Abstract: We measured a set of π±Σ∓, π0Σ0, and π−Σ0 invariant mass spectra below and above the K¯N mass threshold in K−-induced reactions on deuteron. The measured πΣ mass spectral shape is well reproduced via the two-step mechanism, i.e., a neutron knocked out at a forward angle from a deuteron by an incident K−, with the K¯ recoiled backward reacting with the residual nucleon to produce π and Σ. We deduced the S-wave K¯N→πΣ and K¯N→K¯N scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a K¯N and πΣ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to Λ(1405) is located at 1417.7−7.4+6.0 (fitting errors)−1.0+1.1 (systematic errors) + [−26.1−7.9+6.0 (fitting errors)−2.0+1.7 (systematic errors)] i MeV/c2, closer to the K¯N mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Abstract: We observed a distinct peak in the Λp invariant mass spectrum of He3(K−,Λp)n, well below mK+2mp, i.e., the mass threshold of the K− to be bound to two protons. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region q=350∼650 MeV/c, one can kinematically separate the peak from the quasi-free process, K‾N→K‾N followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons K‾NN→ΛN. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit–Wigner pole position at BKpp=47±3(stat.)−6+3(sys.) MeV having a width ΓKpp=115±7(stat.)−20+10(sys.) MeV, and the S-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter QKpp=381±14(stat.)−0+57(sys.) MeV/c, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness – “K−pp”. 3. First determination of the one-proton induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay width of p-shell Λ-Hypernuclei

Abstract: Previous studies of proton and neutron spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of eight Λ-Hypernuclei (A=5–16) have been revisited. New values of the ratio of the two-nucleon and the one-proton induced decay widths, Γ2N/Γp, are obtained from single proton spectra, Γ2N/Γp=0.50±0.24, and from neutron and proton coincidence spectra, Γ2N/Γp=0.36±0.14stat−0.04sys+0.05sys, in full agreement with previously published ones. With these values, a method is developed to extract the one-proton induced decay width in units of the free Λ decay width, Γp/ΓΛ, without resorting to Intra Nuclear Cascade models but by exploiting only experimental data, under the assumption of a linear dependence on A of the Final State Interaction contribution. This is the first systematic determination ever done and it agrees within the errors with recent theoretical calculations. 4. Quantification of Species-Preferential Micropylar Chemoattraction in Arabidopsis by Fluorescein Diacetate Staining of Pollen Tubes

Abstract: Sexual reproduction between males and females of the same species is essential for species maintenance. Ovular micropylar guidance, the last step of pollen tube guidance in angiosperms, contributes to species-preferential reproduction. Previous studies using semi-in vivo attraction assays showed that species-preferential attractant peptides are secreted from the ovule through its micropyle. However, conventional semi-in vivo assays usually depend on transgenic pollen tubes expressing a fluorescent protein to determine whether the tubes are attracted to the ovule to precisely penetrate the micropyle. Here, we found that fluorescein diacetate (FDA) staining was suitable for evaluating the micropylar guidance rate of non-transgenic pollen tubes in semi-in vivo conditions. Micropylar guidance was quantified for ovules and pollen tubes of Arabidopsis thaliana and Arabidopsis lyrata by combining FDA staining with modified semi-in vivo assays. Our results using the simple staining method showed that the ovules of each species secrete species-preferential attractants, and that pollen tubes respond more strongly to attractants of their own species compared with those of closely related species. LURE-type CRP810 attractant peptides were shown to be responsible for micropylar attraction of A. thaliana in the semi-in vivo assay. The POLLEN-SPECIFIC RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE 6 (PRK6) receptor for LURE1, as well as an unidentified receptor for other LURE-type attractants, are involved in the species-preferential response of these two Arabidopsis species.

6. Deep imaging revealed dynamics and signaling in one-to-one pollen tube guidance

Abstract: In angiosperms, pollen tube guidance allows sperm cell delivery to the female gametes within the ovule, which are deeply embedded in a flower. However, when an ovary includes multiple pollen tubes and ovules, it is unclear how each ovule is fertilized one-to-one by a pollen tube. Here, our two-photon imaging revealed the pollen tube dynamics in living ovaries. The number of pollen tubes and ovule maturity affected the target selection among multiple ovules. On the inner surface of the septum epidermis within the transmitting tract, pollen tube behavior and emergence were regulated by the ovular sporophytic signals. In funicular guidance, the second pollen tube was strictly repelled by the FERONIA and LORELEI-dependent gametophytic signal, especially more than 45 minutes after the first pollen tube had passed. Such highly spatiotemporal regulation mechanisms in the one-to-one pollen tube guidance may allow angiosperms to produce more offspring in nature.

8. Preparation status of missing-mass spectroscopy for 𝚵 hypernuclei with S-2S magnetic spectrometer

Abstract: J-PARC E70 experiment measures the missing-mass of Ξ hypernuclei (12ΞBe) in Hadron Experimental Facility at J-PARC. We aim to reach the best missing-mass resolution of 2 MeV/c2 in FWHM with a new magnetic spectrometer S-2S. The high-resolution spectroscopy of Ξ hypernuclei will play an important role to understand the unknown ΞN interaction. The experiment will start at the beginning of 2023. This article presents the preparation status.

Abstract: We are planning to carry out a high-resolution spectroscopy of Ξ hypernucleus at the J-PARC K1.8 beamline, which provides a highintensity K− beam (J-PARC E70 experiment). The high-resolution spectroscopy aims to be realized by introducing a new magnetic spectrometer S-2S and an active fiber target AFT. In this article, the role of the AFT in this experiment and its development status are described.

10. X ray spectroscopy on 𝚵− atoms (J-PARC E03, E07 and future)

Abstract: X-ray spectroscopy of hadronic atoms is a powerful method to study strong interaction between hadrons and nuclei. At J-PARC, we have conducted two experiments, J-PARC E07 and E03, for hadronic atoms with a doubly strange hyperon, Ξ−, aiming at the world-first detection of their X-rays. The first measurement is performed as a byproduct of J-PARC E07 experiment with the hybrid emulsion technique. The second one, J-PARC E03, is a dedicated experiment for detection of Ξ− Fe atom X rays. The preliminary results and the present status of E07 and E03 are shown in this article. Future prospects of Ξ−-atomic X-ray spectroscopy are also discussed. A new measurement has been proposed for detecting Ξ− C atom X rays, where a novel Ξ− tracking method will be applied to realize an improved signal to noise ratio.

Abstract: We report on the first observation of γ rays emitted from an sd-shell hypernucleus, _{Λ}^{19}F. The energy spacing between the ground state doublet, 1/2^{+} and 3/2^{+} states, of _{Λ}^{19}F is determined to be 315.5±0.4(stat)_{-0.5}^{+0.6}(syst) keV by measuring the γ-ray energy of the M1(3/2^{+}→1/2^{+}) transition. In addition, three γ-ray peaks are observed and assigned as E2(5/2^{+}→1/2^{+}), E1(1/2^{-}→1/2^{+}), and E1(1/2^{-}→3/2^{+}) transitions. The excitation energies of the 5/2^{+} and 1/2^{-} states are determined to be 895.2±0.3(stat)±0.5(syst) and 1265.6±1.2(stat)_{-0.5}^{+0.7}(syst) keV, respectively. It is found that the ground state doublet spacing is well described by theoretical models based on existing s- and p-shell hypernuclear data.

Abstract: Excitation spectra of ^{11}C are measured in the ^{12}C(p,d) reaction near the η^{'} emission threshold. A proton beam extracted from the synchrotron SIS-18 at GSI with an incident energy of 2.5 GeV impinges on a carbon target. The momenta of deuterons emitted at 0° are precisely measured with the fragment separator (FRS) operated as a spectrometer. In contrast to theoretical predictions on the possible existence of deeply bound η^{'}-mesic states in carbon nuclei, no distinct structures are observed associated with the formation of bound states. The spectra are analyzed to set stringent constraints on the formation cross section and on the hitherto barely known η^{'}-nucleus interaction.

Abstract: We have performed a γ spectroscopy experiment in 11 Λ B using a germanium detector array, Hyperball. In this experiment, we have observed six γ transitions from 11 Λ B. Among these transitions, the γ ray peak at 1482 keV is identified as E2 ( 1 / 2 + → 5 / 2 + ) . The result of this experiment indicates that the level structure seems quite different from a theoretical prediction based on the results of the previous experiments.

Abstract: The present status of hypernuclear gamma-ray spectroscopy with Hyperball is summarized. We observed two gamma transitions of 16-Lambda-O(1- -> 1-,0-) and obtained the strength of the Lambda-N tensor force. In 10B(K-,pi- gamma) data, we did not observe the spin-flip M1 transition of 10-Lambda-B(2- -> 1-), but gamma rays from hyperfragments such as 7-Lambda-Li(7/2+ -> 5/2+) and 9-Lambda-Be(3/2+ ->1/2+) were observed. In 11B(pi+,K+ gamma) data, we observed six gamma transitions of 11_Lambda-B. We also attempted an inclusive gamma-ray measurement with stopped K- beam.

Abstract: Three candidate events of the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6Λ H were uniquely identified in the FINUDA experiment at DANE, Frascati, by observing π + mesons from the (K − stop,π +) production reaction on 6Li targets, in coincidence with π − mesons from 6Λ H→6He+ π − weak decay. Details of the experiment and the analysis of its data are reported, leading to an estimate of (2.9 ± 2.0) · 10−6/K − stop for the 6Λ H production rate times the two-body π − weak decay branching ratio. The 6 ΛH binding energy with respect to 5H+Λwas determined jointly from production and decay to be BΛ = (4.0±1.1) MeV, assuming that 5H is unbound with respect to 3H+2n by 1.7 MeV. The binding energy determined from production is higher, in each one of the three events, than that determined from decay, with a difference of (0.98±0.74) MeV here assigned to the 0+ g.s. →1+ excitation. The consequences of this assignment to Λ hypernuclear dynamics are briefly discussed.

Abstract: The FINUDA experiment has recently completed an extensive study of the weak decay of p-shell Λ-hypernuclei including both mesonic and non-mesonic modes. Charged mesonic decay rates have been determined based on the analysis of π − kinetic energy spectra, never measured before. The study of proton spectra from non-mesonic weak decay for p-shell hypernuclei, both single and in coincidence with a neutron, has triggered the investigation of the two-nucleon induced Λ N N → n N N decay channel: its weight has been evaluated to be Γ 2 / Γ N M = 0.21 ± 0.07 stat − 0.02 sys + 0.03 sys . Finally, a direct experimental evidence of the occurrence of the weak reaction Λ n p → n n p in nuclei is presented for the first time. Three events have been found which can be attributed to Li Λ 7 and Be Λ 9 two-nucleon induced non-mesonic weak decay; the kinematical analysis is discussed here.

Abstract: The influence of Si content and sputtering conditions on the microstructure and mechanical properties (hardness and Young's modulus) of Ti–Si–N were investigated using XRD, XPS and nano-indentation. The composite targets consisting of a Ti plate and Si or Si 3 N 4 chips were sputtered in a mixture of argon and nitrogen. Ti–Si–N films were prepared in an r.f. sputtering apparatus of the facing target-type. During the deposition, the substrate was heated from room temperature up to ∼573 K and a bias of d.c. up to −100 V was applied. Without substrate heating and bias, the hardness of the films increased from 30 GPa for a binary system, reaching a maximum of 37 GPa for a ternary system with a small amount (3–8 at.%) of Si. It then decreased to lower values than those of binary systems when Si was more than 10 at.%. The tendency to grow columnar grains was strongest at approximately 5 at.% of Si. The hardness of Ti–Si–N films increased and reached to a maximum value of 42 GPa around at a bias of −10 V, but the crystallite size of the film remained larger than 23 nm. The increase of hardness with small amounts of Si in TiSiN films was probably associated with the lattice distortion. On the other hand, the increment of hardness of films containing 20 at.% of Si by the negative bias application could be attributed to the formation of nano-composite structure.

Abstract: A Cu–Sn alloy layer containing MoS 2 as a solid lubricant was formed on A2014 Al alloy base metal to give a low friction coefficient and high wear resistance by a pulse-current pressure sintering (PCPS) process. This coated layer and the base metal were sintered simultaneously. The hardness of the coated layer increased linearly with increasing density. The friction coefficient was approximately 0.10–0.12, which is comparable to some commercial items. The wear resistance was excellent compared to commercial items and depended on the hardness.

20. δScuti stars in Praesepe

Abstract: We present the results of a large international spectroscopic campaign on the Scuti star BN Cnc. Combining observations from ve observatories taken over more than two weeks, we calculate line indices of the H line. A line index is the integrated line flux in a software lter divided by the continuum flux. We demonstrate that this can be used in combination with simultaneous photometry to classify the oscillation modes. We recover all the frequencies also found from photometry and assign likely mode identications, which dier slightly from previously published values, but are found to be consistent with simple models. The dierence in identication is found to have very little eect on the derived luminosity and temperature.

Abstract: The FINUDA experiment performed a systematic study of the charged mesonic weak decay channel of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Negatively charged pion spectra from mesonic decay were measured with magnetic analysis for the first time for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$, ${^{9}_{\Lambda}Be}$, ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ and ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$. The shape of the $\pi^{-}$ spectra was interpreted through a comparison with pion distorted wave calculations that take into account the structure of both hypernucleus and daughter nucleus. Branching ratios $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}/\Gamma_{tot}$ were derived from the measured spectra and converted to $\pi^{-}$ decay rates $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}$ by means of known or extrapolated total decay widths $\Gamma_{tot}$ of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Based on these measurements, the spin-parity assignment $1/2^+$ for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$ and $5/2^+$ for ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ ground-state are confirmed and a spin-parity $3/2^+$ for ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$ ground-state is assigned for the first time., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We present an experimental study of Λ(1405) via the in‐flight (K−,n) reaction on the deuteron target (J‐PARC E31). We will measure all Σ+π−, Σ−π+ and Σ0π0 final states so that the isospin structure of the produced hyperon resonance state can be decomposed. In this report, we present an overview of the experiment and preparation status.

Abstract: The addition of Si to nitride films such as TiN or WN has been investigated to improve the mechanical properties of films. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of Si addition on the structure and the mechanical properties of ZrN thin films. Thin films were synthesized by an r.f. reactive sputtering method in a facing target-type sputtering (FTS) machine on the substrates of silicon wafer and aluminum foils. The structure of thin films was studied by means of XRD and TEM. The hardness of the thin films was studied in detail by the nano-indentation system and the internal stress was evaluated by measuring the change of curvature induced in the sample. A study of their structure and mechanical properties has revealed as the following: (1) with increasing Si content, the hardness of the films increases initially, attaining a maximum hardness at approximately 3%, and then decreases to lower hardness than that of ZrN binary films; (2) the hardest film containing approximately 3% Si consists of large crystals in the range of 20–25 nm; (3) the increment in hardness of ZrSiN films by silicon addition cannot be explained by the crystal size; (4) the change of hardness with increasing Si content might be attributed to the change of internal stress.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the influence of Si addition on the structure and properties of Zr–N thin films. Zr–Si–N thin films were synthesized on stainless steel, silicon wafer and platinum substrates by RF reactive sputtering in a facing target-type sputtering machine (FTS). The structure of the thin films was studied by XRD and TEM, and the surface morphology was investigated by SEM. The hardness of the thin films was studied in detail using a nano-indentation system. A study of mechanical and oxidation resistance has provided the following conclusions: (i) with increasing Si concentration, the hardness of ZrSiN films increased initially, attaining a maximum hardness of 25 GPa at 5% Si, and then decreased gradually to 10 GPa at 15% Si; (ii) the oxidation resistance improved with increasing Si content, and reached the highest resistance at 10% Si; and (iii) ZrSiN film, by the addition of Si, exhibited a homogeneous fine structure.

Abstract: A search for {sigma} hypernuclear states in p -shell hypernuclei has been performed with the Moby Dick spectrometer and the low energy separated beam (LESB-2) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (BNL AGS). Unlike some previously published reports, no narrow states have been observed for targets of {sup 6}Li and {sup 9}Be in (K{sup -}, {pi}{sup {+-}}) reactions, either for bound state or continuum regions. Together with the previously reported J=0 , T=1/2 bound state in {sup 4}{sub {sigma}} He , these results demonstrate the crucial role of isospin in {sigma} hypernuclei. Abstract: The aims of the present work are twofold: first, to confirm the condition for obtaining gold–yellow TiN films without bias application; second, to examine the quantitative relationship between the colorimetric properties and electrical resistivity of these films. For the first aim, TiN films were prepared by DC reactive sputtering under a no-bias condition in the facing targets sputtering (FTS) apparatus, in which discharge is maintained even at a low gas pressure of less than 0.3 Pa. For the second aim, the color of the films was evaluated by means of the chromaticity coordinates, x and y, and the luminance factor Y, which is an index of the brightness based on a CIE standard colorimetric system. Gold–yellow TiN films having low resistivity were obtained, and a study of their electrical and colorimetric properties has provided the following conclusions. (i) The colorimetry of the films is affected by both the mixing ratio and total gas pressure. In particular, the brightness (the luminance factor) Y varied greatly with a change in total gas pressure. (ii) Even without bias application, a gold-colored TiN film with higher brightness Y has been obtained by deposition at an appropriate mixing ratio of N2/Ar and also under lower total gas pressure (ρ=0.31 μΩ m and Y=49 for the films deposited at 0.15 Pa). (iii) As the total gas pressure was increased, the column size, the surface roughness and oxygen content showed a clear increase. Thus, the films deposited under an atmosphere higher than 0.15 Pa had higher resistivity and lower brightness. (iv) Based on our results, the quantitative relationship between the resistivity and brightness of the TiN films is shown by the relation of ρ=775Y−2.

Abstract: Lambda-hypernuclei are produced and studied, with the FINUDA spectrometer, for the first time at an e+e- collider: DAPHNE, the Frascati phi-factory. The slow negative kaons from phi(1020) decay are stopped in thin (0.2 g/cm^2) nuclear targets, and Lambda-hypernuclei formation is detected by measuring the momentum of the outgoing pi^-. A preliminary analysis on 12Lambda-C shows an energy resolution of 1.29 MeV FWHM on the hypernuclear levels, the best obtained so far with magnetic spectrometers at hadron facilities. Capture rates for the ground state and the excited ones are reported, and compared with previous experiments.

Abstract: High-quality excitation-energy spectra of Λ 7 Li, Λ 9 Be, Λ 13 C and Λ 16 O as well as Λ 12 C have been obtained with 2 MeV (FWHM) resolution and good statistics through the (π + ,K+) reaction. The spectra of Λ 12 C, Λ 16 0 and Λ 13 C are discussed in relation to the ΛN spindependent interaction, and those of Λ 9 Be and Λ 7 Li within the framework of the cluster structure of Λ hypernuclei. It is emphasized that Λ hypernuclear spectroscopy provides us with valuable information on Λ hypernuclear structure and the ΛN interaction.

Abstract: We have observed a clear peak below the {Sigma}{sup +} -production threshold in the {sup 4}He( K{sup {minus}},{pi}{sup {minus}}) reaction at 600 MeV/c and {theta}{sub K{pi}}=4{sup {circ}} . This is confirmation of the existence of the bound state of {sup 4}{sub {Sigma}}He , which was reported in the {sup 4}He(stopped K{sup {minus}},{pi}{sup {minus}}) reaction. As in the case of stopped kaons, no such peak was found in the {sup 4}He(K{sup {minus}} ,{pi}{sup +}) spectrum. Quantitatively reliable parameters for this level have been established. The binding energy and the width of the bound state are 4.4{plus_minus}0.3(stat){plus_minus}1(syst ) MeV and 7.0{plus_minus}0.7(stat){sup +1.2}{sub {minus}0.0}(syst) MeV, respectively. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Hypernuclear mass spectra of ${\mathrm{}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}^{10}$B, ${\mathrm{}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}^{12}$C, ${\mathrm{}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}^{28}$Si, ${\mathrm{}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}^{89}$Y, ${\mathrm{}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}^{139}$La, and ${\mathrm{}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}^{208}$Pb were measured by the (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$,${\mathit{K}}^{+}$) reaction with an energy resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM). The experiment was carried out with a 1.06 GeV/c ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ beam from the KEK 12-GeV PS and with the superconducting kaon spectrometer (SKS). For light hypernuclei, core-excited states were resolved for the first time. Abstract: A superconducting kaon spectrometer has been installed in the north experimental hall of the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. The spectrometer was designed to serve for nuclear physics experiments with meson beams in the 1 GeV/c region, particular emphasis being laid on study of Λ-hypernuclei via (π+, K+) reactions. In order to obtain Λ-hypernuclear data with better statistics and energy resolution, it was designed to have a good momentum resolution of 0.1% FWHM and a large acceptance of 100 msr. It consists of a large superconducting dipole magnet, tracking chambers, and trigger counters that can efficiently select kaons from large background of pions and protons. The overall energy resolution for scattering is realized together with a beam-line spectrometer in the K6 beam line, the momentum resolution of which was also designed to be better than 0.1% FWHM. A good energy resolution of better than 2 MeV FWHM has been confirmed in π−-12C elastic scattering and in the (π+,K+) reaction on 12C.

Abstract: A spectroscopic study of Λ hypernuclei by the ( π + , K + ) reaction has been performed for the wide hypernuclear mass range using a new superconducting kaon spectrometer (INS-SKS) at the KEK 12 GeV PS. A Λ 12 C spectrum with 2 MeV (FWHM) energy resolution was measured and core excited states of Λ 12 C were clearly identified for the first time. It is discussed that the excitation energies and cross sections of these states will be closely related with the choice of ΛN interaction models as well as hypernuclear structure. Hypernuclear spectra of Λ 10 B, Λ 28 Si, Λ 89 Y, Λ 139 La and Λ 208 Pb were also obtained and binding energies of a Λ hyperon were deduced for each Λ orbital. The mass number dependence of the Λ binding energies is, within the present experimental errors, consistent with a calculation based on the Woods-Saxon potential.

Abstract: In April 1994, 4 He ions were accelerated at the KEK proton synchrotron for the first time. Subthreshold antiproton productions with α beams in the incident energy range between 2.0 and 5.0 GeV/nucleon were measured for antiproton momenta between 1.0 and 2.5 GeV/c. The data are compared with the p production cross sections in pA and dA collisions measured previously by our group as well as those in heavy ion collisions.

Abstract: A spectroscopic study of the $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ hypernucleus by the (${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}, {K}^{+}$) reaction has been performed using a new superconducting kaon spectrometer (INS-SKS) at the KEK 12 GeV Proton Synchrotron with an energy resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM). In addition to two prominent peaks which correspond to the $s$ and $p$ orbitals of a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hyperon, for the first time two smaller peaks were clearly observed at excitation energies of 2.6 and 6.9 MeV. These two peaks are interpreted as states where the $^{11}\mathrm{C}$ excited core and a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hyperon in the $s$ orbit are weakly coupled. The excitation energies and the cross sections of these peaks provide information on the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}N$ interaction.

Abstract: Neutral-pion π(0) spectra were measured at midrapidity (|y|0.35) in Au+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=39 and 62.4 GeV and compared with earlier measurements at 200 GeV in a transverse-momentum range of 1p(T)10 GeV/c. The high-p(T) tail is well described by a power law in all cases, and the powers decrease significantly with decreasing center-of-mass energy. The change of powers is very similar to that observed in the corresponding spectra for p+p collisions. The nuclear modification factors (R(AA)) show significant suppression, with a distinct energy, centrality, and p(T) dependence. Above p(T)=7 GeV/c, R(AA) is similar for √(s(NN))=62.4 and 200 GeV at all centralities. Perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations that describe R(AA) well at 200 GeV fail to describe the 39 GeV data, raising the possibility that, for the same p(T) region, the relative importance of initial-state effects and soft processes increases at lower energies. The p(T) range where π(0) spectra in central Au+Au collisions have the same power as in p+p collisions is ≈5 and 7 GeV/c for √(s(NN))=200 and 62.4 GeV, respectively. For the √(s(NN))=39 GeV data, it is not clear whether such a region is reached, and the x(T) dependence of the x(T)-scaling power-law exponent is very different from that observed in the √(s(NN))=62 and 200 GeV data, providing further evidence that initial-state effects and soft processes mask the in-medium suppression of hard-scattered partons to higher p(T) as the collision energy decreases.

Abstract: The Θ(+) pentaquark baryon was searched for via the π(-)p→K(-)X reaction with a missing mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/c(2) (FWHM) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). π(-) meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with a beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/c. No peak structure corresponding to the Θ(+) mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2° to 15° in the laboratory frame is obtained to be 0.26 μb/sr in the mass region of 1.51-1.55 GeV/c(2). The upper limit of the Θ(+) decay width is obtained to be 0.72 and 3.1 MeV for J(Θ)(P)=1/2(+) and J(Θ)(P)=1/2(-), respectively, using the effective Lagrangian approach.

Abstract: Studies of the production of the Δ resonance in hadronic charge exchange reactions show a shift in the Δ peak position. Measurements looking also at the Δ decay products give some evidence for coherent pion production. We have recently completed a new measurement of the 12 C ( p , n ) reaction leading to the Δ resonance, including a higher resolution coincidence measurement of decay π's in the forward direction. We describe the experiment and some aspects of the preliminary analysis.

Abstract: The first measurement of two-nucleon pion absorption in 4 He at 1 GeV/ c has been performed at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchroton. Both the (π + , pp) and (π + , pn) modes were measured and clearly identified, even at this energy. An isospin dependence was obtained which was different from that in the Δ-energy region.

Abstract: Weak nonmesonic decay of Λ hypernuclei is almost unique way to study strangeness changing weak ΛN → NN process. The study of branching ratio gave spin-isospin structure of the the nonmesonic decay. A recent experiment, which observed asymmetry of protons from the polarized Λ hypernuclei, gives the interference term of amplitudes between different parities. It is shown that the asymmetry parameter elucidates the dominant part of the nonmesonic decay mechanism.

Abstract: The first measurement of the invariant cross sections and polarizations of Λ hyperons produced by the reaction π − 6 Li → ΛX at 4 GeV /c in the backward angular region ( 70° lab ) has been done. In the measured region the production with free nucleons was kinematically forbidden. All the experimental results are reproduced by a quark-parton model calculation.

Abstract: A large silica aerogel Cherenkov counter has been constructed as a kaon trigger counter to veto pions of 0.7 GeV/c for experiments studying hypernuclei by the (π+, K+) reaction with the superconducting kaon spectrometer (SKS) at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. It features a large single diffusion box with a sensitive area of 140 cm×120 cm and a thickness of about 40 cm. Special attention was paid to the shape of a reflector in order to achieve uniform efficiency over the sensitive area. A mean photoelectron number of N e = 6−7 was obtained for 0.72 GeV/c (β = 0.984) pions with a refractive index of 1.06.
