Abstract

Open check dams are strategic structures to control sediment and large-wood transport during extreme flood events in steep streams and piedmont rivers. Large wood (LW) tends to accumulate at such structures, obstruct their openings and increase energy head losses, thus increasing flow levels. The extent and variability to which the stage–discharge relationship of a check dam is modified by LW presence has so far not been clear. In addition, sufficiently high flows may trigger a sudden release of the trapped LW with eventual dramatic consequences downstream. This paper provides experimental quantification of LW-related energy head loss and simple ways to compute the related increase in water depth at dams of various shapes: trapezoidal, slit, slot and sabo (i.e. made of piles), with consideration of the flow capacity through their open bodies and atop their spillways. In addition, it was observed that LW is often released over the structure when the overflowing depth, i.e. total depth minus spillway elevation, is about 3–5 times the mean log diameter. Two regimes of LW accumulations were observed. Dams with low permeability generate low velocity upstream, and LW then accumulates as floating carpets, i.e. as a single floating layer. Conversely, dams with high permeability maintain high velocities immediately upstream of the dams and LW tends to accumulate in dense complex 3D patterns. This is because the drag forces are stronger than the buoyancy, allowing the logs to be sucked below the flow surface. In such cases, LW releases occur for higher overflowing depth and the LW-related head losses are higher. A new dimensionless number, namely the buoyancy-to-drag-force ratio, can be used to compute whether (or not) flows stay in the floating-carpet domain where buoyancy prevails over drag force.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE. This study evaluated the effects of ebastine on serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels in patients with bronchial asthma. PATIENTS. Twenty patients with bronchial asthma and low efficiency of current therapy (11 patients with atopic disease and 9 with non-atopic disease) were enrolled in the study. METHODS. In an open-label design, all patients received ebastine 10 mg/day for 4 weeks and serum ECP levels, peripheral blood eosinophil counts, morning peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and thresholds for airway hyper-responsiveness (Dmin in asthgraphy) were determined before and after treatment. RESULTS. Serum ECP levels and peripheral blood eosinophil counts were significantly decreased. Abstract

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters η ‾ and ξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the τ lepton using 703 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e + e − → τ + τ − → ( π + π 0 ν ‾ ) ( l − ν ν ‾ γ ) ( l = e or μ ) . The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are η ‾ = − 2.0 ± 1.5 ± 0.8 and ξ κ = 0.6 ± 0.4 ± 0.2 , where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

We search for CP violation in the charged charm meson decay D+ -> pi(+)pi(0), based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 921 fb(-1) collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e(+)e(-) asymmetric-energy collider. The measured CP-violating asymmetry is [+2.31 +/- 1.24(stat) +/- 0.23(syst)] %, which is consistent with the standard model prediction and has a significantly improved precision compared to previous results.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider in Japan will operate at an unprecedented luminosity of \(8\,\times \,10^{35}\) cm\(^{-2}\)s\(^{-1}\), about 40 times larger than its predecessor, Belle. Its vertex detector is composed of a two-layer DEPFET pixel detector (PXD) and a four layer double-sided silicon microstrip detector (SVD). To achieve a precise decay-vertex position determination and excellent low-momentum tracking under a harsh background condition and high trigger rate of 10 kHz, the SVD employs several innovative techniques. In order to minimize the parasitic capacitance in the signal path, 1748 APV25 ASIC chips, which read out signal from 224 k strip channels, are directly mounted on the modules with the novel Origami concept. The analog signal from APV25 are digitized by a flash ADC system, and sent to the central DAQ as well as to online tracking system based on SVD hits to provide region of interests to the PXD for reducing the latter’s data size to achieve the required bandwidth and data storage space. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art dual phase \(\hbox {CO}_2\) cooling solution has been chosen for a combined thermal management of the PXD and SVD system. In this proceedings, we present key design principles, module construction and integration status of the Belle II SVD.

Abstract

We report the first evidence for isospin violation in B→K^{*}γ and the first measurement of the difference of CP asymmetries between B^{+}→K^{*+}γ and B^{0}→K^{*0}γ. This analysis is based on the data sample containing 772×10^{6}BB[over ¯] pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e^{+}e^{-} collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1σ, Δ_{0+}=[+6.2±1.5(stat)±0.6(syst)±1.2(f_{+-}/f_{00})]%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of B^{+}B^{-} to B^{0}B[over ¯]^{0} production in ϒ(4S) decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the standard model. The result for the difference of CP asymmetries is ΔA_{CP}=[+2.4±2.8(stat)±0.5(syst)]%, consistent with zero. The measured branching fractions and CP asymmetries for charged and neutral B meson decays are the most precise to date. We also calculate the ratio of branching fractions of B^{0}→K^{*0}γ to B_{s}^{0}→ϕγ.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the asymmetric SuperKEKB collider in Japan will operate at an instantaneous luminosity approximately 50 times greater than its predecessor (Belle). The central feature of the experiment is a vertex detector comprising two layers of pixelated silicon detectors (PXD) and four layers of double-sided silicon microstrip detectors (SVD). One of the key measurements for Belle II is CP violation asymmetry in the decays of beauty and charm hadrons, which hinges on a precise charged-track vertex determination and low-momentum track measurement. Towards this goal, a proper assembly of the SVD components with precise alignment ought to be performed and the geometrical tolerances should be checked to fall within the design limits. We present an overview of the assembly procedure that is being followed, which includes the precision gluing of the SVD module components, wire-bonding of the various electrical components, and precision 3D coordinate measurements of the final SVD modules. Finally, some results from the latest test-beam are reported.

Abstract

The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) is one of the main detectors in the Belle II experiment at KEK, Japan. In combination with a pixel detector, the SVD determines precise decay vertex and low-momentum track reconstruction. The SVD ladders are being developed at several institutes. For the development of the tracking algorithm as well as the performance estimation of the ladders, beam tests for the ladders were performed. We report an overview of the SVD development, its performance measured in the beam test, and the prospect of its assembly and commissioning until installation.

Abstract

The Belle II Experiment at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Tsukuba, Japan, will explore the asymmetry between matter and antimatter and search for new physics beyond the standard model. 172 double-sided silicon strip detectors are arranged cylindrically in four layers around the collision point to be part of a system which measures the tracks of the collision products of electrons and positrons. A total of 1748 radiation-hard APV25 chips read out 128 silicon strips each and send the analog signals by time-division multiplexing out of the radiation zone to 48 Flash Analog Digital Converter Modules (FADC). Each of them applies processing to the data; for example, it uses a digital finite impulse response filter to compensate line signal distortions, and it extracts the peak timing and amplitude from a set of several data points for each hit, using a neural network. We present an overview of the SVD data readout system, along with front-end electronics, cabling, power supplies and data processing.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a distinct element method (DEM) for estimating the shear resistance force of filled gravels in stair-shaped and flexible steel frames such as a gabion. The filled gravels were modelled by the DEM, using assembled elements to take into consideration the roughness of their surfaces, which produced interlocking and rotational resistance, among other effects. The assembled elements used in this study consisted of six similar-sized overlapping spherical elements symmetrically arranged in the shape of a regular octahedron. The ratio of the non-overlapped depth to the diameter of the spherical elements was termed the protruding coefficient β, which could be used to control the internal friction angle of the filled gravels and represent their dilatancy. The angle of repose of the gravels, which were filled in a stair-shaped steel frame check dam or a flexible steel frame such as a gabion, could be easily measured in the field. By inserting the value the experimental angle of repose into the relationship between the analytical angle of repose and the protruding coefficient β, the protruding coefficient β of the gravel model is obtained. The analytical angle of repose obtained by the assembled element model was identical with the value experimentally determined for the adopted gravels. The experimental results for both the stair-shaped frame and the real-size gabion were simulated using the proposed method to evaluate the shear resistance force. The analytical and experimental results were observed to be in good agreement.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the ratio R(D*) = B((B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)tau(-)(nu) over bar (tau))/B((B) over bar (0) -> D*(+)l(-)(nu) over bar (l))where l denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. We select a sample of B-0(B) over bar (0) pairs by reconstructing both B mesons in semileptonic decays to D*(-/+)l(+/-). We measure R(D*) = 0.302 +/- 0.030(stat) +/- 0.011(syst), which is within 1.6 sigma of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where the standard deviation sigma includes systematic uncertainties. We use this measurement to constrain several scenarios of new physics in a model-independent approach.

Abstract

The upgrade of the Belle II experiment plans to use a vertex detector based on two different technologies, DEPFET pixel (PXD) technology and double side silicon microstrip (SVD) technology. The vertex electronics are characterized by the topology of SVD bias that forces to design a sophisticated grounding because of the floating power scheme. The complex topology of the PXD power cable bundle may introduce some noise inside the vertex area. This paper presents a general overview of the EMC issues present in the vertex system, based on EMC tests on an SVD prototype and a study of noise propagation in the PXD cable bundle based on Multi-conductor transmission line theory.

Abstract

The Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector comprises four layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs), consisting of ladders with two to five sensors each. All sensors are individually read out by APV25 chips with the Origami chip-on-sensor concept for the central DSSDs of the ladders. The chips sit on flexible circuits that are glued on the top of the sensors. This concept allows a low material budget and an efficient cooling of the chips by a single pipe per ladder. We present the construction of the first SVD ladders and results from precision measurements and electrical tests.

Abstract

A silicon vertex detector (SVD) for the Belle-II experiment comprises four layers of double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs), assembled in a ladder-like structure. Each ladder module of the outermost SVD layer has four rectangular and one trapezoidal DSSDs supported by two carbon-fiber ribs. In order to achieve a good signal-to-noise ratio and minimize material budget, a novel chip-on-sensor “Origami” method has been employed for the three rectangular sensors that are sandwiched between the backward rectangular and forward (slanted) trapezoidal sensors. This paper describes the bonding procedures developed for making electrical connections between sensors and signal fan-out flex circuits (i.e., pitch adapters), and between pitch adapters and readout chips as well as the results in terms of the achieved bonding quality and pull force.

Abstract

The Belle-II VerteX Detector (VXD) has been designed to improve the performances with respect to Belle and to cope with an unprecedented luminosity of 8 × 10 35 cm − 2 s − 1 achievable by the SuperKEKB. Special care is needed to monitor both the radiation dose accumulated throughout the life of the experiment and the instantaneous radiation rate, in order to be able to promptly react to sudden spikes for the purpose of protecting the detectors. A radiation monitoring and beam abort system based on single-crystal diamond sensors is now under an active development for the VXD. The sensors will be placed in several key positions in the vicinity of the interaction region. The severe space limitations require a challenging remote readout of the sensors.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider in Japan is designed to indirectly probe new physics using approximately 50 times the data recorded by its predecessor. An accurate determination of the decay-point position of subatomic particles such as beauty and charm hadrons as well as a precise measurement of low-momentum charged particles will play a key role in this pursuit. These will be accomplished by an inner tracking device comprising two layers of pixelated silicon detector and four layers of silicon vertex detector based on double-sided microstrip sensors. We describe herein the design, prototyping and construction efforts of the Belle-II silicon vertex detector.

Abstract

The Fine Pixel CCD (FPCCD) is one of the candidate vertex detectors for the ILC. We performed neutron irradiation test of the FPCCD with CYRIC proton beam line at Tohoku University. After the irradiation of 19-year neutron fluence at the 500 GeV high luminosity ILC, the performance of the FPCCD was tested. The dark current increased but was still three order of magnitude smaller than signal charge. The fraction of hot pixels increased to 1.2 × 10−5 which is enough small for operation. Charge transfer inefficiencies for horizontal and vertical directions were measured to be 3.49 × 10−5 and 6.34 × 10−5, respectively. Even for the farthest pixel from a readout channel, 63% of signal remains after the transfer. We conclude that neutron fluence at the 500 GeV high luminosity ILC is not a problem for the FPCCD.

Abstract

The process e(+)e(-) -> gamma chi(cJ) (J = 1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb(-1) of data at and around the Gamma(nS) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetricenergy e(+)e(-) collider. No significant signal is observed except from psi(2S) decays. Upper limits on the cross sections between root s = 3.80 and 5.56 GeV are determined at the 90% credibility level, which range from a few pb to a few tens of pb. We also set upper limits on the decay rate of the vector charmonium [psi(4040), psi(4160), and psi(4415)] and charmoniumlike [Y(4260), Y(4360), and Y(4660)] states to gamma chi(cJ).

Abstract

We search for the decay B+ -> l(+)nu(l)gamma with l(+) = e(+) or mu(+) using the full Belle data set of 772 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We reconstruct one B meson in a hadronic decay mode and search for the B+ -> l(+)nu(l)gamma decay in the remainder of the event. We observe no significant signal within the phase space of E-gamma(sig) > 1 GeV and obtain upper limits of B(B+ -> e(+)nu(e)gamma) mu(+)nu(mu)gamma) l(+)nu(l)gamma) < 3.5 x 10(-6) at 90% credibility level.

Abstract

We report the measurement of the direct CP asymmetry in the radiative B¯→X(s+dγ) decay using a data sample of (772 ± 11)×10(6) BB[over ¯] pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. The CP asymmetry is measured as a function of the photon energy threshold. For Eγ*≥2.1 GeV, where Eγ* is the photon energy in the center-of-mass frame, we obtain A(CP)(B¯→X(s+dγ))=(2.2±3.9±0.9)%, consistent with the standard model prediction.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric e + e − collider in Japan will operate at a luminosity approximately 50 times larger than its predecessor (Belle). At its heart lies a six-layer vertex detector comprising two layers of pixelated silicon detectors (PXD) and four layers of double-sided silicon microstrip detectors (SVD). One of the key measurements for Belle II is time-dependent CP violation asymmetry, which hinges on a precise charged-track vertex determination. Towards this goal, a proper assembly of the SVD components with precise alignment ought to be performed and the geometrical tolerances should be checked to fall within the design limits. We present an overview of the assembly procedure that is being followed, which includes the precision gluing of the SVD module components, wire-bonding of the various electrical components, and precision three dimensional coordinate measurements of the jigs used in assembly as well as of the final SVD modules.

Abstract

Adsorption of aromatic compounds by organic adsorbent, activated carbon and synthetic resin particles is a common separation technique. Fixed bed adsorber is generally employed for this kind of separation. The organics are adsorbed on the particles present in the fixed bed and spent adsorbent particles are recovered subsequently by regeneration media—solvent or hot steam and so on. Organic adsorbents, including activated carbon, possess high affinity with aromatic compounds so that desorption process faces a difficult task. Pseudo-moving bed technique cannot be applied in such a system. High concentration of organic solution is generally separated by the bed. Conversely, inorganic adsorbents have a weak adsorptive affinity towards aromatic compounds. Silica gel (SG) and high-silica zeolite (HSZ) particles were, therefore, employed as adsorbents in this study, and benzothiophene and naphthalene dissolved in isooctane were used as adsorbates. A series of adsorption and desorption experiments was performed in either a single or a binary component system. Both the adsorption and desorption isotherms were superimposed on each other, indicating that the organic compounds were adsorbed reversibly on the inorganic particles. It was also found that the amount of benzothiophene was adsorbed with same quantity whether the experiments were performed in a single or binary system, and the similar results were found for naphthalene.

Abstract

A position-sensitive proportional counter with the backgammon position-reading method has been developed for thermal neutron detection. The use of a thin solid layer of 10 B and a high-pressure counting gas of 6-atm Ar+10%CH 4 has enabled us to obtain the position resolution well below 1.0 mm. Moreover, it was clearly revealed that the deterioration and/or the splitting of position-peak structure, observed in some conditions, originated in the strong correlational behavior between position information and avalanche size. It is explained qualitatively that this phenomenon is caused by the effect of self-induced space charge.

Abstract

A design methodology for reducing seeking noise in a hard disk drive has been developed. This method can optimize the seeking current according to a shock-response-spectrum analysis. It was verified experimentally that this method can reduce the seeking noise by about 4 dBA on average without increasing the seeking time.

Abstract

The Digital Time-Series Data Acquisition System using first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory module has been developed for the monitoring of subcritical reactivity. The system records arriving time of the signal from a neutron detector, and time-series data are saved in a personal computer (PC). Using this system, the measurement of time-series data is carried out more efficiently than that using a conventional multichannel scaler (MCS) system, and it has been applied for the monitoring of subcritical reactivity of the reactor in a steady state using the conventional Feynman-/spl alpha/ technique. In the present work, this system was applied for the monitoring of subcritical reactivity in an unsteady state using the difference filter technique. The test experiment was carried out with the research reactor of Atomic Energy Institute of Kinki University, Japan. From the experimental results, it was shown that the present system was useful for the continuous monitoring of varying subcritical reactivity by application of the difference filter technique.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy e+e− collider in KEK, Japan will operate at an instantaneous luminosity 40 times larger than that of its predecessor, Belle. It is built with an aim of collecting a huge amount of data (50 ab−1 by 2025) for precise CP violation measurements and new physics search. Thus, we need an accurate vertex determination and reconstruction of low momentum tracks which will be achieved with the help of vertex detector (VXD). The Belle II VXD consists of two layers of DEPFET pixels (`Pixel Detector') and four layers of double-sided silicon microstrip sensors (`Silicon Vertex Detector'), assembled over carbon fibre ribs. In this paper, we discuss about the Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector, especially its design and key features; we also present its module (`ladder') assembly and testing procedures.

Abstract

We describe a stable lightwave synthesized frequency sweeper (LSFS) using a Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity composed of two Faraday rotator mirrors (FRMs). In the former half of this paper, we numerically simulate the behavior of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise accumulations, and show that angular deviations of the FRMs can cause instability in the frequency sweep span. We also show that the span is stabilized by placing a polarizer in one of the FRMs because the FP cavity then works as a single-polarization cavity with a small transmittance fluctuation. Experimental results confirming the stability of this LSFS are provided in the latter half of this paper.

Correction equations of the coincidence-summing effect for efficiencies of HpGe detector based on the decay scheme were developed by considering the summing up to triple coincidence. The correction equations which do not dependent on the kind of the Ge detector are very useful for efficiency calibrations of a Ge detector in the energy region from 60 to 400 keV by using75Se radionuclide even with very short source-to-detector distances.

Abstract

The isotope shift of an optical transition $(\ensuremath{\lambda}=534.93 \mathrm{nm})$ in ${\mathrm{Ce}}^{+}$ for radioactive ${}^{144}\mathrm{Ce}$ has been measured by collinear laser-ion-beam spectroscopy as well as those of stable isotopes. The change in mean-square nuclear charge radius determined from the isotope shift is $\ensuremath{\delta}〈{r}^{2}{〉}^{142,144}=0.232(20) {\mathrm{fm}}^{2},$ and compared with the values from the reduced $E2$ transition probability and the theoretical predictions.

This paper reports the polycondensation of benzyl 2-amino-2-deoxy-a-D-glucopyranoside hydrochloride (1) with carbon dioxide using the triphenylphosphine/carbon tetrachloride/DBU system as a condensing agent to give poly(urethane) (2). The polycondensation of 1 with CO 2 was carried out in DMF solvent in the presence of the condensing agent under CO 2 atmosphere. From the NMR and IR analyses of the product, the polymerization proceeded regioselectively to form 2. The molecular weight was estimated as 2000-3000 by GPC measurement after acetylation of 2, corresponding to DP=5-8.

Abstract

The current study was conducted to compare the effects of post-treatment with oestrogen on histological and neurological outcomes after short (7-day) and long (28-day) recovery periods in rats subjected to transient forebrain ischaemia.Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of five groups: vehicle (7-day recovery period), vehicle (28-day recovery period), oestrogen (17β-estradiol 200 μg/kg, 7-day), oestrogen (17β-estradiol 200 μg /kg, 28-day), or sham surgical (n = 8 in each group). After forebrain ischaemia was induced with bilateral carotid artery occlusion and haemorrhagic hypotension (mean arterial pressure = 40 mmHg) for 10 min, the brain was reperfused for 7 or 28 days. Either 17β-estradiol or vehicle was injected intravenously during the initial 2 min of reperfusion. To evaluate histological damage, the number of intact neurons per 1 mm in the hippocampal CA1 subfield was counted at 7 or 28 days after transient forebrain ischaemia.At 7 days after ischaemia, the number of intact neurons in the hippocampal CA1 subfield was significantly greater in the oestrogen group [57.5 (46.5)/mm: median (interquartile range)] than in the vehicle group [10 (19.5) /mm; P = 0.014]. However, there was no difference between groups at 28 days after ischaemia [vehicle: 11 (20)/mm vs. oestrogen: 6 (11)/mm]. The neurological deficit scores in the oestrogen and vehicle groups were not different from the sham group at any point post-ischaemia.The current study indicates that post-ischaemic administration of oestrogen provided short-term but not long-term neuroprotective effects in transient forebrain ischaemia in rats.

Abstract

CdS undergoes a reversible phase transition from the wurtzite to the rock-salt structure at 2.6 GPa. The LO Raman mode of samples retrieved from the high pressure phase shows a remarkable shift towards lower frequency relative to the LO mode of a single crystal. This shift is explained by the formation of nanocrystals and its interpretation in terms of the spatial correlation model yields nanocrystal diameters ranging from 6.7 to 10 nm. The diameter depends on the highest pressure applied. When pressure is applied again to a sample retrieved from a high pressure cycle, the phase transition pressure has been found to increase compared with that of a single crystal sample. These results lead to an explanation for the question why the wurtzite and rock-salt structures coexist beyond the onset of the phase transition in CdS.

Abstract

Novel concepts of X-ray production by relativistic electrons in stratified targets are developed. It is shown that by transmitting an electron beam through a compound target, consisting of a periodic multifoil structure and a crystal, it is possible to obtain the intense, tunable, quasi-monochromatic X-rays, emitting at large (Bragg) angles with respect to the electron beam axis due to the diffraction on the crystal of resonance transition radiation, previously generated in the multilayered structure. The first results of experimental investigation of this effect for 900 MeV electrons, transmitting through the periodic stack of 10 Mylar foils and pyrolytic graphite crystal, are presented. The obtained results show that, by using of the combined radiator, it is possible to produce much more intense X-rays than parametric X-ray radiation, emitting by relativistic electrons due to the diffraction of virtual photons of electron eigenfield during the electron passage through the crystal.

We solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the wave function as an expansion in powers of the Planck mass by using heat kernel regularization. To solve the next-leading-order equation in this expansion, we introduce additional terms which are proportional to three-dimensional scalar curvature and Ricci tensor in the heat equation. We have an approximate wave function up to next-leading-order in this expansion. Expectation values computed with the leading-order approximation are reduced to the expectation value in three-dimensional Euclidean Einstein gravity theory in the region which is much smaller than the Planck scale. This means that the «New phase» (the dynamical system described by the three-dimensional quantum Einstein gravity) exists in the region beyond the Planck scale. We also discuss the renormalization group equation for the wave function of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation.

Abstract

We have performed a search for a 17-keV neutrino in the internal bremsstrahlung spectrum accompanying the electron capture decay of {sup 71}Ge by using an ultra-large-size HpGe detector. Special attention was paid to get the well-producing response function, the accurate peak-detection efficiency, and the appropriate counting condition in which the pileup effect can be almost negligible. All these made it possible to compare the experimental spectrum with the theoretical one without using any shape factor or smooth function. We excluded the possibility of the 17-keV neutrino with mixing fraction of (1.6{plus_minus}0.8)% obtained by {hacek Z}limen {ital et} {ital al}. Our upper limit for the mixing fraction of the 17-keV neutrino was estimated to be 0.6% at 95% confidence level with {ital Q}=232.65{sub {minus}0.24}{sup +0.34} keV.

Rates of occurrence and degrees of imposex, and tissue concentrations of organotin compounds (tributyltin, TBT; dibutyltin, DBT; butyltin, MBT; triphenyltin, TPT; diphenyltin, DPT; and phenyltin, MPT) in the rock shell, Thais clavigera and T. bronni (Mollusca: Gastropoda) were investigated at 32 sites in Japan from May 1990 to October 1992. The rate of occurrence of imposex was 100% in both species, at almost all sites surveyed. Degrees of imposex indicated by relative penis length (RPL) index reflected the pollution levels not only of TBT, but also TPT. In heavily polluted areas, many individuals were found with oviducts which were blocked by vas deferens development, and capsule glands which were filled with aborted egg masses. These organisms were thought to be sterile.

Abstract

Excited states in 154,156,158,160 Gd have been populated through the multiple coulomb excitation process by 32 S, 48 Ti, 58 Ni ions. The ground band, γ-band and octupole K π = 0 − band were extended to I π = 16 + , (12 + ), and (11 − ) state respectively in 160 Gd. The octupole K π = 1 − band was extended to I π = 9 − state in 158 Gd. Excitation cross sections of individual levels relative to that of the I π = 4 + state in the ground band in each nucleus were compared with the simulation by the computer code GOSIA within the framework of the pure rotational model. From these comparisons the matrix elements for both intra-band and inter-band transitions were deduced.
