 2021 to the end of 2022. The study ground consisted of 185 patients. Results The study included 185 patients with positive Pseudomonas isolates. Males constituted 54.6% of the sample, while 45.4% were females. The median age of the patients was 53 years. Patient comorbidities and risk factors for Pseudomonas infection and multidrug resistance were assessed. Antibiotic resistance to the Pseudomonas regimens showed the highest resistance to meropenem and ciprofloxacin (23.4%, similarly) among isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was found in 108 (58.4%) isolates. The most commonly used antibiotic for treatment was piperacillin-tazobactam, accounting for 33.3% of cases, followed by aminoglycosides at 26.6%. Conclusions Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were resistant to meropenem and ciprofloxacin. Over half of the isolates were multidrug-resistant, which was worrying. Piperacillin-tazobactam and aminoglycosides were the most often utilized antibiotics, highlighting the significance of susceptibility testing. Implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs and infection control measures can help reduce drug resistance and improve outcomes in Pseudomonas infections.

Abstract

Abstract Palliative care is critical to redundancy in cancer patients seeking to improve their quality of life. Evaluation should be incorporated into clinical practice routines at all stages of cancer. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) was used to rate the intensity of ten symptom evaluations designed and validated for cancer patients in various languages and cultures. Therefore, the study aims to assess the symptoms reported using ESAS scores to identify patients who would benefit from palliative care that can improve the integration of palliative care into standard cancer care at An-Najah National University Hospital (NNUH). A cross-sectional study was selected for 271 cancer patients using a convenience sampling method at NNUH. Demographic, clinical, and lifestyle characteristics are described. Furthermore, patients' moderate to severe symptoms (score > 4) were obtained using ESAS-R. The survey consisted of 271 patients, with a response rate of 95%. The average age of the patients was 47 ± 17.7 years, ranging from 18 to 84 years. The male-to-female ratio was approximately 1:1, 59.4% of the patients were outpatients, and 153 (56.5%) had hematologic malignancies. Fatigue (62.7%) and drowsiness (61.6%) were the most common moderate to severe symptoms in ESAS. Furthermore, pain (54.6%), nausea (40.2%), lack of appetite (55.0%), shortness of breath (28.5%), depression (40.6%), anxiety (47.2%) and poor well-being (56.5%) were reported. In conclusion, fatigue and drowsiness were the most reported symptoms according to the ESAS scale among cancer patients, while moderate to severe symptoms were reported in cancer patients using the ESAS. The ESAS is a functional tool for assessing cancer patients' symptoms and establishing palliative care services.

Abstract

While conventional medicine has advanced in recent years, there are still concerns about its potential adverse reactions. The ethnopharmacological knowledge established over many centuries and the existence of a variety of metabolites have made medicinal plants, such as the stinging nettle plant, an invaluable resource for treating a wide range of health conditions, considering its minimal adverse effects on human health. The aim of this review is to highlight the therapeutic benefits and biological activities of the edible Urtica dioica (UD) plant with an emphasis on its selective chemo-preventive properties against various types of cancer, whereby we decipher the mechanism of action of UD on various cancers including prostate, breast, leukemia, and colon in addition to evaluating its antidiabetic, microbial, and inflammatory properties. We further highlight the systemic protective effects of UD on the liver, reproductive, excretory, cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems. We present a critical assessment of the results obtained from in vitro and in vivo studies as well as clinical trials to highlight the gaps that require further exploration for future prospective studies.

Highly resolved measurements of primary and secondary oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) by proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and the AMOVOC sampler (Airborne Measurements Of VOC) were performed in Beirut, Lebanon, during the ECOCEM (Emissions and Chemistry of Organic Carbon in the East Mediterranean) experiments. The OVOC concentrations (0.15-7.0 ppb) rival those reported for international megacities like Paris, Tokyo, or São Paulo (0.3-6.5 ppb). This study highlights the seasonal variability of OVOCs, the potential role of background pollution on OVOC concentrations, traffic emissions of OVOCs, and the secondary production of OVOCs during both summer and winter. The primary and secondary OVOC fractions were estimated using two methods based on the night-time emission ratio and photochemical age. Our calculations coupled with a correlation analysis revealed the following: firstly, background concentrations contributed significantly, especially for longer-lived OVOCs, such as methanol and acetone (30%-80%). Secondly, secondary production in summer increased up to 60%, except for methanol and isoprene oxidation products, i.e., for methacrolein and methyl vinyl ketone. Thirdly, the secondary production in the Eastern Mediterranean persisted in winter, and finally, strong primary traffic emissions dominated the primary biogenic emissions. Finally, the emission ratios were used to evaluate the global anthropogenic emission inventories downscaled to Lebanon. Although limited to two individual non-lumped species (formaldehyde and acetone), the emission ratios compared well, within a factor of 2. However, the emissions of aldehydes and ketones from the CAMS, Edgar, and MACCITY inventories showed discrepancies of up to three orders of magnitude. Abstract

This study addressed the scarcity of NH 3 measurements in urban Europe and the diverse monitoring protocols, hindering direct data comparison. Sixty-nine datasets from Finland, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK across various site types, including industrial (IND, 8), traffic (TR, 12), urban (UB, 22), suburban (SUB, 12), and regional background (RB, 15), are analyzed to this study. Among these, 26 sites provided 5, or more, years of data for time series analysis. Despite varied protocols, necessitating future harmonization, the average NH 3 concentration across sites reached 8.0 ± 8.9 μg/m 3 . Excluding farming/agricultural hotspots (FAHs), IND and TR sites had the highest concentrations (4.7 ± 3.2 and 4.5 ± 1.0 μg/m 3 ), followed by UB, SUB, and RB sites (3.3 ± 1.5, 2.7 ± 1.3, and 1.0 ± 0.3 μg/m 3 , respectively) indicating that industrial, traffic, and other urban sources were primary contributors to NH 3 outside FAH regions. When referring exclusively to the FAHs, concentrations ranged from 10.0 ± 2.3 to 15.6 ± 17.2 μg/m 3 , with the highest concentrations being reached in RB sites close to the farming and agricultural sources, and that, on average for FAHs there is a decreasing NH 3 concentration gradient towards the city. Time trends showed that over half of the sites (18/26) observed statistically significant trends. Approximately 50 % of UB and TR sites showed a decreasing trend, while 30 % an increasing one. Meta-analysis revealed a small insignificant decreasing trend for non-FAH RB sites. In FAHs, there was a significant upward trend at a rate of 3.51[0.45,6.57]%/yr. Seasonal patterns of NH 3 concentrations varied, with urban areas experiencing fluctuations influenced by surrounding emissions, particularly in FAHs. Diel variation showed differing patterns at urban monitoring sites, all with higher daytime concentrations, but with variations in peak times depending on major emission sources and meteorological patterns. Introduction: The COVID-19-related restrictions imposed to reduce viral transmission have highlighted the need to support the importance of maternal breastfeeding. Clear guidelines for consistent practices across settings have been drawn up on the basis of the best available data. Emerging recommendations call to increase nurses' and midwives' awareness of these guidelines., Objective: This study aimed to explore nurses' and midwives' awareness of the recommended breastfeeding practices and associated factors in Jordan during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: An online descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted. This study was conducted in clinical settings representing Jordan's North, Middle, and Southern regions. One hundred seventy nurses and midwives were selected through a convenient sampling technique., Results: The mean total score of the awareness was 7.78 (SD = 1.60); 62.9% of participants were highly aware of the recommended breastfeeding practices. Nurses and midwives who were aware of the recommended breastfeeding practices during the pandemic of COVID-19 (90.7%) were more likely to perceive COVID-19 preventive measures as effective than those who were not aware of breastfeeding practices (74.6%) (χ 2  = 7.886, p  = .005), while work experience in years (χ 2  = 8.966, p  < .01) was significantly associated with awareness of the breastfeeding recommended practices., Conclusion: Most Jordanain nurses and midwives were highly aware of the recommended breastfeeding practices during COVID-19 pandemic. This awareness was positively associated with working experience and perceiving that the preventive measures of COVID-19 are effective. Abstract

Cancer patients are at higher risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Several risk assessment models (RAM), including the Khorana and COMPASS-CAT, were developed to help predict the occurrence of VTE in cancer patients on active anti-cancer therapy. We aim to study the prevalence and predictors of VTE among patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and compare both RAMs in predicting VTE in patients with NSCLC were retrospectively reviewed. Variables known to increase the risk of VTE were collected and risk of VTE was assessed using both Khorana and COMPASS-CAT RAM. A total of 508 patients (mean age ± SD, 58.4 ± 12.2 years) were enrolled. Most (n = 357, 70.3%) patients had adenocarcinoma, and 333 (65.6%) patients had metastatic disease. VTE were confirmed in 76 (15.0%) patients. Rates were higher among patients with metastatic disease (19.8%, p < 0.001), adenocarcinoma (17.4%, p = 0.01) and those treated with immunotherapy (23.5%, p = 0.014). VTE rates were 21.2%, 14.1% and 13.9% among those with high (n = 66), intermediate (n = 341) and low (n = 101) Khorana risk scores, respectively (p = 0.126). On the other hand, 190 (37.4%) were classified as high risk by the COMPASS-CAT RAM; 52 (27.4%) of them had VTE compared to 24 (7.5%) of the remaining 318 (62.6%) classified as Low/Intermediate risk level, p < 0.001. In conclusion, patients with NSCLC are at high risk for VTE, especially those with adenocarcinoma, metastatic disease and when treated with immunotherapy. Compared to Khorana RAM, COMPASS-CAT RAM was better in identifying more patients in high-risk group, with higher VTE rate., (© 2023. Abstract

Aim: The study aims to explore the predictors of the quality of life of caregivers of women receiving cancer treatment in Turkey., Method: This study was conducted in a Medical-Oncology inpatient clinic of a University Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, between February and June 2020. Descriptive data were collected from 128 family caregivers using caregiver and patient identification forms and the quality of life scale- family version. Bivariate analyses and multiple regression were used to analyze the data., Results: The mean score of the quality of life was 4.41 (standard deviation=0.63). A backward multiple regression revealed that being female caregivers, increased time spent for care per day, and caring for women with metastatic cancer were factors associated with poor quality of life., Conclusion: Although caregiving responsibilities bring challenges to every caregiver, those who are at high risk for impaired quality of life during caregiving need further support in their caregiving to maintain quality of life. Further research should focus on finding solutions to better support caregivers who are experiencing impairment in their quality of life.
