The 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami inundated the Joban coastal area in the Odaka region of the city of Minamisoma, up to 2818 m from the shoreline. In this study, the flow characteristics of the tsunami were reconstructed from deposits using the DNN (deep neural network) inverse model, suggesting that the tsunami inundation occurred in the Froude supercritical condition. The DNN inverse model effectively estimated the tsunami flow parameters in the Odaka region, including the maximum inundation distance, flow velocity, maximum flow depth, and sediment concentration. Despite having a few topographical anthropogenic undulations that caused the inundation height to fluctuate greatly, the reconstructed maximum flow depth and flow velocity were reasonable and close to the values reported in the field observations. The reconstructed data around the Odaka region were characterized by an extremely high velocity (12.1 m s−1). This study suggests that the large fluctuation in flow depths on the Joban Coast compared with the stable flow depths in the Sendai Plain can be explained by the inundation in the supercritical flow condition.

Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

Alpha particles are considered the building blocks for some nuclei in alpha-clustering. Here the authors discuss quantum many-body simulations with nucleon-nucleon interaction to characterize the Hoyle state, the first excited 0+ state of the 12C nucleus, and find complexity in its alpha-clustering.

The Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) was launched on May 24, 2014, and it is operating very well in space more than 4.5 years. The designed mission life is five years as nominal operational phase and the target is over seven years since launch the satellite. The mission objectives of ALOS-2 are 1) disaster monitoring, 2) national land and infrastructure information, 3) cultivated area monitoring, and 4) global forest monitoring. To achieve the objectives, ALOS-2 carries on the Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (PALSAR-2), which is an active microwave radar using the 1.2 GHz frequency band and observes in day and night times even in bad weather conditions as successor PALSAR instrument onboard ALOS satellite operated from 2006 to 2011. PALSAR-2 instrument has several enhanced features from PALSAR e.g. finer spatial resolution, spotlight observing mode, dual-polarisation ScanSAR. This paper summarises an introduction of typical data analysis results for monitoring natural disasters by ALOS-2 during the operational phase. As the response natural disasters, more than 400 times of the emergency observations have been conducted to identify damages caused by volcanic activities, earthquakes, flooding etc. happened in Japan and the World.

Introduction: Strangulation of the genitalia by a metallic device is a rare occurrence. However, such cases present a challenge to any healthcare professional because of the difficulty associated with removing the device. Observation: Herein, we present the case of a patient with genital strangulation that was resolved quickly using a bolt cutter. Conclusion: Bolt cutters are useful for quickly removing metallic strangulation devices, even those made of thick metal. In this paper, we analyse the calving activity of the Bowdoin Glacier, north-western Greenland, in 2015 by combining satellite images, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) photogrammetry and ice flow modelling. In particular, a high-resolution displacement field is inferred from UAV orthoimages taken immediately before and after the initiation of a large fracture, which induced a major calving event. A detailed analysis of the strain rate field allows us to accurately map the path taken by the opening crack. Modelling results reveal (i) that the crack was more than half-thickness deep, filled with water and getting irreversibly deeper when it was captured by the UAV and (ii) that the crack initiated in an area of high horizontal shear caused by a local basal bump immediately behind the current calving front. The asymmetry of the bed at the front explains the systematic calving pattern observed in May and July–August 2015. As a corollary, we infer that the calving front of the Bowdoin Glacier is currently stabilized by this bedrock bump and might enter into an unstable mode and retreat rapidly if the glacier keeps thinning in the coming years. Beyond this outcome, our study demonstrates that the combination of UAV photogrammetry and ice flow modelling is a promising tool to horizontally and vertically track the propagation of fractures responsible for large calving events.

Surge-type glaciers repeat their short active phase and their much longer quiescent phase usually every several decades or longer, but detailed observations of the evolution cycles have been limited to only a few glaciers. Here we report three surging episodes in 1989, 2001, and 2013 at Donjek Glacier in the Yukon, Canada, indicating remarkably regular and short repeat cycles of 12 years. The surging area is limited within the ∼ 20 km section from the terminus, originating in an area where the flow width significantly narrows downstream, suggesting a strong control of the valley constriction on the surge dynamics.

Glacier surges often initiate in winter, but the mechanism remains unclear in contrast to the well-known summer speed-up at normal glaciers. To better understand the mechanism, we used radar images to examine spatial-temporal changes in the ice velocity of surge-type glaciers near the border of Alaska and the Yukon, focusing on their quiescent phase. We found significant accelerations in the upstream region from autumn to winter, regardless of surging episodes. Moreover, the winter speed-up propagated from upstream to downstream. Given the absence of surface meltwater input in winter, we suggest the presence of water storage near the base that does not directly connect to the surface, yet can promote basal sliding through increased water pressure. Our findings have implications for the modelling of glacial hydrology in winter, which may help us better understand glacier dynamics.

Stability of nanostructures of epoxy/acrylic triblock copolymer blends was studied.PMMA-b-PnBA-b-PMMA triblock copolymers (acrylic BCPs) having several compositions on the ratio of the block chains and the molecular weight were initially prepared and were blended with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy thermosets. The blends were cured using phenol novolac with tri phenyl phosphine (TPP) as the catalyst. Several nanostructures, such as spheres, cylinders, curved lamellae, were observed in the cured blends. The nanostructures were controlled by the molecular weight of the immiscible PnBA-block chain and the ratio of the PnBA in the blends. Moreover, the effect of the gel time to the nanostructures was examined by altering the trace amount of the TPP in the blends. The types of the nanostructures were almost kept irrespective of the gel time of the blends when the composition of the blends was maintained. This suggested the stability of the nanostructures of the epoxy/acrylic BCP blends made via the self-assembly mechanism, therefore a phase diagram of the cured blends was proposed.

We have found that a cerium palladium phosphide crystallizes into a C6Cr23-type structure with atomic disorder. Prepared polycrystalline samples show a homogeneity range in the ternary Ce–Pd–P phase diagram. The physical properties of the highest-quality sample of Ce2.4Pd20.7P5.9 were investigated by measuring the magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat. No pronounced phase transition was observed down to 0.5 K. The Kondo screening of localized 4f electrons in metallic Ce2.4Pd20.7P5.9 appears to be weaker than that in the isostructural compounds of Ce3Pd20Si6 and Ce3Pd20Ge6. By a comparative study of Ce2.4Pd20.7P5.9 and Ce3Pd20X6 (X = Si, Ge), the competition between the Kondo temperature and ordering temperatures including the quadrupolar ordering temperature is briefly discussed.

Events of localized electron density increase in the high-altitude (>3000 km) polar ionosphere are occasionally identified by the thermal plasma instruments on the Akebono satellite. In this paper, we investigate the vertical density structure in one of such events in detail using simultaneous observations by the Akebono and DMSP F15 satellites, the SuperDARN radars, and a network of ground Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, and the statistical characteristics of a large number (>10 000) of such events using Akebono data over half of an 11-year solar cycle. At Akebono altitude, the parallel drift velocity is remarkably low and the O+ ion composition ratio remarkably high, inside the high plasma-density regions at high altitude. Detailed comparisons between Akebono, DMSP ion velocity and density, and GPS total electron content (TEC) data suggest that the localized plasma density increase observed at high altitude on Akebono was likely connected with the polar tongue of ionization (TOI) and/or storm enhanced density (SED) plume observed in the F-region ionosphere. Together with the SuperDARN plasma convection map these data suggest that the TOI/SED plume penetrated into the polar cap due to anti-sunward convection and the plume existed in the same convection channel as the dense plasma at high altitude; in other words, the two were probably connected to each other by the convecting magnetic field lines. The observed features are consistent with the observed high-density plasma being transported from the mid-latitude ionosphere or plasmasphere and unlikely a part of the polar wind population.

The electron temperature (Te), electron density (Ne), and two components of the electric field were measured from the height of 90 km to 150 km by one of the sounding rockets launched during the SEEK-2 campaign. The rocket went through sporadic E layer (Es) at the height of 102 km–109 km during ascent and 99 km–108 km during decent, respectively. The energy density of thermal electrons calculated from Ne and Te shows the broad maximum in the height range of 100–110 km, and it decreases towards the lower and higher altitudes, which implies that a heat source exists in the height region of 100 km–110 km. A 3-D picture of Es, that was drawn by using Te, Ne, and the electric field data, corresponded to the computer simulation; the main structure of Es is projected to a higher altitude along the magnetic line of force, thus producing irregular structures of Te, Ne and electric field in higher altitude.

Electron temperature in the sporadic E layer was measured with a glass-sealed Langmuir probe at a mid-latitude station in Japan in the framework of the SEEK (Sporadic E Experiment over Kyushu)-2 campaign which was conducted in August 2002. Important findings are two fold: (1) electron temperature and electron density vary in the opposite sense in the height range of 100–108 km, and electron temperature in the Es layer is lower than that of ambient plasma, (2) electron temperature in these height ranges is higher than the possible range of neutral temperature. These findings strongly suggest that the heat source that elevates electron temperature much higher than possible neutral temperature exists at around 100 km, and/or that the physical parameter values, which are used in the present theory to calculate electron temperature, are not proper.

LHR band emissions observed at mid-latitude were investigated using data from the EXOS-C (Ohzora) satellite. A typical feature of the LHR band emissions is a continuous banded structure without burst-like and cut-off features whose center frequency decreases as the satellite moves to higher latitudes. A statistical analysis of the occurrence characteristics of the phenomena showed that mid-latitude LHR emissions are distributed inside the plasmapause during magnetically quiet periods, and the poleward boundary of the emission region moves to lower latitudes as the magnetic activity increases. The altitude distribution of the waves suggests that the propagation in the LHR duct formed horizontally in the mid-latitude upper-ionosphere. The emission is closely related to the occurrence of ionospheric ELF hiss. It is also shown that LHR emissions are commonly observed in the slot region of the radiation belt, and they sometimes accompany the enhancement of the ionospheric electron temperature. The generation of the LHR band emissions is discussed based on the observed characteristics.

We present a comparison of the electron density and temperature behaviour in the ionosphere and plasmasphere measured by the Millstone Hill incoherent-scatter radar and the instruments on board of the EXOS-D satellite with numerical model calculations from a time-dependent mathematical model of the Earth's ionosphere and plasmasphere during the geomagnetically quiet and storm period on 20–30 January, 1993. We have evaluated the value of the additional heating rate that should be added to the normal photoelectron heating in the electron energy equation in the daytime plasmasphere region above 5000 km along the magnetic field line to explain the high electron temperature measured by the instruments on board of the EXOS-D satellite within the Millstone Hill magnetic field flux tube in the Northern Hemisphere. The additional heating brings the measured and modelled electron temperatures into agreement in the plasmasphere and into very large disagreement in the ionosphere if the classical electron heat flux along magnetic field line is used in the model. A new approach, based on a new effective electron thermal conductivity coefficient along the magnetic field line, is presented to model the electron temperature in the ionosphere and plasmasphere. This new approach leads to a heat flux which is less than that given by the classical Spitzer-Harm theory. The evaluated additional heating of electrons in the plasmasphere and the decrease of the thermal conductivity in the topside ionosphere and the greater part of the plasmasphere found for the first time here allow the model to accurately reproduce the electron temperatures observed by the instruments on board the EXOS-D satellite in the plasmasphere and the Millstone Hill incoherent-scatter radar in the ionosphere. The effects of the daytime additional plasmaspheric heating of electrons on the electron temperature and density are small at the F-region altitudes if the modified electron heat flux is used. The deviations from the Boltzmann distribution for the first five vibrational levels of N2(v) and O2(v) were calculated. The present study suggests that these deviations are not significant at the first vibrational levels of N2 and O2 and the second level of O2, and the calculated distributions of N2(v) and O2(v) are highly non-Boltzmann at vibrational levels v > 2. The resulting effect of N2(v > 0) and O2(v > 0) on NmF2 is the decrease of the calculated daytime NmF2 up to a factor of 1.5. The modelled electron temperature is very sensitive to the electron density, and this decrease in electron density results in the increase of the calculated daytime electron temperature up to about 580 K at the F2 peak altitude giving closer agreement between the measured and modelled electron temperatures. Both the daytime and night-time densities are not reproduced by the model without N2(v > 0) and O2(v > 0), and inclusion of vibrationally excited N2 and O2 brings the model and data into better agreement.Key words: Ionosphere (ionospheric disturbances; ionosphere-magnetosphere interactions; plasma temperature and density)

The flow induction process resulting from a dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator was experimentally investigated by a flow visualization method. This method enables a detailed examination of the flow induction process. The overall behavior as well as the detailed temporal and spatial behavior of the flow induction process was clarified. The induced flow originated from the vicinity of an exposed electrode edge, and similar to a wall jet, it smoothly spread over the surface until a vortex was generated at the tip of the wall jet. Even after the vortex disappeared, the wall jet continued to extend. This wall jet was classified into two distinct regions. The first region contained the wall jet extending from the electrode edge to the location where the vortex was generated. In this region, active momentum coupling occurred; therefore, the flow was actively induced. During active momentum transfer in the acceleration region, the periodic inflation of the wall jet thickness was synchronized with the decreasing phase of the applied high-voltage input, which suggested different mechanisms of momentum transfer during the increasing and decreasing phases of the high-voltage input. The second region was an extension of the first one and was formed through the inertia of the flow originating from the first region.

The objective of this study was to investigate the involvement of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system in the developing mandibular condylar cartilage and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Fetal mice at embryonic day (E) 13.0-18.5 were used for in situ hybridization studies using [35S]-labeled RNA probes for IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF-I receptor (-IR), and IGF binding proteins (-BPs). At E13.0, IGF-I and IGF-II mRNA were expressed in the mesenchyme around the mandibular bone, but IGF-IR mRNA was not expressed within the bone. At E14.0, IGF-I and IGF-II mRNA were expressed in the outer layer of the condylar anlage, and IGF-IR mRNA was first detected within the condylar anlage, suggesting that the presence of IGF-IR mRNA in an IGF-rich environment triggers the initial formation of the condylar cartilage. IGFBP-4 mRNA was expressed in the anlagen of the articular disc and lower joint cavity from E15.0 to 18.5. When the upper joint cavity was formed at E18.5, IGFBP-4 mRNA expression was reduced in the fibrous mesenchymal tissue facing the upper joint cavity. Enhanced IGFBP-2 mRNA expression was first recognized in the anlagen of both the articular disc and lower joint cavity at E16.0 and continued expression in these tissues as well as in the fibrous mesenchymal tissue facing the upper joint cavity was observed at E18.5. IGFBP-5 mRNA was continuously expressed in the outer layer of the perichondrium/fibrous cell layer in the developing mandibular condyle. These findings suggest that the IGF system is involved in the formation of the condylar cartilage as well as in the TMJ.

Vitamin A-transporting protein in chicken plasma was purified by column chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex and Sephadex G-100; the protein formed a complex of retinol-binding protein (RBP) with prealbumin (PA). The molecular weight of the 1:1 molar complex was estimated to be 76,000 by gel filtration, and the sedimentation coefficient (S20,W) was found to be 5.2 S. RBP and PA were dissociated from the purified complex by means of CM-Sephadex column chromatography. Purified RBP contained 1 mole of vitamin A bound per mole of RBP. The molecular weight of RBP was determined to be 20,000 by gel filtration on Sephadex G-75, 19,000 by SDS-disc gel electrophoresis, and 20,500 by sedimentation equilibrium analysis. The S20,W was calculated to be 2.0 S. The molecular weight of PA was determined to be 56,000 by gel filtration, 52,000 by sedimentation equilibrium analysis, and 13,000 by SDS-disc gel electrophoresis. The S20,W was calculated to be 3.9 S. From these findings it was concluded that PA consists of four subunits, each with a molecular weight of approximately 13,000. Peptide mapping experiments suggested that the subunits were identical. No carbohydrates were detected in either RBP or PA. Chicken RBP and PA were immunologically distinct from those of human and rat. It is well established that vitamin A is transported bound to a specific plasma protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP), in both man (1,2) and rat (3). Purified human and rat plasma RBP have a single binding site for one molecule of retinol, alpha mobility on disc gel electrophoresis, and a molecular weight of approximately 20,000. In both species, RBP forms a tight complex with plasma prealbumin (PA) and normally circulates as a 1:1 molar protein-protein complex with PA (1-5). Despite these similarities, no immunological cross-reactivity between human and rat RBP has been observed (3,6). The present study was undertaken to explore whether or not a similar transport system for vitamin A exists in the chicken, a nonmammalian vertebrate. During the course of this study, Mokady and Tal (7) reported the isolation of RBP from chicken plasma and some physicochemical properties, e.g., a molecular weight of about 19,000. On the other hand, Muto, Smith, and Goodman (6) had already observed that the molecular weight of vitamin A-containing protein in fresh chicken plasma is approximately 60,000-80,000, as determined by gel filtration. However, no convincing information is available regarding an entire system of vitamin A transport in chicken plasma. We now describe procedures for the isolation of the RBA-PA complex of chicken plasma and the dissociation into the component proteins, RBP and PA. We also describe in detail the physicochemical properties of the individual proteins. It is also clearly demonstrated that chicken RBP and PA are immunologically distinct and different from the respective proteins in man and rat. Moreover, purified chicken PA appears to be a tetramer of four identical subunits and is thus similar to human and rat PA.
