Os isolados de bovinos, que se encontravam no grupo do VR relacionado a morcegos hematófagos, foram posteriormente subdivididos em sete subgrupos genéticos. Estes subgrupos foram distribuídos em regiões de terras planas, com alguns subgrupos separados por formações de pequenas montanhas e hidrografia. Estes resultados indicam que a raiva em bovinos é derivada de diversas variantes regionalmente definidas, o que sugere que sua distribuição geográfica está relacionada as populações de morcegos hematófagos. A total of 53 rabies virus (RV) isolates originating from cattle in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, were genetically characterized. Partial nucleoprotein gene sequences of these isolates were phylogenetically and geographically analyzed. Cattle isolates, which clustered with the vampire bat related RV group, were further subdivided into 7 subgroups. These subgroups were distributed widely in lowland regions, with some subgroups separated from each other by small mountains and hydrographical features. These results indicate that cattle rabies is derived from several regionally-defined variants, which suggests that its geographical distribution is related to that of the vampire bat population. A cryocooled 10 T superconducting magnet with a 360 mm room temperature bore has been developed for a hybrid magnet. The superconducting magnet cooled by four Gifford–McMahon cryocoolers has been designed to generate a magnetic field of 10 T. Since superconducting wires composed of coils were subjected to large hoop stress over 150 MPa and Nb3Sn superconducting wires particularly showed a low mechanical strength due to those brittle property, Nb3Sn wires strengthened by NbTi-filaments were developed for the cryocooled superconducting magnet. We have already reported that the hybrid magnet could generate the resultant magnetic field of 27.5 T by adding 8.5 T from the superconducting magnet and 19 T from a water-cooled Bitter resistive magnet, after the water-cooled resistive magnet was inserted into the 360 mm room temperature bore of the cryocooled superconducting magnet. When the hybrid magnet generated the field of 27.5 T, it achieved the high magnetic-force field (B × ∂Bz/∂z) of 4500 T2/m, which was useful for magneto-science in high fields such as materials levitation research. In this paper, we particularly focus on the cause that the cryocooled superconducting magnet was limited to generate the designed magnetic field of 10 T in the hybrid magnet operation. As a result, it was found that there existed mainly two causes as the limitation of the magnetic field generation. One was a decrease of thermal conductive passes due to exfoliation from the coil bobbin of the cooling flange. The other was large AC loss due to both a thick Nb3Sn layer and its large diameter formed on Nb-barrier component in Nb3Sn wires.

Several different experimental techniques are normally used to evaluate tribological properties of thin hard coatings. However, most of the tests cannot assess properties of coating, substrate and interface independently. In this study, the potential of a Micro-Slurry-jet Erosion (MSE) test to swiftly evaluate the intrinsic wear properties of thin single layered and multilayered coatings is demonstrated. A slurry containing 1.2 μm alumina particles was impacted at high velocity perpendicular to CVD TiC/TiN (TiN on top of TiC) and TiC coatings deposited on cemented carbide. In addition, nano-indentation and XRD, GDOES, AFM analyses were done for the original and worn surfaces. For the TiC/TiN coating, the wear depth of the TiN layer increased linearly until the TiC layer was reached. There after the wear occurred at a lower rate but tended to increase towards the TiC/substrate interlayer. The single layered TiC coating showed the same wear behaviour as the TiC layer of the TiC/TiN coating. The wear rate was constant within the individual TiN and TiC layers, but changed near the interfaces. The micro-topographies of the worn surfaces observed by AFM correlated to the difference in the wear rate of the individual layers and the change in wear rate at the interface to the substrate. The TiC layer proved to have about two times higher wear resistance than the TiN layer. Consequently, the MSE test can distinguish between small differences in the properties of the coatings and of the interlayer zones, and can be used as a screening test when evaluating multilayered as well as single layered coatings.

The Los Angeles classification system is the most widely employed criteria associated with the greatest interobserver agreement among endoscopists. In Japan, the Los Angeles classification system has been modified (modified LA system) to include minimal changes as a distinct grade of reflux esophagitis, rather than as auxiliary findings. This adds a further grading M defined as minimal changes to the mucosa, such as erythema and/or whitish turbidity. The modified LA system has come to be used widely in Japan. However, there have been few reports to date that have evaluated the interobserver agreement in diagnosis when using the modified LA classification system incorporating these minimal changes as an additional grade. A total of 100 endoscopists from university hospitals and community hospitals, as well as private practices in the Osaka-Kobe area participated in the study. A total of 30 video clips of 30-40 seconds duration, mostly showing the esophagocardiac junction, were created and shown to 100 endoscopists using a video projector. The participating endoscopists completed a questionnaire regarding their clinical experience and rated the reflux esophagitis as shown in the video clips using the modified LA classification system. Agreement was assessed employing kappa (kappa) statistics for multiple raters. The kappa-value for all 91 endoscopists was 0.094, with a standard error of 0.002, indicating poor interobserver agreement. The endoscopists showed the best agreement on diagnosing grade A esophagitis (0.167), and the poorest agreement when diagnosing grade M esophagitis (0.033). The kappa-values for the diagnoses of grades N, M, and A esophagitis on identical video pairs were 0.275-0.315, with a standard error of 0.083-0.091, indicating fair intraobserver reproducibility among the endoscopists. The study results consistently indicate poor agreement regarding diagnoses as well as fair reproducibility of these diagnoses by endoscopists using the modified LA classification system, regardless of age, type of practice, past endoscopic experience, or current workload. However, grade M reflux esophagitis may not necessarily be irrelevant, as it may suggest an early form of reflux disease or an entirely new form of reflux esophagitis. Further research is required to elucidate the pathophysiological basis of minimal change esophagitis.

症例は53歳の男性で, 便秘を主訴に来院. 大腸内視鏡検査で直腸に2型の腫瘍を認め生検にて低分化腺癌と診断され, 低位前方切除術 (D2郭清) を施行された. 組織学的に悪性度の高いカルチノイド腫瘍で, INFb, ss, ly2, v0, n1 (+), stage IIIaであった. 2年5カ月後に局所再発のため, 腫瘤切除術を施行された. 再発組織には核分裂像が多数認められ, Ki-67陽性細胞率68%であり, 内分泌細胞癌と診断された. 化学療法 (CDDP+UFT) を施行するも腫瘍は骨盤内にて増大し, 再手術1年5カ月後に, 再々手術が施行されたが, その5カ月後, 局所再発, リンパ節転移, 脳転移にて原癌死した. 内分泌細胞腫瘍は, 腫瘍細胞の異型度により臨床像に違いが見られるが, 脳転移をきたした内分泌細胞癌を経験したので考察を加え報告する.

The world's first cryogen-free hybrid magnet, which was developed at the High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials in order to realize an easy-operational magnet system with no use of liquid helium and nitrogen, has achieved 22.7 T in a 52 mm room temperature bore. After this success, we started to construct a new cryogen-free 30 T-class hybrid magnet, consisting of an outer wide-bore cryogen-free 11 T superconducting magnet and an inner water-cooled 19 T resistive magnet. Up to now, the NbTi outer section coil and the Nb3Sn inner one of a wide-bore cryogen-free superconducting magnet has generated individual central fields of 5.3 T at 350 A and 5.8 T at 303 A, respectively in a 360 mm room temperature bore. The wide-bore cryogen-free superconducting magnet was energized up to 9.5 T as a total background field. In hybrid magnet mode the system was operated up to an 8.5 T background field form the cryogen-free superconducting magnet, because a cooling problem was encountered with the innermost coil bobbin during ramping the Bitter magnet. As a result, the cryogen-free hybrid magnet generated 27.5 T in a 32 mm room temperature bore

One of the critical problems in the study of physiotherapy of Oriental medicine is not being able to use the same reproducible stimulation, especially in Ayurvedic oil treatments. To address this problem, we developed a healing robot which conducts shirodhara (an oil treatment) in a computerized reproducible manner. The physio-psychological changes during taila dhara conducted by the healing robot and an estimated psychological experiences during taila dhara by psychometric studies of anxiety and altered states of consciousness (ASC) were studied. The physiological changes of the practitioners themselves were checked. Sixteen healthy adult females (ages 21-56, 33 /spl plusmn/ 9 years) signed informed consent and participated in this study. During shirodhara the monitoring items for the subjects were: blood pressure and intermittent blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG) R-R intervals, expired gas analysis, impedance cardiography and electroencephalogram (EEG). The single EEG (C3 lead) of the technician was recorded at the same time, and respiratory movement of the chests of both subject and technician were also recorded. In the active studies, shirodhara was performed by a machine with a pumping and heating system. The subject's feelings during shirodhara showed deep restfulness with less anxiety - as if the subjects were between the sleep and awake states. Shirodhara induced bradycardia and the relative suppression of LF/HF power spectrum density, which indicated lowered sympathetic tone. Expired gas analysis showed a decreased tidal volume and CO/sub 2/ excretion. The EEG showed the slowing of the /spl alpha/ wave, an increase in /spl alpha/ and /spl theta/ activity and an increase in right-left coherence. These metabolic, ECG, and EEG findings support the reported experiences of relaxed and low metabolic states during shirodhara. Physiological changes during shirodhara were similar to those of meditation, including /spl alpha/-wave dominance in the frontal area and a decrease in heart rate and CO/sub 2/ excretion. These findings indicated a change in the function of the frontal lobe, limbic system, brain stem, and autonomic nervous system. On the other hand, the EEGs of the technicians of the manual shirodhara showed an increase in their stressful condition, which may also justify the utility of the healing robot as an assistant for the technicians.

A 600-MHz single-chip multiprocessor, which includes two M32R 32-bit CPU cores , a 512-kB shared SRAM and an internal shared pipelined bus, was fabricated using a 0.15-/spl mu/m CMOS process for embedded systems. This multiprocessor is based on symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), and supports modified-exclusive-shared-invalid (MESI) cache coherency protocol. The multiprocessor inherits the advantages of previously reported single-chip multiprocessors, while its multiprocessor architecture is optimized for use as an embedded processor. The internal shared pipelined bus has a low latency and large bandwidth (4.8 GB/s). These features enhance the performance of the multiprocessor. In addition, the multiprocessor employs various low-power techniques. The multiprocessor dissipates 800 mW in a 1.5-V 600-MHz multiprocessor mode. Standby power dissipation is less than 1.5 mW at 1.5 V. Hence, the multiprocessor achieves higher performance and lower power consumption. This paper presents a single-chip multiprocessor architecture optimized for use as an embedded processor and its various low-power techniques.

Thiazolidinediones (TZDs), agonists for PPARs, have been shown to block the inhibitory effects of TNF-alpha on insulin action using cultured cells. In order to clarify the in vivo effects of TZDs on the inhibition of insulin sensitivity by TNF-alpha, insulin action in muscles and adipose tissues was assessed in the TNF-alpha-overexpression mice model using transplantation of cells secreting the TNF-alpha protein. After the pioglitazone treatment for 4 weeks, glucose uptake, insulin-induced IRS-1 phosphorylation, and lipoprotein lipase mRNA levels were analyzed. Pioglitazone did not ameliorate TNF-alpha-induced hyperinsulinemia in this model, as assessed by the OGTT. Glucose uptake and lipoprotein lipase mRNA levels were decreased by TNF-alpha in adipose tissues from the TNF-alpha-overexpressing mice, and pioglitazone blocked these inhibitions by TNF-alpha. On the other hand, in muscles, pioglitazone did not reverse the effects of TNF-alpha on insulin-induced phosphorylation of IRS-1, glucose uptake, and lipoprotein lipase mRNA levels. Present study revealed the different sensitivities of pioglitazone for the recovery of decreased insulin action in a TNF-alpha-overexpressing model using cell transplantation. These results suggest that the effect of TZDs is dependent on the fat distribution and accumulation in humans.

Aims/hypothesis. Visceral adipocytes have different functions than those from the subcutaneous fat area. These differences could contribute to the pathological significance of excessive visceral fat accumulation for accompanying insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia. This study addresses this hypothesis and describes a unique method to clarify whether the functional differences between visceral and subcutaneous adipocytes depend on their anatomical location. Methods. 3T3-L1 cells or TNF-α overexpressing CHO cells were implanted into subcutaneous fat area or mesenteric area as visceral fat area in athymic mice of BALB/C strain. Then, serum insulin, glucose, TNF-α, and several markers of lipid metabolism were measured in the fasting condition. OGTT was also analysed. Results. During the course of glucose loading, the mice which had 3T3-L1 cells implanted into mesenteric area but not into subcutaneous fat area showed remarkably increased serum insulin and TMF-α concentrations, compared to the control mice. Moreover, serum insulin concentrations of the mice, implanted with TNF-α overexpressing cells into subcutaneous fat area, were apparently higher than that of control mice. Conclusion/interpretation. This method of implanting adipose cells into subcutaneous or visceral fat area showed high TNF-α concentration and insulin resistance by the adipose cells in visceral area of nude mice. Furthermore, we found that the functional significance of visceral fat accumulation for TNF-α-induced insulin resistance is partly caused by the interaction of adipocytes with surrounding conditions in mesenteric area. The ac transport losses are investigated at 77 K on the Ag-sheathed (Bi,Pb)/sub 2/Sr/sub 2/Ca/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub x/, multifilamentary twisted tapes with filament number N=19 and twist length of 13 mm, through an ac transport method under self-fields. The losses for the twisted tapes are independent of the frequency, so that the main contribution to the losses are the hysteresis loss in the superconductor filaments. The absolute values of the losses agree with the results of Norris theory for an elliptical superconductor with the same critical current. In addition, the resistive voltages on the twisted tapes have a dependence on the potential-taps configurations, which is found in the monofilamentary tape and multifilamentary untwisted tapes. Furthermore, the wave-forms of axial electric fields are similar to the theoretical results for a superconducting cylinder. These results suggest that the distribution of the transport current in the superconductor filaments is not equalized for the twisted tapes and the twisting of filaments causes no notable influence on the at transport properties when the tapes are examined in self-fields.

The coxa of palaeognaths including extinct aepyornithid species was compared by means of osteology, computed tomography (CT) imaging and macroscopic anatomy. The pre-acetabular area of the ilium was proportionally much larger in width and height in aepyornithid species than in other extant palaeognaths. The post-acetabular area of the ilium, ischium and pubis was relatively short and bilaterally extended in aepyornithid species. Although the Aepyornis species might have produced egg with a major axis exceeding 300 mm in major axis, the short post-acetabular coxa and widely opened ischium and pubis would not have been able to stably hold the eggs in the posterior space of the pelvic cavity unlike the situation in the ostrich. As aepyornithid species resembled the kiwi in measurement ratios of length and width in the pre-acetabular area, a functional-morphological model of the coxa in the aepyornithid species can be proposed based on that of the kiwi. From our data, we suggest that the extinct species of Aepyornis and Mullerornis species effectively used the anterior space of the pelvic cavity to support their extraordinary large egg.

A 79-year-old female who had been observed for an intrapericardial cyst for 3 years was admitted due to severe dyspnea and back pain. During 3 years observation, there were no symptoms and no growth of the cyst. Computed tomography scans showed rapid expansion of the cyst compared with an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) taken 9-days before when she visited our hospital for the 1st time. Urgent complete extirpation of the tumor was successfully done and a histological diagnosis found it was an intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst. This is a 1st report of intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst of which rapid expansion is clearly demonstrated by radiology. It is suggested that complete surgical excision of intrapericardial bronchogenic cysts at the time of diagnosis even if asymptomatic.

Changes in the levels and spatial distribution of abscisic acid (ABA) and 2-trans-abscisic acid (t-ABA) were determined in different sections of spears, buds, rhizomes and roots of dark-grown asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L. cultivar ‘Mary Washington 500 W’). In both buds and rhizomes, ABA level was higher in the younger regions where buds would sprout, while in the growing spears, there was a declining gradient from the morphological apex towards the base. Spear tips were characterized by constant high levels of ABA during their elongation. The growth rate was low in the tip region, and showed a large gradient, declining from the zone of elongation (located 15–35 mm from the tip) to the butt region. Once lateral buds began their growth, the content of ABA in lateral buds plus scale leaves associated with the tip region, was the highest among all tested tissues. The levels of the physiologically less active t-ABA, on a fresh weight basis, showed a gradient, declining from the tip to the butt region in all parts, but was less in absolute amounts. These results support the hypothesis that ABA is involved in mobilizing carbohydrate reserves for spear growth.

By the reaction of 2-benzoylmethylimidazoles (1a, b) with polarized olefins (2, 3) in the presence of K2CO3, the corresponding imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives (4, 5) were obtained. Methylsulfinylimidazopyridine derivative (7) obtained by the reaction of 5b with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA), easily underwent nucleophilic substitution to give the corresponding substituted compounds (8a--e). The substitution of chloroimidazopyridine derivative (11) with nucleophiles produced the corresponding substituted compounds (12a--d).

We report a case of ventricular septal defect (VSD) associated with infective endocarditis complication of aortic and pulmonary valvular regurgitation. He received treatment for pyelonephritis and after 2 months he was suffering from congestive heart failure. Echocardiography showed vegetation on the aortic valve and the anterior semilunar cusp of the pulmonary valve. He was referred to our department for surgical repair. Aortic valvular replacement, pulmonary valvular repair and direct closure of VSD were performed. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient discharged at 28 postoperative day.

Noonan syndrome is one of the most common nonchromosomal syndromes seen in children with congenital heart disease. The major cause of death is congestive heart failure. We report a case of Noonan syndrome with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and arterial septal defect (ASD). Since 10 years old he had been suffering from congestive heart failure. ASD patch closure with a fenestrated flap valve patch was performed at 12 years of age. After operation, left-to-right shunt flow through the patch gradually decreased and he was discharged at 19 postoperative day in good condition.

Published data has suggested that low body weight is risk factor for surgical intervention in congenital heart disease. We report a case of a low birth weight infant with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH). A female infant was born at 31 weeks' gestation. The birth weight was 904 g. At birth she was suffering from congestive heart failure. We diagnosed VSD and PH. We performed pulmonary artery banding at 23 days of age. She accepted the band at a circumference of 15.5 mm. And we performed VSD patch closure and de-banding at 175 days of age. After operation she was on good course and discharged at 19 postoperative day.

Ubiquitous computing is very expected to improve safety and offer more services in Japan. This involves managing large amounts of personal data, which is currently done by private companies. The paper describes how to use these data to watch children to keep safety on road to go to school. We use an agent-based recognition of relations among people using GPS data to show context information to parent who watch over his child. The recognition functions consisted of autonomous intelligent agents. An agent in lower layer of hierarchy finds the child drop off the way from school to home, then it makes alarm in system. The current application system such as a support system for watching over child on the school community road will send alarm-mail to the parent. Frequently, the child only go to a park with his friends to play, it is safe case, but the ordinary system makes an alarm-mail therefore the parent doesn't watch the alarm-mail at last. The system which is proposed in this paper tries to reduce unneeded alarm-mail to use recognition of relation among people.

The low-temperature electronic structure of the quarter-filled, quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) system (DI-DCNQI)2Ag is revealed using synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction. In spite of the interchain frustration in the twofold superstructure along the 1D chain, the body-centered tetragonal "charge ordering" structure, which consists of 4k_{F} charge ordering columns and 4k_{F} bond order wave columns, is realized. This is the first example of the Q1D system having plural kinds of columns as its ground state. This charge ordered structure is regarded as a Wigner crystal caused by intercolumn Coulomb repulsion.

The amputee cannot operate a mouse freely when they use personal computer. Also there are few people who think it easy to use computers among the old. Then, we develop the new type man machine interface using an electromyogram (EMG). The advantage of EMG is the following two. The first is that, we can control EMG freely. The second is that, what is necessary is just to put electrodes on the skin surface. In this study, the operation of a mouse cursor is reproduced (up, down, left, right, right click, left click). We used EMG for the input and the output of the system is mouse cursor operation. Operation of a mouse cursor was judged by the neural network. The neural network was taken as three inputs, two hidden layers, and the one output layer. We were able to do cursor operation 70% reappearance as a result.

We used EMG for the input and the output of the system for mouse cursor operation. Six EMG signals are converted to the mouse cursor movement by the electric circuit or computer software. The usability of this system is conformed by Fitts's law.

In this paper, using the block samples with needle-plane electrode system, the influence of additives such as cross-linking byproducts, dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and antioxidants (AO) on the electroluminescence (EL) inception voltage and emission intensity in LDPE-based materials was investigated and analysed. It was found that (1) cross-linking byproducts increase the EL intensity, but can not change the EL inception voltage; (2) DCP decreases the EL inception voltage, but increases the EL intensity; (3) the EL inception voltage of AO-added LDPE samples is higher than that of AO-free ones, whereas their EL intensity is much smaller than that of the AO-free ones.

In an effort to continuously improving business productivity, companies are adopting new practices towards a continuous optimization of the total enterprise in the areas of business processes, supply chain and plant life cycle. This trend is supported with the enabling technology for integrated enterprise systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply chain management (SCM) systems. With an ERP system, various types of information can be accessed in one system which allows us to do work flow reengineering more effectively. The accessibility of information from the lower layer (process automation/control) system such as process data to the upper layer (enterprise) system such as business data is critical for establishing an effective SCM system. This system plays a critical role for linking the enterprise and the control systems in optimizing the enterprise performance. In a chemical industry, the range of feasible operation regions that is set for the SCM system to find the best operation policy will indirectly depend on the ability of the process control system to perform in the range of operation regions. One of the requirements for an efficient production network is the ability to adopt changes in production operations with greater flexibility. This requirement will put a challenge on the process control technology. Meeting this requirement will allow for greater feasible operation regions set in the SCM study. Here, we discuss the potential impacts of a new trend in enterprise wide SCM practices on process control system in a chemical plant operation.

This paper reports the current situation and future directions of control theory and control technology which have been practically applied to Japanese industries. The control technology committee of the Japanese Society of Instrument and Control Engineering (SICE) have carried out the investigation on the activities and control technology of Japanese industry. The committee sent 300 questionnaire letters to Japanese manufacturing companies and got 110 effective answers which include 150 application examples in the practical industries. After the inquiry, the committee visited the potential companies' plants and interviewed the process and control engineers to confirm and get their views and comments on the subject studied.

In this paper, using block samples with a needle-plane electrode system, the influence of additives such as cross-linking by-products, DCP and AO on the electroluminescence inception voltage and emission intensity in LDPE-based materials is investigated and analysed.

A quasi-one-dimensional pi-electron charge-ordered insulator, (DI-DCNQI)2Ag, is metallized by Cu doping into the Ag sites. It is found that with doping the charge gap is diminished and then disorder-induced insulating nature comes up, eventually followed by transition or crossover to a pi-d networked metal. The profile of the charge-gap collapse is consistent with the prediction of the theory highlighting the interplay between electron correlation and disorder. The present doping method is regarded as doping of d orbital, which is different from the conventional charge and/or spin doping developed in cuprates and manganites.

Background We reported that the presence of anti-Ro/SS-A antibody (anti-Ro) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients might be related to the inefficacy and the discontinuation of infliximab (IFX) compared to the other TNF inhibitors (etanercept and adalimumab). In addition, anti-Ro-positive patients who did not respond to IFX or adalimumab improved clinically when they switched to etanercept or tocilizmab (TCZ) as the second biologics. Objectives To study the difference in clinical response between anti-Ro-positive and -negative RA patients treated with golimumab (GLM) that is one of the TNF inhibitors and TCZ that is IL-6 inhibitor. Methods Thirty-six patients with GLM treatment (naive: 15, switch: 21) and 38 patients with TCZ treatment (naive: 7, switch: 31) were studied the efficacy and the continuation rate. The baseline characteristics were compared between responders and non-responders. Clinical response according to the disease activity score in 28 joints (DAS28) EULAR response criteria at 24 and 48 weeks was compared between anti-Ro-positive and -negative patients with RA. Results The EULAR response of a moderate or good response at 24 weeks based on DAS28 score in GLM and TCZ treatment was 29/36 (80.6%) and 35/38 (85.7%), respectively. There was revealed similar pattern at 48 weeks both GLM and TCZ treatment (82.1% and 94.7%, respectively). The following variables at baseline that were sex, age, disease duration, methotrexate dose, steroid dose, CRP levels, ESR levels, and DAS28 were not different between responders and non-responders in both GLM and TCZ treatment. When the clinical efficacy was compared between naive and switch patients, the number of responders to TCZ treatment was not different between naive and switch (85.7% to 93.5%, respectively), while the response to GLM in naive was significantly higher than that in switch (100% to 65%; respectively, p=0.013). Anti-Ro was detected in 7 of 36 (19.4%) patients with GLM treatment, and detected in 10 of 38 (26.3%) patients with TCZ treatment. When we focused on the presence of anti-Ro, the EULAR response of a moderate or good response was not different between anti-Ro-positive and -negative patients treated with both GLM and TCZ at 24 and 48 weeks (24 weeks: GLM; 85. 7% vs. 70.4%; respectively, p=1.000, TCZ; 100% vs. 89.3%, respectively, p=0.552, 48 weeks: GLM; 71.4% vs. 70.4%; respectively, p=1.000, TCZ; 100% vs. 92.9%; respectively, p=1.000). The continuation rate to GLM and TCZ in anti-Ro-positive patients were 74.4% and 90.0%, respectively. Conclusions There was no difference efficacy between anti-Ro-positive and -negative RA patients with both treatments. The efficacy and the continuation rate of TCZ were better than that of GLM, in RA patients with both switched bio and anti-Ro. On the other hand, GLM was effective in RA patients with anti-Ro and it was suggested that the results might be related to the different immunogenicity between GLM and IFX. We report a case of upper urinary tract carcinoma which recurred 11 years after total cystectomy. A 52-year-old man presented with complaints of a sense of residual urine and terminal miction pain. Urinary cytology, cystoscopic examination and intravenous pyelography revealed normal findings. Twenty months later, because class V urinary cytologic findings were detected, transurethral biopsy was performed. Carcinoma in situ was diagnosed pathologically. Therefore, total cystectomy and ileal conduit urinary diversion were performed. The pathological diagnosis was transitional cell carcinoma, grade 3, pTis. At 127 months postoperatively, laboratory examination revealed an extremely high serum level of LDH (3,084 U/l). The right kidney was not visualized on IVP and computed tomography revealed a right renal irregular mass. On the suspicion of a renal pelvic tumor, right total nephroureterectomy was done. The pathologic diagnosis was renal pelvic adenocarcinoma and ureteral transitional cell carcinoma. The patient was treated postoperatively with 3 cycles of systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The serum level of LDH returned to normal. However, one year later, the serum level of LDH elevated to 1,118 U/l. He died of retroperitoneal lymph node, left adrenal gland and pulmonary metastases.

We started a new home infusion therapy system in July 1999. The home infusion therapy system is made up of doctors, nursing stations, and pharmacies in the community. We coordinate these parties before patient discharge from our hospital and support them when the patient needs hospitalization (for example, he or she develops pneumonia). This report discusses past experiences and future issue.

We treated an infant with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome ("Ondine's curse"). She was cyanotic and given ventilatory support at the first hour after birth. An investigation of sleep state and respiration performed at the age of 3 months led to this diagnosis. Hypoventilation persisted in all sleep stages, with the most severely reduced tidal volumes occurring during delta-wave sleep (stages 3 and 4). In addition, severe secondary reduction in tidal volumes occurred in sleep-onset REM sleep. This phenomenon was absent in non sleep-onset REM sleep. At 4 months of age, her respiratory treatment was successfully converted to positive-pressure ventilation via a nasal mask, thus avoiding tracheotomy. This transition to noninvasive ventilatory support dramatically improved her quality of life during wakefulness. This report may be a clue to discuss the function of sleep-onset REM sleep seen in the early stage of life and suggests that nasal mask ventilation is a viable option in selected cases with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS).

The bottle-nosed dolphin NADPH oxidase cytosolic components, p40(phox), p47(phox) and p67(phox) cDNA's were cloned from mitogen stimulated peripheral white blood cell mRNA utilizing the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The sequences of these cDNAs showed that dolphin p40(phox), p47(phox) and p67(phox) clones contained open reading frames encoding predicted polypeptides of 339, 391 and 526 amino acids, respectively. Analysis of the p47(phox) and p67(phox) amino acid sequences showed two potential Src homology three domains and p40(phox) one. Comparison of the deduced amino acids showed that dolphin p40(phox) sequence shared 88.8% similarity with the human p40(phox), that dolphin p47(phox) sequence shared 87.7% similarity with the bovine p47(phox), and that dolphin p67(phox) shared 88.1% similarity with the bovine p67(phox). Western blot analysis using anti-human p40(phox), p47(phox) and p67(phox) antibodies demonstrated that dolphin neutrophil possesses p40(phox), p47(phox) and p67(phox) with similar molecular masses and structures, to each counterpart in human neutrophils, except for the p67(phox) COOH-terminus. These results suggest that dolphin NADPH oxidase cytosolic components have functional activities equivalent to those of human.

A single phase of rare earth doped C70 compounds, Sm3C70, has been first isolated. The Rietveld analysis of the synchrotron x-ray diffraction pattern of the nominal Sm3C70 revealed that there exist extremely short Sm-C bonds. The short bonds are arranged so as to form a C70-Sm-C70 dimer structure. The experiments of the high temperature x-ray diffraction show that this structure is maintained up to 850K, indicating that the bonds are extremely stable comparing to the conventional interfullerene bonds.

The switching time and the arc-firing probability of a self-sustaining discharge in UV-laser triggered vacuum gap (ULTVG) were measured. The third harmonic beam of a Nd:YAG pulse laser (wavelength 355 nm, energy 5 mJ/pulse, power density 4/spl times/10/sup 7/ W/cm/sup 2/) was used as a trigger for ULTVG. The UV-laser pulse injected perpendicularly onto the grounded cathode. The electrode materials were oxygen-free copper and aluminum. The electrodes were 85 mm in diameter. The gap length was 1.6, 1.9, 2.2 mm. The experimental chamber was evacuated to about 1.3/spl times/10/sup -4/ Pa by a turbo molecular pump. The range of the firing voltage in copper electrodes was higher than in aluminum. The jitter of the switching time in copper electrodes was smaller than in aluminum. The arc-firing probability decreased as the circuit inductance increased.

N822 mutation of KIT gene was frequent in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia patients with t(8;21) in Japan: a study of the Japanese childhood AML cooperative study group

Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based vector is a promising gene transfer vehicle by virtue of the characteristics of wild-type AAV:tropism to a wide range of human tissues and locus-specific integration at chromosome 19q13.3. To elucidate the nature of the recombinant AAV (rAAV), transduction of neomycin phosphotransferase enzyme gene (NeoR gene) into seven human leukemia cell lines was performed. Transduction efficiencies were assessed by colony formation assay and limiting dilution assay. The results suggested that both assays are comparable. Transduction efficiencies of the NeoR gene into K-562, MEG-O1, Raji, MOLT-3, HL-60, U937 and NKM-1 at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 0.1 were 0.27, 0.25, 0.015, 0.009,0.0025 and0.0025%, respectively. After purification and concentration of rAAV, 27% efficiency was observed in K562 at an MOI of 7 and a linear relationship between MOI and efficiency was confirmed, suggesting that this system may be useful for gene transduction into leukemia cells. Integration of the NeoR gene into the host genome was detected by Southern blotting analysis, which showed various sizes of digested fragments. A fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) study was carried out on 11 clones, in all of which the NeoR gene was integrated out of chromosome 19q13.3. In five of the clones, whole chromosome painting probes revealed that the integration sites were chromosomes 1q, 2q, 2q, 11p, 12p and 13q.
