1. Shear Bond Comparison between 4 Bioceramic Materials and Dual-cure Composite Resin

Abstract: Introduction Bioceramic materials have shown biologic and physical properties favorable for regenerative treatment. A key to treatment success is an adequate restoration to prevent microleakage; however, research is limited regarding the bond strength between restorative and bioceramic materials used in regenerative procedures. This study compared the bond strength between 4 bioceramic materials and a dual-cure composite resin. Methods Eighty wells in Teflon (ePlastics, San Diego, CA) blocks were filled with bioceramic materials representing 4 groups: White ProRoot mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK), Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fosses, France), EndoSequence Root Repair Material Fast Set Putty (Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), and NeoMTA (Avalon Biomed Inc, Houston, TX). After allowing samples to set according to the manufacturers’ instructions, exposed surfaces of the bioceramic materials were prepared using ClearFil SE Bond (Kuraray America, Inc., New York, NY) followed by restoration with ClearFil DC Core Plus (Kuraray America, Inc.). To test shear bond strength, each block was secured in a universal testing machine, and the crosshead was advanced at 0.5 mm/min until fracture. Newton peak force was recorded and megapascals calculated followed by data comparison. Results The mean shear bond strengths between ClearFil DC Core Plus and the bioceramic materials were as follows: White ProRoot MTA, 7.96 MPa; Biodentine, 9.18 MPa; EndoSequence Root Repair Material Fast Set Putty, 4.47 MPa; and NeoMTA, 5.72 MPa. White ProRoot MTA and Biodentine were statistically similar, with a higher stress bond strength than NeoMTA, which had a statistically greater bond strength than EndoSequence Root Repair Material. All these values were lower than typical bond strengths shown for dentin–composite resin bonding. Conclusions The choice of which bioceramic material to use in regenerative procedures should be based on factors other than the bond between that material and the overlying coronal resin restoration.

Abstract: Introduction Limited field cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has become a modality frequently used by endodontists to evaluate the teeth and surrounding tissues of their patients. Accurate image interpretation is vital to obtain needed treatment information as well as to discern coincidental findings that could be present. The goal of this study was to determine the accuracy of CBCT volume interpretation when performed by endodontists and endodontic residents. Methods Eighteen deidentified limited field CBCT scans were obtained and evaluated by an oral and maxillofacial radiologist and an endodontist experienced in reading CBCT images. Their collective findings were combined as the “gold standard” of interpretation for this investigation. Using standard CBCT software, 4 practicing endodontists and 5 second-year endodontic residents evaluated each scan and recorded any notable findings and whether or not each scan warranted referral to a radiology specialist. Their interpretations were then compared with the gold standard to determine accuracy and any significant differences among the groups. Results The overall accuracy was 58.3% for endodontists and 64.3% for residents. Paired t tests showed no statistically significant differences in accuracy between the 2 groups for findings in teeth or in bone, but residents were significantly better for maxillary sinus findings. Endodontists agreed with the gold standard 38.9% of the time and residents 49.8% of the time on necessity of referral. The Cohen kappa coefficient showed moderate agreement between the groups. Conclusions Endodontists and residents had similar accuracy in CBCT scan evaluation. More training and experience are warranted for both groups in order to maximize image assessment accuracy.

Abstract: Introduction Endocyn, a pH-neutral solution of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite has been developed for use as an endodontic irrigant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Endocyn on human periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts, rat osteosarcoma cells (UMR-106), and stem cells of the apical papilla (SCAP) compared with other commonly used endodontic irrigants. Methods To determine cytotoxicity, cells were exposed to various concentrations of Endocyn, 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 17% EDTA, and 2% chlorhexidine for 10 minutes, 1 hour, or 24 hours. Cell survival was measured fluorescently using calcein AM. Endocyn also was tested for its ability to inhibit SCAP proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity. Finally, SCAP transcript expression was examined via reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Results Endocyn was no more toxic to PDL and UMR cells than water for up to 24 hours. Endocyn concentrations of 50% were toxic to SCAP after 1 hour of exposure. Endocyn concentrations of >20% inhibited SCAP proliferation, whereas concentrations of ≥10% inhibited alkaline phosphatase activity. Exposure of SCAP to 10% Endocyn for 3 days did not alter most transcript expression, but did significantly reduce the expression of alkaline phosphatase, fibromodulin, and osteomodulin. Conclusion Endocyn was significantly less cytotoxic to PDL, UMR-106, and SCAP cells compared with other commonly used endodontic irrigants. High concentrations of Endocyn did inhibit some transcript expression and alkaline phosphatase activity, indicating a potential reduction in the osteogenic potential of stems cells exposed to Endocyn.

Abstract: Introduction This study compared images displayed on 1 desktop monitor, 1 laptop monitor, and 2 tablets for the detection of contrast and working length interpretation, with a null hypothesis of no differences between the devices. Methods Three aluminum blocks, with milled circles of varying depth, were radiographed at various exposure levels to create 45 images of varying radiographic density. Six observers viewed the images on 4 devices: Lenovo M92z desktop (Lenovo, Beijing, China), Lenovo Z580 laptop (Lenovo), iPad 3 (Apple, Cupertino, CA), and iPad mini (Apple). Observers recorded the number of circles detected for each image, and a perceptibility curve was used to compare the devices. Additionally, 42 extracted teeth were imaged with working length files affixed at various levels (short, flush, and long) relative to the anatomic apex. Observers measured the distance from file tip to tooth apex on each device. The absolute mean measurement error was calculated for each image. Analysis of variance tests compared the devices. Observers repeated their sessions 1 month later to evaluate intraobserver reliability as measured with weighted kappa tests. Interclass correlation coefficients compared interobserver reliability. Results There was no significant difference in perceptibility detection between the Lenovo M92z desktop, iPad 3, and iPad mini. However, on average, all 3 were significantly better than the Lenovo Z580 laptop (P values ≤.015). No significant difference in the mean absolute error was noted for working length measurements among the 4 viewing devices (P = .3509). Conclusions Although all 4 viewing devices seemed comparable with regard to working length evaluation, the laptop computer screen had lower overall ability to perceive contrast differences.

Abstract: Recent nickel-titanium manufacturing processes have resulted in an alloy that remains in a twinned martensitic phase at operating temperature. This alloy has been shown to have increased flexibility with added tolerance to cyclic and torsional fatigue. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of repeated simulated clinical use and sterilization on cutting efficiency and flexibility of Hyflex CM rotary files.Cutting efficiency was determined by measuring the load required to maintain a constant feed rate while instrumenting simulated canals. Flexibility was determined by using a 3-point bending test. Files were autoclaved after each use according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Files were tested through 10 simulated clinical uses. For cutting efficiency, mean data were analyzed by using multiple factor analysis of variance and the Dunnett post hoc test (P.05). For flexibility, mean data were analyzed by using Levene's Test of Equality of Error and a general linear model (P.05).No statistically significant decrease in cutting efficiency was noted in groups 2, 5, 6, and 7. A statistically significant decrease in cutting efficiency was noted in groups 3, 4, 8, 9, and 10. No statistically significant decrease in flexibility was noted in groups 2, 3, and 7. A statistically significant decrease in flexibility was noted in groups 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11.Repeated simulated clinical use and sterilization showed no effect on cutting efficiency through 1 use and no effect on flexibility through 2 uses.

Abstract: Introduction The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the biocompatibility of a novel formulation of a silicone-based endodontic sealer GuttaFlow 2 (GF2; Coltene/Whaledent, Langenau, Germany) with the original (GFO) and fast-set (GFF) formulations of GuttaFlow and with an epoxy resin sealer, AHPlus Jet (AH+J; Dentsply, York, PA). Methods Sealers were set into 3 × 5.5 mm discs. Cell culture media was used to extract leachable products at 24 hours and 1, 2, and 4 weeks. Primary human periodontal ligament fibroblasts were incubated with sealer elutes for 24 hours and evaluated using the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and the calcein AM assay. Cell attachment was evaluated on set sealer that was either rinsed or unrinsed with cell media for 1 week. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student t test. Results Both calcein and 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays revealed that periodontal ligament cell viability was reduced on AH+J at 1, 2, and 4 weeks compared with all GuttaFlow sealers. There were no differences in cell viability between the GuttaFlow samples, and all displayed high rates of cell survival at all time periods. After 2 hours, cell attachment to the rinsed GFO and GFF samples exceeded the control, and at 24 hours cell attachment on all GuttaFlow samples exceeded the control. AH+J sealers supported significantly less cell attachment when compared with all GuttaFlow sealers. Cell attachment to set sealers showed better cell attachment when rinsed compared with unrinsed. Conclusions GuttaFlow sealers were more biocompatible than AHJ in vitro. The novel GF2 displayed comparable biocompatibility with GFF and GFO.

Abstract: Beam-based feedback systems play an essential role in the operation of high energy electron-positron linear colliders. Ground motion, vibration and other disturbances can significantly alter the beam trajectory or degrade the beam quality. Feedback systems are required for long term stability and for case and efficiency of operation. Trajectory feedback for the Next Linear Collider (NLC) has been studied extensively to understand both the achievable orbit quality and the time response characteristics. More recently, these studies have been extended to evaluate performance in the presence of ground motion.

Abstract: The Gamma-ray Large Area Space telescope (GLAST) is a gamma-ray satellite scheduled for launch in 2008. Before the assembly of the Tracker subsystem of the Large Area Telescope (LAT) science instrument of GLAST, every component (tray) and module (tower) has been subjected to extensive ground testing required to ensure successful launch and on-orbit operation. This paper describes the sequence and results of the environmental tests performed on an engineering model and all the flight hardware of the GLAST LAT Tracker. Environmental tests include vibration testing, thermal cycles and thermal-vacuum cycles of every tray and tower as well as the verification of their electrical performance.

Abstract: Introduction The purpose of this study was to evaluate coronal tooth discoloration of ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Johnson City, TN), white ProRoot MTA, EndoSequence Root Repair Material (Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), MTA Angelus (Angelus Solucoes Odontologicas, Londrina, Brazil), and Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur des Fosses, France) when used in an ex vivo pulpotomy model. Methods Freshly extracted mandibular third molars were collected and stored in 1% chloramine-T solution. Teeth were randomly assigned into 6 groups (n = 15) and stored individually in phosphate buffered saline at 37°C in 100% humidity. A standardized endodontic access was made in 5 groups. A 3-mm-thick increment of reparative material was placed on the pulpal floor, covered by glass ionomer, and the access opening restored with composite. Color (Commission Internationale de l'eclairage L*a*b*) was recorded with the Vita Easy Shade spectrophotometer (VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Sackingen, Germany) on the midbuccal surface at baseline; after access preparation; after material placement; and then after 1, 7, 30, and 60 days. Changes in Commission Internationale de l'eclairage L*a*b* were measured for each experimental group and compared with ProRoot MTA (positive control) and no treatment (negative control) using the following equation: ΔE = ([Li − L0*]2 + [ai − a0*]2 + [bi − b0*]2)1/2. The mean results were analyzed within each group and between groups using the Friedman 2-way analysis post hoc test (P Results There were no significant differences between white ProRoot MTA, MTA Angelus, and the positive control group. EndoSequence Root Repair Material and Biodentine produced significantly less discoloration than white ProRoot MTA, MTA Angelus, and ProRoot MTA. Conclusions Under the conditions of this study, EndoSequence and Biodentine had significantly less discoloration compared with white ProRoot MTA, MTA Angelus, and ProRoot MTA. The potential for discoloration may or may not correlate when materials are used clinically.

Abstract: A unique electronics system has been built and tested for reading signals from the silicon-strip detectors of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope mission. The system amplifies and processes signals from 884 736 36-cm long silicon strips in a 4times4 array of tower modules. An aggressive mechanical design fits the readout electronics in narrow spaces between the tower modules, to minimize dead area. This design and the resulting departures from conventional electronics packaging led to several fabrication challenges and lessons learned. This paper describes the fabrication processes and how the problems peculiar to this design were overcome

15. The Effect of Insertion Rates on Fill Length and Adaptation of a Thermoplasticized Gutta-Percha Technique

Abstract: The purpose of this in vivo study was to determine the effect of the insertion rate of a thermoplasticized gutta-percha obturation technique (Thermafil Plus) on the quality of the root canal obturation. A calibrated practitioner obturated the tooth in each of three groups with insertion rates of 18, 6, and 3 mm/s, respectively. The quality of the obturation was assessed by measuring the length of fill and the replication of induced canal irregularities, consisting of dimples and grooves. All measurements were made on a single tooth, with a working length of 18 mm from the canal orifice, embedded in a split mold, with 20 measurements for each insertion rate. Measurements were made under a low-power microscope, with the images recorded on videotape. The length of fill decreased with decreasing the insertion rate, from a mean overextension of +0.88 mm (SD 1.12 mm) for the 18 mm/s rate to a mean underfill of -0.13 mm (SD 1.03 mm) for the 3 mm/s rate. A trend of decreasing fill with decreasing insertion rate was observed, with the difference between the insertion rates of 18 mm/s and 3 mm/s being statistically significant at p0.05 using a single comparison test. Replication of dimples decreased with decreasing the insertion rate from a mean reproduction of 99% for the 18 mm/s rate to a mean reproduction of 90% for the 3 mm/s rate. The replication of grooves also decreased with decreasing the insertion rate from a mean reproduction of 100% for the 18 mm/s rate to a mean reproduction of 88% for the 12 mm/s rate. Statistical analysis of the data for both the dimples and the grooves using a paired comparison post hoc Scheffe test found these differences are significant at p0.05.

17. Evaluation of 4 Different Irrigating Systems for Apical Extrusion of Sodium Hypochlorite

Abstract: Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate NaOCl apical extrusion by using negative apical pressure (EndoVac), sonic agitation (EndoActivator), side-vented needle (Max-i-Probe), and photon induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS 10 mJ and PIPS 20 mJ) laser irrigation in an in vitro gel model. Methods Extracted mandibular and maxillary central incisors ( n = 18) were prepared to size 35/.04 and 55/.04, respectively. Teeth were mounted in transparent containers with clear acrylic and suspended in a color-changing pH-sensitive gel, creating a closed system. By using a crossover design, each tooth was sequentially irrigated by using 6% NaOCl with each device following manufacturers' recommendations. Each tooth served as its own control. Pre-irrigation and post-irrigation buccal and proximal view photographs served to measure the longest distance of extrusion and were analyzed with ImageJ software. Mean results were analyzed by using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn post hoc test ( P Results There were no significant differences between EndoVac, EndoActivator, and the passive extrusion groups. The EndoVac and EndoActivator groups produced significantly less extrusion than PIPS irrigation. Max-i-Probe extrusion results were more variable than those of EndoActivator but had no significant difference. Across all irrigation systems, there were no significant differences with respect to apical preparation size. Conclusions Under the in vitro conditions of this study, no difference was found between the 10 mJ and 20 mJ PIPS laser groups. EndoVac demonstrated significantly less potential for apical extrusion than PIPS and Max-i-Probe, whereas apical preparation size did not significantly affect extrusion of irrigant. The potential for apical extrusion of endodontic irrigants should be a consideration when selecting a system for final irrigation.

Abstract: We present measurements of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurement uses a data sample of 23x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BbarB decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we find events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a CP eigenstate containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result is sin2beta = 0.34+/-0.20 (stat)+/-0.05 (syst).

19. Evaluation of pigmented intraorifice barriers in endodontically treated teeth

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three pigmented glass ionomer cements used as intraorifice barriers to prevent coronal microleakage. One hundred ten extracted mandibular human premolars were divided into four experimental groups of 25 teeth each and two control groups of 5 teeth each. The experimental teeth were instrumented and obturated using thermoplasticized gutta-percha and AH26 sealer. Group 1 teeth received no further treatment. Teeth in groups 2 through 4 had 1 of 3 pigmented glass ionomers (Vitrebond, GC America, and Ketac-Bond) placed as an intraorifice barrier. Positive control teeth were instrumented but not obturated. The negative control teeth were instrumented, obturated, and externally sealed with epoxy resin. The coronal 3 mm of each root was sealed into the lumen of an 18-mm segment of latex surgical tubing. After the apparatus was sterilized, 2.0 ml of a 24 h growth of Proteus vulgaris in trypticase soy broth (TSB) was placed in the coronal reservoir of the tooth. The inoculated apparatus was placed into a presterilized test tube containing 1.5 ml of TSB and incubated for 90 days at 37 degrees C. The TSB in the lower reservoir was observed daily for turbidity, which would indicate leakage along the full length of the obturated root canal. To determine if differences in microbial leakage occurred among the four experimental groups, Pearson's chi 2 and Fisher's exact tests were performed. The confidence level was set at 95%. The positive and negative controls validated the microbial testing method. The teeth without an intraorifice barrier leaked significantly more than teeth with Vitrebond intraorifice barriers (p0.05). The difference in leakage among the experimental glass ionomer barriers was not significant (p0.05).

Abstract: Objective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a hydroxylapatite-based material and calcium sulfate when each was used under a resin-modified glass ionomer cement to repair furcation perforations. Study design. Perforations of pulp chamber floors were made in 72 teeth of 9 dogs. Perforations were divided into 3 equal-sized groups and repaired with resin-modified glass ionomer either alone or over an artificial floor. The artificial floor was either a hydroxylapatite-based material or calcium sulfate. Three dogs were killed at each of 3 intervals (1, 3, and 6 months). The tissue response to the tested materials was evaluated clinically, radiographically, and histologically. Results. The hydroxylapatite-based material showed the highest radiographic success; this was followed by calcium sulfate and glass ionomer. From histologic evaluation, the average success rate was found to be 67% for calcium sulfate, 62% for the hydroxylapatite-based material, and 59% for glass ionomer. However, there was no statistical significant difference with the resin-modified glass ionomer when it was used alone and when it was used over a barrier. There was also no significant difference between the hydroxylapatite-based material and the calcium sulfate when they were used as artificial floors. Conclusion. The use of an artificial floor may not be necessary when flowable resin-modified glass ionomer cements are used.

Abstract: ▪ Abstract The use of feedback to stabilize the beam and improve the performance of accelerators is becoming more common. The methods used to design the feedback algorithms are introduced and some practical implementation details are described. The design of a PID loop using classical control techniques is covered as is the design of an optimal controller using modern control theory. Some adaptive control techniques are also briefly described. Examples are given of multiple-input-multiple-output loops and of how to handle systems of many interacting feedback loops.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the torsional properties of stainless steel K-type .02 taper and nickel-titanium U-type .02 and .04 taper instruments. Torsion tests were performed on all three designs of instruments according to ANSI/ADA specification number 28. For each design, 20 instruments of each of three sizes (15, 25, and 35) were tested. The three parameters measured were maximum torque, torque at failure, and angular deflection. Stainless steel K-type .02 taper and nickel-titanium U-type .02 and .04 taper instruments met or exceeded specification standards for maximum torque. They also satisfied and far exceeded the standards for angular deflection at the failure point. The stainless steel instruments showed no significant difference between maximum torque and torque at failure, whereas both of the nickel-titanium instruments showed a significant differential between maximum torque and torque at failure.

Abstract: Introduction Procedures used in single-visit or multiple-visit approaches to apical barrier creation were used with an experimental apexification model to test the surface hardness of 3 materials. The purpose of this study was to examine the microhardness of the materials after setting in moist or dry conditions. Methods A simulated open apex and periapical environment model was created using polyethylene tubes placed into a porous block filled with phosphate-buffered saline. White ProRoot Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA; Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK), EndoSequence Root Repair Material (ESRRM; Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), and Biodentine (BD; Septodont, Louisville, CO) were mixed and placed into the apical 4 mm of the tubes ( N = 15). The moist group had a damp cotton pellet above the test materials (mineral trioxide aggregate or ESSRM) with Fuji II LC (GC America, Alsip, IL) sealing the coronal segment. The dry group had gutta-percha placed directly against the test materials with amalgam sealing the coronal segment. After 10 days of storage in 100% humidity at 37°C, samples were sectioned, and microhardness was independently measured at 2 mm and 4 mm from the apical end. Differences were assessed using analysis of variance and a Tukey post hoc test (α = .05). Results Analysis of variance analyses showed no significant effect of wet or dry conditions on resultant material hardness. A Tukey post hoc test showed that using ESRRM and BD would not result in a significant difference in hardness, but using MTA would result in statistically significant different hardness values when compared with ESRRM or BD. Conclusions Either a moist or dry environment could allow hardening of materials; thus, both methods could be acceptable for clinical treatment procedures.

Abstract: Access openings and furcation perforations were prepared in 60 human extracted teeth and randomly divided into four equal groups. Plaster of Paris barriers were created in all perforations. The defects were obturated using either glass ionomer or composite resin with or without acid etching of the dentin. The pulp chambers and access openings were filled with composite resin. After immersion in 2% methylene blue solution for 2 weeks, the teeth were sectioned longitudinally and dye penetration was measured under a stereomicroscope using the NIH Image 1.47 Macintosh program. The results indicated that light-cured glass ionomer provided a significantly better seal than did the light-cured composite resin with or without dentin preparation and acid etching. The glass ionomer allowed significantly less dye penetration when used on etched dentin than it did on nonetched dentin.

Abstract: Eighty-one dental students instrumented two curved canals in acrylic blocks with the use of stainless steel files in one block and nitinol files in the other. Overlay tracings were made of photographs taken before and after instrumentation of the acrylic blocks and differences between the tracings were measured along the canal walls. The canals instrumented with nitinol files were shaped better than those instrumented with stainless steel files; working length was maintained more often without ledging the canal walls and with less zipping of the apical foramen.

Abstract: Introduction The purpose of this study was to determine the shaping ability of 3 nickel-titanium (NiTi) endodontic file systems by measuring canal transportation. Methods Seventy-two S-shaped canals in resin blocks were randomly allocated into 3 groups ( n = 24): the Self-Adjusting File (SAF; ReDent Nova, Ra’anana, Israel) group, the Typhoon group (Typhoon rotary files with Controlled Memory Wire; DS Dental, Johnson City, TN), and the Vortex group (ProFile Vortex rotary files with M-Wire NiTi; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK). Blocks were secured in a jig for imaging standardization and instrumentation stabilization. Gates Glidden and PathFile drills (25 mm/.02 taper) were used to prepare the glide paths. For the Typhoon and Vortex groups (25 mm/.04 taper), canals were flooded with sterile water and instrumented using a crown-down technique from sizes 40 to 20/.04 and then apically enlarged to size 30/.04. The SAF group (25 mm) was instrumented with constant sterile water irrigation in a light-pecking, transline motion. Pre- and postinstrumentation images were taken at 40× magnification and layered, and canal transportation was measured. Results After adjusting for the level and canal wall side, the mean transportation was significantly higher for the Typhoon ( P P = .005) groups compared with the SAF group. Additionally, the mean transportation was significantly higher for the Typhoon group versus the Vortex group ( P Conclusions Under the conditions of this study, SAFs showed less canal transportation than ProFile Vortex and Typhoon files in simulated S-shaped root canals.

Abstract: Access to and awareness of oral healthcare in the United States have been highlighted in the mass media and discussed among diverse populations. The current surge to provide access to oral healthcare for citizens springs from this quagmire of oral healthcare issues which affects global to local (grassroots) communities. Publications by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Health for All and the United States' Healthy People have set into motion an agenda by which institutions, healthcare professionals and governments can develop action plans to foster and nurture grassroots organizations to address these issues. An initiative has been undertaken by members of the faculty, student doctors and staff of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Dentistry (UTHSC CoD) and its partners. This cadre of volunteers has implemented grassroots efforts for the citizens of western Tennessee to date as the flagship of Tennessee Smiles: UT Grassroots Oral Health Outreach Initiative (Tennessee Smiles). By participation in health fairs, school programs and other cultural events, these volunteers have made a difference in the lives of thousands of Tennessee citizens who need exposure to information regarding their oral health care needs. The authors discuss the basis for the Tennessee Smiles organization, their successes and challenges. Future plans and the need for support of the organization are emphasized.

Abstract: Furcation perforations were created in the pulpal floor of 60 teeth and were repaired with amalgam alone, plaster of Paris under amalgam, light-cured glass ionomer alone, and plaster of Paris under light-cured glass ionomer. After the access openings were filled with composite resin, the teeth were immersed in 2% erythrocin B dye solution for 2 wk, sectioned longitudinally, and dye penetration was measured. The light-cured glass ionomer group provided the least amount of leakage, followed by the group of plaster of Paris under glass ionomer. The groups using amalgam alone and plaster of Paris under amalgam showed the most leakage. The plaster of Paris barrier prevented the overextension of the repair materials when used under amalgam and glass ionomer.

Abstract: Recent innovative manufacturing techniques have produced nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments with reports of superior properties compared with standard NiTi files. These include Profile Vortex made from M-Wire (PV), Twisted Files (TF), and 10 Series files made from CM Wire (CM). Sterilization is recommended before use and is repeated if files are reused and/or carried forward between cases. The purpose for this study was to compare the effects of multiple autoclaving cycles on the torsional load resistance of these 3 new rotary endodontic files.PV, TF, and CM files (n = 100; size 25/.04) were divided into 5 groups (n = 20). Files were steam autoclaved for 1, 2, 3, and 7 sterilization cycles. A control group was not subjected to autoclaving. Files were tested in a torsiometer in general accordance with ISO 3630-1 standards. Torsional load and degrees of rotation to failure were recorded. Mean data were analyzed by using Kruskal-Wallace/Dunn post hoc tests (P.05).Autoclave cycles had no significant overall effect on file performance for any of the instrument systems tested. PV and CM displayed significantly greater resistance to torsional load than TF (P.001) but were not different from each other (P.05). Angular deflection values for TF and CM were significantly higher than for PV (P.001), with TF demonstrating greater rotational distortion than CM (P.05).Under the conditions of this study, repeated steam autoclaving did not affect torsional resistance for unused files of the systems evaluated. In addition, CM Wire files might have a combined advantage of greater torsional strength and high deformation before failure.

Abstract: Two light-cured materials, Vitrebond and Prisma VLC Dycal, were compared with two chemically cured materials, Ketac Fil and Dycal, for ability to seal furcation perforations. Access openings and furcation perforations were prepared in 60 teeth and randomly divided into four equal groups. Furcation perforations were repaired with each of the tested materials, and the access openings were filled with composite resin. After teeth were immersed in 2% erythrocin B dye solution for 10 days, they were sectioned longitudinally and dye penetration was measured. The light-cured materials allowed statistically significant less dye leakage than did the chemically cured materials.

Abstract: The three-dimensional obturation of the root canal system is widely accepted as a key factor for successful endodontic therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the obturation of lateral canals and the main canal using three gutta-percha sealer techniques: cold lateral condensation, warm lateral condensation, and warm vertical condensation. Sixty epoxied blocks with five lateral canals placed at varying angles from the main canal were used. Each experimental group was treated by a board-certified endodontist with training and clinical experience in that obturation technique. There was no statistically significant difference (p0.05) between the obturation techniques in the ratio of the void area to the gutta-percha-plus-sealer area for the main canal. There was significantly (p0.001) more sealer in the lateral canals for the two lateral condensation techniques. The warm obturation techniques had significantly (p0.001) more gutta-percha in the lateral canals.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}\mathit{R}}$) for Z boson production by ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider which utilized a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The average beam polarization was (22.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)%. Using a sample of 10 224 Z decays, we measure ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}\mathit{R}}$ to be 0.100\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.044(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.004(syst), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathit{W}}^{\mathit{e}\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$=0.2378 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0056(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0005(syst).

Abstract: Using an impact-parameter tag to select an enriched sample of Z0bb» events, we have measured the difference between the average charged multiplicity of bb» and all hadronic Z0 decays to be 2.11.8(stat) 0.6(syst) tracks per event. The resulting total (nonleading) charged multiplicity for Z0 bb» events is 23.1(12.0)1.8 0.6 tracks. A comparison of this nonleading multiplicity to hadronic multiplicity data in the range of 10 to 60 GeV supports the hypothesis of flavor-independent hadronic fragmentation, and yields a measurement of the average energy fraction of bottom hadrons in Z0 decays of xEb=0.620.100.04. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: A new feedback system has been developed that stabilizes the SLC beams at many locations. The feedback loops are designed to sample and correct at the repetition rate of the accelerator. Each loop can be distributed across several INTEL 80386 microprocessors that control the SLC hardware. A new communications system, KISNET, has been developed to pass data between the microprocessors at this rate. The software is written using the state space formalism of digital control theory and is database driven. This allows a new feedback loop to be implemented by setting up the on-line database and perhaps installing a communications link. Eighteen such loops have now been implemented and this has measurably improved the performance of the accelerator.

Abstract: We have measured the fraction of {ital b{bar b}} events in hadronic {ital Z}{sup 0} decays, {ital R}{sub {ital b}{ital {bar b}}}, using the vertex detector system of the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We tag {ital b{bar b}} events by requiring the coincidence of three or more tracks with significant impact parameters. This tag is 50% efficient and results in a sample of 85% purity. We find {ital R}{sub {ital b}{ital {bar b}}}=0.251{plus minus}0.049{plus minus}0.030, in good agreement with other measurements and the standard model prediction.

Abstract: A precise measurement of the ratio R of the total cross section e+e-hadrons to the pointlike cross section e+e-+- at a center-of-mass energy of 29.0 GeV is presented. The data were taken with the upgraded Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The result is R=3.920.050.09. The luminosity has been determined with three independent luminosity monitors measuring Bhabha scattering at different angular intervals. Recent calculations of higher-order QED radiative corrections are used to estimate the systematic error due to missing higher-order radiative corrections in the Monte Carlo event generators. © 1991 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Two-photon interactions have been studied with the SLAC-LBL Mark II magnetic detector at SPEAR. The cross-section for η′ production by the reaction e+e− → e+e−η′ has been measured over the beam energy range from 2 to 4 GeV. The radiative width Tγγ(η′) has been determined to be 5.8 ± 1.1 keV (±20% systematic uncertainty). Upper limits on the radiative widths of the f(1270), A2(1310), and f′(1515) mesons have been determined. The two-prong final state events show a signal for the f(1270) decaying into η+π− . The current status of this analysis has been discussed.

Abstract: We have tested QED to fourth order in the coupling constant {alpha} in the large-{ital Q}{sup 2} region by studying four-lepton final states in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} interactions with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP ({radical}{ital s} =29 GeV). All four final-state particles were detected at large angles with respect to the beam axis. For an integrated luminosity of 205 pb{sup {minus}1}, we observed ten {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{ital e+}{ital e}{sup {minus}}, ten {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, and one {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} events with opposite-charge pair masses greater than 1 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. These events show good agreement with the complete {alpha}{sup 4} QED calculation.

Abstract: We have searched for supersymmetric particles in 528 Z decays with the Mark II detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. We place 95%-confidence-level lower mass limits on degenerate squarks, nondegenerate up-type squarks, nondegenerate down-type squarks, charginos, pair-produced unstable neutralinos, and neutralinos from associated production. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: A questionnaire was sent to diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics to determine changing trends in the treatment of endodontic emergencies since Dorn's survey 10 yr ago. There is a definitely greater trend toward complete instrumentation of the root canals to the apex regardless of the emergency condition than there was a decade ago. The number of respondents who leave teeth open when the pulp is nonvital has dropped dramatically in the past decade. When there is no periapical involvement, over one third of the respondents are completing treatment in one visit. A decrease in the use of classic phenolic medicaments was noted with a corresponding increase in calcium hydroxide or no medication at all.

Abstract: Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e + e − annihilation at √ s =29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b (b) quark decays to a positive (negative) lepton to be 0.17 −0.08 +0.15 , with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38.

Abstract: We have measured inclusive distributions for charged particles in hadronic decays of the {ital Z} boson. The variables chosen for study were charged-particle multiplicity, scaled momentum, and momenta transverse to the sphericity axes. The distributions have been corrected for detector effects and are compared with data from {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation at lower energies and with the predictions of several QCD-based models. The data are in reasonable agreement with expectations.

Abstract: Using isolated leptons reconstructed in the Mark II detector to tag bb events, we measure the fraction of bb events in hadronic Z0 decays to be 0.23-0.09+0.11, in good agreement with the standard-model prediction of 0.22. Abstract: Data taken by the Mark II detector at the SLAC {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} storage ring PEP was used to search for exclusive decays of {ital D}{sup {plus minus}} and {ital B}{sup {plus minus}} mesons into two charged leptons plus a charged pion or kaon. All possible charge and lepton combinations consistent with charge conservation were considered and no evidence for any signals was found. We obtain upper limits for the various branching ratios ranging from 2.5{times}10{sup {minus}3} to 9.2{times}10{sup {minus}3}, at a 90% confidence level. Some of these limits can be used to constrain leptoquark masses in various models.

Abstract: The International Linear Collider (ILC) will be the largest most complicated accelerator ever built. For this reason extensive work is being done early in the design phase to ensure that it will be reliable enough. This includes gathering failure mode data from existing accelerators and simulating the failures and repair times of the ILC. This simulation has been written in a general fashion using MATLAB and could be used for other accelerators. Results from the simulation tool have been used in making some of the major ILC design decisions and an unavailability budget has been developed.

Abstract: The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope represents a great advance in space application of silicon detectors. With a surface of 80 m 2 and about 1 M readout channels it is the largest silicon tracker ever built for a space experiment. GLAST is an astro-particle mission that will study the mostly unexplored, high energy (20 MeV–300 GeV) spectrum coming from active sources or diffused in the Universe. The detector integration and test phase is complete. The full instrument underwent environmental testing and the spacecraft integration phase has just started: the launch is foreseen in late 2007. In the meanwhile the spare modules are being used for instrument calibration and performance verification employing the CERN accelerator complex. A Calibration Unit has been exposed to photon, electron and hadron beams from a few GeV up to 300 GeV. We report on the status of the instrument and on the calibration campaign.

The suppression of electrons in a magnet is a challenge for the positron damping ring of the International Linear Collider (ILC) as well as the Large Hadron Collider. Simulation show that grooved surfaces can significantly reduce the electron yield in a magnet. Some of the secondary electrons emitted from the grooved surface return to the surface within a few gyrations, resulting in a low effective secondary electron yield (SEY) of below 1.0 A triangular surface is an effective, technologically attractive mitigation with a low SEY and a weak dependence on the scale of the corrugations and the external magnetic field. A chamber with triangular grooved surface is proposed for the dipole and wiggler sections of the ILC and will be tested in KEKB in 2007. The strategy of electron cloud control in ILC and the optimization of the grooved chamber such as the SEY, impedance as well as the manufacturing of the chamber, are also discussed.

Abstract: The Fermilab Steering Group has developed a plan to keep U.S. accelerator-based particle physics on the pathway to discovery, both at the Terascale with the LHC and the ILC and in the domain of neutrinos and precision physics with a high-intensity accelerator. The plan puts discovering Terascale physics with the LHC and the ILC as Fermilab's highest priority. While supporting ILC development, the plan creates opportunities for exciting science at the intensity frontier. If the ILC remains near the Global Design Effort's technically driven timeline, Fermilab would continue neutrino science with the NOVA experiment, using the NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) proton plan, scheduled to begin operating in 2011. If ILC construction must wait somewhat longer, Fermilab's plan proposes SNuMI, an upgrade of NuMI to create a more powerful neutrino beam. If the ILC start is postponed significantly, a central feature of the proposed Fermilab plan calls for building an intense proton facility, Project X, consisting of a linear accelerator with the currently planned characteristics of the ILC combined with Fermilab's existing Recycler Ring and the Main Injector accelerator. The major component of Project X is the linac. Cryomodules, radio-frequency distribution, cryogenics and instrumentation for the linac are themore » same as or similar to those used in the ILC at a scale of about one percent of a full ILC linac. Project X's intense proton beams would open a path to discovery in neutrino science and in precision physics with charged leptons and quarks. World-leading experiments would allow physicists to address key questions of the Quantum Universe: How did the universe come to be? Are there undiscovered principles of nature: new symmetries, new physical laws? Do all the particles and forces become one? What happened to the antimatter? Building Project X's ILC-like linac would offer substantial support for ILC development by accelerating the industrialization of ILC components in the U.S. and creating an engineering opportunity for ILC cost reductions. It offers an early and tangible application for ILC R&D in superconducting technology, attracting participation from accelerator scientists worldwide and driving forward the technology for still higher-energy accelerators of the future, such as a muon collider. To prepare for a future decision, the Fermilab Steering Group recommends that the laboratory seek R&D support for Project X, in order to produce an overall design of Project X and to spur the R&D and industrialization of ILC linac components needed for Project X. Advice from the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel will guide any future decision to upgrade the Fermilab accelerator complex, taking into account developments affecting the ILC schedule and the continuing evaluation of scientific priorities for U.S. particle physics. Fermilab should also work toward increased resources for longer-term future accelerators such as a muon collider, aiming at higher energies than the ILC would provide.« less
