3. Relativistic Coulomb screening in pulsational pair instability supernovae

Abstract: Context. Pulsational pair-instabilitye supernovae (PPISNe) and pair instability supernovae (PISNe) are the result of a thermonuclear runaway in the presence of a background electron-positron pair plasma. As such, their evolution and resultant black hole (BH) masses could possibly be affected by screening corrections due to the electron pair plasma. Aims. Sensitivity of PISNe and PPISNe to relativistic weak screening has been explored. Methods. In this paper a weak screening model that includes effects from relativistic pair production has been developed and applied at temperatures approaching and exceeding the thresh old for pair production. This screening model replaces "classical" screening commonly used in astrophysics. Modifications to the weak screening electron Debye length are incorporated in a computationally tractable analytic form with. Results. In PPISNe the BH masses were found to increase somewhat at high temperatures, though this increase is small. The BH collapse is also found to occur at earlier times, and the pulsational morphology also changes. In addition to the resultant BH mass, the sensitivity to the screening model of the pulsational period, the pulse structure, the PPISN-to-PISN transition, and the shift in the BH mass gap has been analyzed. Abstract: The abundance of primordial lithium is derived from the observed spectroscopy of metal-poor stars in the galactic halo. However, the observationally inferred abundance remains at about a factor of three below the abundance predicted by standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The resolution of this dilemma can be either astrophysical (stars destroy lithium after BBN), nuclear (reactions destroy lithium during BBN), or cosmological, i.e. new physics beyond the standard BBN is responsible for destroying lithium. Here, we overview a variety of possible cosmological solutions, and their shortcomings. On the one hand, we examine the possibility of physical processes that modify the velocity distribution of particles from the usually assumed Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. A physical justification for this is an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of domains of primordial magnetic field strength as a means to reduce the primordial lithium abundance. Another possibility is that scattering with the mildly relativistic electrons in the background plasma alters the baryon distribution to one resembling a Fermi-Dirac distribution. We show that neither of these possibilities can adequately resolve the lithium problem. Abstract: We review the computation of and associated uncertainties in the current understanding of the relic neutrino background due to core-collapse supernovae, black hole formation and neutron star merger events. We consider the current status of uncertainties due to the nuclear equation of state (EoS), the progenitor masses, the source supernova neutrino spectrum, the cosmological star formation rate, the stellar initial mass function, neutrino oscillations, and neutrino self-interactions. We summarize the current viability of future neutrino detectors to distinguish the nuclear EoS and the temperature of supernova neutrinos via the detected relic supernova neutrino spectrum.

Abstract: EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract: A huge number of neutrinos emitted in core-collapse supernova explosions (ν process) play an important role in stellar nucleosynthesis of some rare nuclides. The study of the neutrino process can contribute to estimation of neutrino energy spectra and explosion mechanism. In the mass region heavier than iron, only three nuclides are known as the neutrino isotopes. If we can find other candidates for neutrino production, it helps to constrain precisely the neutrino energy spectra emitted from proto-neutron stars. A key input for the calculation of the neutrino process is destruction rates by photodisintegration reactions on excited nuclei at high temperature environments. We have proposed direct measurements of photon-induced reaction cross sections on nuclei excited by high power laser to simulate stellar environments.

8. Measurement of the isomer production ratio for the Cd112(n,γ)Cd113 reaction using neutron beams at J-PARC

Abstract: The astrophysical origin of a rare isotope $^{115}\mathrm{Sn}$ remains an open question. An isomer (${T}_{1/2}=14.1\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{y}$) in $^{113}\mathrm{Cd}$ is an $s$-process branching point from which a nucleosynthesis flow reaches $^{115}\mathrm{Sn}$. The $s$-process abundance of $^{115}\mathrm{Sn}$ depends on the isomer production ratio in the $^{112}\mathrm{Cd}(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{113}\mathrm{Cd}$ reaction. However, the ratio has not been measured in an energy region higher than the thermal energy. We have measured $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays following neutron capture reactions on $^{112}\mathrm{Cd}$ using two cluster high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in conjunction with a time-of-flight method at J-PARC. We have obtained the result that the relative $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray intensity ratio of the isomer is almost constant in an energy region of up to 5 keV. This result suggests that the $s$-process contribution to the solar abundance of $^{115}\mathrm{Sn}$ is minor. We have found that the ratio of a resonance at 737 eV is about 1.5 times higher than other ratios. This enhancement can be explained by a $p$-wave neutron capture. This result suggests measurements of decay $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays to isomers are effective to assign the spin and parity for neutron capture resonances.

Abstract: Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

11. Neutrino-induced reactions and neutrino scattering with nuclei in low and high neutrino energy

Abstract: We reviewed present status regarding theoretical approaches for neutrino-induced reactions and neutrino scattering. With a short introduction of relevant data, our recent calculations by distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) for quasielastic region are presented for MiniBooNE data. We also discussed that one step-process estimated by the DWBA is comparable to the two-step process, which has been usually used in the neutrino-nucleosynthesis. For much higher energy neutrino data, such as NOMAD data, elementary process approach was shown to be useful instead of using complicated nuclear models. But, in the low energy region, detailed nuclear structure model, such as QRPA and shell model, turn out to be inescapable to explain the reaction data.

Abstract: Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. Abstract: A neutron capture cross section for the 112Cd(n, γ)113Cdm reaction has been measured with neutrons provided from a nuclear reactor in order to study the astrophysical origin of a rare p-process isotope 115Sn, which may be produced by a nucleosynthesis flow through 113Cdm in the s-process. We have obtained the thermal neutron capture cross section of 0.028 ± 0.009 [b] and the resonance integral of 1.1 ± 0.3 [b] using a cadmium difference method. The cross section ratio of the isomer to the ground state has been calculated as a function of the incident neutron energy, E, by using a statistical model. The calculated ratios are almost constant over a wide range of E < 100 keV. We have evaluated the s-process contribution to the solar abundance of 115Sn using the classical steady-flow model with various astrophysical parameters. This calculated result has shown that the production through 113Cdm may give minor contribution to 115Sn.

Abstract: We have determined the isotopic abundance ratio of 7Li/6Li in the interstellar media (ISMs) along lines of sight to HD169454 and HD250290 using the High-Dispersion Spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope. We also observed ζ Oph for comparison with previous data. The observed abundance ratios were 7Li/6Li = 8.1+3.6 –1.8 and 6.3+3.0 –1.7 for HD169454 and HD250290, respectively. These values are in reasonable agreement with those observed previously in the solar neighborhood ISMs within ±2σ error bars and are also consistent with our measurement of 7Li/6Li = 7.1+2.9 –1.6 for a cloud along the line of sight to ζ Oph. This is good evidence for homogeneous mixing and instantaneous recycling of the gas component in the Galactic disk. We also discuss several source compositions of 7Li, Galactic cosmic-ray interactions, stellar nucleosynthesis, and big bang nucleosynthesis.

Abstract: We are conducting tests of optical and electronics components of JEM-EUSO at the Telescope Array site in Utah with a ground-based "EUSO-TA" detector. The tests will include an engineering validation of the detector, cross-calibration of EUSO-TA with the TA fluorescence detector and observations of air shower events. Also, the proximity of the TA?s Electron Light Source will allow for convenient use of this calibration device. In this paper, we report initial results obtained with the EUSO-TA telescope. Abstract: Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very importantastrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highestenergies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of thelongitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples. Abstract: In this paper we describe the main characteristics of the JEM-EUSO instrument. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) of the International Space Station (ISS) will observe Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) from space. It will detect UV-light of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) produced by UHECRs traversing the Earth?s atmosphere. For each event, the detector will determine the energy, arrival direction and the type of the primary particle. The advantage of a space-borne detector resides in the largefield of view, using a target volume of about 10 12 tons of atmosphere, far greater than what is achievable from ground. Another advantage is a nearly uniform sampling of the whole celestial sphere. The corresponding increase in statistics will help to clarify the origin and sources of UHECRs and characterize the environment traversed during their production and propagation. JEM-EUSO is a 1.1 ton refractor telescope using an optics of 2.5 m diameter Fresnel lenses to focus the UV-light from EAS on a focal surface composed of about 5000 multi-anode photomultipliers, for a total of 3x10^5 channels. A multi-layer parallel architecture handles front-end acquisition, selecting and storing valid triggers. Each processing level filters the events with increasingly complex algorithms using FPGAs and DSPs to reject spurious events and reduce thedata rate to a value compatible with downlink constraints. Abstract: The β-decay half-lives of 110 neutron-rich isotopes of the elements from _{37}Rb to _{50}Sn were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The 40 new half-lives follow robust systematics and highlight the persistence of shell effects. The new data have direct implications for r-process calculations and reinforce the notion that the second (A≈130) and the rare-earth-element (A≈160) abundance peaks may result from the freeze-out of an (n,γ)⇄(γ,n) equilibrium. In such an equilibrium, the new half-lives are important factors determining the abundance of rare-earth elements, and allow for a more reliable discussion of the r process universality. It is anticipated that universality may not extend to the elements Sn, Sb, I, and Cs, making the detection of these elements in metal-poor stars of the utmost importance to determine the exact conditions of individual r-process events.

Abstract: Maxwellian-averaged cross sections and astrophysical reaction rates were calculated for neutron capture, fission, (n,p), (n,α), and some threshold reactions based on a microscopic neutron cross section data library, the Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library Version 3.3 (JENDL-3.3). The calculation was made for temperatures (kT) from 1 keV to 1 MeV including the most important range in astrophysical nucleosynthesis. Results are presented in the tables and graphs. The Maxwellian-averaged neutron capture cross sections are compared with recommendations of other authors. Implications of the differences between the present data and previous ones to s-process nucleosynthesis are discussed.

Abstract: Analyzing the solar system abundances, we find two universal scaling relations concerning the p- and s-nuclei. These scalings indicate that the γ -process nucleosynthesis in supernova (SN) explosions is the most probable origin of the p-nuclei. In addition the scalings lead to new concepts: a universality of the γ -process and a new nuclear cosmochronometer. Calculations of the γ -process are carried out for typical core-collapse SN explosion models. These confirm the observed scalings.

Abstract: We present the abundance analyses for the neutron-capture elements, and discuss the observed abundance distributions in very metal-poor stars with excesses of r-process elements. As has been found by previous abundance studies, the star-to-star scatter in the abundances of neutron-capture elements are very large. The abundance patterns of the heavy neutron-capture elements (56 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 70) in seven objects with moderate to large excesses of the neutron-capture elements are similar to that of the solar system r-process component. These results strongly suggest that the heavy neutron-capture elements in these objects are primarily synthesized by the r-process. On the other hand, the abundance ratios of the light neutron-capture elements (38 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 46) exhibit a rather large dispersion. Our inspection of the correlation between Sr and Ba abundances in very metal-poor stars reveals that the dispersion of the Sr abundances clearly decreases with increasing Ba abundance. This results support previous suggestions that the light neutron-capture elements are likely to have been produced in different astrophysical sites from those associated with the production of the heavier ones. The Th/Eu abundance ratios (log(Th/Eu)) measured for the seven r-process-enhanced stars range from -0.10 to -0.59. Since these very metal-poor stars are believed to be formed in the early Galaxy, this result means that a small dispersion appears in the abundance ratios between Th and rare-earth elements, such as Eu, in very metal-poor stars. In order to apply the Th/Eu ratios to estimates of stellar ages, further understanding for the Th production by the r-process nucleosynthesis is required.

Abstract: We study the effects of the outer boundary conditions in neutrino-driven winds on r-process nucleosynthesis. We perform numerical simulations of hydrodynamics of neutrino-driven winds and nuclear reaction network calculations. As an outer boundary condition of hydrodynamic calculations, we set a pressure upon the outermost layer of the wind, which is approaching toward the shock wall. Varying the boundary pressure, we obtain various asymptotic thermal temperatures of expanding material in the neutrino-driven winds for resulting nucleosynthesis. We find that a slightly lower asymptotic temperature reduces the charged particle reaction rates and the resulting amount of seed elements and leads to a high neutron-to-seed ratio for a successful r-process abundance pattern, which is in reasonable agreement with the solar system r-process abundance pattern. As a result, the asymptotic temperature, slightly lower than those in previous studies of neutrino-driven winds, can lead to a successful r-process even for the typical proto-neutron star mass MNS ~ 1.4 M☉. We also explore the relation between the boundary condition and the neutron star mass, which is related to the progenitor mass, for a successful r-process.

Its instrument will watch the darkside of the earth and will detect UV photons emitted from the extensive air shower caused by an ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR above 1018 eV), or an extremely high energy cosmic ray (EHECR) particle (e.g. above about 1020 eV). Such a high-rigidity particle as the latter arrives almost in a straight line from its origin through the magnetic fields of our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to allow us to trace the source location by its arrival direction. This can open the door to new astronomy with charged particles. In its 5 years of operation including the tilted mode, Extreme Universe Space Observatory an Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) will detect at least 1000 events with E > 7 × 1019 eV with the Greisen–Zatsepin–Ku’zmin (GZK) suppression spectrum. It can determine the energy spectrum and source locations of GZK to super-GZK regions with a statistical accuracy of several percent. JEM-EUSO is planned to be deployed by H2 transfer vehicle (HTV) and will be attached to the Japanese Experiment Module/Exposure Facility (JEM/EF) of International Space Station. JAXA has selected JEM-EUSO as one of the mission candidates of the second phase utilization of JEM/EF for launch in the early-to-mid 2010 s.

Abstract: In order to investigate the effect of strain rate change during dynamic tests on the stress-strain curves, an analytical study using the maximum load condition and a simple constitutive equation, σ = Be n e m (e: true strain rate, B, n, m: constants), was carried out. Three kinds of typical loading pulse, i.e. a usual constant incident pulse, an acceleration pulse and a deceleration pulse, were chosen. When the incident pulse is assumed to be σ 1 = = σ 0 exp(βt), these pulses correspond, respectively, to the cases with β = 0, β > 0 and β < 0. From the analysis, an instability strain or a strain at maximum load point, e * , was derived to be e * = n/ [1+m(1- (β/ e)(1+p)}]. It was found that the instability strain increases with the increase of acceleration parameter, β, of loading pulses. To check this analytical result, a series of dynamic tensile tests for 0.45%C steel using SHPB apparatus was performed with the three types of loading pulse. A tapered striker tube was used for acceleration and deceleration dynamic tests. The experimental result agreed well with that predicted by the analysis.

Abstract: We discuss the primordial nucleosynthesis in lepton asymmetric Universe models. In order to better estimate the universal baryon-mass density parameter ωb, we try to remove the uncertainty from the theoretical prediction of primordial 7Li abundance. We propose a new method to determine the primordial 7Li by the use of isotopic abundance ratio 7Li/6Li in the interstellar medium which exhibits the minimum effects of the stellar processes.

Abstract: We developed a new hybrid photocatalyst for CO2 reduction, which is composed of a semiconductor and a metal complex. In the hybrid photocatalyst, ΔG between the position of conduction band minimum (ECBM) of the semiconductor and the CO2 reduction potential of the complex is an essential factor for realizing fast electron transfer from the conduction band of semiconductor to metal complex leading to high photocatalytic activity. On the basis of this concept, the hybrid photocatalyst InP/Ru-complex, which functions in aqueous media, was developed. The photoreduction of CO2 to formate using water as an electron donor and a proton source was successfully achieved as a Z-scheme system by functionally conjugating the InP/Ru-complex photocatalyst for CO2 reduction with a TiO2 photocatalyst for water oxidation. The conversion efficiency from solar energy to chemical energy was ca. 0.04%, which approaches that for photosynthesis in a plant. Because this system can be applied to many other inorganic semiconductors and metal-complex catalysts, the efficiency and reaction selectivity can be enhanced by optimization of the electron transfer process including the energy-band configurations, conjugation conformations, and catalyst structures. This electrical-bias-free reaction is a huge leap forward for future practical applications of artificial photosynthesis under solar irradiation to produce organic species.

36. Structure of 24Al for the stellar reaction rate of 23Mg(p,γ)24Al

Abstract: The nuclear levels of 24 Al were studied by the 24 Mg( 3 He,t) 24 Al reaction at 60 MeV. Several new states were identified including a level at 2.787 MeV just above the proton threshold in 24 Al, and considerable level shifts were observed for most levels around the threshold. The spin-parity assignments were also made for many states including the threshold states by the angular distribution measurement. This clarifies the spin-parity and the excitation energy of the critical levels assumed before for the stellar reaction rate calculation of 23 Mg(p,γ) 24 Al. A large increase of the reaction rate is predicted, based on the present experimental result, at the temperature region of T 9 = 0.2–0.8 which would be crucial for the break-out process of the NeNa cycle to the MgAl cycle. This result suggests that the onset temperature of 23 Mg(p,γ) 24 Al should be lowered roughly by 10%. Application of the ( 3 He,t) reaction at 60 MeV for spin assignment is also discussed.

Observation of the enhanced heavy elements in metal weak dwarfs is proposed to test the inhomogeneous model. The studies of radioactive nuclear reactions help predict the theoretical abundances more precisely.

Abstract: We study the effects of the outer boundary conditions in neutrino-driven winds on the r-process nucleosynthesis. Varying the boundary condition, we obtain various asymptotic thermal temperature of expanding material. As a result, we find that the slightly lower asymptotic temperature than those in the previous studies of the neutrino-driven winds can lead to a successful r-process even for the typical proto-neutron star mass MNS 1.4M⊙. We also discuss the relation between the boundary condition and neutron star mass, which is related to the progenitor mass, for the successful r-process

Abstract: We have obtained high-resolution, high quality spectra of 22 very metal-poor stars with Subaru/HDS, in order to carry out detailed abundance studies of their neutron-capture elements. We have detected Th in seven stars in our sample. The abundance pattern of the heavy neutron-capture elements (56 ≤ Z ≤ 69) of these stars is similar to the r-process component in the solar-system. However, the Th abundances relative to other neutron-capture elements show a non-negligible departure from the abundance pattern of the solar-system r-process component. The meaning of this result in the context of studies of the r-process and cosmocronology are discussed.

Abstract: Numerous recent observations strongly suggest that the expansion of the universe is now accelerating due to the effect of some unknown form of “dark energy” with negative pressure. The most physically plausible candidate for the dark energy is the quintessence scalar field, which tracks the evolution of the dominant energy component in the universe and acts like a cosmological constant only after the onset of the matter dominated epoch. A generic feature of such fields is the possibility of having a significant energy density throughout the thermal history of the universe, which can affect the cosmic expansion and physical processes in the early universe. These models can therefore be effectively constrained by using the well established theories of primordial nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in comparison to the latest observations. In the present work we analyze some popular forms for the quintessence field and show that primordial 4He and D abundances put one of the most stringent constraints on the field in the early universe while CMB anisotropies put constraints on its nature at later epochs. We find that the simplest quintessence models can be ruled out from current observations. We also deduce constraints on the epoch of matter creation at the end of quintessential inflation through the effects of gravitational waves on the CMB anisotropies.

Abstract: We determine primordial 7 Li abudance independently of a previous method based on the measurement of the Spite plateau by using isotopic abundance ratios of 7 Li/ 6 Li in the interstellar media. The inferred best fit constraints on the primordial 7 Li abundance is 7 Li/H≅ 2.5 × 10 −10 , and the conservative upper limit at the 95% confidence level turns out to be 7 Li/H −10 .

Abstract: We calculate the neutrino scattering and absorption on the hot and dense neutron‐star matter with hyperons under the strong magnetic field using perturbative approach. We find that the absorption cross‐sections show the remarkable angular dependence: its strength is reduced in the direction parallel to the magnetic field and enhanced in the opposite direction. This variation becomes about 2.2 % when the magnetic field is about 2×1017 G.

Abstract: Electron capture reactions on Ni and Co isotopes are investigated by shell model calculations in steller environments. The capture rates depend sensitively on the distribution of the Gamow‐Teller (GT) strength. The capture rates obtained by using GXPF1J Hamiltonian for fp‐shell are found to be consistent with the rates obtained from experimental GT strength in 58Ni and 60Ni. Capture rates in Co isotopes, where there were large discrepancies among previous calculations, are also investigated. Beta decays of the N = 126 isotones are studied by shell model calculations taking into account both the GT and first‐forbidden (FF) transitions. The FF transitions are found to be important to reduce the half‐lives by twice to several times of those by the GT contributions only. Implications of the short half‐lives of the waiting point nuclei on the r‐process nucleosynthesis are discussed for various astrophysical conditions.

Abstract: We analyze the production and freeze-out of the isomer {sup 180}Ta{sup m} in the {nu}-process. We consider the influence of a possible low-lying intermediate (J=5) state at 592 keV using a transition width estimated from the measured half-life. This more realistic width is much smaller than the previous estimate. We find that the 592-keV state leads only to a small reduction of the residual isomer population ratio from the previous result; that is, considering this better estimate for the transition width, the isomer population ratio changes from R=0.39 to R=0.38, whereas previously it was estimated that this transition could reduce the ratio to R=0.18. This finding strengthens the evidence that {sup 138}La and {sup 180}Ta are coproduced by neutrino nucleosynthesis with an electron neutrino temperature of kT{approx_equal}4 MeV.

Abstract: We have made a new time-dependent calculation of the supernova production ratio of the long-lived isomeric state of $^{180}$Ta. Such a time-dependent solution is crucial for understanding the production and survival of this isotope. We include the explicit linking between the isomer and all known excited states.We have also calculated the properties of possible links to a conjectured excited state that might decrease the final isomer residual ratio. We find that the explicit time evolution of the synthesis of $^{180}$Ta using the available nuclear data avoids the overproduction relative to $^{138}$La for a $\nu$-process neutrino temperature of 4 MeV., Comment: Published in Phys.
