1. The Solar System planets as testing ground for exoplanets: a contribution from the Ariel Consortium Working Group

Abstract: Several science Working Groups (WG) were formed in 2019 within the Ariel Mission Consortium to help prepare the RedBook (Tinetti et al. ESA/SCI(2020)1), defining the science cases, and to contribute to address three fundamental questions 1) what exoplanets are made of; 2) how they formed and 3) how they evolve. Among those WGs, “Synergies between Solar System planets and exoplanets” was set-up to foster collaboration between the scientific community working on Solar System Planets atmospheres and the new growing community of the Ariel Science Team. We show here an overview of on-going studies and future projects foreseen by WG members, mostly focused on using our Solar System planets as proxies to develop and test tools to support Ariel science cases

Abstract: General Circulation Models with interactive physical and chemistry processes are the state-of-the-art tools for an integrated view and understanding of the Martian atmosphere and climate system. The GEM-Mars model currently includes 16 tracers for chemical composition and applies a fully online, interactive calculation of the photo- and gas phase chemistry of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O). These species largely control the chemical composition of the neutral Mars atmosphere through their photolysis products and their subsequent interactions. Water vapor undergoes a complex cycle on Mars as it is transported and interacts with ice reservoirs both at the planet's surface and at water ice clouds, which in turn provide radiative feedbacks. In the photochemical cycles involving CO2 and H2O, the abundances of 5 species have been reported by previous investigations with significant spatio-temporal coverage: CO2, H2O, CO, O3 and H2O2. This paper presents the current status of the atmospheric chemistry simulations in GEM-Mars by comparing them to a selection of these observational datasets as well as to oxygen dayglow emission from O2(a1∆g). The results are consistent with previous model-data comparisons and illustrate that the water cycle and the photochemistry are well implemented in the model. In particular, the simulation of the key reservoir species H2O2 provides a good match to the available data. Model-data biases for ozone columns and oxygen airglow are related to the simulated water vapor vertical profile, as these species have important column contributions from vertical layers at the top of the hygropause.

Abstract: We pursued our ground-based seasonal monitoring of hydrogen peroxide on Mars using thermal imaging spectroscopy, with two observations of the planet near opposition, in May 2016 (solar longitude Ls = 148.5°, diameter = 17 arcsec) and July 2018 (Ls = 209°, diameter = 23 arcsec). Data were recorded in the 1232–1242 cm−1 range (8.1 μm) with the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) mounted at the 3 m Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) at the Mauna Kea Observatories. As in the case of our previous analyses, maps of H2O2 were obtained using line depth ratios of weak transitions of H2O2 divided by a weak CO2 line. The H2O2 map of April 2016 shows a strong dichotomy between the northern and southern hemispheres, with a mean volume mixing ratio of 45 ppbv on the north side and less than 10 ppbv on the south side; this dichotomy was expected by the photochemical models developed in the LMD Mars Global Climate Model (LMD-MGCM) and with the recently developed Global Environmental Multiscale (GEM) model. The second measurement (July 2018) was taken in the middle of the MY 34 global dust storm. H2O2 was not detected with a disk-integrated 2σ upper limit of 10 ppbv, while both the LMD-MGCM and the LEM models predicted a value above 20 ppbv (also observed by TEXES in 2003) in the absence of dust storm. This depletion is probably the result of the high dust content in the atmosphere at the time of our observations, which led to a decrease in the water vapor column density, as observed by the PFS during the global dust storm. GCM simulations using the GEM model show that the H2O depletion leads to a drop in H2O2, due to the lack of HO2 radicals. Our result brings a new constraint on the photochemistry of H2O2 in the presence of a high dust content. In parallel, we reprocessed the whole TEXES dataset of H2O2 measurements using the latest version of the GEISA database (GEISA 2015). We recently found that there is a significant difference in the H2O2 line strengths between the 2003 and 2015 versions of GEISA. Therefore, all H2O2 volume mixing ratios up to 2014 from TEXES measurements must be reduced by a factor of 1.75. As a consequence, in four cases (Ls around 80°, 100°, 150°, and 209°) the H2O2 abundances show contradictory values between different Martian years. At Ls = 209° the cause seems to be the increased dust content associated with the global dust storm. The inter-annual variability in the three other cases remains unexplained at this time.

Abstract: Since January 2012 we have been monitoring the behavior of sulfur dioxide and water on Venus, using the Texas Echelon Cross-Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) imaging spectrometer at the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility (IRTF, Mauna Kea Observatory). We present here the observations obtained between January 2016 and September 2018. As in the case of our previous runs, data were recorded around 1345 cm−1 (7.4 μm). The molecules SO2, CO2, and HDO (used as a proxy for H2O) were observed, and the cloudtop of Venus was probed at an altitude of about 64 km. The volume mixing ratio of SO2 was estimated using the SO2/CO2 line depth ratios of weak transitions; the H2O volume mixing ratio was derived from the HDO/CO2 line depth ratio, assuming a D/H ratio of 200 times the Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water (VSMOW). As reported in our previous analyses, the SO2 mixing ratio shows strong variations with time and also over the disk, showing evidence of the formation of SO2 plumes with a lifetime of a few hours; in contrast, the H2O abundance is remarkably uniform over the disk and shows moderate variations as a function of time. We performed a statistical analysis of the behavior of the SO2 plumes, using all TEXES data between 2012 and 2018. They appear mostly located around the equator. Their distribution as a function of local time seems to show a depletion around noon; we do not have enough data to confirm this feature definitely. The distribution of SO2 plumes as a function of longitude shows no clear feature, apart from a possible depletion around 100E–150E and around 300E–360E. There seems to be a tendency for the H2O volume mixing ratio to decrease after 2016, and for the SO2 mixing ratio to increase after 2014. However, we see no clear anti-correlation between the SO2 and H2O abundances at the cloudtop, neither on the individual maps nor over the long term. Finally, there is a good agreement between the TEXES results and those obtained in the UV range (SPICAV/Venus Express and UVI/Akatsuki) at a slightly higher altitude. This agreement shows that SO2 observations obtained in the thermal infrared can be used to extend the local time coverage of the SO2 measurements obtained in the UV range.

Abstract: Although water vapour is the main species observed in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko1, 2 and water is the major constituent of cometary nuclei3, 4, limited evidence for exposed water-ice regions on the surface of the nucleus has been found so far5, 6. The absence of large regions of exposed water ice seems a common finding on the surfaces of many of the comets observed so far7, 8, 9. The nucleus of 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko appears to be fairly uniformly coated with dark, dehydrated, refractory and organic-rich material10. Here we report the identification at infrared wavelengths of water ice on two debris falls in the Imhotep region of the nucleus. The ice has been exposed on the walls of elevated structures and at the base of the walls. A quantitative derivation of the abundance of ice in these regions indicates the presence of millimetre-sized pure water-ice grains, considerably larger than in all previous observations6, 7, 8, 9. Although micrometre-sized water-ice grains are the usual result of vapour recondensation in ice-free layers6, the occurrence of millimetre-sized grains of pure ice as observed in the Imhotep debris falls is best explained by grain growth by vapour diffusion in ice-rich layers, or by sintering. As a consequence of these processes, the nucleus can develop an extended and complex coating in which the outer dehydrated crust10 is superimposed on layers enriched in water ice. The stratigraphy observed on 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko11, 12 is therefore the result of evolutionary processes affecting the uppermost metres of the nucleus and does not necessarily require a global layering to have occurred at the time of the comet’s formation.

Abstract: Infrared observations of the coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko were carried out from July to September 2015, i.e., around perihelion (13 August 2015), with the high-resolution channel of the VIRTIS instrument onboard Rosetta. We present the analysis of fluorescence emission lines of H$_2$O, CO$_2$, $^{13}$CO$_2$, OCS, and CH$_4$ detected in limb sounding with the field of view at 2.7-5 km from the comet centre. Measurements are sampling outgassing from the illuminated southern hemisphere, as revealed by H$_2$O and CO$_2$ raster maps, which show anisotropic distributions, aligned along the projected rotation axis. An abrupt increase of water production is observed six days after perihelion. In the mean time, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, and OCS abundances relative to water increased by a factor of 2 to reach mean values of 32%, 0.47%, and 0.18%, respectively, averaging post-perihelion data. We interpret these changes as resulting from the erosion of volatile-poor surface layers. Sustained dust ablation due to the sublimation of water ice maintained volatile-rich layers near the surface until at least the end of the considered period, as expected for low thermal inertia surface layers. The large abundance measured for CO$_2$ should be representative of the 67P nucleus original composition, and indicates that 67P is a CO$_2$-rich comet. Comparison with abundance ratios measured in the northern hemisphere shows that seasons play an important role in comet outgassing. The low CO$_2$/H$_2$O values measured above the illuminated northern hemisphere are not original, but the result of the devolatilization of the uppermost layers., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Abstract: The VIRTIS (Visible, Infrared and Thermal Imaging Spectrometer) instrument on board the Rosetta spacecraft has provided evidence of carbon-bearing compounds on the nucleus of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The very low reflectance of the nucleus (normal albedo of 0.060 ± 0.003 at 0.55 micrometers), the spectral slopes in visible and infrared ranges (5 to 25 and 1.5 to 5% kÅ −1 ), and the broad absorption feature in the 2.9-to-3.6–micrometer range present across the entire illuminated surface are compatible with opaque minerals associated with nonvolatile organic macromolecular materials: a complex mixture of various types of carbon-hydrogen and/or oxygen-hydrogen chemical groups, with little contribution of nitrogen-hydrogen groups. In active areas, the changes in spectral slope and absorption feature width may suggest small amounts of water-ice. However, no ice-rich patches are observed, indicating a generally dehydrated nature for the surface currently illuminated by the Sun.

Abstract: International audience; The Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) is one of the three candidate missions selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) for its next medium-class science mission due for launch in 2026. The goal of the ARIEL mission is to investigate the atmospheres of several hundred planets orbiting distant stars in order to address the fundamental questions on how planetary systems form and evolve. During its four (with a potential extension to six) years mission ARIEL will observe 500+ exoplanets in the visible and the infrared with its meter-class telescope in L2. ARIEL targets will include gaseous and rocky planets down to the Earth-size around different types of stars. The main focus of the mission will be on hot and warm planets orbiting close to their star, as they represent a natural laboratory in which to study the chemistry and formation of exoplanets. The ARIEL mission concept has been developed by a consortium of more than 50 institutes from 12 countries, which include UK, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Ireland and Portugal. The analysis of the ARIEL spectra and photometric data in the 0.5-7.8 micron range will allow to extract the chemical fingerprints of gases and condensates in the planets' atmospheres, including the elemental composition for the most favorable targets. It will also enable the study of thermal and scattering properties of the atmosphere as the planet orbit around the star. ARIEL will have an open data policy, enabling rapid access by the general community to the high-quality exoplanet spectra that the core survey will deliver.

Abstract: International audience; The European Space Agency Rosetta Spacecraft passed within 803 km of the main belt asteroid (2867) Steins on 5 September 2008. The Rosetta Spacecraft carries a number of scientific instruments including a millimeter and submillimeter radiometer and spectrometer. The instrument, named MIRO (Microwave Instrument for the Rosetta Orbiter), consists of a 30-cm diameter, offset parabolic reflector telescope followed by two heterodyne receivers. Center-band operating frequencies of the receivers are near 190 GHz (1.6 mm) and 562 GHz (0.53 mm). Broadband continuum channels are implemented in both frequency bands for the measurement of near surface temperatures and temperature gradients. A 4096 channel CTS (chirp transform spectrometer) having 180 MHz total bandwidth and ˜44 kHz resolution is also connected to the submillimeter receiver. We present the continuum observations of asteroid (2867) Steins obtained during the fly-by with the MIRO instrument. Spectroscopic data were also collected during the fly-by using the MIRO spectrometer fixed-tuned to rotational lines of several molecules. Results of the spectroscopic investigation will be the topic of a separate publication. Comparative thermal models and radiative transfer calculations for Steins are presented. Emissivities of Steins were determined to be 0.6-0.7 and 0.85-0.9 at wavelengths of 0.53 and 1.6 mm, respectively. The thermal inertia of Steins was estimated to be in the range 450-850 J/(m 2 s 0.5 K). Assuming that the emissivity of Steins is determined by the Fresnel reflection coefficients of the surface material, the area-averaged dielectric constant of the surface material is in the range 4-20. These values are rock-like, and are unlike the powdered-regolith surface of the Moon.

Abstract: Polar regions on Mars are the most suitable places to observe water vapor daily variability because in any observation crossing the Pole we can observe very different local time and because the poles are considered to be the main permanent and seasonal water reservoir of the planet. We report on a daily variability of water vapor in the South Pole Region (SPR), observed by OMEGA/Mars Express during the south spring–summer period ( Ls ∼ 250 ° – 270 ° ) outside the CO 2 ice cap, that has never been observed before by other instruments. We have been able to estimate an increase of few precipitable microns during the day. A possible scenario includes the presence of regolith, or another component that could gather water from the atmosphere, adsorbing the water into the surface during the night time and desorbing it as soon as the Sun reaches sufficient height to heat the ground. This hypothesis is even more plausible considering the presence of observed local enhancements in the morning sections associated with the illumination of the Sun and the total absence in the data for water ice.

Abstract: International audience; The outer solar system extends beyond a heliocentric distance of 5 AU. It contains the giant planets and their systems (rings and satellites), the Kuiper belt, the comets (except those which approach episodically the inner solar system) and, at its outer edge, the Oort cloud. The outer solar system physically corresponds to the region located outside the « snow line » which corresponded to the distance of ice condensation in the protodolar disk, and thus made the frontier between the terrestrial and the giant planets at the time of the planets' formation. The outer solar system is charaterized by a very large variety of ob jects, even within a given class of ob jects. Each of the giant planet has its own properties, as well as each of the outer satellites and the ring systems ; all are the products of specific conditions which determined their formation and evolution processes. The existence of the Kuiper belt, suspected on theoretical bases since the 1940s, has been confirmed since 1992 with the observation of over 1200 trans-neptunian ob jects. Thanks to the the developments of more and more performing groundbased instrumentation and the use of large telescopes, these ob jects are now studies in a statistical way, both dynamically and physically, and these studies are precious for constraining the early formation models of the solar system.

Abstract: Aims. We have recorded high spectral resolution spectra and derived precise atmospheric temperature profiles and wind velocities in the atmosphere of Mars. We have compared observations of the planetary mean thermal profile and mesospheric wind velocities on the disk, obtained with our millimetric observations of CO rotational lines, to predictions from the Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique (LMD) Mars General Circulation Model, as provided through the Mars Climate Database (MCD) numerical tool. Methods. We observed the atmosphere of Mars at CO(1−0) and CO(2−1) wavelengths with the IRAM 30-m antenna in June 2001 and November 2005. We retrieved the mean thermal profile of the planet from high and low spectral resolution data with an inversion method detailed here. High spectral resolution spectra were used to derive mesospheric wind velocities on the planetary disk. We also report here the use of 13 CO(2−1) line core shifts to measure wind velocities at 40 km. Results. Neither the Mars Year 24 (MY24) nor the Dust Storm scenario from the Mars Climate Database (MCD) provides satisfactory fits to the 2001 and 2005 data when retrieving the thermal profiles. The Warm scenario only provides good fits for altitudes lower than 30 km. The atmosphere is warmer than predicted up to 60 km and then becomes colder. Dust loading could be the reason for this mismatch. The MCD MY24 scenario predicts a thermal inversion layer between 40 and 60 km, which is not retrieved from the high spectral resolution data. Our results are generally in agreement with other observations from 10 to 40 km in altitude, but our results obtained from the high spectral resolution spectra differ in the 40−70 km layer, where the instruments are the most sensitive. The wind velocities we retrieve from our 12 CO observations confirm MCD predictions for 2001 and 2005. Velocities obtained from 13 CO observations are consistent with MCD predictions in 2001, but are lower than predicted in 2005.

Abstract: International audience; A systematic mapping of water vapor on Mars has been achieved using the imaging spectrometer OMEGA aboard the Mars Express spacecraft, using the depth of the 2.6 μm (ν1, ν3) band of H2O. We report results obtained during two periods: (1) Ls=330–40° (January–June 2004), before and after the equinox, and (2) Ls=90–125°, which correspond to early northern summer. At low latitude, our results are globally consistent with previous measurements from ground-based and space (MAWD/Viking and TES/MGS) observations. However, at early northern summer and at high northern latitude (70–80 °N), the water vapor abundances, which we retrieved, appear to be weaker than MAWD and TES results. At the time of water sublimation during early northern summer, there is a maximum of water vapor content at latitudes 75–80°N and longitudes 210–24°E. This region is not far from the area where OMEGA identified a high abundance of calcium-rich sulfates, most likely gypsum. Our data provide the first high-resolution map of the martian water vapor content above the northern polar cap.

Abstract: The VIRTIS (Visible, Infrared and Thermal Imaging Spectrometer) instrument on board the Rosetta spacecraft has provided evidence of carbon-bearing compounds on the nucleus of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The very low reflectance of the nucleus (normal albedo of 0.060 ± 0.003 at 0.55 micrometers), the spectral slopes in visible and infrared ranges (5 to 25 and 1.5 to 5% kÅ(-1)), and the broad absorption feature in the 2.9-to-3.6-micrometer range present across the entire illuminated surface are compatible with opaque minerals associated with nonvolatile organic macromolecular materials: a complex mixture of various types of carbon-hydrogen and/or oxygen-hydrogen chemical groups, with little contribution of nitrogen-hydrogen groups. In active areas, the changes in spectral slope and absorption feature width may suggest small amounts of water-ice. However, no ice-rich patches are observed, indicating a generally dehydrated nature for the surface currently illuminated by the Sun.

Abstract: The recent identification of large deposits of sulphates by remote sensing and in situ observations has been considered evidence of the past presence of liquid water on Mars. Here we report the unambiguous detection of diverse phyllosilicates, a family of aqueous alteration products, on the basis of observations by the OMEGA imaging spectrometer on board the Mars Express spacecraft. These minerals are mainly associated with Noachian outcrops, which is consistent with an early active hydrological system, sustaining the long-term contact of igneous minerals with liquid water. We infer that the two main families of hydrated alteration products detected-phyllosilicates and sulphates--result from different formation processes. These occurred during two distinct climatic episodes: an early Noachian Mars, resulting in the formation of hydrated silicates, followed by a more acidic environment, in which sulphates formed.

Abstract: International audience; The OMEGA imaging spectrometer aboard Mars Express has been used to map the water vapor abundance over the martian surface, from the analysis of the 2.6 mum band of H2O. As a preliminary result of this study, we present water vapor maps in the northern hemisphere at the time of the northern polar cap sublimation (Ls = 94-112 deg). The maps show a mean H2O mixing ratio of about 2-3× 10-4 at a latitude of 40N, and in the range of 5 × 10-4-10-3 at 60N-80N latitudes. The corresponding mean H2O column densities are about 25 pr-mum at 40N and between 40 and 60 pr-mum at 60N-80N, with uncertainties of about 30 percent. Our results are in agreement with previous results by MAWD/Viking and TES/MGS for latitudes up to 60N, but seem to indicate lower values at high latitude. However they are still globally consistent in view of our error bars.

Abstract: International audience; The evaluation of the planetary Fourier spectrometer performance at Mars is presented by comparing an average spectrum with the ISO spectrum published by Lellouch et al. [2000. Planet. Space Sci. 48, 1393.]. First, the average conditions of Mars atmosphere are compared, then the mixing ratios of the major gases are evaluated. Major and minor bands of CO 2 are compared, from the point of view of features characteristics and bands depth. The spectral resolution is also compared using several solar lines. The result indicates that PFS radiance is valid to better than 1% in the wavenumber range 1800-4200 cm -1 for the average spectrum considered (1680 measurements). The PFS monochromatic transfer function generates an overshooting on the left-hand side of strong narrow lines (solar or atmospheric). The spectral resolution of PFS is of the order of 1.3 cm -1 or better. A large number of narrow features to be identified are discovered.

Abstract: International audience; We present far-infrared, disk-averaged spectra of Jupiter and Saturn that were measured with the Long Wavelength Spectrometer aboard the Infrared Space Observatory. The Long Wavelength Spectrometer covered the wavelength region between 43 and 197 mum and achieved in grating mode a resolving power of 150-300. The spectra observed in the far infrared are compared to synthetic spectra calculated from atmospheric radiative transfer models using expected values for the constituent vertical concentration profiles. Rotational transitions of ammonia and phosphine are responsible for the broad absorption features observed: Strong ammonia absorption manifolds are obvious against the background continuum slope, appearing at 63, 72, 84, 101 and 125 mum in both Jupiter and Saturn. Also phosphine absorption features are clearly present; we found them at the expected wavelengths of 113 and 141 mum in both planets and at 81, 87, 94, 103, 126 and 160 mum on Saturn only. Our findings are in good agreement with the results obtained with other instruments, in particular the Short Wavelength Spectrometer of the Infrared Space Observatory. On Jupiter we obtained the best fit to the observations with models having an NH 3 mixing ratio of 2×10 -4. We fitted Saturn's measured spectrum with models where the ammonia mixing ratio amounted to 10 -4. For phosphine we found an abundance of 7 -3.5+7×10 -6 in the troposphere of this planet.

This condition allows us to define two kinds of media: (1) the atmospheres of solid (exo)planets with a temperature typically ranging between 0°C and 100°C, and (2) the interiors of icy bodies (outer satellites or possibly exosatellites) where the pressure and temperature would fit the liquid phase region of the water phase diagram. In the case of Mars, significant progress has been achieved about our understanding of the history of liquid water in the past, thanks to the findings of recent space missions. The study of the outer satellites is also benefiting from the on-going operation of the Cassini mission. In the case of exopl nets, new discoveries are continuously reported, especially with the Kepler mission, in operation since 2009. With the emergence of transit spectroscopy, a new phase of exoplanets’ exploration has started, their characterization, opening the new field of exoplanetology. In the future, new perspectives appear regarding the exploration of Mars, the giant planets and exoplanets, with the ultimate goal of characterizing the atmospheres of temperate exoplanets.

Abstract: Observations with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) onboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) are used to determine the D/H ratio in Jupiter's and Saturn's atmospheres. The D/H ratio is measured independently in hydrogen (i.e. from the HD/H-2 ratio) and methane (from CH3D/CH4). Observations of the HD R(2) and R(3) rotational lines at 37.7 and 28.5 mum, of the H-2 S(0) and S(1) quadrupolar lines at 17.1 and 28.2 mum, of the methane nu (4) band at 7.7 mum, and of the CH3D nu (6) band at 8.6 mum are analyzed jointly, allowing;1 retrieval of thermal profiles and molecular abundances. On each planet, the D/H determinations from H-2 and CH4 give consistent results, but the accuracy is not sufficient to precisely determine the enrichment factor of D/H ill methane. Combining these determinations, we obtain the following values for the D/H ratio in hydrogen: (D/H)(H2) = (2.25 +/- 0.35) 10(-5) in Jupiter and (1.70(-0.45)(+0.75)) 10(-5) on Saturn. These values are consistent with and somewhat more accurate than roost earlier values. Comparing with inferences of protosolar D/H from solar wind measurements, it is confirmed that Jupiter is a reliable indicator of the protosolar D/H ratio. The protosolar denterium abundance inferred from the jovian value, (2.1 +/- 0.4) 10-5, indicates a minor decrease of the D/H ratio,. over the last 4.55 Gyr, in the part of the Galaxy where the Solar System was formed. Although the error bars overlap, most measurements, including ours, may point to a slightly smaller D/H ratio in Saturn's atmosphere than in Jupiter's, a surprising result which needs confirmation.

26. The 2.4– spectrum of Mars observed with the infrared space observatory

Abstract: The spectrum of Mars at 2.4-45 mum has been observed on July 31, 1997 (L-s = 157 degrees) by the Short-Wavelength Spectrometer of the Infrared Space Observatory. The data consist of a high signal to noise, complete grating spectrum (resolving power R similar to 1500-2500) and portions of the 20-45 mum spectrum observed in Fabry-Perot mode (R similar to 31000). The data show the infrared bands of known martian atmospheric species (CO2, H2O, and CO) with an unprecedented amount of details. The vertical distribution of H2(O) is determined, showing saturation near 10 km. Evidence for scattering in the saturated CO2 band at 2.7 mum and for fluorescence emission in the CO2 4.3 pm band is obtained. No detection of new atmospheric species is achieved, but upper limits are obtained for CH4 and H2CO. In the solar reflected part of the spectrum, which dominates at lambda less than or equal to 4.2 mum, the surface reflectance clearly shows the hydration band with maximum absorption at 2.9 mum, from which a 2.0 -2.7% (by weight) water content in the martian uppermost layer is estimated. A decrease of reflectance from 3.8 to 5 mum is also seen. This behaviour is consistent with basalts and palagonite, but not hematite. Ln the thermal part, mineralogic signatures at 5-12 mum are globally consistent with a basaltic composition. Specific minima an also detected at 5.7, 6.3 (tentative), 7.2 and 11.1 mum. Reexamination of earlier datasets indicates that the latter two have been observed before, although generally not discussed. The presence of additional absorptions at 26.5, 31 and 33.5 mum is also indirectly suggested. Abstract: We present our current understanding of the composition, vertical mixing, cloud structure and the origin of the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. Available observations point to a much more vigorous vertical mixing in Saturn's middle-upper atmosphere than in Jupiter's. The nearly cloud-free nature of the Galileo probe entry site, a 5-micron hotspot, is consistent with the depletion of condensable volatiles to great depths, which is attributed to local meteorology. Somewhat similar depletion of water may be present in the 5-micron bright regions of Saturn also. The supersolar abundances of heavy elements, particularly C and S in Jupiter's atmosphere and C in Saturn's, as well as the progressive increase of C from Jupiter to Saturn and beyond, tend to support the icy planetesimal model of the formation of the giant planets and their atmospheres. However, much work remains to be done, especially in the area of laboratory studies, including identification of possible new microwave absorbers, and modelling, in order to resolve the controversy surrounding the large discrepancy between Jupiter's global ammonia abundance, hence the nitrogen elemental ratio, derived from the earth-based microwave observations and that inferred from the analysis of the Galileo probe-orbiter radio attenuation data for the hotspot. We look forward to the observations from Cassini-Huygens spacecraft which are expected to result not only in a rich harvest of information for Saturn, but a better understanding of the formation of the giant planets and their atmospheres when these data are combined with those that exist for Jupiter.

29. First images of a comet with adaptive optics

Abstract: Using the ADONIS adaptive optics system at ESO (La Silla, Chile), on 8 March 1996, we made the very first observation of a comet with adaptive optics. Comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) has been imaged in the near-infrared (J, H, K bands at 1.2, 1.6 & 2.2 μm respectively). The achieved spatial resolution of ≈ 0.2″, has allowed us to isolate two distinct dust-colour regions in the immediate neighbourhood of the cometary nucleus. On a [J-H] colour index map, a bluer region has been detected in the sunward-facing hemisphere, while a redder one is located symmetrically in the anti-solar direction. The major dust component in the coma remains silicates. These new observations should help to constrain the current models for dust components in comets. They clearly demonstrate the feasibility of observing comets with adaptive optics systems. Future observations of comet Hale-Bopp should greatly benefit from this new technique.

Abstract: The Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) obtains spectral images in the wavelength range 0.7 to 5.2 μm with a spectral resolving power of approximately 200. This spectral range allows NIMS to sense cloud-reflected solar radiation, thermal emission produced in the deep atmosphere, and auroral emission from the thermosphere of Jupiter. Using 5 μm thermal emission spectroscopy, the amount of water vapor in the deep atmosphere, at approximately the (i to 8 bar level, is found to vary by a factor > 100. Deep atmosphere ammonia was also found to vary, with a spatial behavior different from that of water vapor. No evidence is found for a massive water cloud. Using reflected solar radiation in conjunction with thermal emission, two cloud layers are found, the upper at 0.5 bars and a lower one at 1-1.3 bars. The inferred absorption properties of these clouds are consistent with ammonia crystals (the upper cloud) and ammonium hydrosulfide particles (the lower cloud).

31. External supply of oxygen to the atmospheres of the giant planets

Abstract: The atmospheres of the giant planets are reducing, being mainly composed of hydrogen, helium and methane. But the rings and icy satellites that surround these planets, together with the flux of interplanetary dust, could act as important sources of oxygen, which would be delivered to the atmospheres mainly in the form of water ice or silicate dust. Here we report the detection, by infrared spectroscopy, of gaseous H2O in the upper atmospheres of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The implied H2O column densities are 1.5 x 10(15), 9 x 10(13) and 3 x 10(14) molecules cm(-2) respectively. CO2 in comparable amounts was also detected in the atmospheres of Saturn and Neptune. These observations can be accounted for by external fluxes of 10(5)-10(7) H2O molecules cm(-2) s(-1) and subsequent chemical processing in the atmospheres. The presence of gaseous water and infalling dust will affect the photochemistry, energy budget and ionospheric properties of these atmospheres. Moreover, our findings may help to constrain the injection rate and possible activity of distant icy objects in the Solar System.

Abstract: Is Mars actively releasing organic and other minor gases into the atmosphere? We present a comprehensive search for trace species on Mars, targeting multiple volatile organic species (CH 4 , CH 3 OH, H 2 CO, C 2 H 6 , C 2 H 2 , C 2 H 4 ), hydroperoxyl (HO 2 ), several nitrogen compounds (N 2 O, NH 3 , HCN), and two chlorine species (HCl, CH 3 Cl) through their rovibrational spectra in the 2.8–3.7 μm spectral region. The data were acquired over a period of 4 years (2006–2010) using powerful infrared high-resolution spectrometers (CRIRES, NIRSPEC, CSHELL) at high-altitude observatories (VLT, Keck-2, NASA-IRTF), and span a broad range of seasons, Doppler shifts and spatial coverage. Here, we present results from a selection of high-quality spectra obtained on four separate dates, representing a fraction of our search space. For most of these species we derived the most stringent upper limits ever obtained, and because the targeted gases have substantially different resident lifetimes in the Martian atmosphere (from hours to centuries), our measurements not only test for current release but also provide stringent limits on the quiescent levels. In particular, we sampled the same regions where plumes of methane have been recently observed (e.g., Syrtis Major and Valles Marineris), allowing us to test for seasonal and temporal variability.

Abstract: Context. Carbon monoxide (CO) has been detected in all Giant Planets and its origin is both internal and external in Jupiter and Neptune. Despite its first detection in Uranus a decade ago, the magnitude of its internal and external sources remains unconstrained. Aims. We targeted CO lines in Uranus in the submillimeter range to constrain its origin. Methods. We recorded disk-averaged spectra of Uranus with a very high spectral resolution at the frequencies of CO rotational lines in the submillimeter range in 2011-2012. We used empirical and diffusion models of the atmosphere of Uranus to constrain the origin of CO. We also used a thermochemical model of its troposphere to derive an upper limit on the O/H ratio in the deep atmosphere of Uranus. Results. We have detected the CO(8-7) rotational line for the first time, with Herschel-HIFI. Both empirical and diffusion model results show that CO has an external origin. An empirical profile in which CO is constant above the 100mbar level with a mole fraction of 7.1-9.0E-9 (depending on the adopted stratospheric thermal structure) reproduces the data. Sporadic and steady source models cannot be differentiated with our data. Taking Teanby & Irwin's internal source model upper limit of a mole fraction of 2.1E-9 [Teanby & Irwin 2013. ApJ, 775, L49], the deep O/H ratio of Uranus is lower than 500 times solar according to our thermochemical computations. Conclusions. Our work shows that the average mole fraction of CO decreases from the stratosphere to the troposphere and thus strongly advocates for an external source of CO in Uranus. Photochemical modeling of oxygen species in the atmosphere of Uranus and more sensitive observations are needed to reveal the nature of the external source., 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. 34. The Thermal Profile and Water Abundance in the Venus Mesosphere from H2O and HDO Millimeter Observations

Abstract: The 183.310-GHz water vapor transition has been observed in the Venus atmosphere for the first time. The detection was made in January 1991, using the 30-m IRAM radiotelescope. A spectrum of Saturn, recorded during the same night, was used to remove the contribution due to terrestrial mesospheric water. Using the depth and the FWHM of the observed absorption line, we derive a water mixing ratio of 1.0 (+ 1.0, -0.5) ppm above the clouds, and a temperature of 140 (±10) K at the level z = 95 km ( P = 0.06 mb). In July 1993, we reobserved the HDO transition at 225.987 GHz, which we first detected in August 1990 (T. Encrenaz et al. 1991, Astron. Astrophys. 246, L63-L66). The new set of data was obtained at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO), with improved signal-to-noise and spectral resolution with respect to previous measurements. From the 1993 data we derive a water mixing ratio of 7.0 (+5.0, -4.0) ppm above the clouds, and a temperature higher than 145 K at the z = 95-km level. The water abundance is derived assuming a deuterium enrichment factor of 120 with respect to the terrestrial value (C. de Bergh et al . 1991, Science 251, 547-549). If the deuterium enrichment factor is close to 160, as measured by G. L. Bjoraker et al . (1992, Bull. Am. Astron. Soc. 24, 995-995), the difference between the H 2 O measurements is reduced, but the data might still suggest some possible fluctuation in the water vapor content above the clouds between 1991 and 1993.

Abstract: In July 1994, the collisions of the fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter resulted in dramatic changes in the planet's atmosphere. Observations of the events suggest that the composition and thermal properties of the atmosphere were considerably modified at the impact sites, with the changes persisting for times lasting from minutes to weeks (see, for example, refs 1-4). Here we report observations of the impact sites at millimetre wave-lengths, which reveal strong emission lines associated with carbon monoxide, carbonyl sulphide and carbon monosulphide. The abundance of carbon monoxide in the jovian atmosphere is normally very low; carbonyl sulphide and carbon monosulphide, on the other hand, have not hitherto been detected. We find that the largest fragments (G and K) each produced approximately 10(14) g of carbon monoxide, 3 x 10(12) g of carbonyl sulphide and 3 x 10(11) g of carbon monosulphide, most probably by shock-induced chemical reactions. Our observations also place firm constraints on the thermal response of Jupiter's stratosphere to the impacts.

Abstract: The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft made a close flyby of asteroid (21) Lutetia on July 10, 2010. The spacecraft carries a dual-band radiometer/spectrometer instrument, named MIRO, which operates at 190 GHz (1.6 mm) and 560 GHz (0.5 mm). During the flyby, the MIRO instrument measured the temperature of Lutetia in both the northern and southern hemispheres. At the time of the flyby, the northern hemisphere was seasonally sun-lit and warmer than the southern hemisphere. Abstract: Exoplanetary science is one of the fastest evolving fields of today’s astronomical research, continuously yielding unexpected and surprising results. Ground-based planet-hunting surveys, together with dedicated space missions such as Kepler and CoRoT, are delivering an ever-increasing number of exoplanets, over 690, and ESA’s Gaia mission will escalate the exoplanetary census into the several thousands. The next logical step is the characterization of these new worlds. What is their nature? Why are they as they are? Use of the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope to probe the atmospheres of transiting hot, gaseous exoplanets has opened perspectives unimaginable even just 10 years ago, demonstrating that it is indeed possible with current technology to address the ambitious goal of characterizing the atmospheres of these alien worlds. However, these successful measurements have also shown the difficulty of understanding the physics and chemistry of these exotic environments when having to rely on a limited number of observations performed on a handful of objects. To progress substantially in this field, a dedicated facility for exoplanet characterization, able to observe a statistically significant number of planets over time and a broad spectral range will be essential. Additionally, the instrument design (e.g., detector performances, photometric stability) will be tailored to optimize the extraction of the astrophysical signal. In this paper, we analyze the performance and tradeoffs of a 1.2/1.4 m space telescope for exoplanet transit spectroscopy from the visible to the mid-IR. We present the signal-to-noise ratio as a function of integration time and stellar magnitude/spectral type for the acquisition of spectra of planetary atmospheres for a variety of scenarios: hot, warm, and temperate planets orbiting stars ranging in spectral type from hot F- to cooler M-dwarfs. Our results include key examples of known planets (e.g., HD 189733b, GJ 436b, GJ 1214b, and Cancri 55 e) and simulations of plausible terrestrial and gaseous planets, with a variety of thermodynamical conditions. We conclude that even most challenging targets, such as super-Earths in the habitable zone of late-type stars, are within reach of an M-class, space-based spectroscopy mission.

Abstract: A dedicated mission to investigate exoplanetary atmospheres represents a major milestone in our quest to understand our place in the universe by placing our Solar System in context and by addressing the suitability of planets for the presence of life. EChO -the Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory- is a mission concept specifically geared for this purpose. EChO will provide simultaneous, multi-wavelength spectroscopic observations on a stable platform that will allow very long exposures. EChO will build on observations by Hubble, Spitzer and groundbased telescopes, which discovered the first molecules and atoms in exoplanetary atmospheres. EChO will simultaneously observe a broad enough spectral region -from the visible to the mid-IR- to constrain from one single spectrum the temperature structure of the atmosphere and the abundances of the major molecular species. The spectral range and resolution are tailored to separate bands belonging to up to 30 molecules to retrieve the composition and temperature structure of planetary atmospheres. The target list for EChO includes planets ranging from Jupiter-sized with equilibrium temperatures Teq up to 2000 K, to those of a few Earth masses, with Teq ~300 K. We have baselined a dispersive spectrograph design covering continuously the 0.4-16 micron spectral range in 6 channels (1 in the VIS, 5 in the IR), which allows the spectral resolution to be adapted from several tens to several hundreds, depending on the target brightness. The instrument will be mounted behind a 1.5 m class telescope, passively cooled to 50 K, with the instrument structure and optics passively cooled to ~45 K. EChO will be placed in a grand halo orbit around L2. We have also undertaken a first-order cost and development plan analysis and find that EChO is easily compatible with the ESA M-class mission framework., Comment: Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy, 23 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: The Visible, InfraRed, and Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on Rosetta obtained hyperspectral images, spectral reflectance maps, and temperature maps of the asteroid 21 Lutetia. No absorption features, of either silicates or hydrated minerals, have been detected across the observed area in the spectral range from 0.4 to 3.5 micrometers. The surface temperature reaches a maximum value of 245 kelvin and correlates well with topographic features. The thermal inertia is in the range from 20 to 30 joules meter(-2) kelvin(-1) second(-0.5), comparable to a lunarlike powdery regolith. Spectral signatures of surface alteration, resulting from space weathering, seem to be missing. Lutetia is likely a remnant of the primordial planetesimal population, unaltered by differentiation processes and composed of chondritic materials of enstatitic or carbonaceous origin, dominated by iron-poor minerals that have not suffered aqueous alteration.

Abstract: The high spectral resolution and sensitivity of Herschel/HIFI allows for the detection of multiple rotational water lines and accurate determinations of water production rates in comets. In this letter we present HIFI observations of the fundamental 110-101 (557 GHz) ortho and 111-000 (1113 GHz) para rotational transitions of water in comet 81P/Wild 2 acquired in February 2010. We mapped the extent of the water line emission with five point scans. Line profiles are computed using excitation models which include excitation by collisions with electrons and neutrals and solar infrared radiation. We derive a mean water production rate of $1.0 \times 10^{28}$ molecules s$^{-1}$ at a heliocentric distance of 1.61 AU about 20 days before perihelion, in agreement with production rates measured from the ground using observations of the 18-cm OH lines. Furthermore, we constrain the electron density profile and gas kinetic temperature, and estimate the coma expansion velocity by fitting the water line shapes., Accepted for publication in A&A (special issue on HIFI first results)

Abstract: Comet C/2006 W3 (Christensen) was observed in November 2009 at 3.3 AU from the Sun with Herschel. The PACS instrument acquired images of the dust coma in 70- and 160-micrometers filters, and spectra covering several H2O rotational lines. Spectra in the range 450-1550 GHz were acquired with SPIRE. The comet emission continuum from 70 to 672 micrometers was measured, but no lines were detected. The spectral energy distribution indicates thermal emission from large particles and provides a measure of the size distribution index and dust production rate. The upper limit to the water production rate is compared to the production rates of other species (CO, CH3OH, HCN, H2S, OH) measured with the IRAM 30-m and Nancay telescopes. The coma is found to be strongly enriched in species more volatile than water, in comparison to comets observed closer to the Sun. The CO to H2O production rate ratio exceeds 220%. Abstract: International audience; The Rosetta spacecraft accomplished a flyby of Mars on its way to 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 25 February 2007. In this paper we describe the measurements obtained by the M channel of the Visual and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS-M) and the first scientific results derived from their analysis. The broad spectral coverage of the VIRTIS-M in the IR permitted the study of various phenomena occurring in the Martian atmosphere; observations were further exploited to achieve accurate absolute radiometric calibration. Nighttime data from the VIRTIS-M constrain the air temperature profile in the lower atmosphere (5-30 km), using variations in CO2 opacity at 4.3 mum. A comparison of this data with the global circulation model (GCM) by Forget et al. (1999) shows a trend of slightly higher air temperature in the VIRTIS-M retrievals; this is accompanied by the presence of moderate decreases (˜5 K) in large sections of the equatorial region. This is potentially related to the occurrence of water ice clouds. Daytime data from the VIRTIS-M reveal CO2 non-local thermodynamic equilibrium emission in the high atmosphere. A mapping of emission intensity confirms its strict dependence on solar zenith angle. Additionally, devoted limb observations allowed the retrieval of vertical emission intensity profiles, indicating a peak around 105 km in southern tropical regions. Ozone content can be effectively monitored by the emission of O2 (a1Deltag) at 1.27 mum. Retrieved emission intensity shows that polar regions are particularly rich in ozone. Aerosol scattering was observed in the 1-2.5 mum region above the night region above the night disk, suggesting the occurrence of very high noctilucent clouds.

Abstract: We have obtained the first continuous disk averaged spectrum of Mars from 450 to 1550 Ghz using the Herschel-SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer. The spectrum was obtained at a constant resolution of 1.4 GHz across the whole band. The flux from the planet is such that the instrument was operated in "bright source" mode to prevent saturation of the detectors. This was the first successful use of this mode and in this work we describe the method used for observing Mars together with a detailed discussion of the data reduction techniques required to calibrate the spectrum. We discuss the calibration accuracy obtained and describe the first comparison with surface and atmospheric models. In addition to a direct photometric measurement of the planet the spectrum contains the characteristic transitions of 12CO from J 5-4 to J 13-12 as well as numerous H2O transitions. Together these allow the comparison to global atmospheric models allowing the mean mixing ratios of water and 12CO to be investigated. We find that it is possible to match the observed depth of the absorption features in the spectrum with a fixed water mixing ratio of 1 x 10-4 and a 12CO mixing ratio of 9 x 10-4, Accepted for publication in Astronomy&Astrophysics, Herschel First Results special issue

Abstract: We report on the initial analysis of Herschel/HIFI carbon monoxide (CO) observations of the Martian atmosphere performed between 11 and 16 April 2010. We selected the (7-6) rotational transitions of the isotopes ^{13}CO at 771 GHz and C^{18}O at 768 GHz in order to retrieve the mean vertical profile of temperature and the mean volume mixing ratio of carbon monoxide. The derived temperature profile agrees within less than 5 K with general circulation model (GCM) predictions up to an altitude of 45 km, however, show about 12-15 K lower values at 60 km. The CO mixing ratio was determined as 980 \pm 150 ppm, in agreement with the 900 ppm derived from Herschel/SPIRE observations in November 2009., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (special issue on HIFI first results); minor changes to match published version

Abstract: International audience; Context. The CO(3–2) line has been observed in the atmosphere of Saturn. The CO(3–2) observation proves that an external source of CO exists in the stratosphere of the planet. Aims. We attempt to constrain the type and magnitude of the external source of CO in the atmosphere of Saturn, by observing the emission core of the CO(6–5) line. Methods. We observed the CO(6–5) line at the limbs of Saturn. We analysed the observations by means of a 1-D transport model of the atmosphere of Saturn, coupled with a radiative transfer model. Results. We obtained a high signal-to-noise ratio spectrum that confirms the existence of an external source of CO in the stratosphere of Saturn. We demonstrated that a cometary origin of CO is the most probable, an impact occurring 220±30 years ago and depositing (2.1±0.4)×1015 g of CO above 0.1 mbar. However, we cannot totally reject the possibility of CO originating (at least partially) in a steady source. Conclusions. Complete photochemical modelling of the oxygen compounds is required to determine realistic error bars of the inferred quantities and to conclude on the origin of CO.

Abstract: International audience; The IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer has been used to map the CO(1–0) rotational line in Mars' middle atmosphere. Absolute winds and thermal profiles were retrieved during the 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005 planet's oppositions. The observations sampled various seasons (L=143, 196, 262, 317 and 322), and different dust situations (clear, global storm, regional storm). The absolute winds were derived by measuring directly the Doppler lineshifts. The main zonal circulation near 50 km is dominated by strong retrograde winds, with typical velocities of 70–170 m/s, strongly varying seasonally, latitudinally, and longitudinally (in particular between morning and evening). Comparison of the retrieved temperature with a general circulation model indicates that the model often underestimates the temperatures in the middle (20–50 km) atmosphere, and overestimates them above 50 km.

Abstract: We have performed the first observation of the CO(3-2) spectral line in the atmosphere of Saturn with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We have used a transport model of the atmosphere of Saturn to constrain the origin of the observed CO. The CO line is best-fit when the CO is located at pressures less than ( 15 ± 2 ) mbar with a mixing ratio of ( 2.5 ± 0.6 ) × 10 - 8 implying an external origin. By modeling the transport in Saturn’s atmosphere, we find that a cometary impact origin with an impact 200–350 years ago is more likely than continuous deposition by interplanetary dust particles (IDP) or local sources (rings/satellites). This result would confirm that comet impacts are relatively frequent and efficient providers of CO to the atmospheres of the outer planets. However, a diffuse and/or local source cannot be rejected, because we did not account for photochemistry of oxygen compounds. Finally, we have derived an upper limit of ∼ 1 × 10 - 9 on the tropospheric CO mixing ratio.

Abstract: We have analyzed spectra of CO recorded with the instrument PFS onboard Mars Express in the (1–0) 4.7 μ m band. The dataset we used ranges in time from January until June 2004 ( L S = 331 ∘ .17 until L S = 51 ∘ .61 ; end of Mars Year 26, beginning of Mars Year 27). The aim of this work was to determine the amplitude of the CO mixing ratio departures from the mean globally averaged value currently admitted ( 8 ± 3 × 10 - 4 ) [Kaplan, L.D., Connes, J., Connes, P., 1969. Carbon monoxide in the martian atmosphere. Astron. J. 157, L187–L192] as a function of season, local time and location on the planet. We therefore processed the data from 90 calibrated orbits. The globally averaged CO mixing ratio value we derive from our dataset, 11.1 × 10 - 4 , is compatible with the range found by Kaplan et al. [1969. Carbon monoxide in the martian atmosphere. Astron. J. 157, L187–L192], although somewhat higher than the “standard” value. However, the CO mixing ratio we retrieve exhibits large variations (roughly between 3 × 10 - 4 and 18 × 10 - 4 ). Such relative variations have been used on a statistical basis to derive main trends as a function of latitude for three L S ranges: 331 – 360 ∘ , 0– 30 ∘ and 30– 52 ∘ . For the first L S range, we seem to have an enhancement of the CO mixing ratio towards the northern latitudes, probably linked to the CO 2 condensation in winter on the north polar cap. The situation for the two other L S ranges is not so clear, mainly as we lack data on the southern hemisphere. We roughly agree with the work of Krasnopolsky [2007. Long-term spectroscopic observations of Mars using IRTF/CSHELL: mapping of O2 dayglow, CO and search for CH4. Icarus 190, 93–102] for L S = 331 – 360 ∘ , thus confirming the effect of seasonal condensation of CO 2 on the north polar cap, but we have no agreement for other seasons.
