1. First determination of the one-proton induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay width of p-shell Λ-Hypernuclei

Abstract

Previous studies of proton and neutron spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of eight Λ-Hypernuclei (A=5–16) have been revisited. New values of the ratio of the two-nucleon and the one-proton induced decay widths, Γ2N/Γp, are obtained from single proton spectra, Γ2N/Γp=0.50±0.24, and from neutron and proton coincidence spectra, Γ2N/Γp=0.36±0.14stat−0.04sys+0.05sys, in full agreement with previously published ones. With these values, a method is developed to extract the one-proton induced decay width in units of the free Λ decay width, Γp/ΓΛ, without resorting to Intra Nuclear Cascade models but by exploiting only experimental data, under the assumption of a linear dependence on A of the Final State Interaction contribution. This is the first systematic determination ever done and it agrees within the errors with recent theoretical calculations. Abstract

The recent determination of the partial decay widths for the one-proton and the two-nucleon induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Λ-Hypernuclei in the A=5–16 range permitted to reconstruct the full pattern of decay widths for 5ΛHe and 11ΛB. A consistency check on 12ΛC decay widths confirms the validity of the adopted method.

Abstract

Anaerobic sewage treatment is a proven technology in warm climate regions, and sponge-bed trickling filters (SBTFs) are an important post-treatment technology to remove residual organic carbon and nitrogen. Even though SBTFs can achieve a reasonably good effluent quality, further process optimization is hampered by a lack of mechanistic understanding of the factors influencing nitrogen removal, notably when it comes to mainstream anaerobically treated sewage. In this study, the factors that control the performance of SBTFs following anaerobic (i.e., UASB) reactors for sewage treatment were investigated. A demo-scale SBTF fed with anaerobically pre-treated sewage was monitored for 300 days, showing a median nitrification efficiency of 79% and a median total nitrogen removal efficiency of 26%. Heterotrophic denitrification was limited by the low organic carbon content of the anaerobic effluent. It was demonstrated that nitrification was impaired by a lack of inorganic carbon rather than by alkalinity limitation. To properly describe inorganic carbon limitation in models, bicarbonate was added as a state variable and sigmoidal kinetics were applied. The resulting model was able to capture the overall long-term experimental behaviour. There was no nitrite accumulation, which indicated that nitrite oxidizing bacteria were little or less affected by the inorganic carbon limitation. Overall, this study indicated the vital role of influent characteristics and operating conditions concerning nitrogen conversions in SBTFs treating anaerobic effluent, thus facilitating further process optimization.

Abstract

High-rate anaerobic treatment of sewage using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors is a consolidated technology in warm climate countries. Nevertheless, since anaerobic treatment only removes organic carbon, post-treatment is required to remove nitrogen, besides residual organic carbon. Trickling filters (TFs) constitute a cost-effective post-treatment option, assuring low sludge production, low operational costs and maintenance simplicity compared to other post-treatment technologies (e.g. activated sludge). This paper reviews the experience of the last 20 years of research, design and operation of UASB/TF systems. Three main topics are addressed: i) the development of trickling filters for UASB reactor effluent treatment, building on first experiences with TFs preceded by primary settlers; ii) the design criteria, performance and empirical models for predicting the efficiency of TFs post-UASB reactors; and iii) the future challenges associated with elimination of secondary settlers and nitrogen removal in sponge-bed trickling filters (SBTFs).

Abstract

The inelastic charge exchange reaction ( K + , K 0 ) on 7Li has been experimentally investigated close to threshold with the FINUDA spectrometer at the e + e − collider DAΦNE by searching for K S 0 decays. It is the first time that this process has been studied at such low momentum. An upper limit of 2.0 mb (at 95% confidence level) has been measured for the total cross section.

Abstract

Three candidate events of the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6Λ H were uniquely identified in the FINUDA experiment at DANE, Frascati, by observing π + mesons from the (K − stop,π +) production reaction on 6Li targets, in coincidence with π − mesons from 6Λ H→6He+ π − weak decay. Details of the experiment and the analysis of its data are reported, leading to an estimate of (2.9 ± 2.0) · 10−6/K − stop for the 6Λ H production rate times the two-body π − weak decay branching ratio. The 6 ΛH binding energy with respect to 5H+Λwas determined jointly from production and decay to be BΛ = (4.0±1.1) MeV, assuming that 5H is unbound with respect to 3H+2n by 1.7 MeV. The binding energy determined from production is higher, in each one of the three events, than that determined from decay, with a difference of (0.98±0.74) MeV here assigned to the 0+ g.s. →1+ excitation. The consequences of this assignment to Λ hypernuclear dynamics are briefly discussed.

Abstract

The FINUDA experiment has recently completed an extensive study of the weak decay of p-shell Λ-hypernuclei including both mesonic and non-mesonic modes. Charged mesonic decay rates have been determined based on the analysis of π − kinetic energy spectra, never measured before. The study of proton spectra from non-mesonic weak decay for p-shell hypernuclei, both single and in coincidence with a neutron, has triggered the investigation of the two-nucleon induced Λ N N → n N N decay channel: its weight has been evaluated to be Γ 2 / Γ N M = 0.21 ± 0.07 stat − 0.02 sys + 0.03 sys . Finally, a direct experimental evidence of the occurrence of the weak reaction Λ n p → n n p in nuclei is presented for the first time. Three events have been found which can be attributed to Li Λ 7 and Be Λ 9 two-nucleon induced non-mesonic weak decay; the kinematical analysis is discussed here.

Abstract

The FINUDA experiment performed a systematic study of the charged mesonic weak decay channel of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Negatively charged pion spectra from mesonic decay were measured with magnetic analysis for the first time for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$, ${^{9}_{\Lambda}Be}$, ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ and ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$. The shape of the $\pi^{-}$ spectra was interpreted through a comparison with pion distorted wave calculations that take into account the structure of both hypernucleus and daughter nucleus. Branching ratios $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}/\Gamma_{tot}$ were derived from the measured spectra and converted to $\pi^{-}$ decay rates $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}$ by means of known or extrapolated total decay widths $\Gamma_{tot}$ of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Based on these measurements, the spin-parity assignment $1/2^+$ for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$ and $5/2^+$ for ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ ground-state are confirmed and a spin-parity $3/2^+$ for ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$ ground-state is assigned for the first time., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The FINUDA spectrometer, devoted to hypernuclear physics and installed on the DAΦNE two rings collider at the Laboratori Nationali di Frascati, is able to monitor the relevant machine parameters, as luminosity, collision vertexes, c.m. energy and transversal momentum boost, during the process of data taking to study hypernuclear physics without affecting it. The collider parameters relevant to optimize the machine performances to the needs of the experiment are measured both on-line and offline in a run-to-run basis, in an efficient, redundant way, allowing the continuous extraction of reliable and cross-checked information on the machine working conditions.

Abstract

Lambda-hypernuclei are produced and studied, with the FINUDA spectrometer, for the first time at an e+e- collider: DAPHNE, the Frascati phi-factory. The slow negative kaons from phi(1020) decay are stopped in thin (0.2 g/cm^2) nuclear targets, and Lambda-hypernuclei formation is detected by measuring the momentum of the outgoing pi^-. A preliminary analysis on 12Lambda-C shows an energy resolution of 1.29 MeV FWHM on the hypernuclear levels, the best obtained so far with magnetic spectrometers at hadron facilities. Capture rates for the ground state and the excited ones are reported, and compared with previous experiments.

Abstract

This paper provides a summary of the first results obtained by the FINUDA Collaboration in the field of hypernuclear physics. They range from the spectroscopic study of several A-hypernuclei to the observation of some non-mesonic decay modes. Hints on rare hypernuclear two-body decays, on neutron-rich hypernuclei and on deeply-bound kaonic nuclei are also reported.

Abstract

The spin-parity analysis of the data on the pbar p → 2π+ 2π− annihilation reaction at rest in liquid and in gaseous hydrogen at 3 bar pressure and in flight at p momentum of ~ 50 MeV/c, collected by the Obelix spectrometer at the LEAR complex of CERN, is presented. The relative branching ratios (a1(1260) → σπ)/(a1(1260) → ρπ) = 0.06 ± 0.05 and (π(1300) → σπ)/(π(1300) → ρπ) = 2.2 ± 0.4 are obtained. It is also shown that the inclusion of the exotic meson π1(1400), JPC= 1−+, mass and width M = 1.384 ± 0.028, Γ = 0.378 ± 0.058 GeV/c2, in its decay to ρπ, improves the fit and some implications of these results are briefly discussed. The relative S and P-wave annihilation percentages in four charged pions at two target densities are obtained.

Abstract

New experimental results on p d annihilation at rest into pions plus a high momentum proton in the final state are discussed. The data sample was collected using the OBELIX spectrometer at the LEAR facility (CERN). The annihilation probabilities, or more precisely the yields (Y) via channels p d → 2π − π + π 0 p and p d → 3π − 2π + π 0 p with proton momenta p > 400 MeV/c have been measured for the first time: Y = (93.2 ± 1.6) × 10−4 and Y = (52.2 ± 1.4) × 10−4, respectively. The signal in the invariant mass distribution of the pπ+ system in the region of the well-known Δ++(1232)-isobar is clearly seen in reactions p d → 2π − π + p , p d → 2π − π + π 0 p , p d → 3π − 2π + p and p d → 3π − 2π + π 0 p . The upper limit on reaction p (Δ − Δ ++ ) → 2π − π + p in the p d annihilation at rest, which could be interpreted as a manifestation of the ΔΔ component of the deuteron, was found to be Y ≤ 6.5 × 10−5 with a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

New measurements of the pp total annihilation cross-section at very low momenta (around 50 MeV/c) confirm the previous results obtained by the OBELIX collaboration. The measured values are in general agreement with a scattering length approximation of the annihilation cross-section where the pp scattering lengths are obtained from measurement of the protonium shifts and widths and which accounts for the Coulomb interaction. Partial annihilation cross-sections and annihilation frequencies for some channels have been measured too. The values of the total and partial cross sections at the lowest p momentum show an unexpected behaviour

Abstract

The annihilation frequency of the reaction pp → π0π0 has been measured, for the first time by stopping antiprotons in a NTP hydrogen target. The obtained result ƒ(π0π0)NTP = (12.7±0.5±2.0)×10−4 is discussed in the frame of the study of the initial angular momentum of the p̄p system.

Abstract

SuperB is an INFN flagship project for a new high-luminosity heavy-flavor factory. Along with its companion detector, it is dedicated to the search for CP violation effects in the $B$ meson sector with the aim of looking for direct and indirect signals of new physics, beyond the Standard Model. However it could offer as well the opportunity for a systematic, high-statistics study of $b$ baryon properties and for a search for super-nuclei, that is bound nuclear systems with an explicit content of beauty.

Abstract

To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.

Abstract

Preliminary results of experiment FENICE performed at Adone e + e 2212 storage ring in Frascati are presented here. The J/ψ braching ratios have been determined. At q2 = 4.4GEV2 a new measurement of the proton form factor has been pero≼rmed and at q2 = 4.0 GeV2 a first, preliminary value of the neutron form factor G n =(0.42±0.06) is obtained, assuming |G E | |G M |.

Abstract

We have searched for a deeply bound kaonic state by using the FINUDA spectrometer installed at the e{sup +}e{sup -} collider DA{phi}NE. Almost monochromatic K{sup -}'s produced through the decay of {phi}(1020) mesons are used to observe K{sup -} absorption reactions stopped on very thin nuclear targets. Taking this unique advantage, we have succeeded to detect a kaon-bound state K{sup -}pp through its two-body decay into a {lambda} hyperon and a proton. Abstract

We have searched for a deeply bound kaonic state by using the FINUDA spectrometer installed at the e(+)e(-) collider DAPhiNE. Almost monochromatic K(-)'s produced through the decay of phi(1020) mesons are used to observe K(-) absorption reactions stopped on very thin nuclear targets. Taking this unique advantage, we have succeeded to detect a kaon-bound state K(-)pp through its two-body decay into a Lambda hyperon and a proton. The binding energy and the decay width are determined from the invariant-mass distribution as 115(+6)(-5)(stat)(+3)(-4)(syst) MeV and 67(+14)(-11)(stat)(+2)(-3)(syst) MeV, respectively.

Abstract

The effect of contaminants (H2, N2, Ne, Ar, Xe) on the time distribution of delayed annihilations (average delay time about 3 μs) of antiprotons stopped in helium gas, at 3 atm and room temperature, has been experimentally investigated. The annihilation rate is expressed in terms of an empirical «quenching cross-section»,\(\bar \sigma \), that is different for the different contaminants. For hydrogen and xenon at low concentrations,\(\bar \sigma \) is around 3.5·10−16 cm2, and is more than ten times larger than for the other contaminants. It has been observed that the addition of a contaminant, with the exception of neon, gives also rise to a delayed annihilation’s component that decays with an average time of some hundreds of nanoseconds. It seems that this fast component increases and its average time decreases as the contaminant concentration increases.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the K+K-, pi+pi- frequencies for pBAR annihilations at rest in a gaseous H-2 target at low pressure (5 mbar). We have obtained:f(pipi)=(4.26+/-0.11) X 10(-3), f(KK)=(0.46+/-0.03)X10(-3). The ratio R=f(KK)/f(pipi) has also been measured at a pressure of 2 mbar. Comparison with previous measurements shows that f(KK) decreases monotonically with the target density but its value at 5 mbar is still higher than the value with L X-rays in coincidence.

Abstract

A preliminary study of n¯p three-prong annihilations into the channels K− K+ π+ and π− π+ π+ π0 is presented for ∼ 100–297 MeV/c n¯ momenta. The extracted φπ+/ωπ+ production ratio shows that also in this channel, never measured before using an n¯p beam, the OZI rule is strongly violated.

Abstract

FINUDA is the hypernuclear physics experiment carried out at DAΦNE, the e^+e^- , ϕ-factory of the INFN Frascati Laboratory. The aim of the experiment is to study simultaneously the formation and decay of hypernuclei produced by the strangeness exchange reaction induced by the stopped $ K^- coming from the decay of the ϕ(1020) mesons. This paper presents the first preliminary results concerning spectrometer performances, hypernuclear formation and decay from the first FINUDA data set.

Abstract

The stopping power of H-2 for psBAR was measured in the pBAR energy interval 1 keV divided-by 120 keV using a low density gas target (rho/rho(o) = 10(-3) divided-by 10(-2), rho(o) being the H2 density at STP) with the OBELIX spectrometer at the LEAR of CERN. Furthermore, the formation of metastable states in the pBAR He-4 interaction at rest, having a mean life of the order of 3 mus, was investigated at six target gas pressures (3 atm and 400, 250, 200, 150, 50 mbar). The influence of contaminants (like H-2, Ne, Ar, N2 and Xe) on the life of such metastable states was examined at the target gas pressure of 3 atm.

Abstract

First results on meson spectroscopy using antineutrons as projectiles are reported. Three-body (π + π + π − ) and five-body (π + π + π + π − π − ) final states following the annihilation of 100 to 290 MeV/ c antineutrons on hydrogen were analyzed. The (π + π − ) invariant mass spectrum in the three-body reaction is accounted for by the ϱ 0 anf f 2 (1270) resonances, together with an enhancement around 1540 MeV, in the region of the AX (1565) and the f 2 (1515) resonances, whereas the best fit for the (π + π + π − π − ) invariant mass in five-body events shows the already reported structure ζ(1480) and suggests the presence of a second structure around 1650 MeV.

Abstract

A spin-parity analysis of a sample of p ̅p→ K^+ K^- π^+ π^- π^0 annihilation events taken at rest in gaseous H_{2} at NTP is reported. The invariant mass spectrum of the K^+ K^- π^0 system shows the presence of the E/iota resonance pattern at 1.42 GeV. The analysis of this signal confirms the results obtained by the OBELIX Collaboration in previous works, namely: the existence of two pseudoscalar states at 1.413±0.002 and 1.460 ± 0.012 GeV with widths 0.051 ±0.004 and 0.120 ± 0.015 GeV, respectively. The p ̅p system in the ^{3}P_{1} wave shows also a signal corresponding to the axial vector f_{1}(1420) decaying to K^{*}{K} with mass 1.420 ± 0.003 GeV and width 0.061±0.005 GeV. A study of the incoherent phase space background shows that its origin is mostly due to the reflection of a resonant state in the K^+ K^- π^+ π^- system. The isobar decomposition of this resonant state is mainly f_{0}(1370)(ππ)_{S}, its parameters are: J^{PC} = 0^{++}, m = 1.670 ± 0.02 GeV and width 0.267±0.036 GeV. This signal can be probably identified with another decay mode of the f_{0}(1710).

Abstract

The p p annihilation cross-sections at 66.4–68.9–71.4 MeV/c have been measured using the presently instrumented part of the OBELIX spectrometer. The results have been obtained at p energies ( ≃ 2.5 MeV) by one order of magnitude smaller than in any existing experiment concerning the in-flight antiproton-proton annihilation. The average value obtained over the total interval 65.1–72.5 MeV/c, βσanT = 33.2 ± 1.7 (stat.) ±1.8 (syst.) mb, in agreement with a specific calculation, would favour for the spin-averaged S-wave scattering length the value (−0.7 + i0.8) fm. The branching ratios for the annihilations in two, four and six charged mesons turn out to be quite similar to those for annihilation at rest in liquid hydrogen.

Abstract

The study of the K^± K_miss^0 π^± π^+ π^- Channel (7016 events), from p ̅p annihilations in a gaseous hydrogen target at NTP, with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR (CERN), is presented. A spin-parity analysis provides evidence for two axial vectors, one in low KK ̅π mass region, the well established f_1(1285), decaying to a_0(980)π, the second, the 1^++ component of the old puzzling E/i, the f_1(1420), decaying mainly to K^*K ̅, seen for the first time in p ̅p annihilation at rest. The analysis confirms the dominant production of the pseudoscalar η(1405), decaying mainly to (Kπ)_sK ̅, and the existence of a second pseudoscalar in the same mass region, the η(1460), decaying mainly to K*K ̅.

Abstract

A new measurement of the total e^+e^- ->hadrons cross-section in the centre of mass energy range 1,8-2,5 GeV, performed by the FENICE experiment at the Frascati e^+ e^- storage ring ADONE, is presented. The behaviour of the total cross section together with the proton electromagnetic time-like form factor is discussed in terms of a narrow vector resonance close to the nucleon-antinucleon threshold.

Abstract

Several methods are discussed, which reduce substantially the number of amplifiers required for the readout of a proportional multiwire chamber. 1. 1. The plane of wires is built as a lumped delay line. The difference in the arrival time of the pulse at the two ends of the line determines the position of the active wire. 2. 2. The wires are connected to a resistive attenuator network The ratio of the pulse heights arriving at the two ends localizes the active wire. 3. 3. The wires can be connected in different subgroups by transformer coupling.

Abstract

The ϕπ^+/ωπ^+ ratio from n ̅p annihilations on a liquid hydrogen target, for n ̅ momenta between 64 and 297 MeV/c, was measured using the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR. The ratio R(ϕπ/ωπ) = σ(n ̅p -> ϕπ^+)/σ(n ̅p->ωπ^+) turned out 0.110±0.015_stat ± 0.006_syst. Implications of this result on the OZI rule are discussed.
