1. Mulan: a part-per-million measurement of the muon lifetime and determination of the Fermi constant

Abstract: The part-per-million measurement of the positive muon lifetime and determination of the Fermi constant by the MuLan experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute is reviewed. The experiment used an innovative, time-structured, surface muon beam and a near-4\piπ, finely-segmented, plastic scintillator positron detector. Two in-vacuum muon stopping targets were used: a ferromagnetic foil with a large internal magnetic field, and a quartz crystal in a moderate external magnetic field. The experiment acquired a dataset of 1.6 \times 10^{12}1.6×1012 positive muon decays and obtained a muon lifetime \tau_{\mu} = 2\, 196\, 980.3(2.2)τμ=2196980.3(2.2)~ps (1.0~ppm) and Fermi constant G_F = 1.166\, 378\, 7(6) \times 10^{-5}F=1.1663787(6)×10−5 GeV^{-2}−2 (0.5~ppm). The thirty-fold improvement in \tau_{\mu}τμ has proven valuable for precision measurements in nuclear muon capture and the commensurate improvement in G_FF has proven valuable for precision tests of the standard model.

Abstract: The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. Abstract: The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

Abstract: This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $\omega_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $\omega_a^m$., Comment: 35 pages, 29 figures. Abstract: A single calorimeter station for the Muon g − 2 experiment at Fermilab includes the following subsystems: a 54-element array of PbF 2 Cherenkov crystals read out by large-area SiPMs, bias and slow-control electronics, a suite of 800 MSPS waveform digitizers, a clock and control distribution network, a gain calibration and monitoring system, and a GPU-based front-end which is read out through a MIDAS data acquisition environment. The entire system performance was evaluated using 2.5–5 GeV electrons at the End Station Test Beam at SLAC. This paper includes a description of the individual subsystems and the results of measurements of the energy response and resolution, energy-scale stability, timing resolution, and spatial uniformity. All measured performances meet or exceed the g − 2 experimental requirements. Based on the success of the tests, the complete production of the required 24 calorimeter stations has been made and installation into the main experiment is complete. Furthermore, the calorimeter response measurements reported here informed the design of the reconstruction algorithms that are now employed in the running g − 2 experiment.

Abstract: The Fermilab muon g-2 experiment will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment aμ to 140 ppb – a four-fold improvement over the earlier Brookhaven experiment. The measurement of aμ is well known as a unique test of the standard model with broad sensitivity to new interactions, particles and phenomena. The goal of 140 ppb is commensurate with ongoing improvements in the SM prediction of the anomalous moment and addresses the longstanding 3.5σ discrepancy between the BNL result and the SM prediction. In this article I discuss the physics motivation and experimental technique for measuring aμ, and the current status and the future work for the project.

Abstract: We describe the data acquisition system for the MuLan muon lifetime experiment at Paul Scherrer Institute. The system was designed to record muon decays at rates up to 1 MHz and acquire data at rates up to 60 MB/sec. The system employed a parallel network of dual-processor machines and repeating acquisition cycles of deadtime-free time segments in order to reach the design goals. Abstract: Background: The rate \lambda_pp\mu\ characterizes the formation of pp\mu\ molecules in collisions of muonic p\mu\ atoms with hydrogen. In measurements of the basic weak muon capture reaction on the proton to determine the pseudoscalar coupling g_P, capture occurs from both atomic and molecular states. Thus knowledge of \lambda_pp\mu\ is required for a correct interpretation of these experiments. Purpose: Recently the MuCap experiment has measured the capture rate \Lambda_S from the singlet p\mu\ atom, employing a low density active target to suppress pp\mu\ formation (PRL 110, 12504 (2013)). Nevertheless, given the unprecedented precision of this experiment, the existing experimental knowledge in \lambda_pp\mu\ had to be improved. Method: The MuCap experiment derived the weak capture rate from the muon disappearance rate in ultra-pure hydrogen. By doping the hydrogen with 20 ppm of argon, a competing process to pp\mu\ formation was introduced, which allowed the extraction of \lambda_pp\mu\ from the observed time distribution of decay electrons. Results: The pp\mu\ formation rate was measured as \lambda_pp\mu = (2.01 +- 0.06(stat) +- 0.03(sys)) 10^6 s^-1. This result updates the \lambda_pp\mu\ value used in the above mentioned MuCap publication. Conclusions: The 2.5x higher precision compared to earlier experiments and the fact that the measurement was performed at nearly identical conditions to the main data taking, reduces the uncertainty induced by \lambda_pp\mu\ to a minor contribution to the overall uncertainty of \Lambda_S and g_P, as determined in MuCap. Our final value for \lambda_pp\mu\ shifts \Lambda_S and g_P by less than one tenth of their respective uncertainties compared to our results published earlier., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract: The electromagnetic calorimeter for the new muon (g-2) experiment at Fermilab will consist of arrays of PbF2 Cherenkov crystals read out by large-area silicon photo-multiplier (SiPM) sensors. We report here on measurements and simulations using 2.0 -- 4.5 GeV electrons with a 28-element prototype array. All data were obtained using fast waveform digitizers to accurately capture signal pulse shapes versus energy, impact position, angle, and crystal wrapping. The SiPMs were gain matched using a laser-based calibration system, which also provided a stabilization procedure that allowed gain correction to a level of 1e-4 per hour. After accounting for longitudinal fluctuation losses, those crystals wrapped in a white, diffusive wrapping exhibited an energy resolution sigma/E of (3.4 +- 0.1) % per sqrt(E/GeV), while those wrapped in a black, absorptive wrapping had (4.6 +- 0.3) % per sqrt(E/GeV). The white-wrapped crystals---having nearly twice the total light collection---display a generally wider and impact-position-dependent pulse shape owing to the dynamics of the light propagation, in comparison to the black-wrapped crystals, which have a narrower pulse shape that is insensitive to impact position., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures, accepted to Nucl.Instrum.Meth. Abstract: The induced pseudoscalar coupling $g_p$ is the least well known of the weak coupling constants of the proton's charged--current interaction. Its size is dictated by chiral symmetry arguments, and its measurement represents an important test of quantum chromodynamics at low energies. During the past decade a large body of new data relevant to the coupling $g_p$ has been accumulated. This data includes measurements of radiative and non radiative muon capture on targets ranging from hydrogen and few--nucleon systems to complex nuclei. Herein the authors review the theoretical underpinnings of $g_p$, the experimental studies of $g_p$, and the procedures and uncertainties in extracting the coupling from data. Abstract: The photon spectra from radiative muon capture (RMC) on O, Al, Si, Ti, Zr, and Ag have been measured for photon energies greater than 57 MeV using a cylindrical pair spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron. Values of ${R}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}},$ the ratio of the radiative rate for photon energies above 57 MeV, to the nonradiative rate, are $1.67\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.18,$ $1.40\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11,$ $2.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20,$ $1.30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12,$ $1.31\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15$, and $1.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13$, respectively, in units of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$. The Al/Si rate difference confirms an earlier result. The Ti/Ca rate difference and the rate suppression in Zr and Ag are new results which confirm that the RMC rate is a much smoother function of neutron excess than of atomic number. This suggests that Pauli blocking is relatively more important for radiative capture than for nonradiative capture. The value of the ratio of the induced weak pseudoscalar to axial coupling constants, ${g}_{p}{/g}_{a},$ for O was found to be $4.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6,$ $6.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1$, or ${8.1}_{\ensuremath{-}2.1}^{+1.8}$, depending on the theory used to extract it. These values are in good or fair agreement with the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) hypothesis. For the other nuclei studied, large model dependences or a lack of detailed RMC calculations made tests of the PCAC hypothesis difficult.

Abstract: A pure weak interaction such as muon decay μ → ev $\overline{v}$ is characterized by a V-A amplitude. When hadrons participate the strong force induces additional couplings and the reaction is classified as semi-leptonic. These additional couplings are real due to time reversal invariance. The scalar and tensor couplings are expected to vanish because these currents have the wrong G-parity and experimentally non-zero values have not been found. In beta decay n → pe $\overline{v}$ the renormalized axial vector strength, g a , and the weak magnetism strength, g m , which is predicted by CVC, are accurately measured.

Abstract: Negative muon capture in 28Si was used to determine the angular correlation between the neutrino and the 1229 keV γ-ray from the de-excitation of the 2201 keV 1+ level in 28Al. To suppress backgrounds in the HPGe detectors, a coincidence was required with the 942 keV γ-ray in the de-excitation cascade detected in a NaI array. The extracted angular correlation coefficient α is 0.360 ± 0.059, consistent with previous measurements. Using a recent shell model calculation employing a full 1s-od model space and the USD empirical interaction, this value of α implies a value for the induced pseudoscalar coupling of g p g a = 0.0 ± 3.2 , substantially smaller than the prediction of PCAC and pion-pole dominance.

Abstract: We present a detailed report of the method, setup, analysis and results of a precision measurement of the positive muon lifetime. The experiment was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute using a time-structured, nearly 100%-polarized, surface muon beam and a segmented, fast-timing, plastic scintillator array. The measurement employed two target arrangements; a magnetized ferromagnetic target with a ~4 kG internal magnetic field and a crystal quartz target in a 130 G external magnetic field. Approximately 1.6 x 10^{12} positrons were accumulated and together the data yield a muon lifetime of tau_{mu}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps (1.0 ppm), thirty times more precise than previous generations of lifetime experiments. The lifetime measurement yields the most accurate value of the Fermi constant G_F (MuLan) = 1.1663787(6) x 10^{-5} GeV^{-2} (0.5 ppm). Abstract: We report measurements of capture rates and hyperfine dependences in muon capture on {sup 23}Na to various states in Ne and F isotopes. We also report comparisons of the capture rates and hyperfine dependences for six {sup 23}Na {r_arrow} {sup 23}Ne transitions with the 1{ital s}-0{ital d} shell model with the empirical effective interaction of Brown and Wildenthal and the realistic effective interaction of Kuo and Brown. Fits to the data with the Brown and Wildenthal interaction yield an effective coupling {ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital a}} = {minus}1.01 {plus_minus} 0.07 and an effective coupling ratio {ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital p}}/{ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital a}} = 6.5 {plus_minus} 2.4. The value of {ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital a}} is consistent with values of {ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital a}} extracted from {beta}{sup +}/{beta}{sup {minus}} decay and ({ital p},{ital n})/({ital n},{ital p}) charge exchange data, and the value of {ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital p}}/{ital {tilde g}}{sub {ital a}} is consistent with the predictions of PCAC and pion-pole dominance. Abstract: We report measurements of the $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$(n,p) differential cross section at an incident energy of 198 MeV and angles from 0\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 24\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} using the TRIUMF Charge Exchange Facility. From these data we determine Gamow-Teller (GT) transition probabilities to low lying 1/${2}^{+}$, 3/${2}^{+}$, and 5/${2}^{+}$ $^{23}\mathrm{Ne}$ states and the ${\mathrm{GT}}^{+}$ strength distribution up to 25 MeV excitation energy. The values of ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{GT}}^{+}$ to discrete states, and the ${\mathrm{GT}}^{+}$ strength below 10 MeV, are found to be in reasonable agreement with a full 1s-0d shell model calculation with a normalization factor of about 0.74. The ${\mathrm{GT}}^{+}$ strength above 10 MeV suggests the removal of strength from lower to higher excitation energies. We also compare the $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$(n,p) data with $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,\ensuremath{\nu}) data and find agreement between the values of ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{GT}}^{+}$ to discrete levels extracted from the (n,p) and (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,\ensuremath{\nu}) reactions. The general consistency of the (n,p) and (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$,\ensuremath{\nu}) data, and the full 1s-0d shell model calculation, give confidence in a recent extraction of the weak pseudoscalar coupling from ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ capture on $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$. Finally, using both ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\beta}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$-decay and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ capture data, we obtain unit cross sections from the $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$(n,p) measurement.

Abstract: The MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute has measured the rate L_S of muon capture from the singlet state of the muonic hydrogen atom to a precision of 1%. A muon beam was stopped in a time projection chamber filled with 10-bar, ultra-pure hydrogen gas. Cylindrical wire chambers and a segmented scintillator barrel detected electrons from muon decay. L_S is determined from the difference between the mu- disappearance rate in hydrogen and the free muon decay rate. The result is based on the analysis of 1.2 10^10 mu- decays, from which we extract the capture rate L_S = (714.9 +- 5.4(stat) +- 5.1(syst)) s^-1 and derive the proton's pseudoscalar coupling g_P(q^2_0 = -0.88 m^2_mu) = 8.06 +- 0.55., Comment: Updated figure 1 and small changes in wording to match published version

Abstract: We report measurements of the rates and hyperfine (HF) dependences of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ capture on $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$, and the HF transition rate in Na metal. The measured capture rates are in general agreement with the predictions of the 1s-0d shell model. The measured HF dependences of the 1017 and 1823 keV \ensuremath{\gamma} rays from $^{23}\mathrm{Ne}$ yield ${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{p}}$/${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{a}}$=7.6${\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}_{2.5}^{2.1}$ and ${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{p}}$/${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{a}}$\ensuremath{\le}7.1(1\ensuremath{\sigma}), consistent with partial conservation of axial-vector current, but in disagreement with claims of an enhancement of ${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{p}}$/${\mathit{g}}_{\mathit{a}}$ in light nuclei. The measured HF transition rate ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathit{h}}$=15.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1 \ensuremath{\mu}${\mathrm{s}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ is in agreement with the theory of Auger emission but twice the rate previously obtained in NaF (a\ensuremath{\sim}3\ensuremath{\sigma} effect).

Abstract: From the time dependence of the ( μ − , nν ) reaction we have determined the hyperfine transition rates for the muonic atoms of 19 F, 23 Na, and nat Cl, obtaining Λ h =4.9±1.2 μ s −1 , 8.4±1.9 μ s −1 , and 6.5±0.9 μ s −1 , respectively. Further, from the branching ratios of the ( μ −1 , ν ) reaction on muonic 31 P we have inferred a hyperfine transition rate that is much faster than the muon disappearance rate, Λ h ⪢ Λ D . These results are in reasonable agreement with the rates calculated for Auger emission, and qualitatively confirm the correction to the muonic atom's hyperfine splitting due to the distribution of magnetism in the nucleus. The 31 P result, however, disagrees with an earlier suggestion of the inhibition of Auger emission.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the positive muon lifetime to a precision of 1.0 parts per million (ppm); it is the most precise particle lifetime ever measured. The experiment used a time-structured, low-energy muon beam and a segmented plastic scintillator array to record more than 2 x 10^{12} decays. Two different stopping target configurations were employed in independent data-taking periods. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}(MuLan) = 2196980.3(2.2) ps, more than 15 times as precise as any previous experiment. The muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi constant: G_F(MuLan) = 1.1663788 (7) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.6 ppm). Abstract: The radiative capture of negative muons by protons can be used to measure the weak induced pseu-doscalar form factor. Brief arguments why this method is preferable to ordinary muon capture are given followed by a discussion of the experimental difficulties. The solution to these problems as attempted by experiment #452 at TRIUMF is presented together with preliminary results from the first run in August 1990. An outlook on the expected final precision and the experimental schedule is also given.

Abstract: Radiative muon capture (RMC), mu Z to nu (Z-1) gamma , is a process which is particularly sensitive to the induced pseudoscalar coupling constant, g/sub p/, which is still very poorly determined experimentally. Due to the extremely small branching ratio ( approximately 6*10/sup -8/), the elementary reaction mu p to nu n gamma has never been measured. To date, efforts have been concentrated on nuclear RMC where the branching ratio is much larger, but the interpretation of these results is hindered by nuclear structure uncertainties. A measurement is being carried out at TRIUMF to determine the rate of RMC on hydrogen to a precision of 8%, leading to a determination of g/sub p/ with an error of 10%. The detection system is based on a large-volume cylindrical drift chamber, in an axial magnetic field, acting as an e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair spectrometer with a solid angle of approximately=2 pi . At a magnetic field of 2.7 kG, the acceptance of 70-MeV photons is about 0.8% for a 1.0-mm-thick Pb photon converter. Monte Carlo calculations indicate a photon energy resolution of >

Abstract: The mean life of the positive muon has been measured to a precision of 11 ppm using a low-energy, pulsed muon beam stopped in a ferromagnetic target, which was surrounded by a scintillator detector array. The result, tau_mu = 2.197013(24) us, is in excellent agreement with the previous world average. The new world average tau_mu = 2.197019(21) us determines the Fermi constant G_F = 1.166371(6) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (5 ppm). Abstract: The rate of nuclear muon capture by the proton has been measured using a new experimental technique based on a time projection chamber operating in ultra-clean, deuterium-depleted hydrogen gas at 1 MPa pressure. The capture rate was obtained from the dierence between the measured disappearance rate in hydrogen and the world average for the + decay rate. The target’s low gas density of 1% compared to liquid hydrogen is key to avoiding uncertainties that arise from the formation of muonic molecules. The capture rate from the hyperne singlet ground state of the p atom is measured to be S = 725:0 17:4 s 1 , from which the induced pseudoscalar coupling of the nucleon, g P (q 2 = 0:88m 2 ) = 7:3 1:1, is extracted. This result is consistent with theoretical predictions for gP that are based on the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD.

Abstract: We report measurements of double radiative capture in pionic hydrogen and pionic deuterium. The measurements were performed with the RMC spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron by recording photon pairs from pion stops in liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. We obtained absolute branching ratios of $(3.02 \pm 0.27 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for hydrogen and $(1.42 \pm ^{0.09}_{0.12} (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for deuterium, and relative branching ratios of double radiative capture to single radiative capture of $(7.68 \pm 0.69(stat.) \pm 0.79(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for hydrogen and $(5.44 \pm^{0.34}_{0.46}(stat.) \pm 0.42(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for deuterium. For hydrogen, the measured branching ratio and photon energy-angle distributions are in fair agreement with a reaction mechanism involving the annihilation of the incident $\pi^-$ on the $\pi^+$ cloud of the target proton. For deuterium, the measured branching ratio and energy-angle distributions are qualitatively consistent with simple arguments for the expected role of the spectator neutron. A comparison between our hydrogen and deuterium data and earlier beryllium and carbon data reveals substantial changes in the relative branching ratios and the energy-angle distributions and is in agreement with the expected evolution of the reaction dynamics from an annihilation process in S-state capture to a bremsstrahlung process in P-state capture. Abstract: We report results from shell-model studies of muon capture on $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ to low-lying levels of $^{40}\mathrm{K}$. We discuss the comparison among calculated capture rates, measured capture rates, and analogous transitions in ($e,{e}^{'}$) scattering in terms of the particle-hole structure of the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$-$^{40}\mathrm{K}$ nuclei. We highlight the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$$({0}^{+},0)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$$^{40}\mathrm{K}$$({0}^{\ensuremath{-}},2626)$ axial charge transition and its sensitivity to the induced pseudoscalar coupling ${g}_{p}$ of the proton's weak interaction. In addition, we address the hindrance of unique first-forbidden transitions due to particle-hole interactions and the emergence of allowed Gamow-Teller transitions due to ground-state correlations. Last, we examine the longitudinal alignment of $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ recoils following muon capture and discuss this possibility for independently determining the induced coupling ${g}_{p}$.

The result has striking implications for the proton's induced pseudoscalar coupling g{sub p}, changing the value of g{sub p} obtained from the most precise ordinary muon capture measurement from 10.6{+-}2.7 to 0.8{+-}2.8, and from the sole radiative muon capture measurement from 12.2{+-}1.1 to 10.6{+-}1.2, bringing the latter result closer to theoretical predictions.

Abstract: The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report measurements of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectra from muon capture on ${}^{35}\mathrm{Cl}.$ For the allowed Gamow-Teller transitions to the ${}^{35}\mathrm{S}{(2939,3/2}^{+})$ state and the ${}^{35}\mathrm{S}{(3421,5/2}^{+})$ state we obtained their capture rates, hyperfine dependences, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\char21{}\ensuremath{\nu}$ correlation coefficients. The capture rates and hyperfine dependences were compared to shell model calculations using the complete $1s\char21{}0d$ space and the universal SD interaction. With ${g}_{p}{/g}_{a}=6.7$ and ${g}_{a}=\ensuremath{-}1.00$ (or ${g}_{a}=\ensuremath{-}1.26)$ we found agreement of the model and the data at the 1\char21{}2 $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ level. However, we caution that the transitions are sensitive to $l=2$ forbidden matrix elements.

Abstract: We report the first observation of double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen. The experiment was conducted at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC spectrometer, and detected $\gamma$--ray coincidences following $\pi^-$ stops in liquid hydrogen. We found the branching ratio for double radiative capture to be $(3.05 \pm 0.27(stat.) \pm 0.31(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$. The measured branching ratio and angle-energy distributions support the theoretical prediction of a dominant contribution from the $\pi \pi \to \gamma \gamma$ annihilation mechanism., Comment: 4 Pages, 4 Figures. accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract: The hyperfine dependence of exclusive muon capture in nuclei, μ − [Z, A]→(v μ [Z−1, A] ∗ , is sensitive to the coupling constants of the proton's weak interaction, and can be measured through the capture time dependence induced by hyperfine transitions between the hyperfine states of the muonic atom. Here we report measurements of the hyperfine transition rates in μ−F, Na, and Cl, and a preliminary measurement of the capture hyperfine dependence on 23Na.

Abstract: The hyperfine (hf) transition rates for muonic atoms have been re-measured for select light nuclei, using neutron detectors to evaluate the time dependence of muon capture. For $^{19}$F $\Lambda$$_{h}$ = 5.6 (2) $\mu$s$^{-1}$ for the hf transition rate, a value which is considerably more accurate than previous measurements. Abstract: The first $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ polarization transfer measurements on a nucleus heavier than deuterium have been carried out at Jefferson Laboratory. Transverse and longitudinal components of the polarization of protons ejected in the reaction ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ were measured in quasielastic perpendicular kinematics at a ${Q}^{2}$ of 0.8 $(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ The data are in good agreement with state of the art calculations.

Abstract: Knowledge of the transition rate between the ortho- and para-molecular states of muonic molecular hydrogen is critical for the extraction of the induced pseudoscalar coupling of the proton, gp, from muon capture experiments in hydrogen. A measurement of this rate has recently been completed at TRIUMF, and a status report on the experiment is presented here.

47. Rare pion double radiative capture reactions on hydrogen and deuterium

Abstract: The rare 2-photon radiative capture reaction has been observed for the first time on hydrogen and deuterium using the RMC high acceptance cylindrical pair spectrometer at TRIUMF. Our preliminary branching ratios are 3.8×10−8 for hydrogen and 1.6×10−5 for deuterium. Our π−p data confirms the predicted dominance of the ππ→γγ annihilation mechanism. Moreover, since crossing symmetry relates ππ→γπ to γπ→γπ this threshold (π, 2γ) reaction might also provide new information on the electric polarizability of the pion. Our π−d data shows no evidence for the predicted d1*(1920) dibaryon.

Abstract: The radiative muon capture process has been observed in 3He by detecting a high-energy photon in coincidence with the recoil triton. A cylindrical pair spectrometer and a scintillating liquid 3He target were used to detect the photon and triton, respectively. The resulting photon spectrum is compared to impulse approximation calculations both with and without meson exchange corrections. The calculations over-estimate the measured spectrum by 30% and 20%, respectively. The recoil energy spectrum indicates that only 11% of the total radiative capture rate goes to final states which include deuterons and protons, with the remainder of the rate going to a triton final state.

Abstract: The first measurement of the elementary process $\mu^- p \rightarrow \nu_{\mu} n \gamma$ is reported. A photon pair spectrometer was used to measure the partial branching ratio ($2.10 \pm 0.22) \times 10^{-8}$ for photons of k > 60 MeV. The value of the weak pseudoscalar coupling constant determined from the partial branching ratio is $g_p(q^{2}=-0.88m_{\mu}^2) = (9.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.3) \cdot g_a(0)$, where the first error is the quadrature sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties and the second error is due to the uncertainty in $\lambda_{op}$, the decay rate of the ortho to para $p \mu p$ molecule.
