Many population studies have been performed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to understand the bulk properties of protoplanetary disks around young stars. The studied populations mostly consisted of G, K & M stars, with relatively few more massive Herbig stars. With GAIA updated distances, now is a good time to use ALMA archival data for a Herbig disk population study and take an important step forward in our understanding of planet formation. This work determines the masses and sizes of all Herbig dust disks observed with ALMA to date out to 450 pc. These masses and sizes are put into context of the Lupus and Upper Sco T Tauri disk populations. ALMA Band 6 and Band 7 archival data of 36 Herbig stars are used, making this work 64% complete excluding Orion. Using stellar parameters and distances the dust masses and sizes of the disks are determined and survival analysis is used to make cumulative distributions of the dust masses and radii. Herbig disks have a higher dust mass than the T Tauri disk populations of Lupus and Upper Sco by factors of $\sim3$ and $\sim7$ respectively. In addition, Herbig disks are often larger than the typical T Tauri disk. Although the masses and sizes of Herbig disks extend over a similar range as those of T Tauri disks, the distributions of masses and sizes of Herbig disks are significantly skewed toward higher values. Lastly, group I disks are more massive than group II disks. Based on these findings we speculate that these differences between Herbig and T Tauri disks find their origin in an initial disk mass that scales with the stellar mass, and that subsequent disk evolution enlarges the observable differences, especially if (sub)mm continuum optical depth plays a role. High-energy processes in young stellar objects (YSOs) occur in very early evolutionary stages, mostly due to intense coronal-type activity. These processes can be traced by thermal X-ray emission, widely studied in the last few decades, and non-thermal radio emission at cm- and mm-wavelengths, now routinely available with the development of the most modern radio facilities. In this context, we present a follow-up of our deep VLA radio survey in the central part of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) at cm-wavelengths, now expanded to the outskirts of the cluster, revealing hundreds of young stars at sub-arcsecond resolution over ~20′×20′. We study variability at high-time resolution and report the discovery of high proper motions of faint features related to the OMC1 explosion. We also present evidence of the effect that the high-mass stars at the centre of the cluster have on the radio properties of nearby sources which most likely show enhanced free-free radio emission from external photoevaporation. In order to expand our study of non-thermal radio variability in YSOs we made use of ALMA (mm-wavelengths) and the VLBA (cm-wavelengths). With ALMA we provide the first systematic monitoring of synchrotron flares which are of particular relevance for the irradiation of protoplanetary discs as well as for disc mass measurements of insufficiently resolved protoplanetary discs, while the VLBA milliarcsecond resolution observations allow us to filter out any thermal emission making possible the study of the exclusively non-thermal population at cm-wavelengths in the ONC for which we present a variability study.

Jets and outflows are thought to play important roles in regulating star formation and disk evolution. HD 163296 is a well-studied Herbig Ae star that hosts proto-planet candidates, a protoplanetary disk, a protostellar jet, and a molecular outflow, which makes it an excellent laboratory for studying jets. We aim to characterize the jet at the inner regions and check if there are large differences with the features at large separations. A secondary objective is to demonstrate the performance of Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) in high-contrast imaging of extended line emission. MUSE in the narrow field mode (NFM) can provide observations at optical wavelengths with high spatial ($\sim$75 mas) and medium spectral ($R\sim$2500) resolution. With the high-resolution spectral differential imaging (HRSDI) technique, we can characterize the kinematic structures and physical conditions of jets down to 100 mas. We use PIONIER data from the ESO archive and GRAVITY data that were obtained in June 2017 with the four 8m telescopes. We use a parametric disk model and the 3D radiative transfer code MCFOST to reproduce the Spectral Energy Distribution and match the interferometric observations. To match the SED , our model requires a stellar luminosity of 2.5 Lsun, higher than any previously determined values. Such a high value is needed to accommodate the circumstellar extinction caused by the highly inclined disk, which has been neglected in previous studies. While using an effective temperature of 4800 K determined through high-resolution spectroscopy, we derive a stellar radius of 2.29 Rsun. These revised fundamental parameters, when combined with the mass estimates available , lead to an age of 0.5-2.0 Ma for RY Lup, in better agreement with the age of the Lupus association than previous determinations. Our disk model nicely reproduces the interferometric GRAVITY data and is in good agreement with the PIONIER ones. We derive an inner rim location at 0.12~au from the central star. This model corresponds to an inclination of the inner disk of 50deg, which is in mild tension with previous determinations of a more inclined outer disk from SPHERE (70 deg in NIR) and ALMA(67 $\pm$5 deg) images, but consistent with the inclination determination from the ALMA CO spectra (55$\pm$5deg). Increasing the inclination of the inner disk to 70 deg leads to a higher line-of-sight extinction and therefore requires a higher stellar luminosity of 4.65 Lsun to match the observed flux levels. This luminosity would translate to a stellar radius of 3.13~Rsun, leading to an age of 2-3~Ma, and a stellar mass of about 2 Msun, in disagreement with the observed dynamical mass estimate of 1.3-1.5 Msun. Young accreting stars drive outflows that collimate into jets, which can be seen hundreds of au from their driving sources. Accretion and outflow activity cease with system age, and it is believed that magneto-centrifugally launched disk winds are critical agents in regulating accretion through the protoplanetary disk. Protostellar jets are well studied in classical T~Tauri stars ($M_\star\lesssim2\,M_\odot$), while few nearby ($d\lesssim150\,$pc) intermediate-mass stars ($M_\star=2-10\,M_\odot$), known as Herbig Ae/Be stars, have detected jets. We report VLT/MUSE observations of the Herbig~Ae/Be star HD~100546 and the discovery of a protostellar jet. The jet is similar in appearance to jets driven by low-mass stars and compares well with the jet of HD~163296, the only other known optical jet from a nearby Herbig~Ae/Be star. We derive a (one-sided) mass-loss rate in the jet of $\log \dot{M}_{jet} \sim -9.5$ (in $M_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$) and a ratio of outflow to accretion of roughly $3\times10^{-3}$, which is lower than that of CTTS jets. The discovery of the HD~100546 jet is particularly interesting because the protoplanetary disk around HD~100546 shows a large radial gap, spiral structure, and might host a protoplanetary system. A bar-like structure previously seen in H$\alpha$ with VLT/SPHERE shares the jet position angle, likely represents the base of the jet, and suggests a jet-launching region within about 2\,au. We conclude that the evolution of the disk at radii beyond a few au does not affect the ability of the system to launch jets., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A letters

Two multiple stars - the quadruple star - Bootis (ADS 9173) and the triple star T Taury were investigated. The visual double star - Bootiswas studied on the basis of the Pulkovo 26-inch refractor observations 1982-2013. An invisible satellite of the component A was discovered due to long-term uniform series of observations. Its orbital period is 20 ± 2 years. The known invisible satellite of the component B with near 5 years period was confirmed due to high precision CCD observations. The astrometric orbits of the both components were calculated. The orbits of inner and outer pairs of the pre-main sequence binary T Taury were calculated on the basis of high precision observations by the VLT and on the Keck II Telescope. This weakly hierarchical triple system is stable with probability more than 70%.

The impact of stellar multiplicity on the evolution of planet-forming disks is still the subject of debate. Here we present and analyze disk structures around ten multiple stellar systems that were included in an unbiased, high spatial resolution survey performed with ALMA of 32 protoplanetary disks in the Taurus star-forming region. At the unprecedented spatial resolution of ~0.12" we detect and spatially resolve the disks around all primary stars, and those around eight secondary and one tertiary star. The dust radii of disks around multiple stellar systems are smaller than those around single stars in the same stellar mass range and in the same region. The disks in multiple stellar systems also show a steeper decay of the millimeter continuum emission at the outer radius than disks around single stars, suggestive of the impact of tidal truncation on the shape of the disks in multiple systems. However, the observed ratio between the dust disk radii and the observed separation of the stars in the multiple systems is consistent with analytic predictions of the effect of tidal truncation only if the eccentricities of the binaries are rather high (typically >0.5), or if the observed dust radii are a factor of two smaller than the gas radii, as is typical for isolated systems. The magnetic fields of young stars set their coronal properties and control their spin evolution via the star-disc interaction and outflows. Using 14 magnetic maps of 10 classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) we investigate their closed X-ray emitting coronae, their open wind-bearing magnetic fields, and the geometry of magnetospheric accretion flows. The magnetic fields of all the CTTSs are multipolar. Stars with simpler (more dipolar) large-scale magnetic fields have stronger fields, are slower rotators, and have larger X-ray emitting coronae compared to stars with more complex large-scale magnetic fields. The field complexity controls the distribution of open and closed field regions across the stellar surface, and strongly influences the location and shapes of accretion hot spots. However, the higher order field components are of secondary importance in determining the total unsigned open magnetic flux, which depends mainly on the strength of the dipole component and the stellar surface area. Likewise, the dipole component alone provides an adequate approximation of the disc truncation radius. For some stars, the pressure of the hot coronal plasma dominates the stellar magnetic pressure and forces open the closed field inside the disc truncation radius. We present radiation transfer models of rotating young stellar objects (YSOs) with hotspots in their atmospheres, inner disk warps and other 3-D effects in the nearby circumstellar environment. Our models are based on the geometry expected from the magneto-accretion theory, where material moving inward in the disk flows along magnetic field lines to the star and creates stellar hotspots upon impact. Due to rotation of the star and magnetosphere, the disk is variably illuminated. We compare our model light curves to data from the Spitzer YSOVAR project (Morales-Calderon et al. 2014, Cody et al. 2014) to determine if these processes can explain the variability observed at optical and mid-infrared wavelengths in young stars. We focus on those variables exhibiting "dipper" behavior that may be periodic, quasi-periodic, or aperiodic. We find that the stellar hotspot size and temperature affects the optical and near-infrared light curves, while the shape and vertical extent of the inner disk warp affects the mid-IR light curve variations. Clumpy disk distributions with non-uniform fractal density structure produce more stochastic light curves. We conclude that the magneto-accretion theory is consistent with certain aspects of the multi-wavelength photometric variability exhibited by low-mass YSOs. More detailed modeling of individual sources can be used to better determine the stellar hotspot and inner disk geometries of particular sources., Accepted to ApJ

A previous study on RCW 34 in the NIR discov- ered many deeply embedded young stellar objects which were suspected to be T Tauri stars and which justified further investigation. The data used in this study consisted of three sets, the first two are photometric and spectroscopic data sets which were obtained during the first two weeks of February 2002. A third data set of spectroscopic observations was obtained by the author during the second week of 2011 of selected candidates using results from the NIR study and from the photometric data sets. All of the spectroscopy was conducted with the long slit spectrograph on the 1.9-m telescope and the photometry with DANDICAM on the 1.0-m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Sutherland. Objectives accomplished in the course of this study were to understand, ob- tain, reduce and interpret photometric and long slit spectroscopic CCD images. From the photometric results 57 stars showed excess blue emission on a colour-colour diagram which could be generated by circumstellar matter. The spectroscopic study showed 5 stars that showed H emission and 2 with strong Li absorption lines which confirm the suspicions of the NIR study about T Tauri stars in the region. All of the stars from the spectroscopic study in 2011 were identified as low-mass K or M type stars. Using colour-magnitude diagrams it was possible to see that the majority of the stars in the cluster are low-mass pre-main sequence stars. The stars matching between the optical and NIR filters were plotted on NIR colour-colour diagrams showing that the 5 stars that had H emission lines also had NIR colours characteristic to T Tauri stars. Out of the 5 stars that showed H emission, 2 were found to be classical T Tauris and three were found to be weak line T Tauris. The soft X-ray emission from high density plasma in CTTS is associated with the accretion process. It is still unclear whether this high density cool plasma is heated in the accretion shock, or if it is coronal plasma fed/modified by the accretion process. We conducted a coordinated quasi-simultaneous optical and X-ray observing campaign of the CTTS V2129 Oph (Chandra/HETGS data to constrain the X-ray emitting plasma components, and optical observations to constrain the characteristics of accretion and magnetic field). We analyze a 200 ks Chandra/HETGS observation of V2129 Oph, subdivided into two 100 ks segments, corresponding to two different phases within one stellar rotation. The X-ray emitting plasma covers a wide range of temperatures: 2-34 MK. The cool plasma component of V2129 Oph varies between the two segments of the Chandra observation: high density plasma (log Ne ~ 12.1) with high EM at ~ 3-4 MK is present during the 1st segment; during the 2nd segment this plasma component has lower EM and lower density (log Ne < 11.5), although the statistical significance of these differences is marginal. Hotter plasma components, T > 10 MK, show variability on short time scales (~ 10 ks), typical of coronal plasma. A clear flare, detected in the 1st segment, could be located in a large coronal loop (> 3 Rstar). Our observation provides further confirmation that the dense cool plasma at a few MK in CTTS is material heated in the accretion shock. The variability of this cool plasma component on V2129 Oph may be explained in terms of X-rays emitted in the accretion shock and seen with different viewing angles at the two rotational phases probed by our observation. During the 1st time interval direct view of the shock region is possible, while, during the 2nd, the accretion funnel itself intersects the line of sight to the shock region, preventing us from observing accretion-driven X-rays., 15 pages, 11 figures. We provide an overview of a multi-wavelength observing campaign focusing on the accretion and coronal processes in the young star V2129 Oph. V2129 Oph is a classical T Tauri star with a 6.5 day rotation period in the ρ Oph star forming region. On 27-29 June 2009 we obtained two 100 ksec Chandra HETG exposures, aiming at opposite hemispheres of the star. We discuss the X-ray data elsewhere. In order to place the coronal X-ray emission in context, we obtained contemporaneous optical and near-IR photometry and high dispersion optical spectroscopy. The photometry shows the existence of dark photospheric spots. The Hα line profiles show a modulation of the mean Hα velocity and the presence of red-shifted absorption, probably from the accretion stream, at certain phases. Zeeman Doppler images reveal the presence of both a cool spot and an accreting region at similar longitudes.

Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) are young, late-type objects, that still accrete matter from a circumstellar disk. Analytical treatments and numerical simulations predict instabilities of the accretion shock on the stellar surface. We search for variability on timescales below a few minutes in the CTTS TW Hya and AA Tau. TW Hya was observed with SALTICAM on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in narrow-band filters around the Balmer jump. The observations were performed in slit mode, which provides a time resolution of about 0.1 s. For AA Tau we obtained observations with OPTIMA, a single photon-counting device with even better time resolution. Small-scale variability typically lasts a few seconds, however, no significant periodicity is detected. We place a 99 % confidence upper limit on the pulsed fraction of the lightcurves. The relative amplitude is below 0.001 for TW Hya in the frequency range 0.02-3 Hz in the 340 nm filter and 0.1-3 Hz in the 380 nm filter. The corresponding value for AA Tau is an amplitude of 0.005 for 0.02-50 Hz. The relevant timescales indicate that shock instabilites should not be seen directly in our optical and UV observations, but the predicted oscialltions would induce observable variations in the reddening. I present a summary of recent observational constraints on the accretion properties of young stars and brown dwarfs with focus on the high-energy emission. In their T Tauri phase young stars assemble a few percent of their mass by accretion from a disk. Various observational signatures of disks around pre-main sequence stars and the ensuing accretion process are found in the IR and optical regime: e.g. excess emission above the stellar photosphere, strong and broad emission lines, optical veiling. At high energies evidence for accretion is less obvious, and the X-ray emission from stars has historically been ascribed to magnetically confined coronal plasmas. While being true for the bulk of the emission, new insight obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations has unveiled contributions from accretion and outflow processes to the X-ray emission from young stars. Their smaller siblings, the brown dwarfs, have been shown to undergo a T Tauri phase on the basis of optical/IR observations of disks and measurements of accretion rates. Most re-cently, first evidence was found for X-rays produced by accretion in a young brown dwarf, complementing the suspected analogy between stars and substellar objects.

The magnetic field plays a major role in the star evolution as weil as its interaction with the circumstellar environment. A consequence of the magnetic activity is the existence of stellar surface structures. Unfortunately, very few stars can be spatially resolved by telescope so that indirect methods are needed. Doppler imaging is one of them. We first begin with a detailed presentation of Doppler imaging. We explain, more briefly, what is tomography or equivalently, classical Radon transform. This enable us to show the analogy between these two methods. Doppler imaging is then express as a generalized Radon transform. It is thus easier to study the identification of this inverse problem. In particular we deduce the existence of some radial functions in the Doppler imaging operator kernel. Efficient numerical code are adapted to our geometry in order to characterize these functions of the kernel precedently deduced. Then we focus on the sampling geometry in Doppler imaging. Again we extend some well known results of efficient sampling in classical tomography to the rotation invariant generalized Radon transform with polynomial weight functions. This result can be applied on two extremely cases in Doppler imaging. Besides, we deal with Doppler imaging astrophysical implications. First, we show some evidence of the stars magnetic activity, in particular for the T Tauri stars. Then we briefly present how magnetic field is part of evolution models. Secondly, we make a short revue of the main methods that help to estimate the magnetic activity and we insist on the specificity of Doppler imaging among these methods. At least, this technique is applied to some real data that we obtained on SU Aurigae from the Observatoire de Haute Provence. Some evidence of surface structures on this T Tauri star is deduced and discussed., Le champ magnétique des étoiles joue un rôle essentiel dans leur évolution interne et dans l'interaction qu'elles entretiennent avec leur environnement. Il se manifeste, entre autre, par l'existence de structures inhomogènes à leur surface. Hélas à de rares exceptions la résolution des télescopes reste insuffisante pour les résoudre spatialement. Ceci oblige donc à se tourner vers des méthodes indirectes. Telle est le but de l'imagerie Doppler. Après un exposé détaillé du principe de l'imagerie Doppler et quelques rappels sur la tomographie - transformée de Radon classique - nous montrons que cette technique astrophysique peut être traduite en termes de transformée de Radon généralisée. Cette réécriture du problème inverse d'imagerie Doppler permet d'étudier l'identifiabilité. Nous en déduisons, en particulier, l'existence de fonctions radiales du noyau. Des codes numériques performants utilisés classiquement en tomographie sont ensuite adaptés à notre type de mesure. Ils permettront de mieux caractériser les fonctions du noyau déduites de l'étude précédente. Nous nous intéressons ensuite à la géométrie d'échantillonnage des mesures en imagerie Doppler. Pour cela, nous étendons les résultats de schémas d'échantillonnage de la transformée de Radon classique à la transformée de Radon généralisée invariante par rotation avec fonction poids polynomiales. Ce résultat peut être appliqué à deux cas singuliers en imagerie Doppler. Par ailleurs, nous présentons les enjeux astrophysiques de l'imagerie Doppler : dans un premier temps sont résumées diverses manifestations du champ magnétique dans l'activité des étoiles, en particulier des étoiles jeunes T Tauri ainsi que le rôle de ce champ dans certains modèles d'évolution. Dans un deuxième temps sont données diverses techniques permettant d'estimer l'activité magnétique, parmi lesquelles l'imagerie Doppler dont la spécificité est soulignée. Enfin, cette technique est appliquée sur des données réelles issues d'observations que nous avons menées à l'Observatoire de Haute Provence. Des structures en surface sont déduites et les résultats sont discutés.

The Astrophysical Journal 776.1 (2013): 44, reproduced by permission of the AAS, This work presents X-Shooter/Very Large Telescope spectra of the prototypical, isolated Herbig Ae stars HD 31648 (MWC 480) and HD 163296 over five epochs separated by timescales ranging from days to months. Each spectrum spans over a wide wavelength range covering from 310 to 2475 nm. We have monitored the continuum excess in the Balmer region of the spectra and the luminosity of 12 ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared spectral lines that are commonly used as accretion tracers for T Tauri stars. The observed strengths of the Balmer excesses have been reproduced from a magnetospheric accretion shock model, providing a mean mass accretion rate of 1.11 × 10-7 and 4.50 × 10-7 Mʘyr-1 for HD 31648 and HD 163296, respectively. Accretion rate variations are observed, being more pronounced for HD 31648 (up to 0.5 dex). However, from the comparison with previous results it is found that the accretion rate of HD 163296 has increased by more than 1 dex, on a timescale of ∼15 yr. Averaged accretion luminosities derived from the Balmer excess are consistent with the ones inferred from the empirical calibrations with the emission line luminosities, indicating that those can be extrapolated to HAe stars. In spite of that, the accretion rate variations do not generally coincide with those estimated from the line luminosities, suggesting that the empirical calibrations are not useful to accurately quantify accretion rate variability, This work are supported by AYA 2011-26202 and RYC-2011-07920.

The evolution of young massive protoplanetary disks toward planetary systems is expected to correspond to structural changes in observational appearance, which includes the formation of gaps and the depletion of dust and gas. Aims. A special group of disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars do not show prominent silicate emission features, although they still bear signs of flaring disks, the presence of gas, and small grains. We focus our attention on four key Herbig Ae/Be stars to understand the structural properties responsible for the absence of silicate feature emission. Methods. We investigate Q- and N-band images taken with Subaru/COMICS, Gemini South/T-ReCS, and VLT/VISIR. We perform radiative transfer modeling to examine the radial distribution of dust and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Our solutions require a separation of inner- and outer- disks by a large gap. From this, we characterize the radial density structure of dust and PAHs in the disk. Results. The inner edge of the outer disk has a high surface brightness and a typical temperature between _100–150 K and therefore, dominates the emission in the Q-band. All four disks are characterized by large gaps.We derive radii of the inner edge of the outer disk of AU for HD97048, HD169142, HD135344 B, and Oph IRS 48, respectively. For HD 97048 this is the first detection of a disk gap. The large gaps deplete the entire population of silicate particles with temperatures suitable for prominent midinfrared feature emission, while small carbonaceous grains and PAHs can still show prominent emission at mid-infrared wavelengths. The continuum emission in the N-band is not due to emission in the wings of PAHs. This continuum emission can be due to very small grains or to thermal emission from the inner disk. We find that PAH emission is not always dominated by PAHs on the surface of the outer disk. Conclusions. The absence of silicate emission features is due to the presence of large gaps in the critical temperature regime. Many, if not all Herbig disks with spectral energy distribution classification “group I”, are disks with large gaps and can be characterized as (pre-) transitional. An evolutionary path from the observed group I to the observed group II sources seems no longer likely. Dans ce travail de thèse, nous analysons pour la première fois à l'aide de la technique d'imagerie doppler, les raies photosphériques de deux étoiles T Ttauri à faibles raies d'émission, pour cartographier leur brillance de surface et localiser ainsi les inhomogenéités en température, qui signent la présence de forts champs magnétiques. Pour ce faire, nous avons développé une méthode numerique fondée sur la paramétrisation de taches, dont les caractéristiques sont déterminées lors de la minimisation, de type moindres carrés, des différences entre les modèles de raie calculés et l'ensemble des raies (issues de divers éléments chimiques) observées à plusieurs phases rotationnelles. Nous étudions le type et l'amplitude de déformations engendrées par la présence de taches froides, ce qui nous permet d'en déduire les conditions optimales d'application de l'imagerie doppler. Nous etudions par ailleurs les limitations intrinséques de cette technique déterminées par la qualité des données (résolution instrumentale et rapport signal sur bruit). L'application à des étoiles T Tauri, jeunes étoiles en fin de formation, similaires au soleil dans sa jeunesse, nous permet de mettre en évidence la présence de larges taches froides, préférentiellement localisées aux latitudes élevées. La position de ces taches suggère une géometrie de type dipolaire pour le champ magnétique. Seule une étude exhaustive pourra déterminer si cette géometrie est commune à toute cette classe d'étoiles, ou si elle est liée à des caractéristiques particulières (fort taux de rotation 70km/s ; 80 km/s). cette réponse est cruciale pour déterminer l'origine du champ magnétique : fossile, engendré par un mecanisme particulier de type dynamo, peut-etre les deux à la fois. L'application future de cette technique aux etoiles T Tauri classiques, supposées etre entourées d'un disque d'accrétion, sera determinante pour comprendre l'interaction entre l'environnement circumstellaire et l'objet central., pas de résumé

Young low-mass accreting stars (classical T Tauri stars; CTTSs) possess strong magnetic fields that are responsible for the regulation of the accretion and outflow processes, and the confinement and heating of coronal plasma. Understanding the physics of CTTS magnetospheres and of their interaction with circumstellar disks can elucidate the history and evolution of our own Sun and Solar System, at the stage when planets were being formed. In June 2009 we have conducted an extensive multi-wavelength observing campaign of V2129 Oph, a K5 CTTS in the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud, with the goal of obtaining a synoptic view of its photosphere, magnetic field, coronal plasma, and of its accretion spot(s) and funnel flow(s). We here report on the X-ray emission, as observed by the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG). High-density plasma, presumably from the accretion shock, is responsible for the soft X-ray emission, at least during the first half of the observation. The X-ray emission from both the coronal plasma (T˜20MK) and the cooler and denser material from the accretion spot (T˜3MK) is observed to vary between the first and second half of the observation. From the high-resolution X-ray spectra we constrain the emission measure of the two components and the density of the cool plasma. Finally we interpret the time variability of the cool plasma component in terms of stellar rotation and the time-changing viewing angle of the accretion stream, as constrained by simultaneous optical observations.

To study the accretion shocks of classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) we obtained high-resolution X-ray spectra of two CTTS, V2129 Oph and V4046 Sgr, to look for phase-resolved X-ray signatures of shock-heated plasma. The 200 ks Chandra/HETGS observation of V2129 Oph (a 1.35 M sun star, rotating in 6.5 d) covered 0.5 stellar rotation. The 360 ks XMM/RGS observation of V4046 Sgr (a binary system, with two 0.9 M sun components, synchronously rotating in 2.42 d) monitored 2.2 system rotations. The stellar photosphere, magnetic field, and accretion geometry of both stars were constrained by quasi-simultaneous optical monitoring (photometry, spectroscopy, and spectropolarimetry). The cool plasma component of V2129 Oph varies, with high density plasma and high EM observed during the first observing segment, and lower density and lower EM observed during the second. The emission lines, produced by the high density cool plasma of V4046 Sgr, display periodic flux variations with a period of half the system rotational period. Our results confirm that the dense cool plasma in CTTS is material heated in the accretion shock, and that the observed X-ray variability can be explained in terms different viewing angles at different rotational phases of the accretion-shock region.
