Asteroseismic scaling relations can provide high-precision measurements of mass and radius for red giant (RG) stars displaying solar-like oscillations. Their accuracy can be validated and potentially improved using independent and accurate observations of mass, radius, effective temperature and metallicity. We seek to achieve this using long period SB2 eclipsing binaries hosting oscillating RGs. We explore KIC 8430105, for which a previous study found significant asteroseismic overestimation of mass and radius when compared with eclipsing binary measurements. We measured dynamical masses and radii for both components to be significantly lower than previously established, increasing the discrepancy between asteroseismic and dynamical measurements. Our dynamical measurements of the RG component were compared to corresponding measurements of mass and radius using asteroseismic scaling relations. Uncorrected scaling relations overestimated the mass of the RG by 26%, the radius by 11%, and the average density by 7%, in agreement with studies for other systems. However, using a theoretical correction to $\Delta \nu$, we managed to obtain an asteroseismic average density that is $1\sigma$ consistent with our dynamical result. We obtained several measurements of $\nu_{max}$ that are not fully consistent. With $\nu_{max} = 76.78 \pm 0.81\mu $Hz, the $\Delta \nu$ correction provided $2 \sigma$ consistent mass and radius for the giant. Eclipsing binary stars with an oscillating giant component allow accurate stellar parameters to be derived and asteroseismic methods to be tested and calibrated. To this aim, suitable systems need to be firstly identified and secondly measured precisely and accurately. KIC 4054905 is one such system, which has been identified, but with measurements of a relatively low precision and with some confusion regarding its parameters and evolutionary state. Our aim is to provide a detailed and precise characterisation of the system and to test asteroseismic scaling relations. Dynamical and asteroseismic parameters of KIC4054905 were determined from Kepler photometry and multi-epoch high-resolution spectra from FIES at the Nordic Optical Telescope. KIC 4054905 was found to belong to the thick disk and consist of two lower red giant branch (RGB) components with nearly identical masses of 0.95$M_{\odot}$ and an age of $9.9\pm0.6$ Gyr. The most evolved star displays solar-like oscillations, which suggest that the star belongs to the RGB, supported also by the radius, which is significantly smaller than the red clump phase for this mass and metallicity. Masses and radii from corrected asteroseismic scaling relations can be brought into full agreement with the dynamical values if the RGB phase is assumed, but a best scaling method could not be identified. We measured dynamical masses and radii with a precision better than 1.0%. We firmly establish the evolutionary nature of the system to be that of two early RGB stars with an age close to 10 Gyr, unlike previous findings. The metallicity and Galactic velocity suggest that the system belongs to the thick disk of the Milky Way. We investigate the agreement between dynamical and asteroseismic parameters for KIC 4054905. Models of stellar structure and evolution can be constrained using accurate measurements of the parameters of eclipsing binary members of open clusters. Multiple binary stars provide the means to tighten the constraints and, in turn, to improve the precision and accuracy of the age estimate of the host cluster. In the previous two papers of this series, we have demonstrated the use of measurements of multiple eclipsing binaries in the old open cluster NGC6791 to set tighter constraints on the properties of stellar models than was previously possible, thereby improving both the accuracy and precision of the cluster age. We identify and measure the properties of a non-eclipsing cluster member, V56, in NGC\,6791 and demonstrate how this provides additional model constraints that support and strengthen our previous findings. We analyse multi-epoch spectra of V56 from FLAMES in conjunction with the existing photometry and measurements of eclipsing binaries in NGC6971. The parameters of the V56 components are found to be $M_{\rm p}=1.103\pm 0.008 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm s}=0.974\pm 0.007 M_{\odot}$, $R_{\rm p}=1.764\pm0.099 R_{\odot}$ and $R_{\rm s}=1.045\pm0.057 R_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff,p}=5447\pm125$ K and $T_{\rm eff,s}=5552\pm125$ K, and surface [Fe/H]=$+0.29\pm0.06$ assuming that they have the same abundance. The derived properties strengthen our previous best estimate of the cluster age of $8.3\pm0.3$ Gyr and the mass of stars on the lower red giant branch (RGB), which is $M_{\rm RGB} = 1.15\pm0.02M_{\odot}$ for NGC6791. The accuracy of stellar masses and radii determined from asteroseismology is not known! We examine this issue for giant stars by comparing classical measurements of detached eclipsing binary systems (dEBs) with asteroseismic measurements from the Kepler mission. For star clusters, we extrapolate measurements of dEBs in the turn-off region to the red giant branch and the red clump where we investigate the giants as an ensemble. For the field stars, we measure dEBs with an oscillating giant component. These measurements allow a comparison of masses and radii calculated from a classical eclipsing binary analysis to those calculated from asteroseismic scaling relations and/or other asteroseismic methods. Our first results indicate small but significant systematic differences between the classical and asteroseismic measurements. In this contribution we show our latest results and summarize the current status and future plans. We also stress the importance of realizing that for giant stars mass cannot always be translated to age, since an unknown fraction of these evolved through a blue straggler phase with mass transfer in a binary system. Rough estimates of how many such stars to expect are given based on our findings in the open clusters NGC6819 and NGC6791.

Context. We present the first high-cadence multi-wavelength radial-velocity observations of the Sun-as-a-star, carried out during 57 consecutive days using the stellar \'echelle spectrograph at the Hertzsprung SONG Telescope operating at the Teide Observatory. Aims. The aim was to produce a high-quality data set and reference values for the global helioseismic parameters {\nu_{max}}, and {\Delta \nu} of the solar p-modes using the SONG instrument. The obtained data set or the inferred values should then be used when the scaling relations are applied to other stars showing solar-like oscillations which are observed with SONG or similar instruments. Methods. We used different approaches to analyse the power spectrum of the time series to determine {\nu_{max}}; simple Gaussian fitting and heavy smoothing of the power spectrum. {\Delta\nu} was determined using the method of autocorrelation of the power spectrum. The amplitude per radial mode was determined using the method described in Kjeldsen et al. (2008). Results. We found the following values for the solar oscillations using the SONG spectrograph: {\nu_{max}} = 3141 {\pm} 12 {\mu}Hz, {\Delta\nu} = 134.98 {\pm} 0.04 {\mu}Hz and an average amplitude of the strongest radial modes of 16.6 {\pm} 0.4 cm/s. The Stellar Observation Network Group (SONG) is an initiative to build a worldwide network of 1m telescopes with highprecision radial-velocity spectrographs. Here we analyse the first radial-velocity time series of a red-giant star measured by the SONG telescope at Tenerife. The asteroseismic results demonstrate a major increase in the achievable precision of the parameters for redgiant stars obtainable from ground-based observations. Reliable tests of the validity of these results are needed, however, before the accuracy of the parameters can be trusted. We analyse the first SONG time series for the star 46 LMi, which has a precise parallax and an angular diameter measured from interferometry, and therefore a good determination of the stellar radius. We use asteroseismic scaling relations to obtain an accurate mass, and modelling to determine the age. A 55-day time series of high-resolution, high S/N spectra were obtained with the first SONG telescope. We derive the asteroseismic parameters by analysing the power spectrum. To give a best guess on the large separation of modes in the power spectrum, we have applied a new method which uses the scaling of Kepler red-giant stars to 46 LMi. Several methods have been applied: classical estimates, seismic methods using the observed time series, and model calculations to derive the fundamental parameters of 46 LMi. Parameters determined using the different methods are consistent within the uncertainties. We find the following values for the mass M (scaling), radius R (classical), age (modelling), and surface gravity (combining mass and radius): M = 1.09 +- 0.04Msun, R = 7.95 +- 0.11 Rsun, age t = 8.2 +- 1.9Gy, and log g = 2.674 +- 0.013., 7 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Dipole mixed pulsation modes of consecutive radial order have been detected for thousands of low-mass red-giant stars with the NASA space telescope Kepler. Such modes have the potential to reveal information on the physics of the deep stellar interior. Different methods have been proposed to derive an observed value for the gravity-mode period spacing, the most prominent one relying on a relation derived from asymptotic pulsation theory applied to the gravity-mode character of the mixed modes. Our aim is to compare results based on this asymptotic relation with those derived from an empirical approach for three pulsating red-giant stars. We developed a data-driven method to perform frequency extraction and mode identification. Next, we used the identified dipole mixed modes to determine the gravity-mode period spacing by means of an empirical method and by means of the asymptotic relation. In our methodology, we consider the phase offset, $\epsilon_{\mathrm{g}}$, of the asymptotic relation as a free parameter. Using the frequencies of the identified dipole mixed modes for each star in the sample, we derived a value for the gravity-mode period spacing using the two different methods. These differ by less than 5%. The average precision we achieved for the period spacing derived from the asymptotic relation is better than 1%, while that of our data-driven approach is 3%. Good agreement is found between values for the period spacing derived from the asymptotic relation and from the empirical method. The chemical composition of stars hosting small exoplanets (with radii less than four Earth radii) appears to be more diverse than that of gas-giant hosts, which tend to be metal-rich. This implies that small, including Earth-size, planets may have readily formed at earlier epochs in the Universe's history when metals were more scarce. We report Kepler spacecraft observations of Kepler-444, a metal-poor Sun-like star from the old population of the Galactic thick disk and the host to a compact system of five transiting planets with sizes between those of Mercury and Venus. We validate this system as a true five-planet system orbiting the target star and provide a detailed characterization of its planetary and orbital parameters based on an analysis of the transit photometry. Kepler-444 is the densest star with detected solar-like oscillations. We use asteroseismology to directly measure a precise age of 11.2+/-1.0 Gyr for the host star, indicating that Kepler-444 formed when the Universe was less than 20% of its current age and making it the oldest known system of terrestrial-size planets. We thus show that Earth-size planets have formed throughout most of the Universe's 13.8-billion-year history, leaving open the possibility for the existence of ancient life in the Galaxy. The first discoveries of exoplanets around Sun-like stars have fueled efforts to find ever smaller worlds evocative of Earth and other terrestrial planets in the Solar System. While gas-giant planets appear to form preferentially around metal-rich stars, small planets (with radii less than four Earth radii) can form under a wide range of metallicities. This implies that small, including Earth-size, planets may have readily formed at earlier epochs in the Universe's history when metals were far less abundant. We report Kepler spacecraft observations of KOI-3158, a metal-poor Sun-like star from the old population of the Galactic thick disk, which hosts five planets with sizes between Mercury and Venus. We present spectroscopic and multicolour photometric evidence supporting the binary nature of the δ Scuti star XX Pyx (CD–24 7599). Applying a cross-correlation technique to the spectra, we find clear radial-velocity variations with a large amplitude. We derive the orbital parameters and confirm an orbital period of 1.15 d, as suggested previously on the basis of photometric variations. The amplitude of the slow variations present in our new multicolour data is wavelength independent, pointing also to a geometric effect as origin of the variability. They are thus fully consistent with the spectral variations and are interpreted as ellipsoidal variations. XX Pyx has a circular orbit of which the radial-velocity variations have a semi-amplitude of 17.8±0.4 km s-1. The single-lined binary nature of the star, together with the mass function, lead us to conclude that the orbital inclination must be larger than 10°. The orbital solution is compatible with a synchronized M3V companion. The deformation of the primary due to tidal forces is very probably the reason for the failure of detailed seismic modelling efforts done recently.

We report that the intermediate amplitude Scuti star V 1162 Ori has changed its main pulsational period in the course of the year 2000. This new period change falls in a sequence of period changes observed during the last 5 years. While the average amplitude value of all our new data, 63 mmag, ts a cyclic amplitude variation suggested by Arentoft et al. (2001), splitting the data up in smaller subsets discloses signicant deviations from regularity, with stretches of constant amplitude during short intervals of time. The new data show that the amplitude of one of the secondary frequencies, f2, has in 3 years dropped from more than 3 mmag to now about 1 mmag, and that the previously obtained f5 probably is a 1 d 1 alias of the real frequency. We analyse 147 h of single-site CCD time series photometry of the multiperiodic low-amplitude δ Scuti star XX Pyx with the aim of investigating variability at low frequencies. Part of the data were obtained in the context of the 1998 multisite campaign on XX Pyx, the results of which were described by Handler et al. We find that periodic low-frequency variations are present in the XX Pyx light curves, and we detect two frequencies at fA=0.8695 cycle d−1 and fB=1.7352 cycle d−1, respectively, with amplitudes of 4.5 and 5.4 mmag. The low-frequency variability is intrinsic to XX Pyx, and cannot be attributed to instrumental or atmospheric effects. The near 2:1 ratio of the frequencies leads us to suggest that XX Pyx is a δ Scuti star in a binary system, with a possible binary period of 27.6 h. This is strongly supported by the detection of radial velocity variations from the re-analysis of echelle spectra obtained by Handler et al. However, in the absence of a spectroscopic period, alternative explanations of the photometric variability involving pulsation are also possible; the variations occur close to possible combination frequencies of the short-period (δ Scuti) variations, but high Q values of 0.57 and 0.28 d suggest that the variations are not a result of normal (p-)modes. They could possibly be due to g-modes excited to observable amplitudes as a result of resonance effects. Surface features (spots) are unlikely to be the cause of the variations. We searched for combination frequencies ( fi−fj), f being the normal δ Scuti frequencies detected by Handler et al., but failed to detect any.

WOS: 000170215900028, We present the results of multisite observations of the delta Scuti star V1162 Ori. The observations were done in the period October 1999 - May 2000, when 18 telescopes at 15 observatories were used to collect 253 light extrema during a total of 290 hours of time-series observations. The purpose of the observations was to investigate amplitude and period variability previously observed in this star, and to search for low-amplitude frequencies. We detect, apart from the main frequency and its two first harmonics, four additional frequencies in the light curves, all with low amplitudes (1-3 mmag). Combining the present data set with data obtained in 1998-99 at ESO confirms the new frequencies and reveals the probable presence of yet another pulsational frequency. All five low-amplitude frequencies are statistically significant in the data, but at least one of them (f(5)) suffers from uncertainty due to aliasing. Using colour photometry we find evidence for a radial main frequency (f(1)), while most or all low-amplitude frequencies are likely non-radial. We show that the main frequency of V1162 Ori has variable amplitude and period/phase, the latter is also displayed in the O-C diagram from light extrema. The amplitude variability in our data is cyclic with a period of 282 d and a range of nearly 20 mmag, but earlier amplitude values quoted in the literature cannot be explained by this cyclic variation. O-C analysis including data from the literature show that the period of V1162 Ori displays a linear period change as well as sudden or cyclic variations on a time scale similar to that of the amplitude variations.

The spectroscopic binary CPD 592628 (Sp = O9.5 V) has been discovered to be a detached eclipsing binary, and we present an analysis based on new light curves, published spectroscopy and two new high-resolution spectra. uvby light curves from more than 2000 observations are analysed with the WINK and the Wilson{Devinney (WD) programs. Geometric distortions and photometric eects from the proximity of the components are included in the computations. The detached system has a close circular orbit of high inclination and high maximum projected velocities. We nd a photometric period P =1 : d 47 which is consistent with the spectroscopy{binary period by Solivella & Niemela (1999). We use this period to rematch the misidentied radial velocities from Levato et al. (1991) and apply them in an analysis using the method of Lehmann-Filhes. We nd that CPD 592628 is a young system close to the ZAMS. Its distance is 2:6 0:1 kpc and it has a systemic velocity of 19 km s 1 , conrming its membership in the cluster Trumpler 16 (radial velocity 23.5 km s 1 ). The temperatures are 32 000 K for the hotter star (A) and 30 000 K for the cooler (B). We determine the absolute dimensions (solar units): MA =1 4:0 2:0, RA =5 :29 0:26, MB =1 1:7 1: 8a ndRB =4 :38 0:22. By adopting E(b y )= 0:306, we get Mbol;A = 6:3 0:1, MV;A = 3:2 0:1, Mbol;B = 5:6 0: 1a ndMV;B = 2:7 0:1. Theoretical stellar models from Claret (1995), including convective{core overshooting and mass loss for a composition (X =0 :70, Z =0 :02), appear to t the components at an age of 2M yr.

The central field of NGC 7062 was observed intensively with the main goal of finding δ Scuti stars suitable for use in asteroseismological tests of stellar structure and evolution theory. BV time series photometry was obtained for this northern open cluster, which has a large population of stars inside the δ Scuti instability strip, making it a probable host of several such variables. We report findings of 15 pulsating stars, including at least 13 δ Scuti stars. Ten variables oscillate in two or more frequencies. Only one of these variables was known before, for which we detected 9 frequencies. Five probable variables are mentioned, and period analysis is given for all 20 stars.

Multi-channel CCD read-out, which is an option offered at most optical observatories, can significantly reduce the time spent on reading the detector. The penalty of using this option is the so-called amplifier cross-talk, which causes contamination across the output amplifiers, typically at the level of 1:10 000.This can be a serious problem for applications where high precision and/or high contrast is of importance. We represent an analysis of amplifier cross-talk for two instruments – FORS1 at the ESO VLT telescope Antu (Paranal) and DFOSC at the Danish 1.54 m telescope (La Silla) – and present a post-processing method for removing the imprint of cross-talk. It is found that cross-talk may significantly contaminate high-precision photometry in crowded fields, but it can be effectively eliminated during data reduction.

Space-based projects are providing a wealth of high-quality asteroseismic data, including frequencies for a large number of stars showing solar-like oscillations. These data open the prospect for precise determinations of key stellar parameters, of particular value to the study of extra-solar planetary systems. Given the quantity of the available and expected data it is important to develop efficient and reliable techniques for analyzing them, including the determination of stellar parameters from the observed frequencies. Here we present the SEEK package developed for the analysis of asteroseismic data from the Kepler mission. A central goal of the package is to obtain a fast and automatic determination of the stellar radius and other parameters, in a form that is statistically well-defined. The algorithms are tested by comparing the results of the analysis with independent measurements of stellar radius and mass, for a sample of well-observed stars. We combine results from interferometry, asteroseismology and spectroscopy to determine accurate fundamental parameters of 23 bright solar-type stars, from spectral type F5 to K2 and luminosity classes III to V. For some stars we can use direct techniques to determine the mass, radius, luminosity and effective temperature, and we compare with indirect methods that rely on photometric calibrations or spectroscopic analyses. We use the asteroseismic information available in the literature to infer an indirect mass with an accuracy of 4-15 percent. From indirect methods we determine luminosity and radius to 3 percent. For Teff we find a slight offset of -40+-20 K between the spectroscopic method and the direct method, meaning the spectroscopic temperatures are too high. From the spectroscopic analysis we determine the detailed chemical composition for 13 elements, including Li, C and O. We find no significant offset between the spectroscopic surface gravity and the value from combining asteroseismology with radius estimates. From the spectroscopy we also determine vsini and we present a new calibration of macro- and microturbulence. From the comparison between the results from the direct and spectroscopic methods we claim that we can determine Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] with absolute accuracies of 80 K, 0.08 dex, and 0.07 dex. The indirect methods are important to obtain reliable estimates of the fundamental parameters of relatively faint stars when interferometry cannot be used. Our study is the first to compare direct and indirect methods for a large sample of stars, and we conclude that indirect methods are valid, although slight corrections may be needed.

In addition to its great potential for characterizing extra-solar planetary systems the Kepler mission is providing unique data on stellar oscillations. A key aspect of Kepler asteroseismology is the application to solar-like oscillations of main-sequence stars. As an example we here consider an initial analysis of data for three stars in the Kepler field for which planetary transits were known from ground-based observations. For one of these, HAT-P-7, we obtain a detailed frequency spectrum and hence strong constraints on the stellar properties. The remaining two stars show definite evidence for solar-like oscillations, yielding a preliminary estimate of their mean densities., Comment: Astrophysical Journal Letters, in the press

We present preliminary asteroseismic results from Kepler on three G-type stars. The observations, made at one-minute cadence during the first 33.5d of science operations, reveal high signal-to-noise solar-like oscillation spectra in all three stars: About 20 modes of oscillation may be clearly distinguished in each star. We discuss the appearance of the oscillation spectra, use the frequencies and frequency separations to provide first results on the radii, masses and ages of the stars, and comment in the light of these results on prospects for inference on other solar-type stars that Kepler will observe., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; now accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Helioseismology has enabled us to better understand the solar interior, while also allowing us to better constrain solar models. But now is a tremendous epoch for asteroseismology as space missions dedicated to studying stellar oscillations have been launched within the last years (MOST and CoRoT). CoRoT has already proved valuable results for many types of stars, while Kepler, which was launched in March 2009, will provide us with a huge number of seismic data very soon. This is an opportunity to better constrain stellar models and to finally understand stellar structure and evolution. The goal of this research work is to estimate the global parameters of any solar-like oscillating target in an automatic manner. We want to determine the global parameters of the acoustic modes (large separation, range of excited pressure modes, maximum amplitude, and its corresponding frequency), retrieve the surface rotation period of the star and use these results to estimate the global parameters of the star (radius and mass).To prepare the analysis of hundreds of solar-like oscillating stars, we have developed a robust and automatic pipeline. The pipeline consists of data analysis techniques, such as Fast Fourier Transform, wavelets, autocorrelation, as well as the application of minimisation algorithms for stellar-modelling. We apply our pipeline to some simulated lightcurves from the asteroFLAG team and the Aarhus-asteroFLAG simulator, and obtain results that are consistent with the input data to the simulations. Our strategy gives correct results for stars with magnitudes below 11 with only a few 10% of bad determinations among the reliable results. We then apply the pipeline to the Sun and three CoRoT targets.In particular we determine the parameters of the Sun, HD49933, HD181906, and HD181420., 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Due to its unique long-term coverage and high photometric precision, observations from the Kepler asteroseismic investigation will provide us with the possibility to sound stellar cycles in a number of solar-type stars with asteroseismology. By comparing these measurements with conventional ground-based chromospheric activity measurements we might be able to increase our understanding of the relation between the chromospheric changes and the changes in the eigenmodes. In parallel with the Kepler observations we have therefore started a programme at the Nordic Optical Telescope to observe and monitor chromospheric activity in the stars that are most likely to be selected for observations for the whole satellite mission. The ground-based observations presented here can be used both to guide the selection of the special Kepler targets and as the first step in a monitoring programme for stellar cycles. Also, the chromospheric activity measurements obtained from the ground-based observations can be compared with stellar parameters such as ages and rotation in order to improve stellar evolution models., submitted to the proceedings of the IAU symposium No. 264, 2009

The long-term monitoring and high photometric precision of the Kepler satellite will provide a unique opportunity to sound the stellar cycles of many solar-type stars using asteroseismology. This can be achieved by studying periodic changes in the amplitudes and frequencies of the oscillation modes observed in these stars. By comparing these measurements with conventional ground-based chromospheric activity indices, we can improve our understanding of the relationship between chromospheric changes and those taking place deep in the interior throughout the stellar activity cycle. In addition, asteroseismic measurements of the convection zone depth and differential rotation may help us determine whether stellar cycles are driven at the top or at the base of the convection zone. In this paper, we analyze the precision that will be possible using Kepler to measure stellar cycles, convection zone depths, and differential rotation. Based on this analysis, we describe a strategy for selecting specific targets to be observed by the Kepler Asteroseismic Investigation for the full length of the mission, to optimize their suitability for probing stellar cycles in a wide variety of solar-type stars., accepted for publication in MNRAS

For distant stars, as observed by the NASA Kepler satellite, parallax information is currently of fairly low quality and is not complete. This limits the precision with which the absolute sizes of the stars and their potential transiting planets can be determined by traditional methods. Asteroseismology will be used to aid the radius determination of stars observed during NASA's Kepler mission. We report on the recent asteroFLAG hare-and-hounds Exercise#2, where a group of `hares' simulated data of F-K main-sequence stars that a group of `hounds' sought to analyze, aimed at determining the stellar radii. Based on the asteroseismic large frequency spacing, obtained from simulations of 4-year time series data from the Kepler mission, we demonstrate that the stellar radii can be correctly and precisely determined, when combined with traditional stellar parameters from the Kepler Input Catalogue. The radii found by the various methods used by each independent hound generally agree with the true values of the artificial stars to within 3%, when the large frequency spacing is used. This is 5--10 times better than the results where seismology is not applied. These results give strong confidence that radius estimation can be performed to better than 3% for solar-like stars using automatic pipeline reduction. The number of main-sequence stars for which we can observe solar-like oscillations is expected to increase considerably with the short-cadence high-precision photometric observations from the NASA Kepler satellite. Because of this increase in number of stars, automated tools are needed to analyse these data in a reasonable amount of time. In the framework of the asteroFLAG consortium, we present an automated pipeline which extracts frequencies and other parameters of solar-like oscillations in main-sequence and subgiant stars. The pipeline uses only the timeseries data as input and does not require any other input information. Tests on 353 artificial stars reveal that we can obtain accurate frequencies and oscillation parameters for about three quarters of the stars. We conclude that our methods are well suited for the analysis of main-sequence stars, which show mainly p-mode oscillations., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

We report on initial results from the first phase of Exercise 1 of the asteroFLAG hare and hounds. The asteroFLAG group is helping to prepare for the asteroseismology component of NASA's Kepler mission, and the first phase of Exercise 1 is concerned with testing extraction of estimates of the large and small frequency spacings of the low-degree p modes from Kepler-like artificial data. Stellar Oscillations Network Group (SONG) is an initiative aimed at designing and building a network of 1m-class telescopes dedicated to asteroseismology and planet hunting. SONG will have 8 identical telescope nodes each equipped with a high-resolution spectrograph and an iodine cell for obtaining precision radial velocities and a CCD camera for guiding and imaging purposes. We report on an ambitious multi-site campaign aimed at detecting stellar variability, particularly solar-like oscillations, in the red giant stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). During the six-week observing run, which comprised 164 telescope nights, we used nine 0.6-m to 2.1-m class telescopes located around the world to obtain uninterrupted time-series photometry. We outline here the data acquisition and reduction, with emphasis on the optimisation of the signal-to-noise of the low amplitude (50-500 micromag) solar-like oscillations. This includes a new and efficient method for obtaining the linearity profile of the CCD response at ultra high precision (~10 parts per million). The noise in the final time series is 0.50 mmag per minute integration for the best site, while the noise in the Fourier spectrum of all sites combined is 20 micromag. We discuss the observational history of the Wolf-Rayet object WR 46 (WN3p), including a re-investigation of the original discovery plates from early this century. We find that the reported presence of $\ion{N}{iii}$ lines is a mis-interpretation of $\ion{N}{v}$ lines and conclude that the object did not change its spectral type since the first recording one century ago. We performed photometric monitoring in the period 1986–1999, and confirm that the object shows cyclical variability on a time scale of hours. The shape of the light curves varies from purely sinusoidal to irregular, and from an amplitude of nearly 0$\fm$1 to constancy. In addition, night-to-night variability of the mean brightness causes folded light curves to display a large scatter. We investigate the frequency behaviour of the photometric data. From the periodograms of our two large data sets, in 1989 and in 1991, we identify frequencies of significantly different values 7.08 cd -1 and 7.34 cd -1 , respectively. Moreover, the 1989 data show strong evidence for an additional frequency $f_{\rm x}= 4.34$ cd -1 . The periodograms of our eight smaller data sets show more ambiguous behaviour. We discuss whether these latter data show evidence for multi-frequency behaviour, or whether they can be reconciled with a single clock with a changing clock-rate. As pointed out by van Genderen et al. (1991), if the data are folded using twice the single-wave period, the light curves appear ellipsoidal with unequal minima. Although the difference in depth of the minima is hardly significant, it does occur in both large data sets. Moreover, the simultaneously obtained radial velocity measurements are in better agreement with the double-wave than the single-wave period (Paper II). Finally, Marchenko et al. (2000) observed WR 46 to have a single-wave period of the same order as the double-wave period identified here. The periodograms of the ( V – W ) colour index show that the colour changes are controlled by single-wave frequencies, or their sub-harmonics (double-wave periods), but not by f x . The colour variation of WR 46 is peculiar in the sense that the object is red when bright and blue when faint. Although the spectrum of WR 46 has been suggested to originate from a stellar disc, this peculiar colour behaviour is in line with its WR nature, which is also confirmed by its spectral variability (Marchenko et al. 2000; Paper II). In addition, our seasonal photometric averages of WR 46 show a rise from 1989 to 1991 of 0$\fm$12, confirming the brightening detected by the Hipparcos -satellite (Marchenko et al. 1998). Eventually, WR 46 brightened by about 0$\fm$25 and subsequently declined on a time scale of years. Such a rise is unique among the WR stars in the Hipparcos -survey, and has not been found anywhere else. We investigate the changes to the double-wave behaviour and mean colour-index coinciding with the period change and brightening. Interpretation of the object as either a multi-frequency non-radial WR pulsator, or a WR binary with possible large orbital decay is deferred to Paper III.

We present a novel method for estimating lower-limit surface gravities log g of Kepler targets whose data do not allow the detection of solar-like oscillations. The method is tested using an ensemble of solar-type stars observed in the context of the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium. We then proceed to estimate lower-limit log g for a cohort of Kepler solar-type planet-candidate host stars with no detected oscillations. Limits on fundamental stellar properties, as provided by this work, are likely to be useful in the characterization of the corresponding candidate planetary systems. We report multisite observations devoted to the main-sequence δ Scuti star XX Pyx, conducted as the 17th run of the Delta Scuti Network. Over 125 nights a total of 550 h of usable time-series photometric B- and V-filter data were acquired involving both photoelectric and CCD measurements at eight observatories spread around the world, which represents the most extensive single time-series for any pulsating star other than the Sun obtained so far. We describe our observations and reduction methods, and present the frequency analysis of our new data. First, we detect six new pulsation and five new combination frequencies in the star's light curves. We also discover evidence for amplitude and/or frequency variations of some of the modes during the observations. These can occur on time-scales as short as 20 d and show quite diverse behaviour. To take them into account in the frequency analysis, a so-called non-linear frequency analysis method was developed, allowing us to quantify the temporal variability of the modes and to compensate for it. Following that we continue the frequency search and we also incorporate published multisite observations. In this way, we reveal three more pulsation and two more combination frequencies. In the end, we report a total of 30 significant frequencies - 22 of which correspond to independent pulsation modes. This is the largest number of independent modes ever detected in the light curves of a δ Scuti star. The frequencies of the modes show preferred separations as already suggested by previous work on this star; they are also arranged in clear patterns. These results lead to a refinement of the stellar mean density …(ṗ =ˆ 0.241 ± 0:008 ṗ ̛)† and to a new constraint on the rotation rate of XX Pyx …vrot = 1.1 ± 0.3d-ˡ: However, our attempts to identify the modes by pattern recognition failed. Moreover, mode identification from multicolour photometry failed as well because the high pulsation frequencies make this method unfavourable. The diverse behaviour of the amplitude and frequency variations of some of the modes leaves resonances as the only presently known possibility for their explanation.

New uvby photoelectric photometry has been acquired for the triple star DG Leo at two different observatories equipped with analogous instrumentation. A preliminary period analysis indicates the presence of at least 3 close δ Scuti frequencies (10-12 c/d, 3-6 mmag) and a slow variation. This slow variation fits quite well with half the orbital period of the spectroscopic binary; the noise level in the amplitude spectrum is only 3–4 mmag (after prewhitening).

We present the first results from multi-site observations of the δ Scuti star XX Pyx (CD–24°7599). The observations were carried out as the 17th run of the Delta Scuti Network. We collected 583 hr of B, V time-series photometry, resulting in a detection level (4σ) in the amplitude spectrum of 0.5 mmag. We detect 6 new pulsation frequencies, bringing the total number of frequencies known in this star up 19.

We summarize our ground-based program of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the asteroseismic targets of the Kepler space telescope. We have already determined atmospheric parameters, projected velocity of rotation, and radial velocity of 62 Kepler asteroseismic targets and 33 other stars in the Kepler field of view. We discovered six single-lined and two double-lined spectroscopic binaries, we determined the interstellar reddening for 29 stars in the Kepler field of view, and discovered three delta Sct, two gamma Dor and 14 other variable stars in the field of NGC 6866., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.
