Ce travail décrit les résultats obtenus lors de l'exercice d'intercomparaison 2016 des moniteurs de spéciation chimique des aérosols (ACSM) réalisé au Centre de calibrage des moniteurs chimiques des aérosols (ACMCC, France). Quinze ACSM quadripolaires (Q_ACSM) du réseau de l'Infrastructure européenne de recherche pour l'observation des aérosols, des nuages et des gaz à l'état de traces (ACTRIS) ont été étalonnés à l'aide d'une nouvelle procédure qui permet d'acquérir des données d'étalonnage dans les mêmes conditions de fonctionnement que celles utilisées lors de l'échantillonnage et donc d'obtenir des informations représentatives des performances des instruments. La nouvelle procédure d'étalonnage a notamment permis de réduire la dispersion des concentrations massiques de sulfate mesurées, améliorant ainsi la reproductibilité des mesures des espèces inorganiques entre les ACSM ainsi que la cohérence avec les instruments indépendants situés au même endroit. Les procédures d'étalonnage testées ont également permis d'étudier les artefacts des instruments individuels, tels que la surestimation du m/z 44 de l'aérosol organique. Cet effet a été quantifié par le rapport m/z (masse sur charge) 44 sur nitrate mesuré pendant les étalonnages du nitrate d'ammonium, avec des valeurs allant de 0,03 à 0,26, montrant qu'il peut être significatif pour certains instruments. La correction de la table de fragmentation proposée précédemment pour tenir compte de cet artefact a été appliquée aux mesures acquises au cours de cette étude. Pour certains instruments (ceux présentant des artefacts élevés), cette correction de la table de fragmentation a conduit à une "surcorrection" du signal f44 (m/z 44/Org). Cette correction, basée sur des mesures effectuées avec du NH4NO3 pur, suppose que l'ampleur de l'artefact est indépendante de la composition chimique. En utilisant des données acquises à différents rapports de mélange de NH4NO3 (à partir de solutions de NH4NO3 et de (NH4)2SO4), nous observons que l'ampleur de l'artefact varie en fonction de la composition. Nous avons appliqué ici une correction actualisée, dépendant de la fraction massique de NO3 ambiante, qui a permis d'améliorer la concordance du signal organique entre les instruments. Ce travail illustre les avantages de l'intégration de nouvelles procédures d'étalonnage et de corrections d'artefacts, mais souligne également les avantages de ces exercices d'intercomparaison pour continuer à améliorer notre connaissance du fonctionnement de ces instruments, et nous aider à interpréter la chimie atmosphérique., This work describes results obtained from the 2016 Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) intercomparison exercise performed at the Aerosol Chemical Monitor Calibration Center (ACMCC, France). Fifteen quadrupole ACSMs (Q_ACSM) from the European Research Infrastructure for the observation of Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases (ACTRIS) network were calibrated using a new procedure that acquires calibration data under the same operating conditions as those used during sampling and hence gets information representative of instrument performance. The new calibration procedure notably resulted in a decrease in the spread of the measured sulfate mass concentrations, improving the reproducibility of inorganic species measurements between ACSMs as well as the consistency with co-located independent instruments. Tested calibration procedures also allowed for the investigation of artifacts in individual instruments, such as the overestimation of m/z 44 from organic aerosol. This effect was quantified by the m/z (mass-to-charge) 44 to nitrate ratio measured during ammonium nitrate calibrations, with values ranging from 0.03 to 0.26, showing that it can be significant for some instruments. The fragmentation table correction previously proposed to account for this artifact was applied to the measurements acquired during this study. For some instruments (those with high artifacts), this fragmentation table adjustment led to an "overcorrection" of the f44 (m/z 44/Org) signal. This correction based on measurements made with pure NH4NO3, assumes that the magnitude of the artifact is independent of chemical composition. Using data acquired at different NH4NO3 mixing ratios (from solutions of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4) we observe that the magnitude of the artifact varies as a function of composition. Here we applied an updated correction, dependent on the ambient NO3 mass fraction, which resulted in an improved agreement in organic signal among instruments. This work illustrates the benefits of integrating new calibration procedures and artifact corrections, but also highlights the benefits of these intercomparison exercises to continue to improve our knowledge of how these instruments operate, and assist us in interpreting atmospheric chemistry.

Hintergrund Die milde Hypothermie ist bei der Behandlung nach einer erfolgreichen Reanimation fest etabliert und in den gultigen Leitlinien empfohlen. Aufgrund aktueller Studien kam es in den letzten Monaten zu einer intensiven Diskussion uber die Notwendigkeit einer Kuhlbehandlung bzw. Temperaturmanagements nach erfolgreicher praklinischer Reanimation. In der europaweiten PRINCE-Studie wurde erstmals die praklinische Anwendung eines transnasalen Verfahrens zur Hirnkuhlung hinsichtlich Durchfuhrbarkeit und Sicherheit wahrend einer Reanimation untersucht.

A photochemical box model constrained by ancillary observations was used to simulate OH and HO2 concentrations for three days of ambient observations during the HOxComp field campaign held in Jülich, Germany in July 2005. Daytime OH levels observed by four instruments were fairly well reproduced to within 33% by a base model run (Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Mechanism with updated isoprene chemistry adapted from Master Chemical Mechanism ver. 3.1) with high R2 values (0.72–0.97) over a range of isoprene (0.3–2 ppb) and NO (0.1–10 ppb) mixing ratios. Daytime HO2(*) levels, reconstructed from the base model results taking into account the sensitivity toward speciated RO2 (organic peroxy) radicals, as recently reported from one of the participating instruments in the HO2 measurement mode, were 93% higher than the observations made by the single instrument. This also indicates an overprediction of the HO2 to OH recycling. Together with the good model-measurement agreement for OH, it implies a missing OH source in the model. Modeled OH and HO2(*) could only be matched to the observations by addition of a strong unknown loss process for HO2(*) that recycles OH at a high yield. Adding to the base model, instead, the recently proposed isomerization mechanism of isoprene peroxy radicals (Peeters and Müller, 2010) increased OH and HO2(*) by 28% and 13% on average. Although these were still only 4% higher than the OH observations made by one of the instruments, larger overestimations (42–70%) occurred with respect to the OH observations made by the other three instruments. The overestimation in OH could be diminished only when reactive alkanes (HC8) were solely introduced to the model to explain the missing fraction of observed OH reactivity. Moreover, the overprediction of HO2(*) became even larger than in the base case. These analyses imply that the rates of the isomerization are not readily supported by the ensemble of radical observations. One of the measurement days was characterized by low isoprene concentrations (∼0.5 ppb) and OH reactivity that was well explained by the observed species, especially before noon. For this selected period, as opposed to the general behavior, the model tended to underestimate HO2(*). We found that this tendency is associated with high NOx concentrations, suggesting that some HO2 production or regeneration processes under high NOx conditions were being overlooked; this might require revision of ozone production regimes.

Volcanic emissions from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption on the Southern fringe of Iceland in April 2010 were detected at the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) station Zugspitze/Hohenpeissenberg (Germany) by means of in-situ measurements, ozone sondes and ceilometers. Information from the German Meteorological Service (DWD) ceilometer network (Flentje et al., 2010) aided identifying the air mass origin. We discuss ground level in-situ measurements of sulphur dioxide (SO2), sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and particulate matter as well as ozone sonde profiles and column measurements of SO2 by a Brewer spectrometer. At Hohenpeissenberg, a number of reactive gases, e.g. carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, and particle properties, e.g. size distribution and ionic composition, were additionally measured during this period. Our results describe the arrival of the volcanic plume at Zugspitze and Hohenpeissenberg during 16 and 17 April 2010 and its residence in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) for several days thereafter. The ash plume was first seen in the ceilometer backscatter profiles at Hohenpeissenberg in about 6–7 km altitude. After entrainment into the PBL at noon of 17 April, largely enhanced values of sulphur dioxide, sulphuric acid and super-micron-particle number concentration were recorded at Zugspitze/Hohenpeissenberg till 21 April.

Hydroxyl radicals (OH) are the major oxidizing species in the troposphere. Because of their central importance, absolute measurements of their concentrations are needed to validate chemical mechanisms of atmospheric models. The extremely low and highly variable concentrations in the troposphere, however, make measurements of OH difficult. Three techniques are currently used worldwide for tropospheric observations of OH after about 30~years of technical developments: Differential Optical Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS), Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy (LIF), and Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (CIMS). Even though many measurement campaigns with OH data were published, the question of accuracy and precision is still under discussion. Here, we report results of the first formal, blind intercomparison of these techniques. Six OH instruments (4~LIF, 1~CIMS, 1~DOAS) participated successfully in the ground-based, international HOxComp campaign carried out in Jülich, Germany, in summer 2005. Comparisons were performed for three days in ambient air (3~LIF, 1 CIMS) and for six days in the atmosphere simulation chamber SAPHIR (3~LIF, 1~DOAS). All instruments were found to measure tropospheric OH concentrations with high sensitivity and good time resolution. The pairwise correlations between different data sets were linear and yielded high correlation coefficients (r2=0.75−0.96). Excellent absolute agreement was observed for the instruments at the SAPHIR chamber, yielding slopes between 1.01 and 1.13 in the linear regressions. In ambient air, the slopes deviated from unity by factors of 1.06 to 1.69, which can partly be explained by the stated instrumental accuracies. In addition, sampling inhomogeneities and calibration problems have apparently contributed to the discrepancies. The absolute intercepts of the linear regressions did not exceed 0.6×106 cm−3, mostly being insignificant and of minor importance for daytime observations of OH. No relevant interferences with respect to ozone, water vapour, NOx and peroxy radicals could be detected. The HOxComp campaign has demonstrated that OH can be measured reasonably well by current instruments, but also that there is still room for improvement of calibrations.

So far, field campaigns heavily equipped with aerosol mass spectrometers have been carried out mainly in large conurbations and in areas directly affected by their outflow, whereas lesser efforts have been dedicated to continental areas characterised by a less dense urbanisation. We present here the results obtained at a background site in the Po Valley, Italy, in summer 2009. For the first time in Europe, six state-of-the-art spectrometric techniques were used in parallel: aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS), two aerosol mass spectrometers (high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer - HR-ToF-AMS and soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer - SP-AMS), thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography (TAG), chemical ionisation mass spectrometry (CIMS) and (offline) proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. The results indicate that, under high-pressure conditions, atmospheric stratification at night and early morning hours led to the accumulation of aerosols produced by anthropogenic sources distributed over the Po Valley plain. Such aerosols include primary components such as black carbon (BC), secondary semivolatile compounds such as ammonium nitrate and amines and a class of monocarboxylic acids which correspond to the AMS cooking organic aerosol (COA) already identified in urban areas. In daytime, the entrainment of aged air masses in the mixing layer is responsible for the accumulation of low-volatility oxygenated organic aerosol (LV-OOA) and also for the recycling of non-volatile primary species such as black carbon. According to organic aerosol source apportionment, anthropogenic aerosols accumulating in the lower layers overnight accounted for 38% of organic aerosol mass on average, another 21% was accounted for by aerosols recirculated in residual layers but still originating in northern Italy, while a substantial fraction (41 %) was due to the most aged aerosols imported from transalpine areas. The different meteorological regimes also affected the BC mixing state: in periods of enhanced stagnation and recirculation of pollutants, the number fraction of the BC-containing particles determined by ATOFMS was 75% of the total, while in the days of enhanced ventilation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL), such fraction was significantly lower (50 %) because of the relative greater influence of non-BC-containing aerosol local sources in the Po Valley. An atmospheric pressure/chemical ionization mass spectrometer (AP/CIMS) has been developed for continuous long-term measurements of atmospheric OH and H2SO4. The corresponding methods both involve chemical ionization of H2SO4 by NO3− ions with OH being first titrated by excess SO2 to form equivalent concentrations of H2SO4 in the system. The chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) system has been operated since April 1998 at the Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg, a mountain research station of the German Weather Service in South Germany. A technical description of the apparatus is presented followed by a detailed estimate of uncertainties in calibration and ambient air measurements resulting from changes in instrumental and/or ambient parameters. Examples from both calibration runs and ambient air measurements are shown. For the present system and operating conditions accuracy, precision, and detection limit are estimated to be 39%, 30%, and 3 × 104 molecules cm−3 for H2SO4, and 54%, 48%, and 5 × 105 molecules cm−3 for OH measurements, respectively, based on 5 min signal integration.

[1] Recent studies have shown that measured OH under NOx-limited, high-isoprene conditions are many times higher than modeled OH. In this study, a detailed analysis of the HOx radical budgets under low-NOx, rural conditions was performed employing a box model based on the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCMv3.2). The model results were compared with HOx radical measurements performed during the international HOxComp campaign carried out in Julich, Germany, during summer 2005. Two different air masses influenced the measurement site denoted as high-NOx (NO, 1–3 ppbv) and low-NOx (NO, < 1 ppbv) periods. Both modeled OH and HO2 diurnal profiles lay within the measurement range of all HOx measurement techniques, with correlation slopes between measured and modeled OH and HO2 around unity. Recently discovered interference in HO2 measurements caused by RO2 cross sensitivity was found to cause a 30% increase in measured HO2 during daytime on average. After correction of the measured HO2 data, the model HO2 is still in good agreement with the observations at high NOx but overpredicts HO2 by a factor of 1.3 to 1.8 at low NOx. In addition, for two different set of measurements, a missing OH source of 3.6 ± 1.6 and 4.9 ± 2.2 ppb h−1 was estimated from the experimental OH budget during the low-NOx period using the corrected HO2 data. The measured diurnal profile of the HO2/OH ratio, calculated using the corrected HO2, is well reproduced by the MCM at high NOx but is significantly overestimated at low NOx. Thus, the cycling between OH and HO2 is better described by the model at high NOx than at low NOx. Therefore, similar comprehensive field measurements accompanied by model studies are urgently needed to investigate HOx recycling under low-NOx conditions.

Adding isomerization of isoprene peroxy radicals to the model increased OH and HO2 by 43% and 48% on average. Although these are still only 15% and 21% higher than the observations made by one of the instruments, larger overestimations (>60%) occurred with respect to the observations made by the other three instruments, suggesting that the rates of the isomerization were not readily supported by the ensemble of radical observations. These model runs tend to underestimate observed OH reactivity which may be explained by unmeasured hydrocarbon species. By selecting hydrocarbon types to be added to the model in amounts that accounted for the missing fractions of observed OH reactivity, the gaps between HOx observations and model results with and without isomerization could be individually diminished to within uncertainty levels. In this case, however, the HO2/OH ratio rose on addition of hydrocarbons and diverged from observations. In the case where we used modeled HO2(*), taking into account the sensitivity toward speciated RO2 (organic peroxy) radicals, as recently reported from one of the participating instruments in the HO2 measurement mode, the model's overestimation for HO2 became evident (by factors of more than 1.8). These results strongly indicated that more loss processes for peroxy radicals were necessary to explain the observations. One of the measurement days was characterized by low isoprene concentrations (~0.5 ppb) and OH reactivity that was well explained by the observed species, especially before noon. For this selected period, as opposed to the general behavior, the model tended to underestimate HO2 (and HO2(*)) with respect to observations made by the three instruments. We found that this tendency is associated with high NOx concentrations, suggesting that some HO2 production or HO2 regeneration processes under high NOx conditions were being overlooked; this might require revision of ozone production regimes.

At Hohenpeissenberg, a number of reactive gases, e.g. sulphuric acid, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides were additionally measured during the period of interest. Also ozone sondes were launched at Hohenpeissenberg in the pre-alpine area. A newly established network of ceilometers (Jenoptik CHM15K) at currently 36 meteorological stations in Germany provided the temporal evolution of emissions over Germany. The sensitivity of these instruments with respect to atmospheric aerosols further allowed the inversion of gathered backscatter profiles, and aerosol extinction coefficients and particle mass concentration were finally obtained.

[1] Atmospheric concentrations of gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4), methane sulfonic acid (MSA), and hydroxyl radicals (OH) were measured by chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) during the second New Particle Formation and Fate in the Coastal Environment (PARFORCE) campaign in June 1999 at Mace Head, Ireland. Overall median concentrations in marine background air were 1.5, 1.2, and 0.12 × 106 cm−3, respectively. H2SO4 was also present at night indicating significant contributions from nonphotochemical sources. A strong correlation was found between daytime OH and H2SO4 levels in clean marine air suggesting a fast local production of H2SO4 from sulfur precursor gases. Steady state balance calculations of ambient H2SO4 levels agreed with measured concentrations if either very low H2SO4 sticking coefficients (0.02–0.03) or sources in addition to the SO2 + OH reaction were assumed. Overall, variations in ambient H2SO4 levels showed no correlation with either the tidal cycle or ultrafine particle (UFP) concentrations. However, on particular days an anticorrelation between H2SO4 and UFP levels was occasionally observed providing evidence for the contribution of H2SO4 to new particle formation and/or particle growth. Gaseous MSA concentrations were inversely correlated with dew point temperature reflecting a highly sensitive gas-particle partitioning equilibrium of this compound. The present observations seriously question the general use of MSA as a conservative tracer to infer the relative production yield of H2SO4 from dimethylsulfide (DMS) oxidation. MSA/H2SO4 concentration ratios typically ranged between 0.06 and 1.0 in marine air at ground level. Measured diel OH profiles showed a significant deviation from concurrent variations of the ozone photolysis frequency. They also showed up to 1 order of magnitude lower values compared to OH concentrations calculated with a simple photochemical box model. These differences were most pronounced during particle nucleation events occurring on sunny days around noon and at low tide. The present results suggest that both the oxidation capacity and the particle formation potential in the coastal boundary layer were significantly affected by reactions of unknown compounds prevailing in this type of environment.
