The reason for this review is the lack of data on the management of physical abused children in Africa. The primary goal of the first part is to outline the management of physical child abuse in (South) Africa and provide suggestions for other governments in Africa on which to base their management of physical child abuse, at both governmental and hospital management level. The main aim of the second part is to outline the extent of the problem as seen at the Red Cross Memorial Children's Hospital (RCH) in Cape Town.The National Library of Medicine's PubMed database was searched for articles specifically about the management of physical child abuse. Hospital data were analysed in two phases: one addressed various types of assault in order to assess the number of patients admitted to the trauma unit of RCH between 1991 and 2009, and the other to identify all children with suspected non-accidental injury (NAI) presenting to the trauma unit at RCH from January 2008 until December 2010.Information on physical abuse of children in Africa in the English scientific literature remains disappointing with only two articles focusing on its management. RCH data for the period 1991-2009 recorded a total number of 6415 children hospitalised with injuries following assault, who accounted for 4.2% of all trauma admissions. Types of abuse included assault with a blunt or sharp instrument, rape/sexual assault and human bite wounds. Over the last 2 decades, there has been a minor decline in the number of cases of severe abuse requiring admission; admissions for other injuries have remained stable. More detailed analysis of hospital data for 2008-2010, found that boys were far more commonly assaulted than girls (70.5% vs 29.5%). Physical abuse appeared to be the most common cause of abuse; 89.9% of all boys and 60.5% of all girls presented after physical abuse.In order to eradicate child abuse, awareness of it as to be promoted in the community at large. Because the types of child abuse vary between countries, each requires its own research in order to develop a policy tailored to their particular requirements. In summary, an increased focus on the prevention of violence against children is urgently needed in order to curb the increasing trend of assaults on children. As the causes and risk factors for violence against children vary, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral co-operation and collaboration will be required. It is hoped that this report will help raise awareness among health-care practitioners of NAI and its complexities.

Statistical models are being applied in the valuation of different types of real estate. This article discusses Ridge estimators for the valuation of single family residences in the presence of multicollinearity (ill-conditioned data). We distinguish between the prediction case, where the purpose is to estimate the selling price, and the explanation (or control) case, where the purpose is to infer the response in selling price from changes in regressor values, in particular property characteristics. The economic inferences from the latter ease are particularly interesting.

The paper presents a multivariate analysis of single-family-home sales data to investigate differences in performance among real estate firms. The decision considered is which firm should be chosen by a homeowner selling through an agent. Factor analysis of property features was used to obtain orthogonal dimensions. This permitted analysis of the influence of other variables with only limited multicollinearity. Broker effects on listing and selling price were studied through regression analysis with dummy variables and slope shifters on the factors and through analysis of variance on the regression residuals after removal of house characteristics. A number of performance differences of consequence for the choice of selling agent were observed. Some of the reasons for these differences are discussed.

The majority of communities in the Northwest Territories lack the water, sewage, and garbage facilities available in southern Canada. Recently, the Government of the Northwest Territories proposed a multimillion dollar ten-year program to upgrade the water and sanitation services of the sixty-odd communities under its jurisdiction. In this paper, which is a first report on an ongoing project to upgrade the sanitary conditions of settlements in the Northwest Territories, we develop a methodology whereby the cost of the alternative water, sewage, and garbage systems for each community can be determined, compared, and evaluated. This analysis defines the level of service to be recommended in each community.Cost data for sanitary installations in the north are generally not available and therefore need to be estimated. The costs associated with alternative systems are assessed as a function of some one hundred variables, including population, demand for water, distance to the water source, topography, terrain, weather conditions, severity of climate, existence of roads, availability and cost of gravel, general remoteness of the community, freight rates, etc.The basis for comparison of the various level of service alternatives is the net present value of the investment required over the duration of the program, including capital as well as operating expenditures. Actual data for some forty-five communities are used in the calculations.

In the 1967 Harvard-Cornell football game, Harvard was ahead 14–0 late in the game when Cornell scored two touchdowns. On both occasions, Cornell tried and failed on the two-point conversion attempt and lost the game 14–12. Postgame arguments were divided on the merits of Cornell's strategy. For this frequently occurring scenario in college football, we derive a maximum expected utility decision rule for the decision of kicking versus running/passing based on the relative utility of a win, a tie, or a loss and the probabilities of success with a kick as opposed to a run/pass.

The Government of Alberta has undertaken a study to determine the feasibility of supplying natural gas to rural areas of the Province not currently served. The study covers various aspects relevant to the development of an overall plan for rural gasification, but the emphasis is on major factors affecting the economic viability of the venture. We discuss in this paper one segment of the study—the problem of determining the demand for natural gas in rural areas. Three separate demand schedules, each based on a different methodology but using common data obtained from a survey of rural residents, are estimated. The three demand schedules are analysed and compared in an attempt to establish an overall demand curve for natural gas in rural Alberta. The price elasticity of demand for natural gas is determined from the demand function obtained.

Management Science is not unique to any particular country or set of countries. It is comprised of processes, techniques and tools that are potentially applicable to problems found in a wide range of social and economic systems. The scope and style of management science practices vary from country to country. In Canada the community of Operational Research/Management Science (OR/MS) practitioners has grown to approximately 1200, according to the membership lists of professional societies. The time has come to take stock. It is with this goal in mind that we accepted the challenge of editing and contributing to Management Science in Canada.

Attention is given to the improvements in mathematical modeling, and the emerging role of computer-related technology, in airframe structural technology advancements related to the engine/airframe integration requirements of such recent designs as the 747 airliner's JT9D turbofan engine nacelle. Also noted are investigation results concerning propulsion system flight loads and their influence on thrust-specific fuel consumption deterioration, which has been addressed through the development of the novel structural concept of the 'load-carrying core cowl' engine nacelle structure. Analytical studies on integrated system vibration include low frequency, nonsynchronous vibration analyses of large, high bypass turbofan engines that have been conducted by means of three-dimensional integrated finite element models.
