Abstract: The processes of coherent bremsstrahlung (CB) and coherent pair production (CPP) based on aligned crystal targets have been studied in the energy range 20–170 GeV. The experimental arrangement allowed for measurements of single photon properties of these phenomena including their polarization dependences. This is significant as the theoretical description of CB and CPP is an area of active debate and development. With the approach used in this paper, both the measured cross sections and polarization observables are predicted very well. This indicates a proper understanding of CB and CPP up to energies of 170 GeV. Birefringence in CPP on aligned crystals is applied to determine the polarization parameters in our measurements. New technologies for high-energy photon beam optics including phase plates and polarimeters for linear and circular polarization are demonstrated in this experiment. Coherent bremsstrahlung for the strings-on-strings (SOS) orientation yields a larger enhancement for hard photons than CB for the channeling orientations of the crystal. Our measurements and our calculations indicate low photon polarizations for the high-energy SOS photons.

Abstract: We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range $0.003$1 GeV$^2$. Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two. From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at $Q^2$=10 GeV$^2$. The polarised $u$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta u_v(x)$, is positive and the polarisation increases with $x$. The polarised $d$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta d_v(x)$, is negative and the non-strange sea distribution, $\Delta \bar q(x)$, is consistent with zero over the measured range of $x$. We find for the first moments $\int_0^1 \Delta u_v(x) dx = 0.77 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.08$, $\int_0^1 \Delta d_v(x) dx = -0.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.09$ and $\int_0^1 \Delta \bar q(x) dx= 0.01 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.03$, where we assumed $\Delta \bar u(x) = \Delta \bar d(x)$. We also determine for the first time the second moments of the valence distributions $\int_0^1 x \Delta q_v(x) dx$., Comment: 17 pages

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry $A_1^{\rm p}$ from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range $0.0008 < x < 0.7$ and $0.2 < Q^{2} < 100$ GeV$^{2}$. With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of $2$ compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ is determined for the data with $Q^{2} > 1$ GeV$^{2}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine $g_1^{\rm p}(x)$ at a constant $Q^2$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$ we find, in the measured range, $\int_{0.003}^{0.7} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x = 0.139 \pm 0.006~({\rm stat})\pm 0.008~({\rm syst)} \pm 0.006~({\rm evol})$. The value of the first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x$ of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ at low $x$. We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d}$ we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of $\approx 15\%$ at the one standard deviation level.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm d}$ of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of $g_{1}^{\rm d}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute $g_{1}^{\rm d}(x)$ at a constant $Q^{2}$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$, we obtain a first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm d}{\rm d}x = 0.041 \pm 0.008$, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon $a_{0} = 0.30 \pm 0.08$, and an axial charge of the strange quark $a_{s} = -0.09 \pm 0.03$. Using our earlier determination of $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p}$, we obtain $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.183 \pm 0.035$ at $Q^2 = 10\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.186 \pm 0.002$ at the same $Q^2$.

Abstract: Electron-positron angular correlations were measured for the isovector magnetic dipole 17.6 MeV (J^{π}=1^{+}, T=1) state→ground state (J^{π}=0^{+}, T=0) and the isoscalar magnetic dipole 18.15 MeV (J^{π}=1^{+}, T=0) state→ground state transitions in ^{8}Be. Significant enhancement relative to the internal pair creation was observed at large angles in the angular correlation for the isoscalar transition with a confidence level of5σ. This observation could possibly be due to nuclear reaction interference effects or might indicate that, in an intermediate step, a neutral isoscalar particle with a mass of 16.70±0.35(stat)±0.5(syst) MeV/c^{2} and J^{π}=1^{+} was created.

Abstract: When an ultrarelativistic electron traverses two closely spaced foils, a radiation spectrum 'resonance' appears, arising from the photon formation length extending from one foil, across the gap and into the second foil. Several theoretical approaches yield quite different answers to the spectral location of this 'resonance', and we have therefore in the CERN NA63 collaboration addressed the question experimentally with a 178 GeV electron beam. The experimental technique used - where a variable gap separates two thin gold foils - allows for a direct measurement of a length that is closely related to the distance over which the photon formation takes place. These are the first measurements to observe the gap dependence of the energy of the 'resonance' in the radiation spectrum from a structured target on a truly macroscopic scale up to 0.5 mm. The results are compared with the theory of Baier and Katkov, with both the modified and unmodified theories of Blankenbecler as well as with a naïve, straightforward expectation. Surprisingly, the experiment shows a clear preference for the two latter, comparatively unsophisticated, approaches. © 2014 The Authors.

Abstract: A muon beam polarimeter was built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for beam energies of 100 and 190 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off the polarised electrons of a ferromagnetic target whose magnetisation is periodically reversed. At muon energies of 100 and 190 GeV the measured polarisation is P-mu = -0.80 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) and P-mu = - 0.797 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.), respectively. These results agree with measurements of the beam polarisation using a shape analysis of the decay positron energy spectrum. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We present the results of the spin asymmetries $A_1$ of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic region extending down to $x=6\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2=0.01$ GeV$^2$. The data were taken with a dedicated low $x$ trigger, which required hadron detection in addition to the scattered muon, so as to reduce the background at low $x$. The results complement our previous measurements and the two sets are consistent in the overlap region. No sig\-ni\-fi\-cant spin effects are found in the newly explored region.

Abstract: Arrays of limited streamer tubes of the Iarocci type were deployed in our experiment at CERN as part of a forward muon detector system with provisions for the beam to pass through the center of each panel in the array. A total of 16 4 m x 4 m panels were assembled with inductive readout strips on both sides of each panel. An active feedback system. was deployed to regulate the high voltage to the streamer tubes to insure a constant efficiency for minimum ionizing particles. The arrays were operated in this environment for over five years of data taking. Streamer tube track-reconstruction efficiencies and tube replacement rates are reported. Abstract: The polarized target of the Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN was used for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments during 1993-1996 with a polarized muon beam to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Most of the experiments were carried out with longitudinal target polarization and 190 GeV muons, and some were done with transverse polarization and 100 GeV muons. Protons as well as deuterons were polarized by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in three kinds of solid materials - butanol, ammonia, and deuterated butanol - with maximum degrees of polarization of 94%, 91% and 60%, respectively. Considerable attention was paid to the accuracies of the NMR polarization measurements and their analyses, the accuracies achieved were between 2.0% and 3.2%. The SMC target system with two cells of opposite polarizations, each cell 65 cm long and 5 cm in diameter, constitutes the largest polarized target system ever built and facilitates accurate spin asymmetry measurements. Abstract: We show by experiment that an electron impinging on an electric field that is of critical magnitude in its rest frame, may produce an electron-positron pair. Our measurements address higher-order QED, using the strong electric fields obtainable along particular crystallographic directions in single crystals. For the amorphous material our data are in good agreement with theory, whereas a discrepancy with theory on the magnitude of the trident enhancement is found in the precisely aligned case where the strong electric field acts. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function [Formula Presented] including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The 1996 data taking of the SMC experiment used polarized protons to measure the spin-dependent structure function g(1) of the proton. Three liters of solid granular ammonia were irradiated at the Bonn electron linac in order to create the paramagnetic radicals which are needed for polarizing the protons. Proton polarizations of +/- (90 +/- 2.5)% were routinely reached. An analysis based on a theoretical line shape for spin-1. systems with large quadrupolar broadening was developed which allowed the nitrogen polarization in the ammonia to be determined with a 10% relative error. The measured quadrupolar coupling constant of N-14 agrees well with earlier extrapolated values. The polarization of the nitrogen nuclei was measured as a function of the proton polarization in order to provide a test of the equal spin temperature (EST) hypothesis. It was found to be closely valid under the dynamic nuclear polarization conditions with which the protons are polarized. Large deviations from EST could be induced by cross relaxing the proton and nitrogen spin systems at low fields. Nitrogen polarizations up to 40% were reached by these means. Abstract: An analytic model of the deuteron absorption function has been developed and is compared to experimental NMR signals of deuterated butanol obtained at the SMC experiment in order to determine the deuteron polarization. The absorption function model includes dipolar broadening and a frequency-dependent treatment of the intensity factors. The high-precision TE signal data available are used to adjust the model for Q-meter distortions and dispersion effects. Once the Q-meter adjustment is made, the enhanced polarizations determined by the asymmetry and TE-calibration methods compare well within the accuracy of each method. In analyzing the NMR signals, the quadrupolar coupling constants could be determined for both the CD and the OD bonds of deuterated butanol.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g 1 d of the deuteron in deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarised muons on polarised deuterons, in the kinematic range 0.003 x 2 Q 2 2 . This structure function is found to be negative at small x . The first moment Γ 1 d =∫ 0 1 g 1 d d x evaluated at Q 0 2 = 10 GeV 2 is 0.034 ± 0.009 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.). This value is below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction by three standard deviations. Using our earlier determination of Γ 1 p , we obtain Γ 1 p − Γ 1 n = 0.199 ± 0.038 which agrees with the Bjorken sum rule.

18. Quasifree pi0 and pi- electroproduction on 4He in the Delta-resonance region

Abstract: The reactions 4He(e, e' p3He)pi- and 4He(e, e' p3He)pi0 were studied simultaneously, and for the first time, in a large kinematical domain including the Delta-resonance region. This was achieved by detecting the recoiling 3He and 3H nuclei instead of the emitted pions. The dependences of the cross section on the recoil momentum p(rec), the invariant mass WpiN, and the direction thetapi,q' and phipi,q' of the produced pion, are globally well described by the results of (quasifree) distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations. However, in the Delta-resonance region there are clear discrepancies, which point to medium modifications of the Delta in 4He.

Abstract: Experimental results for the radiative energy loss of 178GeV positrons in Cu, Au, and W targets are presented. It is shown that for a few micron thick target, effects related to the formation zone disappear, in particular, the suppression due to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal and Ternovskii-Shul'ga-Fomin mechanisms. This disappearance may restrict the region of applicability of thin foils as a target for energy-selective production of high energy photons. Furthermore, transition radiation dominated by multiple scattering and structured target interference effects are shown to be likely ingredients for an accurate description of the data obtained at low photon energies. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We analyse the proton, deuteron and neutron spin dependent structure functions at fixed $Q^{2}$ = 5 GeV$^{2}$. The experimental asymmetries for the proton, neutron and deuteron are compared and found to be consistent. The first moment of the neutron structure function is evaluated using all available data. We find that the Bjorken sum rule is confirmed within an experimental uncertainty of 17%. The quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin is small, and the strange quark spin content is different from zero.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin cross section asymmetry for deep-inelastic muon-nucleon interactions with two high transverse momentum hadrons in the final state. Two methods of event classification are used to increase the contribution of the photon-gluon fusion process to above 30%. The most effective one, based on a neural network approach, provides the asymmetries A(p)lN(-->)lhhX=0.030+/-0.057(stat)+/-0.010(syst) and A(d)lN(-->)lhhX=0.070+/-0.076(stat)+/-0.010(syst). From these values we derive an averaged gluon polarization DeltaG/G=-0.20+/-0.28(stat)+/-0.10(syst) at an average fraction of nucleon momentum carried by gluons =0.07.

Abstract: Experimental results for the radiative energy loss of 149, 207, and 287 GeV electrons in a thin Ir target are presented. From the data we conclude that at high energies the radiation length increases in accordance with the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) theory and thus electrons become more penetrating the higher the energy. The increase of the radiation length as a result of the LPM effect has a significant impact on the behavior of high-energy electromagnetic showers.

Abstract: We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Abstract: Two-particle rapidity correlations have been studied for αα, αp, andp p interactions at the CERN ISR using the Split-Field Magnet (SFM) detector. In order to isolate the true two-particle correlations, the analysis was performed at fixed charged multiplicity. In the framework of a simple cluster model, it is found that cluster widths as well as cluster multiplicities are the same for αα, αp, andp p interactions, and both decrease with increasing charged multiplicity.

Abstract: In an experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studying hadron-nucleus interactions, slow particles which are mainly knockout protons were measured with an electronic detector. Their dependence on the target mass, incoming energy, and projectile is shown. We discuss the use of the number of protons as a measure for the number of interactions of the projectile and conclude that the emitted protons measure the impact parameter of the reaction.

Abstract: We have measured the longitudinal ( p L ) and transverse ( p T ) momentum distributions for p, d, t, and 3 He fragments in quasi-elastic alpha-alpha collisions at √ s = 125 GeV, using the upgraded Split-Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The p T distributions reflect elastic scattering among the nuclear constituents as a main mechanism. The p L distributions are only weakly perturbed by this mechanism, and reflect mainly the internal (Fermi) motion of the nuclear constituents; their widths are consistent with expectations from statistical models.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for αα and αp scattering have been measured at √ s =125 and 88 GeV, respectively, in the t range from −0.2 to −0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 using the Split-Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Comparison with theoretical calculations using the Glauber model confirms the importance of including inelastic shadowing effects in very high energy nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering.

Abstract: By time-differential observation of the perturbed angular distribution in an external magnetic field, the g-factor of the 11/2− isomeric state in139Pr has been measured, g = +1.20 ± 0.09. The angular distribution also shows an attenuation with relaxation time, τ R = 19 ± 6 ns. This relaxation is due to paramagnetic interaction of the nucleus with the 4f-electrons. Our determination of the isomeric half-life,T 1/2= 45.5 ±0.9 ns does not agree with previous measurements.

Abstract: We have investigated kinematical correlations between the outgoing beam proton and the proton emerging from the fragmentingα-particle inpα collisions at$\sqrt {s_{p\alpha } } = 88GeV$. Strong correlations are seen, indicating the dominance of quasi-elasticpp scattering in the fragmentation channelp+α→p+pX, for the ¦t¦ range 0.05–1.00 (GeV/c)2. A Monte Carlo simulation of this process can explain the observed correlation spectra assuming an admixture of about 16% spectator protons.

Abstract: Neutron hole states in the 1s shell have been studied in the n(K−, π−)Λ strangeness-exchange reaction on 6Li, 7Li, 9Be, and 12C targets at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The excitation energy and the width of the states as well as the differential cross section have been determined. The clear similarity with the 1s proton hole states observed in (p, 2p) reactions indicates that the presence of the Λ-particle can be taken into account within the weak-coupling model. In this way the (K−, π−) reaction can be used for the study of Λ -states as well as for the investigation of neutron hole states produced at very low momentum transfer.

Abstract: The reactions p p →π − X and p d → pX earch for narrow baryonium states in the mass region between 1.6 and 2.0 GeV/c2. No such state has been observed. In the first reaction the upper limit for the production of narrow baryonium states is 8μb/sr for a 3 standard deviation signal with 4 MeV/c2 width. In the second reaction this limit is 10 μb/sr. The second reaction is rather insensitive for observation of baryonium states as it is dominated by quasi-free contributions.

Abstract: We present evidence for fluctuations of the average transverse momentum in pp, pα and αα collisions at ISR energies. In thermodynamical models, this is interpreted as fluctuations in the temperature of hadronic interactions. We find that the effect does not depend on the energy of the collision, however, the fluctuations are smaller for αp and αα reactions than for pp interactions.

Abstract: Momenta of charged particles produced in inelastic αα, αp, andpp collisions were measured using the Split-Field-Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. Inclusive and semi-in-clusive spectra are presented as a function of rapidityy, Feynman-x, and transverse momentumpT. The inclusivey distributions agree well with predictions of the dual parton model; the highest particle densities are reached aty≃0 and the momenta of leading protons decrease significantly for increasing total multiplicity. ‘Temperatures’ are equal in αα, αp, andpp interactions. ThepT distributions depend weakly on the multiplicity.

Abstract: Cross sections for the production of hypernuclei were measured in the reaction A(K − , π − ) Λ A. on light and heavy nuclear targets, using a separated K − beam at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The pions were detected in the forward direction. The results are compared with cross sections calculated under the assumption that the reaction took place on a single neutron. The good agreement between the measured and the calculated cross sections justifies the use of the (K − , π − ) reaction in order to obtain spectroscopic information on hypernuclei.

Abstract: Using negative kaons of momenta 400 and 450 MeV/c, Σ hypernuclear states have been produced in (K−, π−) and (K−, π+) reactions on 12C. The observed states are interpreted as the recoilless production of Σ particles on carbon. The upper limit for the widths of these states is estimated to be 5 MeV, independent of the charge of the Σ particle.

Abstract: Experimental results for the radiative energy loss of 206 and 234 GeV electrons in 5–10 μm thin Ta targets are presented. An increase in radiation emission probability at low photon energies compared to a 100 μm thick target is observed. This increase is due to the formation length of the GeV photons exceeding the thickness of the thin foils, the so-called Ternovskii–Shul'ga–Fomin (TSF) effect. The formation length of GeV photons from a multi-hundred GeV projectile is through the TSF effect shown directly to be a factor 10 10 longer than their wavelength.

Abstract: In a recent experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) the proton-antiproton excitation functions of the annihilation as well as of the elastic channel have been measured in the laboratory momentum range from 370 to 1000 MeV/c. The experiment was characterized by an r.m.s. mass resolution of 0.4 MeV/c2 and a statistical accuracy of 1.2% for the annihilation channel. With this precision a narrow structure, about 4 MeV/c2 wide, at a mass of 1936 MeV/c2 is observed in the annihilation channel.

The analysis of the spectra shows that in the Λ-nucleus interaction the spin-orbit coupling is at least one order of magnitude smaller than for the nucleon-nucleus interaction.

Abstract: Using negative kaons of 450 MeV/c momentum, Σ hypernuclear states have been produced in the (K−, π+) reaction on 16O. The observed states are interpreted as the recoilless production of Σ− particles in the p 3 2 and p 1 2 orbits of the Σ16C hypernucleus. Their energy splitting gives a constraint to the magnitude of the spin-orbit coupling for the Σ− particles in the nucleus.

The missing-mass spectrum shows structures in the Σ region, which have been interpreted as belonging to hypernuclei with sigma particles. An upper limit of 8 MeV for the width of these states has been estimated.

Abstract: Energy excitation spectra have been obtained for hypernuclei in the s‐d shell from (K−,π−) reaction in flight on 32ΛS and 40ΛCa. The analysis is carried out in a simple particle hole model and leads to the results that the Λ behaves in the nucleus like an independant particle in a harmonic oscillator potential well with no significant spin orbit term.

Abstract: A muon beam polarimeter has been built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for muon energies of 100 to 200 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the energy spectrum of positrons from the decay μ+ → e+ νcνμ. A polarisation of - 0.82 is measured with a relative systematic accuracy of 3%.

Abstract: The 10-probe NMR system for measuring the polarization in the deuterated butanol target of the Spin Muon Collaboration is presented. It is calibrated by determining the integrated spectrum in thermal equilibrium at 1 K. Thermal stabilization and control of electromagnetic interference were effective in reducing drift and electronic noise, so that high quality thermal equilibrium signals were obtained. The calibration constant was determined with a reproducibility of 2%. Systematic effects of circuit drift and of the magnetic field shift have been studied. The resulting 4.4% uncertainty of the calibration dominates the 5% overall error on the target polarization value which was typically 0.45.
