1. Drought and temperature stresses impact pollen production and autonomous selfing in a California wildflower, Collinsia heterophylla

Abstract: Abstract Ongoing climatic changes have altered growing conditions for plants by limiting water availability and inducing unprecedented temperature increases, eliciting plant functional responses that compromise floral trait expression, reduce pollen production and promote early self‐pollination. In a controlled greenhouse study, plants of Collinsia heterophylla, an annual mixed‐mated hermaphrodite, were grown under temperature and water stresses. Floral trait responses and related effects on plant reproductive success were recorded. Plants grown under temperature and water stresses were shorter and had fewer leaves at flowering than control plants. Temperature‐stressed plants flowered earlier and had smaller flowers that produced fewer per capita pollen grains than control and water‐stressed plants. While lifetime flower production in plants experiencing temperature stress alone or water stress alone was similar to control plants, those receiving combined temperature and water stresses had significantly lower lifetime flower production. Abiotic stress did not affect investment in female traits such as ovule number per flower, but impacted male traits seen as fewer pollen grains per flower. In plants experiencing abiotic stress, an increase in autonomous self‐pollination was facilitated through a compromise in herkogamy, a sexual interference mechanism that promotes cross‐pollination. Spatial separation between stigma and anther, a measure of herkogamy was zero or negative in stressed plants. Thus, abiotic stress responses in plants did not compromise plant reproductive success as autonomous selfing was augmented. In nature, such responses will likely reduce available nutrition for pollinators through decreased flower and pollen production.

Abstract: Recent advances in modelling capabilities and data processing combined with vastly improved observation tools and networks have resulted in the expansion of available weather and climate information, from historical observations to seasonal climate forecasts, as well as decadal climate predictions and multi-decadal climate change projections. However, it remains a key challenge to ensure this information reaches the intended climate-sensitive sectors (e.g. water, energy, agriculture, health), and is fit-for-purpose to guarantee the usability of climate information for these downstream users. Climate information can be produced on demand via climate resilience information systems which are existing in various forms. To optimise the efficiency and establish better information exchange between these systems, standardisation is necessary. Here, standards and deployment options are described for how scientific methods can be be deployed in climate resilience information systems, respecting the principles of being findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. Besides the general description of OGC-API Standards and OGC-API Processes based on existing building blocks, ongoing developments in AI-enhanced services for climate services are described.

3. Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for predicting development of multiple sclerosis in acute optic neuritis: a population-based prospective cohort study

Abstract: Abstract Background Long-term outcome in multiple sclerosis (MS) depends on early treatment. In patients with acute optic neuritis (ON), an early inflammatory event, we investigated markers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which may predict a diagnosis of MS. Methods Forty patients with acute ON were recruited in a prospective population-based cohort with median 29 months (range 19–41) of follow-up. Paired CSF and serum samples were taken within 14 days (range 2–38), prior to treatment. Prospectively, 16/40 patients were by a uniform algorithm diagnosed with MS (MS-ON) and 24 patients continued to manifest isolated ON (ION) during follow-up. Levels of cytokines and neurofilament light chain (NF-L) were measured at the onset of acute ON and compared to healthy controls (HC). Significance levels were corrected for multiple comparisons (“q”). The predictive value of biomarkers was determined with multivariable prediction models using nomograms. Results CSF TNF-α, IL-10, and CXCL13 levels were increased in MS-ON compared to those in ION patients (q = 0.021, 0.004, and 0.0006, respectively). MS-ON patients had increased CSF pleocytosis, IgG indices, and oligoclonal bands (OCBs) compared to ION (q = 0.0007, q = 0.0058, and q = 0.0021, respectively). 4. Interferon Alfa-2b Adjuvant Therapy of High-Risk Resected Cutaneous Melanoma: The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Trial EST 1684

Abstract: PURPOSE Interferon alfa-2b (IFN alpha-2b) exhibits antitumor activity in metastatic melanoma and on this basis has been evaluated as an adjuvant therapy following surgery for deep primary (T4) or regionally metastatic (N1) melanoma. METHODS A randomized controlled study of IFN alpha-2b (Schering-Plough, Kenilworth, NJ) administered at maximum-tolerated doses of 20 MU/m2/d intravenously (i.v.) for 1 month and 10 MU/m2 three times per week subcutaneously (SC) for 48 weeks versus observation, was conducted by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) in 287 patients. RESULTS A significant prolongation of relapse-free survival (P = .0023, one-sided) and prolongation of overall survival (P = .0237, one-sided) was observed with IFN alpha-2b therapy in this trial, which is now mature with a median follow-up time of 6.9 years. The impact of treatment on relapse rate is most pronounced early during the treatment interval. The overall benefit of treatment in this trial was analyzed stratified by tumor burden and the presence or absence of microscopic nonpalpable and palpable regional lymph node metastasis. The benefit of therapy with IFN alpha-2b was greatest among node-positive strata. Toxicity of IFN alpha-2b required dose modification in the majority of patients, but treatment at > or = 80% of the scheduled dose was feasible in the majority of patients through the IV phase of treatment, and for more than 3 months of SC maintenance therapy. Discontinuation of treatment due to toxicity was infrequent after the fourth month of therapy. CONCLUSION IFN alpha-2b prolongs the relapse-free interval and overall survival of high-risk resected melanoma patients. The increment in median disease-free survival (from 1 to 1.7 years) and overall survival (from 2.8 to 3.8 years) that results from this therapy is associated with a 42% improvement in the fraction of patients who are continuously disease-free after treatment with IFN (from 26% to 37%) in comparison to observation. IFN alpha-2b is the first agent to show a significant benefit in relapse-free and overall survival of high-risk melanoma patients in a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract: Allostery is the phenomenon of coupling between distal binding sites in a protein. Such coupling is at the crux of protein function and regulation in a myriad of scenarios, yet determining the molecular mechanisms of coupling networks in proteins remains a major challenge. Here, we report mechanisms governing pH-dependent myristoyl switching in monomeric hisactophilin, whereby the myristoyl moves between a sequestered state, i.e., buried within the core of the protein, to an accessible state, in which the myristoyl has increased accessibility for membrane binding. Measurements of the pH and temperature dependence of amide chemical shifts reveal protein local structural stability and conformational heterogeneity that accompany switching. An analysis of these measurements using a thermodynamic cycle framework shows that myristoyl-proton coupling at the single-residue level exists in a fine balance and extends throughout the protein. Strikingly, small changes in the stereochemistry or size of core and surface hydrophobic residues by point mutations readily break, restore, or tune myristoyl switch energetics. Synthesizing the experimental results with those of molecular dynamics simulations illuminates atomistic details of coupling throughout the protein, featuring a large network of hydrophobic interactions that work in concert with key electrostatic interactions. The simulations were critical for discerning which of the many ionizable residues in hisactophilin are important for switching and identifying the contributions of nonnative interactions in switching. The strategy of using temperature-dependent NMR presented here offers a powerful, widely applicable way to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of allostery in proteins at high resolution.

Abstract: Infantile beriberi, a potentially fatal disorder caused by thiamine deficiency, is often viewed as a disease confined to history in regions of the world with predominant white rice consumption. Recent case reports have, however, highlighted the persistence of thiamine deficiency as a cause of infant mortality in South and Southeast Asia. Low infant thiamine status and incidence of beriberi is attributable to maternal thiamine deficiency and insufficient breast milk thiamine. Poor dietary diversity, food preparation and cooking practices and traditional post‐partum food restrictions likely play a role in these high‐risk regions. Given the contribution of thiamine deficiency to infant mortality and emerging evidence of long‐lasting neurodevelopmental deficits of severe and even subclinical deficiency in early life, public health strategies to prevent thiamine deficiency are urgently needed. However, efforts are hampered by uncertainties surrounding the identification and assessment of thiamine deficiency, due to the broad non‐specific clinical manifestations, commonly referred to as thiamine deficiency disorders (TDD), that overlap with other conditions resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and missed treatment opportunities, and secondly the lack of readily available and agreed upon biomarker analysis and cut‐off thresholds. This review will discuss the key challenges and limitations in the current understanding of TDD and explore how ongoing initiatives plan to fill persistent knowledge gaps, namely in the development of a standardised case definition to help more accurately diagnose and treat TDD in low‐resource settings. Given more attention and ensuring greater recognition of TDD will support the design and implementation of treatment and prevention programmes, and ensure beriberi can truly be considered ‘the forgotten disease of Asia’.

Abstract: Power flow studies on the 30-MA, 100-ns Z facility at Sandia National Laborat ories (SNL) have shown that plasmas in the facility’s magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs) can result in a loss of current delivered to the load. 1 During the current pulse, thermal energy deposition into the electrodes (ohmic heating, charged particle bombardment, etc.) causes neutral surface contaminants layers (water, hydrogen, hydrocarbons, etc.) to desorb, ionize, and form plasmas in the anode-cathode (AK) gap. 2 Shrinking typical ele ctrode thicknesses (~1 cm) down to that of thin foils (5−200 µm) produces observable amounts of plasma on smaller pulsed power drivers (≤1 MA). 3 We suspect that as the electrode material bulk thickness decreases relative to the skin depth of the current pulse (50−100 µm for a 100−500-ns pulse in aluminum), the thermal energy delivered to the neutral surface contaminant layers increases, and thus more surface contaminants desorb from the current carrying surface.

Abstract: The terahertz frequency range beyond 3 THz has exciting potential to have a transformative impact in a wide range of applications, including chemical and biomedical sensing, spectroscopy, imaging, and short-distance wireless communication. While there have been significant advancements in silicon-based THz imagers in the frequency ranges below 1 THz, technological development beyond 3 THz has been impeded by the lack of solid-state sources in this frequency range. In addition, the design space beyond 3 THz opens up fundamentally new challenges across electronics and the electromagnetic interface. In this spectral range, the wavelength is small enough ( $\lambda _{\mathrm{ ox}}\approx \mathrm {50~~ \mu \text {m} }$ at 3 THz) that a vertical via from the top antenna layer to the detector is a distributed element (transmission line or radiator). In this letter, we follow a careful circuits-electromagnetics co-design approach toward a hybrid imaging system with a 100-pixel CMOS imager that interfaces with a THz quantum cascade laser frequency comb that spans 3.25–3.5 THz with mode spacing of 17 GHz. The array chip, while designed for an optimal operation across 2.7–2.9 THz, demonstrates an average noise equivalent power (NEP) (across pixels) of $\mathrm {1260~~pW/\sqrt {\mathrm{ Hz}}}$ between 3.25–3.5 THz and a projected NEP of $\mathrm {284~~pW/\sqrt {\mathrm{ Hz}}}$ across the design range of 2.7–2.9 THz. To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time full THz imaging in a hybrid quantum cascade laser (QCL)–CMOS fashion. This approach allows future works to leverage both QCL and CMOS technologies to demonstrate new technological advances for systems in the 1–10 THz range.

Abstract: Although direct application of anhydrous ammonia (NH₃) is a common practice for Midwestern corn (Zea mays L.) production in the USA, field studies utilizing ¹⁵N to quantify nitrogen (N) uptake efficiency have long been impeded by the difficulties and safety hazards inherent to a liquified gas that must be handled and applied under pressure. A manifold system is described for transferring known quantities of NH₃ from labeled and unlabeled sources to obtain a desired ¹⁵N enrichment, and for collecting the mixture cryogenically in a tank specifically configured for knifed applications using a tractor-mounted tool bar. Enrichments of 1.2 to 1.5 atom% ¹⁵N were obtained for 3 kg of NH₃ prepared within a normal working day by a 15-fold dilution with 10 atom% ¹⁵N as the starting label. A collection capacity of such magnitude represents a 3000% upscaling over systems previously described for this purpose, providing an essential prerequisite for field plot research to realistically assess the fate and fertilizer value of anhydrous NH₃.

Abstract: Shively T. J. Smith reconsiders what is most distinct, troubling, and potentially thrilling about the often overlooked and dismissed book of 2 Peter. Using the rhetorical strategies of nineteenth-century African American women, including Ida B. Wells, Jarena Lee, Anna Julia Cooper, and others, Smith redefines the use of biblical citations, the language of justice and righteousness, and even the matter of pseudonymity in 2 Peter. She approaches 2 Peter as an instance of Christian cultural rhetoric that forges a particular kind of community identity and behavior. This pioneering study considers how 2 Peter cultivates the kind of human relations and attitudes that speak to the values of moral people seeking justice in the past as well as today.

Abstract: Vitamin D is a unique nutrient that has captured the attention of scientific and medical communities, regulatory authorities and the general public over recent years. Low vitamin D status is a worldwide public health concern and occurs across all age, sex and ethnic groups. Dietary requirements for vitamin D have been re‐evaluated and revised over recent years by several authoritative bodies, including the Institute of Medicine, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the European Food Safety Authority and, of course, the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition. However, a lack of vitamin D dose–response trials in children and adolescents prior to these reports has hindered the development of evidence‐based dietary requirements for vitamin D in these population sub‐groups. Two recent randomised controlled trials have addressed this significant knowledge gap and estimated that intakes of between 6 and ~30 μg/day are needed during the winter time to avoid vitamin D deficiency and ensure adequacy in healthy White 4–8 year‐old children residing in Denmark (55°N) and 14–18 year‐old adolescents residing in the UK (51°N). These new data suggest that, while the current vitamin D recommendations of 10–15 μg/day for children and adolescents will help avoid winter‐time vitamin D deficiency (25–hydroxyvitamin D concentrations

22. Relation of Apple Flower Age to Infection of Hypanthium by Erwinia amylovora

Abstract: Blossom age as related to hypanthial susceptibility to Erwinia amylovora is not well established, but is relevant to disease risk assessment. To test this, detached crab apple blossoms were maintained for various periods and at different temperatures before applying inoculum to hypanthia. Inoculum potential on hypanthia due to wetting was evaluated by subjecting detached stigma-inoculated blossoms (~106 CFU per flower) to varying amounts and durations of simulated rain (or dew) at 14°C. Blossoms of varying age on mature ‘Gala’ apple trees were inoculated on hypanthia with 102, 104, or 106 CFU per flower. In the laboratory, susceptibility decreased with flower age at rates that increased with temperature. Wetness periods up to 12 h resulted in populations on hypanthia of 3 CFU per flower; 24 h of wetness resulted in ~104 or ~105 CFU. A dose response was shown in the orchard, and regression curves indicated steepest decline of susceptibility during initial days after petal expansion. Disease models incorporating a blossom-age component may be effective because they indicate the potential for infection when temperatures favor rapid bacterial growth on stigmas within a window of high hypanthial susceptibility. Further investigation of these relationships could lead to advancements in determining fire blight risk.

Abstract: Computing and software for big science 3(1), 7 (2019). doi:10.1007/s41781-018-0018-8, Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. Abstract: Power-flow studies on the 30-MA, 100-ns Z facility at Sandia National Laboratories have shown that plasmas in the facility's magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs) and double post-hole convolute can result in a loss of current delivered to the load. To study power-flow physics on the 1-MA, 100-ns MAIZE facility at the University of Michigan, planar MITL loads and planar post-hole convolute loads have been developed that extend into the lines of sight for various imaging diagnostics on MAIZE. These loads use 3D-printed dielectric support structures lined with thin foils of either aluminum or stainless steel. The metal foils serve as the current-carrying power-flow surfaces, which generate plasma during the current pulse. The foil thickness (50 µm) and widths (11.5-16 mm) are selected to ensure a sufficient linear current density (0.5-0.7 MA/cm) for plasma formation. Laser backlighting (532 nm) and visible-light self-emission imaging capture the overall plasma evolution in the anode-cathode gaps, including the gap closure velocities (1-4 cm/μs).

Abstract: The use of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) enhances antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) interventions in optimization of antimicrobial therapy. This quasi-experimental cohort study evaluated the combined impact of an ASP/RDT bundle on the appropriateness of empirical antimicrobial therapy (EAT) and time to de-escalation of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents (BSAA) in Gram-negative bloodstream infections (GNBSI). The ASP/RDT bundle consisted of system-wide GNBSI treatment guidelines, prospective stewardship monitoring, and sequential introduction of two RDTs, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and the FilmArray blood culture identification (BCID) panel. The preintervention period was January 2010 through December 2013, and the postintervention period followed from January 2014 through June 2015. The postintervention period was conducted in two phases; phase 1 followed the introduction of MALDI-TOF MS, and phase 2 followed the introduction of the FilmArray BCID panel. The interventions resulted in significantly improved appropriateness of EAT (95% versus 91%; P = 0.02). Significant reductions in median time to de-escalation from combination antimicrobial therapy (2.8 versus 1.5 days), antipseudomonal beta-lactams (4.0 versus 2.5 days), and carbapenems (4.0 versus 2.5 days) were observed in the postintervention compared to the preintervention period ( P < 0.001 for all). The reduction in median time to de-escalation from combination therapy (1.0 versus 2.0 days; P = 0.03) and antipseudomonal beta-lactams (2.2 versus 2.7 days; P = 0.04) was further augmented during phase 2 compared to phase 1 of the postintervention period. Implementation of an antimicrobial stewardship program and RDT intervention bundle in a multihospital health care system is associated with improved appropriateness of EAT for GNBSI and decreased utilization of BSAA through early de-escalation.

Abstract: The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. Abstract: Adolescents from urban, socioeconomically disadvantaged communities of color encounter high rates of adverse childhood experiences. To address the resulting multidimensional problems, we developed an innovative approach, Experiential Participatory and Interactive Knowledge Elicitation (EPIKE), using remote experiential needs elicitation methods to generate design and content requirements for a mobile health (mHealth) psychoeducational intervention.At a community-based organization in a northeastern city, the research team developed EPIKE by incorporating elicitation of input on the graphics and conducting remotely recorded experiential meetings and iterative reviews of the design to produce an mHealth smartphone story application (app) prototype for the participants to critique. The 22 participants were 13- to 17-year-olds, predominantly African American and female, from underresourced communities.The four goals of the design process were attained: 1) story development from participant input; 2) needs-elicitation that reflected the patient-centered care approach; 3) interactive story game creation that accommodates the participants' emotional and cognitive developmental needs; 4) development of a game that adolescents can relate to and that which matches their comfort levels of emotional intensity.The EPIKE approach can be used successfully to identify the needs of adolescents across the digital divide to inform the design and development of mHealth apps.

Abstract: Structural biology aims to obtain high-resolution snapshots of the macromolecules that make up living cells. Most have come from x-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. However, x-ray crystallography is limited by the ability to grow well-ordered three-dimensional (3D) crystals, whereas NMR spectroscopy requires highly concentrated samples with nonoverlapping spectral peaks. Many macromolecular assemblies are too large, scarce, or unstable for analysis by these techniques. Single-particle electron microscopy (EM) offers an alternative, allowing high-resolution structures to be determined from small quantities of noncrystalline material.

Abstract: The energetic networks that govern regulated switching processes in macromolecules are poorly understood at a molecular level. We illustrate a general methodology that uses thermodynamic cycles to measure the coupling energetics between specific groups in a macromolecule and ligand-binding-induced macromolecular switching. The approach is applied to new and published thermodynamic stability and/or binding data not previously analyzed in this way, for a wide range of switching systems, including H+ or Ca²+-binding-induced myristoyl switching, ion or peptide-binding-induced conformational switching in various proteins and small molecule binding to a ribo-switch. The results show how this powerful approach can be used to identify and dissect the molecular determinants of switching in macromolecules.

Abstract: Dislocations are known to influence the electrical and optical properties of long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) HgCdTe detectors and have been shown to limit the performance of arrays fabricated on heteroepitaxial substrates. To help better understand dislocations in HgCdTe, a new method for preparing HgCdTe diagnostic epitaxial single-crystal samples by chemically removing the supporting CdZnTe substrate has been developed. Using this new sample preparation technique, the behavior of misfit and threading dislocations in HgCdTe epitaxial layers has been investigated by using a defect etch to reveal the dislocations present in the thin HgCdTe films. In most cases etch pits on the surface of the film are spatially correlated with etch pits on the bottom of the HgCdTe film. The small displacements of the related etch pits were used to obtain crystallographic information concerning the paths followed by threading dislocations on allowed slip planes in the HgCdTe crystal. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to obtain more specific information regarding the Burgers vector of the dislocation. While this new sample preparation technique is useful for studying dislocations in HgCdTe epitaxial layers, it can also be used to study stress from ohmic contacts and passivation layers. The technique can be used for both liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE)- and molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown HgCdTe on CdZnTe substrates.

Abstract: HgCdTe material intended for long-wavelength infrared detection is particularly susceptible to damage from stress. As a result, an ideal ohmic contact needs to have good adhesion and low specific contact resistance. The contact should act as a diffusion barrier and induce the least amount of stress in the underlying material. In this paper we present a set of stress measurements from different ohmic contact materials deposited on short- and long-wavelength HgCdTe films grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE). Using a new experimental technique we remove the substrate and measure the stress induced on single- and multilayered HgCdTe cantilevers. To interpret our results, we develop a theoretical model that describes the physics of elastic deformation in HgCdTe layers. Our model is based on classical thin-plate bending theory and explicitly takes into account the realistic boundary conditions that are present in the experimental setup by using a variational approach.

37. Flavor and Functional Characteristics of Whey Protein Isolates from Different Whey Sources

Abstract: This study evaluated flavor and functional characteristics of whey protein isolates (WPIs) from Cheddar, Mozzarella, Cottage cheese, and rennet casein whey. WPIs were manufactured in triplicate. Powders were rehydrated and evaluated in duplicate by descriptive sensory analysis. Volatile compounds were extracted by solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Functional properties were evaluated by measurement of foam stability, heat stability, and protein solubility. WPI from Cheddar and Cottage cheese whey had the highest cardboard flavor, whereas sweet aromatic flavor was highest in Mozzarella WPI, and rennet casein WPI had the lowest overall flavor and aroma. Distinct sour taste and brothy/potato flavor were also noted in WPI from Cottage cheese whey. Consistent with sensory results, aldehyde concentrations were also highest in Cheddar and Cottage cheese WPI. Overrun, yield stress, and foam stability were not different (P0.05) among Cheddar, Mozzarella, and rennet casein WPI, but WPI foams from Cottage cheese whey had a lower overrun and air-phase fraction (P0.05). Cottage cheese WPI was more heat stable at pH 7 (P0.05) than other WPI in 4% protein solutions, and was the only WPI to not gel at 10% protein. Cottage cheese WPI was less soluble at pH 4.6 compared to other WPI (P0.05) and also exhibited higher turbidity loss at pH 3 to 7 compared to other WPI (P0.05). This study suggests that WPI produced from nontraditional whey sources could be used in new applications due to distinct functional and flavor characteristics.

Abstract: In this paper we present newly launched services for open data and for long-term preservation and reuse of high-energy-physics data analyses based on the digital library software Invenio. We track the ”data continuum” practices through several progressive data analysis phases up to the final publication. The aim is to capture for subsequent generations all digital assets and associated knowledge inherent in the data analysis process, and to make a subset available rapidly to the public. The ultimate goal of the analysis preservation platform is to capture enough information about the processing steps in order to facilitate reproduction of an analysis even many years after its initial publication, permitting to extend the impact of preserved analyses through future revalidation and recasting services. A related ”open data” service was launched for the benefit of the general public.

Abstract: This paper considers doses from radon and decay products when inhaled or ingested by one year old infants and by ten year old children. Doses from decay products deposited on skin are also discussed. For inhalation and ingestion, the general pattern of doses to organs is broadly similar to that in adults. Much the largest doses are received by the organ of intake (respiratory tract and stomach respectively). Otherwise, tissues with higher fat content tend to receive somewhat higher doses from radon gas than other tissues. Dose coefficients (dose per unit intake factors) for children are generally larger than those for adults. However, total annual doses are more similar across the age groups because of smaller intakes of air and water by children. Radon decay products deposited on skin may be able to induce skin cancer. However, the location of the sensitive cells is not known with certainty and they may lie too deep to receive significant dose. If they are irradiated, it is likely that doses to children would be larger than for adults. The radiological significance of doses to children is discussed.

Abstract: We present a framework for the co-ordinated, autonomic management of multiple clusters in a compute center and their integration into a Grid environment. Site autonomy and the automation of administrative tasks are prime aspects in this framework. The system behavior is continuously monitored in a steering cycle and appropriate actions are taken to resolve any problems. All presented components have been implemented in the course of the EU project DataGrid: The Lemon monitoring components, the FT fault-tolerance mechanism, the quattor system for software installation and configuration, the RMS job and resource management system, and the Gridification scheme that integrates clusters into the Grid.

Abstract: The toxicity of local anaesthetic agents occurs as a result of their pharmacological action on nerve and muscle cells that rely on a high degree of electrophysiological activity for their action. The signs and symptoms of systemic toxicity are caused by the local anaesthetic reversibly inactivating the fast sodium channels of these cell membranes.

Abstract: The International Commission on Radiological Protection has recently issued Publication 88, giving dose coefficients for the embryo, fetus and newborn child from intakes of selected radionuclides of 31 elements by the mother, either before or during pregnancy. The biokinetic models used for calculating these doses were based upon the available human data and the results of animal experiments. This paper summarises the approach used for the development of biokinetic and dosimetric models. It also compares the estimates of dose received by the offspring with those received by the reference adult. The main findings are that, in general, doses to the offspring are similar to or lower than those to the reference adult. For a few radionuclides, however, the dose to the offspring can exceed that to the adult. The reasons for these variations in comparative doses are examined.

Abstract: This paper discusses the doses from radon and from its short-lived decay products to a number of organs and tissues and to the foetus. The aim is to put all these doses into context rather than concentrating only on the largest contributions. There is also a brief discussion of the evidence from epidemiology on the risks of exposure to radon and its decay products. As is well known, under normal circumstances the greatest hazard is to the respiratory tract from inhalation of radon decay products. Radon decay products may also give substantial doses to skin. Under some circumstances it seems likely that ingested radon could give significant doses to the stomach. Other risks appear to be smaller; the results given here allow them to be compared.

Abstract: Committee 2 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has the responsibility for calculating radiation doses from intakes of radionuclides for all age groups in the population. Publication 88 of the ICRP, which has recently been published, describes the development of models used for calculating radiation doses to the embryo and foetus following intakes of radionuclides by the mother. It also gives radiation doses to the offspring for intakes of radionuclides by the mother either before or during pregnancy. The approaches used in the development of the biokinetic and dosimetric models are summarised here together with a comparison of the doses to the offspring with those to the reference adult.

Abstract: Nitrogen (N) fertilization influences apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) yield and quality, but less is known about the effect of rate and timing of fertilization on fruit quality. Rate and time of N fertilization (114 g/tree in Nov.+68 g/tree in May, 227 g/tree in Aug., 45 g/tree for 4 weeks starting in Aug., 136 g/tree in Aug., and 68 g/tree Aug. and May) affected N concentrations in flowers, bourse leaves, and in mid-terminal leaves of current season's growth. Return bloom and yield were highest for trees with the highest rate of N applied in August and they were lowest for trees with the lowest rate of N applied in a split application in May and August. Fruit size, color, firmness, soluble solids, and titratable acids, either at harvest or after 90 days in regular atmosphere storage, were not influenced by all five relatively low rates of N application. Abstract: Windows Terminal Servers provide application gateways for various parts of the CERN accelerator complex, used by hundreds of CERN users every day. The combination of new tools such as Puppet, HAProxy and Microsoft System Center suite enable automation of provisioning workflows to provide a terminal server infrastructure that can scale up and down in an automated manner. The orchestration does not only reduce the time and effort necessary to deploy new instances, but also facilitates operations such as patching, analysis and recreation of compromised nodes as well as catering for workload peaks.
