Abstract

After rapid approval and installation, the SND@LHC Collaboration was able to gather data successfully in 2022 and 2023. Neutrino interactions from νμs originating at the LHC IP1 were observed. Since muons constitute the major background for neutrino interactions, the muon flux entering the acceptance was also measured. To improve the rejection power of the detector and to increase the fiducial volume, a third Veto plane was recently installed. The energy resolution of the calorimeter system was measured in a test beam. This will help with the identification of νe interactions that can be used to probe charm production in the pseudo-rapidity range of SND@LHC (7.2 < η < 8.4). Events with three outgoing muons have been observed and are being studied. With no vertex in the target, these events are very likely from muon trident production in the rock before the detector. Events with a vertex in the detector could be from trident production, photon conversion, or positron annihilation. To enhance SND@LHC’s physics case, an upgrade is planned for HL-LHC that will increase the statistics and reduce the systematics. The installation of a magnet will allow the separation of νμ from ν¯μ

Abstract

Abstract Direct Dark Matter searches are nowadays one of the most fervid research topics with many experimental efforts devoted to the search for nuclear recoils induced by the scattering of Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs). Detectors able to reconstruct the direction of the nucleus recoiling against the scattering WIMP are opening a new frontier to possibly extend Dark Matter searches beyond the neutrino background. Exploiting directionality would also prove the galactic origin of Dark Matter with an unambiguous signal-to-background separation. Indeed, the angular distribution of recoiled nuclei is centered around the direction of the Cygnus constellation, while the background distribution is expected to be isotropic. Current directional experiments are based on gas TPC whose sensitivity is limited by the small achievable detector mass. In this paper we present the discovery potential of a directional experiment based on the use of a solid target made of newly developed nuclear emulsions and of optical read-out systems reaching unprecedented nanometric resolution.

6. Significance of Exercise‐Related Ventricular Arrhythmias in Patients With Brugada Syndrome

Abstract

Background Sinus tachycardia during exercise attenuates ST‐segment elevation in patients with Brugada syndrome, whereas ST‐segment augmentation after an exercise test is a high‐risk sign. Some patients have premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) related to exercise, but the significance of exercise‐related PVCs in patients with Brugada syndrome is still unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the significance of exercise‐related PVCs for predicting occurrence of ventricular fibrillation (VF) in patients with Brugada syndrome. Methods and Results The subjects were 307 patients with Brugada syndrome who performed a treadmill exercise test. We evaluated the occurrence of PVCs at rest, during exercise and at the peak of exercise, and during recovery after exercise (0–5 minutes). We followed the patients for 92±68 months and evaluated the occurrence of VF. PVCs occurred in 82 patients (27%) at the time of treadmill exercise test: PVCs appeared at rest in 14 patients (4%), during exercise in 60 patients (20%), immediately after exercise (0–1.5 minutes) in 28 patients (9%), early after exercise (1.5–3 minutes) in 18 patients (6%), and late after exercise (3–5 minutes) in 12 patients (4%). Thirty patients experienced VF during follow‐up. Multivariable analysis including symptoms, spontaneous type 1 ECG, and PVCs in the early recovery phase showed that these factors were independently associated with VF events during follow‐up. Conclusions PVCs early after an exercise test are associated with future occurrence of VF events. Rebound of vagal nerve activity at the early recovery phase would promote ST‐segment augmentation and PVCs in high‐risk patients with Brugada syndrome.

Abstract

The measurement of environmental neutrons is particularly important in the search for new physics, such as dark matter particles, because neutrons constitute an often-irreducible background source. The measurement of the neutron energy spectra in the sub-MeV scale is technically difficult because it requires a very good energy resolution and a very high $\gamma$-ray rejection power. In this study, we used a super-fine-grained nuclear emulsion, called Nano Imaging Tracker (NIT), as a neutron detector. The main target of neutrons is the hydrogen (proton) content of emulsion films. Through a topological analysis, proton recoils induced by neutron scattering can be detected as tracks with sub-micrometric accuracy. This method shows an extremely high $\gamma$-ray rejection power, at the level of $5 \times 10^7 ~ \gamma/\rm{cm}^2$, which is equivalent to 5 years accumulation of environmental $\gamma$-rays, and a very good energy and direction resolution even in the sub-MeV energy region. In order to carry out this measurement with sufficient statistics, we upgraded the automated scanning system to achieve a speed of 250 g/year/machine. We calibrated the detector performance of this system with 880 keV monochromatic neutrons: a very good agreement with the expectation was found for all the relevant kinematic variables. The application of the developed method to a sample exposed at the INFN Gran Sasso surface laboratory provided the first measurement of sub-MeV environmental neutrons with a flux of $(7.6 \pm 1.7) \times 10^{-3} \rm{cm}^{-2} \rm{s}^{-1}$ in the proton energy range between 0.25 and 1 MeV (corresponds to neutron energy range between 0.25 and 10 MeV), consistent with the prediction. Abstract

We have designed a fully automated optical microscope running at high-speed and achieving a very high spatial resolution. In order to overcome the resolution limit of optical microscopes, it exploits the localized surface plasmon resonance phenomenon. The customized setup using a polarization analyzer, based on liquid crystals, produces no vibrations and it is capable of probing isolated nanoparticles. We tested its performance with an automated readout using a fine-grained nuclear emulsion sample exposed to 60 keV carbon ion beam and, for the first time, successfully reconstructed the directional information from ultra-short tracks produced by such low-energetic ions using a solid-state tracking detector.

Abstract

To recognize sub-micron-range low-energy tracks recorded in a super-fine-grained nuclear emulsion (Nano Imaging Tracker), an elliptical fitting method was devised to analyze anisotropic images taken by an optical microscope. We report on this newly developed method using a discrete Fourier transform and second-order moment analysis of the brightness distribution. We succeeded in lowering the ellipticity threshold, thereby improving the selection efficiency and angular resolution. Notably, the success of detecting carbon 30 keV tracks is the first such achievement in the world, where the incident direction of carbon 30 keV ions was determined with an accuracy of 41$^\circ$ and an efficiency of $1.7 \pm 0.1\%$.

Abstract

Directional dark matter search experiments enable us to reveal the presence of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles . A promising detector for a directional measurement is a fine-grained nuclear emulsion consisting of fine crystals of silver bromide with 20 nm or 40 nm size. A critical task for the success of the experiment is to remove background tracks of electrons coming from stopping beta rays of 14C decays in the nuclear emulsion. An electron rejection power of at least 10−10 is needed in order to start a 10 kg experiment. We present a novel cryogenic approach to reject the electron background that makes use of the phonon effect in nuclear emulsion. For the proof of principle, we have been investigating the sensitivity of fine-grained nuclear emulsions as a function of temperature by exposing to gamma rays and ion beams with an ion implant system in the range of 77–300 K. Results of gamma ray exposure indicate that the electron rejection power is estimated to be better than 3 × 10 − 9 at 77 K. Results of ion exposure imply that fine-grained nuclear emulsion is sensitive to ions which are light and heavy and ion tracks' angle can be measured.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations in appearance mode, i.e., through the direct observation of the tau lepton in nu(tau)- charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two nu(tau) candidates with a tau decaying into hadrons were observed in a subsample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third nu(tau) candidate in the tau(-) -> mu(-) decay channel coming from the analysis of a subsample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 sigma level.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment is searching for νμ ν τ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. via the direct detection of \tau leptons in \nu -\tau charged-current interactions. The evidence of \nu -\mu \rightarrow \nu -\tau appearance has been previously reported with three \nu -\tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth \nu -\tau candidate event, with the \tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Abstract

Nuclear emulsion is a perfect choice for a detector for directional DM search because of its high density and excellent position accuracy. The minimal detectable track length of a recoil nucleus in emulsion is required to be at least 100 nm, making the resolution of conventional optical microscopes insufficient to resolve them. Here we report about the R&D on a super-resolution optical microscope to be used in future directional DM search experiments with nuclear emulsion as a detector media. The microscope will be fully automatic, will use novel image acquisition and analysis techniques, will achieve the spatial resolution of the order of few tens of nm and will be capable of reconstructing recoil tracks with the length of at least 100 nm with high angular resolution.

Abstract

Due to the economic cooperation of the six countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program (GMS Program), the improvement of transport linkages between GMS countries has become a priority, especially for the cross-border section. For effective transport, it is necessary to consider the quality of the route pavement. It heavily affects travel time and cost. Previously, there have been difficulties of adequate qualitative survey methods for classifying data like route quality. In this research, a machine vision method is introduced to classify the pavement quality of East-West Economic Corridor routes in Thailand, and alternative route which promotion is being considered. The methodology proposed classifying pavement quality using the provided images. Classification results indicate that all routes in Thailand's section contain more than 90% of pavement and there are still non-pavement parts, especially at the border area. However, the proposed method presents an interesting application using open data, in terms of condition or state of pavements and determination of maintenance needs, the real-time data is needed.

Abstract

We report the results of high-resolution transmission electron-micrograph (TEM) observation, electron diffraction, and neutron diffraction (ND) measurements, which are sensitive to oxygen-vacancies, for Ta-oxide-based oxygen-reduction electrocatalysts used for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Both TEM and ND results indicate that highly active tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) phase have an incommensurate long-period structure with oxygen vacancies in the oxides, forming three-dimensionally ordered region in the crystal. Such corrective oxygen-vacancies might be effective to create better electronic or surface structural features for oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract

In order to measure neutron flux and neutron energy distribution under high intensity gamma-ray background, we tried to reduce the efficiency for a gamma-ray with our original nuclear emulsion by falling in development temperature whereas keeping efficiency for a neutron. The emulsion was irradiated by neutron and gamma-ray, and developed with Developer for Opera Experiment at temperatures of 10, 15 and 20 oC. As a result, the efficiency for gamma was successfully reduced with keeping the efficiency for a neutron, but tiny fog increased with increasing developing time using Developer for Opera Experiment.

Abstract

This paper develops a new approach for fault detection and diagnosis utilising parameters collected from low-cost and accessible sensors. An electrical railway point machine within a railway junction is used as a case study. The paper shows that electrical active power collected from electrical current and electrical voltage sensors can be used for condition monitoring systems. The methodology proposed in this paper utilises Wavelet Transforms and Support Vector Machines. It was found that together these methods can detect and diagnose misalignment faults of electrical railway point machine to a high degree of accuracy. Furthermore, it was proved that the approach can provide an indication of the severity of the faults. This work was carried out in collaboration between the University of Birmingham and Central Japan Railway Company.

Abstract

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors. Abstract

In this study, we are doing R&D for directional dark matter search with nuclear emulsion. First of all, higher resolution nuclear emulsion with fine silver halide crystals was developed in the production facility of emulsion at Nagoya university, and we confirmed that it can detect the expected nuclear recoil tracks. The readout of submicron tracks was required the new technology. We developed the expansion technique, and could readout the signal by shape analysis with optical microscopy. The two dimensional angular resolution is 36 degrees at the original track length of range from 150nm to 200nm with optical microscopy. Finally we demonstrated by using recoiled nuclei induced by 14.8MeV neutron, and confirmed the technique.Moreover, we developed the X-ray microscope system with SPring-8 as final check with higher resolution of selected candidate tracks with optical microscopy. The angular resolution was improved from 31 degrees with optical microscopy to 17degrees with X-ray microscopy at the track length of range from 150nm to 250nm. Abstract

In this study, homogenized elastic–viscoplastic behavior of an ultra-fine plate-fin structure fabricated for compact heat exchangers is investigated. First, the homogenized behavior is numerically analyzed using a fully implicit mathematical homogenization scheme of periodic elastic–inelastic solids. A power-law creep relation is assumed to represent the viscoplasticity of base metals at high temperatures. The plate-fin structure is thus shown to exhibit significant anisotropy as well as noticeable compressibility in both the elastic and viscoplastic ranges of the homogenized behavior. Second, a non-linear rate-dependent macroscopic constitutive model is developed using the quadratic yield function proposed for anisotropic compressible plasticity. The resulting constitutive model is shown to be successful for simulating the anisotropy, compressibility, and rate dependency in the homogenized behavior in multi-axial stress states.

Abstract

In this study, we perform comparative two-scale and full-scale analyses of elastoplastic regular hexagonal honeycomb blocks subjected to in-plane flat-punch indentation. Zigzag and armchair types of cell arrangements are considered for the blocks; relatively thick cell walls are assumed to focus on the effect of cell wall yielding rather than cell wall deflection. For the two-scale analysis, the fully implicit homogenization scheme developed by Asada and Ohno [Asada, T., Ohno, N., 2007. Fully implicit formulation of elastoplastic homogenization problem for two-scale analysis. International Journal of Solids and Structures 44, 7261–7275] is rebuilt by introducing half unit cells to halve the analysis domains in unit cells. For the full-scale analysis, three cell sizes are considered. It is shown that the two-scale analysis provides no apparent dependence on the two types of cell arrangements because of their equivalence under in-plane loading, whereas the full-scale analysis reveals that the local deformation in honeycomb blocks is highly dependent on cell arrangement. Nevertheless, the two-scale analysis is found to be successful in predicting the indentation load-displacement relation and the macroscopic localization direction in honeycomb blocks.

Abstract

This paper is to document major research results from the authors’ recent experimental and numerical studies of spindle motor vibration of 0.85-in. hard disk drives (HDD). Experimental studies indicate that spindle vibration of 0.85-in. HDD is very sensitive to its supporting fixture design. A poorly designed fixture can lead to spurious modes that do not reflect true vibration characteristics of the HDD. Experimental measurements also indicate that vibration of 0.85-in. HDD primarily consists of base plate vibration as opposed to rocking motion of the spinning disk pack, also known as (0,1) unbalanced modes, which dominates vibration of 3.5-in. HDD. For the numerical studies, simulation results from a component modes synthesis agree very well with the experimental measurements. Moreover, the dominance of the base plate vibration observed in the experimental studies results from the fact that the lowest natural frequency of the base plate is significantly smaller than that of the spinning disk in 0.85-in. HDD. Finally, a parametric study is conducted to identify critical parameters that significantly affect the spindle vibration of 0.85-in. HDD. Results of the parametric study indicate that rigidity of the base plate and locations of the radial bearing are the most critical parameters.

The fully implicit incremental homogenization scheme developed by Asada and Ohno (2007) for elastoplastic periodic solids is applied to two-scale analysis of honeycomb blocks subjected to flat punch indentation. To this end, the scheme is rebuilt by introducing half unit cells based on the point-symmetric distributions of stress and strain in unit cells, so that analysis domains in unit cells are reduced by half. Then, by assuming the zigzag and armchair types of cell-arrangements, the two-scale analysis of honeycomb blocks is performed. The corresponding full-scale finite element analysis is also performed to reveal the cell-arrangement dependence of cell deformation in the honeycomb blocks. It is shown that the two-scale analysis is macroscopically successful in spite of microscopic limitations.

Abstract

One of the central challenges of nanoscience is fabrication of nanoscale structures with well-controlled architectures using planar thin-film technology. Herein, we report that ordered nanocheckerboards in ZnMnGaO4 films were grown epitaxially on single-crystal MgO substrates by utilizing a solid-state method of the phase separation-induced self-assembly. The films consist of two types of chemically distinct and regularly spaced nanorods with mutually coherent interfaces, approximately 4 x 4 x 750 nm3 in size and perfectly aligned along the film growth direction. Surprisingly, a significant in-plane strain, more than 2%, from the substrate is globally maintained over the entire film thickness of about 820 nm. The strain energy from Jahn-Teller distortions and the film-substrate lattice mismatch induce the coherent three-dimensional (3D) self-assembled nanostructure, relieving the volume strain energy while suppressing the formation of dislocations.

Abstract

In this study, using a virtual work equation, a micro-/macro-kinematic relation and a linearized constitutive relation, a boundary value problem is fully implicitly formulated to determine perturbed displacement increment fields in elastoplastic unit cells for two-scale analysis. It is shown that this implicit homogenization problem can be iteratively solved with quadratic convergences by successively updating strain increment fields in unit cells, and that the boundary value problem formulated provides a computational algorithm which is versatile for initial setting of strain increment fields. The computational algorithm developed is then examined by performing a two-scale analysis of a holed plate with an elastoplastic micro-structure, subjected to tensile loading. This demonstrates that the convergence in iteratively solving the implicit homogenization problem strongly depends on the initial setting of strain increment fields in unit cells.

Abstract

In this study, to determine incremental, perturbed displacement fields in periodic elastic-viscoplastic solids, an incremental homogenization problem is fully implicitly formulated using a linearized constitutive relation, a micro/macro-kinematic relation, and a stress balance equation. It is shown that the homogenization problem can be iteratively solved with quadratic convergences by successively updating strain increments in unit cells, and that the present formulation allows versatility in the initial setting of strain increments in contrast to Terada-Kikuchi (2001) and Miehe (2002). This homogenization algorithm is then examined by analyzing a holed plate, with an elastic-viscoplastic micro-structure, subjected to tensile loading. It is thus demonstrated that the convergence in iteratively solving the homogenization problem strongly depends on the initial setting of strain increments in unit cells, and that quick convergences can be attained if the initial setting of strain increments is appropriate.

Abstract

In (1-x)Pb(Zn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -xPbTiO 3 (PZN-xPT), there exists the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) as an almost temperature-independent boundary around x = 0.10. In order to understand an origin of the excellent piezoelectric response found near the MPB in PZN-xPT, the features of ferroelectric domain structures in the tetragonal side of the MPB have been examined mainly by transmission electron microscopy. The ferroelectric domain structure in x = 0.12 specimens prepared from single crystals as bulk samples was found to be the superposition of the tetragonal domain structure with the [001] polarization and the curved-boundary regions with the [100] or [010] one. On the other hand, the cooling from the paraelectric phase in thin specimens used for transmission-electron-microscopy observation resulted in two types of ferroelectric domain structures. We have investigated microstructures related to anomalous ferroelectric properties such as the magnetocapacitance effect in magnetic ferroelectric compounds YMn 1 − x Ti x O 3 and (Y,A)Mn 0.825 Ti 0.175 O 3 (A = La, Ca, Zr) mainly by the transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the size of the ferroelectric domains in YMn 1 − x Ti x O 3 depends strongly on the Ti concentration (x) and the size is estimated to be about 10–20 nm in the x = 0.175 compound. In addition, structural change from the ferroelectric P6 3 cm phase to the rhombohedral one was found in the x = 0.40 compound. On the other hand, characteristic diffuse scattering elongating along both the [001] and [110] direction was found in (Y,Zr)Mn 0.825 Ti 0.175 O 3 , which is similar to that found in the x = 0.175 compound. It is revealed that the partial substitution in YMnO 3 breaks the long-ranged FE ordering and structural fluctuation is induced, which should be responsible for the anomalous FE behaviors in these compounds.

Abstract

Analyses of nuclear emulsion detectors that can detect and identify charged particles or radiation as tracks have typically utilized optical microscope systems because the targets have lengths from several μm to more than 1000 μm. For recent new nuclear emulsion detectors that can detect tracks of submicron length or less, the current readout systems are insufficient due to their poor resolution. In this study, we developed a new system and method using an optical microscope system for rough candidate selection and the hard X-ray microscope system at SPring-8 for high-precision analysis with a resolution of better than 70 nm resolution. Furthermore, we demonstrated the analysis of submicron-length tracks with a matching efficiency of more than 99% and position accuracy of better than 5 μm. This system is now running semi-automatically.

Abstract

Recent developments of the nuclear emulsion technology led to the production of films with nanometric silver halide grains suitable to track low energy nuclear recoils with submicrometric length. This improvement opens the way to a directional Dark Matter detection, thus providing an innovative and complementary approach to the on-going WIMP searches. An important background source for these searches is represented by neutron-induced nuclear recoils that can mimic the WIMP signal. In this paper we provide an estimation of the contribution to this background from the intrinsic radioactive contamination of nuclear emulsions. We also report the induced background as a function of the read-out threshold, by using a GEANT4 simulation of the nuclear emulsion, showing that it amounts to about 0.06 neutrons per year per kilogram, fully compatible with the design of a 10 kg$\times$year exposure., Revised version

Abstract

Fine grained nuclear emulsion with several 10 nm silver halide crystals can detect submicron tracks. This detector is expected to be worked as dark matter detector with directional sensitive. Now, nuclear emulsion became possible to be produced at Nagoya University, and extreme fine grained nuclear emulsion with 20 nm diameter was produced. Using this emulsion and new reading out technique with expansion technique, for optical selection and X-ray microscopy, recoiled tracks induced by dark matter can be detected automatically. Then, readout efficiency is larger than 80% at 120 nm, and angular resolution for final confirmation with X-ray microscopy is 20°. In addition, we started to construct the R&D underground facility in Gran Sasso.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the ν μ → ν τ channel, via the detection of the τ-leptons created in charged current ν τ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first ν τ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional ν τ candidate has been observed. Abstract

This paper describes the integration of a three-phase current sensor and a zero-phase current sensor via a coaxial bar structure. A coaxial bar structure was therefore used, as it improves the accuracy due to the exclusive use of the zero current transformer (ZCT) and the current sensor. The ZCT’s high-sensitivity magnetic sensor is an MI element, while the current sensor employs a Hall-effect IC. As a result, a sensitivity ratio (the ratio of leakage to residual output) of over 8:1 is obtained for the ZCT, demonstrating the structure’s ability to isolate leakage current. Meanwhile, the linearity error of the three-phase current remains at ±7.9%, well under the ±10% specification. Thus it can be seen that this structure was many advantages, while its sole disadvantage with respect to the conventional ZCT is increased manufacturing cost.

In this study, to determine incremental, perturbed displacement fields in periodic inelastic solids, an incremental homogenization problem is fully implicitly formulated using a linearized constitutive relation, a micro/macro-kinematic relation, and a stress balance equation. It is shown that the homogenization problem can be iteratively solved with quadratic convergences by successively updating strain increments in unit cells, and that the present formulation allows versatility in the initial setting of strain increments in contrast to Terada-Kikuchi (2001) and Miehe (2002). This homogenization algorithm is then examined by analyzing a holed plate, with an elastic-plastic micro-structure, subjected to tensile loading. It is thus demonstrated that the convergence in iteratively solving the homogenization problem strongly depends on the initial setting of strain increments in unit cells, and that quick convergences can be attained if the initial setting of strain increments is appropriate.

Abstract

This paper describes a three–phase electric current sensor using a magneto–impedance (MI) sensor, which provides compact size and wide–range current sensing. The MI sensor is composed of a thin–film MI element and a bias coil. The MI sensors and electric current bars are placed in u–shaped cores to prevent an unwanted magnetic field from being generated by another phase current. To realize a high shielding performance and a compact size, a double shielding structure is employed. Two kinds of alternate bias are used in the system to implement a wide measurement range of 1:600. The sensor is intermittently driven by discrete sampling to realize a low power consumption of 20 mW. The influence of temperature on the MI sensor is alleviated by supplying an optimum carrier electric current. As a result, a temperature fluctuation ratio of less than ± 1.3% at -25 to 60°C was obtained.

Abstract

The crystallographic features of the simple perovskite oxides La 1 − x Sr x MnO 3 with 0⩽ x ⩽0.08, which are known to be correlated-electron insulators, have been examined by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. It was confirmed on the basis of the powder diffraction profiles obtained that the orthorhombic-to-monoclinic structural phase transition took place; for instance, at 500 K in the x =0.08 sample. The profiles also indicated that the structural transition accompanied the introduction of the Jahn–Teller distortion and the increase in both the orthorhombic distortion and the A-site-ion displacement. Based on the reciprocal lattices determined from electron diffraction patterns, further, it was found that these distortions and displacement never resulted in the change in the extinction rule of diffraction spots, and that the monoclinic distortion was actually involved in the low-temperature phase. That is, the structural phase transition can basically be regarded as a ferroelastic transition in terms of the lowering of the symmetry.

Abstract

Caspase 3 activation has been implicated in cell death following a number of neurodegenerative insults. To determine whether caspase genes can affect the susceptibility of cells to neurodegeneration, a transgenic mouse line was created, expressing human caspase 3 under control of its own promoter. The human gene was regulated by the murine homeostatic machinery and human procaspase 3 was expressed in the same tissues as mouse caspase 3. These novel transgenic mice appeared phenotypically and developmentally normal and survived in excess of 2 years. Behavioural assessment using the 5-choice serial reaction time task found no differences from wild-type littermates. Caspase activity was found to be tightly regulated under physiological conditions, however, significantly larger lesions were obtained when transgenic mice were subjected to focal cerebral ischaemia/reperfusion injury compared to wild-type littermates. These data demonstrate that mice overexpressing human caspase 3 are essentially normal, however, they have increased susceptibility to degenerative insults.

Abstract

The crystallographic features of the ferroelectric domain structures in (Sr1-xBax)Bi2Ta2O9 single crystals have been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The unique 90° domain structures were found in these single crystals. In SrBi2Ta2O9 with x = 0, particularly the majority domains with the ±[1 1 0]t polarization vectors in the tetragonal notation are divided by the minority ones with the vectors, which were observed as a curved-line contrast in dark field images.

Abstract

Crystallographic features of La 1− x Sr x MO 3 with M=Cr and Fe in the vicinity of the R 3 c/Pbnm phase boundary have been examined mainly at room temperature by transmission electron microscopy. When the Sr content x increases from x =0, the change in crystal structure from Pbnm to R 3 c was confirmed to occur at room temperature in La 1− x Sr x CrO 3 around x =0.2. In La 1− x Sr x FeO 3 , on the other hand, the incommensurate phase was found to exist between the Pbnm and the R 3 c phases. The analysis of the electron diffraction patterns obtained in the work indicated that the normal structure of the incommensurate structure and the direction of the modulation could, respectively, be identified as the Pbnm structure and one of the 〈3 2 3〉 directions. It was also suggested that the rotational displacement of the oxygen octahedra involved in the Pbnm structure should be modulated in the incommensurate structure.

Abstract

In this paper, we summarize a newly developed automatic readout system, composed of a microscope with an optics stage, to analyze charged particle tracks of less than 1 μm recorded in a fine-grained nuclear emulsion. This system's optics have the high spatial resolution, epi-illumination, and xenon-mercury lamp necessary to achieve sufficient contrast and brightness for small silver grains up to about 40 nm in diameter. Methods of shape recognition and focus point acquisition were developed that enabled the system to identify submicron tracks corresponding to nuclei on the order of 10–100 keV.

Abstract

Common mathematical theories can have profound applications in understanding real materials. The intrinsic connection between aperiodic orders observed in the Fibonacci sequence, Penrose tiling, and quasicrystals is a well-known example. Another example is the self-similarity in fractals and dendrites. From transmission electron microscopy experiments, we found that FexTaS2 crystals with x = 1/4 and 1/3 exhibit complicated antiphase and chiral domain structures related to ordering of intercalated Fe ions with 2a × 2a and √3a × √3a superstructures, respectively. These complex domain patterns are found to be deeply related with the four color theorem, stating that four colors are sufficient to identify the countries on a planar map with proper coloring and its variations for two-step proper coloring. Furthermore, the domain topology is closely relevant to their magnetic properties. Our discovery unveils the importance of understanding the global topology of domain configurations in functional materials.

Abstract

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode i.e. through the direct observation of the $\tau$ lepton in $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two $\nu_{\tau}$ candidates with a $\tau$ decaying into hadrons were observed in a sub-sample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third $\nu_\tau$ candidate in the $\tau^-\to\mu^-$ decay channel coming from the analysis of a sub-sample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 $\sigma$ level.
