1. X-ray bursts and burst oscillations from the slowly spinning X-ray pulsar IGR J17480-2446 (Terzan 5)

Abstract

The newly discovered 11 Hz accreting pulsar, IGR J17480-2446, located in the globular cluster Terzan 5, has shown several bursts with a recurrence time as short as few minutes. The source shows the shortest recurrence time ever observed from a neutron star. Here we present a study of the morphological, spectral and temporal properties of 107 of the bursts observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The recurrence time and the fluence of the bursts clearly anticorrelate with the increase of the persistent X-ray flux. The ratio between the energy generated by the accretion of mass and that liberated during bursts indicate that Helium is ignited in a Hydrogen rich layer. Therefore we conclude that all the bursts shown by IGR J17480-2446 are Type-I X-Ray bursts. Pulsations could be detected in all the brightest bursts and no drifts of the frequency are observed within 0.25 Hz of the spin frequency of the neutron star. These are also phase locked with respect to the pulsations observed during the persistent emission and no rise of the rms associated to the pulse frequency is observed during the burst. This behavior would favor a scenario where the flash is ignited within a region which is consistent to be as large as the neutron star surface., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables. Abstract

Tracking the motions of transient jets launched by low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is critical for determining the moment of jet ejection, and identifying any corresponding signatures in the accretion flow. However, these jets are often highly variable and can travel across the resolution element of an image within a single observation, violating a fundamental assumption of aperture synthesis. We present a novel approach in which we directly fit a single time-dependent model to the full set of interferometer visibilities, where we explicitly parameterise the motion and flux density variability of the emission components, to minimise the number of free parameters in the fit, while leveraging information from the full observation. This technique allows us to detect and characterize faint, fast-moving sources, for which the standard time binning technique is inadequate. We validate our technique with synthetic observations, before applying it to three Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the black hole candidate LMXB MAXI J1803-298 during its 2021 outburst. We measured the proper motion of a discrete jet component to be $1.37\pm0.14$ mas/hr, and thus we infer an ejection date of MJD $59348.08_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$, which occurs just after the peak of a radio flare observed by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA), while MAXI J1803-298 was in the intermediate state. Further development of these new VLBI analysis techniques will lead to more precise measurements of jet ejection dates, which, combined with dense, simultaneous multi-wavelength monitoring, will allow for clearer identification of jet ejection signatures in the accretion flow., 15 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Accretion disks around compact objects are expected to enter an unstable phase at high luminosity. One instability may occur when the radiation pressure generated by accretion modifies the disk viscosity, resulting in the cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales. Such a scenario, however, has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole. Although there are hints of these cycles in a few isolated cases, their apparent absence in the variable emission of most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a lingering puzzle. Here we report the presence of the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star. Moreover, we show that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum-from radio to X-ray-of both black holes and neutron stars at high accretion rates can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable, producing relativistic ejections during transitions that deplete or refill the inner disk. Such new association allows us to identify the main physical components responsible for the fast multiwavelength variability of highly accreting compact objects., Comment: Published in Nature. 26 pages, 10 figures. 5. Spectral variability of GX 339−4 in a hard-to-soft state transition★

Abstract

We report on INTEGRAL observations of the bright black-hole transient GX 339-4 performed during the period August-September 2004. Our data cover three different spectral states, namely Hard/Intermediate State, Soft/Intermediate State and High/Soft State. We investigate the spectral variability of the source across the different spectral states. The hard X-ray spectrum becomes softer during the HIMS-to-SIMS transition, but it hardens when reaching the HSS state. A principal component analysis demonstrates that most of the variability occurs through two independent modes: a pivoting of the spectrum around 6 keV (responsible for 75% of the variance) and an intensity variation of the hard component (responsible for 21%). The pivoting is interpreted as due to changes in the soft cooling photon flux entering the corona, the second mode as fluctuations of the heating rate in the corona. Our spectral analysis of the spectra of GX 339-4 shows a high energy excess with respect to pure thermal Comptonisation models in the HIMS: a non-thermal power-law component seems to be requested by data. In all spectral states joint IBIS, SPI and JEM-X data are well represented by hybrid thermal/non-thermal Comptonisation (EQPAIR). The spectral evolution seems to be predominantly driven by a reduction of the ratio of the electron heating rate to the soft cooling photon flux in the corona, l_h/l_s. The inferred accretion disc soft thermal emission increases by about two orders of magnitude, while the Comptonised luminosity decreases by at most a factor of 3. This confirms that the softening we observed is due to a major increase in the flux of soft cooling photons in the corona associated with a modest reduction of the electron heating rate., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS Main Journal

Abstract

LOFT (Large area Observatory For X-ray Timing) is an innovative mission concept for a next generation of X-ray timing experiments. Recent developments in the field of Silicon detectors allow to design a realistic observatory devoted to X-ray timing studies with an effective area around 13 m2, in the energy range 2–30 keV. In this paper we present the mission concept together with the key properties of the detectors, as demonstrated in our laboratory, including an energy resolution better than 500 eV at room temperature. The overall power and weight budgets fit to a standard mission design. Such an exceedingly large area (>20 times RXTE/PCA), with a time resolution better than 10 µs, will allow unprecedently fast and accurate time variability studies related to accreting compact objects (e.g. fast coherent pulsations and QPOs). We describe here the scientific performance of a timing observatory in the 10 m2 class for open problems in fundamental physics, such as strong gravity effects, the measurement of the mass of black holes and neutron stars, the equation of state of ultradense matter. Finally, we present the results of simulated LOFT observations.

7. X-ray selected Wolf-Rayet stars: The discovery of Th35-42 and prospects for future X-ray surveys

Abstract

The X-ray source 1E 1024.0-5732, serendipitously discovered with the Einstein Observatory, was previously interpreted as a rapidly spinning neutron star, accreting matter from its massive early-type companion, the emission-line star Th35-42. However, new ROSAT data do not support the presence of a neutron star in this source. A more likely scenario, also indicated by recent optical spectroscopy, involves X-ray emission from the colliding winds of a WR+O binary. Surprisingly, this star remained unnoticed during an extensive optical search for new Wolf-Rayet stars, carried out in this region of sky. Stimulated by the discovery of this first X-ray selected WR star, we have undertaken a search for similar objects in the data from the ROSAT All Sky Survey.

Abstract

H1743‐322 is a bright BHC observed by HEAO‐1 in 1977. The source underwent again in outburst in 2003 after about 25 years. After the 2003 outburst (the brightest one) the source exhibited other 5 outbursts. We report a brief summary of the results found during a campaign of X‐ray observations performed with RXTE during the two 2008 outbursts. In particular the October 2008 outburst showed a singular behaviour that has been rarely observed in transient X‐ray binaries.

Abstract

We present preliminary results from the analysis of simultaneous multiwavelength observations of the black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127. The source is still continuing its outburst started in May 2005, never leaving the Low/Hard State. In the X-ray energy spectra we confirm evidence for a thermal component at a very low luminosity possibly extending close to but not at the innermost stable orbit. This is unusual for black hole candidates in the Low/Hard State. Abstract

We use both time-domain and Fourier techniques to study the correlated optical and X-rays variability in the black hole X-ray nova XTE J1118+480. Its X-ray timing properties, such as the shape of the X-ray power spectrum and cross-correlation functions (CCFs) between X-ray energy bands, the slight decrease of RMS variability from 30 % in the 2-5.9 keV to 19 % in the 15.5--44.4 keV band, as well as the X-ray hardness/flux anti-correlation, are very similar to what is found in other black hole binaries in the hard state. The optical/X-ray CCF is virtually independent of the X-ray energies. The optical flux appears to be correlated not only with the X-ray flux but also with the X-ray spectral variability. Both the coherence function and the lags between optical and the X-rays are Fourier frequency dependent. The optical/X-ray coherence function reaches its maximum (~0.3) in the 0.1-1 Hz range and the time-lags decrease with frequency approximatively like f^-0.8. The correlation between X-ray and optical light curves appears to have time-scale-invariant properties. The X-ray/optical CCF maintains a similar but rescaled shape on time-scales ranging at least from 0.1 s to few 10 s. Using the event superposition method we show that the correlation is not triggered by a single type of event (dip or flare) in the light curves. Instead, optical and X-ray fluctuations of very different shapes, amplitudes and time-scales are correlated in a similar mode where the optical light curve is seemingly related to the time derivative of the X-rays., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

13. A Chandra observation of the old open cluster M67

Abstract

We present the results of a 47-ks Chandra-ACIS observation of the old open cluster M67. We detected 25 proper-motion cluster members (including ten new sources) and 12 sources (all new) that we suspect to be members from their locations close to the main sequence (1 < B-V < 1.7). Of the detected members, 23 are binaries. Among the new sources that are members and probable members are four spectroscopic binaries with P_orb < 12 d, two contact binaries and two periodic photometric variables with P_ph < 8.4 d. Their X-rays are likely the result of coronal activity enhanced by tidally locked rapid rotation. The X-rays of the new source S997, a blue straggler in a wide eccentric orbit, are puzzling. Spectral fits show that the X-rays of the brightest sources S1063 (a binary with a sub-subgiant), S1082 (a triple blue straggler with a close binary) and S1040 (a circular binary of a giant and a cool white dwarf), are consistent with coronal emission. We detected a new bright source that must have brightened at least about ten times since the time of the ROSAT observations. It is not clear whether its faint blue optical counterpart belongs to M67. We discuss the possibility that this source is a low-mass X-ray binary in quiescence, which would be the first of its kind in an open cluster. Abstract

Black holes become visible when they accrete gas, a common source of which is a close stellar companion. The standard theory for this process (invoking a 'thin accretion disk') does not explain some spectacular phenomena associated with these systems, such as their X-ray variability and relativistic outflows, indicating some lack of understanding of the actual physical conditions. Simultaneous observations at multiple wavelengths can provide strong constraints on these conditions. Here we report simultaneous high-time-resolution X-ray and optical observations of the transient source XTE J1118+480, which show a strong but puzzling correlation between the emissions. The optical emission rises suddenly following an increase in the X-ray output, but with a dip 2-5 seconds in advance of the X-rays. This result is not easy to understand within the simplest model of the optical emission, where the light comes from reprocessed X-rays. It is probably more consistent with an earlier suggestion that the optical light is cyclosynchrotron emission that originates in a region about 20,000 km from the black hole. Data from observations with the ROSAT X-ray telescope will routinely undergo a Standard Processing in the ROSAT Scientific Data Center (RSDC) at the Max-Planck Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE, Garching). As has been elaborated in a previous contribution the Standard Processing performs two major tasks: in a first step data are normalized and calibrated and then a Standard Image and Source Analysis is performed. The Principal Investigator of the observation will eventually receive the data and an analysis protocol containing the results of the Standard Analysis. Often a user may not be fully satisfied with the findings of the Standard Analysis and therefore wish to proceed with a more detailed data evaluation on his own. It is for this kind of investigation that we have developed the Extended Scientific Analysis System (EXSAS).

21. ROSAT observation of the HII region RCW 49 Possible discovery of a new Wolf-Rayet ring nebula

Abstract

We have observed the southern HII region RCW 49 with the ROSAT PSPC instrument. Part of the diffuse X-ray and optical emission present in this region might be associated with the X-ray selected WR star Th35-42 (WR20c). The young star cluster Westerlund 2 (which contains WR20a) is seen in X-rays as a centrally peaked, resolved source, surrounded by fainter diffuse emission.

Abstract

Quasi-simultaneous observations of H2215-086 (=FO Aqr), obtained with Exosat and IUE in 1983 and 1985 are reported. Secular variations in the X-ray flux and in the shape of the rotational light curve are observed. The modulation of the photoelectric absorption cutoff is studied by means of phase resolved X-ray spectra. A possible orbital modulation of the UV emission is also discussed.

Abstract

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract

High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultra-dense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m^2-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects in our galaxy and of the brightest supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT will achieve an effective area of ~12 m^2 (more than an order of magnitude larger than any spaceborne predecessor) in the 2-30 keV range (up to 50 keV in expanded mode), yet still fits a conventional platform and small/medium-class launcher. The high time resolution observations of the X-ray sky hold the key to a number of diagnostics of fundamental physics, some of which are unaccessible to other types of investigations, such as those based on imaging and spectroscopy. Revealing strong gravitational field effects, measuring the mass and spin of black holes and the equation of state of ultradense matter are among the goals of such observations. At present prospects for future, non-focused X-ray timing experiments following the exciting age of RXTE/PCA are uncertain. Technological limitations are unavoidably faced in the conception and development of experiments with effective area of several square meters, as needed in order to meet the scientific requirements. We are developing large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors offering high time and energy resolution at room temperature, which require modest resources and operation complexity (e.g., read-out) per unit area. Based on the properties of the detector and read-out electronics that we measured in the lab, we developed a realistic concept for a very large effective area mission devoted to X-ray timing in the 2-30 keV energy range. Abstract

We report high-energy results obtained with INTEGRAL and Rossi-XTE on two microquasars: the persistent high-mass system Cygnus X-1 and the transient low-mass binary SWIFT J1753.5-0127. INTEGRAL observed Cygnus X-1 from 2002 to 2004: the spectral (5-1000 keV) properties of the source, seen at least in three distinct spectral states, show disc and corona changes. In 2003 June, a high-energy tail at several hundred keV in excess of the thermal Comptonization model was observed, suggesting the presence of an additional non-thermal component. At that time, we detected an unusual correlation between radio data and high-energy hardness. We also report and compare the results obtained with simultaneous observations of the transient source SWIFT J1753.5-0127 performed with Rossi-XTE, INTEGRAL, VLA, REM and NTT on 2005 August 10-12 near its hard X-ray outburst. Broad-band spectra and fast time-variability properties are derived on this source (probably located in the galactic halo) together with radio, IR and optical data. We build a spectral energy distribution of the source and derive interesting multiwavelength constraints. Significantly detected up to 600 keV in a typical Low/Hard State, the transient does not seem to follow the usual radio/X-ray correlation., 5 figures, 2 in color

28. A shared accretion instability for black holes and neutron stars.

Abstract

Accretion disks around compact objects are expected to enter an unstable phase at high luminosity 1 . One instability may occur when the radiation pressure generated by accretion modifies the disk viscosity, resulting in the cyclic depletion and refilling of the inner disk on short timescales 2 . Such a scenario, however, has only been quantitatively verified for a single stellar-mass black hole 3-5 . Although there are hints of these cycles in a few isolated cases 6-10 , their apparent absence in the variable emission of most bright accreting neutron stars and black holes has been a continuing puzzle 11 . Here we report the presence of the same multiwavelength instability around an accreting neutron star. Moreover, we show that the variability across the electromagnetic spectrum-from radio to X-ray-of both black holes and neutron stars at high accretion rates can be explained consistently if the accretion disks are unstable, producing relativistic ejections during transitions that deplete or refill the inner disk. Such a new association allows us to identify the main physical components responsible for the fast multiwavelength variability of highly accreting compact objects., (© 2023. Abstract

Over the last few years, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has emerged as one of the most significant causes of chronic liver disease worldwide, with an estimated prevalence ranging from 2.2 to 3.0%. In Italy, approximately 2% of subjects are infected with HCV. Considering that acute HCV infection is usually asymptomatic, early diagnosis is rare. Those people who develop chronic infection, even though undiagnosed, may suffer serious liver damage, making chronic HCV infection a major health problem. New initiatives are needed to identify a submerged portion of patients with chronic viral hepatitis and to propose controls and antiviral treatments to avoid the progression to liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Since January 2011, the Infectious Diseases Department of San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan has been carrying out a prevention program called "EASY test project", using a new oral test, the OraQuick® HCV rapid antibody test (OraSure technologies, Inc.). The main objective of the project is to evaluate the acceptability of an alternative, free and anonymous HCV test offer, available in different settings (Points of Care, STDs Prevention clinics and General Practitioner clinics). From January 2011 to April 2014, 29,600 subjects were approached to inform them about HCV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases; 4,507 (15.2% of the contacted subjects) of them, total eligible volunteers, performed HCV tests on saliva and completed the interview in the alternative POCTs. Twenty-seven subjects (0.6% of the total) turned HCV oral test reactive (27/4.507) during the evaluation period; all of them were confirmed by conventional test. All 27 patients were asymptomatic and without a history of HCV-re- lated symptoms. The results from this analysis suggest that the promotion of alternative HCV test screening has not yet been fully developed as a strategy to increase levels of HCV testing among people at risk for HCV infection. Increasing awareness of these alternative tests among individuals at risk and providers may be an appropriate strategy to increase the number of people who know their serological status. The recent introduction of rapid oral HCV antibody test could completely change the HCV diagnosis approach by facilitating the possibility of testing millions of people worldwide (in particular in the developing countries).

Abstract

The submerged portion of undiagnosed HIV infection in Italy is about 30% of subjects found seropositive. This fact represents one of the most important public health problems hindering the control of infection progression. This means we need to fight unawareness and social stigma and promote easy and friendly access to HIV test. We developed a Prevention Program called “EASY test Project”, offering a new rapid HIV test on oral fluid, to evaluate the acceptability of an alternative, free and anonymous test available in different settings (on board a “Motor Home” at public events, Points of Care, STDs outpatient prevention units and GP surgeries). From December 2008 to December 2012 we performed 7,865 HIV saliva tests, with 50 new infections found (0.6% of the total) out of 140,000 informed subjects. From the self-reported characteristics of respondents, the population approaching the EAST test project was represented by males (70%) aged between 20 and 50 years, 61% with a medium-high education level, 62% homosexuals (MSM), 88% reported unsafe sexual behaviours, and 48% had never undergone an HIV screening test. In five years of the Prevention Program, 100% of subjects interviewed gave a general favorable consent in approaching rapid and not invasive screening, immediate return of the result, and a timely specialized approach and treatment of HIV positive subjects. Results from our study confirm that the rapid and alternative test may contribute to HIV prevention strategies and to the control of the spread of infection and HIV disease progression by reaching a larger population, particularly when and where regular screening procedures are difficult to obtain or are not preferred.

Abstract

We review the likely population, observational properties, and broad implications of stellar-mass black holes and ultraluminous x-ray sources. We focus on the clear empirical rules connecting accretion and outflow that have been established for stellar-mass black holes in binary systems in the past decade and a half. These patterns of behavior are probably the keys that will allow us to understand black hole feedback on the largest scales over cosmological time scales.

32. Correlated fast X-ray and optical variability in the black-hole candidate XTE J1118+480.

Abstract

Black holes become visible when they accrete gas, a common source of which is a close stellar companion. The standard theory for this process (invoking a 'thin accretion disk') does not explain some spectacular phenomena associated with these systems, such as their X-ray variability and relativistic outflows, indicating some lack of understanding of the actual physical conditions. Simultaneous observations at multiple wavelengths can provide strong constraints on these conditions. Here we report simultaneous high-time-resolution X-ray and optical observations of the transient source XTE J1118+480, which show a strong but puzzling correlation between the emissions. The optical emission rises suddenly following an increase in the X-ray output, but with a dip 2-5 seconds in advance of the X-rays. This result is not easy to understand within the simplest model of the optical emission, where the light comes from reprocessed X-rays. It is probably more consistent with an earlier suggestion that the optical light is cyclosynchrotron emission that originates in a region about 20,000 km from the black hole. We propose that the time dependence is evidence for a relatively slow (<0.1c), magnetically controlled outflow.

Abstract

We analyze the variability in the x-ray lightcurves of the black hole candidate Cygnus X-1 by linear and nonlinear time series analysis methods. While a linear model describes the overall second order properties of the observed data well, surrogate data analysis reveals a significant deviation from linearity. We discuss the relation between shot noise models usually applied to analyze these data and linear stochastic autoregressive models. We debate statistical and interpretational issues of surrogate data testing for the present context. Finally, we suggest a combination of tools from linear and nonlinear time series analysis methods as a procedure to test the predictions of astrophysical models on observed data.
