1. Application of generalized aurora computed tomography to the EISCAT_3D project

Abstract

EISCAT_3D is a project to build a multi-site phased-array incoherent scatter radar system in northern Fenno-Scandinavia. We demonstrate via numerical simulation how useful monochromatic images taken by a multi-point imager network are for auroral research in the EISCAT_3D project. We apply the generalized aurora computed tomography (G-ACT) method to modelled observational data from real instruments, such as the Auroral Large Imaging System (ALIS) and the EISCAT_3D radar. G-ACT is a method for reconstructing the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of auroral emissions and ionospheric electron density (corresponding to the horizontal two-dimensional (2D) distribution of energy spectra of precipitating electrons) from multi-instrument data. It is assumed that the EISCAT_3D radar scans an area of 0.8° in geographic latitude and 3° in longitude at an altitude of 130 km with 10 × 10 beams from the radar core site at Skibotn (69.35° N, 20.37° E). Two neighboring discrete arcs are assumed to appear in the observation region of the EISCAT_3D radar. The reconstruction results from G-ACT are compared with those from the normal ACT as well as the ionospheric electron density from the radar. It is found that G-ACT can interpolate the ionospheric electron density at a much higher spatial resolution than that observed by the EISCAT_3D radar. Furthermore, the multiple arcs reconstructed by G-ACT are more precise than those by ACT. In particular, underestimation of the ionospheric electron density and precipitating electrons' energy fluxes inside the arcs is significantly improved by G-ACT including the EISCAT_3D data. Even when the ACT reconstruction is difficult due to the unsuitable locations of the imager sites relative to the discrete arcs and/or a small number of available images, G-ACT allows us to obtain better reconstruction results.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a simultaneous measurement method for fast neutron energy spectra and tritium production rates within mixed radiation fields using a single crystal chemical vapour deposition diamond detector combined with a lithium fluoride (LiF) foil. The method involves the separation of pulses with rectangular shapes and the determination of the depth position within the single crystal diamond (SCD) struck by fast neutrons or nuclear reaction products including recoil tritons from the LiF foil based on pulse width, extracting pulse events occurred at the specific bulk region and the surface region of the SCD. Subsequently, unfolding techniques were employed to analyse the energy deposition spectrum of pulses at the specific bulk region which are induced only by fast neutrons, allowing the deduction of the fast neutron energy spectrum. To evaluate the tritium production rate, the energy deposition spectrum of pulses from events occurring at the SCD surface facing the LiF foil was analysed. By estimating the energy deposition spectrum solely induced by fast neutrons striking the SCD surface and subtracting it from the energy deposition spectrum of events at the SCD surface, the contribution of energetic ions, such as recoil tritons generated by the ^6 Li(n, α ) ^3 H reaction in the LiF foil, was determined. The fast neutron flux and tritium production rate obtained through this study were consistent with particle transport calculations, demonstrating the successful development of a method suitable for performance testing of fusion reactor blankets.

3. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the subserosal layer dissection technique in dogs: 34 cases (2015-2021)

Abstract

To describe a standardised subserosal layer dissection technique and evaluate its outcomes in canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Medical records of dogs undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the standardised subserosal layer dissection technique for the treatment of cholecystolithiasis, cholecystitis, and gall bladder mucocele at a single veterinary hospital from January 2015 to September 2021 were extracted. Operative time, subserosal layer dissection achievement rate, open conversion rate, and complication rate were evaluated.Thirty-four dogs were included. The most common preoperative diagnosis was cholecystolithiasis (n=29). Operative time was 190 minutes (range: 110 to 330 minutes). Subserosal layer dissection of more than 90% of the gall bladder bed was achieved in 27 (79%) dogs. Conversion to open surgery was required in three (8.8%) dogs. There were no cases of intraoperative bleeding, bile duct injury, or reoperation.This study showed that laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the standardised subserosal layer dissection technique could be performed successfully in dogs. Future prospective clinical studies are needed to determine safety and effectiveness of this technique compared to standard techniques.

Operation of a Meteor Radar (MWR) at Eureka, Ellesmere Island (80° N, 86° W) began in February 2006: this is the location of the Polar Environmental and Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL), operated by the "Canadian Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Change" (CANDAC). The first 36 months of tidal wind data (82–97 km) are here combined with contemporaneous tides from the Meteor Radar (MWR) at Adventdalen, Svalbard (78° N, 16° E), to provide the first significant evidence for interannual variability (IAV) of the High Arctic's diurnal and semidiurnal migrating (MT) and non-migrating tides (NMT). The three-year monthly means for both diurnal (DT) and semi-diurnal (SDT) winds demonstrate significantly different amplitudes and phases at Eureka and Svalbard. Typically the summer-maximizing DT is much larger (~24 m s−1 at 97 km) at Eureka, while the Svalbard tide (5–24 m s−1 at 97 km)) is almost linear (north-south) rather than circular. Interannual variations are smallest in the summer and autumn months. The High Arctic SDT has maxima centred on August/September, followed in size by the winter features; and is much larger at Svalbard (24 m s−1 at 97 km, versus 14–18 m s−1 in central Canada). Depending on the location, the IAV are largest in spring/winter (Eureka) and summer/autumn (Svalbard). Fitting of wave-numbers for the migrating and non-migrating tides (MT, NMT) determines dominant tides for each month and height. Existence of NMT is consistent with nonlinear interactions between migrating tides and (quasi) stationary planetary wave (SPW) S=1 (SPW1). For the diurnal oscillation, NMT s=0 for the east-west (EW) wind component dominates (largest tide) in the late autumn and winter (November–February); and s=+2 is frequently seen in the north-south (NS) wind component for the same months. The semi-diurnal oscillation's NMT s=+1 dominates from March to June/July. There are patches of s=+3 and +1, in the late fall-winter. These wave numbers are also consistent with SPW1-MT interactions. Comparisons for 2007 of the observed DT and SDT at 78–80° N, with those within the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model Data Assimilation System CMAM-DAS, are a major feature of this paper. The diurnal tides for the two locations have important similarities as observed and modeled, with seasonal maxima in the mesosphere from April to October, and similar phases with long/evanescent wavelengths. However, differences are also significant: observed Eureka amplitudes are generally larger than the model; and at Svalbard the modeled tide is classically circular, rather than anomalous. For the semi-diurnal tide, the amplitudes and phases differ markedly between Eureka and Svalbard for both MWR-radar data and CMAM-DAS data. The seasonal variations from observed and modeled archives also differ at each location. Tidal NMT-amplitudes and wave-numbers for the model differ substantially from observations.

The first 36 months of wind data (82–97 km) are here combined with contemporaneous winds from the Meteor Wind Radar at Adventdalen, Svalbard (78° N, 16° E), to provide the first evidence for substantial interannual variability (IAV) of longitudinally spaced observations of mean/background winds and waves at such High Arctic latitudes. The influences of "Sudden Stratospheric Warmings" (SSW) are also apparent. Monthly meridional (north-south, NS) 3-year means for each location/radar demonstrate that winds (82–97 km) differ significantly between Canada and Norway, with winter-equinox values generally northward over Eureka and southward over Svalbard. Using January 2008 as case study, these oppositely directed meridional winds are related to mean positions of the Arctic mesospheric vortex. The vortex is from the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model, with its Data Assimilation System (CMAM-DAS). The characteristics of "Sudden stratospheric Warmings" SSW in each of the three winters are noted, as well as their uniquely distinctive short-term mesospheric wind disturbances. Comparisons of the mean winds over 36 months at 78 and 80° N, with those within CMAM-DAS, are featured. E.g. for 2007, while both monthly mean EW and NS winds from CMAM/radar are quite similar over Eureka (82–88 km), the modeled autumn-winter NS winds over Svalbard (73–88 km) differ significantly from observations. The latter are southward, and the modeled winds over Svalbard are predominately northward. The mean positions of the winter polar vortex are related to these differences.

Abstract

Aurora Computed Tomography (ACT) is a method for retrieving the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution of the volume emission rate from monochromatic auroral images obtained simultaneously by a multi-point camera network. We extend this method to a Generalized-Aurora Computed Tomography (G-ACT) that reconstructs the energy and spatial distributions of precipitating electrons from multi-instrument data, such as ionospheric electron density from incoherent scatter radar, cosmic noise absorption (CNA) from imaging riometers, as well as the auroral images. The purpose of this paper is to describe the reconstruction algorithm involved in this method and to test its feasibility by numerical simulation. Based on a Bayesian model with prior information as the smoothness of the electron energy spectra, the inverse problem is formulated as a maximization of posterior probability. The relative weighting of each instrument data is determined by the cross-validation method. We apply this method to the simulated data from real instruments, the Auroral Large Imaging System (ALIS), the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) radar at Tromsø, and the Imaging Riometer for Ionospheric Study (IRIS) at Kilpisjärvi. The results indicate that the differential flux of the precipitating electrons is well reconstructed from the ALIS images for the low-noise cases. Furthermore, we demonstrate in a case study that the ionospheric electron density from the EISCAT radar is useful for improving the reconstructed electron flux. On the other hand, the incorporation of CNA data into this method is difficult at this stage, because the extension of energy range to higher energy causes a difficulty in the reconstruction of the low-energy electron flux. Nevertheless, we expect that this method may be useful in analyzing multi-instrument data and, in particular, 3-D data, which will be obtained in the upcoming EISCAT_3D.

Operation of a Meteor Radar at Eureka, Ellesmere Island (80° N, 86° W) began in February 2006. The first 12 months of wind data (82–97 km) are combined with winds from the Adventdalen, Svalbard Island (78° N, 16° E) Meteor Radar to provide the first contemporaneous longitudinally spaced observations of mean winds, tides and planetary waves at such high Arctic latitudes. Unique polar information on diurnal non-migrating tides (NMT) is provided, as well as complementary information to that existing for the Antarctic on the semidiurnal NMT. Zonal and meridional monthly mean winds differed significantly between Canada and Norway, indicating the influence of stationary planetary waves (SPW) in the Arctic mesopause region. Both diurnal (D) and semi-diurnal (SD) winds also demonstrated significantly different magnitudes at Eureka and Svalbard. Typically the D tide was larger at Eureka and the SD tide was larger at Svalbard. Tidal amplitudes in the Arctic were also generally larger than expected from extrapolation of high mid-latitude data. For example time-sequences from ~90 km showed D wind oscillations at Eureka of 30 m/s in February–March, and four day bursts of SD winds at Svalbard reached 40 m/s in June 2006. Fitting of wave numbers for the migrating and non-migrating tides (MT, NMT) successfully determines dominant tides for each month and height. For the diurnal tide, NMT with s=0, +2 (westward) dominate in non-summer months, while for the semi-diurnal tide NMT with s=+1, +3 occur most often during equinoctial or early summer months. These wave numbers are consistent with stationary planetary wave (SPW)-tidal interactions. Assessment of the global topographic forcing and atmospheric propagation of the SPW (S=1, 2) suggests these winter waves of the Northern Hemisphere are associated with the 78–80° N diurnal NMT, but that the SPW of the Southern Hemisphere winter have little influence on the summer Arctic tidal fields. In contrast the large SPW and NMT of the Arctic winter may be associated, consistent with Antarctic observations, with the observed occurrence of the semidiurnal NMT in the Antarctic summer.

Abstract

As a part of the project "Atmospheric Wave Influences upon the Winter Polar Vortices (0–100 km)" of the CAWSES program, data from meteor and Medium Frequency radars at 12 locations and MetO (UK Meteorological Office) global assimilated fields have been analyzed for the first campaign during the Northern Hemispheric winter of 2004/05. The stratospheric state has been described using the conventional zonal mean parameters as well as Q-diagnostic, which allows consideration of the longitudinal variability. The stratosphere was cold during winter of 2004/05, and the polar vortex was relatively strong during most of the winter with relatively weak disturbances occurring at the end of December and the end of January. For this winter the strongest deformation with the splitting of the polar vortex in the lower stratosphere was observed at the end of February. Here the results show strong latitudinal and longitudinal differences that are evident in the stratospheric and mesospheric data sets at different stations. Eastward winds are weaker and oscillations with planetary wave periods have smaller amplitudes at more poleward stations. Accordingly, the occurrence, time and magnitude of the observed reversal of the zonal mesospheric winds associated with stratospheric disturbances depend on the local stratospheric conditions. In general, compared to previous years, the winter of 2004/05 could be characterized by weak planetary wave activity at stratospheric and mesospheric heights.

Abstract

The shape of the electron energy distribution has long been a central question in the field of high-frequency radio-induced optical emission experiments. This report presents estimates of the electron energy distribution function, fe(E), from 0 to 60 eV, based on optical multi-wavelength (6300, 5577, 8446, 4278Å) data and 930-MHz incoherent scatter radar measurements of ion temperature, electron temperature and electron concentration. According to our estimate, the electron energy distribution has a depression at around 2 eV, probably caused by electron excitation of vibrational states in N2, and a high energy tail that is clearly supra-thermal. The temporal evolution of the emissions indicates that the electron temperature still plays an important role in providing electrons with energies close to 2 eV. At the higher energies the electron energy distribution has a non-thermal tail. Keywords. Active experiments; Ionosphere atmosphere interaction; Ionospheric physics

Abstract

Fading times of radar echoes from underdense meteor trails in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere are commonly used to determine ambipolar diffusivities and hence ambient temperature. Diffusivities are generally expected to increase exponentially with height through the region from which the meteor trail echoes are obtained, viz., typically 70-110km altitude for a ~30-MHz radar. In practice, however, this is more the exception: unexpectedly large diffusivities are obtained in the lower part of the regime, and unexpectedly low values are obtained in the upper part; only in the few kilometres on either side of the maximum in echo occurrence (viz., 90km for a 30-MHz radar) does the diffusivity profile behave as expected. Hall (2002) hypothesised that neutral turbulence might be enhancing expansion of the meteor trail in the lower part of the regime. In this communication, due to results only available since the publication of Hall's suggestion, we are able to refute the hypothesis.

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulation for radiation therapy needs a computational model of patient geometry. Voxel model has been so far used for this purpose. However, tetrahedral model is more suitable for representing organ’s shape. In this paper, we report on the development of tetrahedral organ model in Geant4 based particle therapy system simulation framework (PTSIM). Several organ geometries have been successfully constructed with the tetrahedral model in PTSIM. The performance in the simulation is discussed by comparing the tetrahedral model with the voxel model.

Abstract

At J-PARC's pulsed spallation neutron source, a cryogenic hydrogen system has been operated to provide liquid para-hydrogen (20K and 1.5 MPa) to the moderators since 2008. Typical operating period of the cryogenic hydrogen system was approximately 3 months continuously. However, the pressure differences between No.1, No.2 heat exchangers (HXs) and an adsorber (ADS) in the helium refrigerator had begun to increase rapidly since the beginning of 2015, the refrigerator could not be operated continuously. The impurity in the refrigerator was measured by newly introduced quadrat mass spectrometer, but no significant impurities was observed. We suspected the oil contamination from the helium compressor, as it caused performance degradation of the cryogenic system in other facilities, such as RIKEN, CERN, etc. In the summer outage in 2016, we cleaned the HXs with Freon to remove the oil contamination, and replaced the activate charcoals of ADS and oil separator (OS-5). As a result, the performance of the helium refrigerator was recovered completely.

Abstract

We tested the ability of two separate nuclear reaction models, the binary cascade and JQMD (Jaeri version of Quantum Molecular Dynamics), to predict the dose distribution in carbon-ion radiotherapy. This was done by use of a realistic simulation of the experimental irradiation of a water target. Comparison with measurement shows that the binary cascade model does a good job reproducing the spread-out Bragg peak in depth-dose distributions in water irradiated with a 290 MeV/u (per nucleon) beam. However, it significantly overestimates the peak dose for a 400 MeV/u beam. JQMD underestimates the overall dose because of a tendency to break a nucleus into lower-Z fragments than does the binary cascade model. As far as shape of the dose distribution is concerned, JQMD shows fairly good agreement with measurement for both beam energies of 290 and 400 MeV/u, which favors JQMD over the binary cascade model for the calculation of the relative dose distribution in treatment planning.

22. A note on the semidiurnal non-migrating tide at polar latitudes

Abstract

In the Antarctic upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere around 90 km, meteor radar observations at the South Pole have detected a significant semidiurnal wind component in summer which is found to be non-migrating with zonal wavenumber s = 1. It has been surmised that this component might possibly be excited through the non-linear interaction of the migrating semidiurnal tide with stationary planetary waves with zonal wavenumber s = 1 prevailing at stratospheric heights. The Kyushu University GCM has been successful in elucidating very unambiguously this conjecture. In the present paper, linearized steady tidal modeling is carried out in this connection to reproduce, by a fairly simplified but explicit model, trans-equatorial propagation of non-migrating semidiurnal tide forced in the opposite winter hemisphere and to compare latitudinal structures of migrating and non-linearly excited intermittent tides in view of polar latitudes where non-migrating tide tends to dominate over migrating tide. It is also shown that the re-analysis meteorological data for almost 10 years clearly supports the well-known N-S asymmetry in stationary planetary wave activity in winter polar stratospheric regions, possibly due to the difference in surface topography between two hemispheres. We suggest that there might be significant asymmetry in the summertime enhancement of semidiurnal non-migrating tide between both polar regions. This phenomenon may be in a context similar with the N-S asymmetry of gravity wave activity in the polar regions, possibly giving rise to N-S disparity of cold summertime mesopause temperature. Clarification awaits intensive bi-polar studies by coordinated radar and optical observations which are running both in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Abstract

We employ observations obtained from a meteor wind radar to derive ambipolar diffusion coefficients, neutral temperatures, temperature gradients and, subsequently, Brunt-Väisälä frequencies at an altitude of 90 km over Svalbard (78°N, 16°E). The derived values showed a good agreement with independent measurements at each step of the analysis. Current atmospheric models are based on sparse data obtained at such high latitude, so these results represent a viable alternative for incorporating in subsequent studies of atmospheric dynamics, particularly if the derived monthly variabilities are included. The Brunt-Väisälä frequencies are then combined with wind shear measurements to estimate horizontally averaged gradient Richardson Numbers (Ri). We find Ri to be consistently larger in summer than winter due to wind shears being similarly larger in winter and augmented by the inverse seasonal variation in Brunt-Väisälä frequency. These seasonal variations result in Ri indicative of dynamic stability in summer and instability in winter. The variabilities in wind shear and Brunt-Väisälä frequency are then included to—albeit more qualitatively—illustrate the distribution between stability and static and dynamic instabilities as a function of season, using a novel portrayal pioneered by Zink and Vincent (J. Geophys. Res., 109, doi:10.1029/2003JD003992, 2004). The resulting picture is discussed in the framework of current conceptions of distribution of turbulent energy dissipation with height and season and of current opinion of the mesopause structure at 78°N.

Abstract

A new silicon vertex detector for the Belle experiment has been in operation at the high-luminosity asymmetric energy electron–positron collider KEKB since October 2003. It provides a larger polar angle acceptance, a better vertex resolution and a higher radiation tolerance than the previous one. The obtained performances indicate that the SVD2 works reliably, in very good agreement with expectations.

Abstract

The old silicon vertex detector (SVD1) of the Belle detector, operating at the high-luminosity asymmetric energy e+e− collider KEKB, was replaced by an upgraded version (SVD2) in 2003. The new detector has modified geometry and redesigned readout electronics, providing a larger polar angle acceptance, better vertex resolution, improved radiation hardness and reduced dead time. The operation of the detector started successfully in October 2003. The basic concepts of the SVD2 design as well as its performance after 10 months of data taking are described in this paper.

Abstract

Kinetic energy dissipation rates for the auroral MLT have been obtained from the Tromso middle frequency radar (MFR) and compared with simultaneous measurements of neutral wind-shears obtained from the Nippon/Norway Tromso meteor radar (NTMR). Since wind-shears can drive dynamic instabilities which in turn result in turbulent dissipation of kinetic energy, we would expect these parameters to be correlated, and this is indeed the case. Having established this correlation we quantitatively combine the results from each radar to estimate the turbulent diffusion coefficient for momentum; considering the tentative nature of this approach, we find the agreement with previous estimates to be surprisingly good.

Abstract

We have developed a new data acquisition system (DAQ) utilizing PC farms for the upgraded silicon vertex detector (SVD2) in the Belle experiment at the KEKB factory. The SVD upgrade will increase the number of readout channels by about 50% to 110592. The maximum trigger rate is also expected to rise to 1.0kHz due to the increasing beam intensity from KEKB. To manage the increased dataflow, we have constructed the DAQ system with twelve Linux PCs, each of which is directly connected to three flash AD converter boards through PCI data I/O boards. The advantages of using the PCs include the ease of software maintenance, market availability of hardware when replacements are needed, scalability and much improved processing speed. In order to decrease the data transfer load to the data storage system, we have developed data sparsification algorithms that calculate pedestal and noise, find particle hit channels and thus reduce the data down to 5% of the original volume. We have measured the data processing speed of the system at various read-out channel occupancy levels. The system is able to process data at a 1.3kHz trigger rate with 5% occupancy and will thus be able to handle the anticipated 1.0kHz trigger rate.

Abstract

During the summer shutdown of 2003, the new silicon vertex detector SVD2 was installed in Belle at the KEKB factory and started to take data in October 2003. It provides important improvements in the tracking capabilities and adds new trigger functionality. In addition, a new hardware trigger Level 1.5 was designed and installed that takes advantage of the digitized SVD hit data. The improvement in the Belle trigger system will be important to deal with the increasing luminosity and higher beam currents of the KEKB factory.

Abstract

The Charge Coupled Device (CCD) based vertex detector is being studied for the Joint Linear Collider (JLC) project. One of the main goals is the operation of CCDs at near-room temperature in order to reduce the amount of materials between the interaction points and outer detectors, and minimize the thermal distortion of CCD wafers. In this paper, we describe some of the aspects about the operation at near-room temperature with the results of radiation immunity and spatial resolution studies for the JLC project.

Abstract

We have searched for a T/CP violation signature arising from an electric dipole form factor (d_tau) of the tau lepton in the e+e- -> tau+tau- reaction. Using an optimal observable method for 29.5 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider at sqrt{s}=10.58 GeV, we obtained the preliminary result Re(d_tau) = (1.15 +- 1.70) x 10^{-17} ecm and Im(d_tau) = (-0.83 +- 0.86) x 10^{-17} ecm for the real and imaginary parts of d_tau, respectively, and set the 95% confidence level limits -2.2 < Re(d_tau) < 4.5 (10^{-17} ecm) and -2.5 < Im(d_tau) < 0.8 (10^{-17} ecm)., Invited talk at the Seventh International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics (TAU02), Santa Cruz, Ca, USA, Sept 2002, 8 pages, LaTeX, 19 eps figures

Abstract

We report on a study of $\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{(*) 0} \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays using 29.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB storage ring. Making no assumptions about the intermediate mechanism, the branching fractions for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{* 0} \pi^+ \pi^-$ are determined to be $(8.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.5) \times 10^{-4} $ and $ (6.2 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.8) \times 10^{-4}$ respectively. An analysis of $\bar{B^{0}} \to D^{0} \pi^+ \pi^-$ candidates yields to the first observation of the color-suppressed hadronic decay $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \rho^0$ with the branching fraction $(2.9 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-4}$. We measure the ratio of branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^0 \rho^0) / {\mathcal B}(\bar{B^0} \to D^0 \omega)$ = 1.6 $\pm$ 0.8.

Abstract

We present measurements of CP-violating parameters in $B^0(\bar{B}{}^0) \to \eta^\prime K_S^0$ and $B^{\pm} \to \eta' K^{\pm}$ decays based on a 41.8 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+} e^{-}$ collider. We fully reconstruct one neutral $B$ meson as a $B^0(\bar{B}{}^0) \to \eta^\prime K_S^0$ CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying $B$ from its decay products. From the distribution of time intervals between pairs of $B$ meson decay points, we obtain the CP-violating asymmetry parameters ${\mathcal S}_{\eta^\prime K_S^0} = 0.28\pm0.55(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.08}(syst)$, and ${\mathcal A}_{\eta^\prime K_S^0} = 0.13\pm0.32(stat)^{+0.09}_{-0.06}(syst)$. We also reconstruct charged $B^{\pm} \to \eta^\prime K^{\pm}$ decays and determine a direct-CP violating asymmetry value of ${\mathcal A}_{\eta^\prime K^\pm}=(-1.5\pm7.0(stat)\pm0.9(syst))%$.

Abstract

The B -> D^{(*)} K^- K^{(*)0} decays have been observed for the first time. The branching fractions of the B -> D^{(*)} K^- K^{(*)0} decay modes are measured. Significant signals are found for the B -> D^{(*)} K^- K^{*0} and B^- -> D^0 K^- K^0_S decay modes. The invariant mass and polarization distributions for the K^-K^{*0} and K^-K^0_S subsystems have been studied. For the K^-K^{*0} sybsystem these distributions agree well with those expected for two-body B -> D^{(*)} a_1^-(1260) decays, with a_1^-(1260) -> K^- K^{*0}. The analysis was done using 29.4 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the e^+ e^- asymmetric collider KEKB.

Abstract

This paper describes a study of B meson decays to the pseudoscalar-vector final state \rho\pi using 31.9\times 10^6 B\bar{B} events collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. The branching fractions B(B^+ \to \rho^0\pi^+) = (8.0^{+2.3+0.7}_{-2.0-0.7}) \times 10^{-6} and B(B^0 -> \rho^{+-} \pi^{-+}) = (20.8^{+6.0+2.8}_{-6.3-3.1}) \times 10^{-6} are obtained. In addition, a 90% confidence level upper limit of B(B^0 \to \rho^0\pi^0) < 5.3 \times 10^{-6}is reported.

Abstract

The production of the \chi_{c2} charmonium state in two-photon collisions has been measured with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. A clear signal for \chi_{c2} --> \gamma J/\psi, J/\psi --> l^+l^- is observed in a 32.6fb^{-1} data sample accumulated at center-of-mass energies near 10.6GeV, and the product of its two-photon decay width and branching fraction is determined to be \Gamma_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2})B(\chi_{c2} --> \gamma J/\psi) B(J/\psi --> l^+l^-)= 13.5 +/- 1.3(stat.) +/- 1.1(syst.)eV., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb−1 data sample recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+e− storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν decay to the kinematic limit at which the D ∗+ is at rest with respect to the B 0 , we extract the product of |Vcb| with the normalization of the decay form factor F(1), |Vcb|F(1)=(3.54±0.19±0.18)×10−2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. A value of |Vcb|=(3.88±0.21±0.20±0.19)×10−2 is obtained using a theoretical calculation of F(1), where the third error is due to the theoretical uncertainty in the value of F(1). The branching fraction B ( B 0 →D ∗+ e − ν ) is measured to be (4.59±0.23±0.40)×10−2.

Abstract

We report measurements for two-body charmless B decays with an eta' meson in the final state. Using 11.1X10^6 BBbar pairs collected with the Belle detector, we find BF(B^+ ->eta'K^+)=(79^+12_-11 +-9)x10^-6 and BF(B^0 -> eta'K^0)=(55^+19_-16 +-8)x10^-6, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. No signal is observed in the mode B^+ -> eta' pi^+, and we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(B^+-> eta'pi^+) eta'K^+- decays is investigated and a limit at 90% confidence level of -0.20

Abstract

We have measured the branching fraction of the inclusive radiative B meson decay B --> X(s) gamma to be Br(B->X(s)gamma)=(3.36 +/- 0.53(stat) +/- 0.42(sys) +0.50-0.54(th)) x 10^{-4}. Abstract

We report a determination of the ${B}_{d}^{0}\ensuremath{-}{\overline{B}}_{d}^{0}$ mixing parameter $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ decays. The measurement is based on a $5.9{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.463\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016(\mathrm{syst}){\mathrm{ps}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. This is the first determination of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{d}$ from time evolution measurements at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$. We also place limits on possible $\mathrm{CPT}$ violations.

Abstract

The procedure of improving the structures damping performance was proposed by interconnecting two structures with a connecting member consisting of a spring and a damper. The modal equations of the first mode of both framed structures interconnected were shown using equations for the motion of a two-degrees-of-freedom (2d.o.f.) system, with two masses and three springs. The tuning method of a connecting element in the above 2d.o.f. system, by which the damping performance of the two systems in the 2d.o.f. system was equalized and maximized, was proposed, and the approximate tuning method of the connecting member, by which the damping performance of the first mode of the two framed structures interconnected was equalized and the maximized, was proposed using the tuning method of a connecting element in the 2d.o.f. system. In numerical investigations, the usefulness of the approximate tuning method and the effectiveness of the interconnecting member were shown.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the standard model $\mathrm{CP}$ violation parameter $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}$ (also known as $\mathrm{sin}2\ensuremath{\beta}$) based on a $10.5{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ data sample collected at the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider. One neutral $B$ meson is reconstructed in the $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{S}$, $\ensuremath{\psi}(2S){K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{c1}{K}_{S}$, ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{c}{K}_{S}$, $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{K}_{L}$, or $J/\ensuremath{\psi}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ $\mathrm{CP}$-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying $B$ meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two $B$-meson decay points, we determine $\mathrm{sin}2{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{1}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.58}_{\ensuremath{-}0.34}^{+0.32}(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{\ensuremath{-}0.10}^{+0.09}(\mathrm{syst})$.

Abstract

Objective: To report the results of prenatal triple marker screening on a population of Japanese pregnant women. Methods: From April 1994 through March 1999, a total of 32,925 native Japanese women with singleton pregnancies requested a triple marker-screening test. Multiples of the median values for 3 markers and individual risks for each patient were calculated following adjustment for the Japanese weight correction factor. The risk cut-off values used for Down syndrome (T21), open spina bifida (OSB) and trisomy 18 (T18) were 1:295, 1:290, and 1:100, respectively. Follow-up information was collected postpartum and statistically analyzed. Results: Detection rates (DR) of T21 for women less than 35 years, over 35 years and overall were 58, 94, and 83%, respectively. DR of T18 for women less than 35 years, over 35 years and overall were 75, 79, and 79%, respectively. DR of open neural tube defects (ONTD) was 100%. Conclusions: The first cumulative data of an intervention program and prospective follow-up studies in Japan have proven to be similar to other published reports. Individual risk values were calculated for each pregnancy for T21, T18 and ONTD. This screening program is more effective than age-dependent screening for detecting T21, T18 and ONTD pregnancies.

Abstract

The radiation hardness of a two-phase CCD sensor has been studied. The devices were operated in Multi-Pinned Phase (MPP) mode for reduced dark current, and irradiated by electrons and neutrons. Spurious dark current was observed in the electron-irradiated CCD's and explained by impact ionization by holes, released from defect states near the Si–SiO2 interface. A model describing the charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) in a two-phase CCD as a function of temperature, background charges and clock timing has been developed and applied in a good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract

The EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) has been used to obtain ion velocities in the lower thermosphere. By using beam swinging and assuming homogeneity and stationarity of the plasma, first approximations to the electric field have been deduced, and thus the thermospheric neutral wind has been estimated. From these derived parameters, we have estimated the gradient Richardson Number. Although many assumptions must be made, there is an indication that electrodynamics is able to contribute to enhancement or even production of neutral-air turbulence in the lower thermosphere. Finally, we outline a proposal for an analogy to the Reynolds Number, but reflecting the relative importance’s of the contribution of ion-drag to the neutral dynamics and the kinematic viscosity.
