Abstract

We demonstrate a significantly simplified experimental approach for investigating liquid metallic hydrogen, which is crucial to understand the internal structure and evolution of giant planets. Plastic samples were shockcompressed and then probed by short pulses of X-rays generated by free electron lasers. By comparison with ab initio simulations, we provide indirect evidence for the creation of elemental hydrogen in shock-compressed plastics at ∼150GPa and ∼5,000K and thus in a regime where hydrogen is predicted to be metallic. Being the most common form of condensed matter in our solar system, and ostensibly the simplest of all elements, hydrogen is the model case for many theoretical studies and we provide a new possibility to benchmark models for conditions with extreme pressures and temperatures. Moreover, this approach will also allow to probe the chemical behavior of metallic hydrogen in mixture with other elements, which, besides its importance for planetary physics, may open up promising pathways for the synthesis of new materials.

Abstract

Abstract High resolution X-ray imaging is crucial for many high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments. Recently developed techniques to improve resolution have, however, come at the cost of a decreased field of view. In this paper, an innovative experimental detector for X-ray imaging in the context of HEDP experiments with high spatial resolution, as well as a large field of view, is presented. The platform is based on coupling an X-ray backligther source with a Lithium Fluoride detector, characterized by its large dynamic range. A spatial resolution of 2 µm over a field of view greater than 2 mm2 is reported. The platform was benchmarked with both an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) and an X-ray source produced by a short pulse laser. First, using a non-coherent short pulse laser-produced backlighter, reduced penumbra blurring, as a result of the large size of the X-ray source, is shown. Secondly, we demonstrate phase contrast imaging with a fully coherent monochromatic XFEL beam. Modeling of the absorption and phase contrast transmission of X-ray radiation passing through various targets is presented.

Abstract

We present new diagnostics for use in optical laser pump - X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) probe experiments to monitor dimensions, intensity profile and focusability of the XFEL beam and to control initial quality and homogeneity of targets to be driven by optical laser pulse. By developing X-ray imaging, based on the use of an LiF crystal detector, we were able to measure the distribution of energy inside a hard X-ray beam with unprecedented high spatial resolution (∼1 μm) and across a field of view larger than some millimetres. This diagnostic can be used in situ, provides a very high dynamic range, has an extremely limited cost, and is relatively easy to be implemented in pump-probe experiments. The proposed methods were successfully applied in pump-probe experiments at the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA) XFEL facility and its potential was demonstrated for current and future High Energy Density Science experiments.

Abstract

Objectives The aim of this AFIRE (Atrial Fibrillation and Ischemic Events With Rivaroxaban in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease) trial subgroup analysis was to examine rivaroxaban monotherapy benefits and their relation to the time between stenting and enrollment among patients after coronary stenting. Background Of 2,215 patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease in the AFIRE trial, rivaroxaban monotherapy was noninferior to rivaroxaban plus antiplatelet therapy (combination therapy) in terms of efficacy and superior for safety endpoints. However, thrombotic risk after antiplatelet therapy cessation remained a concern among 1,444 patients who had undergone coronary stenting >1 year before enrollment. Methods The benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy in coronary stenting subgroups were assessed for efficacy (a composite of stroke, systemic embolism, myocardial infarction, unstable angina requiring revascularization, or death of any cause), safety (major bleeding defined according to International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis criteria), ischemic endpoints, net adverse clinical event, and time between stenting and enrollment. Results Efficacy and safety endpoints for monotherapy were superior to combination therapy, with HRs of 0.70 for efficacy (95% CI: 0.50-0.98; P = 0.036) and 0.55 for safety (95% CI: 0.33-0.92; P = 0.019). For ischemic endpoints, the HR was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.58-1.15; P = 0.240). The HR became smaller with longer time between stenting and enrollment (efficacy, P for interaction = 0.158; safety, P = 0.097). Conclusions In patients with atrial fibrillation after coronary stenting, the benefits of rivaroxaban monotherapy for efficacy and safety endpoints were consistent with those in the whole AFIRE trial population. The benefits became apparent with longer time between stenting and enrollment. Abstract

Monitoring the temperature in liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage tanks on ships is important for the safety of maritime navigation. In addition, accurate temperature measurement is also required for commercial transactions. Temperature and pressure define the density of liquid hydrogen, which is directly linked to trading interests. In this study, we developed and tested a liquid hydrogen temperature monitoring system that uses platinum resistance sensors with a nominal electrical resistance of approximately 1000 Ω at room temperature, PT-1000, for marine applications. The temperature measurements were carried out using a newly developed temperature monitoring system under different pressure conditions. The measured values are compared with a calibrated reference PT-1000 resistance thermometer. We confirm a measurement accuracy of ±50 mK in a pressure range of 0.1 MPa–0.5 MPa.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIM Imaging noradrenergic uptake in the liver with norepinephrine analog 123 I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (mIBG) was explored in normal controls and patients with heart failure (HF). METHODS A total of 961 HF (343 with diabetes mellitus [DM]) and 94 control subjects underwent anterior planar mIBG images including upper abdomen at 15 min (early) and 3 h 50 min (late) post-injection. Decay-corrected liver activity normalized to injected activity and body surface area (counts/pixel [cpp]/MBq/m2 ) was compared in three groups: HF with DM; HF without DM; and controls. Associations with plasma norepinephrine, liver function tests, and level of cardiac innervation were explored. RESULTS In controls, liver mIBG activity decreased over time (early: 2.78 vs late: 2.43 cpp/MBq/m2 , P 520 pg/mL) or ≥ 1 abnormal liver function test had lower early and late liver activity. In subjects with preserved cardiac mIBG uptake, HF subjects had higher and control subjects lower liver activity than comparable subjects with decreased cardiac innervation. CONCLUSIONS In HF subjects, liver mIBG activity increased over time, reversing the normal washout pattern, suggesting a compensatory change in sympathetic nerve function. DM, abnormal liver function tests, and decreased cardiac innervation were associated with decreased liver mIBG uptake in HF.

Abstract

Nowadays, one of the main drawbacks of the GPS accuracy for L1 users is the delay due to ionosphere. The error associated to the ionosphere depends on the Total Electron Content (TEC) in the ionospheric layer, that is influenced by several variables, including the solar cycle, the season, the local time, the geographical location of the receiver and the Earth’s magnetic field. The monitoring of the variation of TEC is important because it is the principal parameter that describes the ionospheric activity. Due to the characteristic dispersive of the ionosphere, the TEC has been computed using GPS data from double frequency receiver. In Europe and in North America, several research centers produce regional and global scale maps of the VTEC (Vertical TEC) using GPS data. In Brazil it can be used the GPS data from RBMC (Brazilian Network for Continuous Monitoring) for studying the behavior of TEC in the Brazilian area. The purpose of this paper is to produce maps of TEC of the ionosphere for Brazilian area using GPS data from double frequency receivers. The methodology and the strategy adopted for obtaining of the proposed results are also presented.

Abstract

OBJETIVO: Comparar o valor preditivo do CRIB (Clinical Risk Index for Babies) para o risco de mortalidade neonatal ao peso de nascimento (PN) e idade gestacional (IG). MÉTODO: Numa coorte prospectiva foram estudados, durante o ano de 1996, 71 recém-nascidos admitidos na unidade de terapia intensiva, com PN < 1.500 g e/ou IG < 31 semanas. RESULTADOS: A taxa de mortalidade foi de 29,6%; para PN < 1.000 g ou IG < 29 semanas foi de 60%, enquanto que para o escore de CRIB > 10 foi de 100%. CONCLUSÕES: O escore de CRIB > 10 correspondeu a maiores especificidade e valor preditivo positivo em relação aos demais parâmetros. A área determinada pela "receiver operating characteristic" relativa ao CRIB também foi superior. O CRIB mostrou-se um marcador mais acurado na previsão de risco de mortalidade quando comparado ao PN ou IG isoladamente.OBJECTIVE: Several indicators, mainly birthweight and gestational age, have been used to predict the mortality risk in neonatal intensive care units. In order to assess the potential value of CRIB in predicting neonatal mortality, the score was used over the first 12 hours of life of the newborns admitted to this unit, during the year of 1996. METHOD: The inclusion criteria consisted of all infants without inevitably lethal congenital malformations, birthweight below 1,500g and/or gestational age less than 31 weeks. Newborn children who died within 12 hours after delivery were excluded. The CRIB score covers birth weight, gestational age, the presence of congenital malformations (not inevitably lethal ) and three indexes of physiological status during first 12 hours after birth - maximum and minimum appropriate fraction of inspired oxygen and maximum (most acidotic) base excess. Abstract

Background Peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2) is a major prognostic parameter in heart failure (HF). Previous studies have shown a relationship between peak VO2 and impaired oxygen uptake and utilization in the peripheral muscles. The purpose of this study was to clarify the determinant of increased peak VO2 by cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in patients with HF. Methods We performed echocardiography during upright ramp bicycle cardiopulmonary exercise test in 30 HF patients (61±1 years of age, 80% male) before and 6 months after CR. HR reserve was determined as the change in HR from rest to peak exercise, expressed as a percentage of the predicted maximal HR reserve. Elastance index (EAI) and LV end-systolic elastance index (ELVI) were derived as the ratio of end-systolic pressure to stroke volume index and end-systolic volume index, respectively. End-systolic pressure was estimated from the equation 0.9 × brachial systolic blood pressure. Ventriculo-arterial coupling (VAC) was calculated as the quotient of EAI and ELVI. The ratio of LDEDVI to E/e' mean was used to evaluate LV diastolic compliance. Systemic vascular resistance index was calculated as mean arterial pressure divided by echocardiography calculated cardiac index and multiplied by 80. The arterial venous oxygen content difference (C (A-V) O2 gradient) was calculated by using the Fick equation as: VO2/echocardiography calculated cardiac output. Results Peak VO2 and C (A-V) O2 gradient were increased by CR. However, heart rate reserve, systolic reserve, VAC, diastolic reserve and vasodilation reserve were unchanged by CR (Table 1). Conclusions Increased oxygen uptake and utilization in the peripheral muscles, rather than cardiac function reserve, may be determinants of increased peak VO2 by CR in HF. Abstract

We performed the measurements of electrical resistivity (ρ) and dc magnetization (M) as a function of temperature (T) under pressure to investigate whether or not the superconductivity is induced by the application of pressure in lightly doped RFeAsO1-xFx (R=Sm and Nd) using pulse current sintered (PCS) high density polycrystalline specimens. We have successfully observed pressure induced superconductivity with T c of ∼6 K (∼8 K) above ∼4 GPa (∼1 GPa) for R=Sm (R=Nd). An anomaly corresponding to a magnetic phase transition into spin density wave (SDW) state was observed in the ρ(T) curves in the entire pressure range, indicating that the superconducting and SDW states coexist in the T-P phase diagram. Volume fraction of the superconductivity is found to be very small. This is consistent with the coexistence of the superconducting and SDW phases.

Abstract

The prototype temperature sensors for an ocean-going liquid hydrogen (LH2) carrier were manufactured by way of trial. All of the sensors adopted Platinum 1000 (PT-1000) resistance thermometer elements. Various configurations of preproduction temperature sensors were tested in AIST’s LH2 test facility. In the experiments, a PT-1000 resistance thermometer, calibrated at the National Metrology Institute of Japan at AIST, was used as the standard thermometer. The temperatures measured by the preproduction sensors were compared with the temperatures measured by the standard thermometer, and the measurement accuracy of the temperature sensors in LH2 was investigated and discussed. It was confirmed that the measurement accuracies of the preproduction temperature sensors were within ±50 mK, which is the required measurement accuracy for a technical demonstration ocean-going LH2 carrier.

Abstract

The prevalence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has been reported to be lower in Japan than in many other countries. However, extensive surveillance for CRE carriage has not been performed in Japan.To investigate the prevalence of CRE carriage in Japan among convalescent patients considered to be at high risk of being CRE carriers using an improved selective culture medium.A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 22 acute care hospitals (ACHs) and 21 long-term care hospitals (LTCHs) in northern Osaka from December 2015 to January 2016. Patients who used incontinence aids, an enteral feeding tube or a urinary catheter were enrolled. Faecal specimens were examined using the newly developed M-ECC for imipenemase (IMP)-producing CRE, which is the most prevalent form of CRE in Japan. The positive isolates were analysed by polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. Risk factors associated with carriage were analysed by logistic regression.Among 1507 patients, 184 (12.2%) carried CRE. The percentage of positive patients was significantly higher in LTCHs (14.9%) than in ACHs (3.6%) (P0.001). Risk factors for CRE carriage were longer hospital stay [odds ratio (OR) 2.59; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.87-3.60], enteral feeding (OR 3.03, 95% CI 2.08-4.42) and antibiotic exposure (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.40-2.87). Among the 233 CRE isolates identified, 223 were IMP producers; the remaining isolates did not produce carbapenemase.This is the first Japanese report to demonstrate the significant spread of CRE in both ACHs and LTCHs using an improved selective medium. A coordinated regional approach may help to prevent further spread.

Abstract

Background A reduction in mortality with the early use of tranexamic acid has been demonstrated in severely injured patients who are bleeding. However, the modest treatment effect with no reduction in blood transfusion has raised concerns. The aim of the present study was to estimate the effectiveness of regular use of tranexamic acid in severely injured patients. Methods This multicentre observational study used retrospectively collected data from consecutive injured patients (Injury Severity Score at least 16) treated in 15 Japanese academic institutions in 2012. A propensity score-matched analysis compared patients who did or did not receive tranexamic acid administration within 3 h of injury. Study outcomes included 28-day all-cause and cause-specific mortality, and need for blood transfusion. Results Of 796 eligible subjects, 281 were treated with tranexamic acid. Propensity score matching selected a total of 500 matched subjects (250 in each group). Tranexamic acid administration was associated with lower 28-day mortality (10·0 versus 18·4 per cent; difference −8·4 (95 per cent c.i. –14·5 to −2·3) per cent) and lower 28-day mortality from primary brain injury (6·0 versus 13·2 per cent; difference −7·2 (−12·3 to −2·1) per cent). However, there was no significant difference between groups in the need for blood transfusion (33·2 versus 34·8 per cent; difference −1·6 (−9·9 to 6·7) per cent). Conclusion Early tranexamic acid use was associated with reduced mortality in severely injured patients, in particular those with a primary brain injury.

Abstract

Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma is a relatively rare and aggressive tumor. Because of its rarity, it is difficult to arrive at a definite diagnosis preoperatively and to design an effective strategy. Here the authors report a case of peritoneal leiomyosarcoma in which diagnosis was difficult because the clinical course resembled that of ovarian cancer. A 77-year-old woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer underwent laparotomy. The excised tumor contained a necrotic polypoid mass that histologically displayed the features of leiomyosarcoma. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy with a combination of gemcitabine and docetaxel but died two months after surgery owing to the aggressive behavior of the tumor. Because the preoperative diagnosis in this case was ovarian cancer, arriving at a treatment strategy assuming peritoneal leiomyosarcoma was difficult. If complete surgical resection of tumor is not performed, as in the present case, the prognosis can be extremely poor.

Abstract

This study was retrospectively carried out to compare the efficacy of echinocandins such as micafungin (MCFG) and caspofungin (CPFG) in the treatment of antibiotic-unresponsive febrile patients with hematologic malignancies. A total of 163 patients received either MCFG or CPFG. We evaluated the efficacy of echinocandin against fever decline in all patients. Fever decline, defined as a body temperature of less than 37.5 °C sustained for more than 48 h without scheduled antipyretic medication. Efficacy assessments showed that the incidence of fever decline was not significantly different between the MCFG and CPFG groups (P=0.599). The median number of days from the start of echinocandin administration to fever decline was 5 in both the MCFG and CPFG groups. Multivariate analysis showed that the use of anti-MRSA drugs (HR, 0.64; 95%CI, 0.45-0.90; P=0.011) and a change from echinocandins to voriconazole or liposomal-amphotericin B (HR, 0.50; 95%CI, 0.30-0.74; P0.001) are significant risk factors for sustained fever. A significant difference (P=0.002) in incidence of fever decline was however associated with differences in the timing of anti-MRSA drug administration. The median number of days from the start of echinocandin administration to fever decline was 5 when administration of the anti-MRSA drug occurred "simultaneously or prior to echinocandin start" and 11 in the "next day or later of echinocandin start" group. In other words, starting anti-MRSA drug treatment after echinocandin treatment is a risk factor. In conclusion, MCFG and CPFG have similar efficacy as empirical antifungal agents in the treatment of antibioticunresponsive febrile patients with hematopoietic malignancies.

Abstract

We implemented an antimicrobial stewardship (AS) program whereby pharmacists sought appropriate use of antimicrobial agents in January 2012. At that time, we targeted anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) agents and carbapenems; however, in January 2014, we added tazobactam/piperacillin (TAZ/PIPC). We evaluated outcomes using multilateral analyses. The average one-day dosage of carbapenems increased; however, the duration of administration and number of recipient patients decreased significantly (P0.01). Moreover, the percentage of patients receiving meropenem (MEPM), for whom the time above minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 40% or higher increased (P0.01). In contrast, patient utilization of TAZ/PIPC increased significantly after targeting of carbapenems as specific antibacterial agents. However, after TAZ/PIPC was targeted as a specific antibacterial agent, the number of TAZ/PIPC administrations decreased significantly (P0.01). The duration of hospitalization and mortality rate in patients receiving specific antibacterial agents significantly decreased after implementation of the AS program (P0.01). In conclusion, pharmacist's interventions to provide AS and patient follow-up reduced improper use and promoted proper administration of antibacterial agents. Furthermore, AS was effective in improving patient prognoses and suppressing drug-resistant strains, as well as promoting effective treatment.

Abstract

Background & Aim Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease mainly caused by wear and tear of the cartilage cushion between joints. Millions of people, especially the aged population, are suffering chronic pain and limited movement due to osteoarthritis around the world. Current treatment of osteoarthritis generally focuses on medication and knee replacement surgery depending on the deterioration level of the knee joint. However, medication has a limited effect on the symptoms and the patients who take the knee replacement surgery may suffer persistent pain around the replaced joint. In view of these limitations, numerous efforts have been made to find a more effective treatment, such as cell therapy to prevent the cartilage from deteriorating and reverse the course of arthritis. Methods, Results & Conclusion Here we show that in twelve clinical cases, the cartilage was observed successfully regenerating and covering the defect region in knees after the intra-articular injection with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and the treatment highly improves the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Basically, the adipose-derived MSCs from the patients are cultured and expanded to a specific amount with the optimized stem cell culture medium, the HELENE MEDIUM. After that, the cultured MSCs are directly injected into the injured knee joints of patients. The cartilage has gradually regenerated and been monitored by MRI photography in six months after treatment. Moreover, these patients showed improvement in clinical outcomes by measurements of the WOMAC Osteoarthritis index and Harris Hip Score. Based on the preclinical and clinical reports, except for replacement as chondrocytes, MSCs are able to secrete paracrine factors which take effects in modulating the microenvironment of the damaged sites, leading to an optimal condition for tissue regeneration. Also, further research will focus on determining co-injection of MSCs with differential factors could facilitate the cartilage regeneration. In summary, our results demonstrate the success in MSCs treatment of osteoarthritis by cartilage regeneration in clinical cases. We expect our findings of MSCs for osteoarthritis treatment could be a starting point in the field of regenerative therapy to more cartilage diseases and unsolved diseases.

Abstract

Neutropenia may develop as an adverse event in patients with multiple myeloma receiving lenalidomide (LEN) plus dexamethasone (DEX) therapy. In the present study, we examined the risk factors associated with grade 3/4 neutropenia during the first cycle of LEN plus DEX therapy. We observed that hemoglobin level (≤ 8.5 g/dl) was a significant risk factor for grade 3/4 neutropenia during the first cycle of therapy (odds ratio: 19.40; 95% confidence interval: 2.68-141.00; p0.01). thus, our findings suggest that determining the hemoglobin level could be useful in the risk management for neutropenia in patients receiving LEN plus DEX therapy.

37. Antibacterial therapy of aspiration pneumonia in patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-positive sputum: identification of risk factors

Abstract

Inappropriate antimicrobial treatment could adversely affect the recovery of patients with aspiration pneumonia. We attempted to identify inappropriate antibacterial treatment and to determine the standard use of anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) drugs in aspiration pneumonia patients with MRSA-positive in sputum. Aspiration pneumonia patients with MRSA-positive sputum treated between January 2013 and May 2013 were included in this study to determine the risk factors for death during hospitalization. The relationship between anti-MRSA medicine use and death during hospitalization was also investigated. More than 10⁷ MRSA colony-forming units in sputum culture, creatinine clearance of less than 30 mL/min, and quinolone use were found to be risk factors for death during hospitalization. The death rate during hospitalization was significantly lower in cases a Geckler classification of 4 or 5 when anti-MRSA treatment was initiated soon after the culture was obtained. Therefore, we concluded that the use of quinolones as antibacterial treatment in aspiration pneumonia patients with MRSA-positive sputum should be avoided and that anti-MRSA treatment should be started in cases with good quality sputum cultures.

Abstract

RATIONALE The 2-aminoaniline scaffold is of significant value to the pharmaceutical industry and is embedded in a number of pharmacophores including 2-aminoanilides and benzimidazoles. A novel application of coordination ion spray mass spectrometry (CIS-MS) for interrogating the silver ion (Ag+) complexes of a homologous series of these compounds using multi-stage tandem mass spectrometry is described. Unlike the ubiquitous alkali metal ion complexes, Ag+ complexes of 2-aminoanilides and benzimidazoles were found to yield [M – H]+ ions in significant abundance via gas-phase elimination of the metal hydride (AgH) resulting in unique product ion cascades. METHODS Sample introduction was by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry analysis performed on a hybrid linear ion trap/orbitrap instrument capable of high-resolution measurements. RESULTS Rigorous structural characterization by multi-stage tandem mass spectrometry using [M + H]+, [M – H]– and [M – H]+ precursor ions derived from ESI and CIS experiments was performed for the homologous series of 2-aminoanilide and benzimidazole compounds. A full tabular comparison of structural information resulting from these product ion cascades was produced. CONCLUSIONS Multi-stage tandem mass spectrometry of [M – H]+ ions resulting from Ag+ complexes of 2-aminoanilides and benzimidazoles in CIS-MS experiments produced unique product ion cascades that exhibited complementary structural information to that obtained from tandem mass spectrometry of [M + H]+ and [M – H]– ions by electrospray ionization (ESI). These observations may be broadly applicable to other compounds that are observed to form Ag+ complexes and eliminate AgH. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract

麦茶加工適性の高い大麦品種の識別を目的に，原料大麦の簡易分析と焙煎後の粉砕L値が30となるように同一条件で焙煎試験を行い，得られた焙煎大麦と原料大麦の分析値の相関を調査した．その結果，千粒重と麦茶抽出液の吸光度に高い負の相関が認められた．また，麦茶抽出液の官能評価を行った結果，タンパク質含量が高いほど，風味及び香りが強いという傾向が認められた．これらの結果から，風味や香りに大きな影響を与える成分と麦茶の色に大きな影響を与える成分が異なると考えた．すなわち，風味や香りにはタンパク質が焙煎により褐色反応を起こすメイラード反応の影響が強く，麦茶抽出液の吸光度には糖質の褐色反応であるカラメル反応が大きく起因していると推測した．

Abstract

Variations of the position and speed of the Kuroshio are studied by a combination of high-resolution high-frequency (HF) ocean radar data and wide-coverage altimetry data. The speed of the Kuroshio and its position are determined along 123.35° E northeast of Taiwan from daily maps of surface geostrophic velocity estimated from HF radar data from August 2001 to February 2005. These two are found to be well correlated for mesoscale variations with periods of a few months, as the Kuroshio tends to be faster (or slower) when its axis moves south (or north). This tendency is significant in summer when the Kuroshio is seasonally intensified and well-defined in the HF radar data. By taking correlation with the sea surface dynamic height anomaly observed by satellite altimeters, these Kuroshio variations in the East China Sea are found to be induced by merging of mesoscale eddies from the east at 21° N and by coincident Kuroshio meanders east of Taiwan.

Abstract

We consider the two-species Lotka–Volterra competition system with a temporally periodic interruption of competition coefficient. We assume that the competition coefficient is constant in a time interval of fixed length τ+, while it is zero in the other time interval of length τ-. The temporal variation of the competition coefficient is rigorously periodic with period τ+ + τ-, in which the competition coefficient becomes a given positive constant and zero by turns, the other parameters being constant in time. We analyze the system analytically and numerically, and derive the condition for the permanence of the whole system, the coexistence of two competing species, and the change of the species-dominance in terms of the competition. We discuss some interesting natures of our system, distinguished from the original two-species Lotka–Volterra competition system with constant competition coefficients. The temporal interruption of competition could cause the change of the destiny of competing species.

Abstract

We consider the number of trophic levels in a food chain given by the equilibrium state for a simple mathematical model with ordinary differential equations which govern the temporal variation of the energy reserve in each trophic level. When a new trophic level invades over the top of the chain, the chain could lengthen by one trophic level. We can derive the condition that such lengthening could occur, and prove that the possibly longest chain is globally stable. In some specific cases, we find that the possibly longest chain is such that the lower trophic level has a greater energy reserve than the higher has, so that the distribution of energy reserves can be regarded to have a pyramid shape, whereas, if any of its trophic levels is removed, the pyramid shape cannot be maintained. Further, we find the condition that arbitrary long chain can be established. In such unbounded case, we prove that any chain could not have the pyramid shape of energy reserve distribution.

Abstract

The FAD-dependent alpha-glycerophosphate oxidase (GlpO) from Enterococcus casseliflavus and Streptococcus sp. was originally studied as a soluble flavoprotein oxidase; surprisingly, the GlpO sequence is 30-43% identical to those of the alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenases (GlpDs) from mitochondrial and bacterial sources. The structure of a deletion mutant of Streptococcus sp. GlpO (GlpODelta, lacking a 50-residue insert that includes a flexible surface region) has been determined using multiwavelength anomalous dispersion data and refined at 2.3 A resolution. Using the GlpODelta structure as a search model, we have also determined the intact GlpO structure, as refined at 2.4 A resolution. The first two domains of the GlpO fold are most closely related to those of the flavoprotein glycine oxidase, where they function in FAD binding and substrate binding, respectively; the GlpO C-terminal domain consists of two helix bundles and is not closely related to any known structure. The flexible surface region in intact GlpO corresponds to a segment of missing electron density that links the substrate-binding domain to a betabetaalpha element of the FAD-binding domain. In accordance with earlier biochemical studies (stabilizations of the covalent FAD-N5-sulfite adduct and p-quinonoid form of 8-mercapto-FAD), Ile430-N, Thr431-N, and Thr431-OG are hydrogen bonded to FAD-O2alpha in GlpODelta, stabilizing the negative charge in these two modified flavins and facilitating transfer of a hydride to FAD-N5 (from Glp) as well. Active-site overlays with the glycine oxidase-N-acetylglycine and d-amino acid oxidase-d-alanine complexes demonstrate that Arg346 of GlpODelta is structurally equivalent to Arg302 and Arg285, respectively; in both cases, these residues interact directly with the amino acid substrate or inhibitor carboxylate. The structural and functional divergence between GlpO and the bacterial and mitochondrial GlpDs is also discussed.

Abstract

We present a new modeling approach to describe the relation between the critical current and the applied bending strain of a multifilamentary Bi2223/Ag/Ag alloy superconducting composite tape. In the model, the shape of the superconducting core, in which the Bi2223 filaments that transport the superconducting current are embedded in Ag, and the damage strain parameter, defined as the difference between the intrinsic tensile fracture strain and the residual strain of the filaments in the sample length direction (= current transport direction), are combined with the exerted strain distribution in the bent sample. The extent of the damage to the core and the corresponding critical current are expressed as a function of bending strain. The present approach describes well the measured critical current–bending strain relation for the three different fabrication-route samples.

Abstract

Hydrogen-assisted reduction reactions at oxidized Ni(1 1 0) surfaces have been studied by metastable-induced electron spectroscopy (MIES). We prepared an O/Ni(1 1 0) surface with the high oxygen-coverage (3 × 1) surface phase, “HC-(3 × 1)”. This surface has been known to show no reactions to molecular hydrogen gas at RT, which differs from other surface phases, low-coverage (3 × 1) and (2 × 1), that undergo prompt reduction reactions at RT. We exposed the HC-(3 × 1) surface to molecular hydrogen while elevating the substrate temperature. In the temperature range from 450 to 550 °C, MIES showed a decrease in the emission intensity of the O2p-induced peak in parallel with a recovery of the Ni3d-induced peak intensity. Evidence of reactions of the HC-(3 × 1) surface to the incident molecular hydrogen was obtained on the MIES spectrum only at temperatures above 500 °C, where a H1s-induced peak appeared at the same energy as the case of initial H adsorption on the clean Ni(1 1 0) surface. This result means that molecular hydrogen takes effect on the HC-(3 × 1) O/Ni(1 1 0) surface but at reduced oxygen-coverages. A surface-structure dependency of the hydrogen-assisted reduction reactions at the O/Ni(1 1 0) surface is discussed.
